One of the few times I'll actually share anything from this paper I'm editing from my Master's degree because I should have edited it long ago and submitted it for publication. My professor at the time said it was good enough that with some edits I could have published it... it's only taken four years to get around to said edits...

Anyway! Enjoy a small bit of the intro of my paper on disability in Frankenstein!

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is a novel that established an entirely new genre at a time when novels were romantic or grotesque. The advent of science-fiction through Frankenstein, with its utilisation of scientific discoveries of the time pitched against moral and religious belief systems that argued against the idea of humans creating in the way God created them, and the reliance on physical difference to mark deviance (either innate or learned) places Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in the unique position to be examined from a disability perspective in the twenty-first century where genetic screening, gene therapy, and creating designer babies is the new-age version of Frankenstein’s experiments with creating his own Adam.

In the original I didn't really bother to mention how Shelley essentially created sci-fi as we know it today. So I'm enjoying throwing that into this paper too. And also going off about transhumanism and paralells with the science of Shelley's time potentially being used to create The Perfect Human (not) and the science of our time being used to create The Designer Baby. It's gonna be fun ngl.

Also I got to go off again about masturbation, onanism, and ableism in the whole "physical proof you're deviant and thus deserve to suffer" bullshit of the puritanical 18/19th centuries that is absolutely making some sort of absurd resurgence in the 21st century.

hello!! I'm a highschooler who's high-key OBSESSED with vampire squids and I really, really want to do research on them in the future if possible. Aside from the obvious things that I have to do (major in marine bio, get involved in as many lab/research projects as possible in undergrad, etc), what else can I do to ensure that I get the chance to study these dudes in the future? (I hope this question makes sense)

I pretty much want to dedicate my life to them because I love them so much. Also, you are one of my biggest inspirations for pursuing teuthology!! Thank you so much for everything you do!! The Ologies podcast episode that you featured in did wonders for my passion ❤️❤️❤️

Ok so we got good news and medium news. Good news, there are lots of people working with cephalopods, and you can totally work with vampire squid if this is your calling. Medium news is that generally speaking people don't work on JUST vampire squid. In my personal experience, when it comes to working with animals like this, that we don't see very often, many scientists end up working on a bunch of animals INCLUDING that animal. Sometimes people will work on one animal their whole careers, especially those that are good for keeping in the lab. Deep sea critters are just... harder! So for example take Kat Bolstad at ALCES in New Zealand- her lab works on a whole bunch of deep sea cephalopods! A lot of this also depends on the KIND of science you're doing. Are you working on fossils? Molecular Biology? Behavior? Ecology? This also determines how specific the animals you'll work on will be.

Other than the things you mentioned, just being in conversation with other scientists online and reading as much of the literature as you can so you come in with an existing deep knowledge of the animal is great. This is also super useful because you'll learn about WHO is working on these animals that you'd need to meet. A lot of the squid biologists talking to each other happens on twitter. It helps when the scientists who might hire you already know you and social media helps with that!

the jockwood universe (college au)

basically jockwood is a thing now, and these are the generic world building hc's of this au :)

essentially what's going to happen is a bunch of x reader fics set within this universe, all probably slightly different but every one of them set with this same background to them, so... yeah!

(also a special thank you to the multiverse of George for helping answer my pestering questions)

Lockwood is on the football team/part of the university football society

Also the fencing society

George and Lockwood are friends from high school but are in separate circles in college

George is also on the ice hockey team

Kipps is on the football team too

When they were like… preteens or something Kipps and Lockwood had a friendly football match where they were on opposing teams

Lockwood’s team beat Kipps’ by… a lot (and Kipps totally isn’t bitter about it)

Holly is a student rep

Lucy is in debate club and fencing

Skull is a campus cat who hisses and scratches everyone but Lucy

He’s called Skull bc he’s got a weird patch on his head that looks a bit like a skull

And also Lucy seems to always know what Skull wants?? It’s like she can actually talk to him or something 👀

Barnes is a very tired senior lecturer who is the academic advisor to the trio + Holly and Kipps, and he wishes they would stop hogging his office hours

The Winkmans are a family who live in town and sit on their porch every morning shouting abuse at people who walk past

Bobby!!! On the football team and also in band (plays the clarinet probably)

Kate and Ned as well - both on the football team and hang out with Kipps obviously, along with Bobby

Rotwells College is in the same town/city and often competes against the Fittes university (that Penelope is head of)

Flo goes to Rotwells’ and is in their fencing society, but she sneaks onto the Fittes campus all the time to feed the ducks and throw frozen peas at passing students

Visitors - there’s a lot of local folklore and haunted buildings, and Lockwood and Co go and investigate because they’re Like That

Technology is modern, and as such they have phones

And group chats

Obviously Lockwood and Co is the name of Lockwood, Lucy, George, and Holly’s group chat

Lockwood is surprisingly old-fashioned when it comes to technology though? Like he has a record player and cassette tapes in his room that he just whips out every now and then

thank you so much for these!! and thanks for your patience as well waiting for me to respond. n.n let's see, what more can i say about yunsol's gay stash as it were.

so as a brief overview: yunsol comes from a sort of… traditional, conservative family. so she has not come out to them yet, in fear of them rejecting her. as a result, she started a "stash" of things when she was a preteen, and has been adding it since. some things get taken out and used or given away, and some things stay and are more permanent parts of the stash. she moves the location of her stash every so often, to ensure it stays hidden and unknown. so without further ado:

Another fun conversation I found while digging for those tidbits, this one about Maxwell and Pryce

Gill side note: while there is some exterior material to canon suggesting Pryce and Maxwell would Not get along it's very funny because how many steps from "I can rewrite a memory" and "experimenting on an AI unit to expand his capacity" is it really to hard-coding anxiety into an AI's personality matrix, and from there to scooping someone's brain out to replace it with a glorified RC rig Kat for real Gill this is unexplored territory people!! Kat I think Maxwell wants to believe she's an ethical AI scientist but when the rubber hits the road….she's not that different from Pryce Gill you'd rewrite them against their consent when you believe it's necessary just because your parameters for "when it's necessary" are narrower and less nakedly self-serving doesn't mean that isn't what's going on Kat I think she would see that as the 'kinder' option versus deleting Hera, but at the end of the day you're violating her consent when she was explicit that she'd rather die Gill you're still changing the building blocks of someone's identity based on what you believe is best for them against their explicit wishes not to Slippery Slope Argument but it would have been very fun to see Maxwell go off on Pryce and then have Pryce hit her upside the head with a devastating "we're not so different" speech Kat shame Maxwell didn't make it to s4 so she could be the restraining bolts and be like hm is this the inevitable slippery slope of my actions Still wonder how Maxwell thinks invented AI since she'd never heard of Pryce. was Cutter just like here's this cool tech. don't ask where it came from Kate I keep forgetting that… They don’t keep her secret, she co-published the DSSPPM Kat I guess that's true, it's possible she knew who Pryce was but just didn't recognize her Gill Maxwell: Surely, like all tech corporations, there is a large team of brilliant engineers who worked round the clock on this whose names will never be known in their lifetimes. I'd definitely recommend you to read books. Video essays and such can be informative and entertaining, but you should look into literature as well.

There's the Anarchist library that collects books, focusing mainly on anarchism but branching out into other political ideologies, as well as critiques of capitalism and fascism. Please don't ignore literature- you can find audiobooks on Youtube if you'd like, but getting all of your information from a guy on YouTube is not reliable.

You probably know names like Karl Marx, maybe even Petr Kropotkin or David Graeber, so besides that, you might want to check out:

The Muslims Are Coming! by Arun Kundnani

The Accumulation of Capital by Rosa Luxemburg

Mutual Aid by Dean Spade

Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge

That being said:

Shaun- particularly the videos on Nagasaki & Hiroshima and the Bell Curve, which count 4 hours in total. The rest of his content are mostly takedowns of specific videos or people, i.e. PragerU, providing insight into how people misquote their sources and pick and choose information to share to support their points.

Jessie Gender- focusing on issues pertaining to gender and transphobia, from a transfem perspective, with some Star Trek thrown into the mix. She's done a series talking in depth into the What Is a Woman? movie by Matt Walsh that I would definitely recommend.

Tirrrb- focused on racism, Black identity. His editing style is also very fun, but that's besides the point. He's a relatively small creator too, especially given the effort he puts into his videos.

Mia Mulder- again, gender and transphobia discussed from the point of someone who's transfem, with some history lessons thrown into the mix. She also focuses on conspiracy theories and alternate history stuff.

Three Arrows- one of my favourite creators, his videos talk about fascism and bigotry, often touching on WW2. He often compares historical events to modern day politics.

F.D. Signifier- focuses on issues within/around the Black community, racism, toxic masculinity and sexuality, often all in relation to each other.

Kat Blaque- her content is a bit more on the reaction video/entertainment side, if you're looking for that. She also focuses on transphobia and sexuality, as well as anything going on at the moment.

Khadija Mbowe- sexuality, gender roles and LGBTQ topics, history of feminism, all in a very laid back format.

hey kat, i’m sorry your youth group meeting sucked:( rich people can be so condescending and awful when they find out you are not also rich.

i too had a sucky week and forgot to schedule anything to do this weekend so i am looking at a boring weekend of studying. i have a test on monday and just looking at the review brings me to tears, so it’s probably for the best.

2. I only draw on actual paper. I use pencils, black pens and colored pencils and I quite enjoy the finality of drawing something in the real physical non digital world

4. I can't limit my love of literature to just one book, but some authors I adore are Ken Follett, Lisa Genova, Angie Thomas and Jennifer Weiner. I love everything I've read by those people.

remembering the time that I accidentally led one of my 9th graders (I’m an English teacher) to memorize entire scenes of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew despite the fact that we weren’t even reading that play in class.

it all started with her (and a couple others) complaining about how they’d have to read Romeo and Juliet in the spring, and I responded by basically saying, “I know, it sucks. It’s not his best play by far.” Which, of course, compelled them to ask what was his best play.

I responded by saying his best comedy is Taming of the Shrew, which in many ways is one of the first haters-to-lovers stories we have. That got their attention, of course.

One student in particular (we’ll call her Ally) really loves that trope, and I showed her the scene in which Kate and Pertruchio meet. She struggled with the language at first, but I walked her through it like this:

Pet: Myself am moved to woo thee for my wife.

Kat: “Moved,” in good time! Let him that moved you hither / Remove you hence.

Here, she is basically responding to his proposal by saying, “Whoever brought you here can take you back now please >:)”

This of course made Ally laugh (it’s funny, after all), and she proceeded to take the 10lb anthology from my hands and read the rest of the scene, pausing every once in a while to ask what something meant. (If you convince students that there is great entertainment lying at the bottom of comprehension, they’ll do the work needed to get there.)

Fast forward a few weeks, and Ally has told me that she has gotten used to Shakespearean English (she still struggles with vocab, but the syntax has become familiar). I pointed out to her that everything is written in iambic pentameter (every line has 10 syllables with alternating accents—unstressed, stressed). Ally’s mind was BLOWN. (If I had told her this while teaching Romeo and Juliet in the spring as a side note about Shakespeare in general, you can imagine she would not have been nearly as interested.) She then proceeded to recite lines FROM PURE MEMORY and counted the syllables (I was flabbergasted), and found that the lines indeed held 10 syllables each. I revealed to her that people in Shakespeare’s time didn’t actually talk like how people do in his plays—so even back then people probably struggled through comprehension sometimes. She appreciated their company.

All this to say that kids are actually VERY hungry for knowledge—and even literature—but the way we introduce it to them has everything to do with how they’ll respond to it. If you show them that you’re a nerd about it, they’ll believe you when you tell them it’s a piece worth looking into.

She uses her mother’s success and her father’s career to rope you in, hoping her curated persona keeps you around. The hardest part, however, is that beneath it all, she just wishes someone would love her for exactly who she really is.

RELATIONSHIP: Greer’s Roommate

Everyone always talks about how they wish their roommate would get hit by a bus, for the free tuition or the guaranteed passing grades or the absolute lavished attention one receives when something terrible happens. Lennon might have wished it for other reasons, but when Greer disappeared, her heart all but shattered in her chest. This is the one person who seemed to know just how fucking hard the mask was to keep securely in place at all times. Throughout their friendship and subsequent living arrangement, the pair had gotten to know one another like no one could even imagine. Lennon had even begun to see the moments when Greer almost released the white-knuckled grasp she kept on her public image. It is, of course, worth noting that no one knew Greer like Lennon did. Knows Greer like Lennon does… whatever, the point is that her secrets were scrawled on the inside of Len’s mind as much as her own. She saw so much of what went on in her life that her opinions of people changed quicker than the seasons. All she wanted was for Greer to share things with her rather than her having to find them out herself. Over and over again, she proved to keep the mask on more often than not. Would it have killed Greer to want to be as close to Lennon as Lennon wanted to be to her?

I've just finished watching the Netflix adaptation of "All Quiet on the Western Front" and I have some thoughts. The first one being - I haven't seen such marvelous screen adaptation in a while, despite the changes introduced to the plot. So if you're any interested in what I have to say, let me elaborate.

I'm a big fan of anti-war literature, though "fan" might be a bit of a strange way of phrasing it. But I've read enough of the "genre classics" to have some general knowledge of how those stories are usually developed (might be just me being Easter European. Specifically Polish. We know something about wars.) And AQotWF is one of my favourites, alongside "Catch 22" and "King Rat." Throughout the whole movie I was in awe of how well it translates the atmosphere of the book. How well it establishes the characters, especially Kat (I'll talk about the characters later.) You immediately submerge into their world, you feel for them and you're anxious whenever they go into battle. My big problem with modern movies is how they just don't let you connect with the characters by rushing the plot. Here it's not a thing. AQotWF says exactly what it wants and how it wants.

The visuals are spectacular. I took some screenshots I'm planning on redrawing due to how beautifully filmed this movie is. And, finally, it's not too dark!! You can see what's happening even in scenes located in bunkers or taking place at night! I freaking missed that so much. The same goes for sound - you understand what the characters say (my knowledge of German is VERY limited, still I often didn't need the subtitles because the dialogues were recorded clearly.) The lighting does miracles, it perfectly supports the mood. The usage of colour is great. I'm a big fan of close-up shots (details can add so much) and I love how this movie delivers the best of it, with focusing on the faces and especially eyes.

The music deserves its own paragraph. Scarce, used only when needed, but what an effect it gives... Again, one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a while. There wasn't a single scene where I thought to myself "can y'all cut the damn music", which happens to me more often than I wish it did. Especially the main theme uses a lot of sounds that remind of metal, of shots and explosions, perfectly matching what you see. And the music in the very last scene is just beautiful and gentle. I heard something similar in my head while finishing the book. Peace and relief.

Costumes? So damn good. Finally a movie where the costumes are well-made, with precision and care. Another reason why it's so easy to immediately get into the presented world - you just believe it's real due to what you see. Hairstyles, clothes, make-up. Everything is very realistic.

The same goes for the special effects, both in terms of explosions/shots and the corpses. The scene with tanks and flamethrowers was a shocking experience even to me, someone used to war movies, due to how real it seemed. The tanks emerge from the mist like animals, some kind of monsters. Mind you, WW1 was the first time tanks were used and they weren't as common as in WW2. The absolute hysteria of the soldiers is so real because they indeed had no idea what to do while facing a tank. The sets are very detailed, the bleak views of the battlefield and faded, winter forests are again a visual masterpiece.

Now the changes. To me the most questionable change done was Kat's death. I prefer the book version - it was more moving. On the other hand, the nonsense of his death in the movie creates his own quality. He survived a war waged by adult men just to be killed by a boy over a few eggs. Eggs that for both sides might mean either survival or death of starvation. It wasn't the stupid generals, bullets and tanks that were his end - the poor farmer boy who knew his family will starve was. Still, I'd prefer to see the book version of events. While reading I was touched by Paul's desperation and dedication to saving his friend, and by Kat who wasn't able to tell Paul that he's been hit in the head, meaning that the wound was fatal. Paul's endeavour in carrying Kat across the battlefield, at some point already a dead body, was a great summary of how during war your effort might mean nothing just because you happen to be unlucky. If it was about skill, Kat would survive. From all of them, Kat should. But he was unlucky that one damn time. When the war was basically over, he lost his own.

Another difference was the fate of Tjaden. In the book, it was Kemmerich who was shot in the leg and died because of an amputation. Here, we have Tjaden who got shot, though he doesn't let the wound kill him - he commits suicide using a fork. A pretty brutal scene I was kind of expecting at the very secnd I saw the way he looked at the fork in his hand. Interesting take on human desperation - he didn't want to live as a disabled person as it would make it impossible for him to work as a policeman (his biggest dream.) This change is quite alright with me. I know it was probably done to not introduce more characters (Kemmerich), though I'd like to see the motive of the boots being taken by Müller and then given to Paul when Müller died as well. The conflict between not wanting your friend to die and such a down-to-earth matter like wanting better boots, in the end turning out to be meaningless, is an important thing to include. Still, the change wasn't that significant and it certainly wasn't a negative one.

And then Paul's death. I really appreciate the fact that the main character of the story dies because that was the only way for his story to end. And he dies at the very end of the war, as if because he had nothing else to do. He wasn't able to return to his old life. There was nothing left of it - at that point his mother was probably already dead due to her illness and he couldn't just go back to his town and live like nothing happened. Especially surrounded by people like his father, who didn't understand the changes done to him by the war. Paul's friends were dead. He'd be able to live with that, even though there was no one left of his class. Who would he study with? But Kat was gone too and that was too much. Paul gladly accepts his death because he's died already a long time ago, during the first time on battlefield. What was left after that was a moving body that didn't have much in common with the joyful student who'd once inhabited it.

The gesture of climbing up the stairs of the bunker, into the light of the day, is a beautiful visual metaphor. We walks around the trenches and in the background we see soldiers of both sides just sitting or gathering their dead. A second ago they were killing each other. But now it's 11 o'clock. Now it's peace. And the young boy, so similar to Paul from the beginning of the movie, takes his scarf, a scarf that has once belonged to someone else, someone who had died way earlier and who was known by Paul, not by the boy. The object is carried on even though the memory died. One of my favourite things added to the movie.

To sum things up - spectacular movie. Very worth watching, even if you're not into this genre. And if you haven't read the book, do yourself a favour and read it. It's not very long and I believe it's one of the stories you just should know.
