#WTA 2023: Katerina Siniakova pockets her first grass title
Saturday was the day doubles specialist, Czechia’s Katerina Siniakova, finally won her first grass title as she overcame a big second set challenge by Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti, 6-2, 7-6(5), in nearly two hours of tennis at Bad Homburg. Both players actually just had an average service game, but Siniakova, ranked 52 in the world pounced early on Bronzetti when she took the first set — but the…

AO WD F: Barbora Krejcikova/Katerina Siniakova [1] def. Shuko Aoyama/Ena Shibahara [10] 6-4, 6-3 Match Recap
🎥 Wide World of Sports Australia
The women's doubles finals of the Australian Open tested the tenth seeds, Shuko Aoyama/Ena Shibahara, against the first seeds Barbora Krejcikova/Katerina Siniakova, who once again "flew their way" to the finals. Once again, this exciting match boiled down to the combination between the pressure points handling, the return depth, and the pace maintenance.
The match started with an 18-shot rally, where Siniakova executed a working volley to close the point, which game ended with an early break for the Czech pair. Their unpredictable shot-making, sometimes, would leave the opponents' guessing, and it showed in their deep returns in the first set. They survived a break point coming from Aoyama's smash, but they eventually held that game after another volley. Without ever looking back, Krejcikova/Siniakova had strong serves to close the first set 6-4, with a one-two-punch shot and an unreturned serve as the 2 closing points.
The middle of the second set might have given Krejcikova/Siniakova some pressure, but they eventually got off with it. First, Siniakova's volley at the net successfully secured them a break point at 0-0* 30-40 before they eventually broke a game later. However, Siniakova's shot misfire paved a way for the Japanese pair to break back, where they ultimately did to level 2-2 at the expense of Krejcikova's forehand error. The momentum shift was averted three games later with a stellar net game from Siniakova to open the moment before Krejcikova's forehand winner confirmed the break at 4-3.
They did not need to serve for the match: instead, they created more opportunities to close the match in the pressure points. After saving 2 game points from Aoyama/Shibahara, Siniakova pulled a working volley to secure the match point, before their return game made Shibahara misfire her forehand. As a result, they took the second set 6-3 and won the women's doubles title at the end of the day.
This title marked Krejcikova/Siniakova's fitth Grand Slam doubles titles together in the span of 2 years, seventh overall. Four titles were won in the past 12 months alone, except Roland Garros 2022, where Krejcikova was tested positive for COVID-19. Definitely a legendary pair already in the making.

Her best Australian Open result is a runner-up showing alongside Barbora Strycova in 2020. [Late Post] US Open WD F: Barbora Krejcikova/Katerina Siniakova [3] def. Caty McNally/Taylor Townsend 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 US Open via SpoTV Indonesia
And here came the late recap when the Men's Singles finals are underway. Since I am still taking a post-match-watching break, I am using it to write down this recap while following the Men's Singles scores.
I was not sure how reliable was both pairs' second serves, because this should have also been where McNally/Townsend was vulnerable at. Simultaneously, Krejcikova/Siniakova's first serves became even more reliable with winning 65% points there, despite service games were almost the reason of them trailing at 3-6, 1-4 (remember the double fault). But, there was another aspect that brought them up from the trenches.
This aspect, to my understanding, was a combination between the execution of the closing points within the rallies, the net game (and the baseline, occasionally), and the shot choices. Krejcikova/Siniakova started to get even more aggressive from the moment when McNally double-faulted somewhere in the second set, and kept building their momentum from there, mostly from their return games. The volleys, sometimes notably the backhands and lobs, started to work better, hence their 41 winners. They even dictated the rally at some points that drove McNally/Townsend to commit errors, went after their shots at the end. Truly solid comeback.
With this title, Krejcikova/Siniakova managed to achieve Career Golden Slam in doubles, in which their titles spanned from being the champion in Roland Garros (2018 & 2020), Wimbledon (2018 & 2022), the Year-End Championship (2021), Australian Open (2022); being the runner-up in the Year-End Championship (2018) and the Australian Open (2021); as well as being the Summer Olympics gold medalist in Tokyo 2020(21). Congratulations and keep up the good work! On the other hand, commiserations to Caty McNally and Taylor Townsend, in which this is McNally's second US Open final, and definitely a tremendous progress to Townsend's comeback attempts, keep this going!
