Steve is easy to be silent with. At first glance he looks like he should be obnoxiously friendly, but in practice he seems to approach most social interactions as though they’re an inescapable responsibility he doesn’t feel he has a right to complain about.

Welcome to my 2021 favourites. Just a tiny disclaimer: I read over 500 fics in just the last 6 months of 2021 so if your fic isn't included on this list that doesn't mean I didn't like it, choosing just 10 fics was SO hard! But here are 10 of the fics that stayed with me the most and I truly hope everyone has a happy 2022 💕

1. you're not my homeland anymore by emilywithoutY @between-a-ship-and-a-hard-place [Stucky, 65k words, Teen]

"Here's the truth: when you were leaving you kissed me in the kitchen, angry, red-faced, crying. I pushed you away when I wanted to swallow you whole, burn you into my skin, press you into the hollows of my bones, until your cells became a part of me.

Or, it's the age old tale: Two boys grow up together in Brooklyn, inseparable until they are torn apart by death and war. This, our story, starts in 1990. But the truth for some people is that, no matter the universe or timeline, fate has a way of reuniting them with the ghosts of their past.

In a different universe, an older Bucky Barnes intercepts a message that SHIELD (now headed by Alexander Pierce) has located the body of Steve Rogers under the ice in Greenland.

Bucky may be retired but he knows one thing: he can't let them stick Steve's body in a lab.

No matter what it takes, he'll bring Steve home.

9. En Pointe by Oh_i_swear @oh-i-swear-writes [Stucky, 8,2k words, Teen]

Bucky Barnes is an ex-professional ballet dancer now running his own dance school. He's kind, compassionate and clearly cares about the kids in his class and their dreams and goals - most of which involve getting to the stage where they can dance en pointe.

Steve Rogers is a perfectionist and owns En Pointe, the dance wear store nearest to Bucky's dance studio. It's almost light a right of passage when the kids in Bucky's class get to visit the store, not only because they finally get their pointe shoes, but because they get to see the infamous squabbling between Mr Barnes and Mr Rogers who clearly rub each other up the wrong way.... but is everything as it seems?

10. Chef's Kiss by Kalee60 @kalee60 [Stucky, 8,7k words, Teen]

Bucky Barnes was expecting a quiet Christmas. With a cancelled flight home and time off from his demanding job, his most exciting immediate plans involved an eggnog binge with his best friend Darcy.

But when Captain America stumbles into the Stark kitchens, bruised, battered and seemingly in need of company, what can Bucky do but help turn his Christmas around. And in the process, maybe find a little Christmas miracle for himself…

BONUS: I Can't Do Everything (But I'll Do Anything For You) by musette22 @musette22 [Stucky, 24,5k words, Explicit]

Steve Rogers cares about a lot of things, but dating isn’t one of them – much to his fellow Avengers’ bemusement. It’s just never been very high on his list of priorities, falling somewhere behind his work, his friends, his hobbies, and that excellent pepperoni pizza from Vinnie’s on Flatbush Ave.

That is until one night, Natasha drags Steve out to a charity music concert by some hotshot singer that Steve has never actually heard of (which would surprise exactly no one, seeing as Steve is still partial to his records and his radio plays). And as soon as Steve lays eyes on Grammy-award winning musician and international heartthrob James Barnes for the very first time, suddenly he wonders if maybe dating wouldn’t be so bad after all. Dating James Barnes, specifically, that is. The question is just: how does one go about that? Especially one like Steve, who’s never wooed anybody in his century-long life, let alone a man. Let alone a man with long, dark hair, tattoos all over his arms, and a fanbase that rivals Steve’s own.

It’s not like he can just go up to him and say something like, "You and me babe, how about it?"

a handful of dust -- 1/3

SUMMARY: Steve looks for Bucky for a long time.

But the thing is that Bucky doesn't get found, Bucky finds, and then things Happen.

This takes a hard left after the Potomac and stumbles through the dark a lot after.

Take a bit of running, the occasional synaptic misfire, the resurfacing of old memories, a dash or two of PTSD, and (eventually) a nice dose of action, stir, and serve over some unresolved issues.

A/N: This is my first foray into Stucky, and no, it's not nervewracking at all, WHY DO YOU ASK.

PART I

All he ever does is look.

Every waking moment, and sometimes in his sleep. He roams empty streets and buildings in his dreams, he looks through pixelated footage during the day, and sometimes he just runs, runs as if pure speed and effort will be rewarded.

They are not.

Days turn to weeks turn to months and the Winter Soldier has gone to ground, has disappeared like the ghost it has been for decades and lifetimes, and so all he can do, the only thing he can do, is look.

So he does.

There is an astonishing amount of visual information. Tony puts him in a room with no less than nine screens and makes a few phone calls, gets access to feeds from several letter agencies and at least one police department. It is absolutely terrifying to see how much of people’s lives is recorded. In detail. He feels like an exposed nerve, looking through what Tony calls petabytes of optics, not that any part of that sentence makes sense.

His life is centered around a moment. One small moment, and a raised fist.

He dreams of falling. He dreams of drowning.

He dreams of torn metal and wind.

Twice he tries to give his shield to Sam, Sam who just looks at him with eyes full of understanding and says, “No, Cap.”

But every time he wants to leave, wants to slink out of Stark Tower and disappear into a nameless ocean of anonymous faces and never come back up for air, he closes his eyes and thinks back to lying on that steel plate a thousand feet up in the air, of that blink of understanding, Bucky’s eyes out of the face of the Winter Soldier, and he pulls himself together and keeps searching for another day.

Somewhere out there is James Buchanan Barnes, and Steve will not let him down.

It goes to the museum every day. Looks at the man wearing its face and laughing, burned into seventy-year-old silver molecules. Tries to remember what it was laughing at.

Tries to remember laughing.

And then looks at the man next to it, his face open and carefree, and even past the grime of aged film stock it knows the man’s eyes are blue. Knows his hair is blond, even reflected in black and white.

It knows.

The blue eyes are fond as he looks at the man, the man wearing its face, the man who was. They stand close together, like they’re part of a whole.

It doesn’t know who it is.

But it knows who it wants to become.

😍 From This Day On (BrighteyedJill, hobbitdragon) - 43K, The Witcher: Eskel/Geralt - lots of good, chewy emotions - I think most of the Witcher fics I have read are more on the tv show side of Geralt so this was a different characterization (to me) since I don’t consume any of the source materials. I quite liked it.

Folie à quatre (Ark) - Les Mis: Enjoltaire & MCU: Stucky, 3K - a lovely little fic that points up the similarities in these pairings. My fave line: “[Grantaire] winks at Bucky. Then he gets up to shake Steve Rogers’ hand, which is an experience. Steve has an iron grip and a dazzling smile, and the sort of blue, blue eyes that say trust me, I’m here to save your life. It’s hard not to fall right into those fathomless depths. Grantaire feels great sympathy for Bucky Barnes. He only has to handle Enjolras and his gaze that reads trust me, I’m here to blow everything up.” 😂😂😂

Favourite Stucky Fics of 2022

This feels a little bit like a farewell, but don’t worry... I’m never too far away! Here’s my favourite Stucky fics of 2022 :)

It’s like nailing down a muse-- beautiful and fleeting and so hard to find.

When Bucky Barnes meets his model for the day, things go from good to great.
