Finally finished wind waker! Good Game 👍👍👍 I already watched some of the ending cutscenes (because I've been doing linkverse stuff and I need to know how all the games I'm using work lol) but they definitely work best when put together in one cohesive sequence. I didn't actually love either of the Ganon fights, but maybe that's because I was a bit worried about the fact it was quickly becoming 1 am 🤣

In other news, I can see why people like this Ganondorf. I should mention that I am in no way swayed by his little speech, especially with how he treated hyrule and his own people in ocarina of time, but I can sympathize, a bit. And I can see his thought process and how he got here. Basically, while I still do hate him, he's an actually well written villain! I can see how he's justifying his actions as if they're in the greater good instead of just the desperate actions of a man clinging to the power he once had. It's also really cool how he mirrors the king. They both take some pretty dubious actions towards fulfilling their goal, but in the end the king is able to accept the past is gone and stop dragging the children into it with him, while Ganondorf clings to it til the bitter end. And finally, Link and Tetra can stop fighting the battles of people long dead, and move to their futures. I appreciated the theme a lot! And man it felt good to finally see Aryll again! I missed her 🥺🥺🥺 in other notes, rip links poor little face, Ganondorf does not pull his punches

Modern Reader Adopts BOTW Link (Drabble)

Something goes wrong in the Resurrection Chamber. Link is awake, but he has yet to emerge. It's when small cries echo out that the spirit of the former king decided to go investigate.

Link is alive, but regressed in age so much that he's physically and mentally five years old! He didn't have the stanima to climb the wall, nor the strength to move boxes to help him climb over.

Desperate, the king spirit uses a form of ancient, forbidden magic to bring forth someone who could raise Link to be the hero Hyrule needs him to be in 3 years' time.

After getting over the shock of dimension travel, your immediate reaction was rage.

You encourage Link to wear your sound canceling headphones, and then you unleash your anger.

You rip into the ghost king with his past failures, reminding him that this is all his fault. Harshly critique his parenting skills and degrade him for the nerve of sending a child to fight an adult's war.

He argues back that Link is the descendant of a wielder of the Triforce and how some of his predecessors saved Hyrule at eight years old.

You show him Link's hand in response. No triforce symbol there.

"But how can this be?!" The king cried. "He's a direct descendant!"

"You fool. Courage is not a trait one inherits through bloodlines." You reply.

The king then tries to magically speed up Link's growth, but it hurts the child! You attack in retaliation. Ghost or not, you were throwing hands!

Your straightforwardness and protective nature earned you the triforce of courage, and you use it to end the ghost king like Harry Potter did Professor Quirrell. You choose to dwell on the fact that you have magic later and comfort your new son.

The child clings to your shirt, as far as his little arms could reach, and sobs as you cradle and nuzzle him.

"There, there. The bad man's gone now. Mommy made sure he wouldn't be able to hurt you any more."

Ruminations on the King of Owls

Suddenly, after Tears of the Kingdom the appearance of owls throughout the franchise has been re-contextualized. Rauru, the first King of Hyrule, was also called the King of Owls, so we should reconsider the Owl as a symbol for the King of Hyrule. In addition, we also know Rauru’s power as the Sage of Light was to eliminate evil. Then there’s also the fact that the ruins found in Faron (which might be older than the Zonai) also used the Owl as a symbol for Wisdom.

The first notable appearance of an Owl was the Owl from Link’s Awakening, and it was just part of the dream of the Windfish, but it did impart wisdom to the Hero and guided him a few times to help uncover the truth, so it does represent Wisdom. You could say that the Windfish itself is passing on wisdom to Link via the Owl, and if Link hadn’t defeated the Nightmare, they’d both be trapped in never-ending slumber until the end of their days.

The most famous appearance of an owl is of course, Kaepora Gaebora from Ocarina of Time. People were convinced that KG was an extension of Rauru from Ocarina of Time, but it just as likely that KG is the spirit of the first King of Hyrule himself. The ancient tablets found in Tears of the Kingdom tells us that King Rauru did have a sense of humor, which aligns well with KG’s strange behavior. (Better than OoT Rauru.) But for that to be true, we’d have to accept that King Rauru took some time to play as an owl in OoT in the middle of waiting for the timeline to reach the events of TotK.

Alternatively, KG could be another Sage of Light / King of Hyrule (neither OoT Rauru or TotK Rauru) that chose to help guide the Hero of Time.

(Maybe its one that died during the Hyrule Civil War right before OoT. Maybe he's Link's father! Oh, wait, it's supposed to be an ANCIENT Sage, nevermind.)

KG also appears in Majora Mask where he’s clearly a different Owl than the one from OoT, and only helps out the hero a few times in his journey. In both games, he still representing wisdom.

However, I have to mention Link’s shield in Majora’s Mask. The first shield that he carries is adorned with the image of an Owl. So very strange, I never thought Link was so fond of KG, but when you think of it as a symbol of the King of Hyrule it makes sense. Link did save the Kingdom in OoT, (essentially eliminating evil) it is likely the Zelda’s father awarded Link with that specific shield.

(Suddenly, the MM shield is a lot cooler.)

In Twilight Princess, not only were there Owl Statues hiding special runes from the City in the Sky (How that relates to the Zonai is a theory for another time), but you should also notice that the Hero’s Shade is wearing a set of armor that has an owl for a chest plate. It could mean that this former knight was a personal guard for the King of Hyrule. Or this is the official armor of the Knights of Hyrule.

Finally, I want to take a brief aside to talk about the Zonai’s third eye and the Sheikah’s “Eye of Shadow.” I had considered that maybe the Sheikah had adopted the third eye as their symbol because it was (in a way) King Rauru’s symbol, and he died protecting Hyrule. But, considering that the Sheikah likely predate the arrival of the Zonai, this is likely not the case.

It is more likely that the Sheikah eye is “the Eye of the Gods” and the fact that Zonai have three eyes is just a coincidence.

The “First” Calamity / Continental War Era: ‘wow that sucked’ King Ganondorf Dragmire the Exalted, the Oracle Consort Dragmire, the Hero of the Breach, and Queen Zelda Hyrule the Blessed.

The ‘Smothered’ Calamity Era: ‘we totally fixed it, guys’ Queen Urbosa Dragmire (+ Crown Prince Ganondorf Halim Dragmire), ‘Hero of Fortune’ Link ( + Junior), Maz Koshia (Sheik), and King Delphinus Godric Hyrule ( + Sovereign Heir Zelda Hyrule).

The ‘Foretold’ Calamity Era: ‘whack.’ King Ganondorf Halim Dragmire, Consort-to-Be Link (junior), A Good Boy, and Sheik (Sovereign Heir Zelda Hyrule).

I know technically the ‘third’ group shows up twice, but, well. That’s how sometimes-overlapping configurations of cosmic fuckery work, I guess.
