PINE MUSHROOM TOFU STEW (송이버섯 손두부찌개) I never know if I should call Korean 찌개 a soup or stew. KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN I really don't eat chicken very often unless I'm traveling overseas and in a country where I don't speak the language and can't understand the menu (even villagers in the remotest villages in the world seem to the English word "chicken"). But when guests come over it is a nice and convenient thing to order. Every country in the world has its own take on fried chicken but I think that Korea has a very good variety compared to other countries. AN APPLE A DAY... When I was younger organic food seemed like a ridiculous fad that only rich people were into. but now that I've gotten older I have realized that pesticides are a serious issue and that if you can afford to buy organic it is the best way to go. actually if you shop at night time like I do sometimes organic products can be cheaper than the non-organic kinds. hear in Korea at e-mart every second and fourth Sunday of the month it is closed so the Saturday before there are a lot of deals that you can get especially if you go at night. for quite a long time I was buying what I thought were organic apples simply because I asked an employee where organic apples were and they showed me. HAIRTAIL FISH Hairtail fish is pretty common in Korea but normally you just get a small piece of it. We found a place that gave the whole thing though it was expensive at about $75 for two people. SPICY STEAMED MONKFISH(아구찜) If you've never seen a monkfish before I highly advise eating it before looking at a picture of one. You might really like it and be able to eat it again after looking at a picture but if you would have looked at a picture first I think it would be hard to get it down😅 Even though I eat fish I really don't like eating anything that was alive and will go strict vegetarian when in countries that make it easy. so whenever I find something as hideous as a monkfish it somehow makes me feel less guilty... in other words I really like 아구찜 The Koreans make it steamed with lots of vegetables and bean sprouts and a nice kick. it's not bad to have if you're in a group of friends but impossible to eat it all by yourself. KOREAN ROASTED FISH (통영생선구이) Since I don't eat pork or beef and rarely ever eat chicken roasted fish is something I eat often and I'm probably a bit more picky about it than other people. A lot of places in Korea will drench roasted fish with some sort of a sauce without even asking you so the place I went to today was a good choice. It's got great side dishes and a great view of the ocean as well. KOREA SWEET RICE BEVERAGE (식혜) I remember when I first came to Korea and thought that drinking a beverage with pieces of rice in it was so strange. After a couple of years I finally gave in and tried some and thought that it was horrible! Thankfully a Korean friend convinced me to try it again and the reason I thought it was horrible was because it was a little warm the first time. The secret to perfect Sikhye (she-kay) is to have it ice cold. if you tried this before and didn't like it, try it again with little pieces of ice in it or half frozen and you will find a new refreshing drink to help defend you against the summer heat! OCEAN EEL BBQ Eel is something that I eat often in Korea and I've shown a video of river eel that I ate with a student before. This is the first time I've shown restaurant ocean eel.. which is much more common here. Usually you have the option to barbecue the meat yourself on your table or have someone prepare it and bring it. DECENT CHEAP KOREAN COFFEE 빽다방 If you're looking for a really large caffeine fix and you don't have that much money on you then I would recommend this coffee shop. 빽다방, or in ENGLISH, Paik's COFFEE, originally started off as a Starbucks copycat called Wonjobucks! In fact the owner Paik (a famous chef here in Korea) was forced to change its name by the legal might of Starbucks herself. The name has changed quite a few times over and over again as you can see by looking at the poster.
