Babe Wake Up: Pathfinder playtest just dropped
I wasn't expecting to make this post til Sunday, but I guess the timeline has been brought forward. Paizo has announced War of the Immortals for a release some time next year. The playtest document for two fresh, new classes has just been released too and I have briefly skimmed it.
We've got two new classes to look at: the Animist, and the Exemplar. I've included their descriptions direct from the blog post and playtest document along with a few collected thoughts. Keep in mind, I haven't played these classes yet (I doubt anybody has, given how recent the blog post was) so I'm just giving a quick overview.
Animist
Tumblr media
"Samo of Icemark is a middle-aged Varki woman from the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, in the northernmost reaches of the Inner Sea region. Samo is a nephilim, a mortal being with a touch of the celestial planes in her bloodline. Born with the ability to see spirits and other entities that others could not, Samo was selected to learn from the elders of Seer’s Home at a young age after her abilities helped her save her village from a kushtaka incursion. Trained in the arts of animism, Samo was proclaimed a sage after successfully bonding with her grandmother’s spirit, an apparition known as a custodian of groves and gardens. Samo served the Varki people for nearly forty years, until the day a young, injured Okaiyan man washed onto shore near Icemark and changed the course of her life forevermore."
"a Wisdom-based divine spellcasting class that bonds with apparitions, ephemeral spirits who share their power and knowledge with the animist in exchange for the animist acting as their agent with the physical world. Bond with a Steward of Stone and Fire to add primal power to your spellcasting, make a pact with an Impostor in Hidden Places to gain access to sneaky and deceptive magics, or allow a Witness to Ancient Battles possess you and lend its martial talents to your repertoire!"
From a brief skim over the Playtest document, it seems like the Animist is sort of a successor to the Shaman and Medium from PF1, communing with spirits and even allowing them to inhabit the Animist's body. Some of the Animist's feats have the "Wandering" trait, which was something in PF1 that allowed the Shaman to choose new spirits each day. They have spells that they both prepare and spontaneously cast, which... seems interesting? I'll have to see how that plays to work out if I like it or not. They also have focus spells, which are kind of a given for spellcasters in PF2, but juggling three different resource pools seems like a lot for a spellcaster. The Shaman in PF1 was one of my favourite classes so I'm looking forward to giving the Animist a go, although I am unfortunately the ForeverGM so I don't get very many opportunities to build and play characters.
I wonder if they chose the name "Animist" just to make it clear that it's not the same class as in PF1, or if they're choosing to avoid the word "Shaman" because of specific, real-world uses of the word. I've written before that Paizo is very aware of, and trying to avoid, cultural appropriation. They've changed game terms in the past (such as "phylactery" and "totem") to avoid negative associations with real-world religious or cultural things, or otherwise perpetuating reductive stereotypes. I dunno, maybe I'm thinking too much about it. Though the term shaman does originate from Tungusic, the practice of shamanism isn't unique to that region of the world.
Exemplar
Tumblr media
"Nahoa is a young human man of the Olehala people, one of the four great voyaging nations of the Okaiyo Ocean that spans Tian Xia and Arcadia. Born on the rainy side of his island, Nahoa grew up digging canals for his family’s taro farm, taking care of his younger sisters, and ensuring his village never lost the yearly stone-hurling championship. Though he wanted nothing more than an easy life, Nahoa was Called to exchange his digging stick for a warrior’s spear when a great demon returned, as it had for decades, to prey on his home. He faced the beast high in the sky, and even as his spear pierced it, its talons dug into his flesh. Rather than succumb to the creature’s venom, Nahoa claimed its power as his own, becoming a nephilim in the process. He crashed, far from the Okaiyo, where he would meet a Varki woman and set off on a quest across a distant Inner Sea."
This is Pathfinder's very first rare class. That means, guidance given, it won't be available for most tables to play. I can see why they chose to do that, since while it doesn't seem to be overpowered, it is thematically very different to most other classes, and having only one Exemplar in a party might lead that player to believe themself to be the "Main character"
"a Charisma-based divine warrior possessing their own spark of divinity. The exemplar can move their divine spark between receptacles called ikons to unlock potent effects and abilities. As your power grows, you create your own epithet that defines your immortal legacy; whether you become a Cunning exemplar who’s Restless as the Tides and known to be a Thief of Moonlight, or a Brave exemplar, who’s Peerless Under Heaven and destined to be The Last Ruler of an ancient kingdom, is up to you!"
The examples given are Herakles, Cú Chulainn and Maui, so the speculation wasn't far off.
Tumblr media
The Exemplar seems to have a lot of moving parts. They have a number of "Ikons" which they can turn on or off in combat. One Ikon can be active at any time, and the Exemplar can activate different abilities depending on which Ikon is on.
Most of the weapon-focussed classes in this game have a feature where they deal extra damage with their weapons as they gain levels. In the case of the Exemplar, it's spirit damage, and they can later become Holy or Unholy, meaning their spirit damage is more potent against creatures of the opposite alignment.
They also get to choose an epithet that expands as they gain levels, starting with something as simple as "The Brave" but ending with something as badass as "Peerless Under Heaven". Many of the Exemplar's feats are about pushing themselves to greater feats of strength, superhuman athletics and acrobatics and stuff like that.
I'm reminded of the Epic Destinies from Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition, which inspired the Mythic Paths in Pathfinder 1e (and was possibly inspired by the BECMI "Immortals" set or another expansion from an earlier edition). To be honest, having played a bunch of Wrath of the Righteous recently, I am pretty hyped to have something adjacent to Mythic tier in this game. I guess we'll have to wait and see if it's just the Exemplar or if those concepts are expanded to other characters as well.
Edited to Add: Uh yeah it looks like we're getting Mythic character options in this book. I didn't read the preamble for the playtest but:
"The animist and exemplar will appear in the upcoming sourcebook Pathfinder War of Immortals, scheduled for Winter 2024, which also brings new legendary creatures and character options for a wide variety of classes and characters, as well as bringing new mythic rules to Pathfinder!"
(emphasis mine)
So yeah. I get hyped about every Pathfinder sourcebook release. Always have. Unfortunately, my group has to deal with rapid and dramatic genre shifts when something new comes out and I pivot our existing campaign to adopt those subsystems. Some day I will use all of the subsystems in the same game.

Hi Anon! Thanks for the ask... and the pun! This is again a random bit from the as yet undecided and untitled Ikesen Urban fantasy AU....
In all of his years, Shingen had encountered supernatural beings both benign and dangerous. Of course, since Kenshin was half-elf, the bar had a reputation of being welcoming to non-humans. Their regular patrons included a fae painter from the nearby art college, a Kushtaka, who had come to the country as an exchange student and never left, and the tanuki that he’d had to throw out multiple times for getting into Kenshin’s private stash of sake.  But tonight was the first time that he’d ever encounters a literal –
Goddess.
Her entire body was bathed in a shimmering amber light. A slight hush fell over the room. Seeming slightly self-conscious in the sudden silence, she made her way to the bar, and, as Yuki appeared to be stunned at the sight of her, Shingen took the opportunity. “Hello, Angel. Did you burn yourself when you stole the light of heaven?”
The Goddess blinked a few times. “Huh?”
Yuki recovered his voice. “You’re glowing.”
“Oh. Ooops!” The Goddess fumbled with her coat pocket and the otherworldly glow disappeared. “Sorry. Prototype. Magical fashion… but it doesn’t work. Well, I got the fashion ok, but I need help with the magic.”
“Magical fashion? That’s stup- OW!” Yuki rubbed the back of his head, where Shingen had thwapped him with a towel.

Alexis was sitting on his raft in a mostly-human form, otter tail dipped into the water in lieu of a fishing pole. In the meantime, the shifter also smoked his favourite pipe. All things considered, it was a calm day with calmer weather.
Indeed, everything was going along swimmingly until he spotted an overturned craft and a man struggling on the other side of the riverbank. Being helpful to others was as much a part of him as was being semi-aquatic; his surname even meant help from a foreign land. So, naturally, Alexis dove straight into the water and out again to investigate the floundering person.
The first thing he noticed were the claw marks allover the man's legs and he quickly produced a bottle of sake (never mind that it was the good stuff) with which to clean the wounds. He barely covered the first leg when he spotted a fish-like female FEASTING upon a second victim. Apparently, he had forgotten to put away his tail, because as soon as Alexis turned his back, the less than lucid first victim began to scream his head off. Alexis addressed the problem with more sake—It had worked for almost every other ailment—Pouring it down the other's screaming throat. Whatever the man just witnessed would never hold up with that much alcohol on the breath, this Alexis could count on. Well, when the man woke back up. If he woke back up. The beverage's fumes seemed to do a number on him. At least he would be quiet while the katakana-wileding kushtaka attempted to aid the second sailor.
Tumblr media
"Get away from him!"
He charged towards the mer-creature, waving his blade in the air. Did Alexis have to much to drink today? It certainly seemed that way, 'cause rather than morph into his more powerful self, a werewolfish, man-sized mustelid. he wound up simply throwing a sandal at the hissing mermaid. Also, the shoe was entirely ineffectual. The only difference now was that it had sunken into a wash of human blood at the mermaid's... Her equivalent of feet.
"Okay, so the guy's already a goner... But you'll have to fight me if you wanna keep that booze!" Without even knowing he'd done so, Alexis had lobbed the tokkuri full of liquid at the mermaid, too. Be damned if she wasn't going full Gollum—clutching the alcohol against her chest like it was this realm's 'precious'.
Alexis Gallagher: Alcoholic et avid reader.

Alias: The Nopperabo (A Nopperabo is a faceless monster that follows its victims around. Some stories say they kill their victims, others say they just scare them. In any case, I find it....interesting, don't you?)
Gender + Pronouns: man + he/him
Age: 25
Ocupation: Secretary for an office building (Boring.... like me, eheh)
More About Him; He blends seamlessly into the background of any situation. He has almost no presence and lets people walk all over him. Often fidgety and afraid to stand up for himself or speak out against any mistreatment he faces, others around him describe him as spineless at best. Should he somehow gain a speck of confidence, he can be charmingly charismatic. He can make anyone feel comfortable around him in a matter of minutes and naturally has the air of someone you can tell your entire life story. If only he'd use it for something more productive.
He cares deeply for his family, especially his twin. When they were younger, he protected and shielded zer from anything that tried to hurt zer. Now, the roles are reversed. His life experiences have caused him to become very codependent and clingy to a sad degree. His sibling now aggressively protects him from any further trauma and helps him in any way possible. He considers zer to be his only true friend.
A last little note about The Nopperabo is his desperate perfectionism. He will often do things repeatedly, trying to get it perfect. He is more willing to tear apart fully built furniture that's imperfect and try to rebuild it than just leave it be. He gets frustrated at himself for not being able to just let things go, but does them anyway to avoid a possible anxiety attack.
Subconsciously, he seeks out ways to stand out and take back control of his life. But, is he willing to seize the opportunity presented to him? Or will he let it slip through his fingers?

Offers Abo as a little nickname for the slashers to use for him.
Romances Black Dahlia and Elysium, might tact Sweetheart on tho. Abo would like someone doting on him, I think.
Obsessed with apple flavored anything. Will devour a apple pie(or two) on his own if no one stops him. Always has jolly ranchers on him; he eats the apple ones and gives the rest to others who want them.
Carries a bag with him everywhere, has basically everything in it. If you need/want something, ask him. 9 times out of 10, he'll have it. (Do you need water? ....Here. Unopened, of course. Wouldn't offer it if it was open.)
A horror movie enthusiast, he fucking loves them! Maybe to a unhealthy degree....
Likes gardening, but isn't really a green thumb. He tries, but fails pretty badly.
Has a interest in folklore, mythology and history, knows a lot of random history facts or bizarre people that lived once. And loves infodumping about different creatures in folklore and mythology. (Have you heard of the kushtaka from Alaska? Oh, can I tell you about it?? Please!?!?)
Abo has a odd fascination with death, stemming from his background. His twin shares this same fascination.
Idk if SLSQ has a 'canon' backstory for MC(aside from Carter), so I've made a backstory for the twins. I think I'll make a in depth post for it later, in the meantime here's the spark notes version; the twins family moved to America just before they were born, then died. They were adopted into a shit family and eventually one ran away. The other was caught trying and forced to stay. They lost contact, then found each other as adults and are inseparable now.

Hey I know this is a little out of no where but I wanted to ask, what would you do with the Native American miracle box? It's a really interesting box because despite it probably never going to get touched on again we know quite a bit about it. We know a lot of the miraculous in it due to the miraculous wiki, and we know there are about 17 miraculous in it if I remember correctly in fact only three of them we don't know. But even then we can assume one of them is a snake (hopefully a rattle snake) due to it being apart of the Native American zodiac, which the last tier is based off of. The other two we don't know purely because the wolf and bear are both part of the medince wheel, the middle tier, and the zodiac so those two will likely be swapped with something else. I could see a coyote taking the place of the zodiac wolf due to both being canine and coyotes being pretty big in Native American folklore. So back on topic let's this miracle box is the only one and the others don't exist and the order was based in America, what powers would you give these miraculous and what would they represent? The only one I have really thought about is the otter which I had representing transformation and having the power to shape-shift to relate to the Kushtaka, a otter like creature in Alaskan Native American folklore that had the ability to shape-shift and could either be good or evil depending on the story.
Personally I'd rather not be the one to cover it as I am a white American and it should be covered by a Native American.
Especially as a Miracle Box being in America, you really have to factor in America's history and the brutality and oppression that Native Americans have faced and are still facing. What changes with this box's existence?
I really can't give you an answer as I don't feel comfortable covering this. As this relates to their culture and mythology, this is something a Native American should talk about and do their take on it.

So I guessing with the otter being transformation your taking inspiration from the kushtaka (or otter man) a shape-shifting otter creature from Native American Alaskan folklore.
I read that otters can symbolize transformation, but I wasn't aware of that bit of folklore. I'll have to read more about them.

OC-tober: Nayati (Not much on him, he is a baby, he was created this year)
October 17, 2023
Nayati in this case is the very dangerous revolutionary who has traveled the world, mostly because he must remain in a semi-isolated existence because he can’t be with people and he is meant for an existence with the sea. His difficult childhood combined with this diagnosis of schizophrenia has made it difficult for him to connect with anyone. When his found family finds, the connection her forges with them comes with their patience in helping him ground himself into stability and allowing a support system to come in.
Name: Nayati he has a middle and last name I swear I forget what it is I’m at work sorry
Species: Human - kushtaka otherkin
Gender: Male, but like… he may not want to be defined, tbh.
Race: Indigenous person of America - Navajo
Sexuality: “Pansexual” but again, he doesn’t want to define it
Height: 5’9
Personality: Nayati, when he is balanced, is very adventurous, openminded, wise, and really outgoing. He is worldly. He is constantly expanding - spiritually, physically, creatively. He is passionate about his culture, cinema, and exploring as much as he can. He is a bit of a thrill seeker. However, when he is unbalanced, Nayati is very isolated because he feels he can’t control himself around other people. He feels misunderstood and ultimately, he can only find a way to be himself near water, in isolation, or when he is watching movies. What he needs are people who understand him. What he has are people who are basically shooting in the dark on what they think is “wrong” with him. As a result, he is very withdrawn and distant.
Mental health: Nayati is a diagnosed schizophrenic, though his situation is far bigger and more nuanced than just that
Crush/Lover/Etc.: Never had the chance to explore
‘Verse: MINE
Likes: Cinema, the sea - not much else
Dislikes: People, his own mind
Strengths: Nayati is incredibly resilient. He is worldly, openminded, adventurous, and can pick up on other languages really well.
Weaknesses: Due to his mental illness, Nayati cannot hold connections with other people, leaving him always alone unless he has the sea to calm his soul
Goals: Nayati doesn't share his goals with anyone because he is convinced that there is no way they can happen. Too much stands in the way. Seeing the world, becoming a director, having his own inner circle of friends and family just can't happen. Connecting with the spirits will never happen.
Pet: No pets... yet
Backstory: Nayati comes from a happy, big, spiritually open family. There is no childhood reason to explain why he is so fucked up. Everything that is wrong with his life come from within him. He has voices, he has anxiety, he has perpetual avoidant tendencies where he spends all his time alone. His entire family loves him, but they set him off because he is like a livewire. He's too sensitive and nobody knows how to handle him, including himself. And his mother tried her best with him, but her duties caused her to not be around enough for his needs.
Nayati was diagnosed with schizophrenia from a young age. He has a vast, violent inner world of conflicting ideals and voices all telling him to do all these things. Not all of them are violent, but many of them have rage he can't control. Rage that becomes him as he gets older.
Because Nayati struggled with all this pain as a kid, he never really had a childhood. He only ever gained reprieve in water. Near water. In the shower, in the lake, in storms, and eventually when he runs away from home to become a sailor.
It's so overwhelming that it is easy to believe that it is his true personality. It is easy to miss that he is actually an incredibly worldly man who wants to travel the world, become a creator of his own films, and take on the shamanistic duties his mother carries. He has the capacity to be and do so much just by himself. But he carries this great, violent force inside of him that will eventually take over.
No matter how far he runs.
