As a tribute for the woman who began it all, Julie Powell, I am beginning a series where I present the food of Julie and Julia. The movie was perhaps my awakening to the magic that food is and made me fall in love with it. It made me appreciate the beauty of food and the ingredients.

When I was down with Covid on the day I was supposed to get married, I watched a documentary on Netflix about Julia Child and proceeded to cook for hours in the summer heat. She’s not really known here in Germany, but I’ve continued to try and improve my cooking and be more ambitious with her guidance. Happy pi day! I think stories are always better if they have a delicious pie in them. So here's a random list of pies on screen, that I lowkey want to make and eat. 🥧

🎞 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

🥧 Gooseberry Pie

The queen poisoned Snow before she could put it in the oven. That's the real tragedy. I've never had a gooseberry pie, but my dad has a small gooseberry bush that might produce enough for a pie some day.

🥧 Chocolate Silk Pie

Julie makes a pie in the opening of the movie while musing about how cooking brings her peace in a chaotic world. I had never had a chocolate silk pie before, but after the movie I looked up a recipe and made it. It's now one of my most requested pies at Thanksgiving. Although I like to use an oreo crust where Julie used a Graham cracker.

At least I think it's a fish pie because of the design on top, not positive. Fish pie wouldn't be my favorite to eat. It was baked in a wood fired oven, and man, did the crust look amazing.

(This includes the books as well since I think only the Pumpkin Pasties are mentioned in the movies.) Shepherd's pie is pure comfort food. We aren't really shown pumpkin pasties, but they sound like mini pumpkin hand pies. I saw Binging with Babish make Treacle tart (Harry's favorite) and now it's on my wish list. I just have to order some golden syrup from the UK to make it.

We don't really know what kind of pie Rapunzel bakes in her tower kitchen, but the internet thinks it's raspberry rhubarb, which sounds awesome.

All the imaginary food in Neverland looked amazing to me as a kid. It would be fun to try to make a cream pie that was as colorful as the food in that scene. I wonder what flavor it should be? Inventing new pies is fun.

Arguably not pie, but it's a filling in a pasty, so close enough. Binging with Babish's recipe looks awesome, but I have yet to try it. Kronk is a proud cook, and I respect him for it.

Before I saw Waitress, I had made pies, but I never thought about inventing new pies. Jenna got me thinking more creatively. I've since made my own versions of her Dark Chocolate Strawberry, Chocolate Silk, Spaghetti Pie, and Ham and Cheese Quiche. FYI, one of the pies on the DVD cover has a lazy lattice, and I noticed. 👀

Monk got the crust perfectly placed and then stalled while he counted the peas. It hurt my heart that I never got to see the finished product. I should make more pot pies, they are awesome.

Avatar did not need a pie to be one of the best shows ever, but it did, because Avatar has it all. The face Aang makes when tempted with egg custard is adorable. Now I know why, as I made an egg custard a few years ago at Christmas.

I watched the first episode, and when they mentioned pie, I was like, this show is going to be good. Even though Tree Trunks was wisked to another dimension and never actually got to finish her pie, I ended up loving Adventure Time.

No joke, my therapist recommended this show to me because she knew I loved baking pies. I, of corse, immediately identified with the sad pie maker who was obsessed with making pies as a way to cope. I binged the entire series, then found out it was cancelled, and processed to mourn for the next week. I still want to try to recreate some of their signature pies. The Kiwi Cream is so pretty.

These the first video games I ever finished (my parents banned them so I didn't get to start playing until I was older). The combat still kind of scares me, but I took to the cooking right away. On my first play through, I was so excited to get Tabantha Wheat, so I could finally make pies. Wild's era Link is so much cooler because he's a pie maker. I always keep a few egg custard tarts in my inventory for some quick hearts.

Okay, I'm looking for movie recommendations. I recently watched Julie & Julia and The Devil Wears Prada for the first time and I absolutely loved both. I suppose these fall under the category of "chick flicks". Some others that I like that are in a similar vein are Pretty Woman, The Princess Diaries 1 & 2, Steel Magnolias, and Fried Green Tomatoes.

What I liked about Julie & Julia was how food was one of the central themes (I also loved how Julia was taller than her husband and not ashamed of it, and how they were still so mad about each other into their 40s and 50s). I've started watching Julia Child's cooking show, The French Chef, on YouTube as a result of my love for the movie. And in The Devil Wears Prada, I loved the glamor and sophistication and the look into the fashion world. Not to mention, Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci were fabulous in both movies.

I'm not looking for romantic comedies or the sappy stuff you see on the Hallmark channel. I would prefer movies where romance and men aren't central to the story.

/요리를 하고 싶게 만드는 영화. 다양한 서양식 음식이 많이 나와서 좋았다. 요리 영화를 보고 싶은 건 순전히 ‘카모메 식당’ 때문이었는데 같은 요리 영화라도 이렇게 관객마다 온도 차가 다를 수 있구나 싶다. ‘카모메 식당’은 일단 주로 오니기리(일본식 주먹밥) 밖에 나오지 않아서 너무 쉬웠다고요. 직접 만들어보고 싶은데 만들고 싶은 마음이 안 들었어. 넘나 easy... (물론 맛있게 만들라고 하면 당연히 못 만들겠지만. 음) 요건 다양한 요리법이 나와서 좋았다. 세세하게 나오지 않지만 어렵지 않은 음식들이 나오고 그 음식을 만드는 레시피(recipe)를 찾으면 할 수 있으니. 너무 어렵지도, 쉽지도 않았다.

그러고 보면 참 신기하다. 요리 책에 나와 있는 1번부터 7번 정도까지의 방법을 그대로 따라 하더라도 사람마다 다른 맛이 나온다는 게. 재료의 신선도, 재료의 숙성도의 문젠가? 예전에 백종원 선생님 레시피대로 브런치를 만들어 먹었는데 항상 몇 가지 재료를 빠뜨려서(심지어 냉장고에 있는 걸) 나중에 다시 하고, 그러다 망하고. 그걸 반복했던 기억이 나네. 영화 ‘심야식당’도 재밌다던데 다큐멘터리 형식인 듯해 볼까 고민 중이다. (다큐멘터리 영화는 ‘슈퍼소닉(Supersonic)' 외엔 많이 안 봤다. 자기 관심 분야가 아니면 역시 누군가의 일화를 접하는 것엔 흥미가 안 생기는 듯)

그리고 이 영화에선 메릴 스트립(Meryl Streep)이 너무나도 사랑스럽게 나온다. 영화 보는 내내 시점이 조금 헷갈렸는데 특이한 건 ’줄리아‘와 ’줄리‘가 한 번도 만나지 않는다는 거다. 그냥 1940년대에 프랑스에 정착해서 성공한 요리사가 된 줄리아/2002년에 살고 있고 요리사로서의 줄리아를 동경하며 글을 쓰는 블로거인 줄리. 이 둘의 이야기가 제대로 평행하게 나온다. 두 실화를 잘 녹여냈다. 나는 ’2002년도, 성공해있는 줄리아가 나중엔 자신을 동경하는 줄리를 만나는 결말을 맞을 거다. 그래서 성공한 덕후가 된 줄리를 보여주는 영화일 것‘이라고 생각했는데. 묘하게 어긋나면서도 전체적으로 보면 균형이 잘 맞는단 말이지?

줄리아에게도 아픔이 있다는 것도 보이고(아이를 가질 수 없었다) 그걸 메릴 스트립이 감정을 절제하면서 잘 연기했다고 생각한다. 메릴 스트립 연기야 말해 뭐해. 그리고 그런 줄리아를 늘 위로하는 폴도 너무 따뜻했고. 개인적으로 줄리아 부부를 연기한 이 두 사람의 연기가 더 돋보이는 작품이었다. 2002년도인 비교적 현재 시점인 줄리(에이미 아담스 역)는 아무래도 줄리아에 비해선 평면적인 캐릭터이다 보니. 그래도 줄리 부부도 너무 연기 잘 해주고.

’존버(존나 버틴다)는 성공한다‘는 문구를 떠올리면 아직도 많은 생각이 든다. 진짜 ’존버‘해서 성공하는 영역도 있고. 하지만 아무리 ’존버‘해도 성공할 수 없는 영역도 있는 것 같고. 적어도 경제적인 면, 현실을 바꾸는 원대한 포부 같은 카테고리에선 분명 성공할 수 있다는 결론! 자신이 존경하던 ’줄리아‘가 막상 ’줄리‘가 남긴 글을 마음에 안 들어 한다는 전화를 받고 상처받지만, 그래도 ’내 꿈을 이뤘어!‘하며 여전히 줄리아를 좋아하고 동경하는 줄리의 모습도 너무 좋았다. 씩씩한 캐릭터는 언제나 좋아.

감독/각본 등을 ’노라 애프론‘이 직접 했더라. 재능이 많은 사람이네. 각본 겸 감독을 맡는 사람들은 각본을 쓸 때 자신이 그려왔던 대로 영화를 제작할 수 있다는 장점이 있지 않을까 생각한다. 시나리오만 쓰는 이들은 제작으로 나아갈 때 많은 작업을 거치면서(배우를 캐스팅하거나, 세트장을 선정한다던가와 같이) 자신의 원래 뜻/의도도 많이 꺾일 텐데 감독까지 이어서 하는 사람들은 이런 데서 오는 실망감은 거의 없지 않을까. 어우, 그런데 난 죽어도 못해. 감독이란 직업도 몇 달, 몇 년이 걸릴지 모르는 촬영에 책임을 맡는 것인데 컴퓨터를 못 다루는 건 둘째 치고 그 체력과 인내심이 난 없다. 언젠가 영화 시나리오를 쓴다고 해도 난 시나리오만 쓸 거야(절레절레) 기계로 다루는 모든 작업은 노트북에 타이핑 하는 걸로 족하다.

어쨌든 잔잔하고(아마 대중 영화보다 소규모 관객을 대상으로 한 영화로 제작된 듯하다) OST도 좋았고 주인공들도 마음에 들었던 영화였다. 프랑스 요리를 배워볼까나!

아니, 근데 여담으로 텀블러에 올릴 수 있는 이미지 개수가 30개가 돼버렸네? 컴퓨터상으로는 원래부터 20장까지 올릴 수 있었다가(핸드폰으론 10장까지 올릴 수 있었음) 어느 순간 10장까지밖에 못 올린다고 해서 황당해했는데 다시 20장으로 돌아왔길래 ‘뭐여’ 하고 있었다. 그런데 텀블러 이용 5년 차인데도 30개까지 늘어난 건 처음 보네.

텀블러는 약간 이런 주의인 듯. 자기들이 먼저 실험을 거치지 않고 일단 해본 다음에 사용자들의 반응(‘왜 갑자기 이렇게 바뀌었어?!’/‘이 기능이 바뀐 건 조금 괜찮아졌는데?’ 같은)을 살피고 나서 바꾸는 듯. ‘시행 전 실험’을 현실에 적용하는 특이한. 자기들 마음대로인 게 웃기다가도 다른 SNS보다 비교적 광고도 적고 간단간단하게 게시물 올릴 수 있는 장점을 여전히 유지하는 게 유저(user)로선 아직도 마음에 든다.
