making friends with pencil and magical notebook paper
Making Friends by Kristen Gudsnuk
Silly charming coroful characters that fully acknowledge that made themselves into the magical girls from their in-universe manga by using a magic notebook that brings everything drawn to life.
1st book: Danielle, our main characters, draws herself an imaginary friend to life. When said imaginary friend finds out she has a conflict of weather she has free will. Another favourite moment in 2nd book when Danielle draws an aware-im-a-clone-and-am-chill-with-that and better-version-of-herself clone to interact with people and do schoolwork. I like this.
in 3rd book mom gets hold of notebook and draws Danielle into a better daughter. and then it ends weird but in a good way.

Stories of Superheroes & Supervillains!
The following is a list of novels and comics that I recommend to all those who enjoy tales of Superheroes and Supervillains-- especially the ones with a bit of a twist! Fellow Readers-- this is for you!
Soon I Will Be Invincible, by Austin Grossman: Follow the story of Dr Impossible (a Supervillain and Evil Genius; known throughout Earth and beyond for his countless attempts at World Domination) and Fatale (a cyborg and rookie Hero; the newest member of the world’s most famous team of Heroes) in a tale that brings new meaning to power, glory, responsibility, and of course, Good and Evil.
Hench, by Nalalie Zina Walschots: Anna does boring things for terrible people because even criminals need office help and she needs a job. But when an encounter with the so-called “hero” leaves her badly injured, she discovers that the line between good and evil is mostly marketing. And with the power of social media, spite, and the backing of one of the most feared villains on earth... she might just be able to have her revenge!
After the Golden Age, by Carrie Vaughn: Can an accountant defeat a supervillain? Celia West, only daughter of the heroic leaders of the superpowered Olympiad, has spent the past few years estranged from her parents and their high-powered lifestyle. Then she is called into her boss' office and told that as the city's top forensic accountant, Celia is the best chance the prosecution has to catch notorious supervillain the Destructor for tax fraud.
The Extraordinary Adventures of Ordinary Boy, by William Boniface: In the city of Superopolis, everyone has a super-power. Well... ALMOST everybody. With villains scheming for power, Ordinary Boy be able to do anything to stop them??
Sidekicks, by Jack D. Farraiolo: Meet Scott Hutchinson: by day, he’s an ordinary schoolkid, but by night, he’s Bright Boy: the superfast, superstrong sidekick of the great hero, Phantom Justice! But after an embarrassing incident involving his too-tight spandex costume, plus some signs that Phantom Justice may not be the good guy he pretends to be, Scott begins to question his role. With the help of a fellow sidekick, once his nemesis, Scott must decide if growing up means being loyal or stepping boldly to the center of things.
Henchgirl,  by Kristen Gudsnuk: Mary Posa hates her job. She works long hours for little pay, no insurance, and worst of all, no respect. Her co-workers are jerks and her boss doesn't appreciate her. He's also a supervillain. And her parents... well, they're the most famous superhero couple in Crepe City. Cursed with a conscience, Mary would give anything to be something other than a Henchgirl, but no matter what she does her plans always seem to go awry.
My Sweet Archenemy, by Rosanna Duong: In the city of Localsburg, Miss Sunshine fends off evildoers, including the maniacal Mad Spade! However, the super heroine is no sunshine and Mad Spade isn't so sinister... as she pines for the affection of her self proclaimed "archenemy”!
Steelheart, by Brian Sanderson: Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. These people, known as Epics, used their powers to rule the world. Nobody fights the Epics...nobody but the Reckoners. And David wants in. He's seen Steelheart-- the Epic said to be invincible, the Epic who killed his father-- bleed. And he wants revenge.
Please Don’t Tell My Parents I’m a Supervillain, by Richard Roberts:  Penelope Akk wants to be a superhero. She's got superhero parents. She's got the ultimate mad science power, filling her life with crazy gadgets even she doesn't understand. She has two super powered best friends. In middle school, the line between good and evil looks clear. In real life, nothing is that clear.
The Society of Steam series, by Andrew P. Mayer: This new steampunk series opens in 1880, when women aren't allowed to vote, much less dress up in a costume and fight crime. But twenty year-old socialite Sarah Stanton still dreams of becoming a hero. Her opportunity arrives in tragedy when the leader of the Society of Paragons, New York's greatest team of gentlemen adventurers, is murdered right before her eyes. Enter into a world of adventure, romance, and clockwork!

Summer of Strawberry Shortcake: Return of the Purple Pieman
Up to now, I haven't included anything (picture books, mostly) as canon that wasn't from the animated specials, series, or movies, but I'm making an exception for the 2016 comic run, and the subsequent webisodes that were based on a handful of stories from that run solely because it introduces The Peculiar Purple Pieman into the BBA canon. Not only has he been a constant in this franchise, the comics tell a serialized story (with some side stories along the way) that make it feel more like an extra season than the previous comics run in 2012. In fact, these competition-themed stories would fit right into the "three episode mini arcs" structure that seasons two - four followed.
The comics introduce the Pieman into the series as Steve Piemanne, a hipster-ish youtube chef who plans to leverage winning a big baking competition into getting his own place (which he does, even though Strawberry wins the competition in the end, thanks to his social media presence). BBA's take him is a departure from previous versions, as it casts him and Strawberry as equals and rivals, both entrepreneurs trying to run their businesses, though Piemanne is more than willing to turn to underhanded tactics to get one up on Strawberry.
This series also introduces Raisin Cane, a reimagined version of a comics-only character from the original SSC comics. Back in the 80s she was Sour Grapes' niece, but since Sour Grapes is a younger character in BBA, here she's her (and Sweet's) cousin who writes food reviews and occasionally handles PR work.
The main plotline, spread out over five different issues, sees Strawberry first meeting and competing with Steve Piemanne for a place in a big competition in Big Apple City. She discovers he's been cheating, but promises not to expose him if he competes fairly in the last round and gives up his chance to go to Big Apple City if he wins. The judge decides to send them both to the big competition, which Piemanne uses to loophole himself out of not going. Strawberry's time in Big Apple City mirrors some of the circumstances of her 80's counterpart, with obstacles showing up at every turn to keep her from getting to the studio on time (clearly the work of Piemanne, but not shown as explicitly as in the 80s). Despite this, Strawberry manages to overcome all the challenges thrown at her both by the show and Piemanne and comes out on top.
The second "episode" sees Strawberry and Piemanne competing in a taste test to help Berrykin Bloom determine which of them should cater his upcoming family reunion, with Piemanne only being an option because Raisin Cane promised he could provide above and beyond what Strawberry has. Piemanne wins, but it turns out Raisin promised too much, and he turns to Strawberry to help keep the reunion from being a disaster.
Raisin Cane stirs up trouble again in the third story, where a TV show spotlighting food establishments decides to split their planned episode on Strawberry's cafe to include her "feud" with Piemanne (by now rebranded as The Purple Pieman), and she points out to him that Strawberry will naturally come out looking better. This leads him to spy on Strawberry and sabotage her filming dates, but when she discovers what's going on, she uses his own spying against him, and then confronts him about it, which all gets filmed by the TV crew and is the only thing anyone remembers about the episode. Strawberry hopes that this will be enough to get Piemanne to leave her alone, but the last "episode" begins with him challenging her online to a food truck competition, where he has a trick to play at each stop, but thanks to her friends and her good food, she manages to win. But in the denouement, she points out that at the end of the day, they both still have cafes to run.

The side stories are also nice, though they range in quality both in the writing and artstyles. I did notice that a handful were written by Kristen Gudsnuk, a name which stood out to me because I'm currently rereading her graphic novel series Making Friends (the third volume came out recently, so I'm rereading the first two in preparation). My favorite is probably A Haunting in Berry Bitty City, just because the timing is on-point, and it involves Huck. Though Say Yes to the Dress is a close second, and those both got webisodes, which I'll talk about in an upcoming post.

Author Spotlight: Interview with Kristen Gudsnuk
Thank you so much to Kristen Gudsnuk for the interview. Who is Kristen Gudsnuk? Interview What was your inspiration for Making Friends? Making Friends is basically a depiction of all the things I yearned for as a kid. Toys, friends, and adventure. I read a Chinese fable as a child, about a girl who was such a great artist that everything she drew came to life. I would fantasize about that all…

Daily Update (12/5/22)
I am no longer sick. And I finished Making Friends: Third Time's The Charm by Kristen Gudsnuk. This is the first time I've caught up with an author writing a series and now im upset and impatient 😤... by the time the next one comes out I will probably have forgotten the entire plots of the first three.

From Modern Fantasy, by Rafer Roberts and Kristen Gudsnuk. In which Sage dreams of heroically rescuing the beautiful, delicate elf boy she has a crush on. She's interrupted by a call of distress from her freeloading roommate's trash-bag boyfriend.
In the best way, Modern Fantasy is the comic book you tried to write with your best friend on your living room floor after school. It has all the good stuff: Bright colours! Fun characters! Jokes! An epic adventure! It's also inherently feminist, queer positive, and has thrilling little asides pertaining to our own world, like gentrified neighborhoods and corrupt police.
Is this the comic book that I'll remember forever and ever as having taught me some greater truth? Probably not. But it was a very fun way to spend an afternoon. And it kind of makes me want to make some comics in colour, instead of leaving 'em black-and-white.
There is a particular joy in the shout-y boldness of bright colours.

Over the summer, I read "Making Friends" by Kristen Gudsnuk and enjoyed every page of it.
So much so, that I finally got to draw this sketch of Danny and Madison w/ Prince Neptune.
I can't wait to read volume 2.
