Raj Kumar from Karnataka .. directed by dear dear friend Ramanathan ji , with whom I need several historic films ..
... most of the work done at the AVM Studios in Madras/Chennai .. songs and scenes in Kathmandu, Nepal .. and glorious times spent in its execution .. injuries and all ..
.. the phone song ‘jidhar dekhoon’ .. Pancham da insisting I sing it .. was really badly sung but went with the moment of the scene , so it went ..

.. and in that little break in the shoot to go kayaking with the little fellow .. Abhishek .. the rapids in Nepal are famous the world over and is a very popular sport among the tourists that come from all over the world .. almost drowned there .. got stuck in the kayak as it turned over and could not turn it around in the rapid waters .. still photographer Alam, who travelled with me , realised the situation jumped in and turned the boat over and saved me ..
... and the injury because of that above .. had to slide down the rope in a song and action sequence .. never realised that rope friction is the worst burn ever .. the shot happened .. sliding down I knew I was damaging my hand but what the heck the show must go on .. shot over the hand lacerated to bits ..
.. PACK UP .. into hospital .. drugged , treated , stitched up .. bandaged .. off to Bombay then to be at the wedding of Chintu .. yes Rishi Kapoor .. there I am all strapped up , in the baraat .. Shammi Kapoor ji in front of me .. at the Burmah Shell Complex in Chembur .. and by next morning back to Chennai/Madras and resume shooting ..
.. the art of camouflaging the injured hand became a routine exercise later too, when it blew up during Divali, handling a bomb firecracker .. immediate films .. Inquilab and Sharaabi .. hand in pocket mostly or a handkerchief wrapped around to express style .. 🤣🤣🤣 ..

Bijli Giraake Chali Gayi

It can’t be. It’s not true.
These were my thoughts as I initially read the news last night. After one hour of Google searches and going through celebrity twitter posts, I finally realized that she is gone.
But it still didn’t sink in. It still hasn’t sunk in.
In her memory, I watched the 1991 Yash Chopra romance, Lamhe. As I was watching, these lines from the title song, “Yeh Lamhe”, resonated with me.

Just as Viren was unable to free his heart of the love and memories he had of Pallavi, we will never forget Sridevi’s meaningful impact in Indian cinema. Viren was unable to replace Pallavi and Indian cinema can never replace Sridevi.
Unlike many others, I had not felt the impact of Sridevi in my childhood. My only memory of Sridevi from my childhood was my awe as I watched her facial expressions in the “Hawa Hawaii” song from Mr. India.
It was only a few years later when I saw English Vinglish that she became more than just another forgettable 80s heroine. What differentiated English Vinglish from the other comebacks of 80s and 90s heroines (Kajol with Dilwale, Madhuri Dixit with Aaja Nachle, etc.) was that Sridevi had no qualms in not looking glamorous. She was completely immersed in the part of a middle-class housewife and mother of two children who was often ridiculed for her weak English speaking skills. She was able to portray a responsible, caring mother and at the same time a naïve, childlike woman left in the middle of an unknown city. Shashi Godbole was perhaps the finest role of Sridevi’s career.
Enamored by her performance, I was prompted to look back at her films from the beginning of her career. At the young age of four, she started her career with the Tamil film, Thunaivan. Continuing as a child actress in South Indian cinema, she eventually made her Hindi film debut at the age of fifteen in Julie as the younger sister to the protagonist, Julie. In the late 70s and early 80s, Sridevi worked in many South Indian films spanning four languages, Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam, and Kannada.
But her big break in Hindi cinema was the 1983 blockbuster, Himmatwala, in which she starred opposite Jeetendra. The film is often remembered for the song, “Naino Mein Sapna, Sapnon Mein Sajnaa” (There is a dream in the eyes, my beloved is in these dreams) which established Sridevi as the girl of everyone’s dreams.
That same year saw the release of the Kamal Hassan-Sridevi starrer, Sadma, which was dismissed as a flop at the time but has since then gained cult status. Considered by many to be one of the best performances of her career, in this film, Sridevi broke the image of the glamorous heroine by playing the role of a woman with the mind of a seven-year old child. We were introduced to her beautiful smile and her infectious laughter that kept us charmed for decades to come.
She continued to deliver hits through the 80s and 90s, some of which included Mr. India, Chaalbaaz, Chandni, Lamhe, and Khuda Gawah, as she dabbled with mainly comedy and romance. She proved her equally brilliant dance skills with hit numbers such as “Mere Haathon Mein “ from Chandni and “Naa Jaane” from Chaalbaaz.
After a 15 year hiatus from the industry, she returned with the critically acclaimed English Vinglish, and soon followed it with the revenge thriller Mom. Mom did not have the same amount of impact as English Vinglish and yet, Sridevi shined in the role of a mother seeking vengeance for her daughter’s traumatic experience. I can’t imagine any other actress who can emote such strong emotions of angst and vengeance with such a straight face.
It is still difficult to believe that she is gone and these lines from the song, “Hawa Hawaii”, portray the essence of who she truly was:

Remembering Anand Bakshi Sahab on his 15th death anniversary.
Anand Bakshi (Bakhshi Anand Prakash Vaid) was born in Rawalpindi, now in Pakistan, on 21 July 1930. His ancestors were Mohyal Brahmins from Kurree, near Rawalpindi, and had their origins in Kashmir. His mother, Sumitra, died when he was five years old. Bakshi's family migrated to India (Delhi) on 2 October 1947, in the aftermath of the partition, when he was 17 years old. The family arrived in Delhi, via a Dakota aircraft, and then migrated to Pune, then Meerut and settled in Delhi finally.
Bakshi was fond of writing poetry since his youth,but he did this mostly as a private hobby. In a 1983 interview with Doordarshan, Bakshi recounted that after his initial studies, he joined the Indian Army, where due to a paucity of time, he could only write occasionally. He continued to write poetry whenever time permitted, and used his songs and lyrics in local programmes related to his troop. He worked in the Army for many years and simultaneously tried to market his songs in the Mumbai film world.
Anand Bakshi came to Hindi films to make a name for himself in writing and singing but ended up becoming more successful in writing lyrics. He got his break writing songs in a Brij Mohan's film titled, "Bhalaa Aadmi", 1958, acted by Bhagwan Dada. He wrote 4 songs in this film. His first song in this film was "Dharti Ke Laal Na Kar Itna Malaal" which was recorded on 9 Nov 1956. In his own voice on All India Radio interview
After writing for few movies from 1956 onwards, he first found success in 1962, with Mehendi Lagi Mere Haath, which was produced by (LimeLight), Music Kalyanji & Anandji, Music Pub-HMV/Saregama. Bakshi later made another mark for himself writing a quawalli for the 1962 film Kala Samundar, the song was "Meri Tasveer Lekar Kya Karoge Tm". He got his real big breakthroughs in 1965 with Himalaya Ki God Mein, and a huge breakthrough again in 1965 with the super hit film Jab Jab Phool Khile, starring Shashi Kapoor; and yet again in 1967 with the super hit movie Milan (starring Sunil Dutt). These six hit films within a decade of his entry into films cemented his status as a lyrics writer of immense caliber. He went on to work as a lyricist of over 3500 songs and 638 films in his career.
He got his first break as singer in a film directed by Mohan Kumar's Mom Ki Gudiya(1972). The first song he sang was a duet "Baaghon mein bahaar aayi hothon pe pukaar aayi", along with Lata Mangeshkar for music composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. He also sang the solo " Main dhoondh raha tha sapnon mein" from the same film. He also sang songs in 4 other films: Sholay (1975) where he sang the quawwali "Chand Sa Koi Chehera" along with Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar, Bhupinder, the song was released only on the vinyl but not in the feature film; Maha Chor (1976); Charas (1976); and, Balika Badhu (1976).
Anand Bakshi’s was widely associated with music Composers such as Laxmikant Pyarelal, R D Burman, Kalyanji Anandji, SD Burman, Anu Malik, Rajesh Roshan and Anand-Milind and his songs have been sung by all the top singers as also other singers like Shamshad Begum, Ila Arun, Khursheed Bawra, Amirbai Karnataki, Sudha Malhotra and more. He is known to have worked with more than one generation of music composers.
He wrote the first recorded songs of many first time male and female leads who went on to become stars, and also of singers like Shailendra Singh, Kumar Sanu, Kavita Krishnamurthy, etc., and he established himself as a versatile lyricist with the song "Dum Maro Dum" in the movie Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1972).
After this, he wrote memorable lyrics in many movies including Bobby and Amar Prem (1971), Aradhana 1970, Jeene Ki Raah, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Aaye Din Bahar Ke, Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay (1975), Dharam Veer, Nagina, Hum (1991), Mohra (1994), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), "Pardes" (1997), Heer Raanjha, Dushman (1998), Taal (1998), Mohabbatein (2000), Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) and Yaadein. She then starred in her 300th film role in the 2017 thriller Mom. She earned critical acclaim for her performances in both films. In 2013, the Government of India awarded Sridevi the Padma Shri, the country's fourth highest civilian accolade for her contributions to the entertainment industry. Honourary awards were also conferred on her by the state governments of Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. Sridevi was also voted 'India's Greatest Actress in 100 Years' in a CNN-IBN national poll conducted in 2013 on the occasion of the centenary of Indian cinema. Remembering Anand Bakshi Sahab on his birth 87th anniversary.
Anand Bakshi (Bakhshi Anand Prakash Vaid) was born in Rawalpindi, now in Pakistan, on 21 July 1930. His ancestors were Mohyal Brahmins from Kurree, near Rawalpindi, and had their origins in Kashmir. His mother, Sumitra, died when he was five years old. Bakshi's family migrated to India (Delhi) on 2 October 1947, in the aftermath of the partition, when he was 17 years old. The family arrived in Delhi, via a Dakota aircraft, and then migrated to Pune, then Meerut and settled in Delhi finally.
Bakshi was fond of writing poetry since his youth,but he did this mostly as a private hobby. In a 1983 interview with Doordarshan, Bakshi recounted that after his initial studies, he joined the Indian Army, where due to a paucity of time, he could only write occasionally. He continued to write poetry whenever time permitted, and used his songs and lyrics in local programmes related to his troop. He worked in the Army for many years and simultaneously tried to market his songs in the Mumbai film world.
Anand Bakshi came to Hindi films to make a name for himself in writing and singing but ended up becoming more successful in writing lyrics. He got his break writing songs in a Brij Mohan's film titled, "Bhalaa Aadmi", 1958, acted by Bhagwan Dada. He wrote 4 songs in this film. His first song in this film was "Dharti Ke Laal Na Kar Itna Malaal" which was recorded on 9 Nov 1956. In his own voice on All India Radio interview
After writing for few movies from 1956 onwards, he first found success in 1962, with Mehendi Lagi Mere Haath, which was produced by (LimeLight), Music Kalyanji & Anandji, Music Pub-HMV/Saregama. Bakshi later made another mark for himself writing a quawalli for the 1962 film Kala Samundar, the song was "Meri Tasveer Lekar Kya Karoge Tm". He got his real big breakthroughs in 1965 with Himalaya Ki God Mein, and a huge breakthrough again in 1965 with the super hit film Jab Jab Phool Khile, starring Shashi Kapoor; and yet again in 1967 with the super hit movie Milan (starring Sunil Dutt). These six hit films within a decade of his entry into films cemented his status as a lyrics writer of immense caliber. He went on to work as a lyricist of over 3500 songs and 638 films in his career.
He got his first break as singer in a film directed by Mohan Kumar's Mom Ki Gudiya(1972). The first song he sang was a duet "Baaghon mein bahaar aayi hothon pe pukaar aayi", along with Lata Mangeshkar for music composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. He also sang the solo " Main dhoondh raha tha sapnon mein" from the same film. He also sang songs in 4 other films: Sholay (1975) where he sang the quawwali "Chand Sa Koi Chehera" along with Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar, Bhupinder, the song was released only on the vinyl but not in the feature film; Maha Chor (1976); Charas (1976); and, Balika Badhu (1976).
Anand Bakshi’s was widely associated with music Composers such as Laxmikant Pyarelal, R D Burman, Kalyanji Anandji, SD Burman, Anu Malik, Rajesh Roshan and Anand-Milind and his songs have been sung by all the top singers as also other singers like Shamshad Begum, Ila Arun, Khursheed Bawra, Amirbai Karnataki, Sudha Malhotra and more. He is known to have worked with more than one generation of music composers.
He wrote the first recorded songs of many first time male and female leads who went on to become stars, and also of singers like Shailendra Singh, Kumar Sanu, Kavita Krishnamurthy, etc., and he established himself as a versatile lyricist with the song "Dum Maro Dum" in the movie Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1972).
After this, he wrote memorable lyrics in many movies including Bobby and Amar Prem (1971), Aradhana 1970, Jeene Ki Raah, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Aaye Din Bahar Ke, Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay (1975), Dharam Veer, Nagina, Hum (1991), Mohra (1994), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), "Pardes" (1997), Heer Raanjha, Dushman (1998), Taal (1998), Mohabbatein (2000), Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) and Yaadein.
