LES MIS RETELLING — “THE COURT OF MIRACLES ” by Kester Grant

Here's the cover of the Polish edition of TCoM, which I spotted in the books sale tent (@jediskijumper , thank you for helping me decide whether I wanted to buy it, even though my miserable heart was almost certain).

Tbh, I like the original cover much better, the Polish one let me down this time (although the map of Paris and the drawings with descriptions of the various Guilds are superb!)

Author, Kester "Kit" Grant commented on this cover by saying that Eponine is jumping like "a tiny angry Batman" lmao (BECAUSE, YES, IT'S EPONINE!!)

I was confused and it wasn't until I glanced at the wrapper at the end of the book that I realised it was actually.... fanfic for Les Mis?

On the back cover there is the name Nina Thénardier (ofc Éponine, our beloved main character) and Ettie (Cosette!). Cute nicknames, but Éponine seems dangerous and menacing, I think? I'll write about it in the next post. She could punch Marius in his face and eat him alive.

This book is so good that I will keep sharing excerpts of it, or rather my impressions.

I will write more about the plot (without spoilers, of course), so stay tuned!!

Ok so. The Court of Miracles by Kester Grant. (Spoilers for book 1)

I started reading that book on Barricade Day, because of course I did, and finished it today, and alright.

It's a solid YA book with an antiheroic protagonist. Alright, I'm game, I always eat that shit right up.

But. BUT. It's also a Les Mis retelling. And I have a few things to say about that.

It's in an alternative timeline where the french revolution got curbstomped, granted, but it's still full of Les Mis characters.

Valjean being a member of the Guild of Letters was a meh decision for me. I get how it cropped up, but the entire Court are supposed to be criminals, and I feel like it kind of spits in the face of Valjean's character as a good man who commited a minor crime in his youth and gets lifelong punishment.

Javert being a woman in this was also meh for me. If the sole reason behind this was for that romantic past with Valjean to exist, then I'm also disappointed.

Nina was just perfect. She can rob me anytime. Ettie as well.

Enjolras, or St. Juste, was fine, though I'm still not sure what his deal is. Is he in love with Nina? Is everyone in love with Nina? I kind of wanted more interactions with Grantaire. Fingers crossed for Enjoltaire in the sequels, though Javert's genderbending does not give me high hopes. (Also, the lack of Courf and Ferre annoyed me a bit tbh).

There is no Marius. If the prince is supposed to be a stand-in for him (another innocent Eponine/Nina falls for), then I thought the execution was a bit poor, since Marius never really gave a thought to Eponine, and the prince seems in love with Nina.

Montparnasse pls murder me. And I'm rooting for him and Nina to end up together. I mean, his little speech at the end of the book? I want what they have. Gimme Master of Knives x Master of Beasts, or whatever Nina will be by the next book.

And I want to see more of this history! We're talking 40 years of diverging from our own timeline! How was the last Guild War? Have there been any other minor revolutions, such as the July revolution of 1830? How did Napoleon get his foot in the door if there was no grand revolution to replace familial ties with merit? And who was the man who died in Marat/Orso's stead? Will this play into the plot somehow, either with descendants of the man who took his place joining the MCs, or with the prolonged survival of one of the icons of the failed revolution becoming relevant?

I really want the sequel guys.

“yes, dear?”

you beam at your husband as he looks up from the array of tea leaves on the kitchen counter to give you his utmost attention. like an excited puppy, you bound over to his side and grins up at him before pointing towards your lips. his hand promptly settles onto your cheek lightly, amber eyes examining your face before they widen slightly in realization.

“a new lipstick?”

“mhm! does it look okay?”

“it looks perfect on you, darling.”

“thank you, but get this! it’s not just the normal lipstick!” you make a show of kissing the back of your palm and showing the clean skin afterward, “ta-da! it’s non-transferable, non-smudge, and waterproof! the merchant said it’s a new invention from sumeru!!”

zhongli nods sagely, an impressed look lighting up his expression before it falls into a solemn, thoughtful look. you catch onto his worry almost immediately and instinctively wiggle your pointer finger with a reassuring smile.

“oh, don’t worry! i’ve interrogated the seller about the ingredients, and she was, in fact, very knowledgeable about the process of the creation! i suppose everyone else had the same thought after hearing about such an invention, and they were also worried about toxic chemicals being used or if there were any side effects that developed in order to make such a thing possible, but rest assured, i’ve memorized everything and researched beforehand, so i can confidently say tha- mm?!”

both your body and your brain freeze when you feel your husband’s soft lips descend unto your pigmented ones. the surprise is soon taken by excitement as you dazedly grant him entry, head tilting to slot your lips better, arms instinctively pulling him closer just as one of his hand rest against your nape. he smells - and tastes - like tea; something with a sweet undertone to it, refreshing and light, you suspect it’s a new blend of his, considering the batches of tea leaves sitting on separate bowls on the counter you briefly saw as you walked in earlier. you wonder how long it would take for this one to brew, so it can achieve the ‘full flavor’, as your resident tea-fanatic husband always says. it would definitely be longer than the kiss you share - though when he pulls away it still leaves you breathless nonetheless.

eyes half-lidded, head pleasantly buzzing and dopamine swimming in your veins, you’re silent as the hand resting on your cheek shifts, his thumb sweeping the bottom of your lips towards the side.

a disappointed frown and a slight pout grace his handsome face, and you're tempted to laugh at the adorableness of it all.

“hmm. a shame. it truly does not smudge.”

SHOPPING WITH KAEYA!!!

Liyue is a nation known for its abundant mines full of precious ores and its prosperous trade. the silk flower, which is a local speciality, known for its ability to produce silky-smooth fabric benefits the nation's textile industry tremendously. due to these reasons kaeya chooses the nation to be the destination for your little shopping trip.

kaeya does enjoy giving you gifts. other than physical touch and words of affirmation, gift giving is also one of his love languages. he often comes home with little trinkets or clothing items to suprise you. so, the fact that he's going to pay for everything is already established before you enter one of the well known textile shops in liyue. he's glad that the past few days spent by filling up paperwork continuously is finally worth it.

you'll hear him click his tongue in a rather disapproving tone when you stray away from the clothes you obviously like because of how expensive they are. he places them back into your hands and encourages you to try them on with a kiss while casually dismissing the employee who arrives to assist you with his smooth talk. he thinks that there is no need for someone else to help you when your lover is right there with you.

his teasing nature makes its appearance again as both of you enter the private dressing room. hands wander up and down your waist and squeeze your hips as he helps you tie up any loose strings and adjust the clothing over your body. he can't help but leave kisses on the nape of your neck and lean over, with his lips brushing the shell of your ear to praise about how good you look with a low and sultry tone to his voice.

"kae...it tickles.." you whine as he nuzzles his face further into neck to leave light kisses there while grabbing your waist to pull you more closer to him, if that was even possible.

"just a few more darling, you look too good for me to not savour you"

SIGHTSEEING WITH WANDERER!!!

After his confrontation with the traveler and gaining an anemo vision, lesser lord kusanali grants him a chance for a proper closure he truly desired and also the time to heal himself, which he utilizes by traveling across the vast nation of sumeru. he has seen all kinds of things and met all kinds of people but they hold no value when compared with you. no matter how far his journey takes him, he always returns to the loving home he shares with you, just as promised.

wanderer does remember the way you mentioned your wish of wanting to watch the sunset with him. he never understood why sunsets were mesmerizing to mortals until the lesser lord explained how they can be both romantic and healing to witness and advised him to take you out to watch them one day as a date. even though he made a snide remark about how cliché all of it was, the thought of sitting side with you to witness the nightfall did fluster him

with some much needed encouragement from the lesser lord, he shows up at your doorstep with a small picnic basket saying that he wanted to take you somewhere, eyes wandering all over the place but never making contact with yours. he holds your hand throughout the journey and tightens his grip if he feels like you're about to let go. you find yourself standing at below one of the fluorescent mushrooms in the mawtiyima forest with him when he declares that the both of you have reached the destination he desired

with the help of his vision, he gently settles you down on top of the giant mushroom and takes his place beside you to finally confess that he desired to watch the sunset with you too. a faint blush spreads across his cheeks as you lean your head on his shoulder while watching the sun slowly dissappear behind the horizon and puts his own head on top of yours in response. the evening was rather peaceful, with the occasional banter shared between the both of you which made it a rather memorable one

"tch, are you really trying to reward me for my efforts with a mere 'thank you'? his lips curl into a rather smug smirk as you slightly panic. knuckles brush against your jaw to gently lift your face up and bring you closer to him.

"how 'bout a kiss to accompany that, dove?"

SYNOPSIS: It was his spouse's birthday, and he had something special he wanted to give her. Though, maybe it was a little unorthodox for him to give something so... Him.

CW/s: hurt w/o comfort, Tinuvion is Esther's name for Wanderer, takes place post Wanderer travelling and final journey/choice for Esther, Nahida feels bad, damn the title is an absolute irony

NOTE: Happy birthday @mixed-kester :D I wanted to write smth thats tied to the endgame of the idiots(tm). This shit also made me cry while "Like a Dream" started playing so uh. have fun.

The Wanderer always said that he never needed anyone. To him, he always said that he would be fine travelling on his own. However, when he had met her, that line of thinking seem to have changed.

In the past, he has often been cruel as he is to others. Even the traveler would comment on his behavior, trying to dissuade her in 'helping' him when he didn't even want to be helped. However, it seemed like she didn't listen.

It led to him to continue his ways. He had harmed her over and over, his actions, words, and even behavior cutting her like knives. However, each time he did, she strove on.

In a sense of irony, it seemed like she was giving her all to help him. Even if it meant she got little in return.

Years had passed since then, and each time he remembered, he recalled the events that happened after. The stunt he pulled, the way he was broken in multiple parts of 'himself', that year long absence...

... Their wedding, rekindling lost friendships and relationships, and the final graft.

He remembered seeing her in tears as they said their last goodbyes. He remembered himself saying they'd meet again, that even if the him she remembered for so long never returns, their memory will live on.

And in his journey in their 'meeting', he slowly recalled everything. That part of him returned bit by bit, so much so that he went back to Sumeru.

Alas, it was too late.

"... I'm sorry, Wanderer," Nahida answered, the two beings standing over the graves of his late spouses, Kaeya Alberich, Xianyun, and Esther Arkados.

Even adepti were killed. After all, they can't live as long as an actual God, he thought bitterly. Just like humans.

"It's too late. She has said she wanted to stay after you've left, and lived her last years with the two. It's been decades since you came back."

Decades.

He came back on her day of birth... After decades of absence.

He could feel his 'heart', the one laid on her ring finger, beat.

He knows its gone. That ring will only be removed when the corpse has disintegrated, and he knew it was under the ground they were buried on. He had no hope of retrieving it, and yet...

"... I see."

Nahida looked over at the Wanderer, watching the puppet lower his kasa hat and chuckle sadly. She feared that he may see their death as a betrayal like others, but what he did shocked her.

Grabbing the vision that was granted to him, he lifted his hat to grab the dolls he handsewn all those years ago. Carrying them, he went to the middle of their graves and sat down.

"... Can I ask you something, Lesser Lord Kusanali?"

Nahida blinked, her heart dropping in her chest. It was a sinking feeling, like she just knew what was bound to happen. Still, she had to bite the bullet.

"What is it, Wanderer?"

"... Is it possible for someone like me to reunite with my deceased lovers?"

...

The archon looked down, a frown on her face.

"... Perhaps. But is this what you want?"

She looked over at the puppet, watching him nod and smile. It was bitter, so, so bitter. It made her want to tell him not to take this road.

She knew who else would be weeping for his loss.

"Please, end my suffering, Lesser Lord Kusanali."

She knew what would happen if she did that.

"I want to be with my lovers in death for once and for all."

Those puppets he made were all together with his own, and yet she found only grief in its creation. After all, it was the only thing reminding him of what he lost in his journey.

He's no mortal, but the others were. Xianyun isn't, too, but she had died in different circumstances.

"... Are you sure?" she asked, reaching over to his chest. "I will take it away. Are you truly sure, Wanderer?"

He laughs, though the look on his face suggested that he was serious.

"I just want my wandering to end. Is it selfish to ask for such a little thing?" he asked her, closing his eyes while he placed both hands on their graves. "If my lovers die, I'll follow them. It's the least I can do."

It was my gift for her.

...

Nahida took a deep breath and bowed her head.

Then, as swiftly as she could, she yanked the 'gnosis' she made of the puppet. She could see the body of Wanderer flinch and lurch, but it became still, with the tender smile remaining as he stopped breathing.

Holding up the 'gnosis' she made, she watched the vision lose it's power. She didn't knew why, but seeing it reminded her of something so bitter.

Something she experienced before.

"... You two are intertwined by the stars, just like what he said," Nahida muttered, tucking the items away to be kept in Irminsul.

Raising her head, the clouds began to darken. Rainfall was coming, but she knew it was the least of her concerns.

At least now, the four are reunited together. That's what he wanted, after all.

Hello everyone! I’m here to spread some more knowledge about Obakeidoro! And what better way to do that than to make HCs, AUs and Fanfics!

This blog will solely be dedicated to Obakeidoro writings and nothing more. I’m still learning how to write well so any and all feedback will be appreciated!

DISCLAIMER: ORIGINAL CHARACTERS WILL BE USED IN WRITINGS. This is unfortunately because there are still not many characters within Obakeidoro, thusly I have to improvise with the usage of original characters. Every original character being used in a piece will be stated at the heading.

DISCLAIMER 2: SHARLIE AND GOOGLY ARE HAVING THEIR IN GAME NAMES BE TREATED AS NICKNAMES. This is just cause a human being named Googly would be weird, and all characters are being treated as people and would be written as if they had human designs. Googly’s proper name will be Grant, and Sharlie’s proper name will be Salem (these were randomly chosen btw).

DISCLAIMER 3: ALUCARD AND LEON BELMONT WILL BE TREATED AS ORIGINAL CHARACTERS. This is because I really don’t want to do their Castlevania versions an injustice by writing them incorrectly so they will be gifted new identities, characterizations, and personalities. I sincerely apologize for this but I would rather have them be their own individuals than mess up how they’re written in Castlevania. Alucard’s new identity will be Ai (yes I stole this from Identity V's Antiquarian, apologies), and Leon Belmont’s new identity will be Alexus (this was a random idea). Once again, I sincerely apologize for having to do this but I don’t want to make mistakes with their Castlevania characters, sorry!
