Fic Update: The Wolf III [21/21]

Summary: Months after their return to New Orleans, Klaus and Caroline try to settle into a semblance of normalcy, while Elijah struggles to forgive his brother's sins. But a mysterious prophecy that foretells the downfall of the Mikaelson family brings them all together in a war that will reopen ancient wounds and see each of the siblings doomed: one by friend, one by foe and one by family.

[It's The Originals Season 3, but Caroline had Klaus' baby, now she's a vampire and they are back in New Orleans after a stint in Mystic Falls. It's mostly about Klaroline, obviously.]

S03E21 The Bloody Crown Caroline wakes up from something that doesn't really feel like sleep. It’s as though her brain disconnected and went into a blackout state for a few hours. She doesn't feel well rested, not even close, but there's a soft tingle chasing across her skin that is oddly soothing.

She blinks out the drowsiness and follows the sensation, finds Klaus tracing the arm she has draped across his middle. It's a feathery brush, an absent-minded movement he probably doesn't even notice he's doing, but it still has the power to awaken butterflies in Caroline's stomach. Even after years, she feels it every time he touches her. Fire at the tips of his fingers.

He's facing away from her, staring at the sliver of daylight trickling in through the curtains, his usual dark and devious look replaced by something weary and distant. Caroline watches him for a long time, trying to peer through the mask of impassiveness, past the glacial ice in his eyes. She hates it when he's like this, lost in the corners of his own mind where she can't follow. With Klaus, that always spells trouble. The anger she knows how to deal with. The barks and snarls she can handle. It's the blank stares, the emptiness and the silence that scares her the most.

Peak Klaroline Moments™ in the Krossover

[Caption: several gifs from The Vampire Diaries and The Originals focused on Caroline and Klaus’ dynamic during the crossover episodes set in New Orleans. First, in a flashforward, Caroline appears in New Orleans demanding to see Klaus, saying she knows he comes to that bar and confidently stating that he’ll know her. In the present, Klaus asks Stefan how Caroline is, smiling, making Stefan look uncomfortable. Later, Klaus expresses scepticism to the idea that Caroline would carry and give birth to her twins and then distance herself, sarcasticallysaying “that does sound like the Caroline I remember”. After kicking out Stefan he ends up picking up his phone when Caroline calls, greeting him with a “Hello, luv.” and a small smile.

She asks who’s talking, with trepidation; he says, with mock affectation “Ouch. Has it really being that long?” and her face is frozen when she says her name out loud, after getting confirmation it’s him. During their conversation Klaus goes on a tangent, asking what does she think of hand-me-downs since her daughter’s “outgrown onesies” are a waste of a chest he had that used to belong to Louis XV. Later he promises her to ensure Stefan will be fine, reassuring her. He also repeats her words from his last visit to Mystic Falls (“here you are, in college, building a life for yourself. Plans, a future, things you want.”), making her smile as she says “Klaus, I’m not doing this with you.“ In a charged moment, he tells her “It’s not a crime to love what you cannot explain, making her look down at one of her babies; he also tells her that he was sorry to hear about her mother’s death, and that he’s sure she would’ve liked to see Caroline with the kids.

Driving, in a car ride with Stefan he asks Stefan if he loves “her”, clarifying who he means when Stefan turns his head quickly; Stefan asks if he still has feelings for Caroline, and Klaus deflects, saying he has too many complicated women in his life. When he fins out Stefan is being chased by the Huntress for protecting Damon, Klaus tells him to let Caroline go, or “spend an eternity sacrificing everything good [he has] with her for [his] brother.” Later on Stefan is hidden in a trunk with Hayley; she asks to see his homepage, which shows Caroline; Hayley mentions that Klaus “had a thing for her” and Stefan replies “Yep.” Finally, at the end of the episode, Stefan tells Klaus that he loves Caroline, that he knows Klaus did once too, and promises to do right by her. Klaus, affected, thanks him.]

WIP Wednesday

Part of the weekly klaroline posting, and also tagged by @carry-the-sky and @ninzied who write for different fandoms but continue to blow my mind with their work.

This is A Dream, Resurrected continued. Posting unedited just to feel like i am progressing, even if it's a fic not many people will dig.This is set in the park with the simulated falls, and features Caroline and Klaus on a picnic blanket together, because of reasons.

His eyes flickered to the Falls then, voice strangely soft as he responded. “Dream was Rebekah’s idea.”

“That snooty bitch on the ‘feed?”

Klaus laughed, sitting up and circling his arms over his knees. It made him seem like a kid. Vulnerable. The danger signs flashed in her head. He nodded to her, catching her eye with a look she found to be far too searching for comfort.

“Bekah wanted a normal life. This was as close as she could envision. A moment to return to normalcy. To before. But they’ve never really been enough, have they, Caroline?”

She could almost picture the jaws closing shut, and she blinked. “Me? I’ve never really played around with Dream, like I said.”

He had the audacity to roll his eyes. “Can we stop with the charade? He turned towards her and any ideas of vulnerability were wiped clean by the almost manic expression on his face. “What is it? What do you do to make them so real?”

“I--, I’m just a dream tech, Klaus.”

“And I’m tired of you lying to me.” His eyes locked with hers and it felt like she was fighting a war.

She broke their eye contact, as if it were a simple thing, and stood up, brushing her palms on her thighs to keep from shaking. “And I’m tired of being bullied for a reason you won’t come out and say, so I think we’re done here.”

“I don’t like to be played with, Caroline.”

“Neither do I? Look, I met you a few days ago and so far my experience is veiled threats and vague questions. Excuse me for not jumping to do your bidding. I guess you’re used to that, being a Mikaelson.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” His jaw was set, all traces of dimples long gone. She found herself missing them.

“What do you think it means? Your family owns the most valuable commodity in the world. You could buy anything you want, ask anyone to do what you want. That’s not how the world works for most people. We’re just here, trying to make a living, trying to understand what the hell our ancestors were thinking when they burned out the sun, trying to just,” she threw up her hands, “struggle to be happy. Just…”

She couldn’t let the opportunity go, even as she aggressively folded the blanket in her frustration, and the words came out softer than she intended, more pleading than she wished. “You were there. Before. You have to know.”

Fic Update: The Wolf III [19/21]

[It's The Originals Season 3, but Caroline had Klaus' baby, now she's a vampire and they are back in New Orleans after a stint in Mystic Falls. It's mostly about Klaroline, obviously.]

-- S03E19 Where Nothing Stays Buried ✨

In his 200 odd years on this Earth, most of which were spent soaked deep within the supernatural cauldron of New Orleans, Marcel Gerard can safely say he has seen everything.

He has witnessed magic in all of its glorious, beautiful, vicious, terrifying forms. He has seen myths rise and fall across the streets of the Crescent City. He has seen miracles, and he has seen curses. There are no mysteries in the unnatural world that can still surprise Marcel. Or that's what he thought. Because in all his years, he had never felt the French Quarter tremble. Not like that.

Sturdy, robust buildings that have withstood fires, floods and the test of magic and time start to shake as if they are made of twigs and straw. A cacophony of screams sounds like a roar as people swarm the streets in a mad rush, running from the unsteady constructions. No one seems to know exactly where to run to. Everything is shaking. It's like the city is suddenly at the epicenter of a seismic shift. Nowhere feels safe.

For a spine-chilling moment, with glass shattering all around, old wood screeching as it is dangerously pressured and bent by the quake, dust raining down upon his head, Marcel thinks - this is it. Judgement Day has come to settle scores with New Orleans. All those centuries of housing bloodsucking beasts and monsters of all species have finally caught up with the city, and they will all pay the price.

But the odd thing is... He can feel the quake, and yet it doesn't seem like it's coming from underneath him. It's not the earth that's shaking. More like shock waves, traveling through the air, reverberating like sound.

That's when it hits him. He doesn't need his witches to tell him there's nothing natural about that earthquake. He knows magic when he sees it; he knows it even better when he feels it. And a surge of power strong enough to shake New Orleans on its foundations can only have come from one source.

The goddamn Ancestors.

Whatever those assholes are up to, it's big and it's most certainly bad. And he has a feeling he knows exactly where he'll find the answer.
