How does and can planning and design enhance the freedom and wellbeing of marginalized actors in the food system – low-income residents, people of colour, small-holder farmers, and refugees – the very people the alternative food movements purport to serve? That is the question of concern in this special issue in which authors from across the Global North and South explore the role of planning and design in communities’ food systems, while explicitly considering the imbalances in equity, justice, and power.

( Bloomberg ) - One hundred years of direct personal experience in the art of market management helps diamond producers achieve what other mining industry players could not achieve during the commodity collapse: to stop supplying.
When last year diamond prices fell by 18 percent - this was the biggest drop since 2008 - a quarter of the world supply has disappeared, as the largest diamond producers, De Beers and ALROSA (PAO), have reduced production volumes and sales volumes. This did not apply to mining mines, from iron ore to copper, where companies such as the Rio Tinto Group and BHP Billiton Ltd. spent billions in the previous decade on expansion and did not want to react to surpluses even when market prices fell for a long time.
De Beers has dominated the diamond industry since the early 1900s, when it had an actual monopoly on world supplies. Currently, the company dominates the market together with Russian ALROSA, the second largest diamond producer, and together they provided two-thirds of the world's gemstone in 2014. Their steps to reduce supply last year prevented an even greater decline, according to RBC Capital Markets. And now, while in the area of simple metals the recession continues, diamond prices are likely to have reached the lowest level, according to forecasts by Petra Diamonds Ltd., made this week.
"There are two diamond producers that account for more than half of the world's production," said Kieron Hodgson, an analyst at Panmure Gordon & Co. "And it's very easy to have a common position here. They realized that the industry is in a desperate situation and it is necessary to take measures. "
Prices for diamonds
In the last year, each product has experienced the impact of the global economic downturn, especially in China, the world's largest consumer of many types of raw materials. This country is the second largest jewelry market in the world. Diamond prices are now the lowest in six years, according to data from the UK-based WWW International Diamond Consultants. Last year, aluminum fell 19 percent, copper and tin fell 25 percent, zinc declined 26 percent, and iron ore slumped 39 percent.
As prices fell, diamond supply fell last year by 25 percent due to a reduction in production, and mines did not supply stones to the market, according to Panmure. At the same time, the volume of iron ore production fell by only 10 percent, and the production of nickel, copper, zinc and aluminum fell even less, according to estimates by Morgan Stanley.
"In our industry, the response was much more responsive in terms of supply than was observed in other industries," said Johan Dippenaar, chief executive officer of Johannesburg-based Petra, in an interview on Monday. He said that prices could grow in the next 6-12 months.
Domination in the market
De Beers, 85 percent of which is owned by Anglo American Plc, for most of the last century controlled supply and prices under the guidance of the Oppenheimer family. In order to maintain its power in the market, a company that began mining the huge Kimberley field in South Africa in the late 1800s preferred to buy up stones that it did not mined, and accumulated reserves when demand subsided. Its monopoly was challenged by new offers of stones found outside Africa, and it ended completely in 2004, when the company was found guilty of imposing prices after a decade-long legal war with the United States.
"The diamond trade market is relatively small and closed compared to other sectors of raw materials," said Anish Aggarwal, partner of Gemdax, an Antwerp based consulting firm. - Release of too large volume of output, when demand declined, could destabilize and depreciate the product for several quarters. The main goal of diamond producers is to achieve price stability. "
Jewelry retailers were in a very difficult situation. Tiffany & Co. Last week lowered its earnings forecasts for the year after the fall in the volume of holiday sales. Chow Tai Fook Jewelery Group Ltd., the largest jewelry company, has slowed down the implementation of expansion plans amid the difficulties of the retail market.
