Sawyer: What happened at the wedding... it was a total disaster. The lies, the sneaking around, all of it. It's not okay. Brick and I are through. He hurt me for the last time, and what he did was unforgivable. But I want you to know, I don't blame you for any of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rosie: [Enthusiastic babbling] Donna: I'm so sorry again, Sawyer. For everything. We should have been honest with you from the beginning, honey. This has to be so confusing for you. Sawyer: No, I understand. Brick would have exploded either way. Better at home than during the wedding. But never mind him, how about we read a story, huh? It's one of your brothers' favorites!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kirsten: Well.. They seem to be getting along pretty well at least. Doesn't hurt that the little thing is as cute as can be. Donna: [Frowns] Yes, I just wish Brick was here to see it. Kirsten: Oh sweetheart, I know you do. But you know I used my fancy-pants crystal ball to check on him, and I can assure you he's fine. I don't know where he's at, but he's alive and well. He'll come around when he's ready.
Donna: I suppose you're right. I just hope it's sooner rather than later. He needs his family! I just hope he has somebody to keep him company.

Wedding Date Pt. 5 - Tyler Seguin
Type: strangers-enemies-lovers, series
Requested: no
Warnings: swearing, mentions of emotional manipulation and shitty exes
A/N: Sorry about forgetting to post last week! Here’s part 5, and there should be two more parts after this one.
Tyler was already at the Benn house when Melissa arrived the next afternoon. Jordie had promised he would be, and it appeared the middle Benn kept his promises. Tyler was actually the one who met Melissa at the door, and his jaw clenching gave away that he was still mad. For just a second, she wondered if he would shut the front door in his face. The baby on his hip seemed like the only reason that he didn’t. Billie reached out for Melissa as soon as Tyler opened the door, and just like that she was in. Melissa made a note to get Billie a book or something as a thank you, even if the kid wouldn’t understand what it was for.
He stepped back as soon as Melissa crossed the threshold and began walking away. Melissa followed him down the hallway towards the kitchen much like she’d followed Jordie the day before. “So am I never going to be able to visit Jordie without you being here now?” Melissa glared at Tyler as he walked in front of her, though it was mostly as she tried not to look at his ass. It was hard, especially considering how tight his board shorts were.
Jordie frowned at Tyler as the two of them and Billie appeared in the kitchen. He’d more than likely heard what Tyler said to her. “Hey, Lissa,” Jordie said, “how’s it going?” His face changed when he looked at her, and the brotherly smile he flashed at her was incredibly reassuring.
The baby sitting on Melissa’s hip started babbling and clutching at her hair before she could respond. Clearly, she hadn’t been paying Billie enough attention. “Yeah, babe, I see you. You wanna tell me all about your day?” Billie continued to babble at her animatedly, and Melissa tried to ignore Tyler’s quiet huff as he stalked out of the kitchen and into the backyard. She stared after him as he began to help Jessie set up some lights around the deck. He hip-checked her out of the way, and Melissa’s heart tugged at the laughter that filtered in through the open door.
“You’re really good with her.” Melissa turned her attention to Jordie. He leaned back against the counter and jerked his chin at Billie. “You look like you’ve done this before.”
Melissa smiled and squeezed Billie gently. “My younger sister has two. She married her high school sweetheart right out of college, and they had their first kid right after she turned 23.” She bounced Billie until she started to belly laugh. “I’m the cool aunt.” Jordie laughed, and Melissa chuckled along with him. Sarah’s boys were the toughest part of moving out of the DC area. She had been the go-to babysitter from the time the oldest was born, and now she’d be lucky to see them a few times a year.
She looked out at the deck again, and Jordie gestured for her to make her way outside. Jessie gave Melissa a hug when she saw her, and Billie started reaching for her mom. Tyler looked like he was doing his best impression of a statue until Jordie punched him on the shoulder and ordered him into the yard to haul chairs in front of the firepit.
It seemed like Jordie and Jessie were doing their best to keep Melissa and Tyler separate during the entirety of setup, though they were making Melissa do things that involved her being in front of Tyler. If she had to wager a guess, Melissa would say they were trying to get him used to having her in his presence before they talked.
The party was well underway by the time Melissa finally caught Tyler alone. He was inside making himself a mixed drink when she went for another beer. Much like he had done all night when she tried to get him alone, Tyler immediately made a beeline for the back door.
“Tyler.” He kept walking, and Melissa hurried after him. “Tyler please just listen for a second.” He stopped, mercifully, and she hurried to catch up to him. “I’m sorry for almost all of the things you mentioned yesterday.” His body was stiff, shoulders tight and angry as she stepped around to look in his face. “I’m not sorry that I hooked up with you though. It’s the stuff afterwards that was the issue. I didn’t plan on sleeping with you, just sex, and when I woke up and felt comfortable I panicked.” It had taken Melissa until she saw Tyler again to realize it, too. She could easily imagine waking up next to him all the time, and it felt wrong to be that comfortable with someone she’d just met. Especially someone she imagined didn’t do relationships.
It felt like progress when she grabbed his hand and he didn’t pull it away. “I really really like you, Tyler, and it scared the shit out of me. I’ve never been the type of person to make friends easily, and I’ve sure as hell never been the type of person to fall for someone I’d just met, and both of those things happened with you.” Melissa squeezed Tyler’s fingers in an attempt to really make him understand. Brown eyes met hers, and they weren’t as angry anymore. He still looked hurt, but he wasn’t really angry.
Someone shouted for Tyler, and he jerked his hands back. “I’ll talk to you later.” His shoulders lowered slightly as he walked away, though his steps were still short. Melissa bit her lip. She had no right to expect him to forgive her easily. Ghosting him had been pretty shitty, and appearing in his friend’s backyard had been even shittier.
In an effort to save her heart from another rejection from Tyler, Melissa found Jessie and did her best to pretend he didn’t exist. Jessie seemed more than happy to be a distraction, shoving cookie dough and a scoop into her hands and instructing her to fill the cookie sheets. Jessie stood on the other side of the kitchen island scooping out of her own giant batch of cookie dough, and Billie stared at them from her seat in her high chair. Melissa made faces at the baby every few minutes, and at one point threw some cookie dough in Jessie’s direction. Billie screeched in excitement, and the pair of women laughed as they continued to do everything they could to make Billie laugh.
Later, Melissa was sitting by herself near the fire when a large body dropped into the chair beside her. “Why did you ghost me?” Tyler stared out into the fire when he spoke, and he wouldn’t meet Melissa’s eyes when she turned her head in his direction. “I thought we at least had enough of a connection to be friends.”
Rather than anger, Tyler looked hurt. She hadn’t even considered that he would be upset about losing a potential friend. Honestly, she’d assumed it was embarrassment over being rejected that was bugging him more than anything else. “I panicked.” Tyler scoffed, and she placed a hand on his thigh so he didn’t try to get up. “Kirsten convinced me that a hookup would be good for me, and I agreed. I thought we could hookup, maybe more than once, and be friends.” Melissa squeezed Tyler’s leg to get his attention, waiting until he looked into her eyes before he continued. “I woke up the morning after the wedding and realized that I liked you way too much for this to be a casual hookup. My last relationship ended really badly, kinda messed me up, and I told you about that, which is crazy. Nobody except Kirsten knew that whole story.”
Tyler was melting, she could see it in his eyes. Somehow, Melissa was lucky enough that he understood. He leaned into Melissa’s space as he spoke again. “We didn’t have to be a hookup. Maybe I would have been interested in a relationship, especially if I knew you were here in Dallas.”
He met Melissa’s eyes with a fiery intensity. She found herself getting lost in them again, just like she had the morning after the wedding. “I don’t know if I can handle another relationship right now. Liam messed with my head pretty badly, stuff I didn’t realize he was doing until we were over.” She looked down at her lap because meeting Tyler’s eyes was out of the question. It was hard for her to admit, but it was the truth. Liam was a master emotional manipulator, good enough that she didn’t realize he was doing it. Looking at language in emotional manipulation was one of her damn areas of research, for fucks sake, and she still hadn’t figured it out until after.
The fire crackled a few feet away. A large hand snaked into Melissa’s lap to cover her hands, and another hand pushed her hair out of her face and gently tilted her head up. Tyler’s eyes, so incredibly expressive, had changed yet again. There was none of the sympathy she’d expected. Just sheer determination that took her breath away. “Let me try.” Melissa opened her mouth to speak, but Tyler shook his head. “Let me chase you. I’ll gain your trust. Be my date to events. Let me show you how incredible you are, and when you feel comfortable moving us forward you tell me. Okay?” Tyler gently rubbed his thumb along her cheekbone, and Melissa sank into the touch. This was what she missed about being in a relationship. She craved physical intimacy.
“Okay.” Melissa whispered the words, and could hardly believe they were coming out of her mouth.
“Okay?” She nodded at Tyler’s repetition, and he grinned cheekily at her. “We’ll start Saturday. There’s a donor event before the draft, and I need a date. We had a bit of fun the last time we went to an event together, yeah?” Tyler winked, and Melissa couldn’t help but laugh.
Tyler’s face turned serious again as he searched her face. “Are you sure about this? I don’t want to make you uncomfortable, baby, and I damn sure don’t want you to run away again.” Melissa’s heart tugged. She would never stop feeling bad for that, no matter the reason why she’d done it.
She nodded. Tyler kissed her forehead gently, and she leaned into his touch. “I’m gonna make this worth your while, I promise.” Despite herself and lingering reservations, Melissa believed him.

How Psych Evolved Through the Character of Carlton Lassiter
https://ift.tt/2ZONt8A
Early on in the Psych pilot, Shawn Spencer’s (James Roday Rodriguez) ludicrous plot to impersonate a psychic in order to solve crime suddenly takes on grave stakes: Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson) informs him that if he’s lying, he’ll be prosecuted for hindering a police investigation. Just like that, he’s locked into his lie, and has no choice but to let it snowball—into a private eye business with his best friend Burton Guster (Dulé Hill), but also into a lucrative consultancy gig for the Santa Barbara Police Department that, psychic antics be damned, legitimately saves lives.
But while it’s the Chief who put the fear of God into Shawn, the true threat to his secret was always one Carlton Jebediah Lassiter (Timothy Omundson). In the early seasons, Lassiter was the perfect foil: a by-the-book detective obsessed with proper procedure and with hypermasculinity, who had patience for neither Gus’ high-pitched squeals nor Shawn’s supernatural “hunches.” The fake psychic’s obnoxious theatrics were nothing without an exasperated reaction from Carlton… especially as those hunches kept paying off and making this old dog all the more self-conscious about his own inability to learn new tricks.
Even moreso than their eventual tango duet in Psych: The Musical, Shawn and Lassie’s song has always been the Psych theme:
I know, you know, that I’m not telling the truth
I know, you know, they just don’t have any proof
Embrace the deception, learn how to bend
Your worst inhibitions tend to psych you out in the end
Yet even as Lassiter delighted in watching Shawn get shown up by other fake psychics and even threatened to be the one to someday catch him in the act, over the course of the series this seeming antagonist shifted into a comic relief role and eventually a truly sympathetic figure. As Carlton became Lassie, so too did Psych grow beyond its cheeky premise, from a potentially one-note episodic show to a serialized dramedy about a found family solving crimes in all manner of unconventional ways—a connection that was cemented in Psych: The Movie and now in Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.
It started with Shawn noticing that Lassie needed help, even if he would never say so outright—when he encountered the detective, drunk and loose-lipped and off his game, in “From the Earth to Starbucks.” Not only was he confounded by Shawn’s skills, Lassiter confessed, but it made him feel worse about the fact that he couldn’t solve what he believed was the murder of a local astronomer who seemingly died of natural causes. Shawn, Gus, and Juliet (Maggie Lawson) spent the rest of that episode surreptitiously helping Lassiter solve what was indeed a murder, all while throwing him clues without him realizing. There was a noticeable absence of Shawn’s psychic shtick in that season 1 episode, since the point was to give Lassiter all the credit, which meant making it look like Lassiter’s way of working. Shawn didn’t have to perform, aside from moments of conspiring with Jules, because it was very much a case of What Would Lassie Do?

Psych 2: Lassie Come Home Review
By Natalie Zutter
By the time “Lassie Did a Bad, Bad Thing” in season 3 and was the prime suspect in a criminal’s death, he knew he had no choice but to bring Psych in where the SBPD wouldn’t investigate. And in the case of “Last Night Gus” in season 6—well, it was in everyone’s best interests to solve the mystery of that Hangover-esque night. Over the years, viewers discovered along with Shawn, Gus, and Jules various Lassie quirks: He works out his daddy issues by dressing up as his Civil War ancestor and an archetypal cowboy. He enjoys tap dancing with Gus because it helps him sort through his thoughts. He falls in love with Marlowe (Kristy Swanson) despite her criminal record. He shares more and more of himself with these colleagues who become friends and then family. In turn, he comes to, if not actually believe in, then at least accept the idiosyncrasies of Psych—because like it or not, it makes his professional and personal lives better. At the same time, Shawn’s lie quietly explodes his relationship with Juliet, as it makes her doubt that he was telling her the truth about anything. Even after they reconcile, the ramifications of almost losing her cause Shawn to pull back from automatically playing the psychic card.
And then Lassiter winds up shot and recovering in a hospital bed, helpless in the most Hitchcockian fashion at the start of Psych 2, and there’s no question about who he’ll call.
Clearly creator Steve Franks and the other writers made the decision that if they were to have Lassiter as a presence in Psych’s present, they had no choice but to draw from Omundson’s personal experience recovering from a debilitating stroke. Yet it’s eerie how well this dramatic arc fits Lassiter’s character—Lassie, who may have become a big teddy bear by the end of the series, but who is still obsessed with (heterosexual, able-bodied) notions of supposed manliness. Carlton “Danger” Lassiter, who once said he would go out “in a hailstorm of bullets” if it meant catching a criminal. Now he has to face the knowledge that he may never walk again.
Interestingly, Juliet is not the one whose help Lassiter specifically requests, despite their history as partners. In fact, it’s likely their shared experience that makes him reluctant to put her in that position; if there’s someone that Carlton would be afraid to be exposed in front of, it’s his former mentee. How can he reconcile asking the one-time junior detective whom he showed the ropes to adapt to a situation where he’s still getting his bearings? To wit, he puts her off with a to-do list of errands—a throwback to their early days together, when he frequently invited her to “shut it” or otherwise stay in her lane.
Thankfully, one of the many lessons Juliet took from their time together in the field was to not obey orders when she knows she’s on to something. And so she returns to the scene of the crime where Lassiter was shot, follows up on ballistics, and locates the missing puzzle piece of the second bullet. Shawn and Gus get the ghosts, but Jules gets the shooter. Between being confined to his hospital room, and in the face of Jules’ own stubborn tenacity, Lassiter couldn’t have stopped her if he tried. In many ways, accepting help not asked for demands even more vulnerability from him.
What’s most fascinating about Shawn and Gus’ investigation in Lassie Come Home is that not for a moment do they bullshit Lassiter. This isn’t a case for Psych, it’s an act of love from two close friends—absolutely no psychic spectacle necessary. Now, one could argue that Shawn wouldn’t have even thought to make up a vision because, as far as he knows, Lassiter watched his goodbye video (in the series finale) all the way to the end, where he confessed the truth behind how he manages to solve so many crimes.
Instead, right before Shawn could give Lassiter the answer he’d dreamed of hearing for eight seasons, the detective popped out the DVD and broke it in half. At the time, this moment in the Psych canon, arguably more than his relationship with Marlowe or his identity as a father, was when Lassiter experienced his greatest character growth: He would rather pause time, to focus on all the good that Shawn had accomplished through his lie, than be right.
But time can’t stay paused forever; and if Lassiter is being clear-eyed about how Shawn solves his baffling hospital sightings in Lassie Come Home, then he also has no illusions about his inability to solve his own mystery alone. He can contribute his observations—credible and not—and draw his own conclusions, but he has to trust Shawn, Gus, and Juliet to be his eyes, ears, and legs outside of the prison of his room. He also has to accept that he’s not always present in the crime-solving; there’s a recurring theme in which Lassiter, drifting on his meds, opens his eyes to Shawn and Gus, or Juliet, waiting expectantly for him to wake up and catch up. In one scene where Shawn goes to ask his advice about fatherhood, Lassie is completely asleep, an incredible display of vulnerability from both Lassiter and Omundson.
Yet as we learn in his final showdown with the murderous nurse Dolores (Sarah Chalke), just because Lassiter closes his eyes doesn’t mean he’s out for the count. The way he outwits her is Lassiter to a tee: Even while slipping away from the fatal morphine drip, he has enough wherewithal to grab one of three (three!) guns he had stashed in his hospital room—just like in “Lassie Did a Bad, Bad Thing.”
But this time, instead of being all cool and flipping the bullet into his hand, this Lassiter is babbling to the morphine-induced hallucination of his dead father (Joel McHale) about how much it hurt to lose him, about how he’s afraid he’ll leave his daughter to grow up without a father just like he did.
The moment is played for laughs, with Dolores’ face screwing up into incredulity—this guy has a gun pulled on her, and he’s still mumbling closure to his ghost dad? But for fans, it’s tantamount to the DVD moment: Lassiter has finally found the way to be unguarded, to embrace the ridiculousness of the present moment without self-consciousness, without losing sight of the perp. Even though he has the upper hand, he’s still scared about what he’s going to do when he gets out of this room. He can put away a killer, but he can’t predict his own future beyond the hospital.
Which makes his reunion with Marlowe—witnessed only by Jules and Henry (Corbin Bernsen)—all the more moving. Another character in another narrative wouldn’t have cared if he returned to his wife in a wheelchair, wouldn’t have agonized over mustering enough strength to stand face-to-face with her. But it’s Lassiter, with specific ideas about what it means to be a man, and for him that means looking Marlowe in the eye so they can press their hands together—this time not glass between them, nor either of their pasts, but this new challenge—in solidarity.
Lassiter’s not perfect: He has a lot of toxic masculinity left to unlearn, and he owns an appalling number of guns. He’s still more conservative than not. Because he’s a cop who becomes more sympathetic, his narrative contributes to the larger cultural trend of “copaganda” on television. It’s the same problematic issue that faces the characters on Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Even if he’s lovable, and especially because of this fact, his identity as a police officer complicates the conversation around his character growth.
But within the world of Psych, he’s a character with a worthwhile arc. Like Lassiter, the series started out following a strict formula, and only after it had relaxed into something stronger than its premise—its talented ensemble, ‘80s riffs, and library of delightful in-jokes and callbacks—could it grow beyond its initial form.
Speaking of in-jokes… For the 100-plus teases, hints, and outright cameos the series gave us of its signature symbol, we all failed to spot Psych’s most important pineapple appearance. Lassiter is the pineapple! Prickly on the outside, sweet (but still tart) on the inside. Often difficult to spot, but so rewarding to find. Case closed.

Ginsburg’s Recurring Cancer Exposes Vulnerability On The Court
Tumblr media
Below is my Hill column on the news that Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had additional cancer treatment. I have previously written about “Ginsburg’s gamble” in refusing to resign during the Obama Administration. Already over 80, some encouraged her to leave the Court to allow Obama to pick her successor — and to safeguard dozens of cases impacting the lives of millions. The recurrence of her cancer treatment exposes not only the risks of that decision but also the absence of any way for the Court to deal with potential incapacities.
Notably, Justice Thomas could face the same questions. Long rumored to be considering retirement, a defeat by Donald Trump could hand his seat to a liberal justice and endanger a number of conservative holdings.
Here is the column:
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is reportedly doing well after a course of radiation therapy for pancreatic cancer, but the news of her latest treatment sent Washington into collective cardiac arrest on Friday. Echoing many David Axelrod of CNN declared that President Trumppotentially filling her vacancy would “tear this country apart.”
Ginsburg is now 86, and this is her fourth bout with cancer following treatments in 1999, 2009, and 2018. She is not only a liberal icon on the Supreme Court but holds the critical fifth vote in areas ranging from reproductive choice to immigration to executive powers. Of all our government institutions, the Supreme Court is the most vulnerable to potential incapacities, not only because of its small number of nine justices, but the absence of any rule to deal with such eventualities.
Indeed, its history is rife with controversies over the health or capacity of its jurists. Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has stated that he fully intends to fill any Supreme Court vacancy arising before the end of the Trump administration. There is no question that the president would relish one more vacancy, but this is a standoff that favors Ginsburg. The Constitution has no provision to remove a justice for poor health or incapacity. It allows for only one way to remove a justice, which is impeachment. That rule has been tested repeatedly in history.
Justices have faced a variety of serious mental or physical incapacities over time. In the 19th century, Justice Nathan Clifford was described as a “babbling idiot” but continued to serve on the Supreme Court until his death. Justice Henry Baldwin was described as suffering from “incurable lunacy” and was hospitalized but served for more than another decade. Justice Ward Hunt was left speechless and paralyzed by illness but refused to resign unless given a pension. Congress finally relented and granted him a pension so it could wrest his seat from his hands.
In more recent times, Justice Frank Murphy and Justice William Rehnquist were alleged to have drug addiction issues while serving on the Supreme Court. The decision on when to retire is left to each justice, but the chief justice is expected to address questions over the fitness of the members. Back in the 19th century, Justice Robert Grier had three strokes and Chief Justice Salmon Chase finally insisted that he resign, though not until Chase secured his key vote to strike down the Legal Tender Act.
Of course, this will not work when the chief justice is the one whose capacity is in question. Chief Justice John Rutledge was described as experiencing “mad frolicks” and was “frequently so much deranged as to be in great measure deprived of his senses.” Having served by recess appointment, his nomination was the first to be rejected by the Senate. He later tried to commit suicide by jumping into Charleston Harbor.
The absence of any rule to deal with incapacities on the Supreme Court is particularly troublesome for a bench with only nine members. A single inactive member leaves the Supreme Court in a tie. For that and other reasons, I proposed more than two decades ago that the Supreme Court be expanded to 19 members. Democrats have now latched on to that idea for the wrong reason to stack the Supreme Court ideologically.
In an unprecedented filing, Democratic Senators Sheldon Whitehouse, Mazie Hirono, Richard Blumenthal, Richard Durbin, and Kirsten Gillibrand, warned conservative justices that they should change their voting patterns or face congressional intervention. They wrote that the Supreme Court “can heal itself before the public demands” it be “restructured in order to reduce the influence of politics.” While it is doubtful that Whitehouse and his colleagues could stack the Supreme Court, the threats make the Ginsburg news all the more rattling for Washington.
This is not the first time Ginsburg has been the subject of dire speculation. In July, she said of the late Republican Senator James Bunning, who died in 2017, “There was a senator, I think it was after my pancreatic cancer, who had observed with great glee that I was going to be dead within six months. That senator, whose name I have forgotten, is now himself dead, and I am very much alive.” Ginsburg planned to “stay longer” than the late Justice John Paul Stevens, who retired in 2010 at age 90. At the time, he was the second oldest serving and the third longest serving justice.
For her to do so, of course, would require her to hold her seat through the Trump administration. Thus, the return of her cancer unnerves many, including those who encouraged her to retire before President Obama left office so that he could appoint her replacement. Ginsburg opted to stay, and she clearly does not relish the prospect of Trump nominating her successor. She had said she would move to New Zealand if Trump were elected and later said sexism was a “major factor” in his victory.
For Ginsburg and her supporters, the decision not to retire during the Obama administration was akin to Captain Hernan Cortes burning his boats after landing in the New World. Ginsburg already was over 80 and effectively committed herself, and an array of key rulings, to as many as eight years to avoid handing Trump the chance to fill her seat on the Supreme Court and the ability to reverse cases dangling by one vote.
However, there is no evidence that Ginsburg has declined intellectually, and she has remained active and productive on the Supreme Court. She certainly has shown incredible stamina and resilience in fighting recurring cancer over the past 20 years. Hopefully that will continue, but her gamble still leaves many uneasy when so much hangs in the balance.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Samantha from American Girl, but she had already been archived during the period of time where my parents were willing to buy me American Girl dolls. I have Rebecca, instead, who I love just as much, but Samantha was my OG favorite, and no matter how much time goes by I can’t shake the wish of having her one day.
I’m probably gonna buy Samantha for myself eventually, if/when I get a job, but her old pre-archives outfit was my favorite, not that I don’t like the frilly pink Beforever edition. So, I improvised and made this cute dress for myself! It’s Rebecca’s, right now, because Samantha’s stories were only set ten years before hers and I can pretend Rebecca just got an old hand-me-down from a neighbor or something like that. Plus, Rebecca kind of needed a period outfit, since I haven’t been able to find her meet dress, yet. (I KNOW I still have it!)
(Dress detail babble below the cut!)
I actually made this using a self-altered version of the pattern for Samantha’s old Christmas dress, you know, the red one? I found it here (free PDF files available to download! How cool is that?) after someone here on Tumblr linked to the page. I can’t for the life of me remember who, but I owe them my doll-dress-making life, I could not have made this look right without that pattern. It’s hard (nearly impossible) to tell from the photo, but there’s actually a faux-pleat effect on the bodice, and an actual front pleat on the skirt, to make it a little more similar to the original dress. Just one, not double like the actual dress, but I’m happy with just one. The skirt is more poofy, but I’m a fan of that anyway, so I don’t mind one bit!
I used a sewing machine for parts of this, and it was my first time doing so since I was probably about ten. It isn’t perfect, but I finished the whole dress in about nine hours and it’s absolutely adorable, mistakes or no, so who am I to complain? My dad even said it “actually looks period”, which... it better, considering I more or less used an actual American Girl-approved pattern (maybe even Pleasant Company? I don’t know. I can’t remember.)
There are patterns for six of the oldest Historical Characters, Addy, Kirsten, Samantha, Molly, Felicity, and Josefina, which makes me super excited to make more dresses, so I will absolutely be doing more period dresses for my American Girls soon. I’m also planning to get started on some cute stuff for Ivory soon, so I’ll probably be posting more this month.

American Girl Unveils New Doll, and She’s Inspiring Girls to Reach for the Stars
The year was 1990. I was 8 years old and desperately yearning for only one thing for Christmas. Like magic, Samantha Parkington, one of the three original American Girl dolls, found her way under our family’s tree on Christmas morning. In a sea of blonde-haired, blue-eyed dolls available on store shelves, Samantha was the girl who looked like me. Many moms like me fell in love with American Girl during our childhoods. The lifelike accessories, the chapter books, and the detailed outfits enthralled us, offering hours upon hours of imaginative play. My little sister also had one of the original American Girl dolls, Kirsten. Together we would sit in our bedroom and play with our dolls before and after school, on holiday breaks, and in the summers. To us, Samantha and Kirsten weren’t just dolls; they were more than that. We imagined they came to life in our bedroom when we were away from home, eagerly awaiting our return so playing could resume. Image source: American GirlThis morning, new magic came to life on Good Morning America when American Girl’s Girl of the Year 2018 doll, Luciana Vega, was lowered from the studio ceiling onto a well-deserved pedestal where she was revealed to a group of eager girls dressed in spacesuits. As for a little background, Luciana Vega is an 11-year-old girl of Chilean descent who dreams of going to Mars. Luciana embodies young girls everywhere who want to be the next “first,” and is especially meaningful for those with interests in STEM. Julie Parks, an American Girl spokesperson, tells Babble: “For over 30 years, American Girl has championed a simple truth: that every girl has the power to change the world. Part of that power comes from girls learning about who they are and what kind of person they want to be, especially when faced with challenges or setbacks. For us at American Girl, it’s all about helping girls develop their strength of character (#charactercounts) — something that is more important in our world than ever. Luciana shows girls what it means to be a girl of strong character — where creative thinking, collaboration, and STEM literacy provide opportunities for meaningful growth and development.” Image source: American GirlThe contemporary space-craze theme kicked off with the 2016 movie Hidden Figures, which told the story of African American female “human computers” Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson who helped launch U.S. astronauts into space. In 2017, LEGO released their Women of NASA set featuring Mae Jemison, Margaret Hamilton, Nancy Grace Roman, and Sally Ride. Over the last two years, space-themed children’s merchandise has appeared everywhere, including products like bedding, costumes, games, and toys. And of course, the 2017 historical solar eclipse created a lot of buzz as well. Image source: American GirlParks tells Babble: “As technology continues to revolutionize what we do and what we know, Luciana is a character that can bring visibility and valuable lessons to girls at a time in their lives when they’re learning about their infinite potential to change the world. We know from various studies that encouraging girls in STEM opportunities can positively influence their personal development and identity. Luciana’s world is rich with opportunities for girls to immerse themselves in informal STEM play — to learn awe-inspiring details about the universe and their potential in it, and to go on fun, remarkable journeys that teach them more about themselves and deepen their understanding of the diverse communities and people they’ll come to know. We hope Luciana can encourage girls to become strong innovators in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math and be the ones asking, ‘What’s next?’” Image source: American GirlIn typical American Girl style, Luciana’s story is enjoyed and documented in several ways. First, with two books available now, and another coming out in May. There will also be over 20 products, including a Mars habitat “loaded with science and research essentials,” according to Parks. There will also be a robotic dog, and a space suit with patches, boots, and gloves. The Luciana collection will be available for purchase on January 1, 2018. While American Girl’s goal is for girls to immerse themselves in Luciana’s world of space and science, they also hope to demonstrate her “competitive spirit and self-confidence” as well as “bravery, curiosity, and wonder.” And let’s not forget, there are also videos, online games, and other digital activities, all created with the partnership of NASA, Space Camp, and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center designed to bring the magic home. As if Luciana couldn’t get any better, American Girl, along with their partners Scholastic, NASA, and Space Camp, will offer a “Blast Off to Discovery” free educational program for students in third through fifth grade on Scholastic’s website starting January 31. Image source: American GirlMy own 9-year-old is over the moon excited over today’s news, as she is obsessed with all things space. Her bedroom is decorated with stars, and books about solar systems and astronauts line her bookshelves. She reports space facts to us constantly and continues to surprise us with her extensive knowledge. She even begs us to go outside (no matter how cold it is) to use her telescope to look at the stars. When I showed her video of Luciana Vega this morning, she watched it on repeat with eyes wide with excitement! And as for this mom? I still have my Samantha doll and all her outfits and accessories. Last year, my oldest daughter convinced me to open up the carefully packed plastic tote, and together we dressed Samantha, set up a tiny picnic with her accessory set, and then tucked her into her brass bed, complete with plush white comforter and tiny pink ribbons … and it was just as magical as the day Samantha became mine. I cannot wait for Luciana to be the next cherished American Girl doll we bring home, this time placed in the arms of my daughter who dreams of one day claiming the title of astronaut and exploring the stars and skies for herself. Yaaay, I'm so happy you're answering lots of asks again, like, I know you have an actual life you have to live but I must admit... I've actually kind of missed sending you little asks and getting to know your thoughts on different subject matters :) I hope you're doing well though in the scary real life world? I don't know what the time is for you where you're at but for me it's currently 2:49 am which means I should probably try to sleep.. So goodnight, Kirsten, I hope you have sweet dreams💗💗
oh, I’m so glad that my forever-long and halfway-incoherent answers to asks is something you actually look forward to ❤ I feel incredibly stupid about 97% of the time, honestly, so knowing I’m not just a source of babble to people is so wonderful. and I’ve missed answering and being on here, I truly have. I got jaded with fandom for a while this past year, and found myself less and less on here. it took a lot of learning that I need to focus on making myself happy in fandom to really come back and then, well, this summer has been insanely busy.
I’m doing okay in this big, scary, real-life world! I’m graduating in December (then doing who knows what, but, hey, I’ll have a degree so that’s a start), and reading more books now that I’m done with my English classes. I volunteer and work at a law firm here in town and, while there are still plenty of bumps, I’m mentally in a better place now than I’ve been in a very long time.
how are you doing? anything make you smile this week?
you’re six hours ahead of me; when you sent this it was about 8:49 and, as of now, it’s just turned 11. I’ll be up writing for a bit, if you wake up at all in the next four hours or so.
I hope you have/are having the sweetest dreams, and thank you for missing me and messaging. it means more than you’ll know ❤❤❤
