~~~~
I have to warn them.
The thought reverberated through my brain as I scrambled desperately up the icy slopes of Ravenhill.
They have no idea.
As damaged as Thorin and I’s relationship was, I still couldn’t stand by as the man I loved walked to certain death. While he may have broken my heart, he still held the shards in his hands.
Voices sounded above me as I slogged up a path, and I quickly pressed myself up against a rock, listening intently. It was orcs, I knew that for sure, based on the evil laughter.
Looking out across the wide expanse of ice, I could make out Thorin, Bilbo and Dwalin staring up at the tower that loomed above me. I searched for Fili and Kili, but saw no sign of them. Dread began to pool in the bottom of my stomach.
Where were they?
“This one dies first. Then the brother. Then you, Oakenshield. You will die last.” Azog’s voice traveled easily, and I let out a gasp, craning my neck to see which of my nephews Azog had captured.
“May the Grace of Gilthoniel spare them, please.” I begged in a whisper, “Eru, don’t end their lives so soon.”
Tears stung my eyes as I heard an all too familiar voice. “Go. Run!”
Fili.
A scream welled in my throat and I clamped a hand over my mouth, the world shattering around me as the tears flowed down my cheeks. My heart plummeted in my chest.
“Here ends your filthy bloodline!” Azog growled, and I flinched, closing my eyes as I heard the thud of a body hit the ground.
“Kili!” I heard Thorin bellow faintly, but I couldn’t pull myself away from my grief just yet. All I could see was the golden-haired dwarrow smiling, hands tucked into his belt as he listened to his dark-haired brother talk about something. Blue eyes that were so like Thorin’s, but brighter, less shadowed with the weight of sorrow.
It wasn’t right that his life should be claimed so soon.
Gritting my teeth, I walked slowly up the path, dreaded the scene I would come upon. Of how disfigured I might find my nephew.
Turning the corner, I paused for a heartbeat as I saw the spread-eagle form. Then I rushed over, wiping at the tears that had started to fall again. His chest still heaved, but for how long I did not know.
“Fili,” I breathed, falling to my knees beside him.
“Auntie?” His voice was breathless, quiet. “What are you doing here?” His words were stilted as he gasped for breath.
“Save your breath,” I cautioned, pulling apart his maille to reveal a bleeding gash on his breast. I bit my lip as I took in the sight, wishing I had herbs on me. This was too serious to just bandage and leave. From the looks of the wound, the blade or whatever had stabbed him could have clipped an artery, which would meant that Fili had only minutes before he bled out.
My mind switched over from my anguished state into the mindset of a calm healer, and I took a deep breath. Grabbing my dagger, I cut off a strip of cloth from my tunic and pressed it against Fili’s chest. He let out a groan as I put pressure on the tender area.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered as I watched him grit his teeth; eyes tightly closed. Turning my gaze back to the cloth that was turning scarlet. I pressed harder, trying to stem the bleeding. Fili moaned, sucking in quick, shallow breaths through his clenched teeth.
Then to my horror he relaxed, and I hurried to grab his wrist to feel his pulse. It was rapid, but there. His breath still came in shallow gasps, but he was alive. I relaxed slightly as I realized he’d only lapsed into merciful unconsciousness. Now was not the time to worry about the head trauma he would have had to received from the fall he had taken. Anything that removed him from the agonizing pain he was in was a blessing.
Then I noticed the crimson stain spreading across the snow beneath him. “Merciful Manwë,” I breathed. He hadn’t just been stabbed, he’d been run completely through. “Damn it,” I swore, tearing another piece of cloth off my tunic and stuffing it under his back.
“I know I heard a voice. I am not a Dwarf, Eledhwen.” Elvish floated up to my ears and I looked around wildly for the source.
“Over here!” I called, and instantly I could hear footsteps crunching in the snow. In seconds, two blonde elleths appeared, and upon seeing me crouched over a body, picked up their pace.
“Do you have athelas? Or yarrow?” I asked as they crouched beside me. “He’s been run through, and I can’t get the bleeding to stop through putting pressure on it.”
“We don’t have athelas, but Idrial has yarrow, don’t you?” One of them—Eledhwen, I supposed—said, looking over at her comrade.
“Yes,” Idrial responded, digging in a pouch on her waist. “One moment…”
As we waited for Idrial to find the yarrow, Eledhwen reached out a gentle hand to smooth back Fili’s hair, her hand paused on his forehead for a moment. “He has no fever, so the blade was not morgul,” she murmured.
“Here!” Idrial exclaimed, pulling out a small leather sachet. She moved closer and I moved back to allow her space to work.
Removing the bloody rag from Fili’s chest, Idrial sprinkled the contents of the sachet onto his chest and packed it into the wound. “Athelas, tavnen a Yavanna’s cam, cranthacîn thel.” She intoned as she did so.
“This is one of Durin’s Line, is it not?” Eledhwen asked quietly, her brown eyes piercing as she looked over at me.
“Yes.” I replied softly, and she nodded.
“We can care for him. Something tells me that you will be needed elsewhere.” She murmured with a smile.
I gaped at her for a moment before rising to me feet. “Le hannon, mellon.” I whispered, smiling slightly at the look of shock that flickered across her face at my perfect Síndar.
Then I was off, climbing up the hill in search of Kili and Thorin, praying fervently that I wasn’t too late. But I couldn’t have just left Fili to die; the snow around him painted red with his blood as the world faded away into darkness and he drew a last trembling breath.
“NO!” A female wail shattered the air, and I jumped in surprise, hurrying in the direction of the scream. Perhaps I could be of help…
The thought vanished; run through with a frigid bolt of fear as I rounded a corner to see Kili on the ground, and a familiar elleth driving a large orc away.
My heart, only just back in my chest, plummeted again.
He was so still.
“Kili?” I called tremulously as I knelt beside him. “Kili?”
His eyes remained closed, and as I studied his face, my heart broke. I could see the wetness on his lashes, and a single tear on his pale cheek. The idea of Kili crying seemed so foreign, so wrong. It went against his cheeky nature.
With shaking hands, I searched for a pulse. But none pulsed readily beneath my fingers. Desperately, I continued to search.
“You can’t be gone, Kili. You’ve got that lass of yours waiting for you, remember?” I choked out, letting his arm drop to the rocky ground. Pulling apart his tunic, I laid a hand on his chest, avoiding the bleeding gash in chest that eerily mirrored Fili’s.
Faintly, I could feel his heart beating weakly. Letting out my breath in a rush, I cut off another strip of cloth from my tunic to press to his chest. This time, I knew that he hadn’t just been stabbed.
But I feared that time was running out. Kili was so pale, and his pulse so weak, I half expected his shallows breaths to cease altogether. It would take more than yarrow and counter-pressure to bring him back from the edge of death.
“Anor valthen, togo laugas lín nestad enin gûr hen.” I murmured, exerting pressure on Kili’s chest. “May the grace of the Valar spare him. Please.” My voice broke.
“Kili.” A heartbroken, trembling voice whispered behind me, and I looked over my shoulder to see Tauriel limping over. “Is he..?” Her voice trailed off.
“No, he’s still alive, but I don’t know for how long.” I replied, and she let out a long sigh. “I don’t have the skills of an Elf, but you do. At this point, I’m powerless.”
Tauriel looked at me apprehensively. “I don’t have any herbs with me, what can I do?”
“Help him hold on a little longer until someone who does comes along.”
I pushed myself to my feet, wincing at the ache in my bones from staying in the same position. “I need to go find Thorin before he gets himself killed.”
Tauriel nodded silently, her hands pressing firmly on Kili’s chest.
Taking one last glance, I ran up Ravenhill, dodging dead orcs that littered the trail. I found it comforting that I didn’t see any scarlet spatters, only black from the orcs.
Reaching a wide expanse of ice, I stopped, looking around for Thorin. My eyes fell on the carcass of the pale orc, a sword still skewering his chest.
But no Thorin.
Cautiously, I stepped out on the ice, sliding across it as my gaze searched the rest of the ice.
Shadows fell across the ice, and I looked up to see the Eagles swooping in on the orc army far below. I smiled, watching as they decimated the ranks with ease.
But then my gaze fell onto the huddled figure on the ice.
“No! Thorin! Thorin, don’t you dare…”
It was Bilbo, and he was cradling Thorin’s head as he lay on the ground in a pool of scarlet.
My heart dropped into the swirling abyss that had opened up in the pit of my stomach, vanishing from existence as I began to scream.
“Thorin!” I wailed, running towards him with tears streaming down my face. “Thorin!”
~~~~
The darkness was comforting, calling for him. It promised an ease from the excruciating pain that burned his side.
He had no regrets. He’d made his peace with the hobbit and redeemed his people from both the dragon and the pale orc. That was much more than he'd set out to accomplish, but he had done it.
Except…
Estel. His last words with her were harsh; his last memory of her one of bitter regret as he watched her eyes fill with tears as she turned away from him.
The darkness nudged at him again, and he relented to its irresistible tug. The hobbit was saying something about eagles, but that didn’t matter anymore. Thorin was going to rest.
Blinking blearily, he saw a figure coming towards him, obscured with bright white light. An angel of sorts, he presumed. Strange how it looked just like Estel.
The wind screamed his name as he closed his eyes, a broken, desperate cry that faded away with everything else.

Pick Up Lines
Welp, so a special someone has a birthday today, and I took part in a writing contest that she had to celebrate it. The funny part about this is that I wrote this story literally the day after I picked out my prompt. So I've been sitting on this story for about 2(?) months just waiting in suspense to share it, XD
HAPPY BIRTHDAY @guardianofrivendell!!!
I used this quote.
And this is a pairing between Fili & Tullaina
Warnings: Well, there maybe be an innuendo in there somewhere... ;) and a swear word or two. Nothing crazy
Pick Up Lines
My eyes flickered across the yellowing parchment of the scroll I had been assigned to read. At first the words were interesting and held my attention. Then as my attention began to wander, they became dull and frankly, dare I think it? Meaningless?
The librarian--and Ori--would strangle me, no questions asked if they knew how dull I found this ancient scrap to be.
The soft rustle of paper brought my attention back to the Dwarrowdame sitting across from me; dark-haired head bowed over the pages of an absurdly large and heavy tome whose title was written in overly large, flourishing golden script: A Brief History of Durin's Line: Volume 205.
I made a mental note to add my tutor, Lorelei, to the list. If she knew that I was more interested in a certain dark-haired dame than the 'exceedingly valuable and history-filled document whose knowledge is crucial to your future role of King' scroll, then she would be madder than Uncle Thorin when Kili had accidentally, (I wasn't so sure about that part), kicked Thorin's clothes into the river as he attempted to jump into it as we camped by it during the Quest.
It probably wouldn't help that Kili had already pissed her off earlier today during his session with her when he tried--unsuccessfully-- to flirt with her. Apparently the dame couldn't tell that my baby brother was head-over-heels for her.
"Oi, Fili!" A low, feminine voice called out loudly, making me cringe and breathe a sigh of relief all at the same time.
I twisted in my wooden chair to look over at the approaching Dwarrowdame. Dark red hair bounced messily across her shoulders as she trotted towards the table Lorelei and I occupied. The bright, beaming smile on her freckled face lit up the whole room and I found myself grinning automatically as she stopped beside my chair.
"Are you still studying these dusty old scrolls? Doesn't Thorin know that the sun is shining outside and there are things," she winked meaningfully at me, "that need to be done?"
I chuckled, pushing my chair away from the table with a soft scraping sound and stood up to tower a few inches above the dame.
"Good afternoon to you too, Tullaina." I answered, hurrying to roll up the parchment I had been trying to read until thoughts about Tullaina entered by head. Lorelei took one look at how I was treating the ancient parchment and let out an indignant gasp.
"I'll handle that, Prince Fili. Just don't damage this priceless piece of knowledge!" She gasped, snatching the scroll away from me and cradling it gently.
"Sorry, Lory." I apologized sheepishly, but she only shook her head.
"Just go on, I know you are eager to go spend time with Lady Tullaina. Do not let me stand in your way, Prince Fili." She sighed, and I shot a grin at Tullaina.
"Let's go and you can tell me about what things you have in mind."
~~~~~
We strolled through an abandoned corridor of Erebor together, Tullaina chatting animatedly about a prank she had conjured up when she'd accidentally set fire to one of Erebor's kitchens while attempting to assist one of the cooks with the cutting of a slab of pork.
"...and all the smoke and the blood from my finger made me think of setting up a sort of scene in one of the corridors and making a huge smoky fire and spilling berry juice everywhere. It would look like one big murder scene without a body." She finished up excitedly, and I could only smile.
"I like the idea, Tulls, but don't you think that's a bit complicated? I mean, coordinating all that and finding all those berries..." I trailed off as Tullaina's nose wrinkled up as she frowned.
Adorable.
"I guess..." She nodded, pondering my words. "Is there something else we could do for June Fools?"
I glanced over at her, making momentary eye contact with those wondrously captivating brown irises of hers.
"Well... I was considering something that is a bit more.... Criminal."
Tullaina's eyes got big.
"What?!" She hissed, stopping dead to stare at me in disbelief. "Fili, are you nuts? If your Uncle caught us doing something illegal..."
I shrugged, a smirk winding its way across my face as I took in her confusion. "You've already committed a crime, Tulls, and you made it look easy."
She let out an indignant gasp and put her hands on her hips in a gesture that warned me that she was getting angry. "Fili, I may be many things, but I am not a thief." She ground out, but I kept smirking at her. "How dare you accuse me of such a thing! I've never stolen a thing in my life!"
My smirk only grew as she denied any thieving activities. Crossing my arms across my chest, I raised an eyebrow at her in perfect seriousness. "Oh, but you have stolen something, Tulls." I murmured, making Tullaina frown up at me.
"What are you accusing me of stealing? Fili, I swear, if this is about that bloody teddy bear you had when you were thirty--"
I shook my head, holding up a hand to halt her angry spew of words. "No, you stole my heart." I murmured, holding eye contact with her.
Her mouth dropped open in an expression of complete surprise and shock and she stared mutely up at me. "I, wha-what?" She choked out, and I quickly dropped my serious approach.
Today was not the day.
Quickly plastering on a teasing grin, I nudged her with my elbow, forcing out a laugh. "Gotcha." Then I started walking again, stamping down all the doubting, questioning thoughts threatening to break through the wall I had built.
But in a moment, Tullaina was beside me again, her laughter echoing off the stone walls. "Mahal, Fili.... You really had me going there for awhile..." She giggled, raising her hand to brush her hair over her shoulder. "That's a really bad pick-up line, though...."
I grinned sheepishly. "Yeah, I thought you'd get a laugh out of it. And unfortunately there's more where that came from."
Tullaina's warm brown eyes lit up and she looked expectantly up at me. "Okay, spill." She asked excitedly, almost bouncing as we walked.
I eyed her anxiously, unsure how to proceed with this. But then she looked over at me and all my doubts were whisked away in the blink of an eye.
I was her friend, she was mine. There was nothing more here. Just treat her like you always do.
"Alright, what about this one? Do you have a sunburn or are you always this hot?"
At first, Tullaina gaped, then she snorted; eyes closing as she giggled. "That one's not bad..." She commented, and I felt a burst of encouragement.
"My friends bet me that I wouldn't be able to start a conversation with the most beautiful girl in the tavern. Wanna buy some drinks with their money?"
Tullaina shrugged at that one, tilting her hand from side to side. "That one's okay..."
To my horror, the next one that popped into my mind--and subsequently out of my mouth--was one that I never would have dreamed of saying to Tullaina. "Aside from being sexy, what do you do for a living?"
Instantly, Tullaina's cheeks turned beet red--likely matching mine--and she turned to look at me, the corners of her mouth twitching as if she couldn't decide if it would be appropriate to smile or not. "Ummm...."
"Mahal, I didn't think before I spoke, Tulls." I apologized, rubbing the back of my neck.
Tullaina giggled nervously. "It's alright, Fili. I just never expected that to be something you would say to a lass."
"It's not something I would say unless I'm completely off my face." I admitted, and the smile returned hesitantly to her face. "But, what do you think of this one? Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?"
Tullaina stuck out her tongue. "That one is awful..." She stated with a wrinkled nose. "0/10 would recommend using."
I laughed, feeling a soothing wave of relief wash over me as the previous awkward mood faded. "I thought that one wasn't half bad!" I defended the line, but Tullaina only rolled her eyes.
"You're a Dwarrow. Of course it sounds good to you. But if you were a dame... We have a different perspective on things." She explained offhandedly. "Please, continue."
"Do you have a name or can I call you mine?"
"Where in Mahal's name did you get this one?!" Tullaina exclaimed, pretending to gag. "That one is worse than the last!"
"I'll agree with you on this one. I'd never dream of using this to get a lass' name. It's just rude."
Tullaina nodded vigorously. "If you used it on me, I'd slap you so hard you'd have a permanent imprint of my hand on your face." She stated venomously, and I took a hesitant step sideways. This made her laugh as she watched me. "Not now, if you had just met me and were being weird. Only one of those things applies to you so you're safe."
I let out an affronted gasp. "I'm not weird!"
Tullaina only shrugged, smirking at me. "I'm a girl, and to girls, boys are weird."
"Fair point. And the same is true likewise."
Removing the extra space I had put between us by taking a sideways step, Tullaina looked over at me. "Okay, one last one, then we actually need to move onto serious topics. If you let me, I will procrastinate over June Fools, and that cannot happen on our first try at doing Twelve Months of Fools. I mean, we've already gotten through five months successfully! We can't stop now!"
I nodded, giving Tullaina a sly look. "Alright, unless that would be the prank all along since people are expecting it now?"
"NO!"
"Fine, fine..." I relented, extending my hand towards her. "Your hand looks heavy, can I hold it for you?"
"Sure." Tullaina placed her hand in mine; palm gentle and warm against the calloused, rough surface of mine.
The unexpected motion had my brain shutting down as I frantically tried to figure out what was supposed to happen next.
Tullaina shot me a confused look, glancing down at our hands. "Fili, you're supposed to hold my hand back, not just suddenly let it become a limp noodle."
I didn't respond, trying frantically to think of something--anything!--to say. Which, of course, led to the absolute last thing I wanted to say being the exact thing I said.
"Your lips look lonely, would they like to meet mine?"
Tullaina's lips parted; the bottom jutting out just the tiniest bit because it was slightly bigger than the top. Not that I knew this because I'd spent literal days just gazing at her perfect, sensual lips.
No, not at all.
"Fili, I, uh, yeah..." Tullaina whispered, and I stared at her in shock.
She stared back expectantly.
The silence continued on for another very long, very awkward moment until Tullaina spoke up. "You're not going to say anything? Are you serious or is this just a prank?" She asked, and I detected just the barest hint of vulnerability in her soft-spoken words.
I sucked in a deep breath, realizing that I hadn't really been breathing between my last sentence and Tullaina's. "I don't know," I breathed, staring at Tullaina in terror. "I didn't think I would get this far!"
The corner of Tullaina's mouth turned up in a smile. "Maybe we just experiment a bit, yeah?" She asked, taking one step closer to me. "Because I'm bloody scared out of my mind, Fili, but if I don't do this I'm going to regret it for the rest of my life."
I nodded silently, staring down at her as she took another slow step closer, rising up on her toes. Automatically, my hands settled on her waist, steadying her as I leaned down to meet her plush, distracting lips.
"OH DEAR MAHAL, FINALLY!!"
Tullaina and I jumped apart, looking around wildly for the terrifyingly familiar voice. I found it in the form of Kili as he peeked out from a pillar, hands clamped around his mouth and a look of absolute panic on his face.
"Oh, uh, I wasn't supposed to interrupt you... Just go back to kissing or whatever. Pretend I was never here." He faltered, looking at Tullaina and I sheepishly. "Sorry."
I took a step forward, bristling as I prepared to teach Kili a lesson he wouldn't forget. "Kili, I'm going to--"
Tullaina grabbed my sleeve, stopping me in my tracks as she finished my sentence. "Spend time with Tullaina. Come on, Fili. We have things to do and abandoned corridors to explore."
The Day the Wind Screamed (1/?)
Tumblr media
Based off of this prompt.  I originally intended for this to be just one long fic, but it has ended up being multi-chaptered.  And Tumblr has been an absolute b*tch about letting me post it.  So far I’m on ‘third times the charm’
I have to warn them.
The thought reverberated through my brain as I scrambled desperately up the icy slopes of Ravenhill.
They have no idea.
As damaged as Thorin and I’s relationship was, I still couldn’t stand by as the man I loved walked to certain death.  While he may have broken my heart, he still held the shards in his hands.
Voices sounded above me as I slogged up a path, and I quickly pressed myself up against a rock, listening intently.  It was orcs, I knew that for sure, based on the evil laughter.
Looking out across the wide expanse of ice, I could make out Thorin, Bilbo and Dwalin staring up at the tower that loomed above me.  I searched for Fili and Kili, but saw no sign of them.  Dread began to pool in the bottom of my stomach.
Where were they?
“This one dies first. Then the brother.  Then you, Oakenshield.  You will die last.”  Azog’s voice traveled easily, and I let out a gasp, craning my neck to see which of my nephews Azog had captured.
“May the Grace of Gilthoniel spare them, please.”  I begged in a whisper, “Eru, don’t end their lives so soon.”
Tears stung my eyes as I heard an all too familiar voice.  “Go.  Run!”
Fili.
A scream welled in my throat and I clamped a hand over my mouth, the world shattering around me as the tears flowed down my cheeks.  My heart plummeted in my chest.
“Here ends your filthy bloodline!”  Azog growled, and I flinched, closing my eyes as I heard the thud of a body hit the ground.
“Kili!”  I heard Thorin bellow faintly, but I couldn’t pull myself away from my grief just yet.  All I could see was the golden-haired dwarrow smiling, hands tucked into his belt as he listened to his dark-haired brother talk about something.  Blue eyes that were so like Thorin’s, but brighter, less shadowed with the weight of sorrow.
It wasn’t right that his life should be claimed so soon.
Gritting my teeth, I walked slowly up the path, dreaded the scene I would come upon.  Of how disfigured I might find my nephew.
Turning the corner, I paused for a heartbeat as I saw the spread-eagle form.  Then I rushed over, wiping at the tears that had started to fall again.  His chest still heaved, but for how long I did not know.
“Fili,” I breathed, falling to my knees beside him.
“Auntie?”  His voice was breathless, quiet.  “What are you doing here?”  His words were stilted as he gasped for breath.
“Save your breath,” I cautioned, pulling apart his maille to reveal a bleeding gash on his breast.  I bit my lip as I took in the sight, wishing I had herbs on me.  This was too serious to just bandage and leave.  From the looks of the wound, the blade or whatever had stabbed him could have clipped an artery, which would meant that Fili had only minutes before he bled out.
My mind switched over from my anguished state into the mindset of a calm healer, and I took a deep breath. Grabbing my dagger, I cut off a strip of cloth from my tunic and pressed it against Fili’s chest.  He let out a groan as I put pressure on the tender area.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered as I watched him grit his teeth; eyes tightly closed.  Turning my gaze back to the cloth that was turning scarlet. I pressed harder, trying to stem the bleeding.  Fili moaned, sucking in quick, shallow breaths through his clenched teeth.
Then to my horror he relaxed, and I hurried to grab his wrist to feel his pulse.  It was rapid, but there.  His breath still came in shallow gasps, but he was alive.  I relaxed slightly as I realized he’d only lapsed into merciful unconsciousness.  Now was not the time to worry about the head trauma he would have had to received from the fall he had taken.  Anything that removed him from the agonizing pain he was in was a blessing.
Then I noticed the crimson stain spreading across the snow beneath him.  “Merciful Manwë,” I breathed.  He hadn’t just been stabbed, he’d been run completely through.  “Damn it,” I swore, tearing another piece of cloth off my tunic and stuffing it under his back.
“I know I heard a voice. I am not a Dwarf, Eledhwen.”  Elvish floated up to my ears and I looked around wildly for the source.
“Over here!”  I called, and instantly I could hear footsteps crunching in the snow.  In seconds, two blonde elleths appeared, and upon seeing me crouched over a body, picked up their pace.
“Do you have athelas? Or yarrow?”  I asked as they crouched beside me.  “He’s been run through, and I can’t get the bleeding to stop through putting pressure on it.”
“We don’t have athelas, but Idrial has yarrow, don’t you?”  One of them—Eledhwen, I supposed—said, looking over at her comrade.
“Yes,” Idrial responded, digging in a pouch on her waist.  “One moment…”
As we waited for Idrial to find the yarrow, Eledhwen reached out a gentle hand to smooth back Fili’s hair, her hand paused on his forehead for a moment.  “He has no fever, so the blade was not morgul,” she murmured.
“Here!”  Idrial exclaimed, pulling out a small leather sachet. She moved closer and I moved back to allow her space to work.
Removing the bloody rag from Fili’s chest, Idrial sprinkled the contents of the sachet onto his chest and packed it into the wound.  “Athelas, tavnen a Yavanna’s cam, cranthacîn thel.”  She intoned as she did so.
“This is one of Durin’s Line, is it not?”  Eledhwen asked quietly, her brown eyes piercing as she looked over at me.
“Yes.”  I replied softly, and she nodded.
“We can care for him. Something tells me that you will be needed elsewhere.”  She murmured with a smile.
I gaped at her for a moment before rising to me feet.  “Le hannon, mellon.”  I whispered, smiling slightly at the look of shock that flickered across her face at my perfect Síndar.
Then I was off, climbing up the hill in search of Kili and Thorin, praying fervently that I wasn’t too late.  But I couldn’t have just left Fili to die; the snow around him painted red with his blood as the world faded away into darkness and he drew a last trembling breath.
“NO!”  A female wail shattered the air, and I jumped in surprise, hurrying in the direction of the scream.  Perhaps I could be of help…
The thought vanished; run through with a frigid bolt of fear as I rounded a corner to see Kili on the ground, and a familiar elleth driving a large orc away.
My heart, only just back in my chest, plummeted again.
He was so still.
“Kili?”  I called tremulously as I knelt beside him.  “Kili?”
His eyes remained closed, and as I studied his face, my heart broke.  I could see the wetness on his lashes, and a single tear on his pale cheek.  The idea of Kili crying seemed so foreign, so wrong.  It went against his cheeky nature.
With shaking hands, I searched for a pulse.  But none pulsed readily beneath my fingers.  Desperately, I continued to search.
“You can’t be gone, Kili. You’ve got that lass of yours waiting for you, remember?”  I choked out, letting his arm drop to the rocky ground.  Pulling apart his tunic, I laid a hand on his chest, avoiding the bleeding gash in chest that eerily mirrored Fili’s.
Faintly, I could feel his heart beating weakly.  Letting out my breath in a rush, I cut off another strip of cloth from my tunic to press to his chest.  This time, I knew that he hadn’t just been stabbed.
But I feared that time was running out.  Kili was so pale, and his pulse so weak, I half expected his shallows breaths to cease altogether.  It would take more than yarrow and counter-pressure to bring him back from the edge of death.
“Anor valthen, togo laugas lín nestad enin gûr hen.”  I murmured, exerting pressure on Kili’s chest.  “May the grace of the Valar spare him.  Please.”  My voice broke.
“Kili.”  A heartbroken, trembling voice whispered behind me, and I looked over my shoulder to see Tauriel limping over.  “Is he..?”  Her voice trailed off.
“No, he’s still alive, but I don’t know for how long.”  I replied, and she let out a long sigh.  “I don’t have the skills of an Elf, but you do.  At this point, I’m powerless.”
Tauriel looked at me apprehensively.  “I don’t have any herbs with me, what can I do?”
“Help him hold on a little longer until someone who does comes along.”
I pushed myself to my feet, wincing at the ache in my bones from staying in the same position.  “I need to go find Thorin before he gets himself killed.”
Tauriel nodded silently, her hands pressing firmly on Kili’s chest.
Taking one last glance, I ran up Ravenhill, dodging dead orcs that littered the trail.  I found it comforting that I didn’t see any scarlet spatters, only black from the orcs.
Reaching a wide expanse of ice, I stopped, looking around for Thorin.  My eyes fell on the carcass of the pale orc, a sword still skewering his chest.
But no Thorin.
Cautiously, I stepped out on the ice, sliding across it as my gaze searched the rest of the ice.
Shadows fell across the ice, and I looked up to see the Eagles swooping in on the orc army far below. I smiled, watching as they decimated the ranks with ease.
But then my gaze fell onto the huddled figure on the ice.
“No!  Thorin!  Thorin, don’t you dare…”
It was Bilbo, and he was cradling Thorin’s head as he lay on the ground in a pool of scarlet.
My heart dropped into the swirling abyss that had opened up in the pit of my stomach, vanishing from existence as I began to scream.
“Thorin!”  I wailed, running towards him with tears streaming down my face.  “Thorin!”
~~~~

“GERROF!”
I jumped at the roar from behind me, whirling around to see Thorin awake again and thrashing.  “Hold still, dwarf.”  Saelind murmured, “I only wish to look at the gash on your head.”
“KEEP YER HANDS OFF ME!”  Thorin’s bellowed words slurred together, but he let the elleth peer at his head without much more of a fuss.
Stepping forward, I came into Thorin’s line of sight.  His eyes widened and he tried to sit up, only to have Saelind instantly push him back down. “Don’t move!  You’ll tear your stitches!”  She scolded, “just look at you…”  Her voice softened, “even that hurt, didn’t it?”
The cot rustled as Thorin shook his head.  “It was not the worst I’ve experienced…”  He muttered defiantly, making me roll my eyes.  His face was pale and a fresh sheen of sweat had broken out on his brow.
“Thorin…”  I sighed, shaking my head at him.
He looked at me in surprise. “Estel, what are you doing here? Where did you come from?”  He asked, and I raised an eyebrow.
“…I’ve been here as long as you have, Thorin.”  I said slowly, wondering over how he had completely forgotten about my presence.
“No you haven’t…”  Thorin protested, frowning.  “I have not seen you since—”  He fell silent, blue eyes turning guilty.
Saelind watched the entire interaction closely, her brow furrowed.  Once Thorin fell silent, she addressed him.  “Did you bump your head as some point?”  She inquired, and Thorin shrugged.
“I do not recall if I—”  He paused, eyes darting back and forth.  “Well, perhaps once…”
“That’s what I thought…” She sighed, turning to me.  “Estel, may I speak with you privately for a moment?”
“O-of course…”  I fumbled, confused.
Saelind led me a short distance away from Thorin.  “I think he has a concussion on top of that abdominal injury and the bruising on his chest. Did you notice his slurred speech and confusion?”  She asked, and I nodded.
“Yes, I would have to be dumb not to notice that.”  I replied, biting my lip as I contemplated my next passage of thought.  “Is it…  Is it bad?” I whispered, and the elleth shrugged.
“I do not know at this time, but with what symptoms he is showing, I would say it is quite serious.  Memory loss isn’t typically a good sign, and neither is the repeated lapses of unconsciousness he’s experienced.  I can give him the episode while I was stitching him up, but anything else isn’t good.”  She explained with an apologetic look.
“Can you treat it?”
“Right now, I would prefer for him to remain conscious so I can monitor him.  I really can’t make an effective diagnosis until I’ve observed him longer.”
“I understand.”  I sighed, fidgeting with my fingers.  “I thank you for all you have done so far.”
“There is nothing to thank, it is my job.”  Saelind smiled before she excused herself to return to Thorin, leaving me standing alone in the midst of a bustling room.
Drawing a deep, tremulous breath, I swallowed hard and scanned the crowded room for any sign of one of the few healers burdened with the task of tending to the wounded.
A swath of black hair caught my attention, and I watched as a young Dwarrowdame hurried through a row of hastily set-up cots; arms full of snowy white bandages.
She hurried over to a pair of cots that had been set up by themselves in a corner and laid down her armful of bandages; leaning over the occupant of one of the beds.
Gaining a small measure of control over myself, I headed over to see if I could be of any help. It would be a waste of both talent and lives if I didn’t volunteer what little healing knowledge I had.
But my thoughts were diverted as I caught sight of the two Dwarrows she was tending to.  Instantly, I picked up my pace, stopping beside Fili’s bed since the other dame was next to Kili’s.
“Oh, Fili, Kili…”  I whispered, horrified at their bruised and bloodied condition.  I’d forgotten just how bad they’d look in my worry over Thorin.  Stars above, it was a miracle they were even breathing right now.  Fili looked visually the worst, and I thanked the Valar that he was still mercifully unconscious.  Looking up at the dame, my gaze was drawn to how Kili clutched at her hand.
The dame looked over at me with a furrowed brow, her blue eyes confused.  “Do you know who ‘Lory’ is?  He keeps calling her name.”  She asked, trying and failing to pull her hand away from Kili’s.
“That’s his wife.”  I answered, and Kili stirred slightly.
His eyes fluttered open and he fixed an unfocused gaze on the dame.  Instantly, a crooked smile began to wind its way across his bloodied face. “Lory…”  He rasped, “Amrâlimê.”
The dame shook her head patiently.  “No, Prince Kili, I’m Loka.  Lory isn’t here.”
Kili’s grin dissipated slightly, and his eyes took on a more puzzled expression.  “My Lory has green eyes, like emeralds.  Yours are blue…”  He wondered aloud, turning his head to look over at me.  “Auntie!  You have to meet Lory.  Isn’t she gorgeous?”  He asked, motioning towards Loka with his free hand and subsequently flinching at the resulting pain the action caused.  But he continued beaming at me through his obvious pain.
I debated on playing along, wondering if it would be worse to break the news that Loka was not Lorelei rather than simply nodding my head.
Loka didn’t wait around though and finally succeeded in pulling her hand away from Kili.  “Prince Kili—”
Kili frowned, trying to reach out and grab Loka’s hand again.  “Did I do something wrong, love?  You haven’t called me ‘Prince Kili’ in years.”
“Kili then.  You need to lie still for me so I can properly wrap up that nasty wound.”  Loka scolded gently, proceeding to produce a small dagger from somewhere and cutting away Kili’s blood-soaked shirt.  “Mahal, you were ran straight through!  It’s a miracle you’re even alive now!”  She exclaimed as she got a good look at the gaping wound in Kili’s chest.  “You are lucky that there was an elf nearby!”
Kili shrugged, wincing immediately afterwards, “what can I say?  I’m unstoppable.  But, Lory, don’t you think you’re moving a bit fast?  I mean, Estel is right there.”  He hissed, and I picked up on the seductive edge on his voice.
Leave it to Kili to be thinking about that while he was almost-fatally injured.
Loka didn’t bother to respond, focusing solely on wiping away the dried blood that had crusted around the edges of the wound.  I snatched up a bandage, determined to be of some help after standing there so uselessly.
Catching sight of me standing ready, Loka motioned for me to wait a moment.  “I need to get the yarrow and plantain.  Hold on to that bandage for a second.”  She hurried away.
Kili watched her go with a smile on his face.  “She’s great, isn’t she?”  He murmured, and I managed a forced smile.
“Yeah, she is, Kili.  But you need to just rest and let us patch you up. We still need to bandage Fili up.” I responded, regretting my words almost instantly as Kili tried to sit up so he could get a better look at his brother.
Grabbing his shoulders, I forced him back against the pillow, noting the renewed sheen of sweat that covered his pale face and his accelerated breathing.  “Don’t move!”  I hissed, but Kili shook his head, struggling weakly against me.
“No, no, I need to see Fee. That bloody orc got him and, and….” Kili’s voice broke off in a hiccuping sob.
I hushed Kili, trying desperately to think of some way to calm him down so that he wouldn’t make his wounds worse than they already were.  “He’ll be fine, Kili.  I tried to buy him some time, but you need to let me and Loka do our jobs.”
Thankfully, Loka arrived back with a pair of small satchels and a vial full of milky liquid.  Setting the satchels down on the foot of the cot, she removed the small cork from the vial.  Moving closer to Kili’s head, she slid her arm underneath his head to lift it slightly.  “Here, take a couple drops of this.  It’ll make everything better, I promise.”  She murmured, and Kili eagerly swallowed the small amount Loka tipped into his mouth.
Within a few heartbeats, his eyes began to close, and he fell into unconsciousness.  I looked at Loka curiously.  “What did you give him?”
She smiled grimly. “Poppy milk.  He’ll be out of it for the next day or so.  I didn’t give him very much.”  Then she extended her hand towards me, nodding towards the bandage. “Now, shall we finish cleaning him up?”
“I think you should be the one doing it.  I may have some healing knowledge, but I would feel better if you were the one doing it.”  I said, and Loka laughed.
“So that if something goes wrong, it’s my fault?”  She teased, and I shook my head, a shadow of a smile glimmering across my face.  Odd how war and carnage had a way of bringing us womenfolk together.
“No, that’s not my reason,” I laughed, handing over the bandage.  “You trained for this sort of thing, I haven’t.”  Loka just shook her head, chuckling to herself as she expertly placed the plantain and yarrow leaf mixture onto the gaping slit in Kili’s chest. Then she carefully laid the bandages across it and fastened them tightly to his skin with a thick pasty liquid.
Once that was accomplished, she straightened up with a sigh.  “Alright, now for the other prince…  Thank Mahal that he is unconscious.”
I turned my gaze over to Fili, biting down hard on my lip to stop the tears that tried to collect in my eyes.  Getting teary-eyed would not help me now, but it was hard to resist the urge to go find a quiet corner where I could have a good cry and try and forget the horrors that had just occurred.
“Can you cut off his shirt and mail as best you can?  I’m going to get Oin and get his opinion on Prince Fili.”  Loka piped up suddenly, hurrying off in a swish of skirts before I could think of a reply.
Drawing a deep breath, I began unfastening the coat of mail as gently as I could, not bothering to pull it off Fili entirely for fear of hurting him.  The fall he’d taken had not been small, and I guessed by the way his left arm was bent oddly that it was broken.  Grabbing the small dagger Loka had used, I very carefully cut away Fili’s shirt.
The moment my fingers touched the fabric, I shuddered.  It was wet and warm, but not in a good way.  Pulling my hand back, I stared down at my fingers which were stained with red liquid.  Tugging away the loose cloth, I caught a glimpse of bright scarlet blood oozing from the wound that was eerily similar to Kili’s.
Fighting back the wave of nausea that overwhelmed me, I took a step back; averting my eyes from the horrifying scene.  “What did they do to deserve this?”  I whispered, looking back down at my blood-stained hands.  All of a sudden the room felt too hot and the walls began to close in on me.
“Estel, you alright?” A familiar loud voice broke through my thoughts and I looked up sharply.  Oin was standing before me with Loka right behind him, her brow furrowed as she watched me with concern.
I opened my mouth to speak, but I couldn’t formulate a sentence.  But Oin seemed to understand and gave me an awkward pat on the shoulder.
“It’s hard to see’m like this, I know.  But we’ll do all we can to make sure they pull through.  Now how ‘bout you go an si’down someplace.  Me and Loba here can handle Fili.”  He reassured in a soft voice—or, at least what was considered soft for Oin.  I swallowed and nodded, turning away as Loka and Oin bent over Fili’s prostrate body.
But where could I go? The halls of this mountain were practically endless, and I didn’t quite feel like going back to my rooms.  Too many memories lingered there that I wasn’t ready to face.
So I began to wander aimlessly through the rows of the wounded, slowly making my way towards the door.
“Hey, lass!”
A call from yet another familiar voice stopped me in my tracks as I looked around for the source. Finally, I located it in the form of Bofur as he trotted towards me.  “How are ya holding up?  I heard tha’ ya were tendin’ ta Thorin.”
“An elf is caring for him,” I answered shortly, clasping my hands together before me.  “I-I’ll be fine.”
Bofur frowned and came a step closer to me, looking hard at me.  “Yer just puttin’ on a front, aren’t ya?”  He asked in a gentle voice, “Estel, I can tell tha’ ya aren’t fine.  It’s okay not to be.”
Bofur’s gentle words were the last straw, and my knees buckled beneath me.  Bofur reached out and wrapped an arm around me; holding me up as I began to sob.  Anger and guilt rushed through me; anger that Thorin had been so stupid and selfish so as to invite war, and guilt that I couldn’t have done more to stop him.
“You’re right,” I hiccupped, “nothing’s alright.  I have to stand by and watch as the people I call my family fight for their lives—but I can’t do anything to help!”
“Hey, it’s alright lass,” he soothed, guiding me to walk forward.  “We’ll just go find a quiet place without all these listenin’ ears.”
I buried my face into his shoulder, letting him pick the path.  In doing so, I missed seeing the way Thorin’s eyes followed after me; the way his hands clenched into fists as he saw my anguish.
“Bofur.”
Bofur stopped, turning his head to look at Thorin.  “Aye, Thorin?”
“Come here.”
Bofur looked down at me, and I shook my head.  “I, I don’t want to talk to him right now, Bofur.”  I whispered hoarsely, and Bofur pursed his lips.
“Are ya sure?”  He questioned gently.
“Ye—I don’t know.  I don’t know anything anymore.  It all just hurts.”  I whimpered, and Bofur made soothing noises.
“Let’s just go over to Thorin for a bit, okay?”  Bofur suggested cautiously, tugging me in the direction of Thorin’s cot before I could say yes or no.
The next thing I knew, Bofur had turned me about so that I was facing Thorin, looking down at all his injuries and hurts.  After seeing Fili and Kili, my emotions had done a complete 360 towards Thorin.  I held him responsible for what happened on that battlefield, and the memories of what he had done to me resurfaced.
I wiped hurriedly at the tears on my face, but Thorin had already seen them.  He reached out a hand to touch my arm.  “Amralime,” he called softly, his comforting baritone sending me into a fit of passion.
“Don’t call me that anymore, Thorin Oakenshield!”  I cried, glaring down at him with as much dignity as I could muster when I had tears streaming down my cheeks and a stuffy nose.  “You lost ‘your love’ when you went back on what you told me!”
Thorin had the indecency to look confused at my words.  “Estel, what do you mean?”  He asked, and I scowled at him through my tears.
“I mean everything you said to me that day when I tried to reason with you.”  I hissed, watching as recognition flashed across Thorin’s pale, perspiring face.  Bofur laid a hand on my arm.
“Easy, lass.” He soothed, but I shook him off.
“No, I want to hear his excuse.  Give me one good excuse, Oakenshield and I might believe you.”  I challenged, glad that Saelind was momentarily absent so I could question Thorin without her interference.
Thorin looked up at me with guilty eyes.  “I do not have one, Estel.  What I said and did was inexcusable.  You have never deserved such words and I swear to Mahal that if I had been able to prevent myself from saving them, I would have.  I would give up the Arkenstone itself for you, Estel, and you are not thieving Elven scum.  Quite the contrary.”
I stared down at him mutely, blinking as I processed his words.  I had expected some sort of excuse about him being possessed with the dragon-sickness or something of the like.  Never an open admission that what he had said could not possibly be excusable.
Suddenly, I felt like my eyes were opened.  I remembered the dark, blank look in his eyes and the slow, reptilian quality his voice had taken on.  And I saw how the Thorin before me had none of those qualities; how he had willingly sacrificed himself for his people.
Realizing that I was temporarily speechless, Thorin went on.  “Estel, I will understand if you still do not wish to be bound to me. If you wish to move on, I will not stop you.”  He paused for emphasis, “I’m sorry.”
“I forgive you.”
Thorin’s brow furrowed, and he winced as the action pulled on the gash on his forehead.  “Estel, I do not expect you to forget all that I’ve done…”
I cut him off with a shake of my head.  “No, Thorin, I’ve been just as blind as you.  I didn’t want to see past the man who hurt me and see that you had overcome that.”
A smile began to pull at the corners of Thorin’s mouth, and he grinned up at me.  “I will do everything in my power to right my wrongs against you, Estel.  I swear that to you.”
I smiled wistfully back, allowing him to take my hand in his and squeeze it gently.  Someday things would go back to the way they used to be, but the road to get there would be a long one.
“Estel,” Thorin’s voice was anxious, “why is there blood on your hands?”
