For the purposes of understanding this rant: I am an insulin dependent diabetic with other chronic issues including but not limited to ADHD, chronic fatigue, severe anxiety, have skin reactions to adhesives, and horrible proprioception that leads to me walking into stuff a lot. I use a continuous glucose monitor and insulin pump, which require regular supplies to be used. I am also dealing with the American health insurance industry.
Once again, insurance is being moronic. It's bad enough that I have multiple different medical supply companies, including separate ones for insulin pump and cgm supplies, that I can't keep straight. None of them autoship the supplies or offer online options, you have to call and confirm they are shipping the same damn thing each time you need them despite being a life-long need and having the prescriptionon file. Phone calls trigger my anxiety more than almost anything, I physically stop being able to get words out if I even make it to the dialing/answering a call step most of the time. With the ADHD, I don't remember a lot of day-to-day stuff fairly frequently, including when I need to reorder supplies. If I remember to do so before being completely out of them, it's usually after business hours are over.
Well, the company who supplies the cgm and sensors only sends a month at a time, rather than three months like the pump supplier does. No idea why, it seems so wasteful to do it this way. A one month supply of sensors is 3, each worn for up to 10 days. You only get one shot to put them in, if they fail or physically get removed, the sensor cannot be reused. Considering they only send the minimum you would need for that month, it's a serious inconvenience to have a sensor fail/get removed early.
Due to my pump sites and my skin hating the adhesive used for the cgms, I only have so many places I can put the sensor that will work. I'm pretty much limited to sides of my upper thighs and the back of my upper arms. My poor proprioception means I bump into things like furniture and doors constantly. I've lost so many pump sites and sensors from accidently brushing against stuff it's unreal, even when taping them down to hell and back. It's rare to get through a full week without losing one or the other.
Well, last week I put in my last sensor from the batch and forgot I needed to reorder them again. Okay, normal. I do this every month. Just have to remember to wake up several hours early to make sure I don't miss their business hours and try to not have an anxiety attack about making a phone call. I did not in fact remember to attempt to call in a timely manner. Then I lost the last sensor, which was on my right thigh, from putting on jeans to go to an appointment. Best I can figure is the waistband got caught at just the right angle to pull the sensor out.
Big problem. I'm now out of sensors, which tell my pump what my blood sugar is as to control a program on the pump that regulates blood sugar better. Because, as mentioned, I'm the queen of forgetfulness when it comes to basic things, including remembering to stab and jab myself to test blood and inject insulin when not on the pump/gcm combo. This results in my blood sugar either becoming too high or too low, which results in more health problems, forgetfulness, and exhaustion.
I somehow gather up the spoons to make it to my appointment, which is impressive in itself for me because I'm always exhausted and summer heat amplifies that by 1,000. I even somehow stave off the anxiety attack by phone call and get my order placed post appointment. It will take 5-7 business days to get the new sensors, per the company. Not ideal given they help keep me alive and semi-functioning, but I can't will them here faster.
Flash forward to today, I finally get the delivery of sensors. I've already used most of my spoons for the day, so I just want to put the thing in and rest. Nope. First sensor I tried didn't have the little thread/needle that actually gets the blood glucose measurements hadn't gone in and the sensor got stuck in the injector. So it's useless. I try again and manage to inject the second attempt. It still has to complete warm up or it may fail. If it doesn't fail, I have to avoid accidentally pulling it out.
Now I have to call both the cgm company itself and the medical supply company to beg for more sensors, if I can even make the calls. I can keep my eyes open because of exhaustion + heat. I'm annoyed and angry at the whole needlessly complicated mess it takes to stay alive. I have other stuff I need to do as well, but zero energy.
Can we please overhaul this system so that it's actually functional and not just an obstacle(or mountain of obstacles)? Pretty please? I shouldn't be limited to three per month and forced to figure out who to call then make said call every time something needs replacing again that I will have to do for the rest of my life.

Rant ahead.
This headline is meant to jump out as “wasteful spending,” like an expose to drive outrage and further fuel the argument that we can’t afford / shouldn’t have transgender individuals in the military. The article breaks down how the money was spent but doesn’t really explain WHY, making it further seem like it is a lot of money for a relatively small number of individuals (1500) receiving transgender-specific healthcare services. A minor nod is made to indicate that transgender individuals are valued in the military as a way to justify costs, but even that is cast in such a way to focus less on the humanity of the individual and more on the military’s need for more staff — almost as if saying that “Yeah, they come with more costs and aren’t preferred, but we need soldiers and our capitalist economy isn’t making enough poor people desperate enough to fill our ranks!” Language is powerful, and the tone and vague wording is meant to lead the reader to a negative conclusion. It’s hurtful and disgusting.
Before even tackling these arguments, first and foremost, I must say that transgender healthcare is PRIMARY CARE. It is not optional or avoidable or elective or specialty care. It is care for transgender individuals to live as their authentic selves. It is HEALTH CARE. The reality is that transgender healthcare is expensive because of many reasons.
First, healthcare in America is expensive. Any medical need that is not minor and acute (requiring just a doctor or urgent care visit), such as an emergency room trip or chronic / lifelong care conditions, can quickly become very expensive. But, breaking down the numbers means that the average spent per transgender individual based on the figures provided is just $5,333. Since 2016. Not a terribly high number for the US, especially compared to other conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, PTSD, or any number of common conditions for Americans, veterans, or active duty service people.
Second, because of stigma and discrimination, accessing appropriate and affirming transgender care is difficult. Not every provider is affirming or provides the services competently. This means that often individuals have to go to specialty clinics which charge higher, specialty prices (even though, again, it should not be specialty care), or they have to go to a larger, urban, university hospital, which can also charge fairly high prices for all services as a monopolistic provider. So this will naturally add to costs.
Third, in order to obtain affirming surgeries, hormone therapy, or other care, many states, insurance companies, or providers will require trans individuals to engage in mental health services. These services are often used to confirm a gender dysphoria diagnosis, an official diagnosis that confirms that a person’s sex at birth does not align with their gender. This is used to obtain insurance approval for further care; it does not mean that a transgender person is mentally ill. In order to diagnose or approve further primary care related to transgender health needs, these mental health services may need to be maintained for sometimes as long as a year (at least one visit a month to stay in care, for 12+ months, or at least 12 visits). This is not an option. It is usually required. The article notes that mental health services made up a large chunk of the $8 million. Mental health services are also not that uncommon for service people due to PTSD or transitioning out of the military; mental health conditions are also more common with any marginalized group due to societal stigma and prejudice.
Fourth, if gender affirming surgeries or hormone therapy are preferred (not required to affirm a person’s gender identity, but often highly desired to match gender identity with expression and reduce social stigma), these are also not cheap (thanks big pharma) or easy to access, as competent surgeons are also few and far between. Insurance may not cover all surgeries. “Top” surgeries may be to remove breast tissue, but augmentation for trans females may not. Sometimes even replacing nipples isn’t covered. “Bottom” surgery often isn’t. And coverage for additional therapies, such as surgeries to help with fat distribution, hair removal, voice therapy, etc. is very hit or miss. I would note that any surgery at retail price in America would likely land above $5,333.
I’m sure I’m missing points and other arguments to tackle this article. But the point in all this is that transgender healthcare shouldn’t be viewed as an expensive liability, unnecessary, or elective. It is healthcare. It has a cost. It should be covered. And for our transgender military personnel, since we tie coverage to employers in the US for some insane reason, it should simply be a covered cost, not a covered ‘news story.’ Period.

Figuring out how to move forward!
(Type one diabetes financing rant)
Hey guys. So I’m working on future life goals for myself (seriously, never done it before), and I’m doing research right now on ways to earn a living while being a type one diabetic, as well as the basic costs of living.
Living cost is insane for the average person, including: gas, food, car insurance, basic grooming tools, rent, as well as others like transport, utilities, etc. Besides all of this, we as T1D patients have to struggle with the cost of test trips (around $1 per strip, supposed to test a minimum of 8 times per day, not including when we go low or high, which requires more treatment costs, as well as medication), the glucose meter itself (usually ranging between $20-$100), insulin (Its dependent on the type, but all true insulin is upwards of $100 per vile without insurance, and if you’re not on a pump, you have 2 different types to purchase. You are required to take a shot of short acting each time you have a meal, and for high blood glucose correction. The basal is dependent on the person, but its usually given one time per day at a higher dosage), glucagon (an tool to use in case of critically low blood glucose, usually between $50-100), needles, ketone strips, lancets, and those are just a few of the BASICS.
Then there are tools such as the CGM (continuous glucose monitor), pump, A1C monitor, etc. Don’t even get me started on their pricing, nevermind the tools necessarily to utilize the devices themselves, however the benefits of owning such devices are drastically life altering.
These are all things the average person wouldn’t need to consider when accounting for their weekly, monthly, and yearly spending. For a type one diabetic, the tools and medications listed above are as secondhand and necessary as the average persons’ grocery shopping. That being said, even this comparison isn’t completely accurate, while a T1D patient isn’t as in control of their usage of these products, such as one simply eating certain meals to avoid higher spending costs. Maintaining a regular A1C and glucose reading is imperative to a type one diabetic, as not only is it reliant on how much he or she spends, but also on their basic health, their longevity of life, and in critical cases; life or death.
Now, we begin on health insurance. Some insurances will make a person with a preexisting chronic illness pay more, as their cost of living is higher. Nevermind the mental strain this has on someone dealing with T1D, as they may need to accommodate for nutritionists, meal plans, mental health experts, and medications as many experience dramatic highs and lows brought on from the instability of his or hers own body.
Personally, I’m disabled due to other health complications brought on by my weakened immune system, stress of living, and basic care requirements. I’ve been called a “brittle” type one diabetic since I was diagnosed at 6.
That being said, I’m determined to not let this hold me down, so back to the drawing board! I want to travel, explore, and experience new things in life. Getting my health under control is check number one, then accommodating for my illness with my goals and dreams...well, that we’ll just have to figure out.

tw death cw death trigger warning death etc
Tumblr media
let's look at some statistics.
(don't worry, I'll do the math.)
in 2015 there were 320.64 million people in america. 2.71 million died. 0.84% of the total population of people died that year. to match 2016's total population it would need to rise by 2.3 million, meaning 5 million babies were born (or people who immigrated).
in 2016, 322.94 lived here. 2.74 died. 0.85%. 4.75 were born.
2017, 324.99 alive, 2.81 died. 0.86%. 4.5 born.
2018, 326.69, 2.84 dead, 0.87%, 4.4 born.
2019, 328.24, 2.85 dead, 0.87%, 4.5 born.
and in 2020, 329.88 lived. the population slowly increased, the death rate slowly increased which makes sense exponentially, and the birth rate was pretty standard. it's fine.
but... this is sobering.
out of 329.88 million people, 3.36 million died. that's 1.02%. that's a jump by 0.15%, which when you realize that's 494,000 people...
usually it's been so far that the number of people who died each year increased an average of less than 0.01% aka 33,000.
461,000 extra people died in 2020.
but that's just the beginning.
691,000 people died from heart disease which happens every year because people die from being old (or 400 pounds overweight and I do mean that literally) and their hearts give out. but you know what, if less than 700K people die and over 4 million people are born that's totally fine. people gotta die, it's a fact of life.
600,000 people died from cancer. fuck cancer.
192,000 people died from accidents. oopsie.
160,000 people died from strokes. if your heart is stronger than your brain then you're probably gonna die by one of these. it sucks but again old people gotta die somehow.
151,000 people died from their lungs. smoking does that. it sucks but it makes sense. it's easy to die from any of your major organs failing.
133,000 people died from alzheimers which is, again, something that afflicts mostly the old. it's a shame really because of how much of a cruel fate it is to slowly lose your memories instead of just passing away all at once if your heart just decided to stop beating while you slept.
100,000 people died from pharmaceutical companies hoarding insulin for money like the greedy corporate fucking morality-whores they are diabetes. unfortunate. mostly preventable. insulin should be free, fuck you if you disagree.
53,000 people died from pneumonia and the flu. so you know what if you think that it's a valid talking point to say "nobody gets the flu anymore" you're a goddamn idiot so shut the fuck up you stupid cunts.
nearly the same amount died from kidneys.
and 44,000 people killed themselves. sad. although I'm surprised as hell that the number of reported suicides went DOWN??? during pandemic? which seems contrarian but hey it's good news.
now, I'm gonna take a brief segue to point out that cancer stayed at the same number and this probably shows something nefarious about cancer research and big pharma because it stayed scarily static and I might put on a tinfoil hat and say it's because I think the government might be infecting the population with cancer in order to get more money from people through cancer research as a big money laundering op to finance their underground secret wars and the black market because that's something they would totally do. but that's unimportant.
also, heart disease noticeably increased over the years but like, as time goes on and the population increases more age demographics get larger and older so that makes sense. stroke, alzheimer's, kidney disease, them too. but what's REALLY WEIRD is just how many accidents increased exponentially. I can't just attribute it to dumbasses with gender reveal parties and dumbfuck republicans having huge fuckass fires, something nefarious is going on.
and one last thing... look. gun violence is bad. mass shootings, gang warfare, cops, they're out of control. and they mostly target children, people of color and/or religious minorities, and the lower class, homeless, impoverished, etc. it's not as bad as the left makes it out to be in terms of pure numbers but it's worse than the right makes it out to be in terms of statistical analysis and common sense. more people die by their own hands than by guns. just like the war on drugs is a colossal fucking waste of time and taxpayer money, a gun ban would be an expensive waste of time, and if you are out here advocating for BANS then you're a moron who doesn't understand basic fucking civics and is doomed to never operate a successful government and probably shouldn't even vote, because all we need is treating them the same way we treat cars, this is a perfectly reasonable compromise between the "ban everything we find even slightly morally questionable and yet ignore why that's a fucking stupid mentality so says every single queer who's ever been victim to religious based oppression" left, and the "we hate black people but not as much as we love our rooty tooty point n shooty and we will never accept any bill that limits military expenditures because GUN GUNS GUNS YEEHAW" right, because you have to appeal to the majority in a democracy and if you don't like that then fine go ahead and wave your pastel hammer/sickle because you've already given up your rights as a voting american and you live in this system so you have to abide by it unless you're willing to get your hands dirty and actually get off your ass and do some direct action and pipe bomb tesla microsoft apple sony disney or any other actively harmful corporation. didn't mean to go on this tangent but oh well. the highest stats I could find say that less than 15K people died at max in 2015 and honestly given that in the past 20 years it's been between 10 and 15K yearly I gotta say that 30 per day is really not that high and the best way to prevent these is control & reform & prevention strategies and not waste the government's time because they can barely pave the roads (AND CAR ACCIDENTS KILL SO MANY MORE PEOPLE). anyway this is one of the dumbest hills to die on and it's not that high a number and every single person who wastes all their time arguing about guns and ignoring diabetes and cops and suicide, the much more important issues in our society (defunding the police and putting that money into free insulin and mental health care will save more lives than the piggies ever will), is a moron who's missing the big picture.
now back to my original point
345,000 PEOPLE DIED FROM COVID.
THIS IS INDISPUTABLE.
WEAR A MASK, DIPSHITS.
OR I WILL COUGH ON YOU ON SIGHT.
and stop calling it a hoax. you look like an idiot.
and either pay fast food workers more or stop filling the mcdonald's line three blocks every friday night because you're too stupid and lazy to cook real food and NOT scream at a 15 year old because they didn't give your disgusting cheeseburger 16 pickles or they gave you 5 instead of 6 mcchickens or fucked something else up because you suck shit at speaking clearly and ordering politely, dumbass karen. pick one, you ungrateful fucking assholes.
rant over.
