Milestone Monday
On this day, August 7, 1960, American actor David Duchovny was born in New York City. Beloved as FBI agent Fox Mulder on the long running television series The X-Files, Duchovny inspired audiences worldwide to want to believe in the supernatural. With the congressional UFO hearings fresh off the news cycle, if there was ever a moment to lean into Mulder’s ethos, it’s now!
As part of Special Collections' extensive comic collection, we hold several of The X-Files comics (a gift from our friend James Lowder) published by Topps Comics between 1995-98. The comics are a spin-off of the first season of the television series and are packed with all the dramatic pauses, spooky plot twists, and witty banter viewers are accustomed to. Topps intended to adapt every episode, but never made it into season two citing challenges with The X-Files creator Chris Carter who diligently scrutinized rough drafts.
The X-Files comics had a renowned staff of artists including Gordon Purcell (known for his Star Trek work), Charles Adlard, and cover artist Miran Kim. Our issues were written by Stefan Petrucha, John Rozum, and Wisconsinite Kevin J. Anderson. Their artistic interpretations of the series capture the actors’ deadpan humor and Scooby-Dooish stories, staking their claim within the comic world and placing The X-Files within publishing history. There is no shortage of collectibles for The X-Files fandom, but we are happy to share our few contributions with you in celebration of David Duchovny’s birthday.

We couldn't resist placing this David Duchovny action figure on the moon. The figure belongs to our department head Max, who keeps it in his office along with other dorky items, and the backdrop is a chromolithographic page spread from our copy of Bilder-Atlas der Sternenwelt, published in Esslingen bei Stuttgart by J. F. Schreiber in 1888. Photoshop credit goes to our department manager Alice.
THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE

I think just the fact that we are getting more of Daisy in Star Wars outweighs the excitement of a New Jedi Order?! I’m not saying that all NEW characters under the tutelage of Rey wouldn’t be awesome(if handled right), but just having her back is enough for me(and the possibility of Adam coming back). I know they would want that to be a secret, but it’s killing me NOT KNOWING!!!

Most people aspire to noble actions, but only in theory. When faced with the challenge of implementing their convictions, they shrink from them, becoming pragmatic rather than idealistic.

REVIEW: DUNE HOUSE HARKONNEN #6 (OF 12)
I think I’ve heard about Dune ever since I was a young child. Whether it was hearing about the books or the movies, never did I think that there were also comics about it. Still to this day, however, I am not sure of what Dune really is. With that in mind, I don’t know what to make of the latest issue of the series. It was beautifully illustrated and the colors were also outstanding, but yet the…

I read War Of The Worlds: Global Dispatches edited by Kevin J. Anderson
So this book sort of came out of nowhere for me and it was hard to find. I only got a paper pack edition and there's an audiobook on Audible.
It's an anthology of stories about places other than Great Britain where Martians fought humans, but it's not World War Z or The Sandman, a collection of stories in an universe, creating one overall theme. It's like those Looney Tunes compilation movies like Duffy Duck's Fantasy Island or Bugs Bunny Superstar. It's a bunch of stories written from different authors and different years (most from 1996 and I think they were first published in a Science Fiction zine) and there's no real connection other than 'Humans from here had to deal with the Martians'. There's a foreword that hand waves this but honestly there's John Carter From Mars story here so yeah, I don't believe they fit together. They are interesting though.
The ones that I liked the most are The Roosevelt Dispatches, Foreign Devils, Night of the Cooters, Determinism and the Martian War, with Relative Corrections (Albert Einstein is the main character, Soldier of the Queen, Mars Homefront (the John Carter one), A Letter From St Louis, Resurrection, Paris Conquers All, and To See The World End.
So yeah, I enjoyed it. At least more than the last War of the Worlds inspired works (Martian Chronicles disappointed me and The Martian War frustrated me, and I am not going back to League of Extraordinary Gentlemen).

I’ve not been keeping my Tumblr up to date with my reading exploits since Sordaneon. Besides two short stories I’ve gone through the original Dune saga. I was less enchanted then when I read these as a teen. Less enamoured with Duncan Idaho too though he’s the reason I picked up the sequels. Still fascinated with Leto The God Emperor though.
The two sequels ... so many hours of my life I’m never going to get back. The storylines were promising, but gawd, so badly written.
