Messier than I expected 🫠

This was the scene of a crime.

Stains like blood all over my adolescence

and brutality layered in earth.

We tried so many times to bury the evidence,

hands filthy with my solitary grief.

A grave still too fresh to dig up.

I watch decay take hold,

Wait for these invented selves to suffocate within-

Unlock air too soon and they’ll breathe back to life.

Years begin to unfold behind me,

but I return to this rot like a relapse.

Time spent crawling closer to our confession:

If you and I had known how to love,

we wouldn’t have needed the shovels.

Raspberries taste like grandma’s house

and a place where the air went down smoother.

I still pour too much sugar over the bowl

and smash them against the roof of my mouth.

The good times stain me red.

The rest of the days were muted blues and grey

haze thick with silence.

You think the world owes you an apology

for creating recklessly,

but where are your hands in this?

Bandit crouching in berry bushes

and blaming the soil for their growth.

You cultivated that place

and the rest of us lived there-

swallowing hard and

waiting for sunlight to break through.

Above the fog, I’m finally tall enough to see it:

for you, the raspberries were a sour bite.
