Alright. Let’s give this a shot.
SPOILER-Y DISCUSSION OF CAPTAIN MARVEL, INCOMING:
I figure the best way to do this is chronological; my prior attempts have not been chronological, which might account for their feeling a little...all over the place and unorganized.
This will also be a good test to see how much of the film I remember.
RIGHT THEN: First and foremost, (and we gleaned this from the trailers, obviously) MEMORY-LOSS PLOT. Which is Classic Carol™. She’s lost her memory like. Four times.
(her poor brain D:)
All of this to say: The premise of the movie, a kind of reverse origin story in which Carol figures out who she is, in a very literal but also figurative sense, was a great way to go, IMO.
Love all the moments from Carol’s past. I was admittedly surprised that we didn’t get more of that? But what was there was effective and given the amount of ground the movie had to cover, I think it was sufficient.
So after the dreams** we get the early morning fight with Yon-Rogg (who I was absolutely certain was Yon-Rogg, in spite of all the back and forth speculation and Marvel attempting to ‘hide’ his identity) and there’s exposition, obviously, and the set up of Carol’s struggle with Yon-Rogg’s forced Kree values clashing with Carol’s humanity but MORE importantly...
PHOTON BLASTS.
Love the way they render the energy pulsing just below the surface of her skin. Looks so cool.
Then: Chit Chat Time with The Great Intelligence!
I thought for sure it was gonna be Helen Cobb.
BOY WAS I MISTAKEN. (More on that in a sec.)
Favorite Visual #1: The slow pan of Starforce and the excellent shot of Carol’s helmet as they swim to shore on Torfa.
The whole rescue mission sequence/Carol’s kidnapping is...Truly a Highlight, in my opinion.
I mean!
She’s running around the enemy ship! Without her boots! Pummeling the Skrulls with unwieldy metal shackles! And growling in their faces!
#BOSSOFSPACE
Also, comic connection alert: Carol was kidnapped and experimented on by the Brood, which resulted in her stint as Binary.
So, back to the movie:
Talos man.
TALOS.
We’ll get to him later.
Okay what month of 1995 does Captain Marvel take place in? Because I was honestly offended that no one, and I mean NO ONE made a Buzz Lightyear joke re: Carol’s outfit and being a member of STARCOMMANDFORCE who checks her wrist communicator to try and make contact.
(Toy Story came out in November so if this takes place in the summer I GUESS I will let it slide.)
But otherwise dug all of the 90s references.
The little Gameboy sound when she calls Yon-Rogg!
(Also, train chase was great but I’m trying to save time though I do feel inclined to mention Kelly Sue DeConnick! Bringing some quality side eye! Very nice.)
Young Fury + Carol = excellent buddy cop combo, 14/10 would take an entire spinoff of their wacky 90s road trip adventures.
‘You look like someone’s disaffected niece’ might be favorite line in the film.
Let’s pause for a moment and appreciate the score, shall we? Pinar Toprak CRUSHES IT; the Captain Marvel theme feels like something out of The Rocketeer but with about 400% more sci-fi synth and I LOVE IT.
**Love the piece of score played when Carol wakes up. (Appropriately titled “Waking Up” I think, on the soundtrack.)
I also like the songs they picked for the movie? This is probably the complaint I’ve seen most often, that they feel obvious and easy, but. I dunno. I was never expecting something like Guardians of the Galaxy? So I wasn’t mad about it.
(In related news, I’ve been listening to “Connection” on repeat ever since the special look trailer dropped.)
Anyways.
GOOSE.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE.
MY GOOD FLERKEN GIRL.
(So, yes, breezing past the bar interrogation--though I do like the ghostly images of Carol’s past that crop up--as well as the trip to Pegasus, again in the interest of time.)
(WAIT. NO. THE TAPE JOKE.)
(Okay for real. Moving on.)
So then. THEN.
The Rambeaus. And the feelings.
Unpopular(?) opinion: I love that this big budget action movie focuses on female friendships and platonic relationships instead of romance THERE I SAID IT
ALSO LIEUTENANT TROUBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I spelled Lieutenant right on the first try. Just sayin’.
But in all seriousness, I love the time we spend in Louisiana. We get a lot of good stuff. Carol getting answers from Maria, Talos arriving with his soda (milkshake?) The standoff with Goose.
(Oh, and how could I forget Maria bidding farewell to the neighbor, shutting the front door as Carol continues to glower???)
‘What’s happening?’ ‘It’s loading.’ XD
Favorite Visual #2 (Chronologically, but actually the one I like best in the movie) The Pysche-Magnitron Light Speed Engine explosion.
(Thank you, Marvel, for changing it to ‘light speed engine,’ which is much easier to spell than Psyche-Magnitron)
But yeah, that was the visual that sold me, in the earliest trailer. I wish I had some profound reason for that, but the truth is I just love blue-glow-y stuff.
BUT ALSO
(And, okay, an additional spoiler- warning because this is a big one. Like. Big.)
...................................................................
...................................................................
...................................................................
Seriously, go away if you haven’t seen the movie yet.
................................................................................................................................
MAR-VELL iS A WOMAN
LIKE THIS WHOLE TIME. EVERYONE WAS SO FOCUSED ON JUDE LAW. And then there was that blip, right before the release, when Annette Bening revealed she was the Great Intelligence, again after months of secrecy so we were all like, HA we know the TWIST.
BUT NO. NO WE DID NOT.
Well played, Marvel. Well played.
This was something I was thinking about before the film came out; I just kind of assumed, because of the lack of an apparent ‘Mar-Vell,’ that Carol would be the first and only Captain Marvel in the MCU. And she basically is, b/c we have no indication that Dr. Larson was moonlighting as a superhero, but regardless this is SO COOL. SUCH A GOOD TWIST.
(A quick Google search on how many ‘L’s are in Mar-Vell led to a serendipitous discovery: an article on the gender swap decision, and apparently it came very late in the game. Like. ‘Already looking at guys to play Mar-Vell’ late in the game. *insert themoreyouknow.gif here*)
Right, okay, back to Feelings:
When Carol’s like: You don’t know who I am! I don’t know who I am!
I was. Emotional.
(Brie Larson is perfectly cast and does a wonderful job.)
Maria’s pep talk? Also caused emotions.
And Maria got to come on the mission! I was pleasantly surprised, and really glad that the visit there wasn’t like. Just a pit stop, you know?
RIP Science Guy, we hardly knew ye.
Again, jumping ahead, but may I just say: It was truly an Experience, watching this movie with folks who had no idea what a ‘Flerken’ was.
Both my friends at the first screening I attended, and then like. Half the theater at the second one. XD
The whole row was like: WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT when the tentacles came out.
So yeah, Talos and the 180 on the REAL villains: Nice. The enduring complaint leveled at the MCU is a lack of compelling villains. (I guess Talos technically doesn’t count as a villain by the end of this, but. We’re going with it.) And Carol’s commitment to helping the Skrull refugees lifts plot elements from my favorite portion of the DeConnick run, so. YEP. LOVED IT.
(I was also trying to determine if Talos’ daughter was perhaps meant to be like. a Tic expy. Did it say ‘Tic’ on the pinball machine? Or ‘Tig’? Or something else entirely?)
Loved the...mind prison? sequence. All of it. “Come as You Are,” the Great Intelligence rockin’ out in the jacket, Carol’s Big Damn Hero moment. Brilliant. Spectacular. Amazing.
“My name is Carol.”
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS
(Or does she say her full name? I can’t remember.)
And then the subsequent fight scene where Carol’s like. Simultaneously kicking butt but also enjoying all this newfound power/strength? A+++++
Favorite Visual #3: Carol sitting on the railing with the lunchbox.
Sad to see Minn-Erva go, but. Was so cool that Maria gets her own hero moment.
And then this big ol’ fight scene where Carol DESTROYS SPACESHIPS WITH HER BARE HANDS.
Favorite Visual #4: Carol going Binary in the red, blue, and yellow suit with the helmet FLYING THROUGH SPACE, LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT.
All of the visuals from this portion are so on point it’s like they’re pulled straight from the comics.
Favorite Visual #5: When Carol’s staring down Ronan and she like. Does that thing, where you hit your palm with your fist? (IDK the technical term there) And there’s this awesome energy burst and AGAIN, BLUE GLOW-Y THINGS. I love.
I’m pretty sure there’s an interview where Brie Larson talked about watching Indiana Jones? And wanting to be the female equivalent of that.
WELL, that’s the movie I immediately thought of when Carol blasted Yon-Rogg into a boulder, mid-goading.
(Y’know, like the scene in Raiders where Harrison Ford was too sick/tired to do the fight choreography, so he just. Shot the bad guy.)
ALSO, when she drags his sorry butt across the desert? I was IMMEDIATELY reminded of Kara dragging Astra into the DEO.
DANVERS GIIIIRRRRRRRRRRLLLLLS
*ahem*
THE FAMILY DINNER AT THE END?????
LITERAL FOUND FAMILY OF ALIENS AND SOLDIERS AND SUPERHEROES JUST. HAVING DINNER. PLAYING UNO. WASHING DISHES AND SINGING "PLEASE MR. POSTMAN”?
Thank you, Marvel, for this beautiful gen fic material.
WHOOPS I forgot the costume colors bit. (Admittedly confused it with the ending wherein Monica gives Carol her jacket back. Sans ketchup stain.)
So backtracking ever-so-slightly...
Let’s see if I remember this right: We get
Red and gold (Binary send-up, possibly? Or maybe the original Ms. Marvel costume?)
IDK what to call it....Lite-Brite? (♪ makin’ thi-ings with lii-iii-ight ♫)
Black and Gold (bathing suit costume?)
White and Green (original Mar-Vel/Kree colors)
That last one’s the only one that’s like. Obvious and deliberate. I’m just guessing with the others.
BUT CLEARLY I am ABSOLUTELY ONTO SOMETHING with the Lite-Brite.
BACK TO THE ENDING Lt. Trouble gives Carol her jacket and that’s my fav look, out of all the costume variations we see in the movie. I mean. I love the black and green, admittedly, and the helmet looks SO GOOD for being something that should be ridiculous, but my go-to answer for superhero costume design is: add a leather jacket.
Favorite Visual #6: Carol in the suit and flight jacket, floating above Earth, ready to go save the day.
AND THEN SHE’S OFF.
Ooooh, ooooooooh, but we can’t forget the scene. The scene that I’m certain ticked off The Continuity Police. (You know the types.)
See, remember when Marvel was like, ‘Carol’s the first Avenger!’ and haters were like, ‘UH HELLO IT’S STEVE????!????’
And then Marvel was like, oh ho ho ho, we meant LITERALLY the ENTIRE INITIATIVE IS NAMED AFTER HER CALL SIGN AND SHIELD STARTS LOOKING FOR SUPERHEROES BECAUSE OF HER ERGO SHE IS THE FIRST die mad about it.
That was so very, very satisfying to see.
(Also I guess she’s a literal Captain in the air force? If the rank on the jet is legit. Pretty sure she’s a Major in the comics, though. But I assume this change is to help sell the ‘Captain Marvel’ name.)
And then, friends. And then.
I was fully prepared to leave the theater, uncertain of when we’d next see Carol.
EVEN AS THE MID CREDITS SCENE PLAYED. I was like. ‘Well, they’re gonna cut it off before we can see anythINOHMaNTHERESHEIS!!!!!!’
‘Where’s Fury.’
*insert aesthetically pleasing keyboard smash here*
BRING ON ENDGAME.
And before we wrap up here, one final note:
The Space Stone, sought after by Trickster Gods and Mad Titans alike, was for a brief time, nothing more than a glorified furball.
FIN
(Nope, wait. One little anecdote before we go: of my core group of buddies, I am the Comics Nerd, and thus I am often consulted after we’ve watched a Marvel movie. So I had to explain that YES, Kara Danvers had the last name Danvers first, but she was adopted, and her GIVEN fake name was Linda Lee, so in all fairness, the same-name thing is a little less plagiarize-y, b/c ‘Linda Lee Danvers’ does not necessarily match up as well as ‘Kara Danvers’--which wasn’t even used until really recently--to ‘Carol Danvers’. ...Honestly, I was just really happy they called out the connection MY WORK HAS NOT BEEN IN VAIN XD )
Also, I sometimes get replies on posts like this which is totally fine BUT, I would ask that folks keep really spoiler-y stuff out of ‘em. At least for a little while.

Comics I NEED To Read in 2020
Tumblr media
One of my goals for 2020 is to read more comics and graphic novels. I really liked all the comics I read last year and would love to broaden my horizons and discover new favourite authors and artists. Buckle in folks because this list is long.
· MS. MARVEL: NO NORMAL ·
Tumblr media
G. Willow Wilson’s Ms. Marvel is probably one of the most popular comics of the last few years. I read the first issue of this run a couple years back and would love to read more because I remember it being super fun.
· THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL: SQUIRREL POWER ·
Tumblr media
I have no idea what to expect from Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. If the cover is to be believed it’s going to be super cute and super fun and I’m totally down for that.
· RUNAWAYS: PRIDE AND JOY ·
Tumblr media
I really want to read Rainbow Rowell’s Runaways run but given that Brian K. Vaughan’s original run only came out in 2005 I thought I might as well start at the beginning.
· THOR: THE GODDESS OF THUNDER ·
Tumblr media
Jason Aaron’s Thor is iconic at this point and I really want to see what all the fuss is about. I’d love to have read at least a few volumes of this by the time the next Thor movie comes out because I suspect it will be heavily influenced by this series.
· AMERICA: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF AMERICA CHAVEZ ·
Tumblr media
I don’t know much about America Chavez but I do know that this comic was really popular on Tumblr around its release and it doesn’t take much for me to give a comic a chance.
· HAWKEYE: ANCHOR POINTS ·
Tumblr media
Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye is probably one of my favorite comics and Kate Bishop was a standout character. I’m excited to read her solo series especially because it’s written by Kelly Thompson and I loved her work on A-Force.
· ALIAS: VOL 1 ·
Tumblr media
Jessica Jones was my favorite Marvel Netflix show and I’m really excited to see her origin in the comics. I’m sure this comic is iconic for a reason and I’m sure I’ll love it.
· SHE-HULK: DECONSTRUCTED ·
Tumblr media
I don’t know why, but I think I’m going to absolutely love Mariko Tamaki’s work. Ever since I read A-Force I’ve wanted to pick up more She-Hulk stories and this seems like as good a place to start as any.
· CAPTAIN MARVEL: HIGHER, FURTHER, FASTER, MORE ·
Tumblr media
I read a few issues (possibly even the first arc) of Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Captain Marvel run years ago and loved it. I’m ready to dive deep into the Captain Marvel franchise because I’m sure I’ll love it.
· SPIDER–GWEN: MOST WANTED ·
Tumblr media
Spider-Gwen had probably the best story in the Into the Spider-Verse comic which I read last April and I was most excited to read more about her. I’m sure I’m going like wherever Jason Latour takes Gwen’s story.
· GWENPOOL, THE UNBELIEVABLE: BELIEVE IT ·
Tumblr media
The extremely mixed response to the current run of Gwenpool made me really interested in picking up this original run. If the cover reflects the content of this comic I’m sure it’s going to be a wild ride.
· STAR WARS: DOCTOR APHRA ·
Tumblr media
Naturally, my all-consuming love of Star Wars will bleed into my comic reading, so I decided to start with Doctor Aphra. Kieron Gillen, like Mariko Tamaki, just feels like an author I’ll love so I decided to start with his work for the Marvel-Star Wars franchise.
· BATWOMAN: THE MANY ARMS OF DEATH ·
Tumblr media
I’ll admit a good 50% of why I want to pick up this run of Batwoman is the gorgeous cover but given that this is a comic I think judging a book by its cover is fair in this instance. The other reason I want to pick it up is that I loved Marguerite Bennett’s work on A-Force and would love to see what else she can do.
· ALL-STAR SUPERMAN ·
Tumblr media
I am almost certain I’m going to adore All-Star Superman. For one, I watched a YouTube video about this comic and ended up bawling my eyes out so I’m pretty sure Morrison and Quitely are going to hit me right in the feels.
·SUPERGIRL: BEING SUPER ·
Tumblr media
I’m always one for a good limited run and Being Super really appeals to me. If you can’t already tell I’m captured by the Superman mythos and I’m sure seeing how these god-like figures interacting with the human world will be a good time.
· MISTER MIRACLE ·
Tumblr media
Tom King’s The Vision thoroughly fucked me up last year and I’m ready for him to fuck me up some more in this one. I honestly have no clue what this comic is about (I don’t even know who Mister Miracle is) but because it’s Tom King I’m picking it up anyway.
· FABLES: LEGENDS IN EXILE ·
Tumblr media
This is probably one of the most intimidating comics I’d like to read this year. Fables has so many volumes and spin-off and tie-in novelizations that it’s honestly a bit overwhelming. But it comes highly recommended, so I’m diving straight in no matter my hesitation.
· THE WICKED + THE DIVINE: THE FAUST ACT ·
Tumblr media
I know one or two die-hard fans of The Wicked + The Divine and given that it’s last volume came out in 2019 I’d love to start it this year.
· THE AVANT–GUARDS: VOL 1 ·
Tumblr media
The Avant-Guards is the only contemporary story on this TBR, which says a lot about my tastes in comics, but I think I’m going to enjoy this one. Its diverse cast and the cute art style is probably going to be a fun read.
· THE ADVENTURE ZONE: HERE THERE BE GERBLINS ·
Tumblr media
I fell head over heels in love with The Adventure Zone Podcast in August last year and absolutely have to pick up this comic. I’m certain I will adore this one and am so hyped to spend more time with Magnus, Taako, and Merle.
So, that was my extensive comics TBR for 2020. If I’m being honest there are dozens of more stories I would love to get to in the coming year, but I need to set some realistic goals. If you guys have any comics or graphic novels you’re hoping to get to in the coming year please share them down below cause I’d love to add them to my list.

Captain Marvel spoiler review
Ok. I give up on figuring out the spoiler cut on mobile. If you haven’t seen, please skip this!
Spoilers!
You have probably seen that I have been pretty defensive about Captain Marvel on tumblr. That is because I think she should get the same chance as a male MCU hero, not because i think she is perfect or anything.
One thing I was actively worried about with this film was the origin story. Carol’s origin is weird and complicated. There was an alien named Mar-Vell and he had powers and fought this bad guy. There was a machine called a psyche-magnetron that exploded and gave her powers. At least that is how it goes in the comics. But it is SO dated for her to literally get her powers from a man, especially if Marvel wants her to be their standout female character.
And it’s not easily summed up. To further complicate things, she is of two worlds. She is from Earth but had Kree DNA.
Watching the film, I thought about Thor. The first Thor movie also had two worlds and I liked the parts on Earth best, but the Asgardian world had a distinct look to it. I think Boden/Fleck were a bit hamstrung by the fact that the Kree were somewhat established in Guardians of the Galaxy. You see Hala and think “alien planet” but not like “wow, that is beautiful and different” if that makes sense.
It’s always interesting to see these films with my sister, because she doesn’t read comics or get all obsessed on tumblr like I do. When we got home she was looking at how the MCU films were ranked (not on RottenTomatoes but another similar site) and she was like, “this is wrong. It was better than some of these.”
We agreed immediately that it wasn’t as good as Black Panther. And I think it would be tough to be the first origin story to follow that one, because usually they are a bit wobbly and crammed with backstory. Certainly think it’s on par with other origin stories, like the aforementioned Thor.
I was also worried about Maria and Monica. For those that don’t know, Monica Rambeau is a superhero who was also Captain Marvel and she was before Carol was. She has since changed her name to Spectrum (and Photon, which was Maria’s Air Force call signal) which is confusing.
I wanted Monica in the movie—it felt right since she was Captain Marvel too—but I did not want her to feel like a sidekick, because Carol and Monica don’t have that relationship. I was iffy on “Maria” who is really just a name in the comics, and then Lashana Lynch came into the project late after the first actress dropped out and I was like, “oh no, what happened?” Is the script changing? What is this part?
But I liked Maria a lot. She does feel like “the black friend,” which we have already seen from Iron Man and Captain America: Winter Soldier. But Sam and Rhodey are faves of mine so I am not mad at it exactly. I just want more for characters of color. I was very glad that we got to see Monica do some flying and even take out a Kree of her own (though I was sad about which one it was) because she could have been in Carol’s place that day. Then she would have the crazy powers. Carol just got there first. I thought Lynch did a really good job and is someone to watch.
Plus, I feel there is a bud of hope that young Monica is a future star, not a supporting player. Though I am still worried she comes off a bit more like Kamala Khan than Monica Rambeau (again, neither of these characters are bad they are just different). But Kamala is a star too. Perhaps in the intervening years, Monica will grow into someone more like the character we know. Hopefully. (She would be in her mid-30s during the events of Infinity War.)
I continue to think they were smart to bring Sam Jackson back. You know I have missed him. I talk about it all the time. But here what is so evident is how he grounds a film so well. Like think about all the crazy shit Nick Fury has to make seem real. It’s astounding. I don’t necessarily think that Phil Coulson needed to be there. (In the theater, people cheered when he came on screen and the little boy next to me said, “who is that?” Which reminded me that The Avengers was actually a long time ago and that we are old.)
I read a review that said they wished Carol could retroactively show up in Avengers and, indeed, that does seem to be what the film builds toward. So seeing Carol pop up in the mid-credit sequence was the biggest cheer moment in the film, which maybe doesn’t speak that well of the actual film? I am not sure where I am going with this thought. Except to say it succeeds in that it convinces us there was a hole in the Avengers team this entire time and we didn’t know about it. Which is both cool and a bummer.
As for the cast, they did trick me with Annette Bening. I thought she would be Helen Cobb, Carol’s mentor from the Kelly Sue DeConnick (cameo in the train station! I saw her red hair!) run. Bening just looks like her. And I didn’t see the twist that she was Mar-Vell coming. Though perhaps it was obvious to some.
My sister said she thought Bening was miscast. And that got me wondering if they intentionally cast someone who looked like Helen. Sister said she wished Glenn Close had gotten this role instead of the throwaway in Guardians of the Galaxy. I am always in favor of more Glenn Close and do hope she might be in a “Nova” film because she was sorely wasted.
I think Jude Law is kind of perfect for the possible leading man but is really a dick turn. You almost believe him when he says, “I’m so proud of you.” Between this and Spy, I am starting to wonder if I missed the boat on Jude Law.
My real fave of the Kree was Min-Erva (Gemma Chan) and I really thought she would come back and be the main villain of the sequel so I was kind of devastated when she died. I loved how blunt she was with “I just didn’t like you.” I would love to see a head-to-head with her. Just two very different women.
Everyone loved Goose. I am still sad they didn’t call her Chewie. The biggest cliffhanger is WHAT HAPPENED TO GOOSE. Did she did? Do Flerken age like cats do? Has she just been in Nick Fury’s office all this time? No, she can’t be. She wasn’t in Winter Soldier.
Maybe she bailed after coughing up the Tesseract (which I did not know was going to be in this film at all. I thought Howard Stark found it and that was how it got to SHIELD. I think that makes Howard even lamer?) and she went to find Monica? I would love it if Carol comes back and Monica is like “bitch, where have you been? Your cat peed on my laundry.” (And somehow led Monica on adventures that gave her her own superpowers? A girl can dream.)
We need to cast someone awesome as adult Monica. I have been looking through IMDb. It’s a sickness. I like Spectrum. I like all lady heroes. We still need MORE.
Do you hear me, dumb fanboys? We were not done with female superheroes after Wonder Woman. We were not done after Jessica Jones. We are not done after Captain Marvel. And guess what, we will not be done after Black Widow either, so stop acting like babies and just get the fuck out of the way.
Because if you try to pull the shit that you pulled about this movie with Monica or Kamala or Storm? We will have to kill you. Full stop.
FINAL THOUGHT: Goose can hold the Tesseract. Red Skull died holding the Tesseract. Red Skull founded Hydra. Hydra was part of the Nazi Party. Goose is stronger than Nazis.
This is science.

Note
001: MCU fandom, 002: Peter Quill / Gamora, 003: Carol Danvers. Choose one or do all three if you want :)
i’m gonna do all three! thank you for this 😎
001 | MCU
Favorite character: This is extremely hard, but it’s a three-way tie between Gamora, Peter Quill, and Carol Danvers at this point.
Least Favorite character: Thanos because he’s a dumb bitch. Runners up include: Bucky Barnes, Clint Barton
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Peter/Gamora, T’Challa/Nakia, Tony/Pepper, Scott/Hope, Carol/Maria
Character I find most attractive: Honestly, most of the women could step on me and I’d say thank you
Character I would marry: Gamora or Carol
Character I would be best friends with: Peter Quill
a random thought: Black Panther legitimately deserved Best Picture, you guys just hate genre film
An unpopular opinion: I’m really excited to see where the MCU goes after Avengers: Endgame, and I’m actually looking forward to getting it over with, in a way, so that we can just move on and start getting to new stuff. (Frankly, the MCU has introduced a lot more interesting characters since the Avengers, and I’m just ready for that spotlight to leave them and go onto other people.) I’m also looking forward to getting it over with because most of my faves have been dead for the past year, and I’m tired of this holding pattern.
My Canon OTP: Peter/Gamora
My Non-canon OTP: Carol/Maria is technically not canon even though they totally are canon, if you get my drift, but I guess they’ll go here
Most Badass Character: This title belongs to Gamora, because she has overcome so much and gotten so far to reclaim her own personhood… and if Marvel Studios doesn’t let her walk off into the proverbial sunset after this bullshit, we’re going to have some words
Most Epic Villain: Killmonger
Pairing I am not a fan of: Bruce/Natasha, because yikes, and Steve/Peggy, because this fandom made me tired of it
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): I feel like Natasha and Wanda have both suffered from writers not really knowing what to do with them over the course of multiple movies. The only movie where Natasha actually had good development and a character arc was CATWS, and Wanda hasn’t even had that.
Favourite Friendship: All the Guardians
Character I most identify with: Peter Quill, like fucking whoa
Character I wish I could be: Carol; I want her powers
002 | Peter Quill/Gamora
When I started shipping them: I liked the idea of them at the end of Vol 1, but I didn’t really start shipping them as deeply as I do until Vol 2
My thoughts: Best MCU ship by far. Yeah, even over Tony/Pepper and all that; I said what I said, y’all. Their development was slow and realistic, never felt rushed, and I actually bought this dynamic, both in terms of the writing and the actor chemistry (which is high praise coming from me, because I don’t tend to buy a lot of ships in movies). Their personalities complement each other, and it makes a lot of sense as to why they’re drawn to one another. Honestly, I love them – I don’t know what else there is to say. They have my heart and they’re my life.
What makes me happy about them: People who can come together and find some healing/peace in one another is, like, my jam, and they just mash all of my buttons in this regard.
What makes me sad about them: Infinity War. Just… Infinity War.
Things done in fanfic that annoys me: A lot of this is, like, characterization stuff, but I get bothered by portrayals of Gamora as some kind of untouchable ice queen and Peter as someone who’s super 100% open and acts constantly like a hyperactive five-year-old on a sugar high. The nuance with this ship is that they’re both adults still struggling with the effects of sustained childhood trauma, and opening up is going to be hard for both of them – they both have their hard edges, but also really soft hearts. I also hate when people portray Peter as some kind of dumbass against Gamora being untouchably hypercompetent; that’s also not really true of either of them, you know? Look at the characters, stop going with the tropes.
Things I look for in fanfic: Anything that gives me that character/dynamic nuance I just mentioned; I love that stuff. These are two characters who both have a lot to heal from, and I love the stories that showcase them healing together. I have a soft spot for dumb/comedic misadventures, as well as heartwarming family stories, and I love me the occasional angst piece too, but if you’ve got the nuance, I’m good.
My wishlist: Honestly, everything? This is the one ship I literally never get tired of. Which reminds me that I have some more stuff to write, too… my work schedule lately has just not been conducive.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: In MCU-verse, honestly no one; they’re serious at this point, and I just don’t see it happening with anyone else. If we’re talking comics-verse, I actually ship both of them with Rich Rider (and also the whole thing as an OT3).
My happily ever after for them: Both of them surviving Endgame with the rest of the Guardians, going back to their galaxy-saving gigs for a while, maybe hanging that whole thing up at some point and just having some peace. I also see a bunch of adopted kids in their future; Gamora starts it, when she comes back to the ship one day with this little orphaned girl in her arms, but over time, they end up taking in multiple lost/troubled kids, and it’s equally each of their faults.
003 | Carol Danvers
How I feel about this character: Love her! I’m really, really glad she exists; she’s definitely refreshing in terms of what female characters are allowed to be in comics/comics media, and that’s really reflected in part by how women are allowed to be the custodians of her story (and have been since Kelly Sue DeConnick took over her book in 2012). She’s a lot of qualities that we see in male characters – bold, confident, humorous – and isn’t made to apologize for any of those things. More characters like Carol, please.
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Maria, I can also get on board the Valkyrie ship; in the comics I love her with Rhodey and also Jessica Drew
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Fury, Talos, Goose, Thor (they’re going to be besties, I know it)
My unpopular opinion about this character: Unpopular in some circles I guess, but I actually thought she had good development in Captain Marvel; like, it was a character arc I could track, it seemed cohesive to me, and I don’t think she was flat or boring in any way? But people are gonna people.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Carol better interact with the Guardians in the MCU or else
Favorite friendship for this character: Nick Fury in MCU, Jessica Drew and Tony Stark in the comics
My crossover ship: Diana Prince
send me fandom/ship/character asks!

In the midst of a busy crowd, a half-Kree woman with long curly blonde locks walked around at the SHIELD Headquarters's lobby and heard a slight conversation from SHIELD Agents about SCP-682's bloody massacre somewhere in California for more than twelve hours. Turning her head around, she wanted to join at the conversation, but she was halted in seeing a tall bearded street beggar. He was cladded in a long dirty brown leather coat as he had a dark purple scarf wrapped around his neck. Carol recognized the man, saw his familiar Kree battlesuit underneath the coat, and walked over him.
" Mar- Vell? " she curiously called the Kree street beggar's name, smiled at him in greeting, and placed her hands on her hips. " It's long time, no see. I didn't expect you to come here. "
" It's good to see you again, Carol, " Mar-Vell slightly smiled back at her, hiding his negative emotions towards his old friend. " I just came along with my other friend when the Remnite SHIELD Agents brought us here. "
" You mean Team JNPR? "
" Yeah, they asked me and Xeno to get interrogated with their team leader, Agent Johnson early this morning. She said she needed information from us as we witnessed 682's genocide earlier. It's really taking us a while, but I really need you to hear me out on this one. "
Carol intriguingly cocked her eyebrows as her old friend and mentor had confirmed of the incident. Then, she asked, " It seems you need a very important talk with me. Am I right? "
" That's right, " the homeless pink Kree nodded and moved his head around, feeling uncomfortable in staying at the premise too long. " But not in this crowded place, I don't wanna let them eavesdrop with our conversation here. My greatest granduncle told me it's a serious matter and very strictly confidential. Please promise me to keep it a secret, okay? "
" I will. I know the best place where we can talk privately. "
Note: A sneak peek which Mar-Vell and Carol Danvers meet once again. This scene on Captain Marvel: My Mother Book 2 Chapter 15 has a pose reference to an episode in Avengers Mightiest Heroes.
Flashback chapter to be written soon.
Captain Marvel: Mar-Vell and Carol Danvers belong to Roy Thomas, Gene Colan, Stan Lee, Jim Starlin, Chris Claremont, Kelly Thompson, and Kelly Sue DeConnick.

WisCon Day 3
Sunday, despite being hung over and not going to bed until 4am the night before, I staggered up early enough to catch the end of the 10am panel slot "How Lazy Writing Recreates Oppression." There were some really good thinky panels at that slot, but I knew I wasn't going to be up for anything more than listening to Tempest and Nico and Mark yell about stupid stories and stupid characters, and I was right. It was pretty great though. I did not take notes in this panel, which on reflection is a goddamn shame, but the Twitter hashtag gets a lot of the highlights. (Tempest made Mark blush with her description of the male ejaculation story arc, which alone was worth the price of admission to the entire con.) I needed some vegetables for lunch, so we walked all the way around the square to the remodeled Brocach, which used to be an Irish pub and is now a super-trendy restauraunt that serves a lot of Jaimeson. Food was good, but I can't see going there as often as we used to (even if I were in town). I'd intended to go to the "creating alien sex organs" panel at one, but the general atmosphere in the room beforehand was putting me off just slightly (nothing super offensive, just being a mildly sex-repulsed asexual person means there are some atmospheres I'm not really comfortable in), so I went to a reading instead - "AIs, Wendigos, and other Teenage Worries." Theo Nicole Lorenz read from her YA-novel-in-progress Wendigo Summer, Marianne Kirby read from a story narrated by a ghost who lives in a mall and falls in love with a mannequin (and talked up her Dustbath Revival series, which I then had to go into the dealer's room and purchase), and Naomi Kritzer read from the YA-novel-in-progress followup to her Hugo-award winning story "Cat Pictures, Please," narrated by a teenage girl and by an AI who set up a social network whose price for entry is pictures of cute animals. Because the AI likes cat pictures. Wound up spending more money in the dealer's room, because of course there were many books I was interested in, once I went looking for one, and also Dylan Edwards's feeping creatures are exactly my monster aesthetic (I recommend them to everyone). At 2:30 I went to a panel on Moral Ambiguity in Fiction, which turned out to be the followup to the villains panel I'd been to last year, where we ended up talking about the difference between moral ambiguity and "this person is evil but I'm attracted to them." There was some of that in this panel, too, but also on the difference between a text that is morally ambiguous (like, say, Watchmen, where the ending gives you several options for how to interpret an event but doesn't actually encourage you to lean toward any one of them) and a text that is morally chaotic (where the hero can do whatever he wants because he's the hero, which makes all his actions morally acceptable *coughSGAcough*). There was also some discussion of what kinds of characters are interesting when morally ambiguous (characters who grew up without a moral compass and attempt to build one; characters who do bad things in service of a higher good) and what characters are painted, either by canon or by fanon, as morally ambiguous despite not really deserving a redemption arc (Snape, Loki). (I mean, I might fight you on Loki-in-the-text, but Loki fandom really is the worst sometimes.) Sadly, no one mentioned the next logical step: people whose actions are hardly morally ambiguous but who you have a hard time arguing with anyway (see: The Ballad of Black Tom). Lots of good examples in this panel; check the book list when I get it up. At four I went to another monster panel, which turned out to be a horror panel instead: "When the Monster Isn't the Monster," which despite the panel description turned out to be a lot about how horror works and how it doesn't. Most of what I have written down is an endless list of recommendations, but a lot of the discussion wandered around the general idea of otherness (which is what monsters are about) and ways things get projected onto that and how it's handled. There was a lot of talk about some of the big recent horror movies - The Babadook, It Follows, The Witch - and what exactly their monsters are doing. The most interesting point that was brought up was about universality - while the idea of monsters generally is a universal one, individual monsters are culturally and even personally very specific, which is one reason why American remakes of foreign horror can be so bad. And some stories can't be universalized - Get Out is a movie about the experience of being Black in America, and while it might give white audiences a taste of what that's like, it's not the same thing. (We didn't talk much about Get Out, because the whole panel was white, and I appreciated that. Also, I still haven't seen it, which I need to fix.) After that it was time for dinner and getting ready for the big event! We ran back to Hattie's apartment because she'd accidentally left her dessert ticket there, came back and had Ian's Pizza for dinner, then got all fancy. (Last year I went super-girly to the Dessert Salon, the one semi-formal-if-you-want-to part of WisCon; this year I didn't get to go as butch as I wanted to but I did wear pants and the General Leia vest I'd bought on Friday, which was pretty good). Dessert Salon is always amazing; they have a good pastry chef at the Concourse. Kelly Sue DeConnick gave an amazing speech about taking your place in the pantheon of feminist writers, and about the debt owed by people with privilege to those who have less of it; Amal El-Mohtar gave an amazing speech about being strong enough to be kind, coming together and understanding one another in good faith, and Steven Universe (which I really need to suck it up and watch). The Tiptree award was presented to Anna Marie McLemore for When the Moon Was Ours - and look, the Tiptree ceremony is my absolute favorite award ceremony in all the world. The award is a tiara to wear all weekend, a check, a box of chocolates, and a piece of art inspired by the work (this year a gorgeous glass sculpture), and then we all sing a parody song based on the winning work. "And that's how you present a dignified award," Pat Murphy said when it was all over. It's the best. And then they announced next year's guests of honor, which I have yet to be less than overwhelmingly excited about, but next year it's Tananarive Due!!!!!! and Saladin Ahmed!!!!!! which is incredible, I am so excited, this is going to be amazing. After the celebrations I tried to party again, this time slightly more successful, not least because I've been following Alexandra Erin on twitter for months and had already managed to talk to her on Friday night, so I was much less intimidated. Also, they were doing virgin cocktails, and I was not going to miss a party with virgin cocktails. The party was semi to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of her first major serial, Tales of MU, and mostly to launch her new one, The Secret Sisterhood of Superheroes, featuring realistic elements such as happy queer femme superheroes, and fantasy elements such as competently evil presidents. Everyone read it, it should be great, I got a promotional button with the title of the first chapter, "Only G*sh Can Judge Me." And then I came back to the room and took a shower and went to bed. (Monday and wrap-up thoughts later tonight; hopefully book lists by next Monday.) comments from the wicked king of parody http://ift.tt/2rZetlV via IFTTT

Bookshelf Overload: March 2017
Well then, I managed to acquire a rather large number of books in March. Unexpectedly, most of them weren’t even manga. In part this was due to a bunch of comics that I had previously backed on Kickstarter showing up last month. I can also thank both online retailers and my local comic book store for offering some massive discounts throughout March. (On top of that, I have a tendency to buy books when I’m under stress. Seeing as I’m in the process of transferring from one job to another, there’s been a fair amount of added stress lately, too.) But as for the manga I picked up in March: I was particularly delighted to come across Mitsuru Adachi’s Short Program, which has been out of print for a while now. I also decided to give Kazune Kawahara’s High School Debut a try since I’ve been enjoying My Love Story!! so incredibly much. I was admittedly a little surprised to come across The Secret Devil-chan, Volume 1 by Emu, the first book to be released under Digital Manga’s new PeCChi imprint. The book has actually been available since September I think, but only directly from Digital Manga; I wasn’t sure if any of the publisher’s titles were still being released outside of it’s own web stores. And while 100 Manga Artists isn’t manga it certainly is manga-related. I didn’t realize it at first but it turns out the volume is actually a revised and updated edition of Manga Design which was released back in 2004 (and which I also own). I haven’t had a chance to closely compare the two, but 100 Manga Artists is nevertheless an interesting resource.

13 Ridiculous True Stories Of Cooking Mistakes And Kitchen Screw-Ups
Cooking isn’t for everyone.Even for those of us who claim to be great at it mess up every now and again.
If you’re not careful, the tiniest lapse in judgement can ruin an entire meal, or even worse, end up hurting you or damaging your home! Safety in the kitchen is the first thing you should look out for, always. Saving the soup on the stovetop is not as important as putting out the fire in the oven.
I’m definitely guilty of making very silly mistakes in the kitchen all the time. Right off the bat, I’ve done #1 on this list at least once before. Sometimes when you’re on autopilot early in the morning or after a long day, things happen. I can’t say that I’ve ever come close to setting my kitchen on fire like some of these stories, but I’ve definitely goofed up.
Have you ever done something as ridiculous as the folks on the list below? Hopefullyeverything worked out okay for you in the end, just as it did in all of these stories!
Please SHARE with your family and friends on Facebook to see if they have any funny cooking mistake stories, too!

And more. It never thickens. Instead it turns off-white and slimy.
“I’ve used almost all the flour now, made a mess, and it’s still nowhere near gravy. I tell my wife our flour is obviously defective and take my horrible concoction and dump it.
