“Me eizher. Ze protective magics on it are supposed to be as strong now as zhey were when Merlin walked ze Earth. Some say zat ze Curse initially placed on ze keep was on pier with Morgana’s own black magic.”

“(nods) Right. So process of elimination -- either the Ministry wants to see if they can recreate those shields to protect themselves from Grindelwald...”

“...Or ze Ministry has already been infiltrated by zhose who wish to give zat knowledge to Grindelwald himself.” 

“You really think Jules will want to involve himself in all that?”

“Bien sûr, non. But Dolorous Guard is not just a haven of black magics. Another fun friendship scene I had in my head and wanted to write out, this time for our resident Slytherin and honorary “Ravenclaw” on the Empyrean! Any of my German-speaking friends, I really hope I didn’t butcher your language -- please forgive and/or correct ANY of this that’s wrong, I really tried!! 😖 But yeah, I see these two being the resident pragmatists, even if everyone on the Empyrean are kind of escapists in their own way, and both Felix and Desi would definitely be able to tell which direction the wind is blowing when it comes from Grindelwald -- if nothing else, then because they’re from blood purist families who either passively or actively support Grindelwald’s ideology and actions. Plus the idea of these two becoming close confidantes despite their contrasting personalities just makes me happy. 💙

Soooooooo, as y'all know, I went to see a highschool production of Newsies earlier today, and this is a ramble about it lol

It was absolutely AMAZING for a highschool production!!!

The Jack absolutely BLEW ME AWAY HOLY CRAP. He had the accent and mannerisms down, and I only heard his very very thick Wisconsin accent a few times lol. His performance was filled with emotion, and he could actually dance UNLIKE SOMEONE *cough cough* Jeremy Jordan *cough*. He couldn't belt the full last note of Santa Fe, but he went for it and I love that.

If y'all know me, you'll know I rarely cry. Literally nothing makes me cry, and it's actually quite frustrating. Well, Letter From the Refuge actually brought a tear to my eye. Crutchie was amazing and an absolute all-around Sunshine Boi™. (something specific that I remember is that when Kath told them they might make the front page, he slumped against a table like he was about to faint lol)

Davey left a lot to be desired, and I don't love Kath enough to have paid enough attention to her to give a character analysis lol. She was an AMAZING singer though!

Race was a girl, and I normally don't like when productions do that, but she got all the mannerisms down, and I really liked her! (something specific I noticed was she was leaning on the set during Once And For All, and when she was called over she lazily peeled herself off the wall, and I was just like 'yessss, that's my Racer' lol). She also did the erster bit amazingly. It's really easy to be cringy doing that, but she did it well and I laughed

Pulitzer was really great!! I normally zone out during Pulitzer scenes (especially Bottom Line), but I really liked his performance! He was very realistic. At the end when Jack and Pulitzer 'spit shake', he actually spit in his hand and shook Jack's hand XD

Hannah was SO FUNNY OMGGGG. Her comedic timing was exactly on point, the voice was great, and she got the accent DOWN PAT.

The Delanceys were just- 🤌Love love love love love!!

I absolutely LOVED Weasel, too. I liked how he said his lines, and he was just the right amount of funny while still being an antagonist. I didn't really like the way he played some of his other characters, but I loved Weasel.

In terms of choreography, there wasn't much of it (and KONY was MAJORLY abridged so that there was no dance break), but what choreo it had was very clean and together. I can tell the choreographer knew these kids, what they could do, and how to make them look good.

As for songs, they kinda butchered Watch What Happens Reprise, but that one's hard, so I understand lol. For Carrying the Banner Reprise (MY FAVORITE!! [right after Bottom Line]), instead of everyone coming out and singing it, they did tiny groups singing a line or two each while moving office set pieces off the stage, and I kinda liked it like that. It's kinda like they're all over the city, instead of all together in one part of the city.

Anyway, that's all I can think of right now, except for that my sister and I wore our newsie caps lol. I might make another chapter later, or just add onto this one.

Inspired by black and white graphic illustrations. Exaggerated shapes and lines. Could work well attempting something similar as a lino print at home?

Problem solving- Looking up illustrators, linocut printers and botanical illustrations for inspiration. However could be a potential problem that I would not be able to achieve details like the above artists as linoprints- might not translate/ pick up details in print due to smaller lino canvas size nor having the skill to create such detailed stencils. Might have to reduce lines for design to more simplify and/or create block shapes for contrast- like Brice or Beardsley. 

Floral research -Medicinal plants and flowers 

St Johns Wort

Used to treat depression and anxiety. Can not be taken with anti depressants. Easily found and grown, used in pharmacy. 

Chamomile 

Used for calm and help with sleep, when used in tea. Soothes skin. Can be used as oil. Also has anti-inflammatory properties can help allergy sufferers, women with heavy, painful periods, and people living with arthritis.

Lavender

Calming scent, used in aromatherapy.

Plans/next steps from research

-Draw sketches of above plants using ink or fine liner. Looser lines, inspired by artists research. 

-Draw sketches of plants and human figure together and explore body combinations with plants. Whole body? Silhouette? Upper half? Head? 

- Design and create lino print stencil combining human figure and plants. Also take inspiration of plants coming out of head from my Sculpture piece ‘Therapy Sessions’.

Where Would You Be Now by Carrie Vaughn - What do you do in a world where the thought of birth control is a luxury? What can you do when you don’t have food to feed yourself, let alone a baby? When going into labor could mean your last hours in life? Kath is a lesbian who doesn’t really have to worry about those problems, but as a guard of a clinical fortress, she watches women go through these choices constantly.

The Last to Matter by Adam-Troy Castro - Perhaps the trippiest story in the anthology, Kayn lives in a post-apocalyptic world that is about to end. Gender, food, race, sex, bodies, murder, pleasure, and consciousness are endless and every variation is possible. Machines allow us to enjoy our lives, but now no one knows how to fix them. But it’s okay, nothing matters anyway.

Last Chance by Nicole Kornher - *This story always give chills* Centuries after the giants (us) are gone and our technology is known as old magic, a little girl just became a child slave. She has been tasked to squirm underground, beneath the wastes, to find fossils for her captors. But she finds something that still holds magic from Before that can save them all.

Cannibal Acts by Maureen F. McHugh - “We’re just another set of dinosaurs, about to go extinct,” and that’s not enough food left. Kate can’t bring herself to eat her fellow neighbors, but her girlfriend is brave enough to butcher and cook those who die for the eaters in the community. If you love someone, would you offer your body to them?

Francisca Montoya’s Almanac of Things That Can Kill You by Shaenon K. Garrity - This almanac ends the anthology with a book written for later generations, that contains the only knowledge on what can kill you and how to treat them. It’s really worth a look, especially when Francisca goes from fed up to desperate. *I also learned a lot about everyday stuff that can cause these things. Scary.*

Resolutions Pt. 2 - Newsies Headcanon

Requested: Can you write more on Katherine and Crutchie's resolutions? Does Kath try to convince her friends to eat those weird diet dishes and what language is Crutchie learning? I need the answers XD

Crutchie is trying to learn German

He’s tried learning Spanish and Italian in past years for his friends, but has failed both times

You know he’s trying to learn from Rosetta stone or Duolingo

It wasn’t uncommon to see Crutchie with a device in his hand 

He’ll mumble to himself whatever he hears from the device

To people outside of his friend group they’d think he’s crazy

He wastes money on trying to learn any language

He’ll even try convincing everyone to learn it with him

Davey has always been nice and said yes

In the end Davey always learns the language instead of Crutchie

Whatever Crutchie does learn he’ll butcher

He knows how to say ‘hi’ and ‘bye’ in Spanish, Italian, and German, and that’s the full extent of his knowledge

He’ll get grumpy if he can’t learn it as fast as he want, which is what makes him quit each time

He’ll be mad about it most of the year until he choses the langauge for the following year

Katherine is doing a combination of diets that make Jack’s head hurt

When she makes a vegan gluten free pizza she makes everyone try it

Everyone fakes loving it

Aside from Spot of course

Of course when she walks away they all spit it out

Jack got the worst end of Katherine’s new found diet

Living together he too was forced to adapt whenever they were together

Jack often went to bed unsatisfied, sneaking a chocolate he had hidden

The only time Jack got “proper” food was when he went out with everyone

Any excuse to get away from gluten free vegan low carb food he took it

Davey even took one for the team when Katherine made fake meat

After almost being sick from her food he decided to take matters into his own hands

Davey helped Katherine find recipes that actually tasted good

Jack could almost kiss Davey for doing so ;)

Artworks Reminiscent of Hanzo Hasashi’s Psyche 

1. Francis Bacon, Figure with Meat 

This painting is of a disturbing depiction of Pope Innocent X sat in front of a cow carcass cut lengthways in half. The carcass is a common motif that runs through Bacon’s work, the result of the artist’s long-time fascination with butcher shops and appreciation for Old Master portrayals of meat in still life. Bacon’s inclusion of the carcass is a direct reminder that in the end, death awaits each and every one of us.

2. Edvard Munch, The Sun

This mural, dominating through size, unmitigated frontality, and power of imagery, as it utilizes the symbol of the sun’s image in pure, intense, and masculine dominance. Illuminated by the sunrays are the water of the ocean, the bare rocks of a Northern landscape, and a slim strip of verdant green that separated land and sea. A clean, straight horizon line divides the waters from sky. The great sun is all-pervasive, shining from the heavens upon land and sea, its rays reaching out to all eternity. Inhuman itself, it is the source of all life.

3. Kathe Kollwitz, Death Grabbing at a Group of Children

Set against a blank background free of any markers of time or place, Death comes, sometimes violently—as in Tod greift in eine Kinderschar (Death grabbing at a group of children)—and sometimes as a welcome friend. In the final print, Ruf des Todes (Call of Death), the artist herself finally yields to the temptations that had lured so many before her. Here, as in the opening print of a mother who has lost all hope, Death need only extend its hand.

4. Georges Mathieu, Homage to Death 

Expressive, gestural and innovative, Art Informel was, as the name implies - an art without predefined form or structure. Artists merely had to engage with their materials. The actual name "Art Informel" was first coined in 1951 by the French art critic Michel Tapie, when describing the improvisation (untouched by past or contemporary conventions) practised by a number of painters at his Paris exhibition on the theme of "Extreme Tendencies in Non-Figurative Painting". See it as a balanced, elegant, (sometimes animated, sometimes soothing) style of abstract art which is nearly always charged with content taken from the natural world. They often are marked by sumptuous color, its harmonious, painterly beauty.
