#BlackResistance
The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) summarizes this year’s theme “Black Resistance” as follows: "African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms... These efforts have been to advocate for a dignified self-determined life in a just democratic society in the United States and beyond the United States political jurisdiction… This is a call to everyone, inside and outside the academy, to study the history of Black Americans’ responses to establish safe spaces, where Black life can be sustained, fortified, and respected. "
By resisting, Black people have achieved triumphs, successes, and progress. Black artists, along with other creatives, employ various media to tell stories and create change.
Here is another stack of books that celebrate Black artists whose work resists the status quo, challenges the system, and calls for awareness of the myriad of issues affecting Black people’s lives.

✊🏿#ArtIsAWeapon #Artwork: Portrait of Nat Turner with the Head of his Master, 2011 #Artist: @kerryjamesmarshs #KerryJamesMarshall VIA @eji_org On this day in history - Nov 11, 1831 - Nat Turner was Hanged; Hundreds of Black People Later Killed By White Mobs Angry About Slave Revolt On November 11, 1831, after a rushed trial and conviction, an enslaved Black man named Nat Turner was hanged in Jerusalem, Virginia, after being convicted of leading a revolt against his enslavers. On August 21, 1831, Mr. Turner led a group of Black people in a revolt against slavery. Other enslaved Black people joined the uprising and Mr. Turner's troops grew to 60 to 70 people who fought white enslavers before being defeated by a militia. Many of Mr. Turner's followers were killed or captured immediately but Mr. Turner escaped and evaded searchers for weeks before being captured on October 30, 1831. Enslavers and defenders of slavery throughout Virginia wanted Nat Turner and all who participated in the revolt harshly punished as an example to others who might be inspired by his efforts. At least 18 Black participants in the uprising were executed along with Nat Turner. Inspired by a random basquiat piece, I decided to replace elements of the painting with my own objects while retaining the original symmetry between objects in the original paitning.
I would classify this as #PopSurrealism

Lu // Kerry James Marshall // PAST TIMES
Dein Lu

📸Images 2&3, and caption reposted from @nmaahc #OnThisDay [August 21] in 1831, Nat Turner led a rebellion of enslaved people in Southampton County, Virginia. This early rebellion and resistance represented a deep yearning enslaved Black Americans had towards freedom from slavery and deliverance from the persistent presence of racism.
Born in enslaved in 1800, Turner believed he was called by God to deliver his people from slavery. He used his talent as a preacher and radical orator to convince others to join his revolt. The group of rebels marched throughout Southampton County killing at least 55 people, including his master’s family, until authorities crushed the revolt. Turner avoided capture for nearly 2 months before he was caught tried in the Southampton County Court and hanged on November 11, 1831. Turner’s revolt sent shockwaves throughout the South, as many began to fear the possibility of future slave revolts and violent rebellion. In retaliation, many state and local governments throughout the South passed laws restricting enslaved people’s lives in response to Nat Turner’s rebellion.
During the colonial period, anti-slavery practices from rebellions, abolitionist oration, metaphorical literature, and more, provided African Americans with the means to navigate oppression, emboldening them to create cultural heroes and figurative spaces of community and empowerment.
