The line between acknowledging and being vocal about industry issues, idol management, company policies and much more and becoming a manager fan that is convinced their favorite idol is persecuted and disrespected at every step is a really fine line which is getting crossed more and more and I feel that we're losing a grip on reality.
Especially when this is a discourse surrounding rich, influential and respected idols. Not that they would be immune, but I'd say it's a bit different if we're talking about a successful man in his 30s or a young boy in a rookie group that gets ignored. Or women idols for that matter. We shouldn't forget them.
I'm saying this because there's always a slippery slope that I saw with Jimin's case and now with Taemin. As much as there were clear and evident issues with Jimin's solo album release, he's also one of the most important idols out there. His name means something. He's among the top succesful idols which says a lot as we know that a big percentage of idols don't get a high level of success or a really significant income. I was never shy in talking about the things that went wrong with that promotion period, the weird weverse articles and everything else, but Jimin also resigned a contract, he's staying at that company and he's part of that group and so far there hasn't been any other news so let's not turn unsaid, imaginary things or our own wishes into reality.
As to Taemin, he too had a short period of promotional activities which seems to be the standard now. What a shame to go through it at such a fast pace that we're not able to sit with an album, to have performances spread throughout, to immerse ourselves. This is the industry's fault and I hope that at some point, people with decision power will realize and make some changes.
Taemin not performing at an end of the year show is unfortunate. Yes, it is. But why the need to exaggerate? Why? Just a couple of weeks ago he had more than 2h of performances in a show that will be taken to Japan. Taemin promoted the album and the title song and having a 2-day concert is not something insignificant. Why are we forgetting this?
Taemin is not disrespected, he's the idol in SM that has had the most opportunities since early on and we can see that until present day. He's been able to perform how he wants and do the concepts he likes and he's actively creating a legacy. He is K-Pop. A 20 something idol doing a cover of Guilty is the proof of the influence Taemin has. This is not something new and certainly not bad. I'm surprised at how many people can't seem to understand that.
We need to find a balance and stop with the persecution theme that has been spread through fandoms.

bpp u still doing quick asks?
what do u think of discussions around idols being able to sing? i feel they dont need to be beyonce but at least they should be able to hold a note and get training.
***
Discourse by k-pop stans about vocals bores me to death. I instantly lose my will to take another breath on this doomed fucked up planet whenever I see a k-pop stan wax poetic about 'vocals' in k-pop. Arguments about vocals is easily the most pointless discussion in k-pop spaces, because people have already decided what matters to them and it shows in the top groups dominating the k-pop industry currently. This is aside the fact that every idol in every major/top group can "hold a note" and sing reasonably well enough to convey the melody of a song, even rappers. Despite what k-pop stans would tell you, the reality is that this industry is simply too competitive for any group to rise to the top of the hierarchy without talented idols who can at the very least sing their own songs. Every k-pop stan votes with their wallets and likes what they like, at the end of the day. And so this is an argument that's already been decided and so, is moot.
The only reason 'vocals' remain a topic of discussion is because k-pop stans enjoy tussling over subjective takes, and because it's the only point of relevance SM stans feel they have left in an industry where groups from every other company easily outperforms SM groups. It's why a select handful of imperfect performances from non-SM groups are taken as representative of those artists' abilities but it never works in reverse. Case in point, the arguments given in response to Wendy's abysmal birthday concert cover this past weekend, vs Jimin's one encore performance. As I've said before, SM stans are the largest contingent of company stans in k-pop spaces, they are the loudest and, especially lately, the most insecure. That's not a diss, just the reality of their current situation.
These arguments are lopsided by design, painfully predictable, and essentially useless. I immediately question the intelligence of anyone I see willingly partaking in that discourse.

While reading her beautiful letter, I started crying from the first sentence. The image of this girl penning these words in a bomb-ridden city knowing her end was near completely broke me.

God I love when people see encouraging neutral, not hateful defenses against petty ones as a personal attack... Saying "your faves can't do this or that" in DEFENSE of your fave is literally no better than those saying it about yours.. Why can't you just say "My fave CAN do this." And show them they can? Why do we have to follow it up with MORE hate? You're not going to end the argument that way, you're just throwing fuel onto the fire for your fave to get even more hate... Plus it's not fair to THEIR fave. Because in the end.. The argument isn't about you, your feelings or the other person's.. It's about the idols being compared. Who shouldn't even be being compared.
Sometimes I'm reminded why I don't participate in kpop fandoms...

Israel wants you to believe the only casulaties from their relelentless 75 year long campaign against Palestinians are all terrorists.
They are trying desperately to dehumanize them
Do not let them. Palestinians are humans, they are innocents. They have hopes and dreams and love and heartbreak and joys and sadness, just like you and me.
Tumblr media
Palestinians are fans, just like you and me. They want to dress up as their favorite superhero.
Tumblr media
They want to see their favorite artist live in concert one day. They listen to their music.
Tumblr media
They like anime, manga, video games, watching their favorite shows over and over. They make fanart and fanfic and write theories and have blogs on here that will never be used again.
They want nothing more than to go back to their fandoms and joys. They want their lives and hopes and dreams back
Do not forget that Palestinians are humans just like you and me and please don't stop fighting for them

many arohas and other fandom members alike, are changing their dp's on their socials to solid black pics. this is to signify unity in mourning. we are encouraging those that feel compelled to do so, to please set your default avatars and photos to solid black to represent your pain and grieving.
furthermore— feel free to reach out to anyone who has this as their default pic; find comfort in others experiencing and suffering the same hurt and loss.

It’s interesting seeing people who don’t even like Jimin have such high expectations from him.
He can post an amazing dance video and be criticized(it’s mostly hate if we’re being honest) by the same people whose favs post mediocre videos which they deem as art
Every mistake others make it’s because they are tired or doing it for fun, but everything Jimin does is evaluated like my guy is trying to enter Harvard and kpop stans and solos are the jury
I wish those people would be tasked with having to analyze a good performance in terms of vocal and dancing technnique, stage presence, all the elements that need to be taken into consideration. I'm pretty much convinced they are incapable, which tells you everything.
A lot of people in these fan communities and some subsections within the BTS fandom are waiting to catch Jimin on the wrong foot and they channel so much of their time and energy on him. If you don't like the guy it's fine to complain from time to time, it's in our nature, but to dedicate yourself to hating him? They're just proving that no matter what, Jimin can't be ignored.

You know, you were right. Kpop stans on Twitter are hating on LE SSERAFIM right now and I don't even understand why. I'm aware of them very peripherally but the hate seems so forced? I swear I saw a tweet hating on Kazuha for her very pretty arabesque it doesn't make any sense lol
***
"Kpop stans on Twitter are hating on LE SSERAFIM right now and I don't even understand why."
Le Sserafim was invited to perform at Coachella 2024
Le Sserafim is currently outperforming k-pop favourites like (G)i-dle, Aespa, and NMIXX
Le Sserafim is a HYBE group
Easy is an album comprised of songs that are practically guaranteed to be hits with a lot of Western/non-k-pop fans, further increasing the chances of Le Sserafim's fandom growing after this comeback
...among other terribly silly reasons.
When I say to focus on the music in k-pop, I probably sound like a broken record, but I say it because the music is the only thing that's actually interesting about this space. That's the only thing that actually changes and remains 'fresh'. Because, everything else: the discourse, the fandom politics, the hate - all of it is painfully, glaringly predictable and boring.
The one thing the majority of k-pop stans do, is bitch and hate. That's partly because of the sort of people drawn to, and who remain in, k-pop spaces; and partly due to fandom norms and structures spearheaded by the Big 3. For this reason, HYBE groups will always have the short end of the stick when it comes to how they are received by the wider k-pop fandom. I've talked about this in more detail before so I won't rehash it.
The one thing I kinda feel sorry about when it comes to Le Sserafim, is that their fandom, comprised primarily of Iz*one fans and newer k-pop stans, are often caught unawares about how Le Sserafim by virtue of being a HYBE group, has a particular bias attached to the group. Their fans don't understand why LSFM in particular is constantly being flamed for things ubiquitous with k-pop groups in general. They lack the arsenal of generational understanding and context that ARMYs have developed from working within the k-pop system as an outlier, because too many LSFM fans had up to this point been comfortable with k-pop fandom politics because they were within the 'in-group'. By supporting LSFM, a lot of them don't quite realize it yet, but they've now become part of the 'out-group'.
I imagine that once LSFM actually performs at Coachella, the animus will be more overt lol. I've got a pretty good idea of how things will go, and I hope I'm wrong, but will hold on to my opinion for now.
My unsolicited advise for Fearnots:
Focus on the fimmies. Focus on their music and return the engagement they give.
Become proactive in creating a second perspective. When there's a song/concept/performance, Fearnots don't have the luxury of leaving the narrative for it to casual fans, those fans will not look kindly on it by default. In fact k-pop stans are more likely to expend effort in deliberately missing the point to disparage the group, than anything else. Fearnots are too small a fandom to control the narrative, but they can create a second perspective. The fandom should themselves define the concept in a way that's true to the group, create spaces to constructively discuss their music and concepts, create resources fans and casuals can use to become educated on the group, etc.
Emphasize what you want to see discussed about the group. K-pop stans only pay attention to groups they perceive to be a threat when there is something to hate. And when there isn't, they create it. It's up to the fans to draw attention within the fandom, to positive things they want to see talked about. Rather than engage directly with hate, ignore it or report, and emphasize what you believe to be positive.
Le Sserafim appears to be having a somewhat bumpy but generally positive comeback. They are getting wins and positive attention in spite of all the hate. I wish them luck.
