YAOI ELECTIONS FINALE SPECIAL REPORT- HOUR 5

This is Ginnyking reporting on the Yaoi Elections Finale. Hour 5 of the polls was a heated one, with Junjou Romantica maintaining its lead over DRAMAtical Murder. At one point during the hour, it looked as though DRAMAtical Murder was going to retake the lead, only for Junjou Romantica to get the votes to pull comfortably ahead. At press time, the race remains highly contested, though the voting trend appears to be in Junjou Romantica's favor.

Our analysts have proposed two scenarios for how this will play out. One scenario is that Junjou Romantica will maintain its lead over the next hour. The other scenario is that DRAMAtical Murder will retake dominance, leading to a period where the two camps rapidly exchange the lead with one another.

Elsewhere, we sat down with the leader of the fallen Margels camp, Charlie @m0ntaigne to hear their words on situation. When asked for comment on the current election round, they merely responded, "libera per terras haec animantibus exstat voluntas". Others in the Margels camp have solidified their support around Junjou Romantica, with the express purpose of defeating DRAMAtical Murder.

Miyagi’s Alter Ego

I’ve been wanting to make another Terrorist text post for long while, so here it is. This topic is a bit unusual, though.

Basically, I would like to talk about Miyagi’s mysterious alter-ego, Donichi. Donichi lives in my mind rent free, so it is time to immortalise Donichi on my blog.

Who or what is Donichi? To find out, first we have to go back to act 5 of Junjou Terrorist (equivalent to Season 2 Episode 8 of the anime). This is the chapter where Shinobu has been avoiding Miyagi after finding the photo of his old teacher. Miyagi dons a disguise to corner Shinobu at his house, they have a shouting match, and then he whisks Shinobu away in his car, leading to the climax of their story arc.

Like many, I first experienced this story through watching the anime. Afterwards, I wanted more, so I hunted for the English manga online. The first 12 volumes of Junjou Romantica were officially translated into English around this time, but if you searched, you were probably going to find scanlations online, which is how I experienced a large chunk of the early manga chapters.

So as a reminder, it went like this when Miyagi confronted Shinobu with the photo...

Shinobu is upset about the photo...then, after some more yelling...

After which, Miyagi pulls Shinobu into his car...

Don’t worry! He’ll be with me for a while!

This is where the anime moves to the next scene. But there’s actually a few more lines in the manga.

‘Donichi?!’

Who is Donichi?!? Miyagi’s mysterious alter ego?!

I was so mystified by this back when I first read this. I knew there was stuff in the manga that didn’t get adapted into anime. So somehow, it seemed plausible that Miyagi might have some kind of...persona? Or that he would ask Shinobu to tell his family that he’s with someone else, rather than himself - he was trying to hide from the dean and Risako after all...

But ‘Donichi’…really? Isn’t it kind of out of character for Miyagi to create a new persona all of a sudden? And why the heck would it be a good idea for Shinobu to tell his family he’s with this Donichi?!? Now they really will think it’s a kidnapping! It even sounds like there could end up being a ransom!!

Of course, it’s a mistranslation, and quite a funny one. Actually, just hypothetically speaking, if you were to search for this chapter of Junjou Terrorist you could probably still find the scanlation, which would mean that people who want to read the manga from chapter 1 in English online these days (do they exist??) may still run into this extremely mysterious line.

Well, back then Japanese was inscrutable to me, even if teenage me had access to the Japanese volumes, they would not be able to read it. But now I can, so let’s look...

(Miyagi) 電話かけろ

sakki no gaikokujin to kazoku ni “donichi ha ore to issho ni iru” tte ie

“Make a phone call. Tell that foreigner and your family that you’ll be with me for the weekend.”

(Shinobu:) 土日？...どこ行くつもりだ

donichi? ...doko iku tsumori da

“The weekend? ...Just where are we going?”

That’s weird...no Donichi? it feels like a very different line, but this is definitely the same scene.

It’s amusingly simple.

土日は俺と一緒にいる

donichi ha ore to issho ni iru

Lit. As for the weekend, (you will be) with me

土日　donichi, means weekend. Literally: Saturday (土）and Sunday (日).

For some reason, this 土日 donichi was not translated, and instead became transliterated as ‘Donichi’. Why did it end up this way? 

I couldn’t say for sure, but maybe the wording is confusing. Miyagi literally tells Shinobu: Tell your family “you’ll be with me”, complete with quotation marks. 

Maybe the translator read this line as Miyagi telling Shinobu to tell his family word for word, ‘donichi ha ore to issho ni iru’. It’s not like Shinobu can repeat this phrase meaning “you’ll be with me” word for word to his family, it wouldn’t make any sense from Shinobu’s POV. 

To make it sense somehow, they turned donichi into a name. If we read donichi like a name, it sounds like, ‘tell your your family, “donichi is with me”’. Actually, it somehow makes logical sense! Although it is wrong. (lol) Shinobu’s incredulous response somehow supports this version of events as well.

But actually, it’s a simple enough line. Miyagi is just telling Shinobu, call your foreigner friend and your family and tell them you’ll be with me for the weekend. I mean, it’s not like that needs to be a secret. Shinobu already spends a lot of time with Miyagi, and his family (as in, the dean) already trust him enough, so it’s probably not that weird for them to be together for a weekend. He was just in a disguise to come to their house because...because...why was he in a disguise anyway? How is it any less suspicious than just turning up as himself? But I’m digressing...

Shinobu’s response is incredulous not because of a mysterious Donichi, but because he’s like, you’re taking me away for the whole weekend? Where are we going?

As mentioned before, in the anime, Miyagi just says ‘It’ll be a long drive’ and doesn’t say anything to Shinobu about telling his family. (The anime likes to cut exposition like that...) This may have helped to contributed to my younger self’s belief that there was hidden Donichi lore in the original manga, which just never made it to the anime...

And then they drive away...

Somehow I can never forget ‘Donichi’, even though I know it isn’t real. It become its own little canon in my mind back in the days when we all (OK, maybe not all) relied on the wisdom of fan translators and never doubted their veracity. It’s kind of hilarious how easily I was able to believe that Miyagi might have a secret persona. I was confused, I didn’t understand, but...I just accepted it. And I sort of wondered why Shinobu’s family never asked who Donichi was. Actually, Donichi was just in our hearts all along...

I just wanted to share this amusing memory and bit of Junjou fanscanlation history. Just to note, this is not intended to mock. This kind of stuff happens in translation all the time! Translators aren’t infalliable.

But it is also just really funny.

Regardless, I am so thankful that people took the time to make scanlations back then, as well as to the people who still work hard to make them now! I genuinely don’t think I would be as into JR as I am now without them! And even when I reread the manga in Japanese and everything became clear, I still thought...you know, the translators really captured each couple’s essence so well. It doesn’t feel different at all.

Hello! I've been doing a retrospective on the Junjou Romantica anime and I stumbled across your blog while looking for info on the stage play (rip). I just wanted to ask, are there a lot of active fans for this series online? I know s3 was in 2015, and to my knowledge the is no official translation of the manga in English past #12, so I assume there is not a lot of content to go off of. When did you get into JR? What motivates you to participate in the fandom? Ik that was a lot lol but thank u!

I’m happy to say that the JR fandom is still very active and thriving! There’s tons of posts every day in the JR tags and there’s a pretty big Discord server for JR & SIH with over 300 people in it.

I got into JR in the Spring of 2017. I just finished watching Yuri On Ice during that time and was really wanting to watch a show similar to it, which is where I discovered JR & SIH. I watched both and was instantly hooked. I re-watched it everyday and read the whole entire manga in the span of like 3-4 days. But because no one else I knew watched shows like JR & SIH, I couldn’t talk to anyone about it, so I decided to look up some JR tags on Tumblr and saw that the fandom was still active and had a decent sized following and decided after a while to make my account be solely for JR & SIH.

Honestly my motivation to participate in the fandom still is because 1.) There’s still SO many people here on Tumblr who actively keep up with the latest chapters/fandom in general so seeing all these people coming together to share their love for JR really inspired and still inspires me to keep posting about it and 2.) I have such a strong love and appreciation for this fandom that even that alone motivates me to post about it. I’ve met so many incredible people because of this fandom and it feels so amazing to see so many other people share their love for this amazing series. 💜

ok i'm gonna rant for a second because as a returned fan who's also a returned larrie and a big loud trans queer person, i just wanna say that the fan pov on HL as both a coupling and individuals is my favorite and most behated discourse, like—

1. half of y'all are still pulling top/bottom discourse in 2021 and trying to equate physical attributes, mannerisms, and even personal aesthetics to sexual preferences like that has any bearing over shit...did you read a bad BL like junjou romantica in middle school and just internalize all those dynamics??

2. also a lot of you in number one also think that top = dom and bottom = sub and that also is determined by physical stature and personal aesthetics, as well as dictating a person's entire personality, so i gotta ask—are you the same person in the bedroom as you are in the workplace? with friends or family? does your love for, i dunno, wearing bracelets mean you also like being dominated and handcuffed? i just wanna understand the logic??

1b. + 2b. you do know that being vers is a thing right.....that also exists....just, y'know, to take into consideration....

3. accusing people—particularly! trans and nonbinary people!—who don't believe harry is cis of being transphobic because you don't like their understanding + relatability to things he's said about gender and how he showcases himself as well as speaking over them to try and reason his 'true identity' by using your weird obsession gender binaryism as fallback reasoning is the actual transphobia, but go off i guess.

4. constantly trying to pit harry and louis against each other—and/or against the other 1d guys, other artists—and argue over who has it worse, who's choosing to stay closeted, who's more or less committed to the relationship, etc. is so vile i genuinely don't even want to talk to you.

4b. and i don't mean 'oh i'm more into louis' music/look/etc. so i pay a little more attention to him' or 'i've always felt drawn to harry for x reason so i'm more tuned into what he's doing' or any kind of normal/healthy "favoritism" that may include going back and forth between the two of them depending on what's going on at the time. i mean: picking a favorite between the two and toeing the line of toxic solo behavior by constantly putting the other one down so you can praise and baby your poor little meow meow at every turn. i hardly think you can call yourself a larrie if you're doing this.

5. too many people read portrait-of-a-you-know-what's blog for too long and internalized a lot of his thoughts in his downward spiral into a conspiracy theory-riddled anti that hates harry and thinks he's choosing to be closeted for pity or clout or what and poor louis, because i see so much of the favoritism links back to that person's reasoning for changing his mind on things + using his ""credentials"" to reason being in the right when in reality, he was literally just going off the rails by feeding into all the BS media fodder. also what credentials?? i wanna see that certificate!

6. i have a personal nitpick over the 'mommy louis' rhetoric that goes hand-in-hand with posing harry as this big dom Man and making louis into this small submissive uwu baby archetype who just wants his big strong husband to seed his curvy body's absent womb aka blouie rhetoric sorry not sorry that also dives into the momrry mindset primarily originating from harry's years-long clear adoration of pregnancy and babies rather than trying to fit him into a box related to cis womanhood + maternity—in turn satisfying gender binaryism once again!—but we'll get into that another day

After finishing watching the Junjou Romantica anime and reading the manga in three days, I was in love. I wanted keep up with the manga and was eager to explore the newly-found BL genre.

It fits the vibe of YM&T. Everytime I see it I smile. I have never changed it and I don't think I ever will.

7. Why did you choose your header?

Exactly the same reason as above.

A lot? I don't really keep track.

I don't know, but I think it's 160-ish?

JR/SiH shitposting is one of my hobbies.

At least twice a day. Noticeably less since the creation of the Lame SiHJR Server, but still very frequently.

13. Did you ever have a fight with another blog?  Who won? I don't fight with anyone online. It's unproductive.

14. How do you feel about ‘you need to reblog this’ posts?

I struggle with mild OCD, so they are difficult for me. I have to remind myself that they have no bearing or real affect on reality.

15. Do you like tag games?

I do. I tend to keep them on Watermelon Neon though.

Yes, especially ones that can be about JR/SiH.

17. Which one of your mutuals do you think is Tumblr famous?

I had coffee with the writer of Webcam Secrets last weekend and I was (and still am) starstruck.

No, I respect my mutuals and JR/SiH friends in a platonic/almost mom-like way, especially since much older than most of them.

I don’t know which one you want me to answer these questions for so I’mma do all three of the recent ones i reblogged in rapid succession because I’m extra and cringey like that: 

Fanfic Writer Ask Game- 

1. Has a comment left on a fic of mine ever made me laugh out loud? 

Not yet! They always tend to make me smile a lot but I haven’t lol’d yet!

2. Has a comment ever made me cry? 

I’m going to be honest and say that whenever I get comments from people, saying that they read all my stuff, that they always look forward to an update from me, or that my writing is helping them through a difficult time, I tear up! It hits me in my chest like GWAH.

3. Have I ever made myself laugh out loud or cry when writing? 

Never cry but definitely laugh! I like writing comedy or adding it in my writing a lot because it’s fun for me and fun for the reader. It also gives me an excuse to get my horrible jokes out of my brain. 

10. What word do I keep using like it’s going out of style?

This is a hard one because I’m not sure! I spend a ridiculous amount of time worrying about repeating words. I know I love using the word ‘polite’ and ‘huff’! Also ‘offer’ and ‘oblige’. 

20 Fandom Ask Memes- 

1. If I could hit any character, who would it be? 

This is a hard one because I wanna hit A LOT of characters with no repercussions. Because I’m still VERY EMOTIONAL about Yakuza 7, I would like to hit Sawashiro as hard as I can. I know that I would also love to beat up Sid the Sloth from Ice Age. Lloyds from Tiger & Bunny. Oh! And Fuyuhiko from Junjou Romantica as well as Takano from SIH.

2. What fandoms am I no longer a part of? 

I also can’t really answer this one because I don’t really join fandoms. Like, the main purpose of this blog was to say whatever came to mind in regards to characters I liked/disliked whether or not I’d be met with hate from the fandom. So far, the reception for my stupid posts have been positive in JR land! I would say that I am not really in the One Piece fandom anymore. This is because I don’t write OP fanfiction as often as I used to and I find the discords to be rather intimidating because not only do A LOT of members tend to overwhelm me a bit but I’m so afraid of coming across as a bad person or cringey or stupid. TBH did leave an OP discord over something stupid I said that I know I blew out of proportion by overthinking. The discord was kinda dying anyways. [shrug]

3. Characters I’d marry in an instant? 

OMG EASY: Kasuga Ichiban from Yakuza 7 (he’s the perfect man), Legosi from Beastars (if only I were a white rabbit), and Sadie Adler from RDR2 (I have the biggest crush on her omg).

10. Characters that deserved worse? 

Hate to say it but Barnaby from Tiger & Bunny. I dunno, I felt like he kinda got off a little too easy with the way he treated Kotetsu in the beginning. (Kotetsu was his partner for their work as heroes since they have the same powers and they didn’t get along because of their differences. However, while Kotetsu was at least trying to befriend him after a while, Barnaby seemed to make more of an effort to be an ass.) 

Also, Takano from SIH. He deserves to be punched in half by Donkey Kong. Hiroki from JR needs a big serving of humble pie. Fuyuhiko from JR should be thrown in a well somewhere. 

Fun Meta Asks for Writers- 

1. Current projects? 

I signed up for my first ever creative writing class, so I’m working on a couple original stories that I have been way too lazy about AND finnicky about because I want my writing to be 100% perfect ALL THE TIME AND THE FIRST TIME OR I’M TERRIBLE. 

For fanfiction, I’m currently working on a Spiderman AU for JR, a Professer AU for Egoist because i guess I want to rewrite their story lol, FEUD of course, and for a T&B work called Firsts: Necessary Evils. 

2. What I most look forward to writing? 

In FEUD, I’m really looking forward to writing a new conflict that’s coming up between Ijuuin and pretty much everyone else. 

I am mainly excited about the Spiderman AU because I LOVE superheroes and I think the style and plots that I have for it are very good! I have it set up quite different where there’s a chapter where Akihiko is Spiderman, then another chapter where Misaki is, and the last chapter is them both being Spiderman. What I have set up for Misaki when he’s the hero is just YES SO MUCH FUN! 

For the Professor AU where Hiroki and Nowaki are both professors, I’m excited to be kind of boring. It’s a sweet, slice of life story about two dorks who are a little awkward falling in love. It’s charming and not very dramatic. I just want to take the advice of my creative writing prof which is to dare to be boring. 

Other than that, it’s my original stories. I’m becoming less afraid of writing them so the more I do, the more excited I become to write more.

3. What is one scene I want to write but at the moment can’t be arsed (I fucking hate this word ugh ‘arsed’ it sounds stupid)? 

I’m so sorry for those who read FEUD but it’s literally the next part of this coming chapter. I dunno, I’m just...lazyyyyyyyyy. Lol I’M GETTING TO IT, but at the moment, I’ve been kinda lazy with my writing. I don’t know why, probably because it’s sad bitch hour every hour. 

10. How would I describe my writing process?

I don’t know if I have something that counts as a writing process, but I just start writing when I feel really compelled by an idea. If I am inspired enough, I just write. Then, I figure out a beginning to it or an end to it or how to blend it into a story if I wish to. Afterwards, I edit the shit out of it and then let it sit on my laptop for a while until I’m brave enough to post it since I think a lot of what comes from my hands is terrible lol. If I’m craving inspiration, I’ll look up quotes and just go from there. I also tend to think about scenarios A LOT in terms of my favorite characters so I always seem to have some kind of idea.

Welcome to the Sekaiichi and Junjou Fanfiction Catalogue!

Hello everyone and welcome to the Sekaiichi Hatsukoi and Junjou Romantica fanfiction catalogue! We’re going to be a Tumblr based database where we strive to form an alphabetized and organized system for all known fics in the SIH and JR fandoms! 

Given what the admins have learnt in other fandoms, we know how important it is to have fanfictions all in one place as opposed to having to search everywhere to find the fic you wanted. So that’s why we’re trying to create an organized database here where you can come and find any fic that you would like.

Our goal is to create an alphabetized and organized database of all known fics to the Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi and Junjou Romantica fanbase. We’ll be creating masterlists, organizing tags, and simplifying navigation for easy access for many years to come, regardless of the size of the fanbase.

Think of this as your local library, but for SIH and JR fics!

We will also be around to answer any questions and we also will be able to find fics for you as well if you’re looking for specific fics! If you would like to see a fantastic example of a fanfiction catalogue, you can check out this one here 

As a rule, right now, we’ll be posting masterlists for fics every Tuesday and Thursday at 1pm EST! We will update the tags accordingly (so many tags will not be utilized until later on). During this time, you can send us asks looking for fics or even recommending fics to us!

Hey! I wanted to ask do you know when SiH 30 and Junjou get updated on manga sites? I saw pics of raws here and there so I assumed it's out and my Japanese is a bit below mediocre so I'd rather wait for the English versions. Also, is there a better website you could recommend? I use mangago since I thought it's the most updated one, but if you know of another that gets updates earlier, I'm all ears. :D Thank you for your time and your awesome blog! Have an awesome day. ♥️

This ask was actually quite a while ago, but nothings really changed.  ^^;;

And for the record, I believe the scanlators of SiH posts directly to mangago.  So you’ll get it quicker there or maybe mangadex too?  not sure.  

@penicillinshock will update the chapters they finish on JR on their tumblr ^^
