I had never drawn a picture of Phuong(my oc) interacting with Raya before but after watching Princess Mononoke I had the idea to recreate the scene where Moro talks to Ashitaka, I just modified the dialogue a little bit
It was also an excuse to practice coloring

Raya and the Last Dragon popped into my head today and I kept thinking about how the incredibly unsubtle and poorly executed message of trusting others felt like a first draft.
What do you think about it? Would a revised script with the same story premise fix that film? Or was it doomed from the get go in what it was trying to say?
Good question! I go back and forth. I think the movie's biggest weak point was its writing, so I guess I'd say, "a revised script with the same story premise would fix it!"
There's nothing wrong at all with a message like "Without trust, we can't stand together." Because it's very true. Everyone has priorities, and there's always a chance they'll choose themselves over you, or over the "greater good." But if you keep trying to take control of the situation by believing the worst about them before it happens, you'll be exhausted & jaded, they'll be exhausted & jaded, and all your time and energy will be spent on competing with each other for the grand prize of "who can look out for their own interests better."
I think Raya and the Last Dragon's premise works for a truth like that. It makes total sense to have a girl who's competitive become jaded and control-freaky when her father, the symbol of the virtue of trust & good faith, is murdered by betrayal. And not just any betrayal, but betrayal from someone she directly tried to befriend and trust as a sort of "first experience" with that good faith her dad was always talking about. Makes total sense. And it's impactful; something that traumatic and personal would cause a relatable character flaw that the heroine needs drastic measures to overcome.
Tumblr media
I actually love the concept of Sisu too. I like the idea that she's this pure, selfless soul who's got childlike faith—but, all the jaded people in a post-apocalyptic world respect and consider her worldview because she's a revered dragon. So she really does change minds just by being around them, just by coming back and existing in the first place. I mean, if she had been just a sheltered girl from, say, a different country, who came into the broken Kumandra with stars in her eyes, the bad guys wouldn't have thought twice about whatever she exemplified. But she's a dragon.
And step back and think about it: having a group of characters from every walk of life come together as a mini-experiment in trust and unity during the course of the adventure is a great idea. It's not flashy or original, but it's classic and true. Avatar the Last Airbender has a crew of characters from each tribe combining to defeat evil. When Kenai has a prejudice against bears in Brother Bear, how is that character flaw solved? Not just by him turning into one, but by him having to travel with and get to know one.
Tumblr media
What they get to know is that they all have something in common: they've all lost people to the great evil in the world. And, they all want the same things, despite cultural differences. They all want their families back, they all want safety and success.
Tumblr media
So yeah, the pieces are all there. The problem is, the writing was just super clunky. Theres a lot of telling, when it comes to the story, instead of showing. There's not no showing. There's just not enough.
I know this is already a long post, but I'll just point out: Aladdin's message had a lot to do with trust, too. But no character ever said out loud, "you have trust issues and you need to work through them." Certainly not more than once. The closest you get is Genie telling Aladdin to be himself.
Tumblr media
Instead, you're just shown that Jasmine is the type of girl to give an apple to a hungry kid without even thinking about whether or not the shopkeeper wouldn't want her to do it. She's the type of girl who plays along with a scrubby boy from the marketplace trying to help her. She's the kind of girl who goes out with a Prince even though she has reason to believe he's already lying to her. She just does those things, and never says, "hey, why did you lie to me--you have trust issues!"
Meanwhile Aladdin's whole story is him bending over backwards to control what everyone thinks of him, because he can't trust them to accept him as he is. But he never says, "Trust gets me hurt." He just says, "if Jasmine knew I was really some crummy street-rat, she'd laugh at me."
Tumblr media
Those sentences that the characters say are well-written because they are realistic. Only in our modern psycho-babble Instagram-influencer culture, where everyone thinks they're an expert on the human psyche, are teenagers starting to say things like "My trauma causes me to struggle with trust."
What Aladdin says is much more immediate, much more down-to-earth than that. It shows where his brain is in that moment. He's not thinking about the general philosophy of truth and trust. He's just thinking about what he should or shouldn't say on his date, and how scary the idea of getting laughed at is. We, the audience, are smart enough to infer that it's all rooted in trust issues. We don't need Genie to deliver a speech six times to make it abundantly clear.
I'm capable of identifying that as the problem, but I'm not great at doing it, myself. I know the language, I'm not great at speaking it. But actually I'm going to punt this part of the question over to @doverstar , who is very skilled at "show, don't tell," especially in dialogue. How would you re-write that scene where Sisu is trying to convince Raya of the importance of trust?
Tumblr media
One final thing that I think handicaps Raya and the Last Dragon is that, because of the way they're written, the characters lose likability. Theres a way to have a traumatized, defensive girl who thinks she knows everything still be likable. Just like there was a way to have a selfish, insecure liar be likable in Aladdin.
I think there are other issues—I'd have completely written out the baby and the monkeys, and I'd have cut the fight sequences between two teenage girls way shorter because nobody cares about them. But that can be for another post.

"What do you think she's into? Cats? Knives? Cats with knives? Knives with little cats on them? Actually, I know exactly what to give her."
The great dragon Sisu knew that gifts show your affection for a person and strengthen your bond with them 🌸
Isn't that what the people in Kumandra were sorely lacking?
One of our items that is running out and won't be coming back after is the Sisu dragon pendant-n-brooch 🐉

Raya, giggling: "Nami, you're blushing!"
Namaari: "I'm the cold Warrior Cat..."
Raya, teasing: "Of course! But you don't love me too much to do that..."
Namaari, softly: "And what if I do?"
Bonus...
Raya 😳: "I did not expect her to say that..."

I know that I already filled a meme of worlds I would like to see in KH4, but filling in this one kind of feels like upping my chances of it happening. I know that it sounds crazy, but even if Treasure Planet or Moana don't become one of the new worlds in KHIV, I would be okay of them appearing in other KH games, that come after KH4 (if we're lucky).
Tumblr media
With the division of Kumandra being due to people living in distrust and envy of one another, as well as greed for the Dragon Gem's power, is sounds like the kind of place that the Heartless would be drawn to. That is why I think that Kumandra would be an interesting choice for Kingdom Hearts world. Even if Sora, Donald and Goofy aren't the ones who get to visit it, seeing one of the other Guardians of Light learning from Raya's story would be enough. Watching Raya the last dragon again and dissapointed with the potential again -(and also a bit teary).
Like, that was a pretty cool narration of the malay world/ASEAN, of fighting each other when they could be allies. It's pretty good, the cultural reference aren't too on the nose or too vague.
Great fight scenes.
There wasn't a single character song.
Okay I'm gonna be honest that's really a big point for me, a disney princess without a single song I can sing.
Where's Raya's song, where's Sisu's, where's Boun's (sniffle), where's Tong's (sniff), where's Namaari's, even that crazy ninja-baby Noi and her congi pals.
Where's their internal narration in song form that give them extra depth I can hyper analyze for characterizations and character motive.
I literally had to watch it again because I barely remember anything (which could be good because I'm crying again), it's kind od easily forgettable as a disney princess without a song.
... Sigh, I'll go see if there's some fan made or something to satisfy my craving... Maybe with the lockdown over maybe they'll release some songs..... One can hope.

I've seen a few headcannons that Raya is always cold and likes to use Namaari as a space heater, so I thought I'd run with the idea. Here's some G-rated Raya x Namaari snuggle/comfort fluff.
Ao3 link!
______________
Raya awoke shaking, both from the terrible dream and the cold night's chill. Winter had fallen on Kumandra, and while it wasn't common in Fang, a light snowfall was silently settling upon the city. Raya sighed, rubbing her eyes and trying to clear the terrible image of Heart's fall from her mind. Though it had happened over 8 years ago now, and she and Namaari had discussed that fateful day and put it behind them, Raya's dreams were still haunted by the memory.
She sat up in the large bed in Fang's guest chambers, shivering. She and her father were in the city for the annual trade council between the tribes; Raya had come along to observe the formalities of the council in preparation for the day when she would take over Heart from her father. She also secretly relished the chance to visit with Namaari. Their friendship had been growing into something more the past few months, and both girls were simultaneously shy and excited to extend their boundaries and welcome each other more closely into their lives. Progress was slow, but they were learning more and more how well their differences complimented each other and how well they got along.
She looked over to the corner where Tuk Tuk lay on his cushion. The pillbear was curled up tightly, protected from the cold by his thick armor. Raya smiled as a muffled snore drifted out from between the armored plates. She would find little respite from the cold with Tuk Tuk, but that didn't bother her. She had someone else in mind.
Raya hopped off the bed and slipped out of her room, closing the door softly so as not to wake Tuk Tuk. She walked quietly down the still, dark hallway of the guest chambers, passing the room where her father's snoring rivaled Tuk Tuk's. Turning the corner she continued down to the room at the end of the hall and stopped in front of a large door carved with images of serlots and waterfalls.
Raya opened the door slowly, creeping in to check the surroundings. The room was bathed in a soft bluish-white glow, the shadows of falling snowflakes dancing slowly down the walls. On her pad in the corner, Binta cracked open one glowing yellow eye, saw the intruder was only Raya, and closed it again. Raya crept over to her. She had grown quite fond of the serlot, who was surprisingly gentle with her friends despite being a ferocious enemy. "How's my favorite purrball?" Raya whispered, scratching Binta in her favorite spot under her chin. True to her nickname, Binta began purring and gave Raya a light lick on her hand. Raya gave her a few more good scritches before turning back to the rest of the room.
The light from outside lit the open room well enough for Raya to see Namaari curled up under her blankets. She looked so peaceful, a sharp contrast to her usual rough and confident demeanor during the day. Raya was suddenly hesitant to disturb her and turned to go back to her guest room, thinking she could grab an extra blanket along the way, when she heard rustling from the bed.
"Raya?" Namaari's voice was raspy with sleep. "What's wrong?"
"I- I can't sleep. Too cold." Raya replied, thinking it was best to keep the nightmare to herself. She looked sideways at Namaari, and the look she got back suggested the other girl knew something else was up.
Namaari gave a resigned sigh, but a smile played at the corner of her lips. "Of course you are. You're standing there in nothing but your night clothes and it's snowing out. Come on over."
Namaari turned onto her back and put out her left arm. Raya hurried over to the bed, crawling up beneath the blankets Namaari had pulled away. Raya settled down at Namaari's left side. She folded her right arm to her side and draped her left arm across Namaari's stomach, resting her head on Namaari's chest in the crook of her shoulder. Her right leg stayed extended out alongside Namaari, but she pulled up her left leg and hesitantly started to rest her knee across Namaari's hips. It was a step that Namaari hadn't allowed until recently, saying it made her feel trapped. Raya waited for a rebuff, but none came. She settled her leg down, happy their trust in each other continued to grow. Raya heaved a deep, contented sigh and breathed in the pleasant smell of her friend's warm skin and faded lavender perfume.
"Better, dep la?" Namaari asked, her right arm joining Raya's left in its place on her stomach after pulling up the blankets.
"Mmmmm" Raya hummed happily, and felt her friend's chest shake gently with soft laughter. Namaari folded her left arm around Raya's back and trailed her hand lightly up and down Raya's shoulder.
"Anything else on your mind?" Namaari asked quietly. Raya played with a loose thread on the seam of her friend's shirt, considering telling her about the nightmare, but she didn't want to ruin the peaceful moment with bad memories. That would always be a stain on their relationship, but they had agreed to learn from it and move forward. Maybe tomorrow, but no, not now.
"Nope." Raya said, and nestled deeper into her friend's warmth. Namaari didn't push. Her hand drifted down to rest more comfortably on Raya's side, and Raya felt a gentle pressure on the top of her head as Namaari leaned her cheek against her. Namaari's breathing deepened as she slipped off back to sleep, and Raya listened as the other girl's heart beat slowed. Her head rose and fell slowly, hypnotically, as Namaari breathed.
Raya couldn't believe their relationship had come so far. There was a time she would have laughed at such a notion, and challenged anyone who suggested it to a fight for insulting her. Raya thought back to their fight in this very palace the day the dragons returned. Her stomach clenched as she remembered just how close she had come to letting her rage win, to cleaving her sword into the young woman she now lay snuggled beside. What if things had gone differently that day, and she had let her sword complete the blow? What if her last act before turning to stone had been murder? What if-
Raya swallowed a yelp of surprise as a heavy weight suddenly dropped onto the foot of the bed. Apparently unwilling to let the cuddle puddle proceed without her, Binta had jumped onto the bed and now settled herself across the girls' feet. "Binta, you big fleabag!" Raya whispered. "You scared me half to death!" Binta simply began purring, the sound resonating through the mattress. Despite the scare, Raya was grateful to the large cat for interrupting her spiraling train of thought. Raya listened for any change in Namaari that would indicate her serlot had woken her up, but she detected nothing and Namaari slept on. She must be used to such interruptions, Raya thought. Calmed by the serlot's purring and Namaari's steady, warm presence beside her, Raya slipped peacefully asleep as the snow continued to softly blanket the city below.
Thanks for sticking around till the end! It turned out longer than I anticipated, but I couldn't find a smooth ending point. I just kept wanting to add more!
