It's both a blessing and a curse to know that despite its flaws, Worm has genuinely ruined me for other superhero fiction. The way the full versatile potential and implications of each power are explored truly blows my mind, and the plot escalation and foreshadowing are done very well.

I think I saw a post around warning users not to post fandom meta to AO3, and it struck me as blatantly disingenuous because I recalled reading much the opposite in the ToS FAQ. I reread it just now, and I was right:

Fan nonfiction is very much within the scope of the content allowed on AO3, everyone. It is explicitly stated on the website itself.

I love characters with tunnel vision. False dichotomies. The sunk cost fallacy. Characters who are convinced of their utmost rationality and can even lay out their entire philosophy in logical, impersonal terms and convince others even though the whole of their actions, rationalised to hell and back though they may be, are spurred on by something entirely emotional (and this doesn't stop them from being right on the money about some things). Characters who are at once the most and least self-aware people ever. Characters who know the ins and outs of their psyche like a map they've memorised but can barely tell when they're experiencing a feeling.

I routinely go insane about Hamlet's first soliloquy ending with "but break, my heart, for I must hold my tongue" when he spends the next act or so challenging, mocking, taunting, and torturing everyone with words because he can only do this when he is putting "an antic disposition on". I am frequently driven crazy by the thought of his madness being his ultimate performance, the one that consumes him, because it's the pretence that allows him to be honest.

Maybe the horror isn't about love or grief. Maybe this time it's about scorn. Maybe the monster is having an existential crisis. Maybe it's just hungry. Maybe it's a reflection of the protagonist's postpartum depression and the movie ends with her killing her baby. Maybe it's a metaphor for postmodern relativization. At least Freud gave us some leeway by saying that things could be about sex or death. That's twice as many things as "everything is about love".
