New Assets - Site Header

Over the past several months, we have been tooling and going with a site layout which accommodates a differently shaped header.

Designed and illustrated by Runeowl

Take a look at the beautiful night and day more header art for the “default” site theme!

This layout is proving much cleaner with a more intuitive and dynamic user experience. We currently have several staging deployments to get a feel for it and workshop the experience.

However, it is under wraps for the time being until we have the text, tab, color, and box sizing decisions fully locked in!

Thank you for the patience with our layout iterations! I’m really relieved by the direction things have gone, and feel Pawborough will be much fresher out the gate.

New Pattern - Butterfly

We are playing with the face design further to make sure it best accommodates a variety of colors, but this pattern itself has turned out just stunning!

And we've been steadily working on producing and updating white coverage, going to great lengths to keep an aesthetic consistency between coverage shapes and cat patterns. Here are a few white shape tests on Butterfly!

New Pattern - Solid

We’ve decided to forego a universal “basic” pattern, and instead introduce a handful of very simple patterns which any G1 cat can generate with. Among them is Solid–one of the few patterns which does not show the undercoat!

This pattern will have varying levels of values per color! Some may have a dark back, while others may look like a totally solid cat! Here are a few auto-generated previews from our generation tool to get a feel for the variety:

We will be adjusting colors to make sure they are near fully solid, while others may look more dynamic.

The decision to not include an undercoat may feel like we’re breaking our own rules here, but there’s been a great deal of workshopping for our initially lackluster system. In order to make all patterns and colors look consistently good with one another while maintaining a varied user experience, we took a new approach. This includes a slightly new set of rules and philosophy for our patterns to follow!

Patterns like Solid will be few and far between, but they’ll exist. Expect us to push the boundaries for patterns and genes in the future, including experimenting with line breaking accents... some really fun stuff in the works!

Speaking of changing up the philosophy, let’s talk about colors…

Mechanic Update - Teaser...

Due to time constraints with creating the supplemental preview images, and not wanting to present a concept without the appropriate visuals to back it up, nor delay the update another few days, I have decided to push an announcement meant for this update to next week. I wear a lot of hats on this team and am always working on something, so sometimes I fall behind on creating update images of our progress for you all, and for that I apologize!

However, you may be delighted to hear that we have progressively refactored the color and breeding system and have a brand spanking new system which has proved incredibly exciting! The whole team is enthused by this development, and I will return in just a few days to share it!

Backend / Functionality Progress

Development is steady. So far we've completed the following:

User Accounts, log in, sign up, and validation/confirmation.

A users online count which tracks user activity.

Logic for cat generation, all we need is to plug in the assets!

Backend for breeding. We can see generative results in code.

Backend for the Camp and Den functionality, both this and breeding are next for front-end building.

Current in-progress for front-end development is User Onboarding, where a user creates their two founding cats, designing their appearance, attributes, and statistics.

Frontend UX/UI designs for the above plus cat profiles, a user dashboard, user profile, account settings, breeding, and inventory have been created.

Below is a video which displays the prototype testing for onboarding!

As you can see, we have a system being workshopped for "favorite flavor" "disliked flavor" and "nature." More word on that soon... :)

Backers may also feel concerned at the amount of attention involved in this onboarding process so far. We know backers will want to get in as fast as possible in order to obtain low IDs for their cats, and could get frustrated at the attention this takes. Please do not worry! In an effort to preserve early user legacy while allowing for users to take time on their founders, IDs of starting cats will be reserved the moment an account is authenticated, so no matter how much time you take, your starting cats' IDs will not change!

To Summarize: We shared new Fauna, new icons, the new site header for the Default theme, the Butterfly and Solid patterns, and a first look at the onboarding prototype.

What to expect next month: Further asset and functionality updates. We will begin populating and testing at least user dens, camps, and cat profiles, if not more. Expect a breakdown of a completely new and improved breeding and color system next week.

After many hours (three) and many headaches (five) I have finally created a timeline of everyone’s ages in Enstars, in hopes to put something like a stop to the constant controversy. I tried to have this timeline make as much sense as possible, with a similar layout to the !-Era chronological story order page on the Enstars Wiki, and, right at the end, under the cut and after the timeline itself, I explain how I got these ages. However, I have just two things to note. 1. This spans from !-Era to !!-Era, though did not omit ALKALOID and Crazy:B from the !-Era section, because it still shows how old they would have been, had they been in it, but they have the words ‘Not in this Era’ next to their name, incase someone new happens to come across this who doesn’t know yet. And 2. I refer to the HiMERU who is 17-18 and born on the 7th of July as ‘Kaname’ since we know these are his details, not oremeru/beemeru’s, and the only details we do have on his age are that he's most likely the oldest, having ran away from home after his mother's death without the knowledge of his father having another child, and it wouldn't make a lot of sense for someone who's 6/7 or younger to run away from home.

That being said, the timeline is under the cut ! I hope someone else gets as much use or even just satisfaction out of this as I do lmfao

So... for those who wanted the explanation, this was all very convoluted to figure out, but using the official ages from the character pages on the Enstars website ( https://ensemble-stars.jp/ ) which are all their ages as of the first of July. If their birthday is after that, then they turn a year older than the given age, if it’s before, then they’re only just turning that age. It’s simple in retrospect, but it gave me a migraine trying to wrap my head around it.

With that out of the way I’ll share a couple little facts that my silly Enstars brain picked out that it found interesting from this : The eldest and youngest characters are in the same unit, Wataru is the youngest graduate, Tomoya was the youngest character during !-Era , and Rei was the oldest, the fact that as of the first of July in !!-Era, Tsukasa and Sora are seventeen years old, and the fact that AKATSUKI and 2wink are the only units in which the members are all the same age!!

The Garden {Part 2}

Warnings: gun/knife violence and mentions of blood.

Pairings: Ladybug, Lemon, Tangerine, and Yuichi x fem!reader.

You wake up to an alarm and you get up to walk into the next room where you do most of the Hivemind work. You grab your iced coffee from the mini fridge before you sit down at your setup. You turn on the huge PC that is decorated with photos of you and the boys on multiple screens. It lights up a bright yellow in the back which causes the room to follow suit in the hue. You put on your headset and get to work.

You knew the men would have arrived at their destination by then. You text the group chat to let them know you are up and ready to go. Ladybug texts a thumbs up as a signal to connect all your earpieces to be able to communicate through the mission. You turn the devices all on, “Hey boys! You guys got there alright?”

“We’re doing okay, BB. We are outside of the HQ right now,” said Ladybug.

“This shit looks like a goddamn fortress, darling. Gonna be a tough one, innit?” Tangerine says in disbelief.

“Just how you like them, Tang.” you smile to yourself, “First what you guys have to do is get to the back fence. There should be an opening big enough for you to fit yourselves and all the equipment without getting seen. You should use the trash bins when you enter to stash anything you might need to escape.”

“What if someone takes out the trash, though, what then?” Lemon asks.

“They won’t. They have very particular hours of taking out the trash and this shouldn’t take you up to 8pm now, should it?” you chuckle softly while looking at the daylight from your window.

“Let’s go. We should not waste time.” Yuichi mutters to them. “I want to get out of this as soon as possible.” He motions to his overall look. He has a much dapper look than usual to seem like he is a professional yakuza associate.

“Oh but I want pics of your sexy get-up before it gets potentially ruined. You didn’t let me see it before you left.” you pout.

He scoffs, “Hachi, don’t.” You giggle in response knowing you pushed him a bit.

“Alright, fellas. It’s showtime.” Ladybug says as all make their way toward the broken fence. They bend their bodies halfway to get through as you say, “You guys see a gray door straight ahead? It should have a helipad sign on it.”

“Yes, ma’am. Picking the lock now.” Ladybug manages to quickly get the door unlocked as Lemon and Tangerine stash the extra weapons as you advised.

Ladybug starts to zip up his jumpsuit, getting ready for action. “Now, BB, how did you manage to get the maintenance guy’s uniform? Did you order it?”

“Oh, lovebug, you underestimate me. We have had this plan for months and you thought I wouldn’t have the actual maintenance man taken care of. How did you think I knew his whole schedule and how the routine check-up works?” you say while taking a sip of your iced coffee.

“Wow, our Bumblebee has a stinger,” Lemon says. “Damn, right, handsome.” You smooch as he chuckles in response.

The boys make their way up to the third floor of the stairs and right before they open the door you say, “Wait, guys, remember this layout. The left side of the corridor is where Yuichi has to escort Ladybug to the computer. On the right side is where Lemon and Tangerine need to sneak through to get to the last door on the left where Kuro Akuji, the yakuza chairman, is currently setting up the deal with the subordinate family of his clan. They know that there are people trying to get this deal to cease its plans of kicking civilians out of their town just so they can expand their empire with a shiny, new money-grab casino. Even people in his own clan aren’t too happy about it so there are going to be guards roaming through that hall so try to be as quiet as possible. Be invisible, even.”

“Got it, poppet,” Tangerine says as clicks out his knife before opening the door and peeking out to make sure the coast is clear for them to split up. He nods and the pairs go their separate ways. Lemon and Tangerine walk a few feet before needing to turn a corner and take a glimpse of the hallway that is full of a bunch of huge men in suits having a chat outside the doors of the meeting. “Bollocks.” They say quietly at the same time. “BB, how much are we getting paid for this again?” Lemon asks in whispers.

“The informer offered 3 million for Akuji’s death along with everyone else in the room who is involved,” you say while reading out the terms on a tab of your encrypted emails.

Yuichi frowns while still walking through empty hallways with Ladybug. “Just to kill him? What has the computer got to do with it?” he asks.

“Oh that is a mystery mouse ka-tool that is going to help us later,” you smile to yourself. “Just stay focused and make sure you go to the black door at the end of the hallway that has a number 3 on it.”

He shakes his head and decides to not ask any more questions. Yuichi then finally spots the door you said and he looks at Ladybug before taking a sigh. He knocks three times before a tall man with bleached hair and a similar dark suit to Yuichi’s answers the door. He seems to have an intimidating ever-present frown that most large men in the yakuza always wear as a part of their uniform.

Ladybug stands there, awkwardly smiling and lifting his toolbox up as Yuichi is explaining their presence to the associate. The man lifts his eyebrow before opening the door giving them room for entry.

“Good boys. Now, Ladybug all you have to do is follow the steps I showed you the other day. Unscrew the computer’s casing and then remove all the parts so you can look like you’re replacing the PC’s fan. Snatch the original motherboard before replacing it with the extra one.” you explain before switching your attention, “Fruits, are you guys doing, alright?”

“Just fucking dandy, darling,” Tangerine says out of breath as he grunts while he slices the last huge guard in the hallway.

“Still need to get to the Diesel, luv, but we got this.” Lemon states before grabbing a sword that is laying on the floor beside a large suited body. Tangerine looks to his brother and says, “Time for a Tail Tack, innit?” Lemon pats his shoulder and responds excitedly, “Shit, bruv, we haven’t done that in ages!”

Tangerine kicks open the door to the meeting and the twins run in shooting and slicing in direction, back up against the other to keep from throwing shots at each other. Bodies hit the ground like coins out of a pocket and not a single one with a second to process taking out their weapons. The two men take a look towards the center of the room and blow a few more shots toward the most important person in the room.

Thankfully, all the commotion isn’t heard from the opposite side of the floor, where Ladybug is finishing his work of grabbing the motherboard. Yuichi asks the associates for a lighter trying to act casual while distracting them from the final pieces of Ladybug’s movements.

Ladybug finally closes up the computer case and then gathers his tools before standing up. Yuichi notices and then makes his way up towards the exit while bidding farewell to those in the room not trying to make eye contact with the large bleached-haired man as he opens the door. Ladybug follows close behind saying his best Japanese goodbyes. They both release a breath like they’ve been holding it the whole time there as they walk back towards the same place they exited.

They meet two blood-covered twins halfway with and stare at them with raised eyebrows. “You bastards act as if you didn’t expect this,” Tangerine says annoyed at their reaction before opening the door to the stairs aggressively.

“Are all my boys together and in one piece?” you smile feeling proud of how smooth your plan played out. “Yes, we are close to the exit,” Yuichi says.

“Oh my god, am I actually going to see Yuichi come back with that delicious suit?” you ask before biting your lip at the thought.

“Not before you hose down the fruits before letting them back inside The Garden.” Ladybug cringes at the thought of needing to get the inside of the car cleaned as they crawl out of the hole in the fence. “You try looking proper when you have to fucking blow some bellend's brains out for 3 million fucking dollars!” Tangerine states aggressively as he hops into the driver's seat making their quick escape in hopes no one follows them.

“I'm sure it isn't anything I haven't seen from them before. As long as my boys come back to me still breathing, I don’t care what I have to do. But I will make it my own personal mission to see sexy Yakuza Yuichi in front of me before I deal with the twins.” you chuckle as you keep track of the traffic cameras, making sure that no one is following their location.

The boys arrive safely and you get a notification of the deposit from the informer in The Garden’s bank account just a few minutes after confirming the mission’s completion. Ladybug hops out of the car still in his disguise, with the toolbox in his hand. He opens it and passes you the motherboard. Your smile wides as he hands it to you and you give him a quick peck on the cheek. Yuichi gets out of the car and you walk up to him as soon as you notice him. You took out your phone and take a photo immediately as you squeal like a fangirl.

“You look so fucking hot! I’m so sorry, but I am going to plan more jobs that require you to be in more sexy ass suits.” you run your hand down his tie, admiring the details.

Yuichi can’t help but chuckle lightly at all the attention you’re giving him despite his aversion to the idea. “I can’t say no to you, Hachi. You know that,” he says while stroking your hair softly.

“Thank you for looking this handsome so we could have the motherboard,” you say while looking up at him sweetly.

“Why is it so important, anyway?” Yuichi asks.

“It is important because this will give us access to all the intel that Kuro Akiji’s clan had on the area they claimed to be theirs. Secret houses, plans, or info on their members that his associates held in one computer to keep things running properly in the organization. We can be one step ahead of all the yakuza’s operations. Plus, it runs insanely fast and has a large amount of space for me to do the same in The Hivemind. They had the best computer modders in the city optimize it to perfection so it has all that and more for me to play with. So, basically, you guys have acquired one of the best systems that could only be found in the black market with the same price value as what we made from just killing Akuji. Neat, huh?” They look at you in astonishment as you explained.

“You, Bumblebee, are fucking brilliant,” Lemon says. “And you, my Lemon drop, need a fucking shower. And so do you, Tang. Come on, let's go to the backyard so I can hose you, cuties, down.” You snap twice and point for them to walk to the back gate with haste.

A/N: Sorry, it has been a minute since I felt the urge to get my ideas flowing! I was really needing a day to feel like I could give you guys this sweet little bit of their dynamic on the job and today was finally that. I had fun writing this one and even though it isn't really smutty or even remotely steamy, the thoughts of how they would work together made me smile. I hope you all feel the same way.

It really feels like we're moving into the home stretch, doesn't it?

Stream-of-consciousness thoughts for TriMax Vol. 12, Chapters 1-3 below.

Eyyy, it's Grape Juice Vash! Wait. Why is his hair all black? WHY IS HIS HAIR ALL BLACK?!?!?!

Chapter 1: The End of the Journey and the Echoes of Breathing

Oh, so while Knives expects they'll never see him coming, these folks have dealt with this sort of thing before and actually have formalized plans for how to deal with it.

Chronica doesn't look particularly happy about this situation. What could be going through her mind as she heads off to fight another of her kin?

Is Domina another Plant? Or are we just running with dramatic names at this period in history?

Kinda wish these two pages were put together in a spread. Makes it a bit easier to follow Vash's... er... cheerful reminiscing.

Heh, but in spite of all the destruction he's witnessed and been a part of, his thoughts go back to all the kind people he's met along the way.

This isn't even just the kind people anymore. It's just all these people who made an impact on him. And Kuroneko.

Man, Legato takes up so much space here.... Definitely not all people who had positive impacts. Good to see Lina and her grandma kinda balancing him out a bit on the other corner of the page.

All the Gung-Ho Guns.... I like how Razlo and Livio are given separate panels, and how Livio's panel is still kinda Razlo-centric. It shows him not being him, but just being a mask and a tool, the real person buried down deep and nearly lost to shadows.

The fact that Chapel's here is interesting. Wolfwood had the coin, but it seems like, as far as Vash is concerned, only the actual Chapel was truly a Gung-Ho Gun. That would line up with his insistence that the coin was Chapel's in the previous volume despite Wolfwood explicitly noting it was his own. (Though Wolfwood was actively trying to push Vash away at the time, so who knows how truthful he was being.)

Ah, and there we end with the two most important figures: Wolfwood and Rem.

I love everything about this panel. I love the dramatic layout. I love that he loved both the good times and the bad. I hate that he basically expects to die here. I love almost everything about this panel.

Anti-Plant missiles?!? Dang, that's a thing to have to invent...

Chapter 2: Corrosive Thunder

Aaaand it's an entirely new thing in Plant warfare.

If it's been 200 years since they sent out the colony ships and 150 since the Great Fall, then the ship Vash and Knives were on was only out for about 50 years before they crashed.

Hahahaha, Domina's cute when she's flustered.

Seems like Domina might be able to sense Knives.

I'm guessing Knives' "extreme intelligence" is what's allowed him to maintain his will through all of this.

Knives really doesn't care about the lives of his siblings, does he? Even the ones with a legit conscious free will, he'll destroy and/or absorb if they disagree with him. Shouldn't really be a surprise given how he treated Vash, but it's still a bit shocking how far he's willing to go.

Chapter 3: The Interceptor

This isn't going so well for the Earth fleet.

Yeah, the townsfolk really weren't gonna do much against the ark with their puny guns...

It is very dangerous to fire straight into the air! Gravity's a thing! Physics is a thing! Thank you for recognizing this!

This is probably the first time I have ever seen a piece of media honor the "what goes up must come down" property of shooting guns off into the air. Dramatic things like Elandira's nail and Wolfwood's rocket don't count. It's never honored with normal bullets.

Yeah, stupid general man is still sitting there with his stupid warhead. At this point, it might actually be useful if it distracts Knives... but a dirty bomb is called that for a reason. It would devastate the population below, too.

For all her good talk about forgetting Knives is a fellow Plant, Chronica's struggling to do the same with her assimilated sister.

Uhhh, Vash? Vash, babygirl, whatcha doing?

Dang, he managed to cut Knives' tie to Domina. What... what will that even do to her??

With Tumblr staff being reduced to a skeleton crew and website shutdown rumors going around where can ppl find you? Where should the kuroshitsuji fandom migrate to?

At this point, I imagine most folks are keenly aware of the issue anon mentioned above…but, if not, here’s the post summarizing the recently-announced downsizing of Tumblr’s staff, which doesn’t bode well for the site’s longevity. While this news was disheartening, however, I’m not giving in to despair just yet. Others have pointed out that Tumblr isn’t likely to vanish overnight in a puff of smoke; instead, we should probably expect a more gradual decline. If anything, blogger khaleesi notes that a frantic mass exodus would do more harm than good, since a dwindling userbase will lead to Tumblr’s already meager profits drying up. I can only speak for myself, but this obstinate rat has no intention of abandoning ship. If staff wants me gone, they’ll have to chase me into the sea with a pitchfork. 😤 🐀

But it never hurts to have a contingency plan or three to keep our fandoms afloat.

Unfortunately, I’m afraid I don’t have a clearcut answer to your second question. Even if Twitter wasn’t currently ablaze (unlike the phoenix, I doubt it will ever rise to its former glory), the site’s layout isn’t amenable to Tumblr-esque blogging. To add insult to injury, Kurotwt is crawling with Seb*ciel fujoshis, though there are a handful of cool accounts to be found. I’ve heard horror stories about the Amino, while Insta is flooded with stolen, uncredited art. I’m vaguely aware of sites like Pillowfort and Dreamwidth that might serve as viable alternatives, but I don’t know enough about either to give you an informed opinion. Mutuals, do y’all have any suggestions for anon?

At the end of the day, I’ll follow my sector of the Kuro corvid flock whither they may wing. No matter how inhospitable the terrain, I’m sure we’ll find a way to build ourselves a cozy nest!

Duty Or Love // Chapter 2

Fandom: Servamp Ship: KuroMahi

Summary: Mahiru believes that the only reason Kuro stays by his side and protects him is due to his uncle’s request. (KuroMahi, Knight AU)

Part 1 // (Part 2)

“Welcome to my home, Mahiru. There isn’t much compared to the castle but we’ll only be staying here for a night. I’ll light the fireplace so you’ll be warm. The one advantage of a small house is that it becomes warm quicker.” Kuro said as he opened the door. They were soaked from the rain and Kuro quickly started a fire to chase away the cold. “There are three bedrooms and the bathroom is the last door.”

Kuro nodded to the hall as he finished explaining the layout of his small house. He was the one to suggest they hid in his house yet he felt self-conscious. Even though he knew that Mahiru would never judge him for his modest home, the worry passed his mind. He was reminded that their stations were miles apart and he couldn’t provide Mahiru with the life of a prince.

“I didn’t expect for you to live outside of the castle because my father offers lodging to the staff. You’re also the type to complain about long horse rides. I can understand why you might choose to live here instead of the castle though. It must be peaceful.” Mahiru noted as he took off his jacket. He hesitated to step off the welcoming mat because he didn’t want to drip water onto the wooden floor.

“This hut belongs to my family. I sleep in the castle because I’m your knight. Sometimes, I return here to visit my siblings but that’s rare. My siblings are also knights and it’s nearly impossible to arrange a time when we’re all free.” After he lit the fire, he walked to Mahiru. Kuro took his wet jacket and handed him a towel. “It’ll be troublesome if you get sick. You don’t have to worry about making the floor wet. I’ll give you my clothes to wear.”

“Thank you, Kuro. You don’t have to…” Mahiru’s words trailed off into a sigh after Kuro disappeared into one of the rooms. He had hoped that they could be less formal because they were outside of the castle and its expectation. To his disappointment, it appeared that Kuro only saw him as the prince. He stepped off the welcome mat and muttered. “Pardon the intrusion.”

Kuro’s home was small and the living room was merged with the kitchen. When Mahiru compared it to the elaborate kitchen in the castle, he found that he preferred the layout before him now. The open layout would allow him to talk with people while he cooked. Mahiru imagined himself in the small kitchen with Kuro and his own thoughts made him blush.

He walked into the kitchen and searched the cupboards for a kettle. He thought he should make a hot cup of tea for Kuro to drink once he returned. They were both wet from the rain and the warm drink would help. Mahiru didn’t want Kuro to catch a cold because of him. Since he was his knight, Kuro would prioritize him more than himself.

As he waited for the water to boil, Mahiru sat in front of the fireplace and rubbed his hand together for warmth. He noticed the pictures of different people lined up on the mantel and assumed that they were his siblings. Kuro wore a subtle smile in the photos and Mahiru wondered if he would ever look at him that way. Mahiru almost laughed at his own naïve thoughts. From the night he overheard his uncle’s conversation with Kuro, he knew that he only befriended him as part of his job. He still fell in love.

Mahiru heard footsteps behind him and he glanced over his shoulder. Kuro entered the room with a pair of clean clothes and a towel. He set the clothes on Mahiru’s lap and then draped the towel over his hair. Gently, he rubbed his hair dry. “Who would’ve thought that I would be caring for you like this? You’re always the one doing things like this for others.”

“Can I go one day without hearing a joke about how motherly I am, Kuro?” Mahiru pouted but he didn’t want Kuro to stop. The fond gleam in his red eyes could almost trick him into believing that he cared for him. They were closer than it was appropriate for a prince and knight but neither moved away from the other. “I don’t think I would do something like this for someone I barely know. Have you done this for the past royals you’ve guarded?”

The moment the question left his lips, Mahiru regretted him. He had always been curious about Kuro’s past and why he became a knight at a young age. He heard rumour that a Count adopted the Servamps and trained them to fight. Mahiru never asked him about his past because he could see how uncomfortable the question made him.

“You’re the first person. I told your uncle that I wasn’t fit for the job and Hyde would’ve been better. I can’t call myself a shining knight like in fairy tales but I’m going to protect you.” Kuro answered him and his hand dropped. The loss of his touch made Mahiru feel colder than the rain did. “It’s getting late. You can use my bed and I’ll sleep on the couch to watch the door.”

Mahiru was barely able to sleep. He stared at the ceiling above him but he could only see the loneliness in Kuro’s expression when he asked him about his past. He glanced at the door and wondered whether Kuro was still awake as well. Should he go speak with him or wait until the morning to apologize over breakfast? The regret in Kuro’s voice as he told him he wasn’t a knight tugged on Mahiru’s heart. He wasn’t a character from a fairy tale but Mahiru still loved him. He needed to tell him.

The window creaked eerily and Mahiru assumed that the house’s old age had caused the sound. He found the simple home charming but it was clear that it needed maintenance. Mahiru was surprised that the house had become so worn considering his uncle paid the staff well. He reminded himself to speak with his uncle about Kuro’s living situation. His sibling would be happy with the repairs as well.

“Who are you and why are you in my brother’s bed?” A cold dagger was placed against his neck. Mahiru held his breath, worried that the slightest moment would cause the blade to cut him. He didn’t know how someone could sneak into the cabin without him or Kuro noticing. He wasn’t able to dwell on that though. The person leaned over him and repeated his question.

Mahiru leaned his head back and pressed his body into the mattress as much as he could. When he felt the pressure of the knife lessen, he slammed his foot against the bedpost. The loud sound surprised the man who didn’t expect him to move. Mahiru grabbed the hand holding the knife and shoved him away with as much strength as he could.

He knew that it would be difficult to fight a man with a weapon and it would be better to run. He threw off the blanket and rolled off the bed. In the struggle, he fell to the ground with a loud thud. The man moved faster than Mahiru could and he stood in front of the door. With his escape blocked, he searched for a weapon to defend himself.

The door slammed open and Mahiru was relieved to see Kuro with his sword drawn. He stood to help him fight but Kuro marched past the man and stopped in front of Mahiru. He sheathed his weapon and cupped his face in his hands. “Are you okay, Mahiru? I heard a struggle.”

“You know this intruder, Nii-san?” The man asked Kuro and gestured to Mahiru with his knife. When Kuro glared at him, he raised his hand and dropped his knife. “Don’t give me that glare. You can’t blame me for assuming that your little friend broke into our house. The cabin is well hidden and Sensei ordered that no one outside of our family can enter.”

“I didn’t have a choice. Anyways, Sensei is dead so we don’t have to worry about his reaction.” Kuro said sarcastically. Next to him, Mahiru looked between the brothers with confusion and his shoulders were stiff. He wrapped his arm around him and squeezed him gently. “Mahiru, this is my brother. Hyde, Mahiru is the prince. We were caught in the rain and I didn’t want the prince to catch a cold. Sensei would be disappointed if I failed in my duty to protect him.”

“Sensei is dead so we don’t have to worry about his reaction. It’s a shame that you waited until he was buried before you took your duty seriously.” Hyde echoed Kuro’s words in a harsh tone. Mahiru could sense that there was animosity between the brothers. The tension surprised him since Kuro often spoke of his siblings with fondness. He placed his hand on Kuro’s arm and the small gesture caught Hyde’s attention. “So, this is your prince.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Hyde, even in such an unconventional way. Kuro told me about you. Let’s go to the living room and talk. The pot of tea I made should still be warm and we’ll drink that.” Mahiru suggested. Before either of them could answer, he took Kuro’s hand and led him outside the room. He whispered to him: “You don’t have to be so guarded, Kuro. Hyde is your brother. If he does try to start another fight, I’ll order him to stop.”

“I never expected you to use your authority for petty things like this.”

“I don’t think it’s petty.” Mahiru shrugged. “A prince can also protect his knight.”

“Kuro, we’re running out of firewood. Is there more in the shed that we can use? Since it’s raining, the cabin will become much colder at night.” Mahiru said as he added another log into the fireplace. He noticed that Kuro hesitated to leave and he could easily read his expression. He sighed, “I’ll be fine by myself. Your brother won’t attack me now that the misunderstanding is gone.”

With those words, Mahiru gestured for him to leave. He was grateful that he nodded and walked outside. A cold breeze entered the house as he left and Mahiru turned back to the fireplace. He used the fire poker to keep the flame alive. As soon as the door closed, Hyde asked: “Are you a prince or a witch? A magic spell is the only explanation for my brother’s behaviour.”

“Pardon me?” Mahiru didn’t know what Hyde could be referring to. “Kuro isn’t acting differently than how I know him.”

“He brought you to our cabin. Even after Sensei died, we’ve all been scared to come back here. Lily sometimes visits but it’s only to clean and leave food. I wasn’t planning to sleep here tonight. I passed by the cabin and saw smoke in the chimney so I came to investigate.” Hyde explained. Mahiru thought the family were tense with each other and it quickly became apparent that Kuro had a complicated past.

“Kuro doesn’t talk about the Count who raised him. However, the few times he opened up to me about his family, he spoke of his siblings and how much he cares. Whatever happened to create a rift between you two, it should be put in the past. I don’t want either of you to lose a brother.” Mahiru scanned the photos on the fireplace and remembered how he lost his mother. “Kuro is my knight and I want him to be happy.”

“Being your knight makes him more than happy, I assure you.” Hyde smiled regretfully. “Did you know that our family didn’t plan to send Kuro to be your knight? Sensei trained him to be an assassin. The night I was supposed to meet you at your uncle’s birthday, I became sick. I was certain that Sensei was going to kill me for not fulfilling my duty. Kuro went in my place. Of course, Sensei flew into a rage at Kuro for going against the role he gave him.”

“Kuro wanted to protect you. The Count might’ve trained him to be an assassin but he’s a knight at heart. He has guarded me since we were children.” Mahiru’s smile became a little sad as he continued. “Even if he only befriended me for the sake of his duty, I am grateful that he never left my side.”

“Your uncle gave me that order during my initial interview to become your knight. I never had the chance to tell Kuro of the order because I was sick and he moved into the castle to guard you. Even if I had the opportunity, I wouldn’t have told him.” Hyde said. “You may call Kuro a good knight but he’s terrible. Knights shouldn’t become close with royalty.”

The realization that Kuro wasn’t the knight his uncle spoke with that night made Mahiru speechless. Why had Kuro tried to befriend him so quickly after he became his knight?

“Kuro, you don’t need to sleep here with me. What are the chances another one of your siblings will come to the cabin and attack us? If you’re going to insist on staying, we should share the bed at least. I don’t want you to sleep on the floor.” Mahiru sat on the edge of the bed and held out his hand to Kuro. The welcoming hand compelled Kuro to cross the room to stand in front of him.

He didn’t move to lay beside him though. “I can’t properly react to an intruder if I sleep in the bed. The floor is uncomfortable but I can manage. I can fall asleep anywhere.”

“You’re my knight but I don’t want you to be constantly worrying about my safety, Kuro. Between the bed and the floor, you should choose your comfort.” Mahiru gently took Kuro’s hand and looked into his red eyes. He recalled his conversation with Hyde. “Can I ask you a question? When my uncle first introduced us and you became my knight, what did you think?”

“There was flour in your hair.” Kuro could easily recall the night that had changed his life. The birthday party had been overwhelming with its elaborate décor and golden glow. However, Mahiru always stood out in his memories. He looked lonely and nervous among the array of people. He understood the emotions behind his expression all too well and he decided to reach out to him.

“You didn’t think of me as a prince?” Mahiru smiled with relief when Kuro shook his head. “I was so worried about that and it made me think you were just acting as a knight would. I’m sorry. Maybe, if I hadn’t been so self-conscious, I would’ve understood sooner.”

“You’ve never treated me as just a knight.” He knelt in front of him and held his hands between them. “Why would you think otherwise, Mahiru? Did my brother say something to you?”

“We did talk but it was helpful.” Mahiru leaned down and kissed his hands that protected him for years. “He made me realize how happy I am to have you as my knight. Not a knight, but mine. I love you.”
