before I sleep, here is my definitive ranking on all the NPMD songs and some rambles on why I placed them there - also the ranking is based on how much I vibe with them (music production and lyricism have different rankings)
1. Hatchet Town (aka the hatchetfield trilogy theme song like this tune perfectly encapsulates the chaos Hatchetfield has to go through with every Starkid project pos-2018 and I love it - kinda wish it was a number that is more integrated with the plot with the kids tho BUT I REALLY DID LIKE that this melody was quite prominent in the other songs too)
2. High School is Killing Me (I've watched many teen centered musicals and believe me when I say that this song is one of, if not, the best introduction numbers out there for this genre - also it's a really great opening hook for a show)
3. Nerdy Prudes Must Die (FUCKING AMAZING HONESTLY - amazing way to REALLY re-establish a villain back from the dead and to establish the main theme for the nerds here: "I'm Not A Loser" (tho i fucking wish that motif was used a bit more))
4. Just For Once (everyone cheer for Lauren Lopez flexing not just her high tier soprano skills, but also how amazing of a fucking actor she can be like the concept of this song is quite layered and to pull it off both comedically and emphatically takes great lyrical and acting prowess)
5. The Summoning (a well-anticipated onstage introduction to all 5 of the LiB that balances out befuddling neon-entertainment with genuine fucking menace)
7. Cool As I Think I Am Reprise (A FUCKING GENIUS REPRISE I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH HOW COOL I FIND THEM RECONTEXTUALIZING THE OG SONG AND IF I LOVED YOU TO FIT THE SITUATION AND BOTH OF THE CHARACTERS GROWTH. LIKE IN TERMS OF THEMATIC IMPLICATIONS WITH CHARQCTER DEVELOPMENT, THIS SONG AND ITS SCENE WOULD BE THE TOP)
6. If I Loved You (I think this song could be a bit more honestly like I know how much Starkid has explored Steph and Pete's relationship in their other projects and I was really hoping that they would have it more portrayed here - however the song is a bop nonetheless and it matches neatly with their themes and the harmonies are top tier. I placed this higher than the next just due to my personal bias like I really do like the song)
8. Dirty Dudes Must Die (A GREAT TWIST THAT MAKES ME WANT ANOTHER MUSICAL ABOUT GRACE CHASITY'S DERANGED SELF - also the new context of the song Grace is reprising here makes her a villain even scarier than MAX of all people but that's just me)
9. Literal Monster (A very catchy beat and well structured song that provides a good introduction to a jock-bully with the god complex. also kinda foreshadowing to nerdy prudes must die)
10. Cool As I Think I Am (the instrumentation reminded me of Dear Evan Hansen ngl fjsjd but it really does sound like an I-Want song from a teen-musical which is of course what they are going for - it sounds very nice and earnest though and I loved how it was utilised in the reprise. However I still fucking wish that the I'm Not A Loser motif was used more)
11. Dirty Girl (look I'm sorry for ranking this quite low on the list but like there is no fucking way I'm using this as bait to lure other people in like they'd be scared away I'm sorry fjdjs BUT I love how Will and Angela perform this though like top tier starkid performances ever - its not just what I would listen to on repeat personally jgjdjs)
12. Go Go Nighthawks! (This one gets plus points because of FUCK YOU CLIVESDALE GO GET FUCKED. otherwise its nice and cheery and perfectly shows how happy everyone is without Max but um I kinda wish it could be a bit more especially in terms of showing how happy the other nerds are now that Max is gone but that's just me)
13. Bully The Bully + Bury The Bully (Look I couldn't decide which was better like they both are the same melodies so like gjxjs these two are cute though and I liked seeing the 5 kids bonding in Bully The Bully since we don't get that many scenes with them)
14. The Best Of You (the pop-punk happy number is a staple of teen-centered musicals and it does really sound nice - just isn't that much of a standout compared to the others.)

… I heard talk of a playlist. Any chance you’re willing to share a) playlists (I go feral for them) or b) a handful of songs you associate with the characters? Also no sweat if you don’t wanna, bc I personally… am not sure I’d want to subject people to MY Lupin playlists heheh
OH I MEANT MY BIG PLAYLIST OF LIKE YUJI OHNO although. i have not been immune to associating these freaks with music for um. 5 years now. as a whole i have no idea how id put it into playlist form officially BUT I CAN GIVE YOU SOME TEENY PIECES!!!
lupin: hrm. razzle dazzle from chicago. it’s all about those bullshit theatrics baby OH MY GOD AND WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES BY THE DOOBIE BROTHERS. BIG LOOP SONG TO ME
jigen: billy joel gives me jigen energy but especially new york state of mind. you know? you know. i’m looking over this after “finishing” it and everybody has two songs but him. but it would be. funny to put assassin princess by mitchie m.
fujiko: BIG SPENDER BY PEGGY LEE for obvious reasons but also piano x forte x scandal by oster project for OTHER obvious reasons!! ESPECIALLY the instrumentals like really if vocaloid isn’t your thing just listen to the backtrack and you will understand everything at once
goemon: FUCK i can’t remember the last time i found a goemon banger outside of the franchise itself because i always think of fairy night when i think of him. like the. the lupin song BUT IT’S SUCH A STRONG ASSOCIATION i guess. hm. let’s do laughter in the rain by neil sedaka. simple but pleasant happy memory type stuff
zenigata: FUCK (but with a slightly different intonation) arguably new kid in town by the eagles applies to. everyone. but i think he deserves the treat here since he's just statistically more unhappy!! yippee! also love trial by 40mp if i wanna be funny. because it is, it is funny,
i think my problem is that it’s much easier for me to find songs that. sound the way lupin looks. to me. if that makes any sense at all. like, as opposed to tying them down to specific characters each time. lyrics? only occasionally. instrumentation? ENTIRELY. but like foolish heart by steve perry and hisstocrat from super mario 3d world were not meant to be on the same playlist so it’s a bit messy up in here (i’m pointing at my noggin)

cinnamon!! got any predictions for mikoto and kotokos trial 2 cover songs?
so embarrassing that i was like "aw i wish i could think of something else to post for today" and then i shot up like a bullet going "OH NO WAIT I RECIEVED AN ASK!!!"
um uhm well. hmm. my track record for this has been 1/3 so far so i'd like to see how wrong i am! i don't think these two could get robbed out of any specific cover.
there's tons of different mikoto options i've seen and i want them all tbh. horrid that we're only allowed three when he could easily do so many more... in my perfect reality he protected mahiru from the yandere allegations and covered psychogram himself.
although, funny story with mikoto is that i was discussing potential covers with gunslingr and they said "i fear mikoto will have a chimera cover" right before i said i hope he gets one. my face literally beat red it was soooo embarrassing!!!!
Tumblr media
even if i'm still horrified over the memory, i'll still stick to my guns and say i'd like a chimera cover. is it deserving over other songs? absolutely not! but it feels right to me. the cover art depicting miku with three sets of one's—one yanking her hair, one grasping her shoulders, and one praying—really struck me as rgbkoto. especially with the different color palettes bathing one part of her in warm colors while the other is colder (there's a similar mikoto artwork i believe?) there's also the song's name "chimera" which relates to mikoto being made up of multiple identities stitched together instead of a singlet.
the song's theme of reinventing yourself for the sake of attention and hating it also really strikes me as mikotocore. i'm not too familiar with his story just yet but from what i've gathered he struggles with maintaining this easy-going facade in order to blend in with society.
off-tapic but i'm not sure if he works for a black company but... yes, it doesn't justify murdering an innocent bystander (yet) but i will be very upset on his behalf if that turns out to be true. the industry culture of stressing your artists out, making them work overtime, drinking themselves to death, paying them pennies, and then forcing them to maintain this happy-go-lucky attitude—it drives me insane! treat your workers better asshole!!!!!
sorry had to get that off my chest >< but back to the chimera cover! if the black company theory is true then it reads to me like mikoto urging himself to wear this sweet facade whilst loathing everything around him. as an extension of monopoisoner it also has the same "you" themeing and sexual undertones.
Don’t be greedy or you'll drown in poison -> hehe monopoisoner reference
Your face looks like you're trying to suppress your EGO But watch your mouth, love how unsatisfied you are And be sure to swallow any uncouth words
Aw, I just don't know who I am I'm cute Chimera who's changed ←new??That blotchy pattern was a message I'm a pretty little Chimera made to be desired ←♡♡♡
kotoko's a bit harder because my thought process is ❤️❤️❤️ she's so cool! she'll get a cool song! and that's kind-of it.
unfortunately my knowledge of deco is mostly locked into the mvs on his main channel and utaite rachie's cover so uhm. i'm sure there's older songs perfect for her as an extension of anti-beat but dear lord i do not know them. so uh, just going to off of "kotoko would sound so wonderful singing this!!"
Tumblr media
I KNOW!! I KNOW!! TWO BORING ANSWERS BACK-TO-BACK LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!!!!
i'm honestly not a fan of reversible campaign so i'd genuinely prefer if she got 118 or another high-energy song. but hm... it once again simply feels right to me. i feel like kotoko is powerful enough to grab me by the throat and force me to like the song through sheer instrumental change and vocals. rather than mikoto where i can connect him to the entire song, it's really only these two lyrics which strike me as kotokocore:
Using my worthless ego as a pretext I just want to waver between black and white
she insists she doesn't need to be traumatized in order to act this way... she hates herself like everyone else does in the prison. even as she tasks herself as judge, jury, and executioner, i highly suspect its because no one else fought for her. the world she's in is divided between the weak and strong, nothing else. the lashing out in anti-beat slowly dies down into reversible campaign as she considers her feelings. or uh, something like that?
apart from that my absolutely copium cover desires would be theory of negativity, undead alice, ane ghost rule. i feel like those are deffo going to my/haruka/shidou but. but she'd totally slay them. god bless. alternatively for her t3 cover i hope she covers undercover it'd be iconic.
once again kotoko sits in a strange place for me because everything she does will be perfect to me. she's just so cool...!

First Impressions part 6
PROMISE ME IT’S GONNA BE ALRIGHT, WHOA, OH-
Georgia
They’re still here, huh.....Wonder how long before they qualify again, pfffff.....
Choir and drums!? OK, I’m interested! O__O
Other songs are doing similar to this, but I’m still liking it so far!
I wish I had more to say about this......um, the chorus is nice and big
This is probably the best entry Georgia’s sent since......geez, “Keep The Faith”? I’m not blown away, but I’m impressed! They’re trying for sure! O__O  What a GRAND song! Potential grower!
Better than last year?: Yes, but not by a LOT cuz of how memorable Circus Mircus were
San Marino
Another rock song!? That’s two in a row from them!
Do I like it more than the Slovenian song tho....? Let’s see.....
I like the vocals.....and it’s bouncy.....
Y’know what? I’d say it’s pretty close....I’m gonna have to listen to them back-to-back XD
This is fun! Nothing more to say! It’s yet another song with energy and a nice beat! The best kind of rock
Ooooooh, nice ending. Good departure from the abrupt ones XD
Uhhhh....yeah, good, solid song from San Marino! Dunno how well it’ll go over, but I liked it
Better than last year?: Definitely yes. The much better song, altho “Stripper” had fun staging. Will this one? We’ll see.....It seems this song’s more serious
Austria
Um.......what the heck is that title?
I’m expecting an explanation quickly. You don’t title your song something like that for no reason
WHAT-
OK, DO CONTINUE-
This is a CONCEPT
Y’know what? I’ll stop typing and listen. Entertain me
*a bit later* What am I listening to? XD
This is something you CANNOT prepare for- This is the “Eat Your Veggies” of the year-
I-it’s fun, but um......WHY XD
It’s....memorable, that’s for sure! O__O
No but seriously, I’ve read Edgar Allen Poe’s work in middle school and it hurt my brain just as much as this song did, so......i-it tracks.....I guess....?
.......S-seriously, what
Better than last year?: NO!
Albania
Right away, this sounds like......an Albanian entry
OK, it’s getting more interesting
It’s less out there than last year’s, but I like it more. It’s got more actual singing
I wouldn’t say I love it, but it’s a potential grower that I definitely like right now. It just.....sounds a BIT like I’d expect from Albania, but a BIT stronger
Better than last year?: Yes
Lithuania
A Eurovision entry named “Stay”? You got a BIG act to follow for me....
More Lithuanian? Cool! .....Nevermind, it’s in English
Another ballad, huh?
“My heart is bleeding....I need your healing...” OK, maybe there’s something for me here-
OK, it picked up! I like this now! If I had to say, I’d call this comparatively toward the bottom of my ranking with how strong the competition is tho
But the lyrics are good.....and I like the drum part....It’s not bad
I need to be healed.....I need your healing.....
(Gosh, multiple of my interests are being pandered to this contest....Strange...)
Better than last year?: About the same....? Maaaaybe a slight no....?
Australia
Finally....the rulers of Why Are You Still Here
......These lyrics sound like clickbait in song form- *shot*
OK, it was just the first verse XD
WGHOAESGFDG CHORUS HELLO-
OH MY GOD
HOLY CRAP
IT’S GONNA BE ALRIGHT!!!!
OK, HOW DO WORDS, I LITERALLY CANNOT, I DIDN’T SEE THIS COMING
WHY IS IT METAL NOW, HELP
I PROMISE, I PROMISE, I PROMISE IT’S ALRIGHT, OK
JUST DON’T STOP, DON’T STOP!!!!
THAT FLIPPING INSTRUMENTAL!!!!!
IT’S ALRIGHT!!!!!  ALRIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!!!
I TAKE IT BACK, I TAKE THE CLICKBAIT COMMENT BACK
It’s over!? NOOOOOOOO-
.........
...........
I have no idea WHAT THE HECK I just listened to, I just know that it was INCREDIBLE.....a-and I need to listen to it again but I can’t-
OK, this is just NARROWLY my new favorite, neck-and-neck with Finland, I’m gonna need to listen to both of them more to make my decision
But even tho both songs b-blindsided me in the best way, th-this one got the bigger r-REACTION outta me, so I’m gonna give it the s-slight edge
H-holy c-crap.....on a stick, what the HECK......@___@
Better than last year? YES!!!!!! (Altho they were still really good last year)

[𝓡𝓮𝓺𝓾𝓮𝓼𝓽] 𝓔𝓿𝓮𝓻𝔂𝔀𝓱𝓮𝓻𝓮 𝓘 𝓛𝓸𝓸𝓴 [𝓣𝓻𝓮𝓷𝓽/𝓡𝓮𝓪𝓭𝓮𝓻]
𝓡𝓮𝓪𝓭 𝓸𝓷 𝓐𝓞3
Prompt 16. “what happened to us? really, what the fuck happened?” For Anonymous - hope you enjoy! 💖
When you heard NIN were returning to Cleveland for a one night show, you suddenly found yourself purchasing a ticket the night of the show, your better judgment be damned. As you stood in the crowd, anxiously waiting for the band - waiting for him - to come out on stage, you wanted to slam your head in the wall for doing this in the first place. What were you even thinking of coming there? You knew seeing him again would only make your heart ache more than it already did; after all this time, the wounds hadn’t healed.
No matter. You reminded yourself that, if the anxiety became too much, you could leave at any time. No big deal.
When the opening band finished their set, you held your breath. In the years since you saw him last, you avoided hearing his music as much as you could, ignoring his CDs when you went to the music store, changing the radio when the radio hosts announced they were playing a new single of his…you had no idea what you were expecting when the hellish guitar riffs started gradually building in volume. When it ended as soon as it started, something else that was new to you began-
And with “I am the voice inside your head…” bursting out of his lungs and into the mic, Trent made his characteristically dramatic appearance, and any thought of leaving early was gone when you laid eyes on him for the first time in forever.
His whole look had changed since you last saw him. Gone were the dreads, replaced with a wild and dark mane framing his face. He was dressed from head to toe in black material, and covered in a thin layer of starch; black shorts and garters that showed off his legs, black boots for him to stomp around on stage, a baggy black t-shirt that clung to him as the show went on and sweat dripped down his back. Some things didn’t change though - Trent rammed into his bandmates, threw his instruments like a bratty toddler, and screamed his heart out with every note. It was just like the old days, when he was starting out and you attended as many gigs as you could.
Despite the pain of the past, you couldn’t tear yourself away from him the entire night. It felt like it was only yesterday that he was performing in tiny clubs while you watched from the sidelines, and there he was now surrounded by people shouting along with the lyrics he wrote. And then there was the music itself - uglier, angrier than before, and utterly hypnotic.
The night winded down with a song you knew all too well, one that haunted you ever since you first heard it. A spotlight beamed down on him from high above, and you found yourself singing the exact same words as him.
“Everywhere I look, you’re all I see…just the fading fucking reminder of who I used to be.”
For a brief second, you wondered if he could see you in the audience right then.
After the show, like someone possessed by a powerful spirit you felt your legs walk all the way backstage, avoiding security as much as possible. When you got to the door leading to the greenroom, you couldn’t sneak past the guard in front of it.
“Your backstage pass,” He demanded.
You sighed, defeated. “I don’t have one.”
“Then I’m gonna have to ask you to lea-”
“Wait a sec,” Said a voice from behind the guard.
You didn’t need to peek your head over to see who said it.
The guard turned around, still obscuring your view, and nodded his head. “Fine.” He moved to the side, and you stepped into the room, your pulse like thunder in your eardrums. The other band members, all changed out of their stage garments and into fresh and sweat-free clothes, looked on with curiosity.
Standing in the middle of the room, Trent stared at you. “Hey,” He said, not even trying to hide the shakiness in his voice.
You bit your lip. “Hi,” You said back stiffly.
He shoved his hands into the pockets of his dark gray cargo shorts. “Long time no see, I guess.”
You shrugged. “Yeah.”
Trent sighed. “Um, it’s gonna get loud in here in a few minutes, because of, um, people coming by to drink and stuff. Do you want to…?”
“Go somewhere else?” You finished. “Sure.”
Wordlessly, he led you deeper into the backstage area. Members of the opening band, roadies, and groupies passed by you both, asking Trent where he was taking you; he ignored them. When you two were finally away from the afterparty that was beginning, he leaned on a wall and crossed his arms. You stayed standing and kept your distance, not too close but not too far.
“Why’d you come over?” He asked. “Tonight, I mean.”
Not knowing what to say, you shook your head. “I have no idea. I just did.”
Trent paused for a few seconds, and looked down at his boots. Then he said, “How are things going? You still working that shitty job?”
“Yeah,” You replied sadly. “I’m gonna try to apply to another place soon, but we’ll see. You’re doing pretty well for yourself.”
His face flushed, as if he was somehow embarrassed at his successes. “Have you, y’know…seen anyone recently?”
You pressed your lips together, then exhaled through your nose. “Well…No, not really.”
“Oh.” The both of you fell into an awkward silence, avoiding the other’s eyes. He touched his arms repeatedly, occasionally fingering his shirt. You considered turning around and leaving, until he spoke up again, much more sullen than before. “Do you remember how we broke up?”
Your heart felt like it was sinking into your stomach; you took in a deep, sharp breath. “I- I don’t know, it’s been so long,” You stammered. “I just remember…a lot of shouting matches and make up sex, I guess.”
Trent chuckled softly - and you realized how much you missed his laughs. “Yeah, I remember that too.” His face quickly turned into a grimace. “Fuck, what happened?”
“What do you mean?”
“What happened to us, I mean.” He moved away from the wall and stood straight. “Remember when we went to the video store like every Saturday to watch the dumbest shit they had? Or when we would get so drunk at bars we had to call our friends to pick us up? Or-”
“I do remember,” You said. The corners of your eyes were stinging with tears. “I remember all of that.” You looked up to meet his eyes - and he closed the distance between you with a tight embrace. As the tears ran down your cheeks, he caressed your back gently.
You don’t know how long you spent with him holding you like that, until you both broke away; your hands remained locked to each other’s.
“You okay?” He asked, and you nodded. Your eyes widened when he abruptly pressed his lips to yours, only to close them and savor every bit of the kiss after so long. Trent pulled away, and looked you in the eye. “I miss you,” He whispered.
“I miss you too,” You whispered back.
Letting go of your hands with a degree of reluctance, Trent groaned. “They’re probably wondering where the hell I am right about now. Do you want to come?”
“Can’t.” You couldn’t even try to hide your disappointment. “Work tomorrow and all.”
Trent frowned. “We have to leave first thing tomorrow for the next show. This fucking tour feels like it’s never going to end, but if it does…” He swallowed dryly. “I’d like to see you again. If you have the time, at least.”
You broke into a bright grin. “Of course.”
He gave your hand another squeeze, then leaned forward to give you a kiss on the forehead. “I can’t wait.”
Soon after, you left the venue. Your lips and forehead still tingled with the memory of his kisses, your arms begged for his embrace once again. On the drive back home, anxiety washed over you…was he really going to try and meet up with you after the tour? Was he lying? What if he did come back, but things once again corroded into a cycle of arguments?
But then again, what if this time things were different?
That night, you dreamt of Trent’s return, and all the possibilities of what would come next.

hi there! congratulations on 700!!! i love your writing so much! i was wondering if i could get a 🕊 with tasm!peter parker?
i use she/her pronouns. i’m a capricorn sun, libra moon, and leo rising. my personality type is INFJ-T (not sure exactly what that means, but it seems important).
i’m currently a junior in college studying psychology and criminal justice. after i graduate with my undergraduate degree i would like to get my master’s degree in mental health counseling.
i suffer from generalized anxiety disorder as well as major depressive disorder. my mental health is pretty stable right now but i have struggled a lot in the past. i’m a little over 4 years clean from self harm and am very open about it because i want to help people that are going through the same thing i went through.
i am very much a people pleaser, and i think a lot of that stems from being the oldest child in my family and being the only daughter :). i’m a very independent person and struggle with talking to new people and making friends.
music is a big part of my life as well. i love listening to it, writing songs, and karaoke in the car! writing poetry and reading are my favorite things to do other than listening to music. i also have an obsession with pinterest and love creating moodboards!
i hope this is the right amount of information. again, congratulations on 700 lovely. you deserve the world and more <3
thank you so much lovely! you deserve the world and more 🤍🦢
🕊 - send me a character and as much information about yourself as you’d like and i’ll write a blurb about what i think your relationship with that character would be like!
"Hey, Peter?" You stood bashfully at the door to his room, guitar in hand.
Your boyfriend looked up from where he was working on his web shooters and smiled. "Hey, dove. What's up?"
You bit your lip, a bit nervous. "I, um, I wrote you a song."
Peter's eyes widened. "You wrote me a song?"
You nodded shyly. "Yeah, I- I was just testing out some lyrics and it- it just happened."
Peter left his work desk and walked over to you. "Are you gonna play it for me?"
You fiddled with your guitar. "If you want me to."
"Of course I want you to." Peter grabbed your hand and rubbed his thumb over yours comfortingly. "I wanna hear any song my beautiful girl writes."
You blushed with a small smile and sat down, positioning your instrument just right. You took a deep breath and played the first chord.
"I've always wanted adventure "To face the great unknown "Explore things both evil and pure "I thought I'd have to do it alone
"But you walked in and you showed me "All I'd been yearning to see "You held me and finally I felt free "You kissed me, I tasted honey
"Oh, honey, you set me free "You grabbed my hand and then I could see "Oh, honey, you set me free "I don't have to do this alone"
The song went another verse and a second chorus, and when you looked up at Peter again he was staring at you in pure adoration.
"I love you," he said, looking like he was about to cry.
You giggled nervously. "I love you too. So did you like it?"
Peter rolled his eyes and pulled you into his arms. "Of course I liked it. It was the best thing I've ever heard."
You smiled shyly. "Thank you."
"Thank you." He kissed your head. "For writing such a beautiful song for me. I truly will never deserve you."
Then it was your turn to roll your eyes. "Oh, stop it. We deserve each other perfectly enough."
Peter smiled and kissed you softly. "If you say so."

🤡🛒🎢✨🎶🤗
🤡 What's a line, scene, or exchange you've written that made you laugh?
In chapter 20 of Causa Mortis when Cicero is entertaining the Forsworn and he tells his “Ulfric the Goatfucker” joke. Also, in the same chapter, Lumen tells Delphine she can’t enter her tent because there are “dicks everywhere.” I was going through something when I wrote that chapter.
🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.
Recently, I came to realize that yearning seems to be an ongoing theme. It’s not on purpose, really. I’m just familiar with it, and I guess I’m a believer in “write what you know.” There are also themes of recovery (but not necessarily redemption in Lumen’s case), abuse, trauma, etc.
🎢 Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?
Voidbound. But that’s because Lucien Lachance is a wild ride.
✨ Give you and your writing a compliment. Go on now. You know you deserve it. 😉
My writing is, um, readable? (I feel a little guilty that I can’t seem to tackle this one. I’m working on complimenting myself in therapy and I am not sure I’m there yet. This is very hard.)
🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately?
Sometimes. It depends on how my focus is. Songs with lyrics are quite distracting, so I try to stick with instrumentals. However, the song I have had on repeat while I am writing has lyrics in it! It just hits right. Give Me a Reason by Boy Harsher.
🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?
Just write and don’t worry about grammar or finding the right word. That can come later. A messy draft is better than a blank document, so allow yourself to write as messy as you want. No one has to see it, and we all have to start somewhere. My initial drafts are basically word salad. I spit out scenes, themes, dialogue, and everything else because I need to get it out of my head, and then I go back and string it all together.
Make use of all the writing software that is available. Grammarly and Hemmingway Editor are great tools and there are limited versions that are free to use.

The Who Reissue Reivew: Who's Next/Life House (Super Deluxe Edition)
Tumblr media
(UMe)
BY JORDAN MAINZER
After listening to all almost 10 hours of the latest reissue from The Who, I've come away with two thoughts: I'm glad Pete Townshend's vision for Life House has been totally documented, and I'm thankful Who's Next ended up exactly the way it did. The London band's 1971 opus is, full stop, a perfect album, and remastered over 50 years later, it sounds as vital as ever. Hearing "Baba O'Riley" doesn't just excite people experiencing it for the first time but wows those listening for the thousandth, from the opening chords to Dave Arbus' violin at the end. "Bargain" is the band's most underrated song in their entire catalog, Keith Moon's drums acting as a lead instrument, with John Entwistle's bass and Townshend's guitars providing the backbone. Nicky Hopkins' piano graces the two dramatic treatises on the very act of songwriting itself, "The Song Is Over" and "Getting In Tune". "Won't Get Fooled Again" remains a wildly anarchic song from a band that only went so far as to lightly poke fun at consumerism but was otherwise apolitical. And as much as Roger Daltrey was at the height of his vocal powers, belting during "Baba O'Riley" and unleashing one of the most famous screams in rock and roll on the final track, the two songs without him--Entwistle's "My Wife" and Townshend's brilliant choogle "Going Mobile"--shine bright.
So when you hear the demos from the failed Life House rock opera that turned into Who's Next, as well as sessions containing fan favorite songs recorded around the same time, do you question what made the cut? Could Who's Next have been even better? The short answer, and the only answer, is no. But the extended material, in conjunction with live recordings of two concerts in 1971 before and after the record was released, paints a fascinating picture of a band trying to figure out what it's best at. They were the first to advertise a rock opera in 1969 with Tommy, and Townshend was eager to write another one in Life House, an astonishingly ambitious, multi-media project with a convoluted plot and a desired presentation that seems to foreshadow postmodernism, the Internet, and the metaverse all at once.
Appropriately, the Lifehouse Chronicles demos (referring to the box set Townshend released in 2000) indicate a band where he's at the forefront, Moon's drumming notably taking a back seat on a groovier "Bargain". "Teenage Wasteland" shares some lyrical elements with the eventual "Baba O'Riley" but is structured like a prog rock song, and the gist of the lyrics emphase the quintessential masculine impostor syndrome that pervaded the band's earlier songs. "Love Ain't For Keeping" is less of a country ballad and Daltrey showcase, more an opportunity for Townshend to sneer over psychedelic wah-wahs. A 13-minute instrumental version of "Baba O'Riley" starts out exactly the same as the eventual version until the drums swallow in on themselves, the song growing quieter, delving into experimental ambiance, and warping in and out as if it were an electronic remix of the original. What the Lifehouse Chronicles does make you appreciate, on the other hand, is the individual greatness of gorgeous songs that stand on their own merits but wouldn't have sounded sonically cohesive within the Who's Next framework: the strummed "Greyhound Girl", barroom piano jaunt "Nothing Is Everything (Let's See Action)", and the layered "Pure and Easy". Plus, hearing a rawer, more fried version of "Going Mobile" is the closest you'll ever come to witnessing a live recording of the Who's Next standout the band never played in concert.
The two sessions included in the reissue pinpoint where Life House turned into Who's Next. The first contain recordings at New York's Record Plant with band manager Kit Lambert (that Leslie West of Mountain famously played on). Sonically, they're a bit muddier than the Olympic Studios sessions or what ended up on Who's Next. "Won't Get Fooled Again" is plodding, as is "The Note", an early version of "Pure and Easy". When Lambert and Townshend had a falling out about what, exactly, Life House was (Townshend had rejected Lambert's Tommy film script and told Universal Pictures that Life House was a new version of Tommy), the band went to Glyn Johns to produce, who suggested The Who make a single album instead of a rock opera. It's here that we hear versions of songs like "Love Ain't For Keeping" and "Bargain" that sound familiar, as well as stellar versions of tracks recorded for Life House that didn't make Who's Next. "I Don't Even Know Myself" sports clacking percussion from Moon, "Relay" chugs along wonderfully, and "Put the Money Down" juxtaposes Daltrey's huge vocals and Townshend's guitars, the closest the band ever got to Southern rock.
The sixth disc, containing alternate mixes and sessions from Townshend's home studio in Twickenham, is by no means essential, but it reminds you just how good The Who sounded as a result of participating in so many sessions, fine-tuned while at their creative peak. Versions of "The Seeker" highlight Townshend's fast-picked guitar and Moon's drumming, Daltrey's full-throated wails exemplifying what made this era of the band so thrilling. In a call to Live at Leeds, one of the best live albums ever, and one that the band simply released as a way to tide over hungry fans post-Tommy, The Who here include a stereo remix of Leeds favorite "Heaven and Hell". "Water"'s piano trills and call-and-response vocals preview the storming grandiosity of Quadrophenia, while the undeniably silly "Waspman", with its harmonica and vocal zipping, recall earlier, more absurd albums like The Who Sell Out.
The band's concert at the Young Vic Theatre in London, impromptu during album recording, and the site where the band planned to record sonic and visual footage as part of the Life House experience, proved to be the rock opera's death knell. Perhaps that was because fans were quick to shout requests for "My Generation" and "Summertime Blues", disappointed when Townshend announced "Water" instead. I like to think it's because the Who's Next songs sounded good on their own: "Love Ain't For Keeping", the upcoming single "Behind Blue Eyes", and a guitar solo-laden "Getting In Tune". By the time they played later that year at The Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, Who's Next was already out, and it's this concert, presented in full for the first time ever, that documents a band realizing where their newer, more ambitious material fit in with their classics. While they still opened with "Can't Explain" and "Substitute", by the time they performed the synth intro of "Baba O'Riley", fans started to cheer for the new material, too. Naturally, the biggest reaction erupted for a 17-minute version of "Magic Bus", Tommy material like "Pinball Wizard", and a blistering "My Generation". In due time, though, the band would be playing to true arenas, on the strength of, not in spite of, Who's Next. What this box set shows is a potential alternate timeline: If Townshend's vision had panned out, who's to say we'd still be talking about The Who in 2023?

Back at you with the fic asks!
17, 43, 77
17. Do I have a writing routine?
KINDA. once my brain actually does the typing, u need music in the bg. Whatever instrumental piece i have that matches the mood/style of the scene. And have that on repeat until the scene is over
43. Any trope/idea i'd like to write but haven't
um. idk it's a "trope" but like. i want to be able to like. Have my Korra and Asami make love. There's many reasons why I haven't (cis male, haven't been with a person with a vagina in a very long time, saw many meme's of like "male perspective" and junk that I want to avoid, etc) but like. I think my Korra and Asami definitely love each other and have been with each other for so long and that has to have happen. I've written around the moment before, and in a story that never gotten past the introduction, I had ways that could excuse me not writing exactly what was going on.
An idea that I had..that I refused to write was this...ultra spiritual journey that I threw korra in. She went into the avatar state and the world literally crumbled around her. She awakens in a dessert like void and has to like regain pieces of her soul and of the earth which helps her grow emotionally and spiritually. In the end she find's Asami. petrified in the sand. But in reality it wasn't Asami, just some spirit taken on her form. The spirit instructs Korra on one final lesson/instruction that would repair the worlds, but something of great value would be lost. but not forever. Korra would have to sacrifice her love of Asami for the world to be fixed, but Asami wasn't really gone. Through hard work and extreme determination, she could find her again. She would have a new name and new memories, All Korra had to do was to remember lyrics that the spirit gave her. And after many years Korra wanders the streets and pauses coincidentally at a small theater. she can hear the singer and finds it soothing. She listens to song, but it's different than the spirit told her, but it has the same lyrics. Korra rushes through the theater to see Asami. They sing the final lines together and then Asami's memories return. They kiss passionately and fade to black.
I never wrote it because I felt (and still feel) like I couldn't do this story justice. I loved it and kept it to myself. It's mostly gone, unfortunately. But certain songs in my computer remind me of key moments of it.
Lastly the Thousand Dragons Ascension. I have started it...but I'm not sure how to write most of it because...IT'S FUCKING GIGANTIC (3 MAJOR ARC SIZE) and......key moments are like...an animatic. I have NO idea on how to translate it to like....READABLE text lol
SORRY FOR LONG ANSWER
77. Why do I enjoy writing fanfic?
As a writer, I feel like I ignore to build the world. With fanfic...it's already built for me. Everyone reading it, already has a base understanding of how the world works and looks like. I focus more on the action of the scene, whether it be dialogue or movement or fighting, rather than the place where it's happening.
And also...INSTANT feedback LOL. when i get comments or kudos...UGH! I LOVE IT. SEROTONIN BAYBEE NEED MORE
