(Analysis) Lehan's bouquet
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ch 27 vs Ch 116. It looks too similar to be a coincidence. What's crazy is Lari put a lot of thought into making the bouquet in Ch 27 for Lehan. Yellow daffodils are his favorite flower, but she also paused at a freesia plant, which the florist explains is "a flower to represent cheering for a new beginning". Lari thought it was perfect, because she wanted to cheer him on on starting his education at the military academy. She chooses a brown ribbon to match his eyes - the color of their FAMILY/House Bellua. The bouquet in Ch 116 is the same: Brown ribbon, daffodils, some yellow flower that could be a random flower, but it looks close enough to be a freesia flower, and what appears to be a small blue hyacinth-type filler flower.
My interpretation of all this, is that by giving her these flowers, he wants her to remember HIM (his fav flower, his brown hair/eyes), and with the addition of the freesia, he wants their relationship to start from zero and start anew into lovers. After all, he's being so aggressive and proactive, visiting her with each break he gets, and showing up so often that there's no way she can ever forget about him. The SFX in Korean is "poog" which loosely translates to "hugging/embracing something soft and light". There's no good ENG equivalent, but its basically the sfx of a bouquet of flowers handed gently over to her. What is highly amusing is there is a heart emoji - yeah it is definitely a bouquet full of romantic intent. .. and Lari is not happy with that :(
Sfx here is an onomatopoeia that has multiple meanings: 1) when you squeeze something/press down on something/hold something tighly 2) enduring pain or suppressing one's emotions 3) being stuck in place Basically... with her expression, she's straight up upset and feeling burdened by Lehan's feelings. Whether her heart is tightening up or she's squeezing the flowers - either way, she's enduring his treatment of her right now. She doesn't want to see him, but she's helpless in kicking him out properly. Even if she's declining his gifts, he still pushes them all onto her despite her not wanting them. She doesn't like any of this: his treatment of her, him wanting to be a romantic interest when she only sees him as a stranger - and before that as a precious younger brother - him trying to court her and touch her... she's very upset but can't do anything if he's that pushy :((((( Poor Lari :((((

Intersexism in Korean history
Im Seong-gu
Im Seong-gu (임성구지) was a Korean intersex person from the early Joseon period (1392–1897), whose life is recorded in the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty.
Biography The dates of Im Seong-gu's life are unknown, but part of it is recorded in the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty, in Book 8 - the Veritable Records of Seonjo (Revised). In the annals, Im Seong-gu is referred to as a "man from Gilju", who married a man and a woman. It also discusses how they were full of both ying and yang, which expressed itself through their gender. They were brought up as a girl, married, but the husband was shocked to see their body on the wedding night. They later re-married to a woman.
In 1548, the Joseon court decided that Im Seong-gu was disturbing society and exiled them. The Saganwon (사간원), the opposition to the monarchy, insisted that Im Seong-gu should be executed. However King Myeongjong of Joseon forbade execution, stating that exile was enough. The annals discuss whether they should be killed, like other similar people in India. They also describes how Im Seong-gu wore men's and women's clothes.
Historiography An alternative interpretation of the Veritable Records describes Im Seong-gu as a bisexual man.
Sa Bangji
Sa Bangji (사방지, 舍方知) was a Korean intersex person during the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897).
Biography Sa Bangji had hypospadias and reared as a feminine gender role. Sa learned sewing from their mother. Sa Bangji had sexual relationships with widows and Bhikkhunis [a fully ordained female in Buddhist monasticism]. In 1462, the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty recorded that Sa Bangji, a slave, had an affair with a widowed noblewoman.
Cultural depictions A film based on Bangji's life was produced in South Korea in 1988 named Sa Bangji.

WEEK 2_ Aesthetic
Tumblr media
In week2, we explored aesthetics, a philosophical exploration of beauty and art, focusing on elements contributing to beauty, interpretations of art, and creativity's role in shaping aesthetic experiences. (The Concept of the Aesthetic (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy), 2022)
During a campus exploration activity, my group and I analyzed restaurant and food court signs, considering their adherence to aesthetic principles. Through this activity, I discovered some notable points.
Tumblr media
Firstly, I noticed similarities between my Studio project and our collaborative trading card curation. We researched each artist's style to inform decisions on color, font, and layout. For example, I selected Shin Dokho, a Korean designer known for bold shape, colors, typography design which also reflecting his culture. (Shin, Dokho, n.d.). In Craft modules, I explored font design's emotional impact on readers. Experimenting with shapes and negative space, I learned how fonts shape atmospheres and enhance project aesthetics.
Additionally, through deep research, I found that aesthetics is also a crucial key to creating timeless artwork like Georgia O'Keeffe's "Red Canna" series (1924), (Georgia O’Keeffe, “Red Canna” | PAFA, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 2014). Or we can also make a connection between this topic and Claude Monet's "Water Lilies" series, which captures the beauty of nature as a theme. (Richman-Abdou, 2018)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moreover, Aesthetics in design and media focuses on creating visually appealing experiences through color, composition, and imagery, enhancing communication and leaving a lasting impression on audiences. Here are some examples:
An exemplary campaign that aligns with these principles is Apple's "Shot on iPhone." (Spence, 2023)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In conclusion, in my perception, aesthetics pertains to the concept, essence, ambiance, and overall atmosphere that an artist conveys.

Marley, how would you have developed Trapper's personality post s3? What do you think would have been some of his flaws that might have come to light?
Thanks for asking, this was really fun to answer!
Well my favourite way of depicting flaws is as a two sides of the same coin sort of thing with virtues. That's one reason I interpret Trapper's temptation to kill the PoW as his protective urge rearing its head, because I like when virtues can get dark. So that's something I'd definitely want to explore.
Say, an episode where Trapper bonds with one of his patients who gets sent out to die unnecessarily as soon as he rejoins his unit, and ends up right back on his table again, except this time he doesn't make it. The commander visits a la Preventative Medicine, and Hawkeye and Trapper clash bc Trapper straight up wants to kill him. Maybe Hawkeye suggests taking out his appendix and therefore taking him off his command as a compromise lol, and you can see that he's kind of freaked out by how far Trapper will go.
Another, somewhat opposing way his protectiveness could be a flaw is if he thinks Hawkeye is going too far on one of his campaigns and takes it upon himself to shut it down to keep Hawkeye from getting court martialed, in a way that negatively affects Hawkeye. I def think this could be in character - Trapper was always pretty ride or die in the first three seasons, but he also had a vibe of navigating Hawkeye's urges with practicalities as well as looking out for Hawkeye (eg Adam's Ribs, Dr Pierce and Mr Hyde, House Arrest) and when the show takes a turn towards consequences being more of a thing I could see him being portrayed as more cautious while still being IC.
Like BJ's line between what he'll join Hawkeye on vs what he'll mock him for seems to be based on usefulness, as far as I can tell, rather than risk. He'll join him in Guerilla My Dreams but he'll mock him in Depressing News, eg. I could see Trapper having a line he'll draw when Hawkeye gets too reckless. Like maybe he'd be supportive in Depressing News but try to shut him down in Guerilla My Dreams, especially if the consequences of Hawkeye getting caught helping a North Korean prisoner escape were considered more realistically, as opposed to them just getting lectured lol.
I could also see the opposite being in character too of course - like he already happily took out an appendix with Hawkeye, plus he's done stupid shit himself like the aforementioned Radar's Report or trying to desert in Mail Call, so maybe he'd join him no matter how risky his plans are. But yk, it's a possible direction the show could've theoretically gone in. It wouldn't necessarily be contradictory either, just yk, a little hypocritical.
Though if you go with the ride or die vibe, that could also be a virtue taken so far it becomes a flaw at times. Maybe he should try to stop Hawkeye sometimes, but he doesn't, and one or the other nearly gets court martialed, but like, in a serious way lol. Or maybe they antagonize the wrong person and Hawkeye gets hurt. Maybe Trapper thinks that he should be the realistic, cautious one, but he fails to follow through because he enjoys Hawkeye's campaigns too much.
Like in the first three seasons I see him as finding Hawkeye pretty inspiring and admirable, because he's idealistic in a way Trapper isn't, which is partly why Trapper helps him on his campaigns and stuff. He helps inspire Trapper to try to make whatever differences he can.
But his cynicism could be a good flaw too, so conversely maybe as the war wears on and Hawkeye's campaigns usually end up going nowhere and his own little hope spots end sadly (eg Kim) he could fall into a more BJ-esque "what's the point, you can't change anything" role.
Or he could still support Hawkeye but in a going through the motions kind of way, where it's obvious he doesn't think it'll make a difference and he's just doing it as a distraction from the boredom and despair, and it causes a few arguments between them, with Hawkeye annoyed at his attitude. Yk, really explore Hawkeye's idealistic need to affect the world around him vs Trapper's more fatalistic attitude and how it could cause them to clash.
Also I feel like Mail Call would have to get a dramatic reprise with some actual build up and good writing behind it lol, so something with Trapper snapping and trying to desert and Hawkeye having to pull him back from the edge would be good. In general the fact that Mail Call was so sudden is like... idk, you have to downplay it a bit because it's not sustainable, but it does suggest that Trapper is hanging on by a thread at all times lol. So I mean, exploring that would be interesting. How close is Trapper to snapping and deserting at any given time? Is there an element of self-destructiveness to it? Is he at risk of walking into the minefield at some point? You could go some dark places with that.
Though incidentally I don't think Trapper knocking Hawkeye out of his way was a relevant character note (people compare it to the Period of Adjustment punch lol but it's really not comparable at all to me) and I don't think BJ-esque deep-seated rage is really his thing. Maybe it could've been if Wayne Rogers had stayed on and BJ had never appeared and they'd built on it more, but as-is I don't think he's the "taking my feelings out on other people" type. When he lashes out in Radar's Report and Mail Call he has different reasons for it, and Hawkeye is the main instigator against Frank, Trapper tends to just go along with it.
Like I think instead of repressed/sublimated rage which imo BJ and Hawkeye both have to an extent, Trapper maybe has repressed despair.
(Also, speaking of Trapper and despair, if Trapper got a dream in Dreams it would have to feature his kids playing hopscotch in a minefield or something, right? Combine his protectiveness, his helplessness, and his difficulty imagining an end to the war. Maybe it could shift to him operating on one of them with Potter handing him a scalpel to keep his sinister commander motif which I love.)
lol ANYWAY my answer's kind of all over the place, sorry, but yk, there are a lot of potential directions to go with Trapper's flaws imo. As far as what I'm into I could be down for any of this, but I really like the idea of a Hawk v Trap version of Preventative Medicine where Trapper wants to go too far for Hawkeye, Trapper supporting Hawkeye against his better judgement when the consequences could be bad for Hawkeye, and Trapper's fatalistic cynicism driving him to dark, self-destructive places occasionally.

After watching The Devil Judge I did some very brief research on the South Korean judicial system, to try and understand which parts were dystopian theatricality and which had some basis in actual South Korean legal practices, which are pretty different than what I'm familiar with (the US American legal system as interpreted by the US media).
These are just two sources, they could be wrong! If you know more, and like talking about it, I'd love to hear it.
Links and quotes on the South Korean judicial system and judge training below the cut:
Tumblr media
The context from this Asia Society article does help me make sense of some of the legal stuff, although a lot of it I think is still theatrical inventions for the show:
https://asiasociety.org/education/korean-judge
"in Korea the judge alone is responsible for the realization of justice. His part in the trial is consistent with the traditional role of magistrate; he acts as a mediator, the natural ally of honest people. Since the style of the Korean judge lends itself to mediation, what starts as a Western style trial easily shifts to encourage reconciliation. The judge is supported in his efforts toward compromise by the lawyers, and the compromise agreement is considered an official court document with the same legal force as a judge's verdict."
"often a Korean trial does not result in a verdict. Actually, the courtroom in Korea is less a setting for lawsuits than a forum where people air grievances before an objective third person. The judge, really a mediator, helps them reach an amicable solution."
"the Korean judge serves as chief questioner of all witnesses. He offers suggestions, expresses opinions and controls the hearings even when lawyers are present. He determines right and wrong and acts as a truth-seeking specialist empowered to get to the bottom of the trouble. The lying witness should be exposed, the cunning plaintiff thwarted and the ignorant defendant allowed a fair hearing."
" Lawyers begin their careers as judges and then retire into private legal practice... Lawyers are often decades older than judges and see themselves as colleagues who advise and help the judge. The judge discovers the truth; the lawyers advise him and help their clients through the bureaucratic maze. Since most lawyers began as judges, they identify more with the judges than with their clients."
Here are the requirements for judges in real S. Korea, from the Supreme Court's english language website.  Not sure if it's also true for The Devil Judge's dystopian version.
https://www.scourt.go.kr/eng/judiciary/organization/members.jsp
Here is more about requirements for judges from this interview with a South Korean judge I found at
https://law.unimelb.edu.au/centres/alc/engagement/newsletters/alc-newsletter-december-2018/interview-with-judge-yunkyung-bae
"judges like myself who were appointed before the reforms in 2009 did not need to have a law degree and legal experience. Everyone needed to pass the National Korean Bar Examination and to be trained in JRTI for two years. The National Bar Examination was very difficult and only about three percent of candidates passed at that time. We are expected to build our judicial careers whilst working in the courts after graduating from the Judicial Research and Training Institute.  Since 2009, however, only graduates who have completed a three-year postgraduate law degree are eligible to sit the National Korean Bar Examination. According to recent press, the pass rate of the Examination is now around 50 percent. Also the Supreme Court now requires judicial applicants to have at least five years of experience working as an attorney before being eligible for a judicial appointment. The length of this practical experience requirement will gradually increase to ten years before a person will become eligible for judicial appointment."
Her path to becoming a judge was: (is this similar to what Kim Ga On would have done?)
"I completed my bachelor’s degree in Economics at Seoul National University. During my degree, I took a law subject which sparked my interest in law and ultimately led me to decide to pursue a legal career. At the time, you did not need a law degree to enter the legal profession, but you did need to pass the National Korean Bar Examination. After passing, I was admitted to study in the Judicial Research and Training Institute for a period of two years. Becoming a judge was greatly appealing to me, because judges can resolve disputes impartially and independently according to law and conscience. I was appointed as a Judge in the Seoul Central District Court upon graduation in 2007."

Rewatch: The Great Doctor, episodes 1-5
This series is also known as Faith.
It was a joy to rediscover this series, which I ate up quite some time ago. It's a mashup of time travel, science fantasy, medical, and romance. There's an undependable wormhole, gory medical stuff, fight scenes, strong female characters, and magical powers. There is political intrigue.
Most of the story so far is set in Goryeo, apparently around the early 1350's. King Gongmin and Queen/Princess Noguk, newly wed, are waylaid on their way from Yuan, a Mongolian dynasty, to Goryeo in order to rule. While stuck at an inn, the queen is attacked and her neck slashed. General Choi Young enters a swirling light in an attempt to go to heaven to find a doctor who can save the queen's life. He winds up at a doctor's convention in modern-day (2012) Seoul, where he forces doctor Yoo Eun Soo to save a convention vendor's life to prove she can also save the queen. He then kidnaps her through the wormhole, obliterating a SWAT team in the process of escaping the convention center, showing an ability to blast adversaries with electric waves from his hands. The doctor saves the princess. The swirling light disappears just as the doctor is prevented from entering it, and the doctor is stuck in the past. Intrigue, violence, and romantic sparks ensue.
There are evil folks with magic like powers: A woman who can kill or set fires with heat from her hands and a man who can kill with his flute-playing. There is a power hungry villiain.
I had to hold my hands in front of my eyes during the surgery scenes.
This is not a QL, but the character of King Gongmin is queer coded. His Wikipedia entry says the historical record shows him to have had both male pederastic and female relationships during his reign. There has been long-argued disagreement in the queer community as to whether pederasts are part of the community, but that is a matter for the present day and not for discussions of 14th century Korea. I question as to whether anyone of any age can give consent for sex to a mid-millenium Korean king, given the king's absolute power.
The script features strong women characters. While the doctor is initially cartoonish, focusing on making money in her profession, a scene in episode 4 or 5 shows her fully conscious of her situation, telling off the villain that he will not end well, delivered in front of a court audience. There is a deaf mute pharmacist and a queen's attendant who are strong as well. Later scenes (post episode 5) show women doing battle to defend the palace.
While this is clearly a drama, there is plenty comic relief throughout the series, at least in these 5 episodes.
Watched this 5 to 10 years ago, so while I remembered some of the major plot points and time travels, I didn't remember a lot of the details or scenes. One particular exchange from late in the series - between the doctor and the main villain - sticks in my mind given today's realities, but I'll get to that when we hit it in the series.
Spoilers follow. You can skip to my notes on episode 6-8.
There was a convenient coincidence in which the doctor's cell complained out loud about running low on power when she was being held hostage and the hero was nearby to come to the rescue.
There is an oddly funny flashback to where a fortune teller predicts the doctor will meet and fall in love with a man from the past and have to walk through a door. We know at this point that the prediction came true, but the doctor's interpretation at the time - we get a flashback within a flashback of the doctor's past failed relationship.
Given Choi Young's lightning bolt powers where he not only fends off the police but shatters the convention center's glass doors, he doesn't seem to use his powers very much in the past when the king's entourage are under attack. So, a minor plot hole.
Episodes 1 to 5 provide a good first act for my review, taking us from the attack on the princess and the kidnapping to Choi Young's attempt to rescue the doctor from the villain's residence, telling the villain at the end of episode 5 that he is there because he loves the doctor.
Continue with episode 6-8

#interprete #conference #traduction #traductionsimultanee #traductionlive #multilingue #interpretation #evenement #Paris #Nice #France

Reverend Moon Rises Above Ailing Businesses (1999)
By Don Kirk, International Herald Tribune Feb. 5, 1999
Tumblr media

The Reverend Sun Myung Moon, leader of the Unification Church, opened a "world culture and sports festival" Thursday night asking participants: "What happens to us when we die?" His temporal business empire in South Korea, meanwhile, was asking: How do we repay debts approaching $2 billion
Weakness emerged within the Tong Il group, a conglomerate whose name means "unification," as Mr. Moon toured South Korea over the past week drumming up support for his church and his companies.
"The Tong Il companies suffer from bad management," said Huh Man Jo, who is monitoring the restructuring efforts of Korea's chaebol, or conglomerates, for the government's newly formed financial supervisory service. "They relied too much on church donations. It was a kind of moral hazard."
Mr. Huh said the debts of the group's 16 companies exceed 2 trillion won ($1.7 billion).
Its four leading companies, which manufacture products ranging from ginseng tea to tank guns, were all bankrupt awaiting reorganization under court supervision, he said.
Mr. Moon appeared oblivious to his earthly problems Thursday night. Alexander Haig, a former secretary of state and White House chief of staff during Richard Nixon's presidency, introduced him as "a leading force for inter-religious dialogue and understanding between peoples of all backgrounds."
The closest Mr. Moon came to mentioning the companies that he founded in the 1960s as the basis for his worldwide ministry was when he told a rapt audience that "Earth is but a speck of dust."
The spirit world that people enter after death transcends time and space, Mr. Moon said, speaking in Korean after a six-course banquet. Interpreters translated into seven languages for an audience that included former Third World heads of state and ambassadors. "There are no factories there to produce food," Mr. Moon said. "There are no automobile factories. There is nothing like that."
In the real world, the Tong Il group's flagship Tong Il Heavy Industries Co., founded in 1962, has suffered the most of any of the companies in the group.
The factory, which produces motor vehicle transmissions, has had to lay off 40 percent of its or conglomerates, for the government.
2,000 workers as a result of sagging car sales in South Korea, said Seo Pyong Kyu, a manager in the group's financial planning department.
"There is a cash flow deficit," Mr. Seo said. "Production is very low."
Church donations, a traditional source of funding in hard times, "have helped but are very much limited," said Mr. Seo. "Maybe we can expect the Reverend Moon to help, but it is not certain."
Mr. Moon, who maintains a headquarters in New York but has been spending much of his time on a vast farm project in Brazil, focused throughout his speaking tour of South Korea on the theme of "family ethics and world peace," the topic of a three-day series of seminars sponsored by the church. The festival is scheduled to wind up Sunday with a mass wedding in which 40,000 couples will exchange vows in Seoul's Olympic Stadium in a ceremony broadcast worldwide by cable. As in previous mass weddings, Mr. Moon himself has personally selected many of the marriage partners flying in from throughout the world, from submitted photographs and brief biographies.
Periodically, however, the realities of South Korea's economic crisis intruded upon his national tour.
At stops on the way, workers who had lost their jobs staged demonstrations accusing Mr. Moon's lieutenants of illegally dismissing them without pay. During an appearance in Pusan, South Korea's largest port city, workers from Tong Il Oil Heavy Industries briefly threatened violence.
Mr. Moon did not talk directly to the workers, leaving negotiations to his lieutenants. The response from management was not sympathetic.
"They want to get money from the company," said Ahn Ho Yeol, vice president in charge of the Korean branch of its Youth Federation for World Peace. "We cannot make money. They did not work. We did not offer them money."
Mr. Moon opened his remarks Thursday night by calling for "the realization of a culture of love, a global culture of heart."
Pak Bo Hee, who co-founded The Washington Times with Mr. Moon, goes to North Korea on Monday to negotiate the rights to open a tourist service to the North and to join the celebration of the 57th birthday of the North Korean leader Kim Jong Il on Feb. 16.
Tong Il Heavy Industries, meanwhile, survives on military contracts that it first obtained during the rule of Park Chung Hee, a former general who ruled South Korea for 18 years until his assassination in 1979. "We make rifles and cannon for tanks," said a company official. "The contract is going on."

Excerpted from article: The below excerpt is from a Forbes article ‘Reaching for the Stars’ by Toni Fitzgerald that reveals that Paul Rogers, a professional Moonie, was able to make profit with Moon-associated businesses during the South Korean financial crisis. Rogers is known to have had strong business relationships with notable UC leaders, such as both Kwak and Pak.
In the late 1990s, the darkest days of South Korea’s financial crisis, operators such as Paul Rogers of Lehman Brothers were parachuting in to pick through the bargains. But amid all the moneylosing units being shed by the country’s conglomerates, what caught his eye was something that wasn’t for sale: a vacant 12-acre lot. It was in the heart of Yeouido, the island in the Han River that serves as Seoul’s financial and broadcasting district.
Owned by Reverend Moon Song-myung’s Unification Church Foundation, the giant lot had sat empty for three decades. Best known internationally for its cultish practices and its members, called Moonies, the church is also a business empire with interests ranging from media properties to North Korean industrial ventures. And like other Korean conglomerates, it needed money. “Investment banks were making a quick buck from acquiring and flipping distressed assets,” says Rogers, then Lehman’s head of structured finance for Asia. “I saw a much bigger opportunity: developing whole city blocks and making an impact on Asian cities which are sorely in need of iconic but commercially successful projects.”
Excerpt from article: Excerpted from Joongang Daily's 2010 article on Kook Jin Moon, 'Business Engine Of A Global Faith' by Kim Hyung-eun
Chairman [Kook Jin Moon] Moon, in a recent interview with Forbes, said he has high hopes for TIC, and that he is proud the company produces axles for armored vehicles. TIC was established by merging several subsidiaries of Tongil Heavy Industries, which previously supplied hardware for the Korean armed forces.
Other units include building management company Seilo, helicopter operator Tongil Air Systems and agricultural company Pyeongnong.
Through these entities, Tongil Group finances about 20 religious and educational institutions, including the Sun Moon University, Sunhwa Arts High School, music group the Little Angels and others.
But Tongil Group is not the only fiefdom in the Unification Church's business empire. It's not to be confused with Unification Church International, which is run by Kook-jin's older brother Hyun-jin and whose major businesses include the The Washington Times and True World Foods in the U.S. as well as Marriott hotels and the Central City complex in Korea.
Video: A 1 minute clip from the Japanese news of a Japanese UC service in 1998 where a church leader begged and guilted members to make a donation. This was a year after the South Korean financial crash and UC families in Japan were forced to make a $16,000 donation. This was during Japan’s decade(s) of economic stagnation.

Sun Myung Moon dies at 92; led controversial Unification Church (as reported in the US)
Tumblr media
South Korean immigrated to the U.S. and became the wealthy leader of an unorthodox religious movement that was labeled a cult and featured mass marriage ceremonies.
By Elaine Woo
Los Angeles Times  September 3, 2012
The Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the self-proclaimed Messiah from South Korea who led the Unification Church, one of the most controversial religious movements to sweep America in the 1970s, has died. He was 92.
Moon, who had been hospitalized with pneumonia in August, died Monday at a hospital in Gapyeong, South Korea, church officials announced.
Although greeted as a Korean Billy Graham when he arrived in the United States four decades ago, Moon gradually emerged as a religious figure with quite different beliefs, whose movement was labeled a cult and whose followers were mocked as "Moonies." At the height of his popularity, he claimed 5 million members worldwide, a figure that ex-members and other observers have called inflated. Those numbers are believed to have fallen into the thousands today.
Moon offered an unorthodox message that blended calls for world peace with an unusual interpretation of Christianity, strains of Confucianism and a strident anti-communism. He was famous for presiding over mass marriage ceremonies that highlighted Unification's emphasis on traditional morality.
What also made Moon unusual was a multinational corporate vision that made him a millionaire many times over. He owned vast tracts of land in the U.S. and South America, as well as dozens of enterprises, including a ballet company, a university, a gun manufacturer, a seafood operation and several media organizations, most notably the conservative Washington Times newspaper. He also owned United Press International.
Moon was “the object of more suspicion and enmity than almost any other contemporary religious leader,” Eileen Barker, an authority on the Unification Church and new religions at the London School of Economics, wrote some years ago.
The short, balding immigrant evangelist was not charismatic in the usual sense. He spoke poor English and gave few interviews. His sermons, delivered through interpreters, rambled on for hours and often exhorted followers against using “love organs” in promiscuous behavior or homosexual relationships.
His ideas often seemed bizarre: He believed in numerology, proposed building a highway around the world and for a while embraced a Zimbabwean man as the reincarnation of a son [Heung-jin] who had died in an accident.
He courted the powerful with surprising success, at one time counting among his friends and allies Christian right leader Jerry Falwell, who defended Moon when he was tried and later convicted in the U.S. on charges of tax evasion [and document forgery]; the Nation of Islam's Louis Farrakhan, who shared pulpits with him; and former President George H.W. Bush, who appeared at Unification Church-affiliated events in the U.S. and abroad.
In 2004, Moon invited guests to a U.S. Senate office building in Washington, where he had himself crowned "none other than humanity's Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent." The ceremony was attended by a dozen members of Congress, several of whom later told reporters they had been misled about the purpose of the event.
His religious journey purportedly began 16 years after his birth on Jan. 2, 1920, in what is now North Korea. According to biographical accounts, Jesus appeared to the young Moon on a Korean mountaintop on Easter Sunday in 1936. From this meeting Moon divined that his job was to complete Jesus' mission of creating heaven on Earth.
During high school in Korea and at [evening classes at a Technical High School connected to] Waseda College in Tokyo, where he studied electrical engineering, Moon claimed to receive more messages from spiritual figures, including Buddha and Moses. He later said that Buddha told him to seek the unification of world religions "in a common effort to salvage the universe."
After World War II, Moon founded a church and began preaching full-time, often speaking out against communism. His strong political stands caused problems with the North Korean government, which jailed him on charges of bigamy and draft evasion. He was freed in 1950. [In 1955 in Seoul he was jailed on charges of draft evasion.]
In 1954, he founded the Holy Spirit Assn. for the Unification of World Christianity in Seoul. Three years later he published "The Divine Principle," the main text of his church.
Unification theology is complex, but a central tenet is to right the wrongs of Adam and Eve. According to the Divine Principle, Satan seduced Eve, who then had illicit relations with Adam and spawned impure children.
Moon regarded Jesus as the second Adam, but Jesus was crucified before he could marry and bring forth sinless progeny. Thus, according to Moon, mankind's salvation depended on a third savior to appear on Earth and marry a pure woman. Together they would become the "true parents" of mankind and beget pure families to populate the kingdom of God.
The new Christ, Moon prophesied, would be born in Korea.
Moon's beliefs did not go over well with leaders of mainline Christianity. He was turned down when he applied for membership to the major ecumenical organizations, the National Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches.
"His theology was heretical," said David Bromley, a Virginia Commonwealth University sociologist who co-authored "Moonies in America," a major study of the Unification movement during its peak in the 1970s.
Church members addressed Moon and his wife, Hak Ja Han, as the "True Parents," a title that outraged many of the actual parents of Moon's followers. The Moons moved to the U.S. in 1971 and eventually lived in a 35-room mansion on an estate in Irvington, N.Y.
Moon's first marriage, to Choe Sung-kil, ended in divorce in 1957. He had a son with her and another with Kim Myung-hee, who lived with Moon during the 1950s. In 1960 he married Han, then a young disciple. They had 14 children, of whom 10 survive him. He was believed to have more than 40 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Had Moon restricted his recruiting to ethnic Koreans, he might have avoided criticism, Bromley said. But the church began targeting white middle-class youths on or near college campuses, a tactic also pursued by two other sects that attained notoriety in the 1970s, the Children of God and the Hare Krishnas.
An anti-cult movement rose in opposition to the groups and created a market for "deprogrammers" who abducted church members and tried to reverse the brainwashing they believed was fundamental to the cults' influence.
Moon promoted interracial and intercultural marriages and arranged thousands of unions. Couples matched by the church were instructed to refrain from having intercourse for 40 days, partly to ensure that the unions were based on “pure love” rather than carnal desire. In one of the church's most publicized events, Moon blessed 6,500 couples [it was 2,075 couples] in New York's Madison Square Garden in 1988. [It was 1982.]
Followers were expected to live communally under austere conditions, although the church later moved away from group living as members matured and started their own families. Each member also was expected to raise money for the church, often by peddling flowers or other innocuous items at airports and shopping malls.
In 1978 Congress investigated the church as part of a broader probe into Korean influence-buying. A congressional subcommittee concluded that Moon’s organization had violated U.S. tax, immigration, banking and currency laws. In 1982 he was convicted on tax evasion [and document forgery] charges and served 11 months in a federal prison in Danbury, Conn.
That year, he launched the Washington Times, which positioned itself as a conservative alternative to the Washington Post. It won loyal readers in the White House and among conservative strategists but has been a chronic money-loser, surviving on more than $2 billion in subsidies from the church. Circulation fell to about 40,000 daily copies in 2010, when a family feud caused the patriarch to repurchase the paper after having given control of it four years earlier to his eldest son, Preston [Hyun-jin Moon].
Times special correspondent Jung-yoon Choi in Seoul contributed to this report.

Anyway, in order to make the sea route safe, he was also eager to clear up pirates, which was the original purpose, and it is recorded in the Samguk Sagi that the Silla slave trade almost disappeared thanks to Jang Bo-go's performance. do. In 838, in the pilgrimage to Ipdang-gu, Ennin [31], who was considered the best monk in Japan at the time, even though the Japanese went to China without going through Silla, they hired Silla interpreters Kim Jeong-nam and Park Jung-jang, etc. Silla's maritime influence had grown to such an extent that each ship was assigned to accompany them. This is because most of the Chinese coastal areas were also active in large numbers during this period. Even after that, Ennin asked Jang Bo-go to protect him so that he could safely finish his schedule during Tang Dynasty activities.
In addition, Jang Bo-go built a temple called Jeoksan Beophwawon in the Shandong Peninsula, and it is said that monks from Silla and Japan stayed here.[32] It is said that this Jeoksan Beophwawon was run by Jangyeong and other Silla people, and they were in charge of gathering the re-dang Silla people by holding regular Buddhist meetings. It seems to have played a role similar to that of the Korean church in modern Koreatown. Jeoksan Beophwawon is presumed to have disappeared during the extensive suppression of Buddhism during the Tang Dynasty, but it has been restored and remains in China. On the other hand, it is presumed that Jang Bo-go also established Beophwawon in Cheonghae-jin and Hawon-dong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do. It is unknown what kind of Buddhist ceremony was held here because the records are not detailed, but the fact that the Amitabha triad was enshrined suggests that it was related to the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva faith. Members of Sillabang society were mostly occupations closely related to the sea, and the relationship between the people of the sea and the faith of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva at the time can be confirmed in the Minjangsa section of the Samguk Yusa.
In addition, the above-mentioned Ennin accurately recorded the help of Jang Bo-go in his travelogue called 《Ipdanggubeop Pilgrimage》[33]. Thanks to this, the portrait of Jang Bo-go holding a bow is still at Jeoksan Seonwon in Mt. Hiei, Kyoto, Japan. He was a very international figure in the East Asian world at the time, as his achievements and reputation crossed Korea, China and Japan.
Jang Bo-go frequently dispatched instructor ships to the Tang Dynasty, remotely controlled the Sillabang society on the east coast of the Tang Dynasty, and was able to gain huge trade profits by utilizing it. According to Ennin's diary, on June 27, 839, two instructor ships sent by Jang Bo-go arrived at Jeoksanpo, and it was said that a person named Choi Hun-sip-rang, who had the title of Cheonghae-jin soldier, was trained as Maemulsa[34]. Hoon Choi's schedule stopped at Jeoksan Court House[35] to comfort Jang Young, who was managing Jang Bogo on behalf of Bogo, and for seven and a half months, he stopped at major ports on the east coast of China, such as Yusanpo, Haeju, Choju, and Yangju, to carry out trade activities. It was to return to the enemy cannon. It is estimated that Jeoksanpo was the main base for the Chinese side of the Jang Bogo trade ship.
Jang Bo-go periodically dispatched a trading fleet called Hoe-sa to Japan in the east. The Hoe-sa was only a trade fleet personally sent by Jang Bo-go, but it was so large that it resembled an official envoy, so it was Japan's official foreign trade at the time. Dazaifu [36] in Kyushu, which served as a window, argued that they should be expelled instead of accepting the company history.

In a landmark moment for LGBTQ+ couples in South Korea, a high court in the nation has ruled that spousal coverage under the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) should be applied equally to both LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ couples. It’s the first time the legal status of same-sex partners has ever been recognized in South Korea. The decision came about due to a lawsuit filed by couple So Sung-uk and Kim Yong-min, who argued that they should be entitled to the same spousal insurance benefits the country grants to heterosexual couples even though same-sex marriage is not yet legal in South Korea. While So and Kim could not legally marry, they had a wedding in 2019 after having lived together six years, according to the Korea Herald. In 2020, they registered with the NHIS, Kim as the policyholder and So as the dependent. Later that year, NHIS revoked So’s insurance status and ordered him to provide back payments after deciding his marriage was not valid. A lower court initially ruled against the couple, but the Seoul high court overturned the ruling on Tuesday and ordered the insurance service to cover the costs of both sides of the case. “The plaintiff and his partner are both male, but they agreed to recognize each other as loving partners who take care of each other,” the ruling reportedly stated. “One financially relies on the other. They declared their partnership before their families and friends. This makes their relationship no different in essence from that of a married couple.” The ruling did emphasize, however, that it should not be interpreted as recognizing same-sex marriage as legal. But the couple was still overjoyed. “I feel delighted because I felt like the judges told us through this court decision that my feelings of love for my husband shall not be a target of curse, ignorance or insult,” said So. “I can say with confidence that love wins, and discrimination or hate do not.” The couple’s attorney, Park Han-hee, who is transgender, also noted the importance of this moment. “This court ruling is not just about individuals fighting over insurance payments,” she said. “Instead, I hope the ruling can set a precedent that discourages the state from hindering same-sex couples’ rights.” http://dlvr.it/Sk2VSn
