So "Doctor Faustus" already being out by the time Dream came by in 1589, is...uh, possibly a bit fudged for the sake of the story in Sandman, but I'm thinking about Hob canonically calling bisexual legend Kit Marlowe a great playwright, and the fact that Doctor Faustus is literally about a handsome demon seducing a more or less normal guy into selling his soul in exchange for an extraordinary life, including temporary immortality during the agreed 24-year span (including a scene where Faustus survives a murder attempt and holds his own severed head in a scene that I'm sure made Hob fuckin' blanche wondering if his secret had gotten out).

And I'm also thinking about how there's a strong running theme in "Faustus" of Mephistophilis steering Faust away from getting married. There is no Marguerite (Faust's wife in other versions) in Marlowe's version of the story which is really interesting. Especially because there's a rather strong whiff of jealousy (especially with Arthur Darvill's performance) around Mephistophilis urging Faust away from marriage, saying he'll bring him fine courtesans, or even (eventually) Helen of Troy instead, but definitely don't get married.

And I'm also thinking about my (and others') emerging fanon that Hob had his own written-or-unwritten fanfic of Faust x Mephistophilis that was heavily based on his own fantasies around his dark and mysterious stranger who gave him immortality. ("This could be us, but you keep fuckin' leaving after 5 minutes...") and a thought occurred to me.

So it's really weird that Hob just happens to get married within a few years, at most, of his 1589 meeting with Dream.

Now, my main assumption around this, Watsonian/in-universe, is that Hob wanted to demonstrate success to his stranger. So within a few years of the 1589 meeting, he looked at the date and went, "Oh shit, if I really wanted to show off I should get married and have an heir on the way, that's the true mark of success in my era!" (Which, of course, Dream is spectacularly unimpressed by and/or projecting his own miseries onto Hob's inevitable despair once they die.)

But now I'm thinking about "Doctor Faustus" and also kind of wondering... timeline fudging aside where he could have conceivably seen the play (or some early version of it while Marlowe was writing it) and if that could lend to a slightly alternative reading of why Hob was in a rush to get married before his meeting with his stranger?

Either:

My tall dark and possibly-not-the-Devil-then-again- the Devil-could-just-LIE stranger is coming. Faustus in "Doctor Faustus" passed up on a chance to possibly have his soul saved by not being married. So it might be a good idea to be married just in case, y'know, for the sake of my soul and so I'm not tempted by being single.

(The more Dreamling-shippy one) My tall dark and handsome stranger can't possibly be interested in me. In fact, it's kind of pining and pathetic to still be nominally single when he comes by, especially after 200 years. Talk about desperate. Maybe it's better if I'm married, that way I don't look desperate and it's not like he'd ever be interested, right? But if he does seem annoyed that I'm married, I will have definitely learned something.

Only for Dream to peace out of there almost immediately upon meeting happily-married-Hob.

Now, do I think canonically that Hob was sort of testing the waters by getting married? Not especially cuz it's an ass-backwards way to go about it, if it was a consideration at all, I'd see it as more hedging to the tune of not looking desperate, rather than trying to make Dream jealous or anything.

But I would bet (or at least put in a fanfic) that Hob added the fact that Dream did not seem especially enthused about his marriage into his little mental list of "Maybe? But surely not. But maybe?" as it emerged around, say, 1789 along with all the other later evidence of possible interest.

1. cybersix/adrian seidleman — aka my first impression of gender fluidity. this show came out when i was 4 and to this day i still mourn that it wasn’t longer. it was so insanely influential for its time in terms of gender rep (the main character’s disguise was a male school teacher who pretty much everyone had a crush on) and i remember genuinely crying to my mom when this show stopped airing at its regular time slot.

2. eris — at the ripe age of 8 this woman was my bisexual awakening. and honestly, more than likely the introduction to my obsession with villains. to this day i would literally let this woman do whatever she wanted to me.

3. loki laufeyson — the man, the myth, the legend. truly the one that started it all. the og summer blorbo. i’ve literally been obsessed with this man since i was a kid reading my uncle’s comic book collection past bedtime. so many iterations have come and gone (some better than others) but regardless this mother fucker has rotted my brain.

4. dr. spencer reid — probably the most influential character in regards to my writing. he was the first character that i wrote an entire fic about (along with an even longer sequel) which really helped me develop as a writer. also, now that i’m older i realize his neurodivergent rep was very affirming to witness!

5. fleabag — god, i could go on and on about how this character and phoebe’s writing makes me feel for a century so i’ll just say no other character has made me feel the way this one does.

6. silco — he’s everything i love in a character. from his overall design to his motivations and traits, silco is perfect and i thank arcane every day for creating him.

7. nick miller — watching this character is like looking in a mirror and i hate it. everything he does or says is so ridiculously specific to my psyche that i sometimes have to cover my face out of sheer secondhand embarrassment. i love him dearly.

8. ash — this is baby. my darling. my sweet cheese. despite her kit in game being very mid i will never main another character simply because she is the moment! her backstory is compelling. her and horizon’s relationship prior to the games is so interesting that i think about writing a 33737 page fic of it every day. i just love her and her broken little simulacrum brain.

9. mizu — she is everything i want in strong, female character. blood thirsty motivations that lead to unwavering goals, complicated relationships, the external hotness of a thousand suns. mizu is incredible and i am so happy that blue eye samurai got picked up for season two!!

10. astarion — wow, what a surprise! the vampire is here! who would’ve guessed? seriously though, i know i post about him pretty much every day and make jokes about how hot he is and blah, blah, blah but he truly means so much to me. all of the writers involved in creating him (and neil obvs) did such an incredible and sincere job. you can tell they put so much care into crafting his (and so many other characters’) story and i’ll forever be thankful.

Story:

Antpaw didn’t trust StarClan, and in the zealotry of PartridgeClan, that was a death sentence.

So he snuck away, hiding near the border of WhistleClan, despite the horrific stories, begging to join. Plumetimber vouched for him, and begrudgingly, Sapstar let him join.

That night, Nightspots confirmed some of the stories were true. And a black and white rabbit sat next to him in camp, pointing a single paw at Crestfrost.

Rabbithollow found him burying Crestfrost, and to his surprise, winked and left.

That’s when it started.

He met Stormwatcher, an exile from JuncoClan, and they fell in love. Antwave soon was expecting their kits.

Going throughout life was tough, vigil after vigil as one after another his beloved parents died. Even though Plumetimber and Fuzzytumble were the ones who felt like true parents, Rabbithollow was still his partner in crime.

His grief was strong. But ridding the Clan of the horrors softened the blow.

Hiddenstrike eventually gave him a piece of prey. Dizzy from heat stroke, he ate it.

The deathberries killed him quickly.

I won’t lie to you, I actually found episode 6 really boring, 7 was less boring and 8 was maybe a little bit funny and I lowkey enjoyed it so much. Brief Introduction

Sally Mounter, The Little Sparrow is a female human from Demacia

She is a young bard, travelling from city to city and singing the excellent songs she makes up herself

She is also a mage, trying to learn more about her powers without being discovered, and being a secret helper of the mage rebellion

Residence: constantly travelling, mostly in Demacia

Some Facts

Sally travels on her trusty mount, a crimson rider’s raptor that she and her brothers jokingly named Fred back when they were just little children. The name stuck of course, even though Fred grew into a majestic female.

Her parents know she’s a mage, but she only suspects they do. No member of her family knows she’s helping the rebellion though.

Her father sometimes jokingly calls her Silly

She is one of 13 children. Many of her siblings were adopted from the local orphanage, but it doesn’t really matter to them, everyone starts equal in the Mounter family

Yes, the family name came from a long lineage of dealing with various mounts, mostly horses and rider’s raptors

She usually manages to establish contact with the local rebels and she sometimes steals supplies and scrolls for them or helps them with information she overheard. Sometimes she even participates in their missions or enters their camp. To them, she keeps her name The Sparrow.

She travels with her small guitar, a flute and a violin, but she had learned a couple other instruments over her travels

Her songs are inspired by her own travels, her strange adventures, by the people she meets and the legends and stories she hears about. Sometimes she bands together with other musicians to make better performances.

Perfect examples for the songs she performs: - Lorelei, inspired by unforeseen adventures of getting captured by a pirate ship named Lorelei, captained by a charming woman also named Lorelei who fell in love with Sally at first sight - Home Again, sang when she first traveled back to her hometown - Hanging Tree, about a great ancient tree she once came across, inspired after an old lady told her what it was like back in her early childhood - Mid Winter’s Night, inspired by not being able sleep on a random winter night, she came up with this song and then she could finally fall asleep

Unknown Magic

The only things Sally knows about her own powers are from personal experience: It looks blue, it can demolish things, it can move things and it can do seemingly random weird stuff, such as spontaneous combustion in and around her arm without dealing actually real damage. She’s not entirely the master of these powers, nor does she know their true potential.

Her burn marks were left by a wild burst of magic while practicing, at a closer inspection they look a bit strange, the magic didn’t actually do any long term harm

She tries to practice in the wilds, hoping no one sees her there

Unless in a rebel camp, she practices in clothes that leave only her eyes exposed. Yes, even in the scorching summer.

Once she summoned a lightning strike on accident and split a tree open

Once she had a random magic outburst that made half the kitchen’s tools float, it gave her and one of her brothers half a heart attack each and took them some time to fix, this time was bought by her father who saw city guards walking towards his home and ran up to them, telling them he spotted a dangerous mage in the woods and lead them on a wild goose chase
