What's some of your guys's favorite art pieces? (That arent in the tournament obvi)

Mod Salix submitted most of their favourites, but the two I can think of that I didn't submit were The Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck (it might be a wedding portrait, and the lady isn't pregnant, that was actually just the fashion style of the time and the mirror is soooo well done but I don't have Emotions over it), and The Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries. Vermeer also has amazing colours but I couldn't pick one to submit.

as some of you might’ve been able to tell, mod cal is Very Normal about frida kahlo. (there’s a reason the blog’s icon is her.) most of my favorite pieces are frida kahlo’s because she makes me want to rip out my internal organs and hang myself with them. i didn’t submit the blog’s icon, but it’s called Self Portrait With Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird.

(Mod M) I dunno how artsy I really am but one type of art that I really love but did not submit is calligraphy. Just any kind, from anywhere. I also really like mundane objects that are decorated; in particular I am like unusually fond of this wooden comb, which I found while researching calligraphy for a class I took once (even though ig it's like a carving?) I love seeing how people related to the things around them when they were meant to last. I also like learning about art movements from South Asia and Islamic art because those things are personal to me :)

Well I guess I could share some drawings since usually I just dogpile everything I want to say into 1 post and don’t necessarily have room for the art which is sad.

So I decided for pride month I’ll just dogpile some of my art that I haven’t shown here relating to my favorites from hxh kind of being like those 60 color packs of crayons.

Three years ago today, I decided to join this fandom and I am so glad I did!

I had reblogged things randomly from a non-choices blog and liked things on my personal account but I had never really interacted with anyone or participated in the fandom. When I was in elementary school, I definitely was writing fan fiction, but then as I got older people made me feel less because of it and I stopped writing. Then I found this fandom community and decided to take a risk and pick it back up again. I never expected anyone to read it!

I'm truly grateful to everyone who has ever read or supported my writing here or on any of my blogs. You will never know how much it means to me! Thank you!

So how does one celebrate? With more fan art, obviously! 😍😍😍

so my AUs are super underdeveloped like they're really only ideas at this point and i *was* planning on developing them more this summer but *looks at the calendar* that kinda went bust... 😬

"REALISTIC" AU

that name doesn't really feel accurate i just literally don't know what else to call it but its my AU where MC is from miami (aka self-insert au ig?? even tho its supposed to be a self-insert anyway?? idk idk) and i just kinda wanted to explore the ramifications of an MC that knows a Miami that's very different from the one that miguel is in, not only bc its the 80s but also the criminal element and also the general areas of miami that i grew up in are very different from where miguel grew up... i also wanted to do HEAVY research about miami in the 80s (maybe i can show off my reading list lol) to get a more "authentic" portrait of the city ??? SO LIKE all that mixed together would kinda end up changing the plot up bc like ofc it'll still be romantic bc im a simp BUT bc im writing like a narrative with other themes and an "OC" and not a romantic visual novel, the elements i'll steal from CMIM are more like the skeleton of the plot and not a scene-for-scene remake, ykwim? so bc of that, i also imagined it shorter and also like a movie script - three-act structure and all that jazz SO!! its an action/adventure/crime/romantic/comedy taking place in 1980s miami!! ALSO U WENT TO SEE A MOVIE AND GOT SUCKED IN SO LIKE i wanted to explore that and the "man out of time" angle that the visnov can't rlly get into bc it can't assume anything about what time period ur from without breaking the self-insert illusion AND ALSO i rlly wanted some ängst re: if this is all real or if everything is gonna end once the "movie's over" ya kno i just love that drama spice of "do u love me bc ur supposed to love me, is any of this ur choice, what will happen when i wake up" and all that jazz 🤭 heehee hoohoo

bc every fandom's got one lmao 😉 its just the perfect way to keep the original story in tact while also keeping characters that you love alive lol (no spoilers but i saw *****'s death coming from a MILE away) so yeah this is just a silly self indulgent AU where everyone lives and CMIM is a movie that miguel stars in and MC is a production assistant that dreams of being big shot director someday or smthg and then oops they fall in love lmao NGL as i was writing this down, i realized this would make a pretty decent "singing in the rain" AU LMAO 😂 its not perfect 1-for-1 but like miguel as don, mc is cathy, ramon is cosmo, stella is lena 🤣🤣🤣🤣 this is too funny to me lmfaoooo i'd prob take insp from singing in the rain as far as plot goes bc i literally had none but still is more of an "actor au" than a "signing in the rain au"

rly not toooo different just kind of a facelift.. ive still.gotta do all the pictures for my carrd ive got a pfp done already n everyfing. the font i used is technically custom but its based on "wyatt bubbles regular" n then i just pretty much copied it while making a ton of adjustments. Not sure where i found it it ws on a pretty big font website though... i just realized looking like this that the moon motif is like Naurwhere well maybe this one wont have a moon. the pfp doesnt technicslly have one sigh... im debating between a moon pfp and the one on the left below which is a rework of the one on the right below to match the banner style better..

butalso not enough moon content. and i feel sort of conceited having my pfp being a technically self portrait SIGH. ive got a while to work on it tho since im planning t do the full redesign on my birthday (little over 2 weeks) so ig ill work it out. SMILES. ok thats all thank your.

alrighty its time for my yearly art improvement check!

this was from December 9th of last year...yeah

anatomy sucks, the lines make no sense, the earrings aren't even colored the eyes are lopsided. I don't even know where to start with on the hair.

and this is what I have this year

idk why but the colors keep getting muted on Tumblr but you get it. I improved on anatomy. this was kind of a study on lighting and I wanted to do some kind of background. I think I could still work on anatomy in the face and the shorts kinda look weird. I definitely got better at using the procreate app but I could use some more practice tbh.

here is a self portrait from like a month ago? idk it's recent and Im pretty proud of it. I was working on making something more stylized. I experimented with more textured brushes. anatomy is fine ig I gave up on the other hand lol and the feet look wonky in my opinion. the colors are fun I liked doing a greyscale piece.

The Extreme Self Uses Internet Aesthetics to Make Sense of Life Online

In moving digital to print, the new book asks whether the medium is always the message

“For thousands of years, earth’s resources have been extracted by bodies, most of whom were not free,” reads one of the opening pages of The Extreme Self. “But now, it’s our bodies, and our selves, being extracted. And… mostly we offer it up for FREE.” The word FREE stretches upwards away from the rest of the sentence, its serifs are elongated and a little unsettling: this isn’t “free” as in freedom; it’s “free” as in exploitation.

This sense of anxious ambivalence runs throughout The Extreme Self, the new “graphic novel” (and former exhibition) authored by the artworld dream team of critic Shumon Basar, novelist Douglas Coupland and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, which follows up their 2015 collaboration The Age of Earthquakes. Like its prequel, The Extreme Self collects neologisms and short-form textual fragments which question the ways that mass technological changes are changing how we experience the world around us. These texts are paired with images collected from a prestigious cast of artists, musicians and other contemporary thinkers from around the world and, crucially, tied together with graphic design by London-based studio Daly & Lyon.

Speaking to Eye on Design via video call, Basar describes the books as a “portrait of a friendship” between himself, Coupland and Obrist. This friendship had previously been expressed through a series of public discussions on the work and influence of Marshall McLuhan, whose book, The Medium is the Massage is a clear precedent to Age of Earthquakes and The Extreme Self. First published in 1967, McLuhan’s book provided a radical exploration of the effects of the modern media and technological landscape, expressed through the Modernist monochrome graphic design of Quentin Fiore.

“In 1967 Fiore described The Medium is the Massage as a dialogue between the computer and the book,” says Basar. “In our case, it’s a dialogue between the history and grammar of the book, and the history and grammar of the screen.” As with Fiore’s work on The Medium is the Massage, graphic design is central to the experience of The Extreme Self (so much that it’s odd Daly & Lyon aren’t listed as authors on the book’s cover, as Fiore was alongside McLuhan) which Wayne Daly of Daly & Lyon describes as akin to an “OS update” to Age of Earthquakes. Where the prequel was monochrome and dealt with broad economic, historical and political ideas, The Extreme Self is explicitly concerned with emotions and subjectivity, its pages ripple with full bleed images and collated “digital matter” which punctuate the paperback’s 250 pages. “The process for both books was myself and Shumon sharing screengrabs—any kind of online activity or screen activity—on a day-to-day basis,” Daly explains.

Thus, alongside regular print layouts and a meta-narrative of chapters announced through grotesque typefaces, readers find phone screens and chat bubbles, IG Live lovehearts and tracked changes, the They Don’t Know meme and bisected emoji faces. The blend of these different styles is effective in conveying the atmosphere of the internet – one of constantly shifting moods and aesthetic patterns, a blurring of text and image to express Tweet-length musings – rather than any particular website or digital activity. The McLuhan/Fiore reference is important here again: The Medium is the Massage echoes the experience of watching television with sequences of pages that flicker with movement like frames of a 35mm film. The Extreme Self, meanwhile, is more jarring in its progression, and effectively so. A hand-drawn self-portrait portrait might abut a full bleed enlarged photo, which might lead to a scribbled phrase or a montage of side-eye emojis. Yet for Basar and Daly, this displacement is crucial to communicate the book’s central ideas. “When you take material or content that you’re so used to seeing on a screen, then you re-format it, put it onto paper and put it on a white background, it’s as though you see it for the very first time,” argues Basar. The effect is akin to writing down a dream after you’ve woken up: the accepted reality of a dream quickly shatters into surreality the moment morphing faces and levitating bodies make it onto the page (or is that just me?).That said, The Extreme Self is far from a rejection of digital life: “There’s no point being horrified that the online world has replaced the real world,” reads one page. “It’s just a fact of life.” If anything, the book’s anxious mood is an expression of a certain awe at human technological capabilities, which spans everything from facial-recognition technology to the humble book. “With Age of Earthquakes, Shumon and I latched onto the idea of the book as a device, a piece of technology – maybe still the ultimate piece of technology,” says Daly. “It’s hand-size, not too dissimilar from a mobile phone in terms of its relationship to the human body, it’s a 3D object you rotate, you can look at it in different sequences.” McLuhan and Fiore recognized this as well. In one of the most celebrated opening spreads from The Medium is the Massage, McLuhan writes: “All media are extensions of some human faculty – psychic or physical.” He continues: “The wheel is an extension of the foot, book is an extension of the eye, clothing, an extension of the skin…” And yet in a vastly different context —McLuhan unfortunately passed away in 1980, before the internet was born —a context of “doomscrolling, doomscreaming, doomshopping, doomsitting, doomeating, doomtexting etc.” as laid out in The Extreme Self, the book endures as a technology to help us see; to help us make sense of our mediatized lives in anxious times.
