When Venus enters the cat café just after opening one morning, more than half of its feline population comes crawling out of the woodwork to greet her.

“Well, if it isn't the crowd favorite! You’re here early,” says a girl behind the bar. “What can I get you? The usual?”

“Yes, but can you give it a few minutes before you start? I want extra snuggle time with the kitties,” Venus says, already having been dragged down to the carpet by the kitties in question.

“No problem,” says Vivian, the barista. “First batch of customers doesn't start pouring in for, like, usually another half-hour.”

As the water boils in the pot, Venus is sprawled out on the floor, with a kitten resting on her stomach as another kneads at her hair. Vivian peers at her over the counter from above, giggling.

“They’re nicer to you than anyone else, y’know,” she says.

“Why's that?”

“Maybe it’s your, uh…” Vivian winks, curling her fingers up like a cat’s claw. “Your raw animal magnetism?”

If Venus had her coffee already, she would’ve spit it out.

“Thanks,” says Venus, receiving her piping-hot Americano and dropping a $5 bill in the tip jar.

“Same time tomorrow?” asks Vivian.

“You bet.”

Venus kneels down to give a few goodbye pets to a particularly clingy kitten, setting her cup on the floor. When she picks it up again, she notices something scribbled on the side:

Kort gezegd is dit in feite een probleem met je blogsjabloon. Je sjabloon geeft afbeeldingen in berichten die met de nieuwe editor zijn aangemaakt niet weer zoals je verwacht.

Het maakt niet uit of GIFs via de oude of de nieuwe editor worden geüpload: ze worden op dezelfde manier verwerkt. Er is geen verschil in kleurendiepte of in resolutie. Je kunt dit zelf controleren door via je Tumblr dashboard naar je berichten te kijken (bijv. in plaats van jeblognaam.tumblr.com/post/id, ga je naar tumblr.com/jeblognaam/id). 

De reden dat je een kwaliteitsverschil ziet is dat berichten die in de nieuwe editor zijn aangemaakt door oudere blogsjablonen als tekstberichten worden behandeld. Sjablonen voegen vaak een marge rond de content van tekstberichten toe, en dus ook rond afbeeldingen die er deel van uitmaken. Als je sjabloon berichten weergeeft als 540 pixels breed, met een extra marge, dan is de beschikbare ruimte voor je afbeeldingen dus minder dan 540px. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat de browser je afbeeldingen omlaag schaalt om ze passend te maken en dat heeft dus weer een negatief effect op de kwaliteit.

Afbeelding geplaatst met de nieuwe editor, weergegeven in een oud sjabloon. De browser heeft de afbeelding omlaag geschaald omdat het een 'tekstbericht' is, en dit sjabloon gebruikt een extra marge voor tekstberichten waardoor de beschikbare ruimte afneemt.

De oplossing: gebruik een nieuwer, bijgewerkt sjabloon zoals Vision of Stereo. Sjabloonontwikkelaar @eggdesign heeft ook een themasjabloon ontworpen dat werkt voor nieuwe berichten (Engels) waar je op kunt voortborduren! Deze moderne sjablonen gebruiken marges alleen voor tekstblokken in plaats van voor het gehele bericht. Op die manier blijven afbeeldingsblokken margevrij en worden ze dus over de gehele breedte van 540px weergegeven, net als op je dashboard. Voor zover wij het weten, lost dit alle problemen rond de kwaliteit van GIFs op blogs op.

Ja, we weten dat je sjabloon aanpassen veel werk is. We hopen deze overgang in de nabije toekomst verder voor je te stroomlijnen, bijvoorbeeld door je te helpen sjablonen in de Theme Garden te vinden die goed met nieuwe berichten werken. Maar werken met nieuwe berichten is de toekomst; nieuwe berichten gebruiken een indeling waarmee in de toekomst veel meer mogelijk zal zijn.

Waarom kan je in de nieuwe editor geen berichttypes aan berichten toevoegen? Waarom worden nieuwe berichten niet als fotobericht behandeld in plaats van als tekstbericht?

De nieuwe editor gebruikt een nieuwe berichtindeling, Neue Post Format (NPF) genaamd. NPF maakt berichten veel flexibeler wat betreft de content die ze kunnen bevatten; weet je nog dat je vroeger niet eens afbeeldingen naar reblogs kon uploaden? Of hoe oude chat- en citaatberichten op magische wijze van auteur konden veranderen (EN)? Dankzij NPF zijn deze problemen verleden tijd. NPF hief allerlei beperkingen op, waaronder berichttypen die ervoor zorgden dat berichten slechts één type content konden bevatten.

Maar bestaande blogsjablonen moeten deze berichten wel nog steeds kunnen weergeven. Omdat je in NPF-berichten waar dan ook mediabestanden kunt opnemen (terwijl de meeste oude berichttypen een rigide structuur voor mediabestanden hebben), was het het veiligste om NPF-berichten in te delen als minst beperkt berichttype en dat zijn tekstberichten. Dat was de beste manier om deze berichten achterwaarts compatibel met bestaande blogsjablonen te maken.

In plaats van berichttypes hebben we een {NPF}-sjabloonvariabele per bericht toegevoegd dat door aangepaste sjablonen kan worden gebruikt. Sjabloonontwikkelaars moeten hun sjablonen bijwerken om deze nieuwe gegevens te kunnen gebruiken en volledige controle over de HTML-output van hun berichten te behouden.

Omega and their families had been planning this cook out for months. Having it at the Harper house was just an added bonus. Clark chats with Alberto and Bruce as they man the grill. Lois, Bianca, Selina, and Linda sit around the picnic table, discussing the latest big pharmaceutical company scandal.

Roy, Wally, and Dick have reverted back to their teenage selves, throwing various dangerous objects at each other to ‘test reflexes.’ Jai, Irey, and Lian Watch from the monkey bars, like they’re 8 years old again. Milagro holds Helena’s hand, letting the little girl show her the cool things she sees. Colin and Jon play cards with Jon’s older brothers.

The other Batfam members would get there later, each held up with other matters. Damian and Mar’i had to handle a break-in at a new art gallery. Normally the two younger members of the Batfamily are a force to be reckoned with…and they have the tempers to match.

The Supermen pause in their conversations, each tilting their head to listen. Clark whistles, shaking his head at Bruce, “Good luck, buddy.”

“They’re going’ at it.” Chris snorts to his younger brother.

“Best friends vs. Girlfriend.” Kon tuts, “Hard choice there.”

“Uh-huh. How’s Tim doin’ again, Konathan?”

They hear them before the pair come out. Still in uniform and oblivious to the others in the room, Mar’i and Damian bicker…only…that’s not English?

“Zax’sal keli-kar zempwah.” Mar’i snips, crossing her arms in front of her. Are those bullet holes in her uniform?

The two continue on, not caring about the others. Bianca leans over to the cat burglar, “Do they understand each other?”

Watching her son and granddaughter, Selina shrugs, “Y’know, we’ve never really been able to tell. I think they understand each other better than the languages.”

Reaching the end of her patience, Mar’i grabs her uncle’s cape as he tries to turn away. The boy wonder has no time to react as his niece marches over to the porch. Floating up, she ties his cape to a beam. Damian swears and twists around, the release on his cape getting tangled up.

“GRAYSON!” Damian’s face turns red, though from anger or embarrassment, no one’s sure.

“What? Thought you’d like to look me in the eye for once.”

“Let. Me. Down. Now!”

“When you’re ready to be nice, I’ll help you down.”

“I am going to murder you.”

“Gosh,” Mar’i deadpans, “Not like you didn’t try multiple times when we were kids. How many knives did you break again?”

The other parents take that information in slowly, then turn to Bruce. He doesn’t even blink, just shrugs again, “He was an awkward kid. Mar’i was more upset about the sweaters she lost— DAMIAN, GRENADE DOWN!”

Het is decennia geleden dat ik het Victoria and Albert Museum (meestal V&A genoemd) bezocht. Wat me er nog van bijstaat is een grote verzameling mode en een afdeling met heel veel muziekinstrumenten. Van kunst is me van dat bezoek weinig bijgebleven. Op de laatste middag van mijn bezoek aan Londen besluit ik het V&A opnieuw te bezoeken. Vanaf het metrostation leidt een lange tunnel naar een ingang van het museum die direct uitkomt op de afdeling sculptuur. Ik heb het hele museum bekeken. Nou ja, bekijken is natuurlijk een te groot woord voor zo’n immens museum volgepakt met duizenden voorwerpen. Ik zag fraaie schilderijen van Constable en Turner, kartons van Rafaël en Tippoo’s Tijger. Maar omdat je nu eenmaal niet alles goed kunt bekijken, besloot ik me te concentreren op de afdeling beeldhouwkunst. Deze bevat een zeer fraaie verzameling werken met grote namen.

Centraal in de hal staat een werk dat ik herken, maar waarvan de kunstenares mij volledig onbekend is. Het gaat om Venetian Boy Catching a Crab van Henrietta Skerrett Montalba (1848-1893). Ze studeerde aan de National Art Training School (nu: Royal College of Art) en aan de Accademia de Belle Arti in Venetië. Ze specialiseerde zich in portretbustes van terracotta, waarmee ze talloze prijzen won. Het fraaie beeld van de Venetiaanse vissersjongen werd in 1893 tentoongesteld in de Royal Academy en op de World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

Hoewel zijn werken erg gladjes zijn, ben ik toch een immens bewonderaar van Antonio Canova. Zijn Amor en Psyche in het Louvre behoort (met werken van Bernini) tot de allermooiste beeldhouwwerken die ik ken. Hier in de V&A staan een aantal werken van zijn hand. Naast een buste van Helena van Troje, is dat Teseus and the Minotaur. De held uit de Griekse mythe heeft de Minotaurus (een monter, half-mens, half-stier) gedood. Op de rots liggen de spoelen met draad die Theseus moeten helpen uit het labyrint te komen. Canova was in de twintig toen hij dit indrukwekkende beeld maakte. En dan is er als derde The Three Graces. Zij representeren vrolijkheid, elegantie en jeugd en schoonheid. De hertog van Bedford gaf opdracht voor dit beeld toen hij Rome bezocht. Hij plaatste het in een speciaal ontworpen ‘tempel’ in zijn huis.

Van de geïdealiseerde beelden van Canova naar de veel ruwere en modernere beelden van Rodin. The Fallen Angel toont een geveugelde figuur die op de grond is gevallen en vastgehouden wordt door een naakte vrouw. Het beeld is bijna een zoekplaatje. Waar houdt het ene lichaam op en begint het andere? The Age of Bronze was Rodin’s eerste levensgrote beeld. Hij gebruikte een soldaat als model omdat hij de houdingen van professionele modellen te conventioneel vond. Toen het werk voor het eerst werd tentoongesteld, vond men het zo levensecht dat critici de kunstenaar ervan beschuldigden dat het een afgietsel was. Rodin moest bewijzen dat de kwaliteit van het beeld te danken was aan zijn zorgvuldige observatie.

Een paar dagen gelden schreef ik dat het altijd leuk is om een werk tegen te komen dat je herkent, omdat je het eerder in een totaal andere context hebt gezien. Dat is ook vandaag weer het geval. In januari 2020 bezocht ik de tentoonstelling Troy, myth and reality in het British Museum. Daar zag ik een beeld, dat blijkbaar thuis is in het Victoria & Albert Museum, namelijk Thetis Dipping Achilles in the River Styx. Uit mijn kunstdagboek van toen: “Thetis, de moeder van Achilles, doopt hem in de rivier de Styx om hem zo onkwetsbaar te maken. Omdat ze de baby vasthoudt bij zijn hiel, vormt dat, inmiddels spreekwoordelijke, lichaamsdeel later zijn enige kwetsbare plek. De hiel zal hem uiteindelijk fataal worden.”

Hoi, ik had een vraagje! Soms gebruik ik stukjes uit je collages (zoals woorden of een stuk tekening of...) om een nieuwe collage van te maken. Ik zou ze nooit ergens posten of er zoiets mee doen en gebruik het eigenlijk vooral om een gevoel te kunnen tonen en die collage dan mee te nemen naar therapie. Maar ik gebruik nog steeds wel stukken van je werk, dus ik wou eens vragen of het voor jou oke is als mensen zo'n dingen doen (onder voorbaat dat die nergens gedeeld worden dan natuurlijk)?

Hallo hallo, Wat tof dat je stukjes van mijn werk gebruikt om zo ook je eigen creativiteit te kunnen uiten! En wat goed dat je dit dan ook kunt gebruiken en meenemen naar therapie. Kan me goed voorstellen dat dit soms makkelijker is dan iets verwoorden zonder beeld. (Heel herkenbaar en doe ik zelf dus ook regelmatig!) Zolang mensen niet zomaar mijn werk kopiëren en ergens anders posten. Of stukjes uit mijn werk halen er deze gebruiken en posten zonder daar toestemming/credits voor te geven vind ik alles prima. Dus mijn werk gebruiken voor persoonlijke doeleinde is helemaal ok! En vooral eigenlijk ook een heel groot compliment. <3 Ik wens je heel veel sterkte en liefde toe. Stay strong <3 -B.
