A study on prosecutors -- (previous) (next)
Let's get into the weeds of the Investigations games.
Judging any of the prosecutors in the Investigations games, Edgeworth included, is a difficult thing to do. We're not privy to their style of prosecuting, after all, since the whole game takes place outside of any trials. I guess this shows how much stock I take from said trials, but it is a core mechanic to the Ace Attorney series, so I feel justified on that one. Judging a prosecutor from half of the usual info makes things a bit of a harder sell to me, they really missed an opportunity to get us into the courtroom properly.
But I digress. Let's go down the list.
First off, Jacques Portsman. He's a first case villain for sure, as we know he committed the crime and his over the top performance is really grating. I kinda never believed him when he claimed to be a prodigy or some up and coming star because of that, though. Like, sir, you're a first case murderer. You're not that hard to crack, especially as the game has to tutorialise everything for us.
His being pretty awful is kinda the point, however. Here is one of many prosecutors whom Edgeworth has to work alongside in the office. He's as corrupt and ruthless as anyone else, he's another in the many who believe that winning and making a name for themselves is all that matters in the world of the law. He's a symptom of the way the law operates in this world, far from the cause. That's at least one fascinating aspect to him.
It's yet another show of how Manfred could have gotten away with his forty year streak without anyone so much as batting an eye at it.
Speaking of, let's dig into Manfred a bit deeper, seeing as he's the only other prosecutor we really meet in the first game. (Faraday gets like one line before he dies, so I can't really count him.) He's acting Edgeworth's superior here, no matter how much Edgeworth refers to him as his mentor. This is a disconnect that always struck me about what we get to see of their interactions; Edgeworth really does respect Manfred from the bottom of his heart. He sees Manfred as someone who helped him find structure and strength in his life after what happened to his father. But Manfred doesn't return that respect at all. Really, a lot of how Manfred speaks to Edgeworth here reads as condescending, and that's before he goes off about how worthless Edgeworth is. His promise of an hour of recess is also one that stood out to me; he expects Edgeworth to partake in some of the dirtier tactics that he (and Franziska) might. He's leaving that option open for Edgeworth to do whatever necessary to get his guilty verdict, to prove himself a perfect von Karma. It doesn't end up happening because we have to preserve continuity -- I mean, the trial gets cancelled due to murder shenanigans, but it's a detail that's always stood out to me.
We get a lot more intriguing a look into Manfred's character in the second Investigations game. He adores his wife to the point of proclaiming her the best chef in the world. That's weirdly humanising for him!! And he loves his daughter, too, even if he's not very good at showing it. He may be a wicked man, but it wasn't actually by his own hand that he had to tamper with evidence. Hell, maybe that's why Gregory was able to call him out. (He forged a WHOLE BODY and that'll forever be hilarious to me.) (Well, an autopsy report. Same difference.) What I would GIVE to be able to see the actual trials between Gregory and Manfred, with Gregory struggling to find any hold and Manfred acting composed while also hoping his evidence doesn't get called out. It had to be one hell of a battle, Gregory isn't one to go down without a fight.
Anyway, Byrne Faraday. I figure I might give a bit of a thought on him from what we can extrapolate.
Kay loved him dearly and he was definitely doing his best by her. That promise notebook they had between them is so sweet, the man was trying his best to be a good dad. He had some level of corruption, though, considering he was one foot to the Yatagarasu. Sure, it was more for justice than our usual prosecutor fare, but he was still cheating to get guilty verdicts. Even if his corruption swung the other way than where we're used to seeing, it shows he was willing to get his hands dirty for his justice. It shows his lack of faith in the legal system he was a part of, another symptom to this dark age. (As an aside, these two games are the true lead-in to Dual Destinies. Not Apollo Justice. You want the themes and points of DD to ring stronger or truer at all? Play the Investigations games before going into DD, it'll all make more sense that way. Or, as much sense as it can make.)
It is fun seeing how much they have to strain to get us to like Faraday, though. At least, I feel he's supposed to be likeable, since they focus on him being a good dad and not the fact that he was working behind the scenes to help rig his trials. A perfect contrast to Manfred, whom the games don't even try to make likeable since we all know what becomes of him in the end. And yet they put in just enough to get you to see him as less a monster than you might have. (The Inga solution! It works on me every time!!)
Also funny that there are only two new prosecutors introduced in the first Investigations game and they're both basically bit parts. Because then we get into the second game and meet our more traditional opposing prosecutor, Sebastian Debeste.
Ahh, Yumihiko Ichiyanagi. A mess of a child. Starts out pompous and believing he's always right because that's what everyone around him is forced to say to him. He's a nepotism baby, his dad's the Chief of the Prosecutorial Investigation Committee, after all. He's a brat and a pest and he's also so stupid you find yourself wondering how the hell he managed to get his badge in the first place.
Well, this is a world of dumbasses, you suppose. How else could simple logic be a superpower? You move on and concern yourself more with whom you suspect to be the true villain pulling the strings here, Justine Courtney.
Her subtle pushes and buttering Sebastian up are near sinister. It's like she's using him as a mouthpiece at times, a way to get her own goals and work done here. She wants to seemingly destroy Edgeworth, nearly singularly focuses on this goal at times, and you can't help but find pity for Sebastian being caught up in her scheme. He's seventeen and it shows far more on him than it does on Klavier or Franziska. He's floundering while everyone simply congratulates him on a job while done, unable to save him from those depths, that darkness.
What is the point of using this boy as a smokescreen, you wonder. How can parading him around be worth any of his foolishness?
Then we meet Blaise and realise, oh. He really was just a pawn in the grander scheme. He was a way to get closer to the true villain. He was merely getting in the way, being a foolish and stupid child, of everyone's true goals.
Franziska whips him and he doesn't even protest. He shouts out in pain like everyone else, but he never once tells her to stop. He just takes it, doesn't think of his usual profession of being the best.
He just takes it.
From that small detail alone, I couldn't help but immediately worry for him.
Justine shows her hand at last. Even if she had come to care for Sebastian, she's out to strike Blaise down no matter what. Blaise is the one behind that one strike against Manfred's reputation, he's behind this whole smuggling ring, he's everyone's antagonist as we all converge on this one point. Sebastian tries to stick up for his father, but even that lends to our favour. He gets in the way once more, he slips up just enough to give us what we need, and his father reveals to him in the cruellest possible way that everything he thought he's accomplished has been a total lie. He couldn't even be a worthy pawn to his father. He's a failure, through and through.
And Edgeworth gets to be the one to help him stand back up on his own two feet.
I cannot stress enough just how excellent an idea it was to have our final logic chess game be against Sebastian. How we have to use it more as a way to break through all that despair and anguish instead of for our own gain. Edgeworth being able to be a voice of strength for Sebastian, being able to offer this boy you thought your enemy for most of the game a spot of hope, is so good. It's exactly taking the lessons behind what made Edgeworth himself so good in the first game, at least in my opinion.
And we get to see bits of an actual trial!! We get to play assistant as Sebastian stands up to his father in one of the most hype scenes ever!! I'm so proud of this fail boy who came such a long way. A crybaby who, with the help of those actually willing to back him up and show him the right way instead of propping him up with false praise, is able to stand his ground and prove his father the villain he is.
He breaks that chain of legacy tying so many of our Ace Attorney characters down. Holy shit we were robbed this game, actually, huge shout out to the translation team who allowed us all to experience this cathartic moment.

A really dumb scene came to me for a revival au where Gregory is  brought back from the dead ( through possession or what) around the time Manfred gets released from prison. Basically it’s just Gregory and Manfred driving to the offices they used to work at, it being the first time they’ve been properly allowed alone. Unsure what to do, one of them press the radio to fill the silence.  Shot through the heart plays. The most awkward eye contact is made.  The radio is turned off. Silence.

Isn't it all about time?
We all at some point in our life have realised that we have invested our time into wrong people, but instead of regretting over the past mistakes, we should move on and give ourselves as much time as we can because we would regret we never have enough, it's always good to be late than never.

Crippled Canary & the Carrion Crow
A gift for @bitterkarmaa / @sinistershepherd for their Karma's Bitter SAMS au! I had an idea for Rays and KC so i wrote this up rq, hope you enjoy!
(Also on AO3!)
Rays was never one to question his life choices which was a funny thing really, when one took into account his life prior to being here. But then that old life had been all he knew, and had accepted as just being the way it was no matter how cruelly he was treated.
Never occured to Rays that in another world entirely he'd be loved and cared for, looked after and not tormented or thrown about like a ragdoll or a plaything, a toy like that owned by a careless child.
It was a life beyond his imagination, a concept that seemed so alien and so impossible that even whe he found himself stepping onto floors made of soft blue instead of hard golden marble he thought he was dreaming or perhaps he had died and this was the afterlife.
He hadn't believed heaven to be real, but in that fleeting moment he had.
But Rays was going off track here with his thoughts.
Because right now he was standing frozen to the spot in the middle of the lost and found area that lay below the theatre of the pizzaplex he now called home, the sounds of glitching vocalisers and heavy thuds of footsteps ringing loudly in his audio receptors just beyond the doorway.
The scarred yellow animatronic had absolutely no clue what it was. A monster of somekind? He had seen plenty of those. But whatever this was, was unlike anything he had heard before and that scared him even more. And what made it worse was the fact it sounded like there was multiple of them.
His damaged rays twitched in an almost attempt to pull in, but Rays grabbed hold of them to prevent them doing so. Not only did it hurt but he was well aware of the noise they would make and he did not want to draw whatever was outside in here.
And that is where his current questioning of life came in. It was very early morning. Stupidly early really. While Ray's internal clock was all but shot, he had memorised the time anyway so he knew it to be around four in the morning.
He had woken up around three, an hour prior and was unable to go back to sleep. He had considered finding Eclipse and staying with him, but he had bothered him enough as of late and he especially didn't want to disturb him this time knowing full well the dark orange and black animatronic would be asleep this time.
So Rays decided to go and visit the lost and found area. Alone.
It was not the first time. In fact he had memorised the route after Eclipse took him down there a number of times and so he started going by himself. It was scary at first for sure but the route and area had grown familiar now so he felt little fear going down by himself.
Until now that is.
The sounds outside continued, but they started to fade a little as whatever it, they were moved further away. Rays released a skirt he had been holding back into the pile and slowly stood up his mind racing with options on what to do, and it took all his willpower to not simply panic and run as fast as he could back up to the theatre. He had no idea how fast the thing was afterall.
So he waited, and stood very still listening. He was good at that. A learned skill picked up when his old master was in a sour mood. The sounds of metal creaking and glitched vocals combined with the heavy thud thud thud of footsteps were still present but growing more distant.
Finding a spark of courage upon seeing a potential escape slot, Rays very tentatively moved and crept over to the doorway leading out. The door was left partly open still and thankfully made no noise as Rays carefully pushed it open a little more to peek outside.
There was no sign of anything, no monsterous amalgamation, no scary eyes in the dark. He could see not too far away the endo skeletons that hung from their racks limp and unmoving. Rays shuddered at the sight of them. They always unnerved him.
But it seemed he had his timeslot, so he swiftly but silently as he could slipped out of the room, not daring to close the door all the way as to not risk the click of it shutting draw any attention to his location. Instead Rays left it pushed just to, before briskly moving across the room and toward the stairs.
But it only took the smallest movement in the corner of Rays eye accompanied by a loud screech of metal on metal for any and all self control to evaporate from Rays body altogether as the last thread of his nerves finally snapped. He bolted.
This proved to be a mistake as whatever was behind him let out a garbled noise of static and a high pitch shriek that made Ray's head hurt enough to almost make him stop. But he pushed through the pain and continued his desperate dash up the stairs.
However the yellow animatronic had only made it up one flight, before turning and instantly colliding with something big. Rays let out a small yelp and he fell back clutching his face and head with small whine, dazed and sore as the impact flared up old scars.
But he was not given much time to process as whatever he ran into suddenly moved and instantly Rays was back on the adrenaline fueled panic, scrambling back as far as he could before his back hit the wall.
Realising he was trapped, Rays could only stare in horror as the tall being turned toward him, a pair of eerie red eyes staring down at him. For a brief fleeting moment Rays thought that it was Moon, as he noticed a familiar pattern of stars on blue fabric that the being appeared to be clothed in.
Hope flared and Rays almost called out in relief. But it faded as quickly as it came as Rays realised just how off this 'Moon' looked. For one it was far too tall, with a grin that was way too sharp for comfort.
Now Moon had sharp teeth sure, in fact they all did it was a built in feature for all their models to be able to switch between sharp and blunt teeth, but only a few chose to keep them in constant. Bloodmoon and Eclipse were the prime examples.
But this… thing whatever it was did not look normal. The teeth were jagged and crooked, the smile stretched too wide even for a robot. Its arms that hung loosely by its sides were long and gangly with claws at the end of its equally long fingers.
One of its pant legs was ripped too, exposing a hocked leg beneath, and the robotic look of it was the only confirmation Rays got that this was indeed another robot. Or at least it looked like one. For all Rays knew, it could be an eldritch being. And he had seen plenty of those.
But this was nothing like what Rays had seen before, a creature that looked so familiar and yet so horrifyingly different. And he had seen many horrors. Many that on any other day he would say were even scarier than this, but right now this truly was the most terrifying thing Rays had seen in a long time.
The way it looked, and the way it stood… It was like looking at a walking corpse. A zombie.
Staring up at it with full blown eyes, Rays sat frozen on the spot unable to look away. The thing, undead robot, whatever it was, tilted it's head with a small click as it regarded the trembling yellow animatronic before it.
Then it moved, a slight shudder running through its frame as it took a step closer to Rays who like a deer in the headlights remained almost completely still, a faint tremor running through his entire body being the only movement he made.
The creature extended a clawed hand toward him, and Rays instinctively flinched and shut his eyes tightly, awaiting the all too familiar feeling of claws running across his face, digging fresh grooves and reopening the old ones.
But there was no pain. Instead what followed was a surreal but still - albeit more new - familiar feeling of something very gently running across the top of his head, caressing his battered rays. Rays' risked opening a single eye, and then the other because he couldn't really see well with just one.
The moon lookalike had kneeled down with an arm extended and it was… petting him? Rays still terrified looked up at its face, and saw that it looked almost… confused? Unsure? It was hard to tell given the low lighting and the soft glow of the red eyes partially obscuring its features but…
It wasn't hurting him. It was being gentle. Safe? Was it a friend?
Rays shuddered as the nerves eased slightly and he leaned into the gentle touch. He was still scared, and very confused but. It wasn't trying to hurt him. Maybe it was friendly afterall. Eclipse certainly looked scary at times, a lot of the time actually but he was still kind to him, showed him patience. The way this robot petted him was a lot like how Eclipse would too.
The sounds of metal screeching and loud footsteps snapped Rays out of his thoughts and his panic flared up in full once again. He gasped and flinched, the tall robot before him also flinching but not making a sound, other than a sharp snap as its head turned quickly in a full 180 degrees.
The creature released a low gutteral growl and Rays immedietely shrank back, unable to hold back a terrified whimper. The eldritch looking robot seemed to pause, and it turned around to regard Rays for a moment before it's voicebox released an odd noise, a weird warbled chirrup of some kind and it extended both its hands toward him.
Still locked into a state of panic, Rays could only stare helplessly as he found himself scooped up into the large pair of arms and tucked against a large cold chest. Then it moved and Rays experienced the very jarring sensation of being carried, oh wait he was being carried.
Had… had anyone actually carried him before?
A whirlwind of emotion and conflictions swam within Rays, his mind growing exhausted from the panic. But memories from a time long long ago were quickly beginning to surface, having been buried for well over a century.
A distant one, one from perhaps his earliest days of existence came to the front of his addled mind. A young ai stumbling onto the ground, having just been freshly made and still figuring how how to use the body it had been given.
Shaking from the cold marble ground, with so many limbs and digits to control, so much to process. The light around them was so bright it burned their new eyes. They had never seen light before and it hurt. Everyhing had been too much, and so they curled up into a shivering ball wanting it all to stop.
And then. They were lifted from the cold hard ground, a rough but gentle hand running across their head and soft words they could not yet understand but latched onto anyways soothing their overstimulated mind, easing the burden of thought. A darkened chest provided an escape from the burning light, and the warmth driving away the chill that had gripped their new form.
Safe. it.. they… he.. she… was safe.
Rays felt like they were floating, their head filled with soft cotton and pillows that insulated his mind and her body surrounded by warmth. He had never felt so at peace before. He wanted this to last forever.
But the call of the waking land tugged at the edge of his mind, drawing him out from the soft paradise he was in. He let out a soft whine, but a hand on his head gave a small gentle rub followed by a small mumble from someone who sounded like they were still mostly asleep.
Rays cracked open his eyes, finding his face to be resting against a dark coloured side. A glance up confirmed it to be Eclipse who was indeed still asleep, his arm wrapped securely around Rays and holding him close.
Rays blinked, his memory foggy from sleepiness. Where…? Wasn't he in the theatre? Below it? Or was it all a dream? He recalled briefly glowing red eyes, and large gangly claws. But funny enough the memory did not spark any fear. He couldn't recall the face of whoever or whatever it was.
Maybe his sleep addled mind was showing him a weird amalgamation of Bloodmoon and Moon. Certainly bore a striking resemblance to at least one of the two.
Well it didn't matter. Rays was still tired and the warmth and reassurance of not being alone, being safe and secure was lulling him back to sleep. He did not fight it, and instead allowed himself to slip back into the land of soft pillows.
Unseen by the now peacefully sleeping yellow robot and Eclipse who held him secure, a large form slipped quietly out of the room, closing the door with a soft click.

A study on prosecutors -- (previous) (next)
Second, Franziska.
Franziska is a really, really interesting case. Not only is she someone who is coloured by our experiences with our two previous prosecutors (Edgeworth and Manfred), she's also the prosecutor we spend the least amount of time in trial against. Her debut game has her headlining only two of the four trials. She gets exactly one more trial in the next game and even then, it's a single day and not even against Phoenix. She has the least amount of time to make her impression on us, and so every single moment she's onscreen has to count.
And boy, do they ever make it count!
Gumshoe is, once again, our introduction to her presence. I find it a bit weird that they leave enough room for ambiguity on whether or not Manfred's kid is his son or something. Playing with the player's expectations, I guess? It's weird but I guess it's brushed over completely once Franziska is revealed, so it's not too much of a sticking point.
But then we meet her in court and she is as absolutely as much of a menace as advertised. She's as much in control of the proceedings as her father, using her whip instead of his iron fist, and focused wholly on perfection. You get a real bases on what growing up as Manfred's protege would be like from her mannerisms; she acts like a princess, like the only person in the room with any importance, and she wears it proudly. You can't help but admire how much of a bastard she presents herself as. She's willing to get in there and do the work herself rather than relying on anyone else; what a first impression to make.
This is, of course, helped along by her dubiously legal steps. She hides the existence of the second photo, she presents a completely illegal photo only to then claim that it's not actual evidence she's presenting. Her brazen display of dirty tactics is infuriating, it's a reflection on her father's own ruthlessness. It even puts into perspective Edgeworth's own ruthlessness, though he certainly never stepped this far past the line of legality. At least, the way he was presented to us, it never felt like he actually did anything illegal.
The key point, though, is that she makes us feel helpless. About as helpless as Manfred did (and maybe Edgeworth in 1-2, though your mileage may vary on that one). Our immediate response should be to treat her just as hostilely, to suspect her of falling to some sort of ruin just the same as her father.
But then, day two of the trial arrives. And instead of fighting tooth and nail, Franziska starts to go along for the ride.
You might not think anything of it at first. Phoenix certainly doesn't. She's still biting, still snapping and forcing you to prove every argument you throw out there. She isn't one to yield so easily, she demands perfection even when you're unravelling her supposedly perfect case. And yet, with each push, she gives in just enough to allow you footholds. She sees your logic and doesn't discount it. She even follows along, agrees with you as you piece together this mystery.
She's more willing to work with you than you ever expected considering her demeanour in that first trial day. She's just as interested in figuring out the whole truth as you are. It really surprised me, going back to this game and seeing just how willing she is to follow your working out the mystery. She's so agreeable that second day that it speaks of some knowledge, some spot of light in her that flares up in defiance of every method Manfred ever used. She's still too close to the line of illegal, she's still willing to get into some dirty methods herself, but she's not willfully blind to the truth. She's able to understand that what you're proposing makes sense.
She's still a child. She's barely an adult and it shows that she's in far less danger than Manfred or Edgeworth were to that looming darkness.
(Is it her inexperience? Is it her headstrong defiance of falling into the same trap her father did? No matter the reasoning, it makes her less of an antagonist than she should be seen as. It makes it clear that we can reach her, that she's not someone to condemn in the same way we did Manfred.)
We can't really begin to trust her. Not yet. She's a wild card, she's still threatening to crush us under her heel.
But she has more humanity by the end of this trial than Edgeworth or Manfred displayed at the end of their first appearances. And before we know it, we're susceptible to being endeared to her as someone we could form an allyship with.
Case three is kind of a mess overall, but I appreciate Franziska's presence in it keeping these crazy clowns on track. For the most part, at least. She whips even Phoenix into staying focused when Ben, Trilo, and Moe would force us into a detour. Perhaps it's a smart choice in contrasting her with these characters, as it makes her a lot more reasonable looking after her introduction. Yeah, she did something pretty illegal to prove Maya's spirit channelling technique, but she's also taking no nonsense from these clowns and it goes a long way towards me appreciating her presence here in this case. (Anything to get through this painful first day, really.) I really can't blame her for manipulating Moe's testimony because she would have to be crazy to let him explain to the court how he saw the culprit fly off into the sky.
And then we run into her at the crime scene during the investigation and her motivations become loud and clear.
There was a sort of suspicion from the beginning, of course. Phoenix and Maya both told her that seeking revenge for her father made no sense and each time she made no comment towards it. She simply brushed it off and continued on as if they never mentioned her father.
But here, she explains it's not for her father she's doing any of this. It's for Edgeworth.
Edgeworth, whom she believes can't be dead.
It's a brilliant moment, really, tying her in a sibling rivalry sort of dance with our previous rival turned ally. It really informs how her mannerisms and her approach to trials can be so similar and yet so different to Manfred's. How she can be so obsessed with perfection and yet allow us to figure out the truth to each case. She's a perfect blend of both of them and suddenly she's the little sister, the one left behind, the one chasing after something that no longer really exists.
It's almost tragic, really. I started liking her in this moment; understanding a character can go a long way towards endearing you to them.
The second day of the trial is much the same as the second day of case 2's. Franziska is far too willing to allow us to theorise on what happened, challenging us enough to make us prove what we're saying. Her incredulousness at the reveal of the actual method of murder is warranted, but she can do nothing else but acquiesce to the truth of it all.
She's a sore loser. Another flaw in her perfect veneer. Where as in the second trial it was infuriating, this time it's enough to make you feel sorry for her. Someone overstepped her authority, she shot herself in the foot by figuring out the truth and trapping the true culprit in an unwinnable scenario. It was Edgeworth pulling some strings, but she still went right along with it, convinced she was absolutely right.
Thus, we come to the final case of her debut.
It should have been suspicious, looking back, how much of her we saw during the initial investigation. She's running herself to overdrive in order to win this case. Her previous two losses sting far too much; she's willing to fire Gumshoe for it, to charge recklessly ahead, to make a deal that could have killed a woman just to get her victory. Her complicated relationship with Edgeworth comes out in full force with his appearance and oof there is so much good stuff there with him and Phoenix in this scene. (As an aside, I really love how this case portrays Phoenix barely holding himself back from having a panic attack when Maya is kidnapped. It's so good how it portrays his vision going, how it portrays him freezing up, how he can barely hold himself together. Chef's kiss, delicious, I love it, that's got nothing to do with Franziska's character portrayal lol.) She is continually running away from us in this investigation and it shows how doggedly she's working on setting up all her pieces just to topple us.
And, hey! You know the quickest way to endear us to someone we're nearly convinced on? Just have them get shot!
In all seriousness, it is a shocking moment, hearing that De Killer's "gift" to us was having her shot. It sets up an immediate reversal of roles; yes, we never planned for this, we didn't even ask for this, but we're the ones employing the barely legal tactics now. We're the ones who have some dirty methods clinging to the backs of our minds in our efforts to win at all costs.
Being cast in the same light as she was in that second trial is another great moment of understanding. Suddenly, you can't fully blame her for what she does. Condemning her would mean condemning ourselves, even when the circumstances are vastly different. At least, that's certainly how I felt. I can't blame her for her illegal tactics when I'm out here with a gun to my head. It's the same sort of pressure, isn't it? To be hounded by an perfectionist who accepts only victory. To be hounded by an assassin with a noose around our girl's neck.
Clearly, Phoenix also understands this on some level. Otherwise, why would he take her flowers when going to visit her in the hospital? (Phoenix is such a kind person he's even willing to make nice to someone who whipped him into unconsciousness. Another point towards endearing Franziska to us, really.)
The ending of this case and Franziska's big damn hero moment really seal the deal. She comes in at the last second with everything we need both to prove Engarde's guilt and save Maya from De Killer. Her inability to understand our joy afterwards also speaks of a want for growth, a want to chase this light we've shown her, but her headstrong nature won't allow it. Her conversation with Edgeworth at the airport really seals the deal, too. She's become our ally, whether she wanted to or not.
Honestly, I think she's all the more fascinating for her stalwart refusal to admit that she's as endeared to us as we are to her. She's the type of character I've grown to love writing, so she definitely made her impression on me with this.
Her appearance in the next game is such a triumph, too. She's the same headstrong, defiant wild card, but she's accepted her position as our ally. She speaks of crushing Phoenix, of finally having her chance to battle against him and Edgeworth, yet it's undeniable how much fun she's having while we walk around with her. It's undeniable how she's working with Edgeworth in the same manner she did on the second day of her trials when fighting Edgeworth in court. She's here and she's going to make it our problem in an affectionate way.
Anyway yeah I love Franziska she's such a fun character.

I spent some 10 months working in this retail supermarket shop that's close to home and after quitting the only experience that's stayed with me is those rare few times when i would see other queer people just existing in public. Maybe it's because I'm kind of a coward and could never be that openly out, or the environment in this area of the city that I know is very christian and very hostile (the things that i've heard my coworkers saying...) but I came to treasure those rare moments in a very special way. It can feel kinda lonely here, where sometimes it seems like it's just me and the friends I met in artschool and the people in other areas that i see on instagram, weirdly far away from me, and knowing that it'll be decades before we achieve anything meaningful in this country, but seeing someone being so open and brave like that makes me wanna keep going y'know? Maybe someday I'll live in a future where my teacher from artschool didn't have to travel to the USA to get married, and I can go to the beach with my friends and have twin scars on my chest.

Tumblr media
Group 4 + “I have food in my bag”
"Shit, we're running late!" Sugino swore under his breath, adjusting his grip on his bag and quickening his pace.
It was already 8:17 and they were still ten minutes away from the base of the mountain. On top of that, there was still the long trek to get up to the classroom.
"Slow down, Sugino," Kayano whined from far behind. She dragged her schoolbag onto the sidewalk tiredly. "Some of us don't have long ass legs like you!"
"Do you have to drag your bag like that?" Nagisa questioned, wincing at the scraping sound it was making. "Isn't your laptop in there?"
"Actually, I forgot it at home today."
Sugino threw his hands up in the air, exasperated. "Well, aren't we all having a great, productive day so far?"
Somehow, by a universal phenomenon that had to be the opposite of a miracle, the three of them had woken up late. And experienced various degrees of a chaotic morning that stalled their time to get to class.
Sugino had to run two blocks to pick up his mother's dry-cleaning, before getting stopped by the local kids at the park who wanted some baseball tips. It was Saturday, so not many elementary-grade kids had to go to school.
Nagisa had an emergency, no-prior-notice tutoring session with an anxious Sakura.
And Kayano's agent had come randomly earlier, imploring her to pause her break and take a once-in-a-lifetime role offer. She declined, of course. Then she went on to binge three episodes of her current k-drama, which was recommended by Ritsu. Eventually, she realized what time it was and survival instinct kicked in.
Long story short, all three had run into each other at the same time, rushing down the street to get to school.
"It's not like this happens everyday, though," Nagisa tried to comfort him. "I'm sure Korosensei will understand."
"Yeah...true."
They reached a busy intersection and were forced to stop as the light was green. The hectic morning traffic rushed in front of them, and the familiar hum of cars flying by eased Sugino's tension a little.
He wasn't really sure why he felt so stressed. Nagisa was right. Korosensei was more than likely to understand and not mark them tardy, as this was a pretty rare occurrence. Besides, a certain redhead he knew was more often absent than not.
Speaking of him... Sugino's brows furrowed when he spotted a flash of familiar red across the street, near some bushes.
Standing beside him, Kayano squinted. "Is that who I think it is?"
"If it is him, I'm not surprised he's late too," Nagisa commented dryly, taking a swig of his water bottle.
"It's probably not him," Sugino decided, impatiently willing the light to turn red already. The sun was fully risen by now and beating over his head. He felt sweat droplets start to fall down his neck and his ire increased.
It was odd to say, but Sugino actually strongly valued routine. It didn't suit his lax, easygoing and fun appearance, but a rigid routine was built into him ever since he started playing baseball. He liked some sense of predictability in his daily life.
So today, where everything was going wrong somehow, was creating a heaviness in his chest.
Finally, the crosswalk sign flashed to indicate they could start walking. Sugino basically ran across the street in relief, choosing to ignore Kayano's insults targeted towards his longer legs.
“Hey, jerk! Wait for us!”
He laughed in response and bolted down the sidewalk, acting out of pure adrenaline and annoyance. He glanced back over his shoulder to see the other two walking normally after him.
Thud!
Suddenly, ran into something and fell onto the pavement. It wasn't hard per say, but it was definitely a body.
"Oof!" The person exclaimed, more in surprise than pain.
Sugino felt his face flush, already prepared to apologize. He already began spouting off before looking up.
"Sorry about that-wait, Kanzaki?" He did a double take, surprised to see one of his closest friends right across him.
She was down on the sidewalk, as well. Her bag fell near her, but nothing spilled out. Her raven locks were tied up into a makeshift bun and the look on her face was one of both surprise and annoyance.
"Good morning to you, too, Sugino-kun," She replied dryly, standing up and dusting off her skirt. She reached a hand out to him, which he took.
"Hehe, my bad," he laughed sheepishly. "So you're late today too?" His brain scrambled to find a reason for why Kanzaki of all people was late.
She gestured to behind her. "And those two."
Karma and Okuda were crouched by the bushes, both enraptured by a book in his hands.
His other two companions finally caught up. "Ahhh, Kanzaki-san!" Kayano squealed, tackling the other girl in a hug.
"Morning, Kayano-san," Kanzaki greeted warmly, grabbing Sugino's arm for support before she fell for a second time. Her other hand gently patted Kayano's head.
Okuda scrambled up at the noise, adjusting her skirt and glasses. "Ah, good morning guys!"
"OKUDA-SAN!" Kayano did the exact same and collided with her in a frightening hug.
"Wow, so the gang's all here," Karma laughed, throwing his arms around Sugino and Nagisa.
"What the hell are you guys doing out here?" Sugino asked, a smile on his face.
Even if his routine was gone and they were most definitely late for class, he couldn't really be mad surrounded by his best friends.
"We could ask you the same," Kanzaki retorted, amused. Sugino noticed her nails were painted a bright shade of purple, likely in part to annoy her parents.
"We' all woke up late," Nagisa deadpanned, deciding to simplify it. "What about you guys?"
"Had a fun idea." Karma pulled out the book he'd been holding and handed it to Nagisa. Sugino peered over his shoulder.
It was an encyclopedia for marine animals, specifically invertebrates. Sea stars, jellies, squids, clams, crabs, etc. Nagisa flipped over to the bookmarked page, which was filled with types of sea urchins. There was one name that was highlighted.
"Toxopneustes elegans," he read aloud. "Native to Japan, and highly venomous."
Sugino looked up at them with raised eyebrows. "What are you guys planning...?" He asked reluctantly.
Karma and Kanzaki both hummed and looked away innocently. Okuda fidgeted with her hands, not in a nervous way but in a "how do I explain this without looking fucking crazy" way.
"Well, I got this book as a gift yesterday. And last night I texted Karma-kun and Kanzaki-san about the interesting species of sea urchins I didn't even knew exist!"
She tugged on one of her braids, her tone shifting to a more guilty one. "And then they had the idea of extracting its poison to use on enemies and bullies."
"KARMA WHAT THE HELL!"
"Kanzaki?! You too?"
Karma scowled at their reactions. "Obviously, we'd dilute it and mix a small portion into something, so it wouldn't be that bad."
"STILL!"
Kanzaki looked away. "Some of the bullies at the arcade deserve it!"
"Oh my god." Nagisa facepalmed.
"First of all, that's insane," Sugino cried. "Second of all, where do you even get this urchin?"
Okuda let out a breath. "That's why we're late today. We were gonna go to this street market to get it. It's not as busy in the mornings..."
"Okuda, you endorse this?!"
She threw her hands up. "If it's in the name of science, I can't disagree!" She cried.
"This is about ethics!"
"Kayano, why aren't you saying anything?" Nagisa demanded.
She shrugged, leaning her head against Karma's arm. "Eh, it's not the worst fate someone can have. And maybe some people do deserve something like that..."
"Oh, so you're crazy too."
She sighed deeply and dramatically, hugging her stomach. "I'm crazy, and I'm starving. You can't ask for my opinions on morality when I'm running on low fuel!"
"And this..." Kanzaki swung her bag off her shoulder and reached inside. "Is why I always have food in my bag."
She pulled out a rolled up paper bag, crumpled from being stuffed inside and handed it to Kayano. The actress opened it up, her face lighting up at the sight of fresh gourmet pastries.
"Kanzaki, you're an angel," Kayano wept, digging into a croissant.
"It's for everyone, so make sure you share." The bag was passed around and everyone was eventually sitting on the sidewalk, enjoying them.
"Aww, thanks Kanzaki-san."
"Man, what would we do without you?"
The flaky dough instantly melted in Sugino's mouth. The combination of that and the buttery flavor almost sent him to heaven right there.
"Don't think this means you can still poison people with sea urchins though," he quickly added.
Kanzaki pouted while Karma huffed a sigh. "Fine," they conceded simultaneously.
Kayano was laying on the ground, her head resting on a bunched up sweater as she devoured her second cinnamon roll. She reached a hand over to them. "It's okay, I supported your plan."
Karma took it, amused. "Thanks, Kayano-chan. You really get me."
"Kanzaki, are these from that new fancy French place?" Nagisa asked, chewing on his cheese Danish. "The one that just opened up?"
"Yup." She was already done with her own, and was playing with the small flower buds that grew on the bush.
"Wow, we're so lucky to have a kind, generous rich friend like you," Sugino joked. "We get the high quality snacks."
"Hello? I'm here too," Karma spoke up.
Sugino smirked. "I said, a kind and generous rich friend."
"You know what, screw yo-"
