Opera on YouTube
I've shared links to complete opera performances before, but I love to share them, so I thought I'd make a few masterposts.
These list are by no means the only complete filmed performances of these operas on YouTube, but I decided that ten links for each opera was enough for now.
By the way, some of the subtitles are just a part of the video, while others require you to click CC to see them.

tagged by @cosmicrhetoric (thank you isha <3) to post nine book recommendations. I would literally die for some of these books
The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee, David Treuer: This is a Native American history book that tells the history of what happened after the massacre at Wounded Knee, leading up to modern native history. Because so many history books only tell about the massacres of Natives, an overwhelming amount of people don't know anything about modern day Native history, or about the time between Wounded Knee and now. I recommend this book to anyone who wants an introduction into more contemporary Native issues. The book does a great job of being clear with all of its information while still telling a compelling narrative that doesn't just end in death. I also was lucky enough to talk with the author about this book and his other work and it was a super cool experience, definitely recommend his works.
Another Country, James Baldwin: I struggled with deciding which James Baldwin book to put on here, because his work is consistently good and interesting. I ended up picking Another Country because it's just to be one of those books that manages to have a little bit of everything in it. In my mind, this is the Platonic ideal of a litfic book. It's brutal to read, in that way that only really James Baldwin books can be. There's so much about this book that I could talk about but just can't get into without starting to talk about a million other things that are equally meaningful and impactful. I honestly cannot even tell you what this book is about without just reciting the entire thing back at you so. Just trust me on this one.
Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments, Saidiya Hartman: This book quite honestly blew my mind when I read it last year. This book uses archival material to create fictionalized reconstructions of the lives of Black girls from the early 20th century that history forgot. The only evidence that some of these women even lived at all is a single photograph, or one surviving court room document. This book makes you empathize with the lives of people that history tried its hardest to make you forget, so that the reader is forced to find beauty in ways of life that run counter to our cultural narratives of the era.
Player Piano, Kurt Vonnegut: I also had a hard time picking which Vonnegut book to put on this list; real ones know that I'm a really big fan of his work. I chose his debut because its really underappreciated. This book got me back into reading after I burnt out in the middle of high school. It's a cautionary tale about automation (which feels more relevant now that AI is becoming a thing) and it really captures that classic scifi feel that i just can't get enough of. Its a silly, quick read, that fills you with the beautiful melancholy that Vonnegut books are so good for.
The Raven Tower, Ann Leckie: I couldn't post book recs without at least one fantasy pic, and I honestly love this one. It's a fantasy retelling of Hamlet focusing on gods that gain more power the more followers they have. It's a simple premise that the book manages to pull off incredibly well. Personally, I'm a really big fan of the second person pov sections of this book (second person pov is so sexy do not @ me on this). The treatment of the gods in this book is absolutely my favorite part, and I think it manages to combine with the main narrative very well. It's a very fun read.
Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer: God I love this book. It's been a few years since I've read it, but it completely changed a lot of the ways that I looked at the environment and at how our society treats science. This book is a nonfic about how Indigenous knowledge is often dismissed in scientific discussions as being invalid. This book argues that scientific knowledge and Indigenous knowledge are not mutually exclusive ways of knowing, and that combining these approaches is the way forward for environmental study. Also along the way you'll read absolutely gorgeous descriptions of American plants, and the ways in which people can build connections around them.
Nature Poem, Tommy Pico: This is the first book of poetry I ever loved, and the only book that I keep saved on my phone, just in case. Basically, the one sentence description for this one is that its a book about a queer ndn poet who can't bring himself to write poems about nature. This book is part of a tetralogy but can be read standalone with no real barriers. If you like this one I highly recommend checking out the others too. These are the kind of poems that you binge in a day and think about for a month straight.
Frankenstein, Mary Shelley: How could I not recommend Frankenstein rn. If you haven't read it, read it. You already know what its about, and that it is without exaggeration the sexiest book of all time. So read it. Not optional. This book has changed my life like five times over and I honestly can't trust anyone who can't admit that it rules.
The Monk, Matthew Lewis: THE MONK THE MONK THE MONK THE MONK THE MONK THE MONK!!!!! No one does it like her !!!! This is quite literally the most batshit insane book I've ever read, and I love it. I'm writing a thesis about this book. I told my advisor that I wanted to write about it, and then she immediately told me that if I was going to write about it, then she HAD to be the chair of my thesis committee. Every single person who reads this book is cursed to be a more weird version of themself who tells everyone they meet that they should read The Monk. This is the ultimate Gothic story, about a monk (holy shit) who is renowned for being uncorruptible, who upon meeting one (1) woman, is immediately overcome with lust and corrupted. I cannot stress enough that I have no way of determining if this book is even good, but it is the MOST book you will ever read. Please read the monk.
tagging blue @glasspigeons you don't have to do all nine but I at least want a top three

-----------------------------
I had just enough time to throw together a new volume of Christmas Jam as a bonus for this year.  As I’ve written here before, there are always far too many great holiday jazz tracks to include in my usual Christmas compilations so every so often I try to do an extra all-jazz collection as well.
Highlights:
Shorty Rogers was a trumpet and flugelhorn player who was also in great demand as an arranger.  (He did a fair amount of work with the Monkees, among many other artists.)  Here he plays on “Overture for Shorty”, a track from his 1960 album, The Swingin’ Nutcracker.
I haven’t been able to find out much about the Town Pipers (not to be confused with the Doodletown Pipers), but they were a jazz vocal group who apparently only released one album, Christmas Greetings, in 1959.  I’m also not familiar with this song, “Santa’s On His Way”, so it may have been composed by or for them.
There aren’t many musicians who can say they’ve played with John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Spike Jones, but harpist Betty Glamann did all that and more, in addition to leading her own group.  This version of “Deck the Halls” is from her 1959 album Christmas Fantasy.
And speaking of Coltrane, in 2009 singer Kurt Elling released Dedicated to You: Kurt Elling Sings the Music of Coltrane and Hartman, a tribute to the 1963 recording John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman.  However, this version of “Cool Yule”, originally made famous by Louis Armstrong, is from his 2016 album, The Beautiful Day: Kurt Elling Sings Christmas.
Will Bradley was an American trombonist and bandleader during the 1930s and 1940s, best remembered for the original hit version of “Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar”.  He and his band, The Boogie Woogie Boys, tear things up here with “Jingle Bells Boogie Woogie”.
The harpejji is an electric stringed musical instrument that was developed in 2007 and has been described as a cross between a piano and a guitar or as a cross between an accordion and a pedal steel guitar.
Tumblr media
The great Jacob Collier makes use of it to play a version of “White Christmas”.  You can see a video of the performance here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5T-9RPW4pg
Betty's Bounce is a trio performing acoustic American and gypsy jazz in the spirit of guitarist Django Reinhardt.  Here they offer a gently swinging arrangement of Wham’s “Last Christmas” from their 2018 album Luminous.
And finally, for no particular reason, a track called “Merry Christmas In Eight Foreign Languages” just in case you find yourself in one of these countries at Yuletide.
Cover art swiped from the internet.

Thanks for the memories
Sending a big, hearty wave to the wonderful cast and crew of “The Back-Porch Gang!” This picture was taken immediately after the final performance. As Myrtle would say: “The glow still lingers on.”
From the first day of rehearsals to the final performance, directing this show was a joyful experience. Thank you to (left to right) Ida Steele, Denise Swain, Kurt Grabenstein, Barbara S. Hartman, Joe De Mott, and Beth Graham Lamy for breathing life into the sublime characters of this funny, heartwarming comedy. It was an absolute pleasure to work with each of you on this project. Let’s hear it for Calvin Coolidge, y’all!
Thank you to our talented playwright, Ben Scranton, who wrote a beautiful story that seemed to resonate with San Antonio audiences. I love every word in this script.
Another thanks to Kurt for creating the fantastic sound design for the show.
Thank you to our stage manager Gina Schneider for joining us on this cheese-spilled journey to Waldo County. Thank you Xander Zamora, our casting assistant, for helping me cast the right actors in the right roles. Thank you to Ashton Simmons for capturing the perfect photo for our show poster. Thank you to Gibbs Saad for creating a fabulous poster that helped us with our marketing campaign. Thank you to our promotions manager Kurt Wilkinson for his support of the show and his excellent marketing work. Thank you also to the Overtime staff for the mysterious orange barrel (ahem) and the simple, but effective beige set. Thank you again to Beth for the back porch furniture! It gave the show an authentic vibe. And thank you for hosting our cast party in your beautiful home! It was the perfect Sunday gathering. Thank you also to Patricia and Chloe Zamora for donating the decorative plants for our little retirement home in between rehearsals for your own shows.
Last, but not least, thank you everyone who came to enjoy the show! We appreciated all the laughs, of which there were many! Long live LIVE theatre!
I would like to thank my friends, family, acting students, and colleagues for taking the time to see the play. I loved sharing this comedy with you! My mom, who hadn't had a chance to see my directorial work, traveled from New Mexico to see the show on opening weekend and she loved it!
Life happens fast. Recognize a good moment when you see one. I will long cherish all the *great* moments I shared with “The Back-Porch Gang.”
Until next time.

Police seize weapons, $70K in drugs from Calgary home (https_calgaryherald.com)
Calgary police have arrested two men after finding guns, stolen high-end bikes and more than $70,000 in illicit drugs in a Beltline residence.
At the beginning of March, police say they launched an investigation into a suspected drug trafficker, which eventually led investigators to a home on the 100-block of 14th Avenue S.E. Police executed a search warrant on the home on April 5, arresting two men.
Officers seized a loaded Glock handgun, a .22-calibre rifle, a variety of other handguns, firearm parts and ammunition. They also confiscated $10,000 worth of stolen property from a recently reported retail break-in, $5,200 in cash, 150 grams of fentanyl, 500 grams of methamphetamine and small amounts of other drugs, including MDMA, ketamine and shatter.
Nathan Owen Moberly, 29, is facing 21 charges related to drug trafficking, firearms and not complying with a release order. Tyler John Hartman, 42, is facing five charges related to trafficking and breaching court orders.
“Drug trafficking is never done in isolation. It often involves the use of weapons and violence, while being connected to property crime, such as break-and-enters and theft. Information from the public is critical to our success in identifying and locating the source of such activity,” said District 1 Staff Sgt. Kurt Jacobs.
