Jaxx I go through so many fics. There are so many Good fics. Three is such a small number???

Connection – Fair Game. I woke up today with a bad case of the touchstarved and this was a balm on my yearning nerves; a bit of pre-relationship pining with no emptyheaded faffing about about it and a pinch of hurt/comfort to round out the bargain.

insubordination is just another way of saying i care (Cloqwork) and Hiding in Towers (Ironqrockwork) – These two go together because they’ve got the best Qrows I’ve seen and I keep them both in my inbox together so I can find them again at a moment’s notice. The character writing is just so fantastic across the board.

The Gang Kidnaps a Child – Gen, STRQ-era. I love just about everything Kablob and mylordshesacactus have written for the RWBY fandom and deeply appreciate the time and energy and work they’ve devoted to filling out and fixing Roosterteeth’s half-hearted non-portrayal of Mantle. Their Happy Huntresses Cinematic Universe is the best thing to come out of the show’s time in Atlas. But my home interest in RWBY is centered on Team STRQ, so I was only too thrilled when they turned that perspicacious attention to the gang. Still, I continue to look forward to the further adventures of Robyn and her girls.

Hey! I was wondering if you'd read any good fanfic recently. I'm looking for recommendations and you seemed like a good person to ask.

Well, assuming we’re talking RWBY fics...

The Happy Huntress Cinematic Universe by Kablob and mylordshesacactus is absolutely phenomenal, and it gives some much needed backstory for Robyn and Fiona.

Silver Rings and Golden Hearts by LacePendragon is also one of my favorites; it’s an Ironqrow Modern AU, with a mix of Fake Dating and Arranged Marriage. (If that’s not your ship, however...)

Blake_Belladonna_Defence_Force writes a lot of great Bumbleby fanfic, mainly AUs, and I’ve been enjoying Bruised Souls recently.

One of my friends (Coppergold_Mari) has been working on an antagonist-centric AU fic called Glimmer, which I highly recommend. (I might be a bit biased, but I’ve been beta reading it and it’s hysterical.)

So @mylordshesacactus​​ and I are...cowriting. In the Star War. Because it’s 2014 again, apparently. And she’s on point right now—

I should explain, the way it usually works when we co-write is that we’re both in a google doc and one of us is pushing forward while leaving brackets for things like names or whatever other details don’t matter in the moment, while the other is in reserve filling those brackets in, ready to switch positions as soon as the first one gets stuck on something. That’s how, when we have time to sit down and co-write, we can get frighteningly large amounts of writing done in a session.

The point is, right now we’re doing it, and Jo was on point and bracketed in a random clone battalion number, so while she keeps going I tab over to wook and check the existing ones to make sure we don’t accidentally use one that already exists and is associated with some Jedi other than Cere, and then I pick “206″ as a whim and write it down.

Aquarius is incredible, as always, and I really love the way that the dynamic between Pyrrha, Emerald, and Mercury is developing. These three characters are one of the most unlikely trios of characters in the show, and yet they just *work* together when you write them. It never would have occurred to me to set them up as a team, but now that I’ve seen them as a group, they’re amazing.

Part 2: So, if you‘re willing to talk about it, I’m curious how this concept occurred to you and your coauthor, and how their dynamic developed in your minds before/as you wrote the story!

So the way that this started was a MILLION YEARS AGO while v5 was airing I was toying around with the thought of “what if Cinder took Pyrrha prisoner instead of killing her” which led naturally to the thought of “eventually she’d escape with Emerald’s help”

—which, brief digression to point out how weird it is that “Salem lets one of her underlings torture the P in JNPR and this causes Emerald to help them escape because she can no longer repress her compassion” ended up being the actual circumstances of Emerald’s redemption firing in canon.

But I was mostly just playing around with it and then one day I idly had the thought of “haha since she survived the Fall and would be trying to return home, I wonder if you could get her to be playing Odysseus instead of Achilles”

So I go do a quick wiki scan to refresh myself on the Odyssey because it’d been a while, and I read “Athena feels sympathy for Odysseus and convinces Zeus to have Hermes order Calypso to release him”

And I stare at “Hermes” and I go: fuck.

Because the second I saw that I knew I had an entire plot. Streamline out Zeus because nobody likes him and you’ve got Athena (Odysseus’s patron goddess with a knack for disguises) convincing Hermes to help her rescue Odysseus from Calypso. Which is why in the great big list of who is playing what Odyssey allusion in Aquarius (which is a thing that exists) Mercury is the only one whose primary role is, in fact, his canon allusory basis.

(I say primary because, true to RWBY fashion, roles shift around—Em and Merc are Athena and Hermes but also Odysseus’s crew, Cinder has aspects of both Calypso and Polyphemus, etc.)

That’s how the idea came about, through playing around with the allusions (this is always a GREAT starting place for RWBY content, fyi) and then we thought about how the three of them would interact, and that led to...this weird, weird dynamic of Emerald and Mercury on the run with the girl they helped kidnap and let Cinder torture for months on end. Awkward hijinks and trauma-bonding ensue.

Personally like using Hero Forge to make virtual minis of characters, cause Sims actually gives me too many options and I get overwhelmed. Face blindness is fun!!

General vibe? Uh…hmm. Wow that’s hard to put in a short statement. Hmm…TRAUMA and GAY and OVERTHROWING THE GOVERNMENT so you know the normal stuff I’m into I guess.

I very much want to write it someday and it’s probably years off but it’s gonna have some seriously high-octane stuff in it so like…readers beware etc.
