hi person who brought up the n*zis and julian in the same sentence on anon. i have to inform you i have a policy of deleting hateful anons, because i think you’re all worth for nothing shits.

granted you, in special, i shouldn’t have deleted, i should’ve cussed you out anyway, but you know what’s the wonderful thing about this being MY blog and not yours? that i can both delete your bullshit AND tell you that i hope you get your nose punched so hard it’s broken beyond recognition.

on another note, if you’re someone who puts the devoraks in christmas stuff thinking it affects no one, here’s a great example of how that’s a fucking lie. there’s a lot of things i can understand, like, for example, “hey you should’ve done this in dms”. however, given this is what you enable, i am absolutely going to put you in the same sack, given your fantastical ignorance and stubborn impassivity because this doesn’t personally affect you got someone pulling up nazis in my fucking inbox.

fuck off. if you think a valid reply to be asked to not to something because it’s disrespectful, and in this case antisemitic, is bringing up the fucking nazis, then i genuinely hope you share the same fate all nazis yous share: getting a brick to their faces

Antisemitism and Accountability in the Arcana Fandom

I debated making any kind of post about this for a minute because I haven’t reblogged any posts to this blog in a selfish effort to keep this blog “discourse free,” but this isn’t just “discourse,” and though I’m just an OC blog in a tiny little niche corner of the internet, I have almost 1000 followers, most of whom, I assume, are a part of the Arcana fandom in some fashion, and I feel like this is one of those topics where silence = compliance, and I do not want to endorse that.

Since I joined this fandom about a year and a half ago, the topic of the Devorak siblings (but more specifically Julian as Portia is not as popular a character among artists) being heavily Jewish coded and people blatantly disregarding that has come up at least a half dozen times. 

Like clockwork, every Halloween someone draws one or both of them with horns, or other devil iconography, and every Christmas someone draws one or both of them wearing Christmas sweaters or taking part in other Christmas traditions (which, like it or not, is an overly commercialized Christian holiday, regardless of your own personal beliefs or celebrations). And this has been happening before I even joined the fandom, as the game was in development and chapters for the main three routes were being released for about two years before I played it.

The “Devorak siblings are Jewish” headcanon was actively endorsed and supported by the Original devs of the game, back when they were active in the fandom space (which was before my time here). And if you played the extended tale where Julian and the MC go to Nevivon, that endorsement is solidified through their customs there. (Other people, especially those who are actually Jewish, have gone into more detail about the significance of the Devorak’s names, designs, and Nevivon itself, but I won’t expand on that here.)

And while I would understand that if you are not familiar with Jewish customs/stereotypes/practices, you might not catch what is mentioned in his route as well as the extended tale that was recently released—this conversation comes up so often that at this point you have to actively try to ignore it. We just had this conversation over Halloween, not even two months ago!

However, the issue here that I really want to speak on is the lack of accountability, and how quickly people jump to defend those in the wrong and attack the people who are actually hurt by the wrongful actions taken. 

And this statement applies to much, much more than antisemitism, but that is the topic at hand, so that is what we are focusing on.

In this latest instance—though there have been many others—the artist kailarts drew Julian in a Christmas themed sweater as part of her Arcana Christmas sticker set. Here is a very short summary of what was wrong about her actions:

Posted the art of Julian wearing a Christmas sweater during Hanukkah

Largely ignored comments about putting him in a Christmas sweater, and went so far as to say that she received “mean comments” about it on Instagram

Reuploaded the art on her original post with the Christmas sweater changed to a menorah — and later put Portia in the same sweater — without ever acknowledging that what she did was wrong

Treated Hanukkah as “Jewish Christmas” by lumping it together as part of a Christmas sticker set to make further profit off of an error

Yet, despite this, she has only received support or compliance from the fandom at large, both here and on Instagram, while those who called her out on her actions have received hateful anons spouting Nazi rhetoric on her behalf. 

She may not have had anything to do with the Nazis who think it’s somehow appropriate to come into someone’s inbox after seeing them protest against antisemitism and send them death threats—but that is what her art, and the fact that no Public Apology or acknowledgment was made endorses.

That is what silence endorses.

I understand this is a little pocket of the internet, and at the end of the day, what happens in the Arcana fandom matters very little, but if you are not willing to stand up against hateful rhetoric in even the smallest of spaces, you will be compliant to it in a far broader sense.

And if you are one of those people who think it’s okay to be a vile piece of shit in someone’s inbox (with anon on of course, because you don’t actually want to be known for your rancid, racist, antisemitic takes) mine is wide open, baby, and I’ll leave anon on just for you. I just make no promises that I’ll give you the reaction you want, as I would rather spend my limited brain power on things that make me happy.

Hold people accountable for the mistakes they made, and for fuck’s sake don’t attack the people who were negatively impacted by the mistake in the first place. And if you make a mistake, apologize for it, acknowledge that what you did was wrong, and don’t try to make a profit off of it.

It's from Yuuki Yuuna Is A Hero. I'm actually kinda "eh" about this series, but watch it for the action scenes because it's the best I've seen from the genre.

Your art is beautiful! Your lines your movements in the animation ahhhh I love it. I want to study animation too but I'm not sure. What would you recommend for an aspiring animator? Also keep up the amazing work!!

First thing I recommend is "be sure!" if you're not sure.  Animation is a whole hearted commitment or it won't be a fun ride, because it's hard work!  And you'll want it/need it to have some element of fun to counter the hard work.

But, as for recommendations, are you looking for recommended school/general advice/point-in-XYZ-direction?

For interim advice, I offer: I think the kindest thing you can do for yourself to help artistically is to study life.  Life drawing, but not just figure life drawing - draw the world.  People, places, & things.  Big and small; interesting and boring.  For animation itself, figure life drawing is very important, but don't neglect all of the other breathing and non-breathing things on earth.  As an artist in animation you'll probably have to draw a tonne of 'stuff' long before you actually animate anything.  So make friends with the concept of drawing All Of The Things Everywhere and you'll have good footing :D

I was tagged by @toyhenoctus for a show your WIPs trend, thanks for the tag! First two are from the last week or so, second two were from around Christmas but I really wanna finish them at some point... or at least clean them up haha

Trying to get back into drawing my ocs because they make me happy, and I wanna flesh Adara out, as she is in my head. I also replayed Asra’s route and forgot how much I loved it, so I’m now wanting to draw more from that!
