I can't believe of all the magic gimmick episodes to make a mess of that BTVS managed to fuck up a time loop. A Buffy time loop episode should be the stuff of legend up there with The No Talky One and The Singy One but no. Life Serial time loop I'm sorry but you're nothing to me. Buffyverse magic is always vaguely defined and the rules change by the episode but the time loop spell Jonathan put on Buffy is so underexplained and overpowered that it severely takes me out of the scene
No one else in the shop but Buffy is aware that they're looping or time passing so is the spell just sending Buffy back in time and no one else? But then how can the Trio watch what's going on with the Magic Box cameras in real time with Buffy/the audience. Are they also looping? Does Jonathan's spell reset time for literally everyone except the three of them and Buffy? Because that means Jonathan, by means of magic bone, is repeatedly sending the entire world back a few minutes, keeping the memories of him, the other casters, and the target intact, until a completely arbitrary task decided by Jonathan is accomplished by Buffy.
Does that mean the awkward customer was part of the spell? Because satisfying an annoying customer was the task Jonathan set out for Buffy, did he just know that lady would be difficult? Did they just wait until a difficult customer showed up and bother Buffy to start the loop? What if none did? Is she a physical illusion or a magic homunculus being difficult under Jonathan's direction? Is she a real person playing out his script under mine control? Because unless it's the contrived coincidence option that's a lot of continuous magic to keep up while also maintaining the time loop, all with what seemed like a damn easy spell.
Why don't we know that spell? Casters' and target's memories unaffected, why didn't the gang cast it on Buffy before The Gift and make the loop breaking condition being defeating Glory without any Scoobies dying? We fail, oh well, try again. We know it doesn't need to be fixed on a room bc it covered the Magic Box and the Nerdmobile (even though trying to leave the shop just reset the loop for Buffy bc this spell just does fucking everything I guess). We know any damage done gets reset bc Buffy broke Giles' glasses and the doorbell and they were fine after a loop so no worries about racking up injuries or wasting the Dagon Sphere. And sure if Jonathan can do it, he of the only reasonably impressive abilities, then experienced Giles or Tara or especially Willow should have no problem whatsoever. And all this for one scene.
Life Serial time loop spell you are my enemy.

Big news today about "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" as the show teamed up with Audible to record a new story called "Slayers" that centered on Spike 20 years after the show ended and he's helping out a new teenage slayer Indria in LA pretending to be a villain again. While trying to find a watcher they get caught up exposing a multiverse and in a new reality were Cordelia became the slayer instead of Buffy and the big bad is Drucilla!!! :D The story was written by Amber Benson and Christopher Golden, and James Marsters, Chrisma Carpenter, Anthony Head, Juliet Landau, Emma Caulfield, Amber Benson, James Charles Leary, and Danny Strong are all back in their roles and newcomer Laya DeLeon Hayes voices Indria.
They're going to be at New York Comic Con next month too revealing more about this and makes me wonder if others will be in the story too that they'll announce there. This story does remind me a bit of some of my old "Buffy" novels that was a 4 part series that included Buffy being trapped in another universe and us seeing one on the show before too. Also curious if what happened in the comics also happened in this story as well and what they'll mention about the other characters, and if this gets a print version as some of Audible's stories have.
The story premiere's October 12th and their NYCC panel is the next day the 13th.

Recently watched the episode of Buffy where Jonathan becomes a mary sue and I unironically think it reflects really well on him as a character. Most people's hyper-idealized fantasy worlds would involve some amount of unethical actions or spiteful revenge against people who wronged them, but his just... doesn't. And like, the obvious thing to do with an episode premise like this and characters like these would be to have Buffy either immediately leave Riley for him or already be dating him in this reality, but instead he gives them heartfelt relationship advice that actually gets them out of a rough patch! And also he, y'know, willingly sacrificed his perfect world to save the Scooby Gang. I'm told in season 6 he becomes some sort of incel terrorist, and idk maybe it makes sense in context but to me that seems wildly out of character for the Jonathan we've seen so far.

obsessed with alternate universe ghost jonathan he’s so silly
the constant spooky ghost noises just for shits and giggles “WOOOUAOUAUHOOOO BEWAAAAAREEEEE OF JONATHANNNNNN”
the utter unfiltered horniness for everyone in sight (explicitly including spike btw. bisexual jonathan I love you forever)
the actual genuine confidence that he never had on the show because. he’s a ghost. who gives a fuck if you’re cool
he just says things like that’s it he literally just says things. wtf is he on about idk but I love it
idk man he’s just a little guy 10/10 character I love him dearly

I don't dislike Andrew's presence in season 7 of Buffy , but it would have made far more sense thematically and for their character arcs for his and Jonathan's role to be swapped and I think that was probably the original plan but the actor had scheduling issues or something. Andrew was the one that was loyal to Warren up until his death and was fully ready to become a grovelling and loyal servant to Jonathan after Warren died so it would have been more impactful to see him be the one who was met with the ultimate betrayal. Jonathan became disillusioned with Warren after he killed Katrina and it felt like a redemption arc was what they were building towards. He had an established relationship with Buffy prior to him joining the trio, giving Buffy more reason to care about his redemption and explore a broader range of emotions about it since there would be a sense of prior betrayal rather than just 'bad guy is nice now'. Anya's death was pointless and for shock value anyway but the words 'she died saving my life' would have had so much more weight to them coming from Jonathan's mouth because of his suicide attempt in season 3 (and then maybe people would actually remember her death). When Andrew comes back in angel, There's that scene where he says 'people can change' and comes out in an outfit very similar to Jonathan's outfit in 'Superstar' and it was a nice enough scene but again, the impact would have been stronger if it was Jonathan because we would have been seeing him put real work into genuinely becoming the version of himself that he once felt the need to use magic to convince people he was. I like Andrew well enough but there were so many moments where all I could think was 'I would care so much more if this were Jonathan'
.

When Katrina told Andrew and Jonathan that what they were doing was rape and they both looked shocked made me so angry. Not only did it show how much Warren was manipulating them but how immature and stupid they both were.
