#just...... god the parallels between them

currently writing a thing about how ishmael and heathcliff parallel angela and roland, and god, i love how PJM writes platonic relationships so much. it feels extremely literary with a focus on the setting as a present entity between them and influencing their personalities and actions.
i always have found it fascinating that PJM does not confirm any pairings romantically. like, not even carmen and ayin are "canon" despite their relationship being one of the main factors of the presentation of lobotomy corporation. that matters a lot to me.
in addition, it's interesting how for the rare romantic relationships that do exist, their development as a couple is cut short. the only three canon romances are roland and angelica, tommy and merry, + xiao and lowell. angelica and lowell die, and tommy and merry... y'know. and then for 2/3rds of those couples, the story focuses on the platonic bonds *after* the loss of the romantic – roland finds a best friend in angela (as well as the game in general just taking place after angelica's death), and miris becomes xiao's sole grounding presence, and their mutual respect for each other is what drives xiao's character arc even more than the death of lowell.
in the project moon universe, romance is only ever used as a tool to explore the nature of intimacy in a setting hell-bent on destroying it. the platonic foundation of community and connections with others take priority – a simpler form of love and adoration. alternatively, the corruptive, deceitful kind gets explored as average people get drawn into the cults of personality that are difficult to resist.
i don't think anything written by PJM is fanservicey enough to be called shipbait, no matter the pairing. and i think moments like heathcliff saving ishmael and getting queequeg's ID were set up enough for me to predict it happening months before the canto released (evidence on this blog, but i was making these predictions even when hell's chicken was live). not because of ship/pairing bias, but because of the specific way project moon writes platonic relationships is being showcased strongly with ishmael and heathcliff.
library of ruina is one of my favorite games of all time, and it just rules seeing one of my favorite aspects of the game (the development between angela and roland) being reflected in my two favorite characters in limbus.
i genuinely haven't even shipped anything in project moon in the couple years i've been into the series, until my URL came on. but even more important than the ship, i just greatly value the spectrum of platonic love that project moon focuses on as a rule. i'm excited for how it'll inevitably develop in canto VI.

So, I've been thinking about the names in Dune. Specifically about the name Atreides. It means son of Atreus and is a reference to the Greek house of Atreus. They are cursed because Atreus grandfather Tantalos fed his own son to the gods. They noticed and revived his son (and that very same son would eventually become Atreus father) but because of that, the whole lineage was cursed. Atreus then had two sons named Menelaus (Helen's husband) and Agamemnon (the leader of the greek army in the Trojan war). Agamemnon now kills his daughter Iphigenia as a sacrifice for the gods so they can go to Troy. Because of that, when he returns he is immediately killed by his wife (who was Iphigenia's mother), Clytemnestra. However, they also have another daughter, Electra, and a son, Orestes. And it's him who I'd like to talk about. Because after the murder, Orestes is put in an impossible position: According to greek mythical law, you cannot kill your mother. Nonetheless, you're also obligated to avenge your father. Neither choice is the right one. Eventually, he chooses to kill his mother and avenge his father. And that is where I see a huge parallel between Paul and Orestes. Because Paul too is in a position where he can't really make the right choice. If he doesn't go to the south he won't be able to help the Freman and they may die, but if he does, he may (and does) cause a war that leads to the death of millions. Both are tragic protagonists in the sense of the greek tragedy. Both have to make a choice that at least seems to be impossible. They both choose to do what avenges their father. But the question is, did they really do it for the better good? Or are they just making a decision that brings them power? And while you can argue that Orestes at least in ancient tragedies doesn't have a choice due to his genre, is the same true for Paul? Or is he just hiding behind the idea of a tragic protagonist, denying his own responsibility?

In Stars And Time: Siffrin and Odin
WARNING, I AM ABOUT TO GO FULL OVERLY DETAILED LITERARY ANALYSIS BRAIN ON A VIDEO GAME, YOU ARE WELCOME TO HIT ME WITH "SOMETIMES THE CURTAINS ARE JUST BLUE" ABOUT THIS
Also, there aren't any major spoilers for In Stars And Time in this post so you can read it right now if you haven't played In Stars And Time. But you should play In Stars And Time, it's extremely good. Or at least you should watch a fully voiced LP of it.
Now that you have been warned:
Here are some depictions of the Norse god Odin in his aspect as "The Wanderer".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was a pretty common mythological motif for Odin. He would show up somewhere wearing the clothes of a humble traveller in an attempt to test people's hospitality. The big floppy hat and thick cloak were ordinary clothes, used to protect from harsh weather, and he uses his magic spear Gungir as a walking stick. The thing which marks him as Odin is that he only has one eye -- Odin gave up one of his eyes in exchange for wisdom, and no matter how good his disguise was, he would always be missing an eye.
The idea of an old man in a cloak and hat carrying a staff who was secretly an incredibly wise god-figure is certainly not unique to Odin, appearing in many different mythologies. The cloak, hat and staff of Odin were one of several mythological sources that informed a certain archetypal wizard and ensured that pointy hats were always thought of as "wizard hats" instead of just "practical traveller's hats".
Tumblr media
Now let's look at some pictures of Siffrin, the main character of In Stars and Time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hmm. We have big floppy pointed hat. We have all-enveloping cloak. We have eyepatch. We... well, admittedly, we don't have the staff/spear/walking stick (in-game he fights with knives), or the full beard. But we have three out of five!
Does this mean anything?
Probably not to be honest! The reason that Odin wore that kind of clothes was precisely because they were generic traveller's clothes: Odin wore them as a disguise, not as his everyday wear around Asgard. In In Stars and Time, one of Siffrin's defining character traits is that he is a traveller from an unknown land, but he's probably wearing the clothes precisely because of their practical aspects, not because he's a god in disguise.
Also, I don't think that there are that many thematic connections between Siffrin and Odin. Siffin didn't willingly trade his eye for wisdom: he lost it while protecting someone else. About the closest thematic parallel I can find is the idea of "Wisdom through suffering". Odin jumped through a lot of weird hoops to find wisdom -- trading his eye wasn't the half of it. And Siffrin goes through a lot of weird crab to learn how to navigate the dungeon of In Stars And Time.
One connection that I am willing to draw, though, is that the artist/designer of In Stars And Time was probably thinking about Odin and his counterparts when they were designing the character who is a traveller from an unknown land! And that's pie smell!
In conclusion, please play In Stars And Time, or if you are broke like me, please watch someone else play it.

Parallel Lines and Brothers.
[First] Prev <–-> Next
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#wei wuxian#jiang cheng#lan wangji#lan xichen#jin zixuan#Does anyone else think about the tragedy of the parallel lines? Of characters who are parallel lines?#Of running the same course as someone. Of echoing each other in perfect synchronicity.#It's more than being a foil. It's about being on the same path and being so near to each other.#and yet parallel lines never intersect. They cannot meet each other despite their existence being tied to another.#I think the brothers tragedy is just as much of a tragedy of parallel lines as is pre-resurrection wangxian.#Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian spend so much time running side by side and yet - they cant close this gap between them.#Even if their relationship never recovers - they are forever tied together through their past. The good and bad and ugly.#All the things that are left unsaid between them. All the love and sacrifices they made for each other that are never shared. Parallel line#I firmly believe any post-canon material that would have them be indifferent towards each other is just...really doing them a disservice.#And dear god the Lan brothers. They certainly love each other! Its a far fonder fraternal relationship than jiangxian (/platonic)#They fool you by having you think they have a good read on each other. Lan Xichen certainly wingmans + advocates for lwj!#But lets not forget - Lan Xichen by the end is in the reverse situation and headspace as Lan Wangji by the end of this story.#Lan Wangji is more free and open than he has ever been. He's in love. He's married. He and wwx are intersecting lines.#& LXC who grew up with and lived the same path as LWJ - who even is said to resemble him visually - his parallel line - shuts himself away#Despite all the love LWJ has for his brother I don't think he ever manages to reach him.

thinking about hal and davesprite. davesprite and hal. both splinters of striders. both discarded by the narrative and their friends and themselves. both technically making the decision to give up their humanity, but like. did they really have a choice?
davesprite had to become a sprite. sure, he chose to jump into the sprite, but what else could he have done? he had to travel back to alpha (killing the last friend he had left to try and save all of them) and he had to prototype himself. he probably knew that. and he did it anyway to try and save them all, and what did he get for it? his friends don't care about him - not like they used to, anyway. hes just the weird, spare bird dave that no one really knows how to handle. his own alt self, the one that took his place and his friends, doesn't seem to care - hell, he doesn't even acknowledge davesprite's existence after the scratch and the meteor trip and winning the game.
hal technically chose to create himself. he'd have the memories of it anyway, but how could he have known that he'd be the one stuck in the glasses? imagine just pressing a button and waking up, stuck in code and wires and circuits. you still have all your memories and emotions and experiences but you aren't 'you' anymore. your friends see you as a different person at best, and an annoyance getting in the way of talking to the 'real' you at worst.
davesprite goes from being his own person to just playing a role. davesprite. daves sprite. he isn't a person now, not to the game. he only exists to help dave now. and sure, he rejects it and does his own thing, but having your *name* taken and replaced with a descriptor of the role you're meant to serve? that's gotta hurt
hal has no choice but to accept the role forced on him. auto responder. it's literally programmed into him - he has to respond to dirk's messages when he's too busy. he has to pretend to be his old self only when it's convenient. hell, even his 'ironic' new name still forces him into a box. hal. the 'antagonist' of space odyssey. possibly one of the most famous ai in media. an dangerous ai who threatens and hurts those he's meant to help.
Tumblr media
and when they both finally get some semblance of importance, it isn't even as themselves anymore! they've been fused with nepetasprite and equiussprite and while they're still there and still happy, they aren't *them* anymore
they drive me so insane

Actually devastated that Yuuji and Suguru will never get to meet the parallels between them are so delicious I want them to have a conversation and to see their fucked up perspectives on what their purpose is

i can't stop listening to the 'purpose is glorious' track from this season's ost and thinking about how lovely the title and its meaning are. it's just such an amazing underlying theme in this show, and - while i do have criticisms about some of the choices made for the series finale - i really do feel the writers wholeheartedly delivered in sending that message home. for me personally, loki's ending is so gratifying and a large part of that is solely from viewing their arc's conclusion with the perspective of this theme in mind. to have spent years watching this character i hold very dear to my heart struggle to find belonging, to feel as though they matter and there is reason in their existence, finally get a chance to show - and recognize - their worth was so, so rewarding. and honestly, i think the message behind the phrasing of 'purpose is glorious' is all the more meaningful because of how loki's arc finished. yes, the outcome was bittersweet; yes, we're left knowing loki didn't get the happiness they undeniably earned after everything they'd gone through. it smarts something fierce to know their journey up until they deviated from their timeline and became a variant, as well as seen their eventual intended fate. the ache is only worsened after witnessing everything that happens within the TVA and the entirety of loki's character growth leading up to a redefining moment where they willingly choose to undergo a nightmarish amount of time in the endeavor to do the right thing. of course we want them to emerge victorious when they've struggled for so long, but that's not the point. loki's final moments are them forfeiting their right to a happy ending to preserve the stories of others because all stories matter and should inherently reserve the free will to be written; as sylvie says, loki makes their choice so their loved ones and life across the multiverse still have a chance to belong somewhere and embrace their place in the world. the take away is that even burden can be glorious. even with all the hardships of life - all the inevitable heartache, disappointment, and grief we encounter just by being alive - we have meaning in our existence. there is meaning in the trials we face, and the suffering we endure in order to overcome them. our pain gives us purpose; it gives us the ability to love, to grow from and for each other, and choose to sacrifice our happiness for the benefit of another. loki's purpose was forged in the bonds of those they met in their time at the TVA and the sense of value they gained from their companionship. their sacrifice perfectly conveys how the human capacity to love is one of cosmic greatness, which can ultimately surpass our instinctual desire to preserve one's self. we can move immovable mountains and challenge insurmountable adversity in behalf of the ones we love and their welfare. if that isn't an act deserving of glory, I don't know what is.
tldr; loki's purpose is the friends they made along the way = as the saying goes, 'tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all'. or: our own lives have purpose because of the connections we share with others, even when we are met with great loss.
#also this just shows the depth of love loki derived from knowing mobius and how they were changed for the better because of it#how mobius' initial - and repeated - acknowledgement of their potential is what gave them the necessary tools to rewrite their destiny#when loki first watches their fate on the sacred timeline their devastation is palpable; they now know they are meant to die -#at the hands of thanos after failing to save their brother -#after losing one last time#they see their final fate and know they were never meant to win; never to reach the respect and admiration theyve been chasing all this tim#but they're given a second chance at an ending - one they can be proud of and has meaning#and they SUCCEED; they ascend and take the throne not for power or control or even glory but because of the people they care for!!!!!!#loki accepts their burden with grace for the benefit of others; they escape the harrowing demise once preordained for them -#and while they mourn what they must leave behind they are fulfilled by the triumph of saving EVERYONE this time#the parallels between their sacred timeline ending and the finale's makes me way too emotional i am not okay#i have so many thoughts about the ost guahahauffh ignore me#i am obsessed with this track specifically like i want to write even more meta abt the significance of being used during mobius' last scene#okay these tags are way too long i'm shutting up now i'll see myself out#txt: icarus foaming @ the mouth analysis#char tags:#god of stories and faking death#peepaw from outerspace#loki meta#lokius#loki s2#loki season 2#loki spoilers#loki series#marvel#mcu#loki#Spotify

One must wonder how Yuding Zhenren feels during the events of Lotus Lantern...
[ID: A monochrome purple comic. In the first panel is Yuding Zhenren from the shoulders up, resting his head on his hand while reclining and looking up with a cold, angry expression, saying "Yang Jian." In the second panel is Erlang Shen from the shoulders up, looking down at Yuding Zhenren with a detached expression, responding "Shifu." The third panel zooms out to show Yuding Zhenren reclining on a mat while looking up at Erlang Shen, who is standing a few feet away. Yuding Zhenren says, "My... How you've grown." Yuding Zhenren and Erlang Shen both cast reflections on the pond beside them. While Yuding Zhenren's reflection looks largely unchanged, where Erlang's reflection should be, are the image of him and his sister as kids, crying and kneeling in front of Yuding Zhenren. End ID]

azi wasn’t poisoned or drugged or anything by metatron, he has just spent 6000+ years living in a system we know as an audience to be incredibly abusive and toxic.
crowley lost the false glamour of heaven ages ago and likely never had one of hell, but to azi he’s still in the thick of it. azi only fell for crowley roughly 80 years ago which is like NOTHING to them, and i believe this is not the last step to seeing through heavens abuse, but only one along the path, the ability to love and care for the “enemy”.
azi still sees heaven as wholly good and hell as wholly evil with crowley being a uniquely “good demon” worthy of becoming an angel again and why would he decline to switch back to the “good” side. azi has been so conditioned to see the two sides as the only options and as opposites morally that it is near impossible for him to see other options rn. he and crowley broke through the only two sides issue in season one, creating their own side alongside humanity. but much like an abused child coming back to their parent, he craves the love he perceived he had while he was on the side of heaven, unaware that that love is false and does not exist.
crowley, having already seen how fickle the affection of heaven is since he fell, refuses to return and be abused again, preferring to stay with humanity, or if he must, the side of hell who at least does not hide its darkness and cruelty.
