when gillion tidestrider comes to the surface his body shows no signs of ever having been brushed by the creeping touch of imperfection. no scars, no chipped teeth or crooked nose, just pristine skin, entirely symmetrical markings and broad shoulders. not that gillion hasn't known pain, no he's experienced more than enough of that for ten lifetimes. it just so happens that when you spend your days getting stabbed and cut and burned and shot and flayed and torn limb from limb all within the elders' simulations and not, as it were more traditionally, within the confines of reality, no lasting damage survives to tell the tale of what you've suffered.

and so the only thing betraying the carefully molded image of perfection, of heroism, is his hair, crudely chopped to chin length by uncaring hands before he was sent to pack his bags, leave the undersea and never return.

now gillion has a whole tapestry of scars, all recounting memories that he can be proud of, all but one. he could never be proud of how he earned those blood red, branching patterns. but they are part of his story nonetheless, and he would not trade them for anything.

his teeth are almost all chipped, from getting chucked against walls and floors and ceilings, from falling and getting punched in the face, from biting what he shouldn't've bitten many many times, and they too are part of his story.

his nose is crooked, broken from a nasty fight, and then broken again during an utterly embarrassing incident involving ball bearings. it is part of his story.

every day gillion looks less and less like the hero he was prophesied to be, with his chipped coral and the scar tissue covering more than half of his body and his fidgety hands and the scorch marks all over his armor and the crescent moon tattoo on his wrist and the crazed look he gets in his eyes sometimes, or so chip tells him. every day gillion looks less like a hero and more like a pirate. more like himself.

It really is just a tragedy that Barry was chewed up and spit out of the military industrial complex where he was rewarded for violence, violence that he was instructed to perform, and when he acted on his own in a moment of trauma and fear and desperation he was (rightfully) discharged and sent into a world where he had no support and a lot of trauma. And instead of being welcomed home by someone who cares for him, he was welcomed by Fuches, who has known him since childhood and knows he is alone and knows he deeply desires companionship, comes in and takes him into his arms to turn him into a murderer for profit. He was rewarded with companionship and belonging for his violence and compliance, by Fuches and the military.

He fell in love with acting because they are also a group of people he can ensconce himself in and feel acceptance and belonging. But then he’s asked to re traumatize himself for the sake of his craft. To make his acting authentic no matter how much it hurts him. And he does it. Because they applaud him when he relives his worst trauma because it’s for the craft. He is only ever given ‘love’ when he is hurting himself or when he is hurting others, that is the only time he is rewarded with ‘love’ or admiration. And unlike Fuches and his military buddies, with acting he felt he found people that could possibly love him (Sally, Cousineau) and he loved. He felt like this was his only doorway to normalcy. Being loved and admired for something other than violence.

And he probably won’t ever know.

Pyxis is the Prince of the Star Kingdom, a planet in the Gamble Galaxy. Its a bit far from Popstar though. He and Fluff are dating.

Paannel is one if Void's first creations, alongside Nebula. She was the base for many of Void's later creations.

Meri is some random fish person who lives on Popstar. She was raised by Kine and Mine and just never knew what was going on above her.

And finally Gardener. They're the Royal Gardener, if their name wasn't obvious enough. Meri once saved them from drowning and the two have been friends ever since.
