While I prepare my asks’ answers, please have this self-indulgent doodle of the music department, when all was still well and Jack and Norman could bully Sammy in peace + some Thomas and Wally art, because I periodically forget that they hated each other and still had to see each other seven days a week.
Also Susie’s here.

Decided to refresh my knowledge of bendy protagonists personalities/quirks and i can say that i forget how distant canon Audrey is from fanon one sometimes
Here's relatively short list with Audrey character analysis+random tibbits (environmental/gameplay/voice lines)
(I'll appreciate if someone will interact+most of it is under the cut!)
1. Her workplace is an unorganized mess
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the right side: a couple of empty teacups, empty paper sheets, unopened envelope, books/notebooks, a toy ball and keys in the middle of the desk, storyboards that are UNRELATED to what she was working on;
On the left side: donut that she kept close to her elbow & storyboards while she was drawing + to-do list for a day
There's no WAY she'll be able to keep anything tidy. If you hc her and Bendy to have a familiar bond post game, she'll be as messy if not messier. Her home might be a wreck.
2. She easily distracts
- Audrey is working overtime and claims that she has "only eight hundred more frames to go" until the next deadline
But was she actually *actively* working?
She has unrelated items on her desk (listed above) and jumps on the first opportunity to get a coffee.
If she really did wanted to have a drink, she literally has a soda machine close to her office doors.
Tumblr media
Some brands of soda do have caffeine in them, right? Getting a coffee looks more like an excuse for a walk.
Bonus point: if you'll stay in her office without getting up (for 15 minutes), she'll acknowledge that she has no time to waste and will return to work instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- "Well, the coffee's good and all. But this work's gotta get done"
Worth to acknowledge: this girl has "employee of the month" award and some kind of animation award (boris statue) in her office .
Does she stays overtime everyday to finish something? Or other Archgate employees are even worse at their jobs, somehow?
3. She uses dry sarcasm or makes jokes a lot
Honestly, it happens really often and should be brought up in fan content more imo.
Due to the images limit i can't put a lot of examples with screnshoots but I'll quote some of them.
- "i think you and i have very different definitions of alright" (toward Allison)
Tumblr media
- "Looks like he's having a bad day" (about dead lost one with the gent pipe)
- "Ok! Yeah! And that totally makes sense" (reaction to an easter egg)
- "That's one leap of faith i definitely won't make" (about the pit in animation alley)
4. Audrey gets defensive when someone starts to talk over her or when she feels overwhelmed
Audrey either will deny what was said or will acknowledge it by being sarcastic
Prominent example of this is her reaction to Memory!Joey at the hotel:
- "Oh,now you knew my father. Well, newsflash! I didn't even knew my father...or my mother. Or anyone else in my family" (after Joey says that she has "adventurous spirit of her father")
- "What? Are you crazy?... Who do you think you are?" (after the reveal of her being created by the ink machine)
+ Similar behaviour can be seen in her short interaction with Twisted Alice (Susie).
Audrey prefers to keep conversation equal between both sides and when it fails to work, she'll either stay silent or will express frustration (which can be seen with her replying "no" to Twisted Alice and not saying anything afterwards)
5. She seems to trust Allison enough to be vulnerable around her
After leaving the spider lair, she'll try to reach to Allison through the speakers
Tumblr media
- "Alice? Are... you there?... Alice!"
She'll acknowledge that she feels scared and after Allison won't sound reassuring enough, Audrey's hand will be visibly shaking.
Allison is the only character Audrey has opened to; you'll never see her being that vulnerable with anyone else
(She is honest with Henry but not on this level)
It makes me wish they had more interactions; Allison for sure was really important in early development of the game.
6. She's blunt
Through the game Audrey is a type of person who says whatever is on her mind without hiding her intentions too much.
She's emotional and rarely thinks twice (most of her decisions are impulsive or sometimes irrational) which reflects on the way she talks.
It's often slips out through sarcasm when she gets defensive/tries to cope but it's also happens in relatively safe environment (for example, when she talks with Betty):
- "Are you...very old?" (Wilson's mansion, bedroom)
This one liner is the most random question you can say to a stranger; I doubt it was very well thought out from her side
7. Audrey easily trusts people which makes her easy to manipulate
I couldn't skip this one.
When Wilson has created a story about his "poor lost father" as a bait and Audrey did believed in this, there are multiple reasons for "why"
This either could come from her being "goodhearted" or the circumstances being used against her
- She went through whole "father trauma" in one day without being able to process anything & get proper answers:
An idea of "saving" another father (Nathan Arch) who she could've knew more than her own father (Nathan says in one tape that he meet young animators at least once) could've hit her really close to home
- Audrey never actually got a real answer on how to leave the cycle, teaming up with Wilson (who was able to enter and leave) could've looked like the only one way back
(I do acknowledge that writing in DR could've been better at places but if you do think about it in this way,it makes sense)
7.1. She is empathetic
I think that this part says everything for itself and it doesn't need to be explained. Thought, she's the one who decide if someone deserves it.
- She felt bad for hurting Bendy on accident & apologized when she was able to
- When she met Allison for the last time, she "gave" her this name, remembering that she doesn't like to be called 'Alice'
- At the end of the game she wants to try to make the cycle better for everyone.
Twisted Alice (Susie) was included which means that Audrey doesn't hold grudges against her (even with the latest one wanting to kill her previously)
8. Audrey puts her arm through an ink container without hesitation or any side thoughts
Tumblr media
IT IS a game mechanic and lore wise you can relate it to her being an ink creature
But honestly? It's in character for Audrey.
We're talking about someone who decided to go to great lengths to catch an aquarium fish (that's kept as a pet) and wanted to use it...for a recipe.
8.1. She doesn't mind eating out of trashcans
Tumblr media
If you think that wanting to use someone's pet for a recipe is too weird, you're actually wrong. But eating out of trashcan (when you have other options) may be.
Thought, she drives a line on a food that has flies or other insects on it (like "chocolate cake")...i guess in other cases, it's fine to her.
~~~~~~~
Trivial things:
- Bendy seems to be her favourite cartoon character.
She calls him "little guy" in prologue and keeps close to her storyboards where he's the main character:
Tumblr media
In the cycle, she acts joyful when she first stumbles upon the real deal.
- She loves chocolate donuts
- Audrey uses dark eyeshadows (can be seen only in prologue custscene. It's hard to notice at first)
- Her breakfast from to-do list are toasts
- She has abstract Bendy painting in her office
- It can be speculated that she's uncomfortable with being touched (or with someone being physically close), unless, she's the one who initiates it
so i’m playing batdr for the first time in over a year (it destroyed my old computer LOL) and i was listening to joey’s second studio tour audio and was excited to hear him say “you might even catch a glimpse of my song writing duo, sammy lawrence and jack fain” until he said something like “or our very own angel, sent from above, voice by ALLISON PENDLE” because he clearly taped over susie’s name in this warbled monotone voice
there must have been an entire department dedicated to removing susie campbell’s name from that company. my girl did not deserve any of that.
I have au idea fallen angel au
Note this dose not connect to the bible or the religion
In my au henry was a high ranking angel helping souls to heaven, a former human that died, joey a high ranking angel is a corrupt member of the heavenly court, so is susie she is working with joey in exchange for more power, they would take captured demons and execute them in a coliseum for their own enjoyment much to the horror of the other angels but they cant say or do anything about it because if they do they would become fallen angels and the decommissioning of a angel is gruesome and painful one day when a sinner is gonna be excuted by angelic army soilders henry couldnt stand this so he jumped in and saved him the demon was sammy lawrence and helped him escape susie jumped in with her soilders and arrested henry and joey sentenced him to be fallen henry shakled to the ground as susie took a golden bone saw and cut of henry's wings one by one it was agonizing for him since it was a slow process to cut through feathers, muscle, tendons and bone, they took henry's halo and shattered it
They unshackled him and they took henry and throw him inside a portal that takes him to hell or earth but henry fell 4,0000000 feet from heaven and he landed through pine trees and bushes getting pine needles imbedded into his wounds. He managed to survive a fall that would kill any human and the amount of blood he lost but he survived he disgused himself as a human he adapted to life on earth again like he was when he was human before his death he meets linda and they got married henry hid the fact he was angel for 4 years joey and susie soon began sending angels to earth to kill sinners which is going against the heavenly code so is misconduct of power linda died of a illness they had a daughter named evelyn and henry soon sees sammy again they can recognize each other in human form and just like with linda he hid that he was angel from his daughter evelyn to keep her safe Sammy knew he was angel and henry knew he was the demon he saved the two soon began dating
ink demonth day 4
WARNINGS: Threats, Body Horror, Horror, loss of limb, Forced Decision, Doppelganger, blood mention, decapitation mention, death mention
ao3 link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/49167892
Henry gets a choice cut. Heh. Heh heh. It'll cost him an arm and a leg. Haha.
The blood dripping in his rapidly twitching eyes was not the only reason for the tears that tracked down his ink smeared face.
His eyes darted like flies between the two brothers, who were bound back to back and were gagged together, their own wild eyes staring at Henry as they screamed behind rags. He knew that he could save neither, he was already well aware of that, but that monster wearing Joey’s Essence was giggling behind him, his hands firmly on Henry’s shoulders as he leaned over him.
“Come on, Stein, it’s not that hard of a choice,” the Doppelgänger beamed at him, teeth so white they hurt to look at. “You just have to pick whose arm and whose leg. You promised me when we got ‘em that they were worth that, so now they’ve got to pay up.”
“Joey, come on, this is- this is disgusting,” Henry choked out, trying not to think of Norman’s gurgling as he had been beheaded. Guillotined. Guillo-fricken-tined. It sickened him, and his stomach turned violently. “They’re- they’re so young, you don’t need to do this-”
“But I do, Henry!” Joey boomed, waving his arms like a prophet, a lunatic. “We need their donations, you see. We really do. Their flesh and blood in the machine- now, stop crying. It really is silly, Henry.”
“It’s not silly that I don’t want to cut off either of their arms or legs!” Henry screamed back, and choked as a hand tightened on his throat. Wally shouted hoarsely behind the gag, and Willy whined and whimpered as he sank against his brother, the buzz saws coming dangerously close already. Henry knew that if he did not make a choice, the saws would kill them both. Brutally. He stared at the False Joey, wondering where- who- the real one was. “Okay!” he wheezed through the iron grip on his throat. “Okay-”
The grasp on his neck tightened and then vanished, Joey leaning close with that false smile. Henry hated it, hated this man, wanting to be comforted and consoled, reminded of Norman’s execution once again, and his stomach dropped like Norman’s head had fallen into the ink.
“Wally’s arm,” he managed to gasp out. “Willy’s leg. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry….”
“Took you long enough!” Joey remarked, pulling two levers. The twins sagged against each other as the saws changed trajectory- they knew what was coming. They heard it clear as day, without even a panel of glass separating them from Henry and the Not-Joey. Wally gave Willy’s hand a squeeze, and then decided that it would be best not to hold on during the dismemberment. God, what a horror that would be for his brother. “Well, boys! The blood loss will conk you both out real good, and then you’ll wake up feeling better than ever!”
Henry wanted to kill him. Instead he was yanked up once again by the ink.
“Now if you excuse us, we’ve got more donations to collect.”
Theme 4: Open/Closed
"MUSIC MAN, KEEP IT CLOSED! DON'T LET US OUT!"
"SAMMY WES, PLEASE! OPEN IT UP! I CAN'T BREATHE!!"
Sammy, just awake after being drowned in ink himself, did exactly what his little Savior asked of him. Whoever this other voice was... He couldn't recognize it, but he knew it had hurt to hear him.
Tumblr media
Joey Drew. Lost in the ink he'd worked so hard to make. And reaching out to the friend he'd killed himself. What did you think would happen?
Ink demonth 2022 - Reflection
How does Joey deal with those who do not have his work capacity?
Chapter 13 : 1954
The day was not looking good, and had been since the morning. There had been further ink flooding down the Studio's stairs during the night, enough to delay the hiring of three departments. Joey had been wading through the ink all morning, catching up with a number of employees who thought they were going home, and trying to organise the work as best he could under the circumstances. No sooner had the problem been solved than Mr Cohen had stumbled into his office with a pile of invoices under his arm to tell him about the mounting debts. The perpetually worried accountant couldn't see beyond the numbers and spent his time boring Joey with the ups and downs of the Studio's budget. He'd hired him to deal with that sort of thing, for God's sake! Annoyed, he cut the interview short and went to the bathroom for a while.
He was washing his hands when the door opened behind his back, cutting off his brief respite. "Mr. Drew?" called someone Joey didn't recognize as he looked up to look in the mirror above the sinks.
"Himself," he replied dryly without bothering to turn around.
The young man took off his hat.
"I wanted to tell you in person. Mr. Meyer hung himself last night."
Joey pursed his lips, too annoyed to hold back the contempt he felt.
"Tsss. That's really bad news. I needed the animations from his part of the last movie today."
The other decomposed behind him.
"What...?
"He had responsibilities," Joey cut him off, looking down at his hands." I can't feel sorry for him when we're going to have to find someone to do his job for him."
"My brother is dead because of you!" the other Mr. Meyer suddenly shouted.
"I certainly didn't ask him to do anything so..."
"But you kept loading him with work, over and over again, demanding ever more beautiful designs in shorter and shorter time frames. Charles lived for his work. The stress had finally taken away his appetite and sleep, he was no longer himself..."
"He was the head of the animation department, so it's normal that his workload was heavy. I ask as much of the others, you know? And I work even harder myself."
"But my brother..."
"...showed a regrettable weakness. I should have put someone stronger in his position, indeed. We wouldn't have wasted so much time."
There was a brief silence and Joey looked up again to look at him through the mirror. The contempt and hatred that clouded his brown gaze didn't touch him for a second.
"I don't know how you manage to look yourself in the face," he dropped.
Joey glanced at himself. He held his own gaze without issue, before catching the eyes that were still shooting at him.
"Because no architect counts the bricks needed for his masterpiece. And they never cry when one of them breaks, Mr. Meyer."
That last thought seemed to be the last straw, and the young man dropped his hat to throw himself forward. Joey saw him move in the mirror, but only had time to raise a hand to shield his face before he grabbed him, turned him around and punched him. The blow, even if slightly deflected, sent a searing pain through his right cheekbone. Joey managed to grab him by the sleeve before he hit him again, and took the opportunity to lock his arm firmly against his chest, immobilising him just enough to bring their faces together and lean aggressively into him.
"You're in my house now, sir. Touch me again, and you'll suffer a fate far worse than your brother."
PREVIOUS
Joey saw the terror bloom on his face. Then he let go of him and the pallid young man stumbled and almost fell backwards in his haste to get away from him. The door slammed shut as he ran out of the toilet. Joey, unconcerned, took a moment to pull on the sleeves of his shirt and put his jacket back on properly. When he turned to the mirror to run a hand through his slicked-back hair, he saw the unhealthy red glow that had ignited in his eyes. It fluttered briefly, then faded. Satisfied, he smiled briefly to himself and went out.
NEXT
..........................................................................
I just wanted to make it clear that I definitely don't share Joey's shitty opinion on people committing suicide or on burnout. I know how difficult certain periods of life can be, and how stress and depression can make everyday life hell. So I'm taking advantage of this text to do a little prevention: don't let anything or anyone persuade you that the only solution is to end your life. If this thought comes to you, go quickly to find support from your loved ones or competent people (doctor, psychologist) to get help. Remember that there is nothing important enough to take away your well-being and your life: no job, no sport or hobby, no lover is worth it. Know that everything passes, everything begins again. So take care of yourself first, because you are and will always be the most important person to you :)
Joey Drew Switcharoo, chapter 2
Hey, everyone. I decided to make a little story (somewhat loosely) based on the “Joey Drew Switcharoo” AU, which the Sammy server came up with a while ago. It’s using my own versions of the characters. I hope you guys enjoy it.
---
“Alright,” Sammy began, exasperated. “we need to show Joey that what he’s doing isn’t okay. Any ideas, you two?” he asked to Buddy and Wally.
Buddy spoke up. “Well... I have an idea.”
“Good,” Sammy said. With that, Buddy dipped his hand into the cauldron, and his turn manipulating Joey’s dream began.
---
Joey woke up, face-down on an art department desk. He looked down at himself and saw freckled skin, long, skinny arms and big, bony hands. No dead giveaways, but given that he was in the art department, it was most likely that he was Buddy Lewek.
“Joey?” Abby’s voice called to him. “Take this down to the main office, please.” She handed him some paperwork.
Joey made his way down to administration, trying to grapple with the consequences of Buddy knowing magic. It wasn’t such a bad thing, he supposed. Buddy didn’t seem to be torturing him, and maybe now they could do a bit of innocent magic together, so long as he didn’t question what he’d just seen of Susie’s fate.
It was while Joey was passing by the infirmary when it happened: the ink demon burst out of the the infirmary and tackled him to the ground. It sniffed Joey’s face before taking off. Joey followed it at a run. If Buddy knew about the ink demon, he needed to know what he thought of it.
Screams filled the air. The ink demon had a woman in its grasp. Its teeth peeled back like a garage door opening, and Bendy swallowed her whole, pausing occasionally to crunch down on her, coating its teeth with red.
Joey ran away. In the halls, he passed an old man who was scrubbing ink from his arm. As he continued to run, he passed by the same old man, ink having turned his whole arm a glossy black and shooting black tendrils onto his chest. He passed him a third time and saw that the ink had overtaken his entire left side and had left him in agony.
Joey locked himself into a storage closet and slumped against the wall. Joey knew about ink infection, of course. And he didn’t fear the demon’s escape- he knew it would never happen. Still, this little refresher course on the possibilities and realities of his doings made his heart race and his hands tremble.
Buddy knows about the ink demon. Should I be worried? He probably needs the money too much to tell anyone, right? But how does he know about ink infection?
The door opened, and Joey, or rather, Buddy in his body, was standing in it.
“Joey? What are you doing in here? Get back to work.”
Joey stood up. “Sure thing, Mr. Lewek,” he said. It was so strange having to work when everything was going wrong and the person responsible wouldn’t even acknowledge it.
The rest of the hour was uneventful- just deliveries. He made sure to keep tabs on Buddy’s whereabouts, but Buddy barely left his office.
---
“Sorry I couldn’t make it last an hour,” Buddy said.
“No, that was good. I don’t think he takes the threat of the demon’s escape seriously enough,” Sammy reassured.
“Um... There’s a demon made of ink in the studio?” Grant inquired, looking at the others as though they’d lost their minds.
“Yep, get with the program,” Sammy replied. “Wally, it’s your turn.” Sammy’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t screw this up.”
---
Joey woke up slumped over in the janitor’s closet, mop in hand. He reached up, felt Wally’s baseball cap, and immediately knew who he was. The thought of Wally’s loud mouth spreading around everything he’d learned tonight was a scary one, but otherwise, this could be worse.
Upon exiting the closet, Joey was met with Wally, in Joey’s body, a smug smile on his face.
“Hey. A pipe burst, and you have t’mop it up. Follow me.”
Joey filled up a mop bucket and followed without a word to a corridor lined with broken ink pipes. Joey had begun to mop up the thick ink when a blob of it started moving.
“Make sure you get that,” Wally said before turning to leave.
Frustrated, Joey chased the ink blob down the corridor, dragging the mop bucket along with him. Eventually, he got to a forced turn, and slammed right into Thomas Connor.
“About time you got over here. We have eleven units of pipe to replace, and you’re going to do it, ‘cause frankly, it hurts my soul what we’re doing and if ah keep going much longer, I’m gonna punch a goddamn hole in the wall!”
Something in that phrasing and even the voice bothered Joey- that wasn’t how Tom spoke. Perhaps Wally wasn’t the best at recreating the speaking styles of others. At any rate, he didn’t need to stick around for the the guilt trip. “Sorry, Tommy, but I’m on orders from the boss to mop up all this ink first. I’ll be back as soon as I can.” He caught Thomas muttering something about a guilty conscience as he left.
With that, Joey continued on. As Joey chased the blob of ink, he ran into several other people, ranging from workers lamenting stained clothes and long hours to people crying over their positions being cut during downsizing. Everyone was either angry or hurt. The words, I gotta get out of here, appeared on the wall.
Finally, Joey got to Sammy’s office. Through the glass window, Joey saw Sammy talking with a violinist when the pipe burst. In seeming panic, he shoved the woman out of the way of the spraying ink, practically picking her up to get her out the door. Joey caught the words, “not safe in there,” before Sammy turned his attention to Joey. “Clean that up,” Sammy said curtly before moving his meeting elsewhere.
The ink pipe was still gushing, droplets of it hitting Joey’s face. The words, Am I disposable to them? Appeared on the wall. Joey put his mop in the bucket, wrung it out, and got cleaning.
---
Wally emerged.
“That was surprisingly good,” Sammy admitted before turning his attention to the cauldron. “Alright. I think we can convince him if I keep up the steam. Time for the finale.”
With that, he plunged in his hand.
---
Joey woke up, this time on what was unmistakably Sammy’s desk, with what was unmistakably Sammy’s hair flowing over his shoulders. He felt terrible. His head was aching. He was trembling despite not being cold. His face felt dirty, and he wiped it off, coming away with a hand stained with... ink. Ink that looked quite delicious. Unthinkingly, he licked it off like cake batter.
And then a feral urge overtook him. His desk was covered in ink bottles, some full, some empty, and his hands found one full vial after another until he’d drank four of them.
Ink infection. This’ll be a long hour.
Joey stood up groggily, his head pounding. A voice emanated from the pipe in the office wall. “You have not done your daily prayer,” it said, clear as if it had come from a person. It sounded only the slightest bit angry, but terribly convincing.
Joey stepped out of his office and found himself gravitating towards a Sammy’s sanctuary, as though in a dream. And then, the scene was dissembled and recreated.
Joey was in a torn-up version of his own normally-spotless apartment. Numerous empty wine bottles had been left on the floor, reminding Joey of the nights where he’d gotten drunk and lost control of himself in front of Sammy. A picture frame that he’d broken during a fight and since removed was hanging from the wall. There was the sound of a door opening, and a shadowy creature stepped through.
He’s being oblique about our relationship. Thank heavens. An hour or less with a nightmare creature was far, far preferable being outed.
The shadowy creature stepped towards Joey, and Joey fled to their bedroom, which could lock from the inside. Then, the scene was reassembled again.
He was in his own office. Joey- or rather, Sammy in his body- stepped in.
“Hello, there. I know you don’t want me to cure these symptoms, what with the Bendy thing and all, but I’d like to track this. Scientifically, you know. Let’s head down to the infirmary, shall we?”
Joey went down to the infirmary, where Doctor Hackenbush ran various tests on him, from taking his blood to testing his reflexes. In the pipe-filled infirmary, the voices were very loud, telling him to submit himself to Bendy and that all this was a part of a grand plan. It was louder than Hackenbush’s voice, which told him that his body was falling apart.
---
The fantasy finally ended, and Sammy came out of his trance.
“That’s it,” Allison explained. “The spell will die on its own if it isn’t touched for half an hour, and when it does, Joey will wake up.”
“What was that scene with the shadowy stuff in the middle?” Wally asked.
“Just some symbolism that what he’s doing this as a result of trauma. I don’t blame you for not understanding, but an artist like Joey will,” Sammy lied. Thankfully, Wally seemed to believe it.
Susie cut in. “Do you think this’ll convince him?”
“I don’t know. We’ll just have to hope.”
---
Joey finally woke up, this time on his own living room floor, and rushed to the bathroom to look in the mirror. He’d never been so happy to see his own face. He was going to need several old fashioneds to process what had just happened.
Once he was properly buzzed, Joey got to thinking. Everyone now knew everything that had been revealed, or could at least guess at it. Grant Cohen knew that the ink demon could escape and harm others at a moment’s notice. Joey’s precious little go-fer knew about the suffering of sentient ink creatures. Wally knew about ink infection.
Maybe I should provide him some masks for cleaning especially inky areas. It would be easy to do, and if that’s all it takes to make him feel like I care about his safety...
But not all his problems were that easily solved. They all knew about Susie. They’d all seen her pain. Even if she wasn’t there with them, out of her cage... what would they do now? Who might they tell?
Joey was left with a crushing sense of dread. It made him want to undo everything just to escape it. He already had protocols as to how to dispose of the machine and the creatures that came from it, should that become necessary. There was nothing to do but hope that didn’t happen, make little changes where he could, and stay alert for any sign of threat.
I like talking about bendy characters so it’s time to touch up topic of… Joey Drew himself
Tumblr media
Doing it before fade to black release on purpose :)
Here’s my analysis of his behaviour and on the illusion of living philosophy
It’s a huge read and I’ve enjoyed writing it!
(Continuation under the cut)
1. Joey’s family situation was hard on it’s own
Joey doesn’t talk about his parents way too much and mostly focuses on story elements (his father being a shoe maker and how his parents affected his childhood) rather than on his parents as their own people.
They weren’t rich and Joey talks about their family earning a “honest living” but at the same time, he describes how hard it was for his father.
“We weren’t rich. There was an honest living to be earned and Father did that with Mother keeping the books” (TIOL, page 18)
“I definitely saw her (mother) more than I saw Father, who sometimes would only appear briefly at the dinner table, hunched, brow furrowed, silently eating his meal. He’d disappear downstairs right after, and I’d help Mother with the washing up. (TIOL,page 18)
He comments on his father creating fake scenarios (elves helping him to work) to distract from hardship of needing to work a lot to be able to feed their family.
Joey has hard time of understanding ‘why’ he does that and how fantasy can help to work but he wants to believe. He tries to prove to himself that magic can be real.
"I didn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe it” (TIOL, page 19)
“I couldn’t see the elves. They must have been sitting on the table itself, hidden behind Father. I pushed the door open just a little bit and stood taller on my tiptoes.” (TIOL, page 21)
Joey switches between wanting to believe in illusions and not wanting to. He’s scared of not being perceived as normal by others.
He says that it’s not okay to be deep into the fantasy but notes on the fact that he can grasp the concept.
“I knew about make-believe. Played it all the time with my friends. But I didn’t know that adults knew about make-believe too. I nodded. (TIOL, page 23)
After he asks his father directly, he explains his reasoning and says that make-believe helps to feel less lonely (I’ll note on this part, it’ll come in handy later) which changes Joey’s perspective greatly:
"But the make-believe, the little characters, the songs, that changed his reality. What was reality except what we perceive it to be? Elves and magic? Well, why not? (TIOL, page 24)
It’s everything we’ve got to know about his family.
Hard working to earn money for living, using escapism to cope and distant from each other because of their struggles.
This distance likely has continued to grow with years, since for some reason he escaped his home when he was 15 y.o (+ signed up to army); no one seems to actually care and he was left on his own.
1.1 Stage name
Talking about Joey’s distance from his family, he doesn’t use his real family surname or full form of his name.
It’s not something that was explored a lot in Bendy (among all of its content) but we know that he doesn’t like to be referred this way.
'Joey’ was a nickname that he picked up for himself when he was 19 y.o.
"I’m Detective Adam Sinclair. You’re Joseph Drew.” “Joey,” I said. It was a new nickname I was trying out, ever since I moved to the Village. (TIOL, page 88)
Usually he’s referred as 'Joseph’ by his family members or people who are distant to him/don’t know him well.
But "Joey” is not the only one name he gave to himself.
'Drew’ doesn’t look like a real surname. He likely picked it up after getting close with Henry.
Imo Drew is a fun pun name that’s related to Joey owning the studio (and “Joey drew Studios” (literally) in the case of the cycle)
It has never sounded real.
Employees handbook mentions some “Dempsey” person who invests their own costs into the studio:
Tumblr media
(Receipts: Investor Deposit, J. Dempsey)
Their initials are “J.D.” which makes it’s obvious who they are.
Joey’s house also doesn’t look rich which would make sense if he put all his earnings into the studio itself.
Bendy devs like to pick names that fit characters & “Dempsey” means “arrogant person” which does fit Joey perfectly.
1.2 Joey is deeply ashamed of the way his family lived.
Everytime someone mentions anything he associates with his past (shoes, for example) he overthinks and creates imaginary conflicts with these people.
His negative thoughts about them take whole paragraphs of text; he tries to make himself believe that he doesn’t care about looking “less” in someone’s eyes. He looks for reasons why they're worse than him constantly.
"Probably trying to figure out my past, and that was none of his business. Then I told myself it didn’t matter because I didn’t care what he thought. I didn’t care much for him in general. He might have been richer than me at the time, but that’s where his superiority ended." ( TIOL, page 26)
He often downplays people because he's deeply insecure and is scared of being outcasted, especially by rich successful guys.
After doing so,he switches toward praising himself and names reasons for why he's better (classic Joey Drew behaviour)
He was a year younger than me, hadn’t fought, hadn’t signed up like I had, hadn’t lied about his age to fight for his country like I had. What could he say to an answer like that?Nothing. Absolutely nothing (TIOL, page 26)
Не believes that they need to feel sorry for this because they have no idea how much he struggled in the past.
2. He's insecure & scared of things he can't control
I could've continues this in previous paragraph but it's a bit different.
You see, while Joey was insecure of his past (things he associated with it acted as "triggers") he still was full of himself.
It was an act but it looked convincing enough; with time it became harder for him to keep it up.
It easily explains his behaviour in batim tapes.
When Joey tries to reassure everyone that he knows what's going on, he actually doesn't. He's as lost as everyone else, he tries to act only when he's forced to do so.
He lies to people and runs away from responsibility because he's scared of abruptness, something out of his control.
Joey shows fear of everything that's unknown to him but he tries to play it off somehow: he tries to be on top and be unpredictable to others.
He treats himself as a human that lives around unpredictable fictional characters that he can't control or read intentions of.
"My father though was a real person. I knew that deep down. But in this moment I saw him not as a son looking at his father but as a viewer looking at a fictional character." (TIOL, page 50)
It's mentioned in the novels that Joey likes theatre and he expresses his thoughts about it to Buddy in dctl.
Theatre operates in "cycles":
Actors play their parts→ the audience applaud→ actors bow→ performance ends→ performance begins and so on.
It's has a pattern and won't introduce anything that will caught you off guard. It's "safe" and as a part of audience,you don't need to perform, you only watch.
Does it remind you of batim's cycle? Outside of holding grudges toward Henry and wanting to run away from everything Joey has performed with GENT, he also searches for control while not being included directly.
HE decides what will happen to the cycle residents. HE writes the story that other people can barely affect. HE blames other people for studio's downfall and makes them suffer for his wrongdoings.
Joey knows that he has failed but he can't process it. He doesn't know what will happen and he's scared of being put into situations he can't predict.
It's really shows how insecure he became with years.
3. Why Henry is important?
Why exactly Joey couldn't replace one man he didn't knew for a really long time? What made Henry so special to him?
We don't get a big insist on their friendship but it can be said that their short-lived bond was strong or at least Joey believed that it was.
Henry seems to be Joey's role model of sort even if Joey doesn't want to acknowledge it.
Joey notes on how Henry changed the course of his life without knowing about this
Henry is a determinated man who went for a career in art because he knew what he wanted & he stayed on this path no matter how hard it was to get any recognition.
Henry's the man who makes decisions and acts when he needs to.
Meanwhile, Joey feels lost his whole life. He searches for answers,purpose or a place with a "soul".
Henry gave him new meaning for life. Creative path with endless possibilities that Joey could build from scratch.
Joey was heartbroken when Henry left, doesn't matter for hard he tries to act like he wasn't.
"His presence was helpful, I can happily admit, but his absence was even more so. Not having him at the studio ended up being one of the best things that could have happened to it" (TIOL, page 138)
For some time his life was revolving around Henry. He knew what to do and what will happen, Henry always pushed him to the right decisions.
He says so directly in batim chapter 5:
"The truth is, you were always so good at pushing, old friend... pushing me to do the right thing"
With loosing Henry, Joey lost his newly gained purpose in life. It wasn't something that he was able to figure out by himself & it made him blind to the road that lies ahead.
He's angry at Henry for being like "other people" that he hates. For leaving him behind when he's scared of being alone.
We don't know about Henry's perspective much but he strikes me as someone who would be supportive of Joey at first.
He made some of Joey's ideas real and left only after a breaking point.
3.1 "Cartoon family"
Joey is deeply attached to main JDS toons that he "mutually" owns with Henry.
Especially, it's noteciable with toon Bendy who was called his child on a couple of occasions:
"Bendy was Joey’s child, and he felt just as strongly about Bendy as I feel about my flesh-and-blood son" © Nathan Arch (TIOL, page 5)
"He was my very first creation—one could even call him my firstborn." (TIOL, page 12)
Joey not only sees Bendy as his child but he also relates to him.
He draws parallels between them both, calls bendy manifestation of "the illusion of living" and shows some of his mannerisms (as he says)
Joey wants to see himself as Bendy.
A character who's loved by kids and adults alike and who always has friends around.
"I tell people that Bendy is the perfect example of my philosophy." (TIOL, page 12)
"To know that I needed a creation so perfect, so accessible to so many people, that it would help me change the way the world saw itself." (TIOL, page 13)
In Joey's apartment the only one picture in frame that he owns is illustration/animation cell of toons drawn by 'Henry Stein':
They're depicted holding hands with Bendy being in the middle of both; it's portrays closeness between them and Bendy's importance in the picture
Tumblr media
But was it's actually signed up by Henry or Joey is the one who did it for himself?
We know from batim (and batdr notes) that Joey's signature is "your best pal" which makes this case...a bit complicated
Tumblr media
Joey could've wanted to pretend that Henry is still close to him and decided to sign up drawing with his name
Or possibly it was signed up by Henry somewhere in the past. In this case, Joey could've adopted Henry's signature as his own.
Both speculations have place to be real and we can't prove any of them.
Joey's known for pretending (which would fit with the 1st possibility) but he's also stuck in the past and stole a lot of ideas that belong to other people.
Imo it can be interpreted based on the way you see him.
4. Why was Susie fired?
Joey's obsessed with everything that is related to Bendy which can be seen with him being angry about "crooked bendy dolls" or bendy expression sheet in batim ch 2.
We can speculate that Susie Campbell wasn't fired from the role of Alice's voice actress for any valid reason BUT because Joey felt personally offended.
As Norman says in dctl, Alice Angel was really popular for a bit, which possibly could have been unacceptable for Joey.
Bendy is the main character Joey relates to and he wouldn't have wanted to be overshadowed in any way.
Susie being fired and humiliated (for not knowing that she was in fact fired) is the consequence of Joey's insecurity.
Susie claims that "she was absolutely perfect for the role" at first so at some point Joey completely changed his perspective.
Any character getting attention would be good for the studio. Firing a voice actress that helps to get this attention lacks logical reasoning.
After Joey "calms down" he has a conversation with Susie about 'an opportunity' he has for her. This opportunity is Susie being the first (speculated to) human sacrifice. He believed that she'd have been a perfect Alice.
Joey puts Bendy above Boris and Alice (like he does with himself & other people) so him acting pitiful about any other character getting popular does makes sense.
But he still cares about them...to some degree.
"Boris was special, Alice was complicated." (TIOL, page 154)
Joey having complicated feelings with Alice as character is really interesting and it's perfectly reflects what he was thinking about Susie.
She was a perfect voice actress to others but wasn't to him. He thought that she'll be a perfect Alice (after the ink machine was created) but she failed to be.
"She was beautiful. And loved by all. She was perfect...No matter what Joey says." (batim chapter 3, Susie talking about herself in 3rd person)
In dctl he claims that he relates failed experiments to "people not being real enough" or says that they weren't pure.
At the end, Joey basically has decided to pretend that she never was real
Susie is never mentioned in his memoir and she's almost fully erased from studio's history.
In Batdr's studio tour (music department part) "Susie Campbell" was replaced with "Allison Pendle"; meaning that Allison is officially the only one Alice Angel voice actress according to him.
5. The ink demon
It's one of the most interesting parts here and I'm sure that a lot of people have talked about him better that I'll.
The ink demon is a "product" of mistreatment, Joey's unhealthy projecting and capitalism (duh)
Joey saw Bendy as his son
He wanted to be like Bendy, someone who's loved and can always escape from troubles
One of reasons to bring Bendy to life is his marketability. Joey wanted "alive attractions" he can get money from.
The ink demon wasn't able to fullfil any expectations that Joey had.
He was passive and harmless (at first) but to Joey, he's not a cheerful toon that he has always dreamed about.
One of main issues that Joey has with him is that he's off-model:
"Listen Tommy, i know you boys over at Gent are doing your best but I'm paying for living attractions,not walking abominations. Whatever that grinning thing was i saw walking around your office,you better keep it up locked tight! Might scare off investors!..." (batim chapter 5)
"Grinning thing" and "walking abomination." The ink demon is completely dehumanised because he's not marketable.
As it was mentioned earlier, Joey sees Bendy as a perfect being and relates to him
He doesn't want to relate to the ink demon; for this reason, he separates them both.
Joey has hard time with accepting "failures". They either get forgotten, dumped or he tries to change them somehow.
The ink demon is a mistake that Joey and GENT have tried to "fix" for years. "A monster" that has shattered Joey's dreams.
5.1 The ink demon's sense of self
It's Joey character analysis so this point won't be too big.
The ink demon was treated like a mistake for being different:
Closed off, isolated, put in the cycle,tortured.
He was in the place where no one would care because he's not "a perfect bendy". Most of it comes from Joey or is related to him in some way.
Everyone saw him as a monster and he has accepted this role.
We know how it went in batim/batdr.
Worth to mention that unlike Joey, he has never lied in batdr. It's either harsh truth or projecting.
6. Ink Children
Allison was close to Joey and had a good impact on him,as he claims.
Indirectly, she made him want to have a family with the help of the ink machine.
I doubt that this decision has come from the place of jealousy toward Henry (who has a family) unless future content will somehow prove that I'm wrong. Joey can have one good intention while failing everywhere else.
Joey could've wanted to have a family to prove that there's still something good in him.
He was scared of dying alone and being forgotten.
"I hadn’t known that at the time. It gave me chills. The thought of success only after death, now that terrified me. That was not the plan and would never be the plan" (TIOL, page 122)
We don't know how many children have perished until the final, perfect one. And we can't claim what exactly has happened to them.
We don't get much details about the creation process of artificial "almost humans".
The only one we heard (outside of Audrey) is "AD" (name of the file) from batim chapter 5
"Tell me another one,uncle Joey..." ("AD" in batim post credits)
And sadly,you can't say much based on this.
They could've been physically unstable and die on their own terms
Tumblr media
(milk packages from Joey's kitchen table in batim chapter 5. All of them were stained with ink)
If they stained object with ink by interacting with them, it could've become worse with time.
Again,with lack of context,it's almost impossible to debate for or against this idea. Was that's a thing for other ink creatures?
Susie does brings up in batim that she was "a shapeless slug" at first.
Joey didn't changed much and dumped imperfect ones
Honestly this part depends on how much you believe that he could grow as a character.
Tumblr media
(memo from batdr, GENT building)
The way Joey talks about "other versions" sounds... indifferent.
Which is weird, because he did spend time with "AD" from batim by entertaining her with stories when she has asked him to
Does he tries to justify them being dumped OR he's distracting from the fact that they didn't had a chance to properly exist?
It feels like it was left for interpretation on purpose.
6.1 Audrey Drew
Second and last artificial child after "AD" that we canonically know about.
For Joey, creating something perfect that will outlive him could've been a key to his definition of immortality. He wanted to leave something after his death that people could know about. A piece of "perfect art"
"...Of course, I intend to live forever, so that will never happen! Ha, a joke indeed, but in a way not a joke, for what is art but a doorway into immortality? The greatest Illusion of Living then, living on after we are no longer alive. What is more of an illusion than that?" (TIOL, page 219)
Joey makes jokes about living eternally even before the ink machine's existence.
After it's creation, it's wasn't something that he has planned but he was ready for this fate (for one reason or another)
At the end of his life, Audrey has became a thing he'll live through eternally. And Memory!Joey is here ig
Memory!Joey basically calls Audrey his magnum opus:
"...My Greatest creation" (batdr, final Memory!Joey custscene)
Which further established that Joey is more proud of Audrey than he ever was on the Bendy franshise (it's hard to be proud of the stolen ideas, peoples deaths or the cycle,eh?)
Audrey seems to share adventurous spirit of young Joey (in his early 20s) & determination
They both got dragged into events they didn't asked for:
Joey (when he was 19 y.o) by detective Sinclair who has blamed him for a murder.
Audrey by Wilson Arch who has wanted to murder her.
6.2 Audrey and the ink demon
Similar trauma, different outcomes and treatment.
How present Joey was in Audrey's life? Why did they got separated at one point even before he has died?
Is there's something Memory!Joey hides from Audrey on purpose?
Batdr archives mention that Audrey has repressed her memories but what and why exactly?
In batdr the ink demon interacts a lot with Audrey which holds huge significance on the story.
In his first interaction with her he says "ink speaks to me and whispers your secrets" so the ink machine (who seems to hold some sense of identity) does know too.
The ink demon heavily relates to Audrey through the game. They were both left alone (in different ways) and they share one creator.
"You are without the purpose. Your very existence.. was a terrible lie...you're a mistake. A monster. Just like me." (batdr, the ink demon, last playable segment)
He heavily projects on her through this last interaction. Audrey does has a purpose,she was created to be a daughter Joey did wanted and loved. As much as Joey Drew could love at least, if you see this part as debatable.
But there's one thing he's right about, her existence is a lie.
Joey put burden of "protecting the cycle" on her while she thought that she's an orphan.
Batdr archives also question how much agency she has, which i find interesting.
7. "The illusion of living" (or TL;DR for this analysis)
The art of lying masterfully and manual on how to justice God complex.
Joey describes his life from early childhood (when he was 5 y.o.) and to the point of him being 42-43 y.o., a bit before the ink machine was created.
This book is about a man who couldn't find his purpose in life even with the help of other people and decided to blame everyone for this.
Lies, accusations, insults, distorted information, searching for "a soul" (literally and figuratively) and never ending hidden sadness after he lost Henry.
He tries to replace this empty gap with letting their creations become his whole life but it doesn't end well... (the ink demon,dead employees and the cycle)
He tries to separate himself from this and focused on creating a family.
Artificial daughters are electric boogalo №2 (unexpected direct sequel) which has ended working somehow.
But still,i wouldn't trust this man even a pet rock and the ink demon & Audrey are a proof on 'why.'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Trivial facts (bendy employees handbook/the illusion of living):
>He loves mac n cheese
>Joey meet Sammy at a theatre when they were teens
>Joey loves throwing peanuts at theatre actors
>In Joey Drew studios you can celebrate only main toons birthday or Joey's birthday. Other birthdays are prohibited.
>Joey stole award that Sammy has earned
> Joey officially is an employee of the month eternally...
> Joey stoles ideas for cartoons from employees and they don't get even a couple of cents for this (woah! How surprising /j)

Special thanks to everyone who interacted with my Audrey analysis earlier!

Joey’s Log #??:Untitled
[No associated audio available]
It hurts to speak. Hurts to eat. Hurts to do anything with my face, really. Hurts even when it’s perfectly still.
Feels like my skull is splitting apart. Like there is something inside my throat trying to escape by cracking me open like an egg.
It is agony. Dizzying, debilitating, agony.
It comes in surges, when I don’t move it. It will be tolerable, and then suddenly, pain so bad that all I can manage to do is keep from screaming. I have to keep from screaming. Because screaming will just make it worse.
I feel so weak. In part because of hunger, I’m sure. I am. So. Hungry. Haven’t been able to eat for several days now. I fear I’m starting to become a little delirious because of it.
The letters keep blurring while I type.
The weakness isn’t just because of hunger, though. I know that. I can tell. Deep in my bones, I can feel it. This is the INK’s doing.
I wonder if the others have felt this. This horrible pain. Would’ve been nice to have some warning, but I guess they didn’t want to tell me. Maybe they think it’s funny, to watch me writhe.
It will be over soon, I’m sure. It must be something big, if it’s taking this long and hurting this much.
I am so curious to see what.

Note
Do you think that items from chapter one that Joey had the employees place on those pedestals actually had any overall significance, they seem significant to me but i could definitely be wrong on that. or maybe it was just like opening a door, either an introduction for the employees to more cult beliefs or it was a necessary step in relation to the ink and/or Bendy.. I don't know honestly but I find it interesting and I like to think about it
I think it has something to do with Joey and tests of loyalty and doing things with out question for him.
Joey, from all we know about him, is a man that seems like he doesn’t like when his words or ideas are questioned. He hates having to explain himself (probably cause he’ll be caught is whatever bullshit he’s doing) and seems to do things sporadically and without reason as implied with some policies along with the really tight deadlines/finances. The first and only person I assume Joey consulted after Henry left was himself and whoever he decided was his replacement “Henry” at the time and even then I don’t believe he was consulting them more talking about and up what he was about to do.
The items served as that stepping stone to Joey’s belief that he truly owned the souls of his workers as he got them to essentially sacrifice an item for him with little to no real reasoning. It was a foot in the door to his weird requests and things he does. The employees got used to Joey demanding more of them, so when he eventually came asking for the whole of them, most just complied to get away from Joey’s weirdness, not realizing what they were giving up. Effectively the scenario were if you put a frog in a pot of water then boil it, the frog won’t realize the deadly temperature change until it’s way too late.
The idea that the items were not related to anything occult seems more sinister and in character as Joey wanted the properties of the ink and the machine hidden, so doing that for purely psychological and control reasons is a lot more likely. (and creepy)
Remember the tapes kinda go in order of the studios descent, so Wally mentioning the items in Chap 1 implies this was at the beginning of the whole ink occult bullshit.
