The Quest for the Key to Return Hearts!/The Other Promise/Vector to the Heavens
What's this? A second Keys Twilight Town cover? Yeah you know I was gonna have to do one for this mini-arc, so much happened in it, I just had to. Like come on, between the Ducktales squad, the sheer drama of everything, and of course That Moment (if you read Keys you know what I'm talking about, plus you can see it right there). Anyway, I'll shut up about all that now and let the piece speak for itself :3

running list of severe injuries and illnesses that the main character (a fucking thirteen year old kid) has had within this book series that I'm now rereading because it was one that I loved as a kid myself:
asthma attack that nearly resulted in his death
being impaled through the lung with a dagger
a compound broken lower leg
stay tuned as I update the list as I keep reading

Round 1, Poll 5: The Oz Books vs The Keys to the Kingdom
Tumblr media
Everyone knows The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but the rest of the series has faded as time has gone on; Keys to the Kingdom is lesser known, but is backed by popular author Garth Nix!
Remember to reblog for a bigger sample size!

My dealer: got some straight gas 🔥😝 this strain is called "seven keys to rule the epicenter of the universe" 🤯 you'll be zonked out of your gourd 💯
Me: yeah whatever. I don't feel shit.
5 minutes later: dude I swear these keys are changing me, not just physically, but mentally, too
My buddy Suzy pacing: Dame Primus is lying to us

See everyone's saying all their favorite book series as a kid, but I've literally never seen anyone mention Gath Nix's The Keys To The Kingdom. It's about a boy that, through being at the right place at the wrong time, is caught up in a literal Cosmic Dispute over The Last Will and Testament of The Actual, Literal Universe.
I love these books? Even today? The protagonist is hilarious, smart, and incredibly relatable. He doesn't want to be in the Silly Alternate World, he wants to be In Bed. He has asthma, and it's an integral part of his character.
The side characters are so unique, and their issues are basically the only reason the protagonist does anything. They're also really amazingly dressed??? There's people dressed like crows, pirates, 20th Century businessmen, miners with paper wings, and the first antagonist Arthur meets is wearing something akin to Pajamas. The settings, too, are so amazing. There's a different theme every time, different people, new ideas.
It's also has some very interesting themes that I can't even discuss, because doing so would spoil the ending. I'll just say that you think it's promoting a certain Belief until it's very much Not.
If you're looking for a book series to replace the Hogwarts-sized hole in your heart, I'd recommend giving this series a try! Garth Nix is a trans ally and a wonderful storyteller.

Me: I listen to a totally normal amount of podcasts Also me: Oh no, the new Matt Gourley/Amanda Lund project used the same stock music that Mary Kate Wiles used as the theme music for her Anne of Green Gables audiobook series, if they keep using it throughout the show it's going to be really distracting

J's Story
"I grew up reading a lot of fiction. I digested most of my middle school library and probably a third of my highschool library. I was reading 1-2 books per day for years. I've come across many great and sometimes underappreciated stories. Green angel, Xanth, The keys to the kingdom, the sword of truth, Ishmael, I could name dozens. However, no story stuck with me so much as the inheritance series. The color, detail, subjects, personality.. it completely blows the dragon riders of pern out the window. I'm writing this now because I saw murtagh today in the store and I cannot express how pleased I am to find that such a gem of a writer is continuing to work today. I hope Christopher continues to publish books. He can do so knowing I will read each and every one."

Trust No One/Not What He Seems
Finally got my ass in gear and made some art this damn month. The Gravity Falls cover for Keys has been a long time coming, but I think it turned out really nice! Fun fact, my first Keys world cover was actually for GF, but I decided to revamp it from the ground up to make it look more in line with the rest of the covers. It's weird drawing GF characters again after so long, but very fun. I enjoyed it ^_^

because of This Post about childhood books, I decided to go and start reading a little of the first book of the Keys to the Kingdom series, Mister Monday, by Garth Nix
and DAMN I completely forgot how well the story concept was pulled off and how well it still holds up to the test of time when it was published literally twenty years ago
I read this series when I was maybe 10-12 years old? or perhaps a bit older. I don't remember much about it other than it was a very cool series and I greatly enjoyed it at the time
and NOW I'm being blown away again because it has all this funky conceptualisations of time in different realms/planes of existence, which is exactly the sort of thing I want to include in Aleuthera once the main theme of the campaign is revealed!!
so I'm honestly really interested in continuing to read more of this series, A. to remember what it was like, and appease the child in me who devoured these books many years ago, and B. to get down some good timey-wimey inspirations!
