Christine Daaé, Gaston Leroux’s Phantom of the Opera, 1909

Oh how interesting! Both Count Dracula and Erik find Tokaji a wine fit for serving their prisoners - I mean - esteemed guests. And chicken too!

I’m not so sure this is just a coincidence. While Dracula was written too late for Erik to have read it, Leroux almost certainly read it and made this reference to it in his own novel published twelve years later. It would have been fun if Erik had been overtly trying to emulate Count Dracula to impress or frighten Christine, but it’s just as fun to think Leroux dresses Erik in references to gothic literature to impress and frighten us, the readers.

The Tokay and lack of appetite plus the coffin bed make a strong case for Leroux stanning Stoker:

The Count has his coffin-home and Erik has his open coffin under a canopy like the drama queen we love:

Tokaji or Tokay is a sweet wine from the Tokaj region of Hungary and Slovakia. Königsberg (now Kaliningrad) is an ancient city on the Baltic Sea. It used to be part of Prussia. Then Germany. It is currently part of Russia. I assume that by the “Königsberg cellars” he meant the cellar of the Königsberg Castle. It definitely had wine cellars and, even though it isn’t anywhere near the Tokaj, it probably had wine from all over the world. This detail seems a little random, but again, Teixeira’s translation fails us!

In the original French, the bizarre reason Erik gives for taking wine from the cellars of Königsberg is that “Falstaff sometimes frequented” them. I don’t know Verdi’s Falstaff well enough to know if this is true, or has any importance to the opera. This could all just be a big inside joke between Leroux and his opera and wine loving friends.

Imagine Erik creeping around this old castle just to steal some wine. Sadly, this castle is no more. It was bombed in 1944 and the ruins were later destroyed by the Soviets.

Happy Solar Eclipse Day! 🌞

Here's the first total solar eclipse photograph taken 173 years ago (28 July 1851) by Johann Julius Friedrich Berkowski, a Prussian known for his ability as a daguerreotypist, at the Royal Observatory in Königsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia).

This was the first occasion that an accurate photographic image of a solar eclipse was recorded.

Telegram channel 112 reported that before the fall, the fighter jet begun to descend, but an explosion sounded in the air an the Su-30 pitched and fell(..)

P.S. Good news! Any downed Su-30 in the vicinity of Königsberg, occupied by the Russians, is a very pleasant event for the security of the Baltic region! We are definitely not upset about the poor quality work of the Russian aviation mechanics and engineers...

Комісія зі стандартизації географічних назв за межами Польщі, що діє при Головній геодезичній службі країни, ухвалила рішення більше не називати російський Калінінград – Калінінградом, а область – Калінінградською. Як йдеться у комюніке, опублікованому 9 травня, на своєму засіданні 12 квітня комісія вирішила, що для міста з російською назвою Калінінград рекомендують уживати лише польську назву Крулевець.

Комісія додала, що для адміністративної одиниці, в якій розташоване це місто, рекомендують польську назву Крулевецька область, а не Калінінградська.

У комюніке зазначили, що зміна набуде чинності з дня оголошення, тобто у вівторок 9 травня 2023 року.

Комісія зі стандартизації географічних назв при внесенні змін врахувала, що "місто, яке зараз має російську назву Калінінград, відоме в Польщі під своєю традиційною назвою Крулевець (Królewiec)", і що нинішня російська назва є штучною та не пов'язана ні з містом, ні з областю.

"Факт присвоєння великому місту поблизу польських кордонів імені Калініна, злочинця, співвідповідального, серед іншого, за ухвалення рішення про масове вбивство поляків (Катинський розстріл), має в Польщі емоційний, негативний характер", – йдеться в заяві комісії.

Комісія підкреслила, що географічні назви, окрім ідентифікаційної функції, можуть мати символічну функцію, і що "нинішня російська назва міста є елементом російського символічного простору, нав'язаного також аудиторії за межами країни".

Una serata stupenda per tornare a un rito cui ero mancata nelle ultime edizioni (oltre ai due anni di chiusure covid). C'erano più di centomila persone. Ed è stato bello 💞💞💞 ascoltare voci amiche che incrociandoti di nuovo dopo tanto tempo ti dicono con l'inflessione del dialetto: "Te sei uguale".

Lo scrittore tedesco Rudolf Borchardt, originario di Königsberg, diceva che Pisa era un impero delle vele diverso da tutti gli altri. È vero, quest'anima in alcuni momenti si sente ancora.

Grazie, Pisa, per la bellezza, la poesia e il dono dell'arte che generosamente mi hai offerto.
