Dating Headcanons - Kazuraba Kouta, Kumon Kaito

Warnings: Uh mentions of Kaito’s family, and general pain. I cannot talk about Gaim without being emo as hell. Spoilers for all of Gaim in general actually.

See, I originally was going to post ALL of the headcanons together but I decided to separate em out because I’m suuuper proud of the Kouta and Kaito ones I made. So...enjoy~!

Kazuraba Kouta

First off, not to be a ho but also to be a ho…have you sEEN this man??? Kouta is fucking fit as hell and he knows it. He uses his adept physique to help those around him and with his various part time jobs and all, it’s no wonder that he’s fucking built like a god damn Greek God. Anyway he doesn’t mind showing off to you but there is this fucking shy and sweet little proud flush to his cheeks as he flexes for you. “Do…do you like what you see?” he would question, almost hesitant to fully undress and only gives you hints of his body. But like…listen. You are treated to this visage 25/8 so it’s fuckinG GREAT OKAY???? But if anything, his body is covered in scars because of his fights and jobs so like…please kiss them. He’ll melt and giggle, claiming it tickles but it’s his fave thing!!!!

Kouta is the definition of a vitamin © he’s just full of energy and is always ready to cheer you up. The first thing he does when waking up is to either text you good morning with like the most fucking cringey emojis (an orange included) if you two live apart or with kisses if you two live together! This is mandatory and if neither of these things happen, you will find him being the most fucking pouty little bitch you have ever seen. Mai and Micchy are super quick to point this out, much to his chagrin because (as the eldest of his team members I believe) Kouta tries not to show it. He doesn’t want the others to worry about him much but like he is always looking at his phone longingly, waiting for a text from you or like letting out this longing sort of sighs because he misses you. Mai has you on speed dial, “Come and give your boyfriend a kiss already!! He’s being pouty and we can’t take it anymore!!! D:<” so really, you are also his Vitamin C!!!

Public affection is honestly, rather tame. Kouta always has his hand in yours or an arm wrapped around your body in some fashion. Why not? He loves you so much so of course he would!!!! He tends to swing your hands whenever they’re laced together, oh so cutely.

You always come to his dances whenever you can, even after he had left Team Gaim. It’s because you are close friends with the rest of them and seeing Kouta dance is something else. He’s this…energetic bubble, a beacon of hope - it’s simply magnetic. He draws people towards him like a king that draws people to flock towards him. Kouta has this aura, an energy about him, that makes you never want to look away. Why would you want to look away from him anyway? Lol

Okay, his sister already considers you as part of the family. You two talk all the time and she sends you little texts like, “Is my brother taking care of you well? I’ll chastise him if he isn’t! Just let me know!!! >:D” and it makes Kouta flush and text his sister back with proof that he’s taking good care of you. It’s all in good fun, however, and the three of you become oh so close knit. It hurts even more when Kouta has to leave, and you and Akira become even closer. You two have to cling on to each other for support in times like this. Kouta doesn’t want to leave either of you behind and he visits whenever he can but…it hurts so much.

Kouta is even more protective of you due to the fact you are also an Armored Rider. He has you in the corner of his eye, his back against yours, swords in hand and never letting you out of his sight. He dives in to take hits for you, not because he doesn’t believe in you but because…because he doesn’t want to lose anyone else to this invasion. He lost Yuya and losing you would just break him. So he fights not just for the people around him, but to bring you both home - to a home where you two can be yourselves, a home that you both love. You are his rock, his strength to keep fighting. Before each and every fight you two have, Kouta would kiss you (a peck to the cheek or lips or forehead) and hold you close for a brief second, whispering with a tense yet brightly sunny smile, “Come back safe, got it?” and it’s not a question or a demand…it’s a fucking promise.

It’s no secret that Kouta is often hella busy. Not just with his part time jobs but as a Rider. It’s similar to you as a Rider as well or just because of daily life. You two put your lives on the line no matter what, the Inves Invasion or just otherwise. So time spent with you is important and he will not give it up (unless it’s like an emergency) and I firmly believe that his love language is “time” and “words of affirmation” because Kouta always thinks with his heart first and head later. So dates are always kind of lazy, spur of the moment kind of things. Kouta goes with the flow most of the time and sure you two try to make plans but where is the fun of having a set schedule?! Go for it!!! Have fun with it!!! To Kouta, wherever you are and as long as you two are having fun…it’s a date for him.

Arguments are not often per-say but because Kouta is so fucking gungho to protect the people around him and doesn’t really…regard his own safety, you need to have a serious talk with him. It’s mostly bliss for you two but seeing as this is a very stressful time…it’s going to take some getting used to. The same goes for Kouta, accidentally blurting out things he doesn’t mean to say in the spur of the moment during arguments. He’s not trying to belittle you, he’s just terrified of losing you. You two fight together on the battlefield but Kouta won’t lie and say he hasn’t thought about taking away your belt in order to keep you safe or try to take you to another city to be safe (the ToQger special being prime example) but you need to assert your place here. You are going to fight until the end with him. You’re going to fucking protect him and he’s going to protect you. You two are in this together, no matter what. Kouta will relent in the end but you two promise to ensure to stick together and never let anything happen to each of you.

Okay, we all know Kouta is short as hell so like if there’s a height difference between the two of you PLEASE take advantage of it. If you’re taller than him, bend down to kiss him, or even pick him up! Fucking christ it makes him seethe and pouty and be like, “It’s not fair!” and sometimes he’ll just yoink you down for a kiss. If you’re shorter than him, Kouta is going to use your head as an arm rest just to tease you and always leave little dancing-like kisses up and down your form. He darts away before you can return them however, just to make you pouty too and giggle. But he’ll give you kisses in the end, don’t worry.

Loving Kouta is like the flowers that he now controls, they don’t rot but merely return to the earth that they grew out of - to be reborn and flourish once again. Loving Kouta is fleeting and ephemeral. Loving Kouta is setting yourself up for heartbreak for when he becomes an Overlord, he is terrified to tell you. He isn’t human any longer so it may not be best to be together anymore. He almost considers breaking up with you and he comes so close to. You shut him up before he can even think about that thought. You two promised to be together and you know that you cannot be by his side until the end when he has to leave but…you two are going to make it count. So when the god is leaving, he holds you close and lets his tears drip down on to your form. He gives your belt a parting gift, a portion of his power to remember him. Your Lockseed is warm, a pulsing beat and has that same warmth and love that radiates from Kouta himself. He kisses you every single second and makes it count. He whispers words that sometimes you cannot hear or understand (he speaks at a different frequency than human ears can catch but you can tell it’s full of sorrowful affection) but Kouta loves you and only you. He’ll visit you in his dreams whenever he can, or in person whenever he isn’t busy and the world is ending. It’s these moments that are the best of times, growing flowers to gift to you and keep alive…because even though his new planet is his home…you’ll forever be Kouta’s home.

Kumon Kaito

Truth be told, it’s going to be difficult loving Kaito. You two will make it work even if it means the death of you but it’s more so because of how prickly this man is. It’s not a bad thing because there are things that Kaito will only show you when you two are alone and little quirks that you only notice between the two of you. Like how he always has you in the corner of his eye or how his hand twitches whenever it’s in close proximity to yours. It’s the little things to be honest. So really, loving Kaito is an uphill battle because of his pride and his unwillingness to show weakness. Hell, even getting Kaito to agree to a relationship will be difficult. It takes a lot of time for him to agree, worried that it’s going to be a weak point for him but he does care for you and love you in his own way.

If you had been part of Team Baron it would be easier to break down his walls, but when he finds out you're an Armored Rider (regardless of being on his team or not) Kaito is noticeably protective of you on the battlefield. He has faith in you, he knows your skills, and trusts you to watch his back without saying anything. While Kouta and Micchy audibly and physically show that they are looking out for you, the trust Kaito has for you is something you cannot take for granted. It’s something awe-inspiring, back to back on the battlefield within a swarm of Inves, a synchronized sort of battle.

Not to mention that the entire team ships it!!!! Zack and Peco always tease you and Kaito (lightly of course because Kaito scary sometimes) but they see you like the second in command and tend to go to you for advice as much as they go to Kaito for help. It’s not like undermining their leader but more so you’ve become a part of this found family (sob) and they will do anything to protect you. You make Kaito shed this sort of smirkish and impish smile that tugs at the corner of his lips and he always tends to turn towards you juuust a bit slightly. His shoulders droop and he stands a bit straighter than normal, he seems…relaxed in your presence is the best way to put it. Actually Kaito kept your relationship a secret for a while but Peco found out and threw the biggest fucking party congratulating you two lol.

Dates are veeeeery lowkey. Kaito doesn’t really want over the top kind of occasions but prefers those when you two can just be yourselves. This mostly consists of staying at home or going to places where no one can find you - hole-in-the-wall places really. Kaito doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth so he prefers going to more savory places to eat with you. He has this habit of saving the last pieces of his meal for you, claiming that he “isn’t hungry” and that he’s “full” from his meal that he was clearly very much enjoying. If you leave him parts of your own meal to try, Kaito secretly beams and preens on the inside and claims that you’re “too soft” but snatches up your food anyway lol. Don’t ask him to feed you, he’ll do it with a bright blush on his face and if you feed him he’ll die hfuidsfvdhuhus. But honestly, I think Kaito doesn’t drink either and isn’t comfortable around the smell of alcohol or izakayas in general. It’s because of his papa and his alcoholism. So Kaito cannot stomach the smell or general taste of it. If you drink, you tend to do it when Kaito isn’t around but he does watch out for you if you two do go drinking together. He has his arm around you, leading you down the road in the most gentle of fashions and grumbling that you had better not die or how much of a fool you are. He loves you though, especially when you give him cute little drunk kisses. He’ll complain but secretly be happy.

What’s public affection? Fuck nah. That don’t exist. EsPECIALLY in front of Team Baron. Kaito tends to keep to himself whenever you two are in public, not because he doesn’t love you! He just…doesn’t know how to function half of the time. He wants to hold your hand but sometimes it’s best to let him come to you. To work up the confidence to do it. Sometimes it’s best to take the dive yourself and hold his hand, making him want to die inside out of embarrassment but it’s sweet and he doesn’t want to let go and squeezes your hand juuust a bit tighter. Other than that? Nothing. Just hand-holding. That’s it. Private is only when he’ll get more comfortable with soft kisses on the cheeks or pecks on the lips.

Kaito has a soft spot for kids and I firmly believe that he volunteers at orphanages and schools and daycares in his spare time. The kids also adore you whenever you visit! So like, sometimes going to hang out with kids is a sort of date between you two. It’s this rare smile that Kaito has that makes it worth it in the end. Speaking of, if you two ever decide to start a family together, Kaito wants to adopt kids plain and simple. He knows what it’s like to be an orphan (his parents uh…did not meet the best of ends) so he wants to give orphans a chance to have a family too. If anything, you two foster kids as well. Your home kind of becomes the “youth hang-out spot” for all of the kids in the city. They just show up and Kaito has the cupboards full of snacks and goodies to feed them, labeled accordingly. No kid is going to go hungry in your household! Actually, it’s what makes Kaito think of marriage - to see you interacting so positively with kids makes his heart melt and he finds his eyes drifting towards your fingers every now and then…

Kaito secretly sings whenever you two are alone. He has such a wonderful voice that you tell him that he should sing more often. He quips back that only you get to hear him sing because he hasn’t done it in many years - not since his parents’ death. It’s a vulnerability for him and slowly but surely Kaito gets more confident in his singing. He’ll sing you lullabies or sing random songs on the radio absentmindedly. It’s so sweet because he does this thing where he taps his finger or foot to the beat of the song and a glint in his eyes that makes him seem younger and not at all phased by conflict. Kissing him during this time makes him melt, it’s so great, pls trust me.

Arguments are not often but not rare. They’re not really screaming matches or arguments. Kaito’s blunt and will tell you what is wrong right away. He’s honest when he does have an issue and does make himself better for you if you say something to him. Sure sometimes he’s set in his ways and seems like he doesn’t listen but he does. He makes minute and miniscule efforts to make himself better for you and you notice. The subject about most of the arguments are about each other’s safety, more often than not. Especially when Zawame City is going to shit. Kaito doesn’t want to lose you and you don’t want to lose him. So you two take time together to talk things out in a respectful manner and sure they tend to become heated but never turn into screaming matches. You notice that he tends to flinch whenever you raise your voice so you are careful not to do so. Of course, the arguments end when you two agree to protect each other and as Kaito gets more and more power…he uses it to become more protective of you.

Kaito also has a collection of plushies that he hides from the others and only you know about it. The kids of course know and they are very careful when playing with them and he tends to give them away to the kids that visit more often than not. But there are times when he doesn’t, because those are the plushies you give him or remind him of you or the ones he wants to gift you! Kaito’s love language is time spent together, cooking, and gift giving. So time spent together and Kaito tends to pick up little gifts that remind him of you. Sure he doesn’t mind spending money but more often than not, Kaito is out there making things for you! One time he made you a scarf and like a bento for work and honestly, you cried.

Loving Kumon Kaito is bitter and sweet, both equally attacking you when it comes time to let him go. He isn’t scared of turning into an Overlord and you’re the first person he tells of what he becomes. You, like Yoko, want to follow him to the end but…he can’t allow that. Kaito loves you too much, you’re a weakness for him and the best kind. You make his heart feel at home and can take down those walls of his heart and mind. And it’s because he loves you that you cannot follow him beyond the veil of death. He destroys your belt as an act of mercy. You scream and cry at him and you see that he’s stoic and cold and calm as ever even as he secretly wishes to cry. But he only holds you close, closer than ever, and doesn’t speak but bury his face into your shoulder. It’s only then when you know what he means. So you cling to him, it may be the last time you do so. You watch the final battle between him and Kouta, and you hold Kaito close as he dissipates into the ether, a final kiss shared between you two and a promise. “Stay strong, not just for me, but for yourself.” and you visit his tree every single day. You swear you catch glimpses of him and his smile, faint touches and brushes against your body and face like Kaito is sending you final little respites and apologies that he cannot properly communicate. They’re freeing, unrestrained, like he can finally pour out his emotions for you…

Riders react to being saved by people who they didn't think would save them.

Kirihiko: Is this all Kamen Rider W can do?

Kaito: Oi, Kazuraba, is this all the strength you can muster?

Heart: Tomari Shinnosuke... This is payment for the debt I owe.

Brain: Any my repentance.

Medic: *starts healing everyone* And our aid.

Soreo: Rest for now, son. We'll deal with them.

[basically every dead family/ally Rider or enemy turned ally saves everyone else]

If I'm not mistaken... something like this has actually happened before.

It was in Let's Go All Riders, the 40th anniversary movie for Kamen Rider. The main Riders plus New Den-O were were down for the count when Date Akira shows up with the calvary- almost every Kamen Rider up to that point, good and evil. And then all the Riders get on their Rider Machines (in the case of W, their freaking tank), jump them off a cliff, forming the number 40 in the sky, and crash straight into the true form of Shocker's Great Leader.

It was called the All Rider Break, and it was glorious.

Honestly though, modern Rider probably wouldn't dare do such a thing, as seen with how many times they've brought back the villains only to backtrack on their character development and redemption. I'm not really sure why as people tend to like the redeemed villains a lot, too.

The most egregious example for me was the Roidmude generals and Chase, where the former three were brought back for the Ghost/Drive crossover as their villainous selves, and Chase came back in Zi-O as Mashin Chaser rather than Kamen RIder Chaser.

Arc 1: The Beat Riders

Premise

Most of the early episodes don't need to change all that much, compared to later--

Ah. Shit. I forgot to address my beef with Kaito. ok gimme a sec uhh. Ok. Okokok so here we go. I'm not gonna do this for all the characters because mostly, character introductions are fffffairly okay. Some are better than others but like, they're all at least workable… except. HIM. Kaito, the most out of all the gaim characters, makes zero sense so im gonna throw EVERYTHING out and try to extrapolate something based off of backstory given from Gaiden and canon and a little bit of real riders. Hope it makes sense. So, recap of backstory: Kaito's family used to be decently middle class and he played near the shrine tree, until Yggdrasil came in and bought them out. Kaito's dad didn't really know what to do after losing his purpose in life and turns to drinking/gambling, and they rapidly lose whatever money they had gotten from the corporation, dad becomes abusive, parents kill themselves and Kaito is left at an orphanage and grows up bitter and vaguely traumatized. Gets into a lot of fights at school, is a history nerd, etc. Cool, that's workable. Extrapolation from that for this scenario (oh yeah also, I did say girl now, it's Keiko now)

Keiko rreally hates Yggdrasil. If they had never moved in, maybe her family could have stayed together.

She's always looking for something to challenge her- she saw her family "give up" early on, and she doesn't want to end up like them. Struggle as proof that she's alive? No sympathy for people who've given up fighting, in her eyes.

Related to Point 2. Believes in a fair fight. There's no use in beating down someone clearly weaker than you, and anyone who does that is a coward and a bully. And if you need to lie to someone to beat them, then that doesn’t count as an actual victory. Wants to be acknowledged as the best by her own power.

A lot of pride. Doesn't like accepting help or depending on others/seeming weak. Talks big but also has a lot of like. Self-worth issues, thinks that people have to be "worth" something to be allowed to live, which comes from being abandoned by family so young.

Listen I know that this is a Very Standard anime rival lone wolf archetype but it didn't get to be a standard because it /Didn't/ Work, also I got really attached to Keiko halfway through typing this just let me have this please, I rarely if ever see it applied to girls,

Actually, the soccer episode also gave me the idea that Keiko would be the type of person that just. Rolls with things, no matter how vaguely ludicrous they are. Re: canon soccer episode. What are you gonna do when you get punched in the gut, sending you to an alternate dimension where the city wasn't destroyed and everyone uses the power of the drivers to play soccer? Clearly, become the best damn armored soccer player ever. That's such a funny trait I'm keeping it. It would be such a good source of deadpan comedy. Example: in high school Keiko was a delinquent who got into fights, how did she end up captain of a dance team? Nobody knows. (Most likely: somebody tried to insult her by saying that she couldn't dance for shit and she decided that the best way to rise to this challenge was to… take over a dance team and make them teach her.) Simultaneously zero chill and weirdly chill. Chill about all the wrong things.

Okay, back to plot. Only minor changes for the first 14 episodes, which I'm collecting into an arc--

Instead of Micchy becoming Ryugen, I wanna say that Micchy shows the rest of the Beat Riders the driver he got from Sid ahead of time and Mai sees her chance and asks him to give it to her. Because on one hand, Mai's grateful that Kouta's staying behind because Yuuya's gone missing and Mai isn't sure that she can handle being the final word of authority in Gaim, but on the other, Mai's kinda annoyed that Kouta stayed behind because it's like he doesn't trust her to be able to protect the team. Just because she's doubting herself doesn't mean that he should! She wants to stand on equal level with Kouta, so the driver. Micchy does give Mai the driver, because he cares a lot about Mai. However, subconsciously or not, he was looking forwards to being the one of the people that the team relied on, so a seed of resentment is also planted here. This colors his decisions in favor of keeping things secret from the rest of the team moving forwards as well.

Within the team, Mai and Micchy more-or-less switch roles, except that Micchy is also finding out a lot of Yggdrasil's-- and his sister's-- secrets in the meantime, so he's still extremely relevant. This way, there's a character arc set up for both Mai and Micchy-- Mai needs to learn that Gaim will follow her (like they did when Yuuya was around) not for her fighting ability or anything, but because she cared about people and wanted to make them happy. Mai realizes that she didn't need to change in order to become a strong leader, because she was already a strong leader and she just needed to trust in herself. On the other hand, Micchy's going to eventually realize that staying quiet about things that upset him is actively working to make his life worse because his friends and family aren't mind readers and they can't tell if they did something to upset him if he doesn't verbalize it. And if his friends and family really, truly care about him, then they'd be upset at THEMSELVES about hurting him, not at him. His secretive martyrdom is a ticking time bomb for everyone.

Ah yeah, one plot change I have to mention here: Keiko doesn't want the other teams to be her vassals because what's the fucking point, Team Baron is the best anyways. (That entire thing was a little. Hm. Idk how much sense it made, man. And it only lasted like two episodes so there was no point to it except to show that Kaito was an asshole even???) So in this 'verse, the reason that she gives Hase and Jo more powerful lockseeds in the first place is because. Gaim is the only real challenger to Baron, which means that theres only one person that she can fight meaningfully and that’s boring as shit. Raid Wild and Invitto still want to fight, they're just lacking the means. The only real surprise is that they come after her with drivers, which she didn't know they had. She has mixed feelings about the sneak attack. On one hand, maybe Hase and Jo are stronger than she thought they were! On the other, those motherfucking SNAKES,

Oh wow I just realized that having Keiko instead of Kaito makes that scene where Mai goes into the forest alone and Baron finds her… really gay. Mai bandaging Keiko's arm and they talk about their childhoods together… Mai remembers that Keiko would always watch her dance and Keiko tells her she was too shy to go up and say hi… Mai's deal wanting to protect those that she holds dear and all that jazz, while Keiko's a cynical SOB. ( By the by, Kouta's not super concerned with Mai being in there until he remembers ah. Mai doesn't have a Lock Vehicle so she can't get out, and the white armored rider is in there, which is when he rushes in like a fool. Except he's on his own while Mai is with Keiko, so it ends up being Kouta who has to get rescued, etc, etc. a lot of early stuff goes this way tbh. Small changes, but overall plot stays same so im not gonna outline it all.)

Takako's thing is a lot more. Okay. Bear with me here. I feel she'd def be far more defensive than Takatora was, because she's got a lot more to prove, and she's pretty isolated-- again, handing out the drivers wasn't her idea, and she's not getting the respect someone else might get at her job level, it's really stressful but Takako's kept going because the people around her-- Ryumi and the other scientists-- say that this is all going to work. Enter Akira. (YEAH. YOU HEARD ME. KAZURABA AKIRA DESERVES A BIGGER ROLE FUCK YALL)

Akira works for Yggdrasil-- she used to be part of a subsidiary, but her last project just got wrapped up, and she was reassigned to Takako's division as junior project manag-- what the fuck. Oh my god?? Is THIS what Yggdrasil's doing? WAIT THAT'S HER LITTLE BROTHER, SHE RECOGNIZES THAT SUIT. If you have Akira and Takako working together I feel that a lot more is viable here, you could compare and contrast Akira's ideals and Takako's. You can def. challenge Takako's ideology that a little risk and loss now is worth the gains that studying Helheim will grant in the future. Akira can act as audience substitute, basically. She's here to yell "SUPERVISOR KURESHIMA, WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, WHAT THE HELL" as takako eventually realizes that… possibly… maybe Akira has a point. She's spent so long chasing the company's bottom line she forgot things like, you know, empathy. The problem is, does she realize this too slowly to do any good? Also, what does Ryumi think about Takako's convictions wavering?

So while we're getting introduced to the main players of the Yggdrasil corporation through Akira, the Beat Rider side asks the questions: Who made these drivers, and why give them out to us? And whats with the strange forest? Which eventually leads us into the Christmas game, and the Yggdrasil base camp incident. Kouta learns considerably less than he did (seriously, how did those scientists not get suspicious) but he does learn: this forest is called Helheim, the scientists here work for yggdrasil, and that the Sengoku is the scientist in charge of this project. And then they realize that kouta isn't a yggdrasil employee and raise the alarm except oh no, that’s the moment that the inves attack and suddenly they have more to worry about. Again, minor changes. Kouta sees his sister at the Yggdrasil base but doesn't get the chance to talk to her, everything else can basically go as it did… incluuuding Hase.

Okay. Hase.

Here's how this works. His driver gets broken, okay, fine. Jo doesn't abandon him right away. Even if he's kind of an aggressive musclehead, they've still been working together for a while. But she's not enough to fight alone, and Hase can see that it's really only a matter of time before Jo's goodwill runs out. So he eats the fruit! And does not turn into a monster right away. Instead, it gives him the power that he was looking for this entire time-- he is able to fight on even level as the rest of the armored riders, even though his belt is broken, and it looks like everything is okay. With this, some of the other Beat Riders are considering eating the fruit too. Why's everyone so worried anyways? Besides, they look delicious… however, Micchy points out that Yggdrasil handles the fruits with the utmost caution, and that just because there are no visible harmful effects doesn't mean that they aren't dangerous, etc.

Kouta and Akira also sit down to have a talk about the driver over dinner one night-- they've both been kind of keeping secrets from each other. Akira tries to convince Kouta to stop using the driver because she knows that it's dangerous but isn't sure if Kouta knows that (remember, last time she saw Kouta using the driver in person was Episode 2 shenanigans) -> Kouta shows his sister that yeah, he knows that this isn't a joke, but he wants to help people like she raised him to do. Right now, they need the drivers to fight. Akira relents because he's right, but promises him that after the immediate crisis is over, they're going to have to have another talk about this. Kouta plans to bring his sister to the Gaim garage so that she can brief everyone on everything she's overheard in her the short time she's been working as Takako's assistant, but that'll have to wait until the weekend when she's free. Meanwhile, important stuff is going on in the rest of the city. Show that the beat riders have been losing their audience because of a sudden string of disappearances in Zawame (caused by ppl eating the fruits), and the police are encouraging most people to stay home. Not a lot of people are willing to go outside anymore-- they're scared, and rightfully so. Inves attacks are growing more frequent.

This is pretty frustrating for most of the Beat Riders, especially because people are telling them to break it up and just go home too. More and more Inves are showing up, too… And then some official or something shows up one day and says that until ZPD solves the mystery of the disappearances, the stages are going to be closed. And this is when Hase snaps. See, Hase has been using the belt for a while, so he's built up some immunity to the Helheim fruit's effects. (He doesn't lose it immediately like Yuuya did) But it's still not enough. He'd been acting erratically. More aggressive, recently. And today's the last straw. Hase gets into an argument with the official, it starts getting ugly, Jo steps in between them and…. Hase transforms into an Inves. People are taking pictures of it and everything-- even though the Beat Riders Hotline shuts down the live camera feed quickly, its not fast enough. And Hase goes after Jo. Kouta and Mai run over to pull him off of her and he runs off and everyones going???????

Hase holes up in a warehouse somewhere and mostly transforms back except for hand and he's terrified, he doesn't know what's going on. Jo finds him first and yells at him HEY WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT, DUDE which, while totally understandable, does nothing for Hase's stress levels. He transforms into an Inves and runs out onto the street, where the others, still searching for Hase, stumble onto him. They end up fighting near Charmant and Oren comes out to see what the fuss was all about, he ends up joining the fight. Hase's lashing out in fear and pain but also he's putting civilians at risk, so the Beat Riders are forced to fight him even though they're well-aware that they can't just like, do a murder. Meanwhile, Keiko gets cornered in Helheim by Youko and Takako, and she is captured. Takako leaves halfway into the battle because she gets word that they've tracked down a Beat Rider that became an Inves and she has to take care of it ASAP. Kouta, Mai, and Jo are still fighting Hase (and also Oren, who doesn't really know what's going on and is trying to kill the inves) without actually trying to fight Hase when Takako shows up. She tells them that that Inves is no longer human and tries to put an arrow right through him, with intent to kill. When the smoke clears…

Jo falls to her knees, because she protected Hase. In the shocked silence afterwards, Jo tells Hase to run. She doesn't know whats going on! And maybe Hase can be kind of a jerk sometimes, and really annoying, he's still her friend, and she doesn't want to see him die. Hase regains some degree of control over his transformation and he backs away, runs off. Takako tries to go after him but is blocked by Kouta, who tells them to get Jo out of there and he'll handle the white armored rider. Spoiler alert: he can't handle the white armored rider, but he bought enough time for the rest of them to get out. Kouta is taken in by Yggdrasil.

I think this is a good place to stop for now, so I'll do more later. Okay, see you around!

Z is for ghost

Kouta’s drowsy and silly, in the kind of mood that always drives Kaito up a wall, and since he’s already going to be inherently annoying he figures, why not push it a little, and mumbles, “Hey, Kaito, do you believe in ghosts?” into Kaito’s bare shoulder.

“Don’t be ridiculous, Kazuraba.” Which is the expected answer, but which is then startlingly followed up by, “Of course I believe in ghosts.”

Kouta blinks, which makes Kaito twitch, probably because of the sensation of eyelashes moving against his skin. “Really? I assumed you wouldn’t, it doesn’t seem...rational enough for you?”

“And what do you think is so irrational about believing in the power of a human soul with sufficient conviction? If there’s work to be done, a strong person isn’t going to let something as pitiful as death stop them. Why, do you not believe in ghosts?”

“Well, yeah, but mostly, like. Mean ones. You know, like in Ring or something? We watched that once at a Gaim party, ages ago, scared the crap out of me. I could barely sleep for a week. Akira thought I was on drugs.”

Kaito huffs, but in the way that means, You’re absurd and somehow I enjoy that, not the way that means, you’re absurd and I’m going to be mad about it, and rolls over on top of him. “That seems appropriate to your character.” And, before Kouta can ask what that’s supposed to me, his mouth is stopped with a kiss, and against his lips Kaito says, “Now stop babbling.”

The air smells sharp, here, and the midday light filters down through a thick canopy unlike anything else in Helheim. There is no rope around the trunk, no paper streamers, although Mai has said she’d like there to be--Kouta’s promised to get her rice straw and paper, the next time he can travel back to Earth. Still, the camphor tree is its own creature, among the vast breathing thing that is the forest, and that seems appropriate. The stone ruins around its base are slowly being overtaken, but the camphor tree will always be itself.

Kaito, when he’s present at all, is always slightly higher up in the branches than where Kouta is sitting. Most of him remains in the shadows no matter how he moves, but from the darkness there are a few flashes of red--his eyes, his shirtfront, the lapels of his coat--and occasionally one of orange, the translucent form of First Squirrel running over his shoulders and down to his pale hands.

Kouta makes himself comfortable on a broad branch, leans back against the trunk, and says, “So how’s the spooky tour guide business going nowadays?”

“I wish you wouldn’t call it that, Kazuraba.” Kaito’s voice is the wind in the leaves and the creaking of wood. “Somehow you make it sound frivolous. As usual.”

“I mean, if I’m not getting on your nerves, how are you supposed to remember that I’m here?”

“As if I could forget.”

Kouta squints up through the branches, trying to get a better look, but he can’t get a full picture of Kaito even with his supernaturally-sharp eyesight. Red, gray, black, an oval of face, a suggestion of coattails, a movement that must be legs, but he can’t see the feet that once moved so gracefully, or the mouth whose sneer he’s surprised that he misses. “I wish you’d come out where I could see you better.”

“No, you don’t. It would only upset you.”

“Since when do you care about upsetting me?”

“Surprisingly, Kazuraba, dying in someone’s arms can have an effect on a person.”

Kouta shifts on his branch, frowning. He wants to say, I miss you, but that seems like it’d be inappropriate given that Kaito’s right there. And he wants to say, I’m sorry, but he knows, deep in his heart, that it’s not something Kaito wants to hear. He never wanted apologies. He definitely needed a few, but he didn’t want them.

A particularly heavy gust blows through the leaves of the camphor tree, and Kaito’s voice is carried with it again. “Close your eyes.”

“Ok? If you want me to.” Kouta closes his eyes.

It’s not as much a feeling as it is the suggestion of a feeling, a hand on the back of his head gentler than it ever was in life and a mouth on his that he yearns up towards even though he can feel its lack of substance. Kaito never kissed like this when he was alive.

Maybe he wanted to.

“Hey, Kaito,” he says, eyes still closed, leaning into the fingers he can still feel combing through his hair, “do you still believe in ghosts?”

“Don’t be ridiculous, Kouta,” says the creaking of wood as a body settles unseen against his side. “Of course I do.”
