Pokémon Gym Leaders if they were from Paldea: Gen 1
Tumblr media
Ever wonder what it would be like to see the return of past Gym Leaders in Gen 9? Maybe there's a worldwide tournament that they're participating in, or maybe it's more of a group vacation.
#1 Brock
Tumblr media
Brock would be excited to try out some of the new Rock types in Paldea. Glimmora, Garganacl, and Klawf's Trap set-ups and general tankiness, plus Lycanroc's Dusk form as his speedy attacker, would make for a pretty balanced team to make-up for the lack of Fossil Pokémon in Paldea. Sudowoodo and Forretress would be there mostly as a reference to the anime, but also to show off Sturdy that is so common with Rock types. Forretress specifically would be Brock's Tera-Pokémon, paired with either Rock Tomb or Rock Slide for Brock to give to Trainers as a TM.
#2 Misty
Tumblr media
Misty's team is a good blend of familiar and new Pokémon alike. Golduck is an obvious choice considering her partner in the anime, while Whiscash offers some defense against Electric-types. Azumarill would be her heavy hitter, while Palafin and Wugtrio would offer a nice mix of speed and power. Finally, Misty would be excited to use Wooper's new evolution as a Tera-Pokémon, as Clodsire offers defense against Electric-types and can be paired with Waterfall as a last resort.
#3 Lt. Surge
Tumblr media
Lt. Surge would be throw Ampharos, Jolteon, and Raichu on his team, both for the Electric power they'd bring to his team as well as the fact that he used them during The War. He'd use Kilowattrel to speed up his team with Tailwind while also powering itself up a bit for some quick attacks, and a Hidden Ability Pawmot would offer some physical damage as well as type coverage. He'd wrap up the battle with Bronzong as his Tera-Pokémon finisher, taking advantage of Levitate to allow him to power up with Charge Beam while tanking through his opponent's attacks.
#4 Erika
Tumblr media
Erika doesn't just love Grass-type Pokémon, she loves Grass-type Pokémon that resemble plants. She'd enjoy the new dual-type pairings of Arboliva, Brambleghast, and Scovillain, while also utilizing the classic Grass-types Jumpluff and Lilligant. She'd select Stonjourner as her Tera-Pokémon for defense against Fire, Flying, and Bug types, but also because it can be used as shelf for potted plants when not in battle.
#5 Koga
Tumblr media
Being away from Kanto, Koga would want to take advantage of trying out the new Poison-types that Paldea has to offer. Did you know that Toxapex, Toxicroak, and Toxtricity all start would with "Tox"?. Because that's a large reason for their place on Koga's team. Besides that, he'd enjoy the type pairings of Grafaiai and Revavroom, although he would be a little disappointed that his personal favorite Crobat isn't in Paldea. No worries, though, because he'd have his new Noivern cosplaying as one with a Poison Tera-type. He'd also be the first Gym Leader to utilize the new move Tera Blast, which is fitting considering Noivern can't learn any Poison moves and Koga is the first Gym Leader of the back-half of the Gym Challenge.
#6 Sabrina
Tumblr media
Sabrina likes playing with dolls back home, so some of the first Pokémon she'd add to her Paldean team would be those those resembling humans, specifically Armorouge, Gallade, and Gardevoir. She'd also enjoy Rabsca and Veluza as dual-type Psychic pets that she can bring home to Kanto. Finally, because there's so many Ghost-types at her gym in Kanto, she'd use a Psychic Tera-type Mismagius to show off her spooky side.
#7 Blaine
Tumblr media
Blaine would enjoy the mix of Fire-types in Paldea to help him forget that he is a monster and a war criminal. Arcanine, Flareon, and the new form of Tauros would help keep him from getting homesick, while Torkoal can prepare the battlefield for them with Drought. Ceruledge looks quite similar to Blaine's most famous creation that murdered a bunch of people back home, so he'd enjoy using it on his team as well. Finally, Blaine seems like a weirdo who likes bugs, so a Fromantis with Fire tera-type would be a fun final addition to his team.
(NOTE: you are not a weirdo if you like bugs. Blaine is just a weirdo who happens to also like them)
#8 Giovanni
Tumblr media
Giovanni is a world-renowned criminal mastermind, so you'll find Ground-types from every region on his team rather than new Paldea-specific Ground-types. At least, this is what he tells people, and not the fact that all his fellow Gym Leaders caught the cool new Ground-Types first and he wanted to seem original. To back up this new team, Gio would also use a Persian with Ground tera-type and Dig, because he's a cat guy and that's not gonna change any time or any day.

Johto is kind of Quaint
...while symbiotic with the other regions.
Yeah, after my analysis and conclusion of Kanto being an unfortunately grimy and less-than ideal place to live (but that does make it a cool setting in its own way!), I remarked that the other 3 Japan-Regions are little slices of Ghibli vibes. But out of those, Johto feels the most tricky to actually define. The closest I can come up with is Remote, while heavily leaning on Kanto and later, Sinnoh, for more actual substance. Paradoxical, ain’t it? Let’s have a deeper look...
Imagine (or possibly, remember!) you’ve just slotted your brand new Gold or Silver into your Game Boy, after having played Gen 1 faithfully for years. How this brand new region both looks so much like what you’re used to, but there’s more colour, and an exciting new Day and Night difference. As you play, you realise the routes in between Towns are more winding and natural feeling, and even once you hit the most developed location, it’s an odd one out and a considerable distance off from the others. It ain’t just more of the same!
It’s rural and lacks the hustle and bustle of Kanto, which is a deliberate design choice. Kanto, after all, shares its very name with the real-world region that contains Tokyo, so while Johto got a new name for itself, it’s basically the Kansai region. Home of historic areas and temples, and a reputation for being laid-back and easygoing. Johto has mostly small towns that seem to pride themselves on being small and humble, and is all bordered with either dense forests, vast cordoned off ocean or a jagged mountain range. There’s even an early route to the 2nd biggest and the single most developed city, except that it’s so tree lined that even one fake-tree blocks the entire path!
Yet... Johto doesn’t feel entirely like its own thing. In a way, the contrast with Kanto is the defining feature it has, but what else is there? Is it truly a region we can consider a separate entity, or the balancing half to the urban sprawl of Gen 1? It gets weirder when you factor in the native mons, generally being unassuming and underwhelming, except for some of the best and coolest concepts, which are very strangely limited to being found only in Kanto once you gain access. The Psychic Killer type being mostly confined to the postgame is pretty crummy! That’s a pretty bad choice that ain’t even fixed in the remake, unless you know how to rig the Safari Zone... but still, you can’t walk around Johto at night to find Houndour or Sneasel? Why not?! My best guess is that it’s incentive to keep combing through the slightly shortened version of Kanto for goodies, but who’d think to look for the unseen new mons in the stomping grounds of the past? And yes, both real life and even in-game past, it’s explicitly set 3 years after the events of RGB.
What’s the deal with the level scaling and extremely sparse spread of Trainers in the later parts of the game? A poor attempt to allow for choosing your own route after Ecruteak means the 3 possible Gyms are all low levelled. You trek through an abandoned Victory Road, where the implication is that Silver scared the NPCs off with Major Character Powers, and Mt Silver (...no relation lol) is also deserted save for the surprize reveal of Red at the peak. Is Johto really that low energy that they don’t feel the urge to battle?
It may be this, honestly. Johto seems way more friendly and personable than Kanto. A whole game mechanic has you getting phone numbers for swarm info, rare items or pointless chitchat. Other than Team Rocket’s weedy attempts to re-assert their dominance, the only somewhat antagonistic characters are 2 sore loser Gym Leaders and Silver the Human. There’s even the brand new Friendship mechanic for your team, and breeding!
Overall, Johto makes me think of summer evenings. It’s exciting but in a small, cosy way. You can imagine running up a hill to reach a small house at the top with the windows glowing with yellow light and the door invitingly open. It’s also like a crisp autumn morning where the sky is clear and blue and you can leisurely sip at a hot drink. The Ruins of Alph are weird and spooky, but not in a ghostly way, but one that makes you want to unearth the mysteries. There’s tall wooden towers to climb and whirlpools to swim around. It feels like a great place to have an adventure, but also one where you can get back home in time for supper.
A very early build of GS had the region take place over a theme park version of the WHOLE of Japan, I think it’s very good that they re-planned it to be the Kansai region instead and give Kyushu and Hokkaido their own focuses later too, all these areas get a lot of loving attention to detail as a result.
As for the symbiotic traits with the fellow regions, I’ve got a lightweight summary here:
Kanto - Literal next door neighbours who are also yin and yang. A lot of Pokémon overlap and Prof Oak has much more presence in Johto than Elm, plus the whole shared Indigo League. For some reason Mt Silver is regarded as Kanto but I’d argue for it being a Johto thing lmao.
Hoenn - Less so, though the playable character (Brendan or May) is from Johto as their dad, Norman, went up enough in the ranks to be given a gym position in Hoenn instead. Hoenn thus feels bigger both figuratively and literally, having its own branch of the Pokémon League that Johto doesn’t quite manage.
Sinnoh - Similar themes of reverence for history and old myths. Again there’s a lot of Pokémon species overlapping with new Evos and Prevos. The two halves of Sinnoh being divided by a vast mountain range echoes how Kanto and Johto are geographically, plus Mt Silver is the only other place to Sinnoh with fallen snow.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, and there was the whole Embedded Tower (where you find Groudon/Kyogre/Rayquaza) and the Sinjoh Ruins that you only access with an event or hacked Arceus from the remakes! Well, I’d say they borrow more the Vibe from their respective regions, which I’ll soon cover!

What if Pokémon Legends went on to other Regions?
This has been a topic of the Pokémon fandom for awhile. With the announcement of Pokémon Legends: Arceus not too long ago, many fans are anticipating and speculating the future of this ambitious side series.
Being able to not only witness, learn and partake in the legends that shape both the regions and Legendary Pokémon, leaves much room for creativity.
This is all merely speculation.
Here's my take for how any future Pokémon Legends games could play out.
Pokémon Legends: Mew
Set about roughly 20 years before the events of Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow, the elusive Mew makes an appearance in the Kanto Region.
This prompts many scientists to want to study and catch the original Pokémon, foreshadowing the creation of Mewtwo and the Ditto.
You, the player, are taken under the wing of a much younger Professor Oak, with the Gen 1 Gym Leaders also showing up to lend a hand.
As the plot focuses on you tracking down Mew before various criminals and an older Team Rocket, try to for their own nefarious purposes. Helping Professor Oak invent the Pokédex and with his research.
Gene splicing and gene testing on Pokémon grew after the War LT. Surge fought in, with an older Team Rocket using it to their advantage.
This Team Rocket being a much bigger criminal organization, before the player took them down and a smaller one appeared in Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow.
A younger Giovanni is also present, as the player gets to know the man that would go on to lead present day Team Rocket. He's a friend to the player... for now, giving some insight on who he was beforehand and show how he took over the criminal organization, setting up the events Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow.
Mew's appearance in the Kanto region, inspires him to the point of illegal gene testing on Pokémon.
As a nod to Pokémon first debuting in 1996, the game takes on a more of a late 60s to mid 70s aesthetic, so it feels like the player is shaping the legends that set up Gen 1 of Pokémon.
Plus Kanto in the Legends artstyle would be mindblowing. And take inspiration from 60s to 70s Japan.
In addition, to avoid looking too similar to Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Being more of a modern era Japan region, than a Meiji period Japan inspired region. While following in said game's footsteps, by focusing on the secondary legendary than the main one (Mewtwo).
The starters would be Chikorita (Gen 1 is about Nature vs Technology), Torchic (Peace and War aesthetic) and Popplio (60s to 70s definitely saw a rise in many famous and popular musicians).
Pokémon Legends: Celebi
Ever wonder the origins of the Legendary Beasts: Raikou, Suicine and Entei?
What they were before they were killed in Brass Tower revived by Ho-Oh? How Ho-Oh came down and choose them, saving their lives? The sea Lugia stays in the deep for? The early days of Johto? The ruins of Alpha in the past? The early days of the Kimino Girls?
Well now you, the player, do now! ...sort of. As the title of the game implies, the player meets and befriends Celebi and gets to see many of these events via time travel.
Not only would this include a huge mechanic separate from other Legends games, but it would be the most unique in how it could be approached. As Nintendo is no stranger to time travel games (e.g. Majora's Mask) that impact both the plot and gameplay.
Time travel tends to create stories that are very confusing or very heartwrenching. Or both. But I have no doubt it would be the latter.
It also leaves room for many side quests.
Starters would be Bulbasaur (Time is all about growth), Scorbunny (Bunny Rabbits are not only a common symbol in the older days of Japan, but of Spring much like Ho-Oh) and Froakie (ninjas were more prevalent during this time period, as they slowly faded out).
Pokémon Legends: Jirachi
1000 years before the events of Pokémon Emerald, (Omega) Ruby and (Alpha) Sapphire, chaos raged across the ancient Hoenn Region, between two legendary Pokémon: Groudon and Kyogre. The Draconid people hope and pray for the arrival of Rayquaza to save the Hoenn Region itself.
This is where the player steps in: in order for all this chaos to end, the wishes of the people must be heard. And the only Pokémon capable of that is Jirachi.
The player would go around helping wishes be granted, traveling and training Pokémon along the way.
An ancestor of Zinnia also makes an appearance as a friend and rival of the player.
To maintain the wishes and stars aesthetic, Deoxys also makes an appearance with its origin being explored. Being able to explore space itself, meeting Pokémon said to have an "alien" origin, like Elgyem and Beheeyem.
Latios and Latias can also be caught, flying on them just like in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
The meteor that would hit the future Sootopolis is what awakened Groudon and Kyogre, said Meteor containing Deoxys. Setting up the game's plot.
Since it's roughly 1000 years before the Gen 3 Pokémon games, Hoenn resembles and takes inspiration from Japan during the Heian period.
The starters would be Turtwig (Theme of continents being at stake), Chimchar (Japanese and Chinese relations) and Totodile (sea monster symbolism, which is often associated with crocodiles and related animals).
Pokémon Legends: The Dragon
Two Princes, of Galar origin, known as the "Twin Heroes" share the power of an unimaginable Legendary Dragon. Bringing Truth and Ideals to the people of Unova. They live and lead from Relic Castle.
You, the player, are a friend of the princes and over the course of the game, your alliance with them changes. Struggling to choose between Truth or Ideals. Serving as a major story mechanic.
A feud and disagreement between the Princes happen, with the player being caught in the middle and to try to quell the anger of the Dragon.
In addition to finally seeing Reshiram and Zekrom before they split, Victini is also present with the Swords of Justice Pokémon (Cobalion, Virizion, and Terrakion), the Forces of Nature (Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus) and even Meloetta tries to raise people's spirits.
Team Plasma's origins are alluded to, with the army of the Princes baring an odd resemblance to the future evil team.
The game has more of a wild western aesthetic since Unova is based on New York. Think late 18th century America. With horseback riding on Pokémon like Zebstrika and Rapidash, bandits and criminals that try to steal your Pokémon and being able to explore Unova in its entirety.
Or perhaps roaring 20s to 30s America. If that setting sounds more vibrant and close to the Unova of Gen 5. This is all still speculation.
You even get to ride Keldeo in a later part of the game.
The starters would be Chespin (Chesnaught is based on a Glyptodon; fossils were found in South America), Litten (Wrestling is popular in New York) and Mudkip (mudpuppies are found in Lake Michigan).
Pokémon Legends: Diancie
Set after the Kalos War, you the player are caught in the middle of it going off to fight with your Pokémon. Hoping to make a difference as the Professor (ancestor of Professor Sycamore) takes you under his wing. And hoping to help the war turned world that is Kalos.
Yveltal and Xernas have both gone into slumber, with Zygarde needing to be restored to at least 50% (player can go to 100%), so the world of Kalos can be healed from this war.
The main game focuses on Diancie: since Diancie is the Pokémon of diamonds, the war has forced soldiers and leaders to exhaust the many resources of the Kalos region. Particularly precious stones and diamonds.
The player befriends Diancie later in the game as the two work together to bring an end the greedy hearts of those involved.
The game resembles France during the 100 Years War, with the player character even having armor as part of their attire. Due to Kalos being based off of France, roughly Middle Ages or Medieval France in this game's case.
AZ also makes a few appearances in the game, racked with grief over firing the Ultimate Weapon, mostly keeping to himself over the game's plot.
As a new gameplay mechanic, the player can befriend other trainers to amass armies to overcome many challenges, like beating other armies and crossing obstacles.
Volcanion and Hoopa are also present in the game and can be caught.
The origins of Mega Evolutions are expanded on, with the player getting their hands on some Mega Stones. Due to the energy of the Ultimate Weapon.
The starters would be Snivy (said Pokémon is based on French nobility), Piplup (Empoleon is based off of Emperors and can be a nod to Napoleon) and Charmander (Charizard is based off of European Dragons).
Pokémon Legends: Marshadow
Set in the ancient Aloha region, when Tribes followed the Tapu Pokémon, you the player find yourself stranded in this intriguing region.
Ultra space wormholes begin opening across the region and its up to the player to figure out why and how to stop them. Even being able to traverse the Ultra Megalopolis in its entirety.
Necrozma is up to it and the player must learn why. With Marshadow playing a bigger role, since most of its origin is shrouded in mystery, so this would be a great opportunity to explore those origins.
Along with the origins of the Z-Crystals.
The game has more of an ancient Polynesian world, seeing as how Aloha is based of Hawaii. Being able to sail to smaller islands and even catch Pokémon while doing so.
The starters would be Grookey (drums are a popular musical instrument in the tropics), Sobble (chameleons are native to Hawaii) and Tepig (pigs have been brought to Polynesian Islands in the past).
Pokémon Legends: Zarude
3000 years, before the events of Pokémon Sword and Shield, a black storm covers the very region itself. This black storm causes Pokémon to randomly Dynamax and Gigantamax. Many live in fear of what the next day brings, as hope of a better day seems like only a naive dream.
The player joins with many Pokémon researchers (some being ancestors of familiar faces in Pokémon Sword and Shield), in order to track down the source of this chaos.
Zarude comes in as he helps providing with resources from various forests, so less Pokémon and people are harmed. Or worse.
The player believes tracking down Zarude, will lead them to stopping this madness (Eternatus).
The game looks much like 13th to 14th century Britain, in much of the fashion of characters and even dealing with the equivalent of a plague. Ironically enough.
The starters are Treecko (Forest theme and light in the dark theme in contrast to the Darkest Days), Fenniken (Magicians are a common Middle Ages motif) and Squirtle (Cannons were first invented in Europe, around this time period).

The Pokemon Timeline theories
Generation 1 takes place at the same time as Generation 3, then three years passes; in Johto, a boy or girl is starting their Pokemon Journey; halfway on their journey, they capture the Red Gyrados. The report on the Red Gyrados appears on TV Screens in Sinnoh, thus kicking off Lucas/Dawn’s journey. Meanwhile, the Trainer who started their journey in Johto have travelled to Kanto, where some things have changed in three years: Koga has taken a spot in the Elite Four, so his daughter Janine is now in charge of the Gym; Blue, the Rival of Red three years earlier is now a Gym Leader. Eventually, after beating the Kanto Gym Leaders the Johto Trainer battles Red atop Mt. Silver. The Battle Frontier is opened in Johto and Sinnoh, and a teenage girl named Caitlin is one of the Heads. However, she leaves the battling duties to her butler. Many years later, Caitlin leaves the Battle Frontier to take up a spot in Unova’s Elite Four. Sometime after that, Hilbert/Hilda, Cheren and Bianca is starting out on their journeys across Unova; on the way, they encounter N and Team Plasma. Alder, the Unova Champion, becomes a mentor to Hilbert/Hilda and Cheren. So anyway, after Team Plasma is defeated, N decides to leave Unova; Hilbert/Hilda meets Looker, who is investigating the Seven Sages. After the Seven Sages are taken into Looker’s custody, Looker tells Hilbert/Hilda to look for N, and so they leave Unova. Two years later, Cheren becomes a Gym Leader while Bianca decides to become an assistant to Professor Juniper. A boy named Hugh is determined to find his sister’s Purrloin; at the same time Bianca is giving one of the Starters to a boy or girl in Aspertia City. A series of events which ends with N’s return and the Battle against Champion Iris is what follows; The Pokemon World Tournament is opened, against the then-known Pokemon World’s top Trainers. At the same time, a new discovery is made; The Fairy Type, in the Kalos region. A group of friends start their journeys through Kalos, fighting the Gym Leaders and Team Flare befre Calem/Serena fights against the League. After their victory, a parade is held and Calem/Serena meets the mysterious AZ, the ancient King of the region. After a battle, AZ is reunited with his Florette and they vanish. Soon after, Sina and Dexio leaves for Alola; at the same time, a boy named Gladion has stolen a Pokemon from The Aether Foundation and joins Team Skull. Twenty-one months later, a girl named Lillie steals a Cosmog from the Aether Foundation, and escapes via Teleport; she is taken in by Professor Kukui. Three months later, a Trainer from Kanto has moved to Alola with their family; the mother is half-Alolan, so she wants her kid to experience the Trials. The Trainer meets Hau, and they meet Lillie and Nebby. They then takes part in the Trials; during the Trials, Kukui reveals to the player that he is setting up a “Pokemon League for those who passes the Trials”. The player and Hau travels to the Aether Foundation where Lusamine, President of the Foundation, reveals an Ultra Beast; Nilhego. She then vanishes with Nilhego and the Trials resume. Lillie gains confidence, and after the player beats the Trials, decides to go and retrieve her mother. Nebby evolves into the Legendary, Solgaleo or Lunala, and the Player and Lillie goes into the Ultra World. They see Guzma there, and manages to retrieve both Lusamine and Guzma. Ater the Player becomes Champion, a party is held and the Player and Lillie sneaks off to find Tapu Koko; the Player battles and catches it, and return to the party. The next day, Lillie decides to travel to Kanto to try and find a way to remove Nilhego’s venom from Lusamine, and at the same time, become a Trainer. Soon after, Looker recruits the Player to help retrieve the Ultra Beasts with Annabel, who came from a different Universe. Sometime after the Ultra Beasts, the Aether Foundation is raided by an unknown third-party. The unknown person stole the blueprints for Type:Null and a Beast Ball and flee to Galar. The Beast Ball is hidden in Stow-On-Side while a fourth Type:Null is created by Marcos Cosmos. Several years later, Victor/Gloria and Hop are Endorsed by Leon, to take on the Gym Challenge; on the journey, the Player meets Marnie, a girl from a decaying town who is hoping to become the next Champion, and Bede, a boy who has been endorsed by Chairman Rose. During the course of the story Bede loses his endorsement after destroying a landmark, and ends up being taken in by Opal. By the time the player reaches the Semi Finals there are very few people left. After beating Marnie and Hop the player then faces the Gym Leaders before facing Leon. Before the battle Chairman Rose announces that he has started “The Darkest Day” in order to avert an energy crisis in a thousand years. After going to the Energy Plant the Player and Hop arrive just in time to see Leon attempting to catch Eternatus, only for the Champion to fail. With Leon out, it’s up to the Player and Hop to stop Eternatus; aided by the Wolves, the Player and Hop successfully managed to stop Eternatus. A few days later, the Player manages to defeat Leon. Sometime later, the new Champion has to deal with a crisis in the region. After resolving the crisis Hop announces that he is going to study under Professor Sonia. The player then travels to the Isle of Armor and then Crown Tundra. Months later and the Galarian Star Tournament is set up.
My theory: Red/Green/Ruby/Sapphire-3 years-Gold/Silver/Diamond/Pearl-13 years-Black/White-2 years-Black2/White2/X/Y-3 years-Sun/Moon-5 years-Sword/Shield.
We do know that Generations 1 and 3 games takes place at the same time
Generations 2 and 4 takes place three years after (Due to the mention of the Red Gyrados in Johto and the hope that the cameraman can get a glimpse of it)
Black and White takes place around 13 years after the events of Generations 2 and 4 (Caitlin is now older, Darach my have either retired or died as in the Unova games, Caitlin refers to him in past tense, Cynthia mentions Lucas/Dawn)
Black and White 2 takes place two years after that (Cheren is now a Gym Leader, Bianca is now an assistant to Professor Juniper, Hilbert/Hilda has been gone for two years; Brycen, Leonra and the Stiration Triplets have stood down as Gym Leaders, Alder is retired and Iris is now the Champion)
X and Y takes place at the same time as Black2/White2 (One person in Courmaine City mentions Team Plasma, someone on Route 10 mentions Colress; the only older character to appear is Looker, however the latter is justified due to the other characters that could have appeared taking part in the Pokemon World Tournament)
Sun and Moon take place two years after that (Sina and Dexio mentions the “Five Heroes who saved Kalos”, Grimsley have a different design while Red and Blue appear a lot older; Cynthia and Wally are also older)
Sword and Shield takes place some five years after that (The Aether Foundation is mentioned while Rotom can inhabit PC’s; another theory is the time it takes between Marcos Cosmos’ raid on the Aether Foundation and the creation of a fourth Type:Null. As seen in the files on the Beast Killer Project in Sun and Moon, it took a long time between the budget for the project and the time it took to create the three Type:Null in Alola. We do know Type:Null was created before Pokemon X and Y as Gladion stealing his Type:Null at the same time the events of Black2/White2/X/Y takes place. In real life, it can take between 5-10 years for advanced projects to reach fruitition. Plus the fact none of the older characters are seen or even mentioned bar Kurt makes me believe that some of the characters from Gens 1 to 7 may have either passed away or retired from Pokemon battling.)

How Pokemon could double the length of the games’ story without changing their writing style!
This will be quite a long post, so a lot of it will be under the cut!
Even though many Pokemon postgames can be really fun and fulfilling, it’s really only thanks to the battle facilities that some of them are blessed with. The postgame areas/story themselves usually feel very rushed and/or hollow. Meanwhile, Mystery Dungeon games have 20+ hour main stories that are followed up with even longer postgames adding up to over 50 hours of story! So how do the Mystery Dungeon games do it (Besides having a far superior programming and writing team)?
This is because among the three pillars of content in mainline Pokemon games, (Gym Leaders- aka distinct minibosses, new areas to explore with new Pokemon, and a b-plot) one or two of them always disappear in the postgame.
For example:
Johto: Has new gym leaders, but barely any b-plot to provide pacing, and the many new areas have barely any usable new Pokemon.
Sinnoh: Has a few new areas and a small b-plot, but no minibosses, explaining why the b-plot feels so small.
BW Unova: Has many new areas and new pokemon, but no minibosses and the Sage-finding b-plot barely counts
B2W2 Unova: The new areas are less new, the new Pokemon are less new, and none of the minibosses are mandatory. Outside of finding N again, there’s really not any b-plot.
Kalos/ORAS Hoenn/Alola/Galar: Barely any new areas, barely any new Pokemon, mostly a lot of backtracking in a condensed plot. Having more of a concrete story is nice but the lack of challenging fights makes it feel even shorter and less significant.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This is only re-crafting the story based on using plot devices that Pokemon have already used to improve and lengthen the playthrough. If we were allowed to use plot points or creative ideas that Gamefreak hasn’t used before, then we might as well turn the story into a 200 hour Mystery Dungeon-style epic saga, haha.
So-! Let’s take a look at this reworked story, where the main and postgame both have all three pillars of storytelling!
 Main Game:
The main game will be based off Gen 5 (Stopping an evil team) and Gen 7 (Setting up a league)
Set in a region where the evil team has already won (not really post-apocalyptic and edgy, just roughed-up like anime Kanto) and is a gang that constantly terrorises the residents. Gyms have been dismantled by this evil team, and the now-jobless gym leaders are trying to protect their towns from the villains.
You get your starter from the professor to save them from a grunt.
Instead of gym leaders, you fight the evil team admins in their hideouts across the region. There’s still puzzles and the admins are type specialists, so these simulate gyms to teach type matchups.
I guess to prove that it’s still to teach type matchups, some townsfolk will say stuff like “Admin X scorched my poor Grass and Bug-types with his Fire-type Pokemon!” and “If only I still had my Water-type Pokemon with me- then I’d teach them a lesson!”
Reasons to stop individual admins can be very different to make fighting them not feel stale- Rescuing Pokemon, the Professor, unblocking routes, re-securing an important facility, protecting cargo/a VIP, obtaining an artifact, etc. One of the reasons the grunts challenge you is because they want your Pokedex. For some reason, even though it’s been a plot point in the manga and the anime, saving your mom from the evil team has never happened in the games, which I think is a big missed opportunity for creating an intense high-stakes conflict!
You learn history in this region from former gym leaders/elite four/champion maybe? Sometimes gym leaders may make you take on their old gyms to see if you’re good enough to help them stop the evil team.
Rivals:
You have two rivals. One is a happy and friendly rival who becomes morally swayed as the evil team affects them personally (They become evil for like one fight because Pokemon would never allow more than that) until you help redeem them. And the other starts out edgy and driven to stop the evil team, like a Silver or Gladion, but learns compassion and overcomes most of their trauma by the end of the main game.
Villainous Team Boss:
There’s a scripted unwinnable battle with the evil team boss (like with Zacian and Zamazenta) early on in the game. This’ll help you feel like the boss is real threat and a scummy person you want to beat later!
And since the best evil team bosses are shitty parents, let’s make them the parent of the edgy rival!
This villain would probably be using the box legendary you have to save in the final battle against them?
We’ve somehow never had a villain who HATES Pokemon as their motive, just ones who see them as tools, so maybe this villain or their family member was injured by Pokemon before and now they hate Pokemon and want them subjugated? And as the first trainer in a while who openly loves their Pokemon, you specifically pose a threat to this villain?
This idea mostly came from realising that you’re pretty much always a reactionary protagonist and not a proactive one. You’re not really out to change the status quo on most Pokemon games, but in this one, the status quo starts out as villainous and it’s up to you to change it! This also comes from the critique from SwSh and Borderlands 3 where your character has no personal reason to do anything and just gets dragged around by some arrogant adult giving you orders.
Postgame:
The postgame will then be what the main games are usually like (Beating the league, completing the dex, dealing with legendaries)
It’s been several weeks since you beat the villain, and many towns have been repaired. A proper league has been set up, and you, as the hero of the region, are invited to test it.
A handful of new Pokemon are now in old routes, and several new routes are unlocked too.
Most gyms are in towns you’ve been to before, but some are in all-new towns that were blocked off by the evil team before!
Some gym leaders are former gym leaders who have reclaimed their titles, some of them are all-new characters, and at least one of them is a redeemed evil team admin. All of them have teams of six, plus gimmicks like Raihan or many NPCs in prior games like triple battles, held items, special moves, etc, in addition to the type matchup stuff.
You get a third new rival who’s a champion from another region, wanting to try this league out. They’re friendly but really cocky like Leon- maybe they’re actually Leon, who knows?
Instead of just using the shiny charm to incentivize Dex completion, there are many NPCs who give sidequests wanting to see specific rare Pokemon, offering hints to their location, items, TMs, etc in exchange. Some of them are even mandatory mini-arcs to help space out the gyms. Think the Solaceon news people or the Unova Hip Waders. All the NPCs have names to distinguish them more.
Like in SwSh, the Elite Four is a rivals tournament with 1) Recurring Fan like SwSh’s Orbeetle Girl, 2) Edgy Rival, 3) Cocky rival, 4) Former Champion. And like in USUM, the champion challenger is your very first rival, as cliché as it may be.
Bonus Postgame:
The third bonus postgame thing mostly features what modern Pokemon postgames and DLCs are like (Short story arcs with new characters and Legendary Pokemon showcases)
You travel to a new island area where the remnants of the evil team have freed their boss and they’re trying to use Space Dragon Legendary #4 to eradicate everyone, and you and edgy rival have to stop them, with many other characters all playing a part. Maybe even Looker too!
Overall Rival Character Development:
Nice rival: Starts out nice, becomes conflicted, turns kinda evil for one fight, becomes good again and regrets it, gets closure at the Champion fight, becomes a gym leader or something.
Edgy rival: Starts out edgy, wants the sole responsibility to stopping the villains, but gets pummelled by the villains, gives up for a while, gets motivated by you, helps you stop themain villain, tries to understand how to be a normal trainer kid, tries out the league challenge, gets closure from fully helping stop the main villain in the bonus postgame.
Cocky rival: Starts out seeing you as a stepping stone, sees you as a challenge after a few defeats, sees you as a bully after a few more defeats, and becomes depressed after losing the league, finally recognizes you as a better person than them after you save the world again in the bonus postgame, and gets downgraded to both a rematch character and helpful postgame NPC in the end.
In a perfect world, there would be PMD Sky-style bonus stories to develop the rivals and other characters, but I’m trying to make a slightly plausible story so I’m not including it in the main pitch here.

Big long rant about what makes a good rival in Pokémon, subtext, plots that show rather than tell, character-focused narratives, and how much I FUCKING HATE ROSE
So seeing as I unceremoniously decided to design a Pokémon game as aneans of venting my anger at how tumblr discourse stole all the confidence I ever had, I’ve been researching what it is people like in a Pokémon game.
And I’ve realized something.
When it comes to rivals, SwSh accomplished what X and Y tried and failed to do.
Everyone says X and Y have terrible rivals, the worst in the series, and they’re pretty much right. But I could never bring myself to dislike the set up. It had good ideas
Good ideas that SwSh accomplished thoroughly.
The set up is something we only see in those two games: a large group of rivals, each with a different goal and personality. Some are nicer, some are more competitive, some don’t seem to care about the main point of the game much at all.
That SwSh did well was make each one of them still involved in being a trainer. Where X and Y failed was in making the rivals goals too varied, only one of them even cared about getting badges!
But in SwSh, everyone cared about getting badges and becoming stronger for different reasons
You want to dethrone Leon, beating a trainer who has never been beaten.
Hop is standing in his brother’s shadow and wants to beat him to gain the approval of those around him, (especially his family who don’t even have any pictures of Hop on the wall or anything)
Marnie wants to help her hometown and her family who are suffering from neglect by the government.
Bede wants the approval of Rose, his adoptive father who doesn’t give a shit about him .
All of these characters have different personalities, interests, motivations, and end goals, but they all are competing for the same title as a means to accomplish those separate goals.
The goal is not to be the champion, becoming the champion is a means to accomplish your goals.
Also, notably two characters have VERY similar goals, those being Hop and Bede, both seeking validation and approval, but their personalities are so different that you almost don’t notice how much their characters parallel.
That’s something about SwSh I really liked actually, the reliance on subtext. In a shocking irony, the first Pokémon game with any form of free camera, relies on a very narrow narrative view. You miss most of the “plot” But that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.
No one tells you that Hop is the least favored child, that he’s constantly being compared to Leon and crushing under the weight of it. But Hop’s entire personality is built on being a people pleaser, of idolizing his brother, of being better because he’s Leon’s brother so he has to be. He’s clingy, so fucking clingy. Almost like he’s scared you’re going to leave him. His facade is shattered by one insult from Bede. His arc is told through his battles, constantly switching out his team, even replacing his first ever Pokémon, his Wooloo, for a few battles.
Rose forgets his adopted sons name who the fuck does that????? Bede has a Rolex but no father figure. Oleana sure as fuck doesn’t care about the kid, she doesn’t care about anything but her man (who walks around in public dressed like he got dressed in a dark dumpster btw)
And more on Rose, can we talk about how much the tower and Leon’s place in it means??? Like the whole game Leon is never seen wearing ANYTHING but his uniform, which is ugly as sin. That was on purpose. That isn’t really Leon’s outfit. That’s the outfit he’s forced to wear by the league. Once he’s no longer champion and out from under Rose’s thumb? He gets to dress however he wants, and his new outfit rally FEELS like Leon, it’s extravagant, it’s kinda funny, he keeps the hat but wears a suit, and it’s unabashedly HIS. He got a huge glow up in post game because he finally had the chance to be himself! Same with Bede!
Rose is toxic. There, I said it. Your MCM is fucking toxic and fucks up all his interpersonal relationships whether he knows it or not, he canonically cannot prioritize for shit, he was more worried about something thousands of years in the future than the thing happening the next day, and Oleana was a fucking enabler full stop.
The Galar region runs on Dynamax to the point where their biggest power plant is also a stadium. Very little is known about Dynamaxing other than one time it happened everywhere and was apocalyptic. Yet the entire region depends on it.
Who speaks out about how batshit this is? Piers. Whose town is in shambles, completely neglected by Rose, the de facto political leader of the region? Piers. Rose was willing to abandon a whole city because their gym leader didn’t fucking like Dynamaxing.
Leon not having any sense of direction is A FUCKING METAPHOR FOR HOW HE HASNT EVER HAD CONTROL OVER HIS LIFE BECAUSE HE WAS DEPENDANT ON ROSE’S SPONSORSHIP AND THUS HAS NO EXPERIENCE IN DIRECTING HIMSELF
The sponsorship mechanic is just as skeevy in Pokémon as it is irl! Just saying! You want to keep your spot? Better do everything the advertisers want cause they own your soul now!
The fact that you don’t know what exactly happened when Leon and Sonia ran off to fix shit, that doesn’t matter. That’s not the point! The plot was never about fighting through hoarded of grunts while an evil team leader laughs maniacally in the distance! We’re not in gen 1 anymore! We have actual narratives now!
Because SwSh is not the story of how Rose tried to fix an energy crisis by summoning ancient gods and causing an apocalypse. We had a few of those already!
If you want ducky psuedoscience masquerading as environmentalism might I direct you to gen 3?
Oh if you want batshit depressed scientists with enough money to make it everyone else’s problem too, gen 4 and gen 6 did that.
Want a generic bad guy who just turns out to be a punching bag for the player with very little proper motivation? There’s been like 10 Kanto games I’m sure you’ll get your Giovanni fix somewhere.
SwSh is the story of how selfishness, misplaced priorities, and enabling others toxic behavior will fuck up everyone around you.
Leon has no direction because he’s been a puppet since the day he let Rose sponsor him
Bede has no confidence because the closest thing he had to a family neglected him
Hop has no goal outside of Leon because he’s never been allowed to be anything but Leon’s little brother
Marnie has to take on all the responsibility for Spikemuth because her brother has lost his influence after falling out of Rose’s favor
Tl:Dr
the only reason people say SwSh has no story is because they literally have no idea what the word subtext means, didn’t bother to pay attention to the relationships between the characters, and wanted a stereotypical Fight The Evil Team plot so they can make Rose into one of their Big Baddie Daddies™️ when in reality he’s just a petulant man child who should have never been put in charge of anything, had absolute power over the region, and traumatized a bunch of children FOR LITERALLY NO FUCKING REASON
Maybe if you didn’t cheat your way through highschool English it would make sense you half-baked reddit-crawling dorito gremlins

Now that HeartGold is done, some thoughts.
I absolutely love these games.  Gen 4 is just so much fun to play, and the adjustments made in HGSS really add a lot.  Like, there are more trainers, gym leader rebattles, an improved league.  Red’s not just 20-30 levels above the rest of the world inexplicably.
That said...boy is Kanto just as much of a slog.  There’s really not a ton to do, and the leader rebattling system is hidden behind really tedious gathering of phone numbers and calling at the right time to schedule a rematch.  Platinum had the much better system.  Sure, it was kinda random who you’d get, but at least you didn’t have to do anything other than show up.
I feel like everyone clamoring each generation for something where you go back to revisit another region after beating the first is blinded by nostalgia.  It seemed like a great idea, but largely you’re just there to sweep everything, and the levels don’t keep scaling.  Every random encounter is so far beneath you as to be a joke.  It’s why getting Pokemon like Larvitar, Houndour, and Misdreavus is so ridiculous in GSC, they’re so close to the end of the game that they literally don’t matter anymore.  The path to the Safari Zone at least helps, but I sure can’t figure out how the Safari Zone itself is supposed to work.  I’m as lost as anyone.  It’s just...not a great design choice, I feel like.  It’s a victory lap that gives you something to do, but not much else.
I think I prefer Platinum’s structure.  Where you beat the League, and there’s a smaller side area that’s designed to continue scaling.  Like, there were all sorts of additional areas and paths in Platinum, and it keeps the game fresh after you’re done with the main goal.  HGSS always feels like it kinda fizzles out after a bit.  I don’t necessarily mind Kanto, but a lot of the battles in the region are lower level by a pretty wide margin, and you even start to get ahead of the Gym Leaders.  Blue is the only one that can really take you by surprise, because he’s set up as being so far above the others, but frankly I don’t really like that either.  It never bothered me before too much, but now amidst the sea of Gen 1 pandering, it feels like the start of it all.  Thank god Gens 3-5 didn’t really keep up that trend of making everyone from Kanto the biggest, strongest dick OGs.  I don’t feel like he should realistically be stronger than any of the other leaders.  Although it is a little goofy that as a former champion, he’s weaker than Lance too?  So continuity’s a bit wonky.  Regardless, it doesn’t pose any true problems, just a personal irritation.
As a last note of frustration...it’s bullshit you need Rock Climb to get to Red.  I get it conceptually, but adding in a dead move on something and locking your team into one of surprisingly few options that can use the move, or forcing one of your main six on the bench and fighting at a disadvantage, really sucks.
But on the flip side to that...the game just looks gorgeous.  Like, it’s one of those things, right?  Where going back and looking at the sprite work and the simpler animations, it still holds up.  I did the Ho-oh summoning event at night, and just...the entire look of that area is stunning.  I just really appreciate how good they made it look, without needing like...super high-end graphics to make it work.
I also really enjoy the gym leaders.  Some regions just don’t have the best gym leaders to offer.  Like, I don’t remember anything from XY, SuMo, and have very little interest in SwSh leaders either, aside from Opal.  Like, they don’t stand out.  Even Gen 3 and Gen 4 don’t have the best roster, with some of them being kinda forgettable.  I feel like Gen 2 always stood out to me.  I think it has a lot to do with being the first time gym leaders like...did stuff.  Gen 1 leaders were just around, but Gen 2?  You had Jasmine helping tend to a sick Pokemon, you had Morty’s entire ambition regarding meeting the legendary Ho-oh, you had Clair being a sore loser and knowing more about her temperament through her failure of the master’s trial.  Gym leaders in this generation did stuff.  HGSS brings that another huge step forward, since you can find them around the world doing their own thing.  It’s not hugely exciting, but I always liked that a lot.
It was also a blast to run a team of Pokemon I’ve never really run before.  Ariados, Lanturn, Stantler, Umbreon, Hypno, and Giratina.  Giratina...honestly kinda worried me at first?  I haven’t run an Uber on the main team since...I want to say Gen 3.  Actually no, I kept Zekrom in Gen 5 because I felt like thematically it was appropriate.  But outside of that one instance, I never use Ubers in my main game team.  So I was like.  Maybe this will be too much.  But honestly?  It was fine.  Super strong and good, obviously, but not so overpowering that I felt untouchable at any point in the game.  Umbreon was also an absolute beast.  I tend to shy away from defensive Pokemon for main game as well, but wow what an event.  Hypno was really good too?  Like, not outlandishly good, but strong enough.  Stantler was a little underwhelming, often lacking the damage off Stomp to really threaten, and the game seemed to sense my bullshit ways and prevented paraflinch from really doing its job ever.  Ariados...was super fun to make work, but as you probably noticed in the late game, barely ever came into play.  She just fell off in power.
Lanturn, though?  Hot damn is it good main game.  I was stunned.  Surf, Discharge, Ice Beam, and Signal Beam really does handle like 90% of the game just fine.  Its huge bulk and surprisingly strong offense thanks to super effective coverage really made Lanturn stand out.  That was incredibly enjoyable.
So yeah, this was a lot of fun for me.  I’m still not sure which game will come next, kinda leaning toward Emerald or Black 1, since I recently played LeafGreen.  But we’ll see if I want to get closer to modern day with a replay of Y, if I can stomach it.  Time will tell.

@jackjack-p Oh wow, that’s a lot! I can do that though!
1. What is your favorite pokemon?
Espeon! It was thanks to pokemon Colosseum and XD that I got attached to it, and now I love it a whole lot.
2. Favorite type
I always struggle with this question. I like psychic types a lot but I don’t know if I can call them my favorites. I also really like ice and ground types.
3. Favorite region?
Hoenn! Sapphire was my first pokemon game so I’m biased but I love hoenn’s variety in towns and cities, love the tropical setting, and I still wish we’d get a game with more focus on water routes again (was really hoping Alola would fulfill that wish, was a little disappointed when it didn’t)
4. Favorite gym leader?
By region: Either Erika or Janine Pryce Either Winona or Wallace Gardenia God I love all of the unova gym leaders I don’t even know Wulfric And as a bonus favorite trial captain has got to be either Ilima or Mina
5. Favorite villain team?
Plasmaaaa~
6. Offensive or status moves?
Offensive, usually (I’m experimenting more with status moves recently though)
8. Cute Pokemon or strong Pokemon?
Both! I’ll use anything that I like pretty much.
10. Monotype or multitype teams?
I go out of my way to avoid type overlap as much as I can most of the time, but I can appreciate a good monotype run (and I have one that’s technically been ongoing for years that I’ve never gotten back to finishing with normal types in Omega Ruby)
11. Legendaries or non-legendaries?
For the most part non legendaries, but occasionally I’ll incorporate a legendary on my team just to mix it up, and I have a few favorite legendaries.
12. Mew or Mewtwo?
Mew!
13. Mach bike or Acro bike?
Mach bike, acro bike is more of a utility thing. I appreciate them giving you both in the remakes though
14. Shiny pokemon or regular pokemon?
Depends on the Pokemon. Some shiny forms look amazing, and some… don’t.
15. Jessie or James?
James!
16. Best contest category? (Cute, smart, beautiful, tough, cool)
They’re all good, but I have fond memories of winning the cuteness contest master rank in emerald with my quagsire and getting it painted in the museum.
17. Best starter set? (Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, etc.)
Probably either Johto or Hoenn. There’s not one region where I don’t like one starter less than the other two, but my least favorites in those two regions are by the least compared to the others.
18. Best Elite Four?
Aesthetically Kalos wins easily, I love all of their designs, but I think the Sun and Moon Elite 4 are the best as characters. Unova deserves honorable mention as another favorite,
19. Best Professor?
Either Birch or Sycamore. I like Birch as a professor who goes out and does field work, and I love Sycamore just for how obviously smitten with Lysandre he is.
20. Best storyline?
Black and White, no contest. Gen 5 is the ultimate pokemon story. Sun and Moon made a strong attempt and are another favorite, but missed some of the magic gen 5 had, and then USUM butchered a lot of what good they did have going.
21. Best Rival?
Silver, an antagonistic rival with a well written story and a logical background explaining why he’s the way he is, and character growth over the course of the game.
22. Do you nickname your Pokemon?
All the ones that I’m using, definitely! Oddly, the one exception is PMD, I guess since they just call each other by species name anyways it feels weird for me to name any pokemon except the player character there.
24. How long have you been playing Pokemon?
Pretty sure pokemon were some of, if not the first, videogames that I ever played, so uh, a long time.
25. Do you collect cards or other Pokemon merch besides the games?
Not really tbh, not to say that I wouldn’t ever be interested in merch of my favorite pokemon, but I’ve never really seeked it out.
26. Do you tend to win battles?
In single player yeah, 50/50 in casual multiplayer, I’ve never tried playing competitively.
27. Do you watch the anime?
I used to as a kid. I tried to check out the darkrai movie at one point a little while back because the one before was the last one I saw before I pretty much stopped watching the anime and movies, but I didn’t end up watching the whole thing and I haven’t watched any since then.
28. Switch or DS?
Switch, the mainline games aren’t out yet for me to compare, but I like the switch a lot as a system and I’m just a little too old to have much DS nostalgia. GBA nostalgia on the other hand...
29. Are you an avid Daycare user?
Yep! I’ve seen some posts on here ragging on people who spend all their time breeding for IVs or whatever as not enjoying the game the right way before, and it kind of hurt a little because that’s one of my favorite post game activities. It’s relaxing zoning out and hatching eggs going for whatever your goal is, and super satisfying when you finally get what you’re looking for. And then you can wondertrade the rest and give other people pokemon they may appreciate and get cool new stuff yourself!
30. What are your expectations for the next main series game?
I don’t even know, a return to a more normal gym system I guess, but maybe tweaked compared to the old gyms->elite four formula, some new possibly gimmicky game mechanic in the vein of mega evolution and Z moves, 50/50 chance HMs return because gamefreak loves turning back the clock on innovation, hopefully a larger region to account for the Switch’s extra power. A region that’s absolutely dripping character and personality, as the last few consistently have, maybe some connection to Kalos? You can’t have Britain and France regions and just not do anything with that after all.

Note
since apparently u didn’t get it before: do all the muse meme for Silver
1- What’s their full name?
Silver Batalino
2- What’s the reason/meaning behind their name?
He was named after his grandfather on Giovanni’s side, Argentino. (Argentino means Silver.)
3- Do they have a nickname? What’s the meaning behind it?
No nickname. He doesn’t like nicknames. Sometimes (rarely) people call him ‘Silv’, which is just a shortened version of his name. Surprisingly, he’s less adverse to this type of nickname than others. Still doesn’t like it all that much though.
4- Do they have a false name? Why? Does it have any meaning?
Despite living as a thief for a while and who his parents are, he doesn’t have a false name. In the past, he highly disliked sharing his name at all, and he never mentioned his last name if he could help it. Now that he has a more stable life and he’s done all he can to rectify his past deeds though, he’s more open to saying who he is. A good thing too, considering all the socializing he’s done recently.
5- How old are they? How old do they appear?
As of our last RP, Silver was sixteen. Since then, the birthday we set for him has come around again, though at this point we may just say screw it & not count the past year towards the time passed in the Glitch Gen universe. (We did a lot of things since his last birthday, most recently the Alola thread everything that stemmed from it. Holidays that followed were Christmas, Valentine’s Day, & Father’s Day, but we can shove our newest ideas in around everything that happened there instead of it being a half year to a year later.) So... sixteen going on seventeen pretty much. Because of his height though, he often looks a couple years younger than he is. This annoys him to NO end.
6- What is their eye color? Do they have to use glasses or contacts? How good/bad is their vision?
Silver’s eyes are a very light, steely blue. I’ve talked with Turbomun about him possibly needing glasses before, but Idk exactly how bad it’d be, or even whether he’d be nearsighted (like me) or farsighted... ehehehe.........
7- What is their weight/height? What kind of body type/build do they have?
Silver is 5′ even. Couldn’t tell you his weight, but it’s lighter than you’d expect. He a scrawny, wiry boi.
8- What is their skin tone/type? If they have fur, how long is it? Does it have any markings or patterns?
Silver has EXTREMELY light skin with freckles. The freckles are light enough that they’re not too noticeable if he hasn’t gotten much sun in a while, but the downside of getting sun is that he sunburns easily.
9- Do they have any distinguishing marks?
Not sure how to answer this...? Haven’t really thought about birthmarks, though if he had any, they’re easily covered up by his clothes. He also has a few scars, though the more prominent ones are again easily covered by clothes.
10- What are their prominent features?
The red hair is hard to miss. Also the bad attitude and general dislike of socializing with strangers.
11- How attractive are they to others?
If the internet is anything to go by... he is VERY attractive to others. His attitude tends to put off most people though.
12- Are they healthy? If no, why not?
He’s... a lot healthier than he was after just a short time on his own. But fending for himself for so long no doubt stunted his growth on top of him getting a raw deal in the genetic lottery in regards to his height. He also got sick a lot on his own, but this has lead to a stronger immune system over time & a good understanding of how to treat himself with whatever he can find in the immediate area.
13- What’s their favorite color? Why?
Silver is pretty indifferent towards colors, but he tends to like those that are darker & cooler like black or navy blue. The one warm color he likes more is red, & that’s mainly because it looks good on him as an accent color with his red hair.
14- What’s their least favorite color? Why?
No least favorite color.
15- What’s their favorite music? Why?
Anime themes, classical music, and rock music. The anime is because he is a closet nerd & the classical & rock is just because that’s what he likes. No real reason to it.
16- What kind of food do they like or have to eat?
Silver isn’t particularly picky, but he does enjoy sweets more than other types of food. He is also more accustomed to Japanese and Italian cuisine.
17- What kind of books do they like to read?
Long, immersive fantasy stories never fail to pull him in. Especially in the vein of Lord of the Rings. He doesn’t appreciate romantic subplots much, though.
18- How do they get around?
He flies with either Crobat or Lugia. If he’s in a pinch though, he can depend on Entei or Meganium to take him places. (Meganium wouldn’t be very fast of course, but it’s still an option for if he injured himself or something.)
19- Are they a daredevil or more cautious?
Silver is usually a cautious person. The only exception is when Team Rocket is involved in some way. He hates them with a burning passion and tends to lose most common sense & logical thinking when faced with them.
20- How do they handle being alone?
He actually enjoys being alone to a degree, but after a while he will seek out company. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again - he’s much like a cat in this regard.
21- Name any good habits they have
I... honestly can’t think of any...? I’ll have to think on that.
22- Name any bad habits they have
Habitual self-isolation... S’not good, man. Also a tendency to set his own preferences aside around friends and family, which makes asking for his opinion the WORST THING.
23- What are their favorite hobbies or pastimes?
He likes to read. Also when he’s older, I’d imagine he repairs books on a regular basis as like... pet projects of his.
24- How would they like to spend a rainy day? A sunny day?
In bed with a good book on both accounts. Or maybe indulging in a bit of anime.
25- Where do they come from? What is their culture? Any traditions or things of that sort in their hometown?
Silver was born in Viridian, but spent most of his childhood in Fuchsia City & then traveled constantly around Kanto and Johto. As a result of all that, he really doesn’t have any ties to one particular town.
26- List out their immediate family. How good is their relationship with them?
Giovanni (father) - decently good and getting better with each passing dayAriana (mother) - horrible and will likely never recover
27- Are they diurnal or nocturnal? Early bird or night owl?
Left to his own devices, Silver is more nocturnal. He is a complete night owl. The sun is a deadly laser.
28- What are they afraid of? What are they not afraid of?
He is afraid of losing those he cares about, Team Rocket returning, going back to his abusive ways, and thunderstorms. He is NOT afraid of most anything else. Wary and untrusting with some things, certainly, but not really afraid.
29- What are their goals? How are they going to achieve those goals?
He has already achieved pretty much every goal he’s set for himself. Now he’s trying to figure out a direction to point his life in.
30- Are there any obstacles that might get in the way of their goals?
Only his natural introversion and dislike of strangers.
31- How well known are they among the common folk? Is it for a good reason?
He isn’t really THAT well known, but he beat the Johto E4 and Champion Lance, not to mention he’s dating Champion Ethan/Gold, so... he’s moderately well known.
32- Do they hold any secrets? What are they?
His biggest secret is who he’s related to, and as an extension, his relation to Team Rocket. He’d rather die than allow the general public to know about that. Especially since that would put his father in danger.
33- When confronted with danger, how would they react?
He either calls on his Pokemon to support him or promptly Nopes the other way.
34- What is their species? Describe their species and their features
Lol he human.
35- What is their basic story?
Mafia prince runs away when dad leaves to soul search. Steals things and learns to live off the land. Abuses his partners until 3 years later a happy-go-lucky kid beats his ass at every turn & he eventually realizes his lack of compassion is his downfall. 3 more years later he reconciles w/ his dad, starts dating the happy-go-lucky kid & his childhood friend, and achieves all the goals he ever set for himself, even being chosen by two legendary Pokemon to be their trainer. Now he lives in relative peace under the radar, hoping no one pops in to arrest his dad & occasionally wondering if he’ll be given a position as a Gym Leader at one point or another.

Pokémon Champions and overall Journey Themes
Pokémon. A franchise met with much praise and adoration for many years.
Catching your favorite pocket monsters, while capturing the hearts of many.
Today we're going to look and analyze at an aspect of the main games that many is familiar with: Champions.
The last victory before the main journey is over. A culmination of everything the player has been through over the entire main game. And here we're talking about what the Pokémon Champions really symbolize in the games and how they hold up the overall themes of the game.
Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow
Starting with Blue in Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow.
As the first games of the franchise, it's only natural that the champion is someone the player knows.
With Blue, Gen 1 is the first Pokémon games. So, of course since Pokémon is a personal journey it ends with you the player facing someone of a personal relationship.
You went on this journey. You saved Kanto from Team Rocket. You caught many Pokémon of various shapes, sizes, colors and personalities. You filled up the Pokédex. You traveled across the lands.
Now it's time for one final challenge before your journey is over.
And there's the man who reminds of where you began. Your own best friend as the champion. If both journeys are coming to end, so is this friendly rivalry the two of you have had since the start.
The main theme of Gen 1 is to remind fans how Pokémon is ultimately a journey you set off on yourself.
Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal
Now let's move on to the Johto region in Gen 2. Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal share close connections to the Gen 1 games, being seen as a bit of an add on.
Lance is a Dragon master, Gen 2 was about respecting old legends and learning from those before you, so of course the champion has a team of dragons and ancient Pokémon.
Team Rocket returns and does not respect any of the old legends, as seen with messing with the natural habitat, angering a shiny Gyrados and caring more about themselves.
Silver, the son of Giovanni is also reflective of this as he tries to take on his dad's old crime group before forging his own path.
Lance embodies none of these characteristics and teaches the player to respect all before you, but never lose sight of what awaits you.
We ultimately forge our own paths.
Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald
In the Gen 3 games Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Team Magma and Team Aqua both have plans for changing the overall environment of the entire Hoenn region.
Both Steven Stone and Wallace have Pokémon closer to the the natural world, showing the player to never forget Pokémon origins, and not grow obsessed with how phenomenal the world as a whole is.
Pokémon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum
With Cynthia in the Gen 4 games of Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, she's the first champion to have a team not regulated by one type. You, the player, are a literal small town Pokémon trainer that goes on to do great things in contrast yet likeness.
Cynthia is humble in who she is and was most likely in the same position as the Player. Showing how anyone can do great things and go on to do great things. No matter where they came from.
Pokémon Black and White
With the Gen 5 game Pokémon Black and White: Alder is very old and N, someone much younger, beating him is meant to reflect Team Plasma's goals and ushering in a new age. Alder being beat is meant to show the old ways are done. N winning is the Truth, his future of no more Pokémon battling is what he deems ideal. As the overall theme of Black and White is Truth and Ideals.
The player beating him and Team Plasma, is meant to show how hollow Truth and Ideals are, when on a journey of power than self discovery.
Pokémon Black 2 and White 2
This carries over to Pokémon Black 2 and White 2: Team Plasma has split into two groups. One believes in the old goal of people and Pokémon coexisting peacefully, while the other wants to take over Unova. The latter, Neo Team Plasma is trying to hold onto N's ideals, while the former is the truth behind what Team Plasma always planned on.
Iris going from a Gym Leader in one version of the previous games to champion holds onto this theme, while rejecting it; this is the last 2D Pokémon game, so what is being carried over?
Fun. No matter what paths we take, what roads we travel, what struggles we face, Pokémon is all about having fun.
N lost sight of why Pokémon would want to stay with their masters, but realized in the end, through the protagonist that maybe humans and Pokémon may live in harmony one day.
Fun adds meaning to life and helps take our minds off of what we face in our day to day lives. It's the Truth of why so many love Pokémon, creating an ideal world building enrichment in our lives.
Pokémon X and Y
Moving on, in the Gen 6 games X and Y, Diantha is a fashion model and embodies beauty in yourself and finding it in others. Team Flare wants beauty to be immortalized. Diantha disagrees with Lysandre and rejects his offer early in the game, understanding nothing lasts forever and beauty becomes hollow if it does.
The player beating her and than beating AZ is meant to show how something is beautiful not because it lasts: how we feel towards it does. As seen with with AZ and Floette. Even decades later, they still hold the same love they hold for each other.
Team Flare is shown throughout the game to be a group of flamboyant criminals, that while emphasizing immortal beauty: all look the same.
As everything must fade away at some point and nothing truly lasts forever. But that's not exactly bad thing. It's a reminder of appreciating things in the here and now.
Pokémon (Ultra) Sun and (Ultra) Moon
With Gen 7, since something is done differently here, but the player still beats the Elite Four and shows how anyone can stand tall, but true knowledge never ends. As seen with being able to defend your position as champion.
When one reaches the top, what's left when you've learned all there is to learn and being number one?
Start all over again. The other side of the mountain is the beginning and every journey starts all over again.
This idea is also instilled in the challengers, as for the first time the player can defend their title as champion and teach the same lesson to them.
Pokémon Sword and Shield
In the Gen 8 games, Leon basically embodies the pressure society puts on you when you become famous and needing to live up the expectations of your family (or otherwise supporting them). He's one of the first who makes an explicit effort to keep "you kids" out of danger until it becomes impossible. He even takes an entire HIT for the player during the Eternatus incident. He breaks the trope of ten year olds being expected to handle everything, while adults help in smaller ways.
And why does he care so much? Pressure.
How fitting and ironic since this is the first console Pokémon games, with Gen 7 being the last handheld ones.
Moving on, Leon understands the pressures of the player going on a journey, as he was in the very same position himself.
Societal pressures are ultimately pointless: you decide what defines greatness and how others can follow your example. As seen with Leon looking out for the player. Not to be blinded by the light, but to follow it.
Thanks for reading everyone! I look forward to what Gen 9 may do this.

1, 15, 17, 18, 27, and then whichever 'favorite' and 'least favorite' correspond to your answer to question 1.
Favorite Type - I have so many aaa... It was water for a really long time due to its adaptability and overall power, but now I think I like Poison types more, thanks to Fairy’s introduction, hahaFavorite Shiny - I really like Minior because it looks so stylish for a space rock! After having all colors of the rainbow, the shiny version is just an absence of light. I thought it was really neat!!3 Favorite Pokemon - In no particular order: Scrafty, Roserade and Eelektross!3 Least Favorite Pokemon - Again, in no order: Coballion (its legs, man why are its legs designed like that), Mr. Mime, and Blacephalon (these two designs just aren’t My Cup of Tea)Overall Favorite Generation - Aww you know this one already; it’s Gen 5! Being introduced to the generation with a completely new set of pokemon and ONLY those pokemon until you beat the game helps you immerse yourself in the region and really see the new mechanics, moves, types and designs for what they’re worth! Not to mention the music in this gen hasn’t been topped yet (Gen 3 remakes came close to, ngl) and the storyline, the LOADS of empasis on characters and really showing Gym Leaders as normal folk with second jobs and hobbies and interests was really cool. Lastly, having one of the best villains I’ve seen really culminates Unova having my personal fave pokemon games =DFavorite Poison Type - Since I already said Roserade above, I’ll say Muk! Both versions are pretty neat--I even have a shiny Kanto Muk that I’m currently harvesting bottle caps for, haha!Least Favorite Poison Type - Gulpin/Swalot. Their designs just don’t appeal to me =O

MORN
At 4:30 in the morning, I healed my team using the fight against Bugsy and headed West to Ilex Forest, to be confronted by my rival, Luster, with IndieCindy switched for Rainwater.
Rainwater's Mud Slap took out Gastly with no issue. Rock Star's Rock Throw does similar for Zubat.
And then... well, I already knew thanks to the fishermen on route 32 that I've been having issues with water types, and unfortunately, the answer to that problem is on the other side of this battle.
Luster's Croconaw one-shots Rainwater. As they say in the business... "oh fuck." I switch to DrinkyBird, trying to get SOMETHING going, but she gets critically low on health, and Rock Star is 4x weak. I get stuck just using potions over and over, but I'm either gonna run out or he's gonna crit and I'll be done for, so I make a snap judgement and switch to Rock Star. As expected, he does down, but it gives me that extra turn of healing, and it lets me reset his Leers.
At this point I notice that he's using Leer and Scratch instead of the STAB Water Gun he's got, because he knows that my Special Defense is my highest stat. I Growl him down and try to survive as best as I can until he changes gears and starts using Water Gun instead, healing when I can. I use a found X Attack, and keep attacking and healing, trying desperately to hold on, at one point being dropped all the way down to 1 hp but managing to survive... and after an awful slog of a battle, losing two dear friends, I beat him. This was very nearly a run-ender.
Ilex Forest is my next stop, for a Pokemon capture and Farfetch'd herding. Now, my initial plan here was to enter at night, where I would essentially either capture an Oddish or a Paras, both of which would cure my Water problem, and then also get Headbutt and be able to potentially catch an Exeggcute, which would do similar but would also be a Pokemon I haven't used before.
Of course, I entered in the morning, so I got a Weedle. Which, is fine, it just means I can DEFINITELY get an Exeggcute from Azalea Town. I name it "KnifeFight" and, with a lack of anything else I particularly want to teach Cut in the party, I start backtracking to collect berries and grinding it to level 10.
Speaking of grinding, the level curve in this game is already bothering me. Why is the highest level Pokemon encountered in Ilex Forest at Level 6? We are two gyms into the game, have fought Level 16 Pokemon with trainers behind them, and yet, the wild Pokemon aren't even level 10. They're 2-3 levels higher than the ones found on the first route of the game. This is dumb! Why is it this way???
Anyway grinding takes six eternities but whatever, eventually I have a Beedrill and I can teach it cut and actually progress through the game. I also get to knock out some of those cut trees from earlier in the game, which mostly just makes the walk easier.
Back in the forest, but not for long, I grab Headbutt and re-exit to Azalea Town, find a nice tree and start butting it.
After 6 Weedles, followed by a Beedrill, followed by 11 more Weedles and a Kakuna, FINALLY, some eggs fall out of the tree. I mean, an Exeggcute. NOW I can progress through the game! Its name is "Deliver", and...
Hm. I hadn't actually checked its movepool until now. It might not be as useful as anticipated. The TMs for Psychic and Giga Drain are both in Kanto, and while it'll get Confusion in just 9 levels, the first and only STAB Grass move it gets by level up will be... SolarBeam at Level 43.
My only other option is Mega Drain... which is an egg move. Well, fortunately, I am about to be at the Pokemon Daycare... so, I guess that's what I'm doing - catching a Sunkern at the National Park during the day, hoping that's my first encounter, and hoping it's male so I can breed it with my thankfully female Exeggcute. That's a lot of hopes. And, to muddy the issue, I then stopped playing for the day, and the next day was Thursday, which means the Bug Catching Contest is on, which if my understanding is correct, would have prevented me from catching a Sunkern.

MORN
I drop Deliver off at the daycare, and head for Goldenrod, where the Name Rater lives, allowing me to change the name of my Hoothoot from DrinkyBird to T.I.M.E.
Speaking of time, just do be extra safe, I decide to play around with it a bit. I set it exactly 36 hours forwards, putting me in the daytime of Friday, and safely outside of the reach of the Bug Catching Contest. I do this by holding Down, B and Select at the title screen and inputting a password that is generated from my character's name, ID Number and current money total. Thanks, PsyPokes.com!
I head to the National Park ASAP, and... yes!! The Sunkern I need is exactly what I get! I name it Sundial, shove it right into the daycare, and go attend to some business in Goldenrod. I grab the Bicycle, I fight some guys without meaning to... actually, can I say some stuff about the dialogue in this game? One guy said he gave his Pokemon a haircut, which would make sense cause the haircut place is right there by him... but then he sent out a LICKITUNG. Which, if it has hair... I super duper don't want to know where. Also, one trainer said "Behold my graceful BALL dexterity." Like, capitalized like that, because of this game's weird thing with capitalization. (Seriously, how did it take until Gen 5 for them to fix the antiquated adventure game CAPITALIZATION of KEYWORDS?) Which is just hilarous.
Anyway, while waiting for my eggs and seeds to breed, I run to some freshly available routes and catch some new boys for my team.
On Route 34, I find a Drowzee, who I name Nightmare. Again, this is a Pokemon I used recently, so... boxed.
On Route 35, I found a Male Nidoran! I name it Showdown, and since it has Double Kick, I'm definitely at least gonna use it for Whitney! Speaking of, that's a whole dangerous thing. She's well known as being a difficult fight. As I collect andrun around to grind and hatch the egg, I think about my strategy. I also backtrack for berries while trying to hatch it, and rematch Hiker Anthrony while I'm at it.
Eventually, the egg hatches into more eggs, which I name Fine, and I'm grinding it from Level 5 to something usable! And yes, it has Mega Drain! I use both my heals in the process of grinding, the one in Goldenrod and the one from the Luster fight at the beginning of this post. Also, wow, they are REALLY pushing the Game Boy Printer in this game, huh? Like, wow.
NITE
I slept, and kept playing when I woke up! I fought the gym trainers, and backtracked ALL THE WAY to New Bark to heal, and then went back to Goldenrod, and... sigh, bluh, FINE. I go ahead and fight Whitney.
The really dangerous thing here is that since she only has two Pokemon, well... so do I. Showdown and IndieCindy accompany me, while the full-health T.I.M.E. and Fine (and the essentially obsolete KnifeFight for that matter) are boxed, and I head for the leader herself.
As with most gym leaders, their non-ace Pokemon are basically meaningless. Clefairy goes down quick and easy. Miltank, though... hff. I lead against it with IndieCindy and get off two Smokescreens before his health got too low to keep going. I switched, healed, used Double Kick, and was disappointed by how much damage it did. Showdown (who had evolved in the process of grinding) was infatuated, so I switched back to the restored Cindy and got off some more smokescreens, and so it goes. Friggin' Milk Drink... such garbage.
Showdown got killed by a critical Stomp, which leaves me one Pokemon away from the end of the run, yet again. Ember burned Miltank, but I was infatuated back. It could be a simple war of attrition thanks to the burn, if not for Milk Drink making it last way longer.... but I did, EVENTUALLY, manage to do it!!
I lay Showdown to rest. He wasn't with me for long, but he served his purpose very well. I pull TIME and Fine from the PC, and head off towards Route 36, to fight that Sudowoodo!!!
Rock Throw takes down a solid half of Fine's health. That's less than ideal. I manage to put it to sleep and heal, and drain its health, catching it handily! I name it Wiggles. Since I'm close enough, I run back to Cherrygrove, and heal there, finally.
On Route 37, after 3 Hoothoots, I run into a Stantler! But... I ran out of balls trying to catch it.
While exploring Ecruteak, Luster appears, catching me off guard. Fortunately I match his team size (4 to 4) but I'm unprepared for the battle.
I mostly get through it alright. T.I.M.E. evolved into Noctowl. And Fine... well. Fine died. Which sucks, and means I wasted a lot of time, but also... I have an infinite supply of fresh Mega Drain Exeggcutes. I run back to the daycare after talking to Bill in the Center, retrieving another egg egg, and in Goldenrod I visited Bill's house, and he gave me an Eevee, which I named Furries! Which also means I can't get a Pokemon from the Goldenrod Game Corner. :P
You may notice that “Furries” doesn’t lead to a link to the song in question there. That’s because the official video from Neil’s own Youtube channel featuring that song has been wrongfully taken down based on a false copyright claim, despite it being Neil’s original mashup work. If you want to listen to it, it’s track 3 on the freely available album Mouth Silence.
I catch Pokemon in the Burned Tower (a Koffing, named Fuzzy) and on Route 38 (Meowth, named Cat Hacks) and box them both before going to work... and then I put off writing this for nearly a week! But I did that, so I'll be playing again soon.
