Psycho-Pass: Providence - A Review

Well, I just go back from seeing Providence in theaters.

Wow. What an excellent movie. So worth the price of admission and the hour drive each way.

I'll do a more in-depth analysis of the story once it releases for digital and I can re-watch it at my leisure, but I wanted to get my first thoughts down before I get to sleep.

So: Non-spoiler version first.

If you're caught up through all 3 Sinners of the System movies, this movie will be a great segue into the next part of the story. If you've already seen Season 3 and First Inspector, as others have mentioned, this will fill in a LOT of holes.

I think each of our core characters get their moments in the movie, though the lion's share certainly goes to Kogami and Akane. They have a few great conversations in this movie, and I think by the end their relationship is on the most equal footing it has ever been.

Gino also has some wonderful moments. Not a lot of them, but enough that we start to understand who he is and what he is trying to achieve. He and Ko get a few moments to work out their...differences, and by the end, although he fails in his self-appointed goal (he and Ko both), I think it places him in a way that he will grow even further in the future.

Mika took a while to grow on me, but boy has she. I really liked her in this movie. There is one interaction she had with Gino that really made me chuckle, and overall, I really liked how willing she was to step up and move beyond the box she's always put herself in.

Frederica seems very intriguing. I hope we see more of her in future projects.

It was great to get an introduction to Kei and Arata, and to understand where they tie into this story.

Overall the plot was excellent, as always. There were several twists I didn't see coming.

I also have to applaud this series again for its excellent antagonistic characters. Because, in many ways, our antagonist was correct. Providence, indeed.

This series is in a lot of ways reminiscent to me of works like Brave New World by Aldous Huxley or to some degrees Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Phillip K. Dick, which I believe have both been referenced in this series. But it isn't so much the technological parallels that strike me , as the ability of the authors to understand where society seems to be going, and then writing the story to highlight the realities such changes would bring about.

We are facing this future now. With the rise of (primitive) AI technology in recent months, we're going to have to start considering the BIG questions. And this work is a great what-if scenario of where we could end up and the long-term ramifications of such choices.

Now to the spoiler version. You know the drill.

I really liked that Ko's attention is immediately centered on Akane when everyone is walking in. And his utter willingness to throw himself in front of an explosion to save Akane (again), just really made me love these two so much. The first phone call is great, because Kogami is lying to Akane (and also possibly to himself), and she doesn't put up with his bullshit. The second one shows his utter faith and trust in her. And that letter? God I loved that letter. The parallels. I think of all of them, though, my favorite scene of theirs was in the hospital room. I do very much want this couple to end up together, but I think it is oversimplifying their relationship to want them to romantically involved. There are so many layers to who they are as individuals and to how they interact together and apart that calling them romantic interests doesn't even begin to cover the first page. That all being said, I am really excited to see where this story goes and to how these characters develop.

Saiga's death was a true gut punch for me. He is one of my favorite mentor characters, and that death scene was just...powerful.

The reveal of Akira and the truth of his and Milica's stories was also very heart-breaking. It grounds the characters left behind in reality and propels the story forward, and each of them only get a few minutes and a few dozen lines to convey everything. Great storytelling there.

The final scenes of them watching Akane shoot Kasei, and of her being incarcerated while Ko is let free at the same time...the way Akane falls to the floor sobbing while Ko declares that he will set her free? Those moments are going to live in my head rent free for a long time.

I'm tempted to go and get a premium crunchyroll membership just so that I can watch Season 3 in English dub. Doesn't look like First Inspector is done yet, but hopefully here soon.

Okay, last set of thoughts and then I'm done for the moment.

Every character, from SIbyl to Ko to Gino to Mika, to even Saiga, seemed to put Akane on a pedestal. They commend her for her clear hue, for her sense of justice and morailty, her determination, and on and on. And I think it's interesting, because even after she shoots Kasei at the end, it's clear that those feelings do not change. Akane is not perfect, but she is willing to put everything before her sense of justice, and it makes her very compellig and powerful.

I'll probably do a deeper dive on Akane and Psycho-Pass in general at a later date, but for the moment it's almost midnight and I am tired. But thank you for reading my thought-spew. I'll get to a more polished version eventually.

a/n: i love akane & kogami as a pairing. not necessarily even in a romantic way. i just think their soul connection is so interesting. i like to think kogami struggles a lot with leaving her behind, since we mostly see akane’s struggle. i’m leaving a 2nd author’s note at the end if you feel like getting that far. i hope at least one of you enjoy this little blurb.

He thinks of her in passing.

The thought appears at the tickle of tall, swaying brush on an overgrown path. It barely grazes him but the sensation lingers. A soft, forgiving touch. A smile. Then by his next footstep, the thought is buried and a sigh released.

On a slow day, he could conjure up the smell of her hair. They never genuinely embraced, but the scent of eucalyptus and shampoo were just strong enough to leave an impression. It brings back thoughts of peering over her shoulder, keyboards tapping, and chocolate brown eyes.

And if Kogami didn’t know better, he might trust that the faceless, small figure he carried around in his dreams was the weight and size of Akane. A small frame, slim and not particularly withstanding. He thinks that maybe if he held her too tightly, she might crumble and turn to dust.

On a bad night, the girl in the dream, turned nightmare, grows colder and colder in his arms. A stark contrast to the warm red pooling on her stomach and trailing down his arms. It sticks and dries there.

He can usually force his eyes open, barely saving the girl from her fate. After he showers, the memory of blood seems to uncake and wash down the drain. But Kogami won’t sleep again til the next sun down.

This is one of those nights.

Kogami sits up, a bead of sweat rolls down his neck. Slowly, he unfurls his brow and releases the grip he has on the hem of his shirt. Gray eyes scan the room instinctively -- they search for signs of movement, disarray… any unusuality. A habit he’s had ever since working with the MWPSB.

A lamp gathers dust on a small wooden nightstand. His boots, muddy and well-traveled, rest near the door frame. Moths flutter around a small mirror reflecting only a shred of light. But nothing in the moonlit room looks off. Only the emptiness of his stomach and an ache for something he can’t quite understand. It gnaws and squeezes within him.

Kogami reaches a bandaged hand, injured from a recent job, up to ruffle his ever messy hair. It does nothing to adjust the bedhead. If anything, it’s worse now.

Without a sound, Kogami rises to his feet and makes his way to a dingy, small kitchen. The space is both unfamiliar yet memorized, like most things these days. Impersonal and under analysis. Such is the life of a mercenary and former detective. He arches his back in a stretch, white shirt revealing pale skin and toned muscle. Past scars speak loudly of his history with violence and bad luck. Or arguably good luck, considering he walks around with these marks today.

Would he have so many if he hadn’t left behind such valuable partners? Who could know.

The wrapped hand then reaches for a glass, placing it under the faucet of a battered, dented sink. And as water streams into the cup, he recalls a dripping sound. A gunshot followed by a heavy splatter.

Ah, that’s right.

The nightmare.

The whimpering of an all too precious voice. A hand, much too soft, gripping his collar as a choked plea.

Round eyes. Short, damp hair. Akane, as her mind slips away from her. No amount of physical strength can keep a soul from departing from its own body.

The grip on his glass tightens. He’s all but memorized every act and scene of this disgusting play. At this point, it seems more like a memory than a cruel creation of the mind. Kogami would give anything to pour these thoughts down the sink. To watch them spill over the edge of the cup’s edge and down a pipe. But for whatever reason, he chooses to ponder the recurring dream.

Maybe to simply reminisce.

With a few taps of his finger on a cigarette pack, he sits by a half open window. It overlooks a city. One that bustles and brightens and blisters with people in the distance. It reminds him a little of home. Or what was his home.

The lighter stutters, sparking an orange glow. He takes a drag, letting the bitterness coat his tongue and throat. Kogami knows it’s not really about the city. Or where he lays rest at night. Rather he knows that this is why he keeps having the same dream. It’s simple but it’s clear.

He has no one waiting at “home.”

No unwavering support.

Not a soul in his corner.

The only person who ever fought for him -- his beliefs and his belonging -- was also the very person he betrayed in both word and deed. She would be right to hate him. He almost wants her to hate him.

Smoke swirls from his lips and disperses out the window. Kogami watches it trail away, the wisps catching wind and fading.

The dream doesn’t follow suit.

Akane is far safer at a distance, hating him. At his side, she would surely die. He doesn’t want to carry that weight in his tired arms. To watch a gentle soul become an empty body in just moments.

But even with the dark thought, he smiles. It’s hardly recognizable and it’s tinged with regret, but it’s there.

As long as she’s alive, he’s done at least one thing right.

Even if it means living out a completely different kind of nightmare.

Kagari's kisses were always messy. He kissed like no tomorrow, though maybe in his opinion, there wasn't. Tongue and teeth, kisses interrupted by breathless laughter. He could romanticize this more than anything else in his life. A reckless lover, his kisses mirrored that.

It wasn't that Ginoza didn't like kissing you, it was that the man was rather reserved about it. Like he had a limited amount of kisses. It took a lot of reassurance that that wasn't the case for him to become more free about the kisses he granted you. You quickly found the man loved his kisses. Only in private, of course.

Akane was always in a rush, a busy person through and through. But she always made time to kiss you goodbye or kiss you hello. Like a daily ritual, she couldn't start or finish her day without a kiss from her beloved. Of course, if you were to point that out, her cheeks would quickly flush as she tried to wave it off.

One might accuse Kogami of being a rough kisser. And sometimes they'd be right, okay, most of the time. For Kogami, relationships were dangerous. So he does what he can, opting to pretend that it doesn't mean as much to him as it does. Despite this, the way he grips his lover's face whilst kissing is nothing short of romantic.

You almost expected Makishima's lips to be cold when he kissed you. But they weren't, rather, he was quite warm. Still, his kisses were all devouring. A leading man through and through, his lips against yours was no different a situation.

Hi, do you think Frederica is a potential love interest for Kogami?

Hi Anon, thanks for the ask ❤️ Yes, I do. If Psycho-Pass ever goes that route, I would like to see the potential dynamic between Frederica and Kogami. I shipped these two since the SS Case 3. I felt as though there was a bond, maybe it was the dinner scene or the conversation they had after on the cliff, or maybe it was the infamous water bottle scene, but there is a charm to them as a couple.

I liked how Frederica understood Kogami's emotions and she helped him come to terms with the aimlessness of his journey, where she respected his methods even if they were less than savoury. Then again, she was recruiting a new hound for her team, so she did have ulterior motives but the fact that Frederica learned about Kogami from Saiga makes me extrapolate that she was intrigued about his history personally, so I believe at least from her side she might have some romantic interest. Plus she doesn't hesitate to boss him around when necessary.

Kogami is quite guarded around her even in the novelization and the text makes it quite clear (even Tenzing picks up on it) that Frederica is flirting with him. Kogami is quite clueless as to how to respond to her advances, which to me was hilarious.

Anyhow, we don’t know Kogami’s thoughts about Frederica, whether he sees her in a romantic light, so I’m not going to jump the gun and assume that it will happen.

Also, I am aware that Shinya x Akane and Shinya x Gino are highly popular ships that tick off many of the romantic couple tropes thus they are more likely to become canon than Frederica x Shinya if the writers decide to go ahead with any romantic relationships.

A part of my heart will ship them despite the fact that Frederica x Kogami shippers are a minority 🥰 Not to mention Tenzing secretly ships them.
