I cannot stress this enough:
BUILDING COMMUNITY AND ENGAGEMENT ON TUMBLR IS A TWO-WAY STREET.
Stuck for ideas? Try:
Send asks. It could be anything, even something super basic. Tell someone you like their blog theme or ask them what they think a character's favorite color is. Ask them if they have a secret hobby. Tell them you had an absolute banger of a slice of toast for breakfast. Literally anything. Give them something to talk to you about. You might even make a friend!!
Draw silly little doodles for your favorite piece of fanfic. Literally cannot stress this enough; even stick men art can be adorable and/or hilarious. And I guarantee you it'll make the author's day. A two minute sketch on the notepad app of your phone could genuinely be the reason someone updates their fic, or writes another one.
Write silly little drabbles for your favorite fanart. I used to love this back when I made fanart on my old Tumblr blog. People would reblog it with a silly little 100 word drabble based on the art and I. Would. Swoon. My thing made someone else make a thing!! Amazing!!
Make rec lists. It could be for fanfiction, themed blogs to follow, recipes, movies, anything. Ask people to share theirs. Ask people to give their opinions if they try out something from your list. You wouldn't believe how many of my fanfic bookmarks have come from seeing the blogs I follow recommend something. Because we have the same interests!! Because its even quicker than me scouring hundreds of tags on AO3!!
If someone posts writing or art, ask them questions!! Humans love to be asked things. Especially about things we have made. Ask them what inspired them to make the thing. How long it took them. If they have a favorite thing about it.
Tumblr's engagement and activity levels are not dying because of the website. They're dying because of us. If we're just sat existing in a sad, isolated little bubble, of course we're going to move on to somewhere where we get actual engagement. Where there are other people in the bubble.
We've become so obsessed with an entitlement to receiving and consuming while never actually giving anything back, and that has to die.
"Oh but there's no community for what I like on here."
Make. One.
Tell people about the thing you like. Get them interested. Engage with them about it. Give them a sounding board to share their thoughts and ask questions and create content to enjoy and consume. Make it a discussion and give them something to get involved in.
Find that one other tiny blog screaming into the void about it and scream together!! That's how this website works!!

OH MY GOD okay so a beloved follower of mine sent me an ask about my tristan mclean headcanons like in december but i accidentally deleted !!!!!!! the fuckcing ask !!!!!!!!!!!!!! so i'm making it a post. hope you don't mind. also sorry for the wait
most of my thoughts are things i can not share on this blog (this is the Normal blog for Normal things and not the fucked up torture i subject this man to on a regular basis. tbf i hardly post about it on the Bad Posts blog either but like still. can share it on ao3 though check out sleep by imjustheretoreadonefic (don't do that it's not good)) but you can ask about that (if you want, which you probably won't because it is not most people's thing lmao) on my sideblog, yourfourthparent!! BUTBUTBUT i do have some thoughts and headcanons and such that are at the very least decently presentable!!!!
starting off first: i think he's bi! i think he figured out he was bi when he was pretty young (probably somewhere in his teenage years, probably like 15 max) and when he was in his 20s he was very involved in the queer community (his 20s being. in the 80s. sorry.) and was like a big activist. that is until the curse.
the curse being him hitting his big break. stars in some film that wasn't supposed to really blow up but it like Fucking Smashed and suddenly he was like all those guys who do one role and then are suddenly in Everything. cuz he sure is in literally everything. once he starts blowing up ofc he's got folks to help manage his image and at some point they're like haha [lip bite] you gotta stop with that gay shit or straight audiences won't find you marketable. you're already native and folks can hardly handle that let alone you being an active queer activist. you gotta cut that shit out so you can be the next batman or whatever. and tristan's like Well at least i'll make money to support myself and my dying father!
newsflash his father dies of cancer before he gets a chance. tristan's doing his best to avoid thinking about his father's death so he moves out of oklahoma blah blah yk how it goes.
he has piper when he's 33 ! everything's set and he's settled and then piper comes along and like. he's alright. he can handle this. he can be a good father (he's white knuckling the bathroom sink while he says this)
yeah he's terrified of being a shitty father. he does his best to keep her away from the press and keep her Okay for the most part but in order to do that he doesn't get to see her much etc etc. you know. you've read hoo. bleh
when piper starts dating jason he's like Oh cool ! i am about to break down ! cuz like. hey man. he is so not prepared for the reality of The Passage of Time. wdym his daughter is 16. fym tristan's almost fifty. that's so fucked up how is this allowed.
anyways he and jason are like Besties (*shoving my Bad posts to the side*) like they're such good friends they hang out so often even after jason and piper break up they're just Hiding it then. like they have weekly chess meetings and they talk about books and their lives and jason concerns tristan So Much oh my god tristan is so scared for this poor boy What are those tattoos young man Who are these "wolves" that raised you What is this "legion" Are you in a gang Little private school boy are you in a gang. What do you mean your first language is latin.
ngl my obsession with tristan came from my obsession with jason. i made a post like ages ago about how silly it'd be if tristan was jason's gay awakening and i just kept. thinking about them hanging out. and it spiralled and now i'm insane about him sorry. jason will always be my number one but Oohhhhh tristan consumes me.
anyways live tristan reaction when he finds out jason's mom is beryl grace in the middle of showing jason and piper a million old movies (beryl is in one and jason sees her and immediately freezes and tristan's just talking through the movie (hes silly sorry he talks through the whole thing. piper actually likes it because she has a hard time following movies so tristan explaining everything is good but jason is vaguely annoyed by it. he loves tristan to death don't get him wrong it's just that he can't concentrate on the kovie with tristan spitting fun facts a million words a second) when he looks over to see if theyre still watching and he just sees piper fretting over jason who's looking at the screen with a thousand gard stare.
let's go misc things that i want to mention somewhere but don't really fit uhhhh
i have this idea where tristan used to be a drag queen. i don't have any of the details down not a single one but i think about him talking to piper and her friends about the old days when he was a queen. mentions something offhandedly about how he wants to wear more feminine clothing and someone's like "oh are you like. yk. a gamer" and he's like "oh nonono i'm not trans trust me i explored my gender plenty, wore makeup, padded my bra, did drag for a few years, changed my name—" and they're like "you did DRAG ???" and he's like "OH yeah LOLZ i was terrible lol. my team keeps trying to bury it from public view for a reason. those looks were NOT serving !!!!" (he doesn't talk like that but i'm being silly rn)
(you just knoooooow jason was jaw on the floor immediately looking up TRISTAN MCLEAN DRAG TRISTAN MCLEAN DRAG QUEEN PERSONA NAME TRISTAN MCLEAN DRAG QUEEN TRISTAN MCLEAN— the SECONDDDD he got a chance. like staring so hard at old ass pictures of tristan doing drag and realising like Oh maybe i am bi. piper dumped him because she found his search history /j)
i think when his father died he cut his hair but then when it started growing long again it reminded him too much of the past that he Didn’t Want To Think About so he just. kept it short. and it's been short ever since. BUTBUTBUT when piper decides she wants to reconnect with her culture (which she's been mostly separate from because of tristan's own avoidance of it due to memories of his childhood and his father and blahblahblah) it sort of motivates him to do it too. like if piper's gonna do it after tristan entirely cut her from their culture then like. he can too. and it was a big part of his life when he was younger so like. he knows shit. i'm not good at this btw sorry i just have ideas UGSFHADGSF but anyways when piper starts reconnecting he decides to do it too and his first step with like Getting Comfortable again is growing his hair out. it's a smaller step yk he just doesn't cut his hair it's nothing active. (ofc when it starts getting properly long he has a few moments. he has to really confront his grief over his father's death and just the fear of that alone is enough to make him want to cut it again. piper stops him before he does but he has a few moments where he questions if it's worth it)
ik i just said earlier that he's not trans but like sometimes. with characters. i have headcanons that complety contradict each other. that is to say Transfem tristan mclean headcanon. she changes her name to t. just T. t wynn mclean. she goes by t cuz it's something she's already used to (jason called her that all the time before she came out).
these are all the ones i have off the top of my head agh pleaseplease feel free to ask more about any of these !!! (or critique them lmao half of them are. things i suck at explaining because they exist only for hyperspecific scenarios wherein nothing happens but tristan talking to jason or piper LMAO) you can also send in your own headcanons about him or jason or piper because EYE WANT TO READ MORE ABOUT THEM RAAAAGHHH seriously there's so little stuff that features him especially and if you have literally anything at all i would lovelovelove to read it all !!!!!!! sorry for deleting the ask btw i really didn't mean to LMAO sorry to my honourary mutual (i'd tag you but i'm afraid of misremembering who it was LMAO sorry mate 💔💔)

what do you think it is about louis that elicits such emotional involvement from fans? i’ve rarely ever seen it with any other artists and I follow/stan many
i can only answer this from my own perspective, i’m sure that if you asked other fans they might have different answers… for me first and foremost it’s his art; and by that i mean primarily his lyrics - i feel a strong connection to them, and that makes me feel a connection to the artist they came from… they’re a source of comfort and self expression for me, so that sense of comfort and similarity i get from the lyrics and music automatically extends to the person who made them
but by art i also mean the art/design elements he chooses to connect with his music (merch/ graphic design/ music videos/ lyrics videos/ obvious inspiration materials etc) and his musical/artistic persona (his personal fashion sense, his fashion brand), his overall design aesthetic - its right up my alley and it’s something that i’ve identified with before i even found louis so his being similar to mine is just another layer of why i connect with him
another very important thing to me is his morals, or what i can gauge of his morals from how he conducts himself publicly (both professionally & as much as he chooses to share personally) - i’m a firm believer of NOT separating the art from the artist
one of the reasons i first started to look into louis outside of his music was because of the interactions i saw of him with his fans, these were always so warm and borderline friend group 🥹 and i personally had not seen an artist of his level who treated his fans the way that he does, so that’s something that pulled me in too
and realistically speaking, it’s also the fact that once you become a fan and start to look into “all the content” from his past, you find SO MUCH! so much going back to SO many years, and it gives you this sense of “knowing him” because you see what he was like over so many years, you feel like he’s someone you’ve known for a while… that’s something that you normally don’t get with a lot of other artists because they haven’t in fact been in the public eye for THAT long and their every move hasn’t been documented to the nth (and frankly sometimes unhealthy) degree of detail
stemming from that previous point, it’s also the different layers of fandom content involvement available when it comes to louis - not every artist has active update accounts that report on their literal every move, fashion UAs that document the details of their every outfit, fans who actively gif their public appearances/ music videos/ concert livestreams etc, fans who create art & artistic edits of other types related to the artist, there’s A LOT to consume basically, and doing it amongst a group/community just makes it that much more fun & addictive
and last but definitely not least is the fact that he’s pretty as fuck (like disturbingly), with the most perfect ass known to mankind 🤤 anyone pretending that his looks don’t play a role in why he elicits this level of obsession from fans is lying to themselves and you
any way, i don’t know if this is the kind of response you were looking for but that’s my analysis of it… i honestly could go on and say more on the topic but i think i’ll shut up now

how do you think The Overlook Hotel represents Jack's abusive tendencies and the breakdown of the family?
[sshaking violently] Hello. I'm So Glad You Asked.
alright this is going to focus on the 1980 movie, not the book because i haven't read it, and disregarding Doctor Sleep because i'm not super interested in the story being told there (don't like the lore with the shine)
from the beginning of the movie, there's this sorta-subtle theme of cannibalism. you find out when Jack & Wendy are touring the hotel that it was built on the land of Natives, and it specially mentioned that this tribe regularly practiced cannibalism. the design of the Hotel itself reflects this--you've got things like the infamous hedge maze, the endless hallways, even down to the patterns on the carpet, which are all winding, twisting tubes. the maze-like structures heavily resemble intestines or inner organs: the Hotel is consuming the Torrance family.
you get this with the camerawork too. The Shining is famous for its reoccurring tight tracking shots that follow the characters closely as they make their way through the halls (digestive tract) of the Hotel. these shots take the large, empty space of the Hotel and shrink it down into one claustrophobic region. the longer the family stays in the Hotel, the more they are digested, and the more they degrade—Jack’s declining mental state, Danny getting completely taken over by “Tony,” Wendy eventually being able to see the ghosts, etc.
Jack is consumed by the Hotel. he doesn’t want to leave, and he tries to stop his family from leaving. he wants them to stay with him, forever (becoming a part of him/the Hotel)—cannibalism.
EDIT: I FORGOT ABOUT THE DONNER PARTY. at the beginning of the movie the Hotel is explicitly stated to be near the place where the Donner Party happened. if you don’t know, the Donner Party was a caravan to oregon in the 1840s that got trapped in the snow, forcing several party members to resort to cannibalism. it’s one of the most famous examples of cannibalism in America and the Overlook Hotel is DIRECTLY compared to it
this is all a direct perversion of the literary trope of communion. communion involves sharing food/a meal of some sort, and typically represents the sharing of intimacy or forming a connection. think about the idea of a family sitting down to share a meal together—it’s about love, community, etc. The Shining takes consumption to the extreme; from communion to cannibalism, which reflects how Jack’s alcoholism and abuse (dislocating Danny’s arm pre-movie, treating Wendy like shit, etc) is tearing apart the traditional family model. he’s metaphorically acting as a cannibal on his family—eating the life out of them emotionally, which then becomes literally when he tries to kill them.
if i remember correctly, Jack is the only character in the film that we actually see eat something. at one point Wendy makes him eggs (which are typically a symbol for rebirth, just interesting to note) and he eats those and that’s about it, besides the scenes at the bar but again that’s Jack consuming something. Jack consumes the food his wife made for him -> Jack is consuming his wife (straight up exactly what occurs in an abusive relationship!!!) at the same time, the Hotel is consuming Jack. The Overlook is a perversion of a home in the same way that Jack is perverting the Torrance family.
Jack spends most of his time in the main lobby of the Hotel and forbids his family from entering it while he is working, even though it’s the main fucking room that literally everything else connects to. in the same way, he’s taking up as much space as he can in the family—everything is about him, centered around what he wants without consideration of his wife or son (he did not ask them if they wanted to move to the Overlook in the first place!!!). pretty obviously analog to abuse here, since abusers oftentimes are kinda like black holes. or empty stomachs [wink]
he leaves Wendy to do all the work maintaining the Hotel, despite the fact that HE signed up for it. she is the only one doing upkeep on the Overlook, and she is the only one putting any effort into her & Jack’s relationship. as time goes on their relationship gets worse, Wendy is shunted with more and more of the responsibility while Jack does nothing except berate her. he falls into unstable sleeping habits (staying up late, sleeping in past noon)—which is an effect of the Hotel but it also VERY common with alcoholics (which. Jack is). a lot of the Hotel’s effects on him are comparable to worsening alcohol abuse, and it’s very intentional that Jack makes a switch over to being fully under the control of the Overlook after he gets a drink from the bar. likeeee
also at one point Jack snaps and starts trying to kill Wendy (“Wendy…darling ….LIGHT of my LIFE” lmaoo) and she fights back. she manages to knock him out and drag him to the freezer. he starts begging her to let him out and she doesn’t, but she DOES let her guard down and go upstairs to sleep. which of course is then when Jack gets out and tries to kill her & Danny. this is comparable to letting your guard down in an abusive relationship—you think you’re safe, that he won’t do it again, that he really means it this time, and then bam. shit escalates again
Wendy is also unable to escape the Hotel (her relationship with Jack). he destroys the snowcat and the radio in order to trap her, analogous to how she is unable to leave him (either physical unable or emotionally dependent on him, bc that’s abusive relationships work). eventually she takes the kid (Danny) and runs, which. i think it’s pretty obvious where that metaphor is going. the Hotel is extremely isolated, isolating being probably the biggest theme in the film? and it can be seen as a representation of the isolation you feel when you’re stuck in an abusive family. cut off from anyone else, trapped with someone who is slowly eating you alive—inside a relationship that is actively hostile to you (the Overlook Hotel)!!!!
The Hotel reflects degradation. the ghosts get more intense the longer they’re trapped there—the relationship is getting worse. Danny starts to dissociate through Tony (common coping mechanism for kids living in abusive households) and that’s what keeps him alive. when things really go to hell, Wendy starts seeing the ghosts (the cracks in the family that she’s been trying to deny/ignore). communion is decaying into consumption. i’m really fucking normal about this movie

Honestly the whole “fetishization of lesbians” thing is so weird to me as a queer woman because like. The majority of men I’ve met in yuri-heavy fandoms or that have liked wlw content have been chill and respectful. There are some bad eggs but it’s a significantly less common problem in my experience than tumblr presents it as, and imo as long as someone respects irl wlw they can like the fictional content however much they want. Like, why the hell would I be mad that a dude thinks two girls kissing is cute? So do I, that’s just having good taste! Especially if they make art or fanfic or headcanons or anything, that is literally beneficial to me that they are making more content of what I want to see! If I was one of those people so worried that any man who likes wlw content is fetishizing or whatever, I’d miss out on being friends with a lot of cool people. RIP to them but I’m gonna have fun and focus on connecting with others and seeing the good it has to offer instead of focusing on the differences and getting mad over an issue blown up past its actual size, but I guess part of what it might be is people want a shortcut to judge whether everybody is good and bad instead of either actually either giving them a chance as an individual or recognizing that they don’t have enough info to judge. Maybe people should realize it isn’t their place to judge everyone in the world; even if it seems like what will keep them safest or be the most moral thing to do for some people, it isn’t right.
Couldn't have said it better myself! I also think the key thing with fetishization is that, at least as I understand it, the dudes who are really gross about lesbians aren't going to go out of their way to get involved in a wlw fandom and consume fan content made by actual wlw. If they really were just there for the porn why go through the trouble of getting like... invested in the community and all that? At that point it feels like if they went through the trouble to seek out sapphic content made by and for sapphics then perhaps you should give them the benefit of the doubt. Not that they can't be weird and gross about it but I feel like the odds are VERY different from the general population.

Are you aware that I'm-a-gay-fish and Zu ship dr//m/are ?/genq
okay so it took me a while to answer this but i finally found the words to so here goes; yeah i do know, and i totally understand if you don't ship it, neither do i, but there's nothing i can do about it?
they're allowed, so long as they don't harm people, to do whatever they want on their own platforms. and before you ask me if i support *ncest, would you actually ask someone if they support toxic relationships and murder whenever they ship two unhealthy killers with mental problems? because that's funnily enough what most people do around here! you can say it's not the same, and that they're romanticizing it, but i can personally detach myself from fiction enough to realize that while this concept depicted in their art shouldn't be recreated in real life, that doesn't mean they actually engage or support people that do that irl- they asked zu the same question so many times, and frog doesn't either and i've known gayfish for three years! you're well within your right to stop associating with them or distance yourself from their content but i myself won't.
i know fiction affects reality to a degree, don't twist my words please, but if you're too young to consume that kind of content with a nuanced perspective or is triggered/affected by it then as long as they tag their content properly then you can unfollow, block and move on. i have a habit of following and reblogging people's works before looking at their bios and before i know it find myself having to choose between two sides i don't belong to and i frankly don't want to! anti this or proship that- in this online era you have to adapt by keeping your cool and curating your own online experience and viewing people in black and whites is stressful, painful and dangerous for everyone involved. i don't even reblog the content you probably have a problem with, and i'm honestly still scared of the response i'll get-
i will not blame or hate whoever unfollows or blocks me for this, it's to be expected, but please don't think about it like some bad vs good guys dilemma? sometimes thought provoking morally grey ambiguous stories with messed up characters spark more positive discussion and healing than people looking into it because they suffer from the same delusions and want a justification-
like realistically, in my blog, most ppl here are basically shipping two literal skeletons with magic in their bones who are sometimes almost the exact copy of one another, and who theoretically have a very similar dna, and sometimes they make shipkids, which, if you know anything about *ncest, is one of the main reasons why you shouldn't bang your siblings - mostly from a moral standpoint because that's so gross i can't even think of it, but also because any offspring would suffer greatly from physical and mental diseases hidden in their genetic code- like. you could argue it's not the same but it's sancest for a reason. and even when they're widely different sanses, you wouldn't think fell x sans is wrong (at least in this specific community) but really we've all just gotten numb to how weird that sounds. trust me, there's a reason we don't talk about our ships to outsiders HHH
TL,DR: so while i greatly encourage you to block people and content you don't want to see/associate with, including me! i hope i made it clear why i, personally, don't care about dreammare and whoever ships it.

Every so often I’ll try to peek into fandoms for other video games/shows/movies and see if they’re worth joining and….ugh.
I’m not gonna lie. It just makes me feel so lucky to be apart of the Soulsborne fandom in general. I have been here for years now and I have never felt the stress or strain of classic fandom toxicity the way I do when I spend only a day or two trying to rummage through other fandoms. Negative fan behavior and strife has literally kept me out of so many other online communities. I rarely feel secure anywhere else.
But Soulsborne? Sure, we have the stuck-up git gud crowd that doesn’t understand what git gud really means, we have bitter casuals that spam the most overpowered weapons until those weapons get nerfed and then they start screaming, we have some occasional lore disagreements that usually involve something to do with old men and their dolls, we sometimes have sibling-style fights over the second Dark Souls game that lead to some pretty intense verbal exchanges, though the second a FromSoftware hater gets involved, everyone teams up and roasts them for daring to diss any Dark Souls game because how dare you.
But that’s about it. Ship wars are almost nonexistent/extremely tamed, there aren’t fandom morality teams, there aren’t flocks of raging teens attacking voice actors or writers, there aren’t internet-viral horror stories about the utter madness of gatekeeping revolutions or bullying campaigns, etc..
It’s just chill and full of good memes and people that would be considered clinically insane if they ever casually said the things they say when discussing lore intricacies. No girl, you can’t explain to your neighbor why you believe that consuming three umbilical cords, killing the moon, and ascending to squidhood is the best possible option to choose when trapped in a world enslaved to The Cycle, but you absolutely can say that here! Let’s talk about it!!
Hell, we even have dozens of stories and anecdotes about how Dark Souls helped people through depression and anxiety. I mean, Solaire exists. Japanese artists draw some of the cutest chibi art of him and other wholesome characters as though we were in a fandom for kids. Or rather, how kid fandoms were meant to be. Ha.
Oh and, speaking of artists? The content creators in this fandom? You guys are literally some of the most talented people I’ve ever seen. The streamers, the artists, the writers, the lore freaks, the data-miners, the musicians, the comedy crowd, the illustrators, the comic/zine creators, the meme lords? This community thrives on these people. We are drowning in content every day thanks to them!
I just love it here. It’s like my Firelink Shrine. A safe little haven full of weird people that are actually my friends. I’ve gotten through some of the heaviest points in my life thus far with undeniable encouragement from these damn games and the community built around them. This is what fandoms were meant to be, my friends.

there is a Lucemond actor/celeb au fic thread on Twitter that is just so. It is so. It has my eyeballs vibrating, my blood singing, my life returned me, etc. etc.
I could go on and on about how entertaining it is and how it genuinely creates this very engaging narrative with accurate media-based worldbuilding on the premise that Lucerys, being a successful actor with an industry rivalry involving Aemond—also a successful actor—both of whom have rabid and enthusiastic fanbases, catches wind of fans shipping the two of them and accidentally becomes obsessed with the ship. We understand an unfolding of events through his private Twitter, text interactions, Instagram stories, and even media headlines. Lucerys schemes to give “content” to his newfound shopping community by literally manifesting it—out of the blue asking Aemond to dinner, insisting they take public photos together, watching ship edits of them in public—and being so embarrassing in the process. The way the involved characters react to Lucerys’ antics are so funny but surprisingly grounded because that’s how I would also react to it, like “Lucerys. You fucking idiot”. And he is. He is an idiot and he’s amazing. He’s a Lucemond truther. Duh. Aemond is also properly depicted as a pathetic loser, AS HE SHOULD BE. No amount of money, skill, fame, or notoriety can nullify the fact that he’s down bad and anxious and also an idiot. I am convinced that Loser, Psychotically Fixated Aemond is the superior depiction of the character and most loyal to the source material.
It’s all very well done and genuinely hilarious and I am OBSESSED WITH IT. OBSSESSED. I could talk about it for AGES I WANT TO PICK IT APART AND EXPERIMENT W IT AND CONSUME IT AND HAVE IT LIVE IN ME FOREVER HNJGJSHSJF
Ahem anyway, briefly the thread showed up as limited viewing and when I realized I couldn’t see the posts I literally sat there at my kitchen table in shock and my eyes welled up w unshed tears bro. It was 4am. It definitely could’ve been an error on my own end or just brief but it drove me insane. Anyway so I made a Twitter account to get access to it idc that it pushed me over the edge to actually make a Twitter account I don’t care I literally don’t care I don’t—

Your post reminds me of the early 2000s when people were speculating on which Disney Channel and Nickelodeon actors were actually together IRL (which is weird enough to speculate on the romantic lives of children) and how crazy the tabloids were in general back then when it came to actors personal/romantic lives.
I think people in Western culture tend to downplay the prevalence of that behavior nowadays because it’s not as front and center as it used to be but it does still happen and a lot of the time it’s still used by studios to promote their shows. Definitely not a phenomenon unique to Asia.
Omg you just made me remember the Lindsey Lohan, Hilary Duff, Aaron Carter 'love' triangle that existed back then lmaoooo what a time
I do think western fans, particularly ones in BL/GL fandoms, are so hyper focused on those fandoms/sub-fandoms they either don't pay attention to what's happening outside of those fandoms or don't know general media history. I don't blame~~ ppl for this fandom is ultimately a hobbyist space first and foremost, but I do think it can lead to damaging assumptions about non-American/British cultures and a prevalent belief that these types of occurrences only happen in BL/GL fandoms which can - and has in my observations - lead to some xenophobic beliefs about East Asian cultures in general.
This is a bigger problem in general of xenophobia when it comes to consuming and/or engaging with non-white/non-american media like this belief that Korean media isn't horny in general isn't just something I see BL fans saying but also ppl who watch romance kdramas b/c that's their main focus, romance kdramas not Korean media in general. Which is vast and varied, and exists beyond Crash Landing Into You, Guardian, Squid Game and Parasite
(sidenote, everyone knows Bong Joon-ho for Parasite but his filmography is varied and amazing, The Host is such a clever subversive of a B monster movie and Snowpiercer is probably one of my fave films of all time and Chris Evans best on screen performance to date)
Like, I see folks saying "shipping" a lot when it comes to fans believing idk Mew and Gulf were irl dating when in my fandom experience that shit was called "tin hatting" b/c it was a conspiracy. There was a fine line difference between ppl who like just enjoyed and liked Dom and Elijah's friendship and wrote silly (even if it was sexy) fanfic about them and the ppl who literally stalked Elijah to a gay bar once b/c they legitimately believed Dom and Elijah were in a secret romance. Like way to much fandom shit, Jared and Jensen also popularized tin hatting or rather their fandom did. J2 crawled so Larries could fucking RUN. Back in the days of LiveJournal there were anon communities that had threads with 1000s of comments about how Jared and Jensen were secretly in a relationship b/c omg look at the way they act at cons! They're so touch-feely! They make innuendo jokes!
We'd call this "fan service" with a Thai acting pair and I would argue that's what Jared and Jensen were doing, fan service just in the early 00s. Idk if they still do this at cons I don't follow SPN anymore but you saw the same comments about like the 1D members. In my experience I would argue western tin hatters of western celebs are worse than what I see from BL fans even with the "fan service" or whatever b/c there's a sense of heightened conspiracy think involved. And again, it's not just for same-sex couples the actors for Outlander have been harassed by tinhats for almost as long as the show has been on (so like 8-ish years). At the height of the popularity for Scandal tin hats were saying Kerry Washington's baby was gonna come out light skinned "proving" it was her white costars (for those who don't know Kerry is a Black woman and her husband is a Black man, her former costar is a white man).
idk where I was going with all this but like, this isn't something specific to Thailand or Korea etc it's not even something specific to same sex pairings. I would argue Thailand's just learned how to monetize off people's already pre-existing lack of boundaries towards public figures.

What would you say it’s the biggest misconception about French revolution?
I could answer a thousand different ways about politics and the historical side but, honestly? I'm going to be open and answer this very honestly and touch on something I haven't seen anyone talk about.
One of the biggest and maybe most controversial misconceptions I've seen is the way people view those involved in it. Like, the mental image people build up in their mind of the biggest players- and I mean this literally, for many figures. Robespierre, Danton, Marat, Saint-Just, Desmoulins etc.
We have portraits and engravings and descriptions etc, but of course everyone builds up their own version of these people in their head. What do you see when you picture Danton in front of the people? Robespierre at the stand? What do you envision when you read about them? Is it your favorite actor portrayal? The way your favorite fanartist draws them? Or is it picked directly from the idealized portraits?
I'm incredibly autistic and while my writing and art and sewing can being fantastical things about my thinking processes are very literal. I devour as many primary sources as I can- things written by historians are well and good and they can help you find translated or obscure stuff, but they have biases. I like to form my own, based on a person's own words- and with a dead person, their letters and writings are all you have. In terms of the French Revolution thankfully however, there is a wealth of this available and many lovely translators at work. So I build my idea up personality first, descriptions by others second. I don't know how others go about this, but it seems the idea they build up is as clear as the one I build for myself.
But you will see something strange. People going about something that actually happened as if it is fiction, consuming history as if it is media. Which isn't bad, but it is strange to see people fighting over history as if it is a fandom war, hurting others over an ideal they have built up. And this goes for the Revolution in its entirety, on both sides. When someone has a strong idea in mind, and you give them a primary source to be helpful, one is surprised to find themselves on the lit end of a match.
People's ideas of someone tend to me more important to them than what actually is, even if the real thing is... pleasant? Different from what they want, yes, but not always bad. And sometimes I sit back and wonder how much of that is just human nature, clinging to our perceptions and biases, and how much of that influenced things back then. It gets me on a bit of a philosophical rabbit hole, I'll admit- the twisting and exploitation of public opinion is something that is very key in something like this. And its interesting to see that trend still continuing now, and rather than be upset, sometimes I wonder what brought a person to the conclusions they hold so tightly to. I'm being honest here, because while I have been the subject of very nasty attentions for asking the same kind of questions as above, and while I have been made to prefer to indulge in this subject privately now instead of engage in the community, I'm not really upset anymore.
Just extremely curious about the way other people think and comprehend things.

Some thoughts about Rollo
not really an analysis per se. sorry if this lacks structure, this is just a summary of me rambling about rollo on discord
warnings: mention of alcoholism, glorious masquerade spoilers
dark content creators & consumers do not interact
I feel like Rollo is never truly going to get over his hatred for magic. If he heals he'd probably be like "okay you do you" at most but he likely spent +10 years holding so much anger and rage at mages and magic itself in his heart, I don't think he'll ever truly get rid of it. It's kinda like when your deadbeat dad is an alcoholic and kicks the bucket and for the rest of your life you're never truly comfortable around people drinking or get like, annoyed at it, and the best you can do for yourself is find some friends who don't drink or talk about drinking all the time and engage in some activities you like where alcohol isn't involved.
Healing for Rollo might involve a future of basically living magicless in a predominantly magicless community despite being a mage. And somehow trying to go his own way and making the best of it.
Even though the death of his brother is the source of his hatred and rage, the literal years he spent with those feelings while constantly in the presence of mages and seeing magic treated like this amazing enriching thing while he feels completely differently about it but tried to blend in all these years....I feel like that made it so much worse than it was originally. Even before he started blaming magic for the death of his brother, magic was probably something he associated with the incident for a long time but could never take a break from. Like when you have a trigger but you're continuously exposed to it. And that just fueled an amount of rage that hurts Rollo first and foremost before it does anyone else. If you've ever been consistently furious about something internally for months on end, you'll know that this becomes really exhausting really quickly.
So yeah, Rollo needs some distance from magic as a whole to heal and ground himself imo
He probably thinks his hatred for magic is less obvious than it actually is. People likely know he's not the biggest magic enthusiast but he definitely mellowed it down from how bad it actually is.
Also there's the fact that people knowing his true thoughts would likely make him unpopular. If people knew how he felt a lot of them probably wouldn't like him or want to be around him. But he can't help the way he feels. I like the idea of a younger Rollo at some point trying to get rid of those feelings and failing miserably.
I've seen a lot of people say Rollo talks the way he does to Yuu because he wants to recruit them to his side but that's not what I read into this. I see a dude who is trying to hide his true thoughts from everyone around him all day every day despite how he's suffering on the inside; that he is so desperate for someone to understand him and for a place where he can be his true unadulterated self, that he's making an attempt to latch onto the first person who could possibly feel the same way he does
I'm seeing a lot of frustration from Rollo. The "if this thing didn't exist, I literally would have 0 of the problems that I do" kind.
His magic isn't just ironic because his unique magic is the very magic that killed his brother, it's also a metaphor for his own anger burning him alive from the inside out
The relationships he has with the vice prez and aide for example are built on a lie and that's precisely why the fate he got at the end of the event is such a punishment for him. Because he has to keep living with that lie or be truthful but left alone. Regardless of what choice he makes, he's going to feel alone. Being alone with his experiences and way of viewing the world or being alone, literally; those are the choices he has now.
I really like what Twst did with Rollo's character because his backstory and personality makes him feel less of a radical advocate for an existing belief system but rather someone whose hatred and anger are so incredibly personal and something he mainly deals with on the inside and then acts on it on the outside. It's less of "this is Rollo he is this and that and believes this and that take of a radical splinter group" and more "this is Rollo and his experience and feelings are so radically different from everyone around him and he's silently suffering on the inside until he fucking snaps". Because as humans we love to assign labels to people based on the thoughts and feelings they voice but Rollo as a character is more complex than that and that's what sets him apart from og Frollo for me. I like that direction they took with his characterization.

Let's Talk Whump No. 10
Welcome to Let’s Talk Whump, a series of interviews that spotlight the amazing people in our whump community. I’m Malice and I’ll be your host.
Today we have @suspicious-pools-of-blood joining us to share his whump story!
Tell us a fact or two about yourself!
I'm a butch (he/him) and I enjoy rock climbing, leatherworking, and losing my entire goddamn mind over Xena: Warrior Princess.
What does whump mean to you?
To me it can range anywhere from a trope to a vibe involving some kind of hurt. I definitely consider angst to be whump.
How did you find the whump community?
It was actually very straightforward; I was up one night and the word "whump" kept rattling around my brain, I'd probably seen it tagging a fanfic at some point, but I didn't know what it meant, so I looked it up and found a definition followed by the Tumblr community. Specifically, it was albino-whumpee's writing that came up, so I was introduced to whump and box boys and WRU all at once. I stayed up all night reading their stuff and then made a sideblog and dove in, dragging my OCs down with me.
Do you think your views on whump has changed? Maybe the way you consume whump media?
This community was basically my first foray into reading original fiction online instead of just fanfic, and now that's definitely what I read most.
Favourite whump trope?
One of my favorite tropes is carewhumpers--not of the bad caretaker variety, but more whumpers who don't let whumpee have any caretaker but whumper themself. Relatedly, I like captor bonding (not sure if that's an actual term, but that's what I call it because the term Stockholm syndrome has a super gross history), as well as intimate whumpers, nsfwhump/noncon/dubcon, slavery, power imbalances, etc. Also a big fan of a whumpee who internalizes their hurt hard enough to become a whumper against a new whumpee, continuing the cycle of violence and abuse rather than the typical whumped-turned-whumper trope where the two characters just switch roles. I really like the mental/emotional side of whump, seeing how both whumper and whumpee feel about what's happening, why whumper does what they do, and how the whump changes both of them as people.
And your favourite piece you've written?
Really hard to pick, but currently I'll have to go with Not You Too and its companion piece Wish . It's more angst than any physical whump, but it's an important piece for developing and understanding the psyche of my main character.
What's your writing style like?
Oh man, calling myself out here on this one. Don't be like me, kids. Often times I find that not being sober helps me get over mental blocks that prevent me from getting the words onto the page. It depends on what I'm writing, but usually a couple bourbon old fashioneds or an edible get me into the mood to write, night time, lights off, candle lit on my desk, relevant OC or WIP playlist playing. I'm trying to get better about that though because needing to be intoxicated to write is not good. I try to write regularly but usually I just end up sitting in front of my Notion board for hours on end while procrastinating on work I should be doing.
Is there anything you struggle with writing?
Cisheterosexuality is fuckin impossible for me to write.  I have no experience with it so I'm profoundly confused when I have to write about it for plot reasons
Is there anything you're working on at the moment?
The current piece I'm working on is my main character's first time sleeping with another woman. I am, if nothing else, committed to realism in writing, so I did spend more time than I wanted to today remembering my own first time and cringing but hey, at least I got the vibe!
Do you have any writing advice?
Make some lil guys and rotate them in your mind; literally no one can stop you
Shout out time!
@winedark-whumpk-whump has some truly fantastic stories and was really encouraging when I was struggling with engagement and feeling self-conscious about my original content.
Anything you'd like to add?
Thank you so much for this interview, this was lots of fun!
Thank you for joining us, @suspicious-pools-of-bloodod ! It was great to have you here!
And to all you folks at home, have a whump-derful day!

To the DDoS Attackers of AO3
I’m going to try and force my thoughts into some semblance of order regarding the recent DDoS attack against AO3; which is extremely hard to do considering I am so angry that I can barely think straight.
I may not know exactly who was behind this… I may not even know the true motivations or goals of the individuals behind this attack… But the one thing I do know is this…
Whoever you are... You deserve to experience suffering on a level that equates to all the grief you’ve caused others through your selfish actions.
Now, I know that wishing pain upon others isn’t taking the high road, but I’m simply incapable of it with everything currently going on in the world. These people are denying access to a service that many people, quite frankly, need.
AO3 is not defined just by it’s content.
It’s a place to escape reality; a coping mechanism. It’s something that improves quality of life. This is especially important for those who experience mental health issues and struggle with conditions like depression, anxiety, and more. For some, it’s the only way to find comfort after a long, hard day at work. For others, it’s literally an aid to help them fall asleep.
It’s a creative outlet. Suffice to say, exercising your brain is vital to good mental well-being. In addition, writing can also allow people to express their emotions, process grief or trauma, and gain clarity on issues going on in their own life. It’s cathartic. It’s happiness. It’s art.
It’s a place to make friends and embrace communal positivity and support. Whilst it may not be one of the most common places to make friends, it does happen. And for those who met elsewhere, it’s still a place to bond and share gifts. More than that, it’s the place associated with that rewarding feeling that you get when you either give or receive kudos’, comments and bookmarks on works. All that stands between smiling all day is one flattering comment.
And that’s me just getting started… AO3 is so many things, but because I’m trying not to write an autobiography right now, I’m trying to keep this rant to a minimum. Besides, I want to save my energy for the next work I end up writing.
I don’t care if AO3 contains content that could be considered heinous, repulsive or downright twisted to the point that some may need therapy after reading it. The point is, if it’s not hurting anybody, or impeding upon anybody’s rights as a human being, then it should be allowed. This of course comes with the caveat that a tagging system must be enforced to correctly identify potential triggers to readers (which AO3 offers). The only way this system fails is if writers accidentally or intentionally mislead readers by incorrectly tagging their work (which is rare - and there are also ways to rectify this including communication with the content owner or submitting a report to AO3).
Above all else, adults are more than capable of navigating the site and consuming whatever content interests them. They’re also capable of evaluating the risks involved with specific works that may be an issue for them. For any readers under the age of eighteen, parents or caregivers should be held responsible for deciding whether to manage content consumption or to disallow access altogether. It’s the same concept as choosing whether or not to see a film based on its rating or locking the adult channels on a television.
I understand that the issue here isn’t the tagging system; it’s the content itself. But the attackers’ efforts to stop freedom of speech are futile and pointless. If the AO3 fanbase aren’t reading or sharing content on AO3, we’ll do it elsewhere.
So again… Turning my attention to those who are responsible for this attack… I know I’m probably wasting my breath here but…
Get a life and go do something that’s actually meaningful with it.

what the actual fuck i'm so fucking mad you got that message in your inbox, you're like the most loving most positive person here always enjoying your interests in such a nice way like that personally angered me you don't deserve that at all. that was written only to piss you off please don't let them, your love for vice versa and jimmysea is honestly the cutest most endearing thing and it makes me genuinely happy seeing you talk about it so excitedly every day. their episodes were soooo good imho so cute so them! i've missed them a lot and i'll be rewatching FOR SURE! what were your fave 3 moments? if you can choose! fuck that anon and the other ones that might be the same person. love you monica keep loving them as hard as you do <3
ANON YOU'RE MAKING ME TEAR UP THIS IS SO SWEET 😭😭 idk if i deserve all these nice words but please know that i deeply appreciate them and that they mean a lot to me!!!! thank you so so much for this 🥺💜
honestly i LOVED the our skyy episodes like i know im terribly biased, but out of all the ones we got until now i think the plot for vice versa felt the most organic and coherent to the characters and their journey. once again everyone involved in the show put so much care and attention into it, and jimmysea have such a natural easy chemistry to them, they sell the lovesick fools who have been married for five years SO WELL. IDK IF I CAN PICK ONLY 3 FAVORITE MOMENTS BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL SO GOOD BUT LET ME TRY:
1) the beach scene. IRREVOCABLY CHANGED ME MY LIFE MY PERSPECTIVE THE FOUNDATION OF MY PERSONHOOD THE BIOCHEMISTRY OF MY BRAIN AND THE ENTIRE MAKE UP OF MY BEING ON AN INTRINSIC MOLECULAR LEVEL. AGAIN. i haven't even begun to process A QUARTER of the insane amount of parallels they managed to pack in just 3 minutes of screentime and how, by doing that, they were able to show just how far puentalay have come in their journey: from strangers to lovers, from a one sided drunk kiss to a passionate yet tender mutual kiss, from a mouthed 'i like your name' to a mouthed 'i love you', from talay's life ending in the ocean to the ocean being the witness of his love, that same love he once thought was just an annoying distraction in the way to achieve his dreams and that now has become an essential color in the palette of his life..... literally made me experience every single emotion present on the spectrum of human consciousness, im gonna need a 2 weeks long vacation in a controlled environment to decompress and recover from the sheer high romance and the whole entire everything of it all
Tumblr media
also not to toot my own horn but i love being correct and never losing:
Tumblr media
2) both the birthday conversation and the drawing one. SORRY I KNOW IM CHEATING BUT I JUST CAN'T CHOOSE BETWEEN THESE TWO MOMENTS. WHEN I SAY PUENTALAY INVENTED COMMUNICATION UNDERSTANDING CARE LOVE SUPPORT!!!!!!!! im not mentally stable enough to be coherent about this but like.. one of the reasons i adore puentalay is that since the beginning they have always been willing to try to understand each other. no relationship comes without misunderstandings or conflicts, they're always bound to happen from time to time because we're all different and we all react to things in different ways, but what matters the most is the way you can come together after that to face the issue and make it better. i feel like people often have this idealized vision of love where everything must be perfect and passionate and all-consuming, but i believe love is actively choosing to share your life with someone every day as you help each other navigate through it and enjoy the quiet moments together, and i think these two conversations show that puen and talay have this kind of love, a love that will last forever because whatever happens being together is the most important thing for them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3) puentalay and jigsaw sleeping in the same bed. LITERALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO TELL YOU EXCEPT THAT I PERSONALLY DON'T EVEN WANT KIDS BUT SEEING PUEN AND TALAY BEING SO TENDER WITH JIGSAW AND REARRANGING THEIR LIFE TO MAKE SPACE FOR HIM HAD ME LYING IN THE DIRT SOBBING FOR SEVERAL HOURS TO CLIMB DOWN FROM THE SUGAR HIGH THIS SCENE GAVE ME WITH ITS SWEETNESS. it also reminded me a little of the scene in episode 6 when talay admits everything he has missed about puen: talay has always been more rational and reserved with his emotions compared to puen, but it's in quiet moments like these that you can see how deeply his feelings actually run. both puen and talay have so much love to give and one day, when they will be ready, they're gonna have a kid of their own and expand their family, and this knowledge is gonna MAKE ME DIE HAPPY AND IN PEACE

ROAST THEM! please, i am begging
I didn’t mean to ignore this, i just got sorta busy and now idk where to start anymore but i still wanna roast them so here we go.
Big rant incoming. I warned you.
I just found it so disrespectful that they were practically mocking racing in a room of people of literally give and have given so much to it, let alone everything that juan manuel correa went through. That alone should be enough to indefinitely shut them up and show them how much racing can mean to the drivers.
The comment asking for a gift absolutely made my skin CRAWL. Just unnecessary and weird and entitled. If they meant it as a joke, they have shit humor.
I don’t watch f2. I’ve watched like three f2 races in my whole life and i still know more than half the drivers. You have to consume absolutely zero motor-racing related media to not know them. Be for real, some of them are f1 reserve drivers.
The part where they said they didn’t know who juan manuel was? How? Just how? I’ll take it into consideration that maybe they don’t know his own story, cause that’ll take research beyond their mental capabilities to do. They hear about a racing driver that passed away racing, do they not feel ANY compassion? Or curiosity to understand why that happened? Who was involved? How they were affected? Beyond me.
Minor things and errors and penalties happen sometimes and i go google regulations and mechanics and aerodynamics to understand what happened and why. Come on, bffr.
This is the part that literally enraged me. They literally said they see f1 as an opportunity to be famous without having a real interest in it. They literally said the races are always boring and they took up f1 as the topic to do a podcast on because football had already reached its peak when they started and f1 is just on the way to reach its peak popularity.
For once, i found that people who say DTS did more damage than good have a point, and it wasn’t girls who fan girl over drivers who caused the world to realize that. It was grown ass men who are there for the drama and would rather watch DTS than the actual season (they said that fr). Don’t get me wrong, that wouldn’t be too bad in case of someone who watched DTS for entertainment, without disrespecting anyone, in case of people who haven’t unrightfully earned such a big platform in f1 just by being white cis men who pretended to know a lot about the sport.
Lastly, according to what they said previously, i’ve been watching f1 for about the same time as them and it blows my mind that i, someone who doesn’t have a platform in this sport, know wayyy more than them. Nico Rosberg was champion in 2013?! I could take not knowing what years seb won his championships, but keeping up with the memes part of this community is more than enough to know Rosberg won in 2016. I had to do 0 research to find that out! The jokes about it are enough.
When people called them out last year, will buxton defended them. Now maybe people can realize how idiotic it is to give such people a platform.
I just think people who don’t actually love and enjoy the sport and aren’t even passionate enough about it to understand its basics should not be such known figures in it.

I'm thinking aloud here, but I think the shift that occurred in fandom spaces around a decade ago was the move away from canon as scripture and more of a suggestion. Like, this is the base story that we're working with and the fandom builds on top of that; for some people, it actually improves the original story by elaborating on what, whether by convention or form, could not be fully communicated in canon.
People in fandom get frustrated when there aren't highly specific and niche scenes or subplots between characters, but they're forgetting that the story they're consuming doesn't exist in a fandom space: it exists in a space where there is a narrative structure and beats that need to be hit. To you, this character is the main character. But in canon, they're a supporting role - they can't have the attention given to them as if they were a main character, because that would bloat the whole story and nothing would ever happen.
But the issue in taking canon as a suggestion means that whatever is created within that problem-solving process results in a space where fans think they own the source material, because they have put so much effort into 'improving it'. There's also the issue of character ownership, where fans feel that they 'understand' the character better than the person that created them. In reality, the fan has over-identified with a fictional character and distorted them through the lens of fandom to create something different - and something unrelated to canon. This isn't a bad thing, exactly. It's just important to reflect on that process and recognise your role in it.
When this is taken too far, it results in fandoms essentially ruining the story for themselves and everyone else, because they become convinced that their version of the story is the superior one (see, for a classic example, Sterek and Teen Wolf).
I think it's okay to feel frustrated about these stories and you can express that frustration within the fandom space. But when it starts to bleed outwards and impact upon the creators, actors, or whoever else is involved in the story's adaptation, that's an issue.
As for arguments that 'queer stories don't exist and we don't have any representation'... Sorry, but I was in fandom when literally no gay characters at all, ever, existed in canon. Ever. Fandom was the only way to find representation. These days, you have so many wonderful queer stories being told and we are being represented on screen. That's brilliant, and it's only going to improve from here on out.
Without turning this post into even more of an armchair psychologist moment than it already is, I would suggest that the drive to see queer characters in typically 'mainstream' stories is the result of a desire to see our stories as normal and normalised to the general public. Take Mike and Will. To tell a slowburn coming-of-age gay story set in the 80s with sci-fi elements would be seriously significant and could potentially mark a genuine shift in how gay stories are presented. I sincerely hope this is what the Duffers have planned - or, at least, that they have realised is what the story needs.
But it's a very fine line to tread between hoping for queer stories and lobbying for them to an adversarial degree.
And at the end of the day, if you want to see more queer media, go ahead and create it. Nothing is stopping you.
