What would you say the most common blood work panel you guys order on common animals is? Like for humans we have our yearly screening with CBC and lipids and the like. Is there an equivalent of that kind of standard panel for pets? Does it vary by species? By age? I'm a human med student fascinated by vet med and you guys are always so kind about answering my questions!

For cats and dogs, ivory tower/gold standard medicine would dictate getting a CBC (complete blood count), chemistry, heartworm/tick borne disease screening, and a stool exam once yearly starting at 1 year of age, and then at 7 years of age doing this twice yearly (except the heartworm/tick borne disease/fecal screen) plus checking the thyroid and a urinalysis. I would say that most clinics are not getting this minimum database on most of their patients simply due to cost concerns. The most common bloodwork panel I commonly run is not routine (because again, most of my clients are not willing or able to spend very much on their pets) but includes a CBC, Chem 21, and total T4.

Horses, cattle, and other livestock species rarely get routine labwork other than stool exams.

why do i keep forgetting that getting blood drawn for tests makes me tired as shit. it's common for healthier people to feel tired so i, known to be sensitive to any sort of fatigue, would most likely struggle afterwards, yeah?

What happens when... I have to get blood drawn?

Trigger warning for blood and needles for all of this post except the last paragraph.

The lists of things doctors can figure out by testing your blood is pretty much endless, so if you’re chronically ill/disabled in any ways, chances are you’ll have this done at least once in your life.  The good news is, getting bloodwork (sometimes called labwork) done is typically a relatively quick and simple procedure.

This can be done while you’re admitted to the hospital, or just as an outpatient appointment.  If you’re outpatient, you often don’t need an appointment and can just show up to the lab (the place where they draw blood) whenever works for you.  This also means you might have to wait a while if a lot of other people pick the same time.

Before you go, make sure you’re hydrated. This makes helps prevent you getting dizzy, and makes it easier for the lab technicians to find your vein.  It also helps to be nice and warm.

If your doctor’s office is part of a larger medical building, the lab is probably right in that same building.  If not, they might send you to the local hospital’s lab, or a freestanding lab nearby.  The lab will have a check in desk, a waiting room, and then lots of tiny rooms (or tiny rooms created by curtains).  They’ll call your name and bring you to one of the tiny rooms to sit down.  I’ve seen two types of chairs in these rooms.  One is like a recliner with big flat armrests, so you can lie back and put your feet up if you need to.  The other one is like an adult high chair kind of?  It’s a tall chair with padded armrests on either side, and then another one that flips down across the front of you.  It can feel a little like they’re trapping you, but it’s just to get your arm in the best possible position.  The lab technicians understand that many people are nervous about blood draws and needles, and odds are, they’ve seen it all and will be very kind.

They’ll typically let you pick which arm they use, and have you push up your sleeve.  Then they’ll poke your arm with their fingers to find a good vein to use.  For most people, this is right on the inside of your elbow, but some other common spots are lower on your forearm, or the back of your hand.  Next, they tie a piece of disposable elastic around your bicep to make the veins easier to poke.  It’s definitely tight, but shouldn’t hurt.  After they wipe your arm down with rubbing alcohol, they ask you to make a fist, and then poke a needle into the vein.  It’s not like they’re stabbing you, it more slides in almost parallel to your skin.  Lab technicians do this all day every day, so almost all of them are very good and get it quickly.  It pinches a little when it goes in, but then it doesn’t really hurt anymore, just feels like a strange pressure.  The needle has a connector on the other end that they’ll stick the vials on and fill them with blood.  If you need more than one vial of blood drawn, they’ll do them all right in a row.  Each vial only takes a few seconds.  The vials are clear, so if you don’t want to see blood, this is when you should close your eyes.  The elastic on your arm usually gets pulled off around here too.  After all the vials are done, they press a piece of gauze to where the needle goes in, and pull the needle out from underneath in one quick motion.  They’ll typically have you press the gauze to your arm to help stop any bleeding, while they put labels on the vials.  Then they tape the gauze to your arm, and if you’re not feeling dizzy or lightheaded, they send you on your way!

Especially if you got a LOT of blood drawn, it’s a good idea to have something to drink after, like water or gatorade or juice.  It helps get your blood pressure back up while your body makes up for what was just taken out.  You can also lie down with your feet up to help with any dizziness.   Having someone else drive you home might be a good idea until you know how you react.  

I also wanted to take a second to talk about an experience a lot of spoonies have with labwork:  everything comes back perfectly normal and you feel… disappointed?  That’s okay!  Especially when you’re having unexplained symptoms, you really want something to show up so that you know what’s going on and can start treating it.  It can be really validating and make doctors take you more seriously too, so it’s very understandable to hope for an unusual result.  But just because your labwork is all normal doesn’t mean you’re imagining or exaggerating your symptoms.  It just means that whatever’s causing your symptoms isn’t detected by the particular tests that were done.  So as much as it’s good that you don’t have whatever condition the doctor was looking for with bloodwork, it’s also okay to be frustrated and disappointed because that doesn’t give you any answers.
