On September 1st 1863 the Angus poet Violet Jacob, author of “The Wild Geese” was born at the House of Dun near Montrose.
Her full name, take a deep breath, was Violet Augusta Mary Frederica Kennedy-Erskine, known for her novels of Scottish history and her poetry written in the rich dialect of Angus, Violet was born into an aristocratic family, and lived her adult life as an officer’s wife in England and abroad, the majority of her work however was from around Montrose, and Dun, the seat of her Family.
Perhaps here most famous work is the poem The Wild Geese a sad poem of longing for home, Violet is honoured at Makars Court just off the Lawnmarket, Royal mile with the line from the poem below “There’s muckle lyin’ ‘yont the Tay that’s mair to me nor life.”
Violet Jacob was described by a fellow Scottish poet Hugh MacDiarmid as “the most considerable of contemporary vernacular poets”.
She died of heart disease on 9th September 1946 and was buried beside her husband at the graveyard at Dun kirk.
There are many versions of this online but the best by far is by the late Dundee folk singer  Jim Reid, please if you are going to listen to and watch one wee video today, make it this one, it’s only 3 minutes of your day and it’s worth it just for the spoken intro, rarely will you hear an Angus accent so rich. The song isnae twa bad either.
Norlan’ Wind (The Wild Geese)
This sad poem of longing for home, by Angus poet Violet Jacob, was set to music and popularised by Angus singer and songmaker Jim Reid.
Oh tell me what was on your road, ye roarin’ norlan’ Wind, As ye cam’ blawin’ frae the land that’s niver frae my mind? My feet they traivel England, but I’m deein’ for the north. My man, I heard the siller tides rin up the Firth o Forth”
Aye, Wind, I ken them weel eneuch, and fine they fa’ and rise, And fain I’d feel the creepin’ mist on yonder shore that lies, But tell me, ere ye passed them by, what saw ye on the way? My man, I rocked the rovin’ gulls that sail abune the Tay.
But saw ye naething, leein’ Wind, afore ye cam’ to Fife? There’s muckle lyin’ ‘yont the Tay that’s mair to me nor life. My man, I swept the Angus braes ye ha’ena trod for years. O Wind, forgi’e a hameless loon that canna see for tears!
And far abune the Angus straths I saw the wild geese flee, A lang, lang skein o’ beatin’ wings wi’ their heids towards the sea, And aye their cryin’ voices trailed ahint them on the air – O Wind, hae maircy, haud yer whisht, for I daurna listen mair!
The lyric is a conversation between the poet and the North Wind.

temporary brief: limerick gallery of art trip
this Friday (25/11/2022) me, my peer group and others went to the limerick city gallery of art, to get ideas for our own projects.
there were three exhibitions currently running when we visited, "in seeing" by Marie foley, maire and Maurice foley collection, Jim Kemmy remembrance and Michael o conner poster collection 2022.
some pieces that i found related to my project, and my theme for temporary as a whole, were two pieces, called " Arthur's quay" by Charles mils (pic 1), and old thomond bridge, by Anonymous (pic 2)

I liked how these pieces reflected on what limerick used to be like during its past, and how it contrasts with what we know these places to be today and how they look compared to then. for more of my project i want to look at old maps and get more reference to medial times of limerick, so i like how these pieces are similar in themes to that.

I really like the colours and the composition of this piece, how the red of the fire/explosion contrast with the almost ghostly blue of the sky and moon. I also found the faces and emotions of the animals faces, specifically the horse of the main rider, to be really well done and crafted.
the final thing I found really visually interesting during this trip, was the poster exhibition. I really enjoyed how the posters were colourful, engaging and depicted aspects of the stories they were trying to sell, despite none of the posters themselves being in full English.

Limerick City Gallery of Art Trip - 25/11/22
Yesterday, as part of our project research, a group of us were taken to the Limerick City Gallery of Art. While there we took photos and sketches of any exhibits that caught our eye.
The first room that I found interesting was the 'Jim Kemmy Remembered' exhibition. This space contained works from the Permanent collection as chosen by Limerick-based artists. These Works stood outr to me as it was a fascinating look into local history.

The other room that compelled me was Michael O'Connor's poster collection. This space is filled with unique poster designs and styles gathered from countries all over Europe. These posters are mostly from the 1970s and 80s, an era before the digital age, meaning they were all done in print.

There were two posters in particular that caught my eye, so I sat down in the corner to create a quick sketch of each. Perhaps because they were in black and white, I got an uneasy feeling while looking at the poster for "L'auberge rouge".
On the left is a German poster for the 1951 movie "L'auberge rouge", (The Red Inn) designed by Hans Hillman. On the right is a German poster for the 1941 American film "The Shanghai Gesture".

I also sketched a painting I saw in The Maire and Maurice Foley collection. I found that this painting evoked a feeling of childhood and nostalgia.

Overall I enjoyed this visit, as it was my first time inside. I found myself drawn to works I usually wouldnt look twice at, I would definetly return again.

Kyle Hayes emailed: "I'm very excited that you're going to be at the highland games in TN. I went the first time when I was 12, back in 2001 or so. It's when I got hooked on bagpipes, celtic music etc. I even had plans to join the Nashville pipe band, but didn't have time due to other activies. Now I'm teaching English in Mexico City and found out in May that there are pipe bands here, so I'm taking lessons so I can join them. Surprisingly, the pipe band I'll be joining as large crowds when they perform; there are also a number of celtic bands here as well. Enjoy Tennessee, I wish I could be there!"

Summary : Bruce invited Selina, Maggie and Y/N for tea. But what he wants to talk about is everything but mundane. The young heir has something in mind which doesn‘t please Y/N that much.

DRÔLES DE DAMES
Si Jim Gordon venait à entrer au sein du manoir Wayne ce jour de mars, il illustrerait à la perfection l’expression “les bras m’en tombent”. Non pas parce qu’il aurait été secoué par la vision de Selina Kyle avachie dans le canapé en cuir hors de prix du jeune Wayne, à côté de celui-ci, non. Mais par les personnes assises en face de lui : Magnolia Blossom and Y/N. 
Plus encore, il aurait été sidéré par le calme absolu de son majordome, Alfred Pennyworth, sagement debout au milieu de leur drôle de petit comité, servant le thé comme il le ferait face à des gens respectables, occupés à paisiblement discuter et non à comploter un prochain mauvais coup. 
“Mesdames, merci d’avoir accepté de vous joindre à nous pour le thé”, remercia d’ailleurs l’homme en tendant une tasse à Maggie qu’elle accepta avec un sourire et un hochement de tête. “Je maintiens que c’était une mauvaise idée”, grommela Selina en croisant les bras et en posant une de ses bottes sur la table basse en acajou, récoltant un froncement de sourcil d’Alfred et un sourire indulgent de Bruce. 
“Vraiment, tu pourrais être un peu plus aimable avec la personne qui a sauvé ta vie et celle de Bruce au Gala du maire, chaton”, sermonna la voix éternellement plate de Y/N, qui pris également une tasse, la renifla suspicieusement, puis extirpa d’une de ses poches une fiole de liquide ambré qu’elle versa dedans sous l’oeil critique de Pennyworth. 
“J’espère qu’il s’agit d’un quelconque médicament et non d’alcool, Miss Y/N”, fit-il remarquer avec un air sombre, se voyant répondre une mine faussement choquée ainsi qu’une main outrée portée au coeur de la jeune femme. 
“Il s’agit d’un sirop, pour mes pauvres nerfs, vous devriez essayer Mister Carson. Je suis persuadée que cela ferait des miracles sur vôtre air sinistre. Peut-être même que cela vous ôterait l’énorme balais que vous avez dans le-...” Un coup de genou dans le sien l’empêcha de terminer sa phrase et elle se contenta de sourire de toutes ses dents. 
Même Selina ne pu s’empêcher de glousser en voyant la bouche ouverte de Bruce. Elle se rappela cependant la remarque de son aînée et se rembrunit. “Je ne parlais pas de l’invitation de Maggie. Est-ce qu’on doit s’attendre à voir débarquer l’autre psychopathe aussi, vu que vous êtes toujours collés ensemble ?” Demanda-t-elle en la fusillant du regard. 
“Je vous ai aussi sauvé la vie par extension, avec Victor, étant donné que nous avons tué le reste des hommes de Jérôme, ingrate”, fit remarquer l’assassin en sirotant son thé et en souriant narquoisement.
“L’autre psychopathe ?” Demanda Bruce en fronçant les sourcils. Maggie posa une main rassurante sur son genou par dessus la table. “Ne vous inquiétez pas jeune Bruce, Victor n’est pas en ville aujourd’hui.” Lui dit-elle. 
“Je ne sais pas ce qui me perturbe le plus, que tu connaisses son agenda ou qu’il t’aies suffit d’entendre psychopathe pour l’associer à mon partenaire.” Fit remarquer Y/N en soupirant. “Mais peu importe, peut-on cesser les ronds de jambes et en venir directement à la question la plus importante : que faisons-nous ici, Monsieur Wayne ?” 
Le jeune homme soupira à son tour et se frotta le front, en effet. Son invitation aux trois jeunes femmes n’avait pas été envoyée par simple courtoisie. “Très bien, je vais parler sans détour. Que savez-vous de la Cour des Hiboux ?” Questionna-t-il d’une voix grave. Selina ne broncha pas, visiblement déjà au courant de ses intentions. Maggie cligna des yeux clairement confuse, “Pardon ?” 
Mais les yeux de l’héritier Wayne, comme ceux de sa jeune comparse étaient braqués sur l’autre femme de la pièce, occupée à boire son thé sans même prendre la peine de feindre de l’intérêt pour sa question. Il posa ses avant bras sur ses cuisses et croisa les mains devant son visage, attendant la manifestation de la moindre émotion sur le visage terriblement neutre en face de lui.
Finalement, l’assassin reposa sa tasse dans un tintement et daigna ouvrir ses yeux perçants pour les braquer dans ceux de Bruce. “Meilleure question, Monsieur Wayne. Pourquoi vous intéressez-vous à la Cour ? Avez-vous une soudaine envie de mourir ? Si tel est le cas il vous suffisait de demander.” 
Sa remarqua lui valu une arme braquée directement sur sa tempe par le majordome. “Alfred !” Appela Wayne paniqué en levant une main pour lui faire baisser son arme. 
Y/N ne le regarda même pas, se contentant de croiser les jambes délicatement et de se pencher pour reprendre sa tasse. “Une information pour une information, Monsieur Wayne. Simple transaction, étant donné que votre invitation n’était pas innocente.” 
Elle regarda enfin le majordome droit dans les yeux. “Trois, deux, un... bang.” Sans réaction de sa part, elle pencha la tête de côté. “Non ? Alors rangez ça, je vous prie, avant de réveiller votre sciatique.” 
Au lieu de s’exécuter, il raffermit sa prise sur l’arme et alla même jusqu’à ôter la sécurité. “Mon maître vous a posé une question, Miss Y/N, et je ne baisserai pas mon arme avant d’être sûr que vous ne travaillez pas pour ces fous furieux, vous en seriez capable aux vues de votre CV”, siffla-t-il en contractant sa mâchoire de colère. 
“Alfred ! Baissez immédiatement votre ar-...!” Il n’eu pas le temps de finir, le reste de la tasse de l’assassin fut balancé sur le visage du majordome, l’alcool lui brulant les yeux et le faisant grogner de douleur. Son bras tenant l’arme fut attrapé au poignet et soulevé au plafond, puis tordu pour le désarmer. Enfin, un coup de pied derrière ses genoux le força à tomber au sol. 
Le tout s’était produit en quelques secondes. Choquant leur petite assemblée. “Y/N!” Cria Maggie en se levant et en attrapant l’arme avant la jeune femme qui haussa un sourcil agacé. “Sérieusement petite ?” La fleuriste recula pour être hors de sa portée. “Lâchez-le Y/N!” Ordonna Bruce en même temps que Selina se levait pour sauter sur elle. 
“Je ne suis pas adepte du meurtre d’enfants, chaton. Assieds-toi. Tout de suite.”, Ordonna son aînée d’une voix dangereusement calme qui cependant suffit à convaincre Kyle qui s’exécuta sous l’oeil tendu de Bruce. 
“Je ne vais rien faire à ton majordome, il m’est sympathique. Je ne travaille pas non plus pour la Cour. Je fais simplement un échange de bons procédés.” Expliqua-t-elle en relâchant doucement Alfred et en lui tendant une main qu’il saisit à contrecoeur pour l’aider à se relever. 
“On est un peu rouillé, Monsieur l’ex-soldat de la reine ?” Se moqua en français l’assassin. “Immobilisé et par une française, double affront.” Continua-t-elle encore mais en l’époussetant amicalement. “Là, là. Comme neuf.” Ajouta-t-elle. 
“Qu’avez-vous à gagner à connaître mes motivations ?” Demanda Bruce en se détendant légèrement. Elle haussa une épaule. “Assouvir ma curiosité ?” Répondit-elle avec légèreté. “Les informations sont aussi précieuses que de l’argent Bruce”, pointa Maggie avec bienveillance, récoltant un roulement d’yeux de Y/N. Et un hochement de tête du jeune homme qui semblait enfin comprendre. 
“Ils sont responsables de la mort de mes parents. Ils semblent aussi partout dans Gotham. Comme une ombre, mêlés à tous les trafics mais sans jamais directement s’y impliquer.” Souffla-t-il en fronçant les sourcils avant de regarder à nouveau l’assassin qui se rassit. 
“La Cour des Hiboux et ses membres sont Gotham, Monsieur Wayne. Ils sont à l’heure actuelle les maîtres absolus de la ville. Cela ne m’étonnerait que peu qu’ils soient déjà au courant de votre tentative de vous renseigner sur eux.” Indiqua-t-elle en se relevant brutalement pour regarder aux quatre coins de la pièce. “Vous avez fouillé le salon avant de nous faire venir ?” 
Alfred hocha la tête, “aucune caméra ou micro ici Miss Y/N. J’ai revérifié.” Elle se tourna vers lui et l’imita avant de revenir vers le fauteuil et de tirer de son manteau un petit appareil qu’elle lui tendit. “C’est un brouilleur.” Expliqua-t-elle. “On est jamais trop prudents”, ajouta-t-elle malicieusement sous l’oeil navré de Maggie et de Selina. 
“Tu ne serais pas un peu paranoïaque ? Ferme aussi les rideaux quand tu y es”, Se moqua la plus jeune, récoltant un regard désapprobateur de la fleuriste. “Et augmenter leurs soupçons ? Ne t’y trompes pas Selina, ils savent que nous sommes ici. La pire des choses seraient qu’ils se rendent compte que nous savons qu’ils savent.”, Expliqua Y/N. 
“Puisque vous venez gracieusement de nous coller une cible dans le dos, pourrais-je savoir ce que vous avez découvert d’autre sur eux, ou ce que vous prévoyez de faire ?” Soupira-t-elle. Bruce baissa légèrement la tête, se sentant probablement coupable. 
“Nous avons découvert l’existence d’une arme qui pourrait potentiellement les détruire. L’ennui est qu’elle se trouve dans un bâtiment lourdement gardé. Nous comptions la leur dérober.” Expliqua-t-il. 
“Oh. Rien que ça ?” Ricana l’assassin en s’étirant. 
“Que venons-nous faire là dedans Bruce, vous vous doutiez que je ne connaissais pas La Cour étant donné que je ne viens pas de Gotham...”, pointa Maggie tout à coup sérieuse. Le jeune homme grimaça mais confirma ses soupçons d’un hochement de tête. Selina le devança cependant pour répondre. 
“Le bâtiment est situé non loin de votre magasin de fleurs, nous voulions vous demander de laisser Alfred y rester le temps que Bruce et moi entrions à l’intérieur et que je puisse passer au-dessus de leur système de sécurité.” Eclaira-t-elle. 
“Loin de moi l’idée de tuer dans l’oeuf un aussi beau plan, les enfants, mais il y a un monde entre voler à la tire dans la rue ou se battre avec les petits mafieux locaux et braquer la plus grosse organisation de la ville.”, Fit remarquer Y/N en se regardant pensivement les ongles, se voyant répondre un claquement de langue irrité de Kyle. “Si tu penses pouvoir mieux faire, alors fais-le !” Cria-t-elle en la pointant du doigt. 
“Range ça avant que je le coupe.” Rétorqua fermement l’autre femme qui soupira. “Quant à attaquer la Cour, je ne suis pas assez stupide pour me braquer une arme sur le front toute seule. Je n’ai aucun intérêt à me retrouver dans leur viseur, ni l’énergie de me battre contre eux pour que le bien triomphe”, rétorqua-t-elle. 
“Je n’ai pas non plus la force logistique pour foncer tête baissée contre une organisation aussi tentaculaire, et vous non plus d’ailleurs. Avez-vous au moins réfléchit à l’après ? Où irez vous lorsque vous aurez une arme susceptible de les détruire, parce que dans le vrai monde, lorsque quelqu’un possède cela, on le dégomme. On n’attend pas qu’il joue son coup en premier.” Les sermonna Y/N. 
“Cela me tue de le dire, mais elle a raison”, reconnu Alfred. “Il nous faut prévoir tout ceci maître Bruce. Vous ne pouvez pas foncer tête baissée, pas cette fois.” 
Le jeune homme se prit la tête entre ses mains et soupira sous l’oeil critique de Maggie. “Rien de ce que nous dirons ne vous fera changer d’avis, je me trompe ?” Souffla-t-elle en se baissant à sa hauteur. C’était plus fort qu’elle, cet enfant l’attendrissait profondément. Son enfance si sombre lui rappelait à quelque part la sienne. “Non, rien.” Confirma le jeune Wayne. 
La fleuriste ferma douloureusement les yeux mais hocha la tête. “Vous pouvez utiliser le magasin, je peux aussi vous laisser les clés de mon appartement, je n’y loge pas actuellement”, proposa-t-elle. Bruce releva son visage et l’étudia une seconde avant de lui sourire légèrement. “Merci, votre aide est bienvenue.” Accepta-t-il. 
Il regarda ensuite Y/N qui le scrutait également depuis son siège avec son regard si calculateur. “Miss Y/N, j’ai compris que vous ne nous accompagnerez pas.” Dit-il. Elle confirma d’un hochement de tête. “Navrée jeune Wayne, mais même si je le voulais, cela irait contre mes intérêt. Et Selina a du vous expliquer la règle numéro un de la survie ici, à Gotham.” 
L’hériter hocha également la tête, “toujours penser d’abord à soi.” “Exactement. Je ne rentrerai pas frontalement en conflit avec eux. Cependant, je peux vous fournir de quoi communiquer à distance avec Monsieur Pennyworth et un ordinateur sécurisé avec un code pour pirater leur base informatique.” Proposa-t-elle. 
“Qu’est-ce que tu y gagnerais ?” Demanda prudemment Selina en la fusillant du regard et récoltant un sourire carnassier. “La survie de mon animal de compagnie. Vu qu’elle n’a aucun instinct de survie en vous offrant l’asile dans son magasin, ce qui permettra à la Cour de remonter jusqu’à elle en une seconde, je peux vous donner de quoi les ralentir puis les voir venir. Par extension ils remonteront de toutes façons jusqu’à moi via cette adorable idiote et voudront me punir, alors autant les titiller un peu”, détailla-t-elle en la pointant du doigt et en récoltant un “hé !” Outré à la mention d’”idiote”. 
“Il ne sauront jamais que l’ordinateur est à moi, juste que je connais leur existence, je devrais pouvoir arriver à manoeuvrer au milieu de leurs remontrances armées. Idem pour toi Maggie, tu devras jouer l’adorable idiote altruiste. Ils se focaliseront de toutes manières sur Wayne et compagnie et nous donneront le temps de nous mettre au vert.” Poursuivit-elle. 
Elle se rembrunit légèrement et soupira. “Vous venez de nous fourrer dans un beau pétrin, Monsieur Wayne. Entendons-nous bien, si nous sortons de ce bourbier en vie, vous nous devrez une fière chandelle. Et n’en doutez pas, je trouverai comment l’utiliser. En avez vous conscience ?” 
Elle ignora le regard noir d’Alfred, écrasant de tout son charisme le jeune homme qui réfléchit une longue minute avant d’hocher la tête et de tendre la main entre eux. “J’en ai conscience. Marché conclu ?” Elle cligna des yeux une fois avant de lui serrer la main. “Marché conclu”.

“Êtes-vous sûr de vous maître Bruce, faire un tel marché avec Miss Maggie, passe encore. Elle semble plutôt intègre, pour une personne gravitant autour d’une des assassins les plus prolifiques de la ville. Mais avec Miss Y/N... cela n’augure rien de bon, il s’agirait presque de pactiser avec le diable”, pointa Alfred à côté du jeune homme posté à la fenêtre et occupé à regarder la voiture de Maggie et Y/N rouler hors de sa propriété. 
“Je ne sais pas, Alfred.” Avoua le jeune homme. “Miss Y/N n’était pas obligée d’accepter. Mais elle l’a quand même fait, sans doute par intérêt personnel, mais elle n’était pas obligée de nous conseiller sur la nécessité de nous cacher après avoir volé ce que cache la Cour... Et elle m’a également prévenu du poids de la promesse que je me suis engagé à tenir”, poursuivit-il. “Je reste persuadé qu’il y a du bon en elle, quelque part. Comme lorsqu’elle m’a aidé à récupérer les données de Wayne Enterprises.” 
Le Majordome resta longuement silencieux après cette remarque. “Peut-être en effet. J’espère juste que vous n’aurez pas à regretter votre promesse. Vous avez vraiment le don de vous entourer de drôles de dames...”

“Cela ne te ressemble pas d’accepter un marché où tu as plus à perdre qu’à gagner”, fit remarquer d’une voix neutre Maggie depuis le siège passager de la voiture conduite par Y/N. “Le jeune Bruce aurait-il réussi à jouer sur ta corde sensible ?” Ajouta-t-elle malicieusement. 
Le reniflement amusé qui retentit à côté d’elle lui fit perdre son sourire. “Laisse moi deviner, tu avais une idée derrière la tête. Tu en as toujours une.” Soupira la fleuriste en croisant les bras de contrariété. “J’ai simplement fait d’une pierre deux coups.” Répondit amusée l’assassin. 
“Ce qui signifie ?” Demanda la plus jeune excédée. “Je nous libère de la surveillance de Mario Falcone 24h sur 24 avec Victor et je fais un investissement à long terme sur le futur homme le plus puissant de la ville. Je ne sais pas comment le jeune Wayne évoluera à l’âge adulte, mais je sais d’avance qu’il regrettera avoir jamais accepté de me devoir une faveur”, expliqua Y/N avec un rictus un peu cruel qui fit soupirer derechef Maggie. 
“J’aurais dû m’en douter.”, Bouda-t-elle avant de sursauter lorsqu’un téléphone fut jeté sur ses genoux. “Appelle Vic, je te laisse lui expliquer comment tu nous a fourré dans un terrible guêpier et comment je nous en ai héroïquement tiré. Accroche toi, parce qu’on est suivi.” Dit-elle avant d’écraser l’accélérateur et de braquer violemment le volant à gauche. 
“Où est-ce que tu nous emmènes ?!” Paniqua la jeune femme en regardant dans le rétroviseur la berline noire qui les suivait effectivement depuis cinq bonnes minutes. “Prendre un train”, répondit calmement la conductrice mais avec un sourire beaucoup trop large pour être honnête. “Tu as vu la rediffusion de Fast and Furious?” Ajouta-t-elle. “OH NON ! NON ! NON ! NON ! Fais moi descendre Y/N !”

On September 1st 1863 the Angus poet Violet Jacob, author of “The Wild Geese” was born at the House of Dun near Montrose.
Her full name, take a deep breath, was Violet Augusta Mary Frederica Kennedy-Erskine, known for her novels of Scottish history and her poetry written in the rich dialect of Angus, Violet was born into an aristocratic family, and lived her adult life as an officer’s wife in England and abroad, the majority of her work however was from around Montrose, and Dun, the seat of her Family.
Perhaps here most famous work is the poem The Wild Geese a sad poem of longing for home, Violet is honoured at Makars Court just off the Lawnmarket, Royal mile with the line from the poem below “There’s muckle lyin’ ‘yont the Tay that’s mair to me nor life.”
Violet Jacob was described by a fellow Scottish poet Hugh MacDiarmid as "the most considerable of contemporary vernacular poets".
She died of heart disease on 9th September 1946 and was buried beside her husband at the graveyard at Dun kirk.
There are many versions of this online but the best by far is by the late Dundee folk singer  Jim Reid, please if you are going to listen to and watch one wee video today, make it this one, it’s only 3 minutes of your day and it’s worth it just for the spoken intro, rarely will you hear an Angus accent so rich. The song isnae twa bad either.
Norlan’ Wind (The Wild Geese) 
This sad poem of longing for home, by Angus poet Violet Jacob, was set to music and popularised by Angus singer and songmaker Jim Reid.

Les participants à ce voyage étaient d’avance tous convaincus que Gush Katif ne serait pas évacué et épousaient la cause des colons.”Cela fait vingt ans que l’on nous pose la même question et vingt ans que l’on répond venez l’année prochaine”.
À la conférence de presse donnée par le maire de Neve Dequalin, même le chauffeur du bus a posé une question!

Voyage de propagande dans un bus blindé, qui, au dernier arrêt est parti sans m’attendre. Jim Hollander, présent sur ces lieux, m’a ramené. J’ai fini la soirée en dînant chez lui et Rina. Très sympa. Nous nous connaissons depuis très longtemps, mais je n’avais pas vu Rina depuis une bonne quinzaine d’années. J’ai Alon Reininger, le « Ché Guevara » d’Israël (il vit à L.A) au téléphone chez Rina. Il me casse les pieds comme il sait si bien le faire sur Sygma (agence que j’ai quitté fin 1987 !), et toutes les images perdues par mon ancienne agence (pour laquelle il n’a jamais travaillé) . Il finit par me raccrocher le téléphone au nez.
Sur la photo d’aujourd’hui, une femme colon dans sa serre répond aux questions des visiteurs sympathisants. L’homme avec un micro est l’un des rares journalistes du groupe.

O curador americano Robert Gumbo, responsável pelo legado do fotógrafo húngaro André Kertész (1894-1985) e também seu editor, diz que o mesmo acreditava que suas imagens eram autobiográficas, expressando sempre seus sentimentos, "uma espécie de diário de sua vida." Sua relação afetiva com Elizabeth Kertész, com quem se casou em 1933 após um outro curto matrimônio quando este chegou a França em 1920 (o qual era raramente mencionado) ocupou parte relevante em sua obra.
Especialmente em seus últimos anos de vida, após a morte da mulher em 1977, este relacionamento foi representado em uma série de fotografias instantâneas geradas por uma Polaroid SX70, uma câmera SLR criada em 1972 e fabricada até 1977, a primeira da Polaroid Land a expelir a imagem automaticamente sem mais operações (processo conhecido como peel-off), com uma objetiva de boa qualidade de 116mm e abertura máxima f/8.0. Sem dúvida uma revolução na época e cultuada até hoje.

Uma seleção de 64 destas polaroids, feitas entre 1974 e 1984, estão reproduzidas no livro André Kertész  the Polaroids (Norton, 2007), editadas pela galerista Kim Bourus, o diretor de cinema Jim Mairs e o próprio Robert Gumbo, que coordena as imagens deixadas pelo fotógrafo. É uma pequena edição hard cover de 19X16cm  impressa pela icônica gráfica italiana Mondadori, de Verona, com reproducões que se aproximam em escala do formato original da SX70 ( 8cm X 8cm na área de mancha mais o suporte no total de 9X11 cm)
Para os franceses Michel Frizot, historiador e teórico e Anne-Laure Wanaverbecq (1953-2017) historiadora especialista na fotografia húngara no período entre as duas grandes guerras, André Kertész (1894-1985) é um daqueles fotógrafos que forjaram a modernidade na vanguarda européia da década de 1920. No livro Kertész ( Ed.Hazan 2010) escrito pela dupla, a opinião é que ele manteve em toda a sua vida "independência e uma singularidade de elaboração de uma "poesia fotográfica" que o torna quase marginal. Suas fotografias não são observações de qualquer evento, mas notas pessoais, que refletem seu humores."

A carreira de Kertész (Budapeste 1914-1925, Paris 1925-1936, Nova York 1936-1985), segundo os historiadores, mostram duas peculiaridades de sua produção que são objeto de tratamento especial, as chamadas  Distorções (1932) e as Polaroids (1974-1984). A primeira foi publicada no antológico livro Distortions (Randon House, 1976) e esta última no livro From My Window (NYGS, 1981) que traz pela primeira vez seus polaroids, muito deles objetos de cristal fotografados do peitoril da sua janela tendo como fundo a cidade, também publicados neste André Kertész The Polaroids, de 2007.
Robert Gumbo recorda que em 1976 os Estados Unidos  estavam celebrando o bicentenário de sua declaração de independência e saindo desgastado da guerra com o Vietnã com escândalos como o Watergate que levariam seu presidente Richard Nixon (1913-1994) a renunciar. A partir deste ano, finalmente, desde a chegada de Kertész ao país em 1936, depois de uma celebrada carreira na França, as coisas começavam a melhorar para o fotógrafo que já estava com 82 anos. Finalmente a América o reconhecia como um dos autores seminais, com exposições nos museus do país e mundo afora e publicava seu livro André Kertész: Sixty Years of Photography (Penguin, 1978).
Apesar de prestigiado na França e chegar no bom momento com lançamentos de grandes publicações americanas (o primeiro número da Life Magazine é de novembro de 1936) seu trabalho foi mal interpretado e ignorado, continuando assim por algumas décadas, embora, como diz o curador, neste período, ele tenha produzido muitas de suas obra primas, como o seu livro A day in Paris (J.J.Augustin, 1945) cuja edição original é hoje cotada a quase US$ 3 mil. Seu projeto gráfico foi criado pelo genial designer russo e diretor de arte Alexey Brodovitch (1898-1971).

Em 1947 Kertész, ainda frustrado, aceitou trabalhar para revista House & Garden, do grupo Condé Nast, fotografando as casas de celebridades. Sem dúvida, uma posição muito abaixo de sua maestria, ficando lá por 15 anos. O trabalho não lhe rendeu mais que a obscuridade, mas dava para os seus gastos, disse ele. Deprimido chegou a dizer ao seu amigo de tempos franceses, o genial fotógrafo húngaro Brassaï (1889-1984), que era um "homem morto". Por outro lado, Elizabeth Kertész tornou-se uma mulher de negócios criando uma indústria de cosméticos que ascendeu no pós guerra, o que dava ao casal uma vida confortável, com direito a um apartamento na Two Fifth Avenue de Nova York com vista para o Washington Park e uma casa de veraneio em Connecticut.
Aos 68 anos Kertész finalmente largou o emprego na revista buscando publicar mais livros e fazer exposições, tendo como conselheira para seus projetos a própria mulher. Na mudança, em 1963, expôs na Bibliothéque Nationale de France, voltando triunfante a cidade que havia dado crédito a sua arte. No retorno aos Estados Unidos trouxe uma série de negativos e cópias que permitiram rever sua carreira e simultaneamente pensar como se preparar para o futuro. Seu turning point aconteceu no ano seguinte com o convite do recém empossado curador do Museum of Modern Art ( MoMA) de Nova York o historiador, crítico e fotógrafo americano John Szarkovski (1925-2007) que organizou sua mostra André Kertész Photographer, acompanhada de um pequeno catálogo, mas sua primeira publicação de um museu importante.
No livro, Szarkovski - figura chave na história da fotografia mundial, que lançou inúmeros grandes autores- escreveu que em 1925, Kertész convenceu a família que seria fotógrafo indo para Paris, a capital mundial da arte. Quando deixou a Hungria, ele não tinha nenhum conhecimento formal da arte a não ser horas debruçado sobre as revistas ilustradas húngaras e alemãs do tio, muito menos conhecia os grandes fotógrafos contemporâneos ou seus predecessores em seu país. Nem ouvira falar dos outros nomes que já eram notados como os americanos Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) ou Man Ray (1890-1976). E o francês Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) só iria começar a entrar para história 4 anos depois.

No entanto, diz Szarkovski, a essência de seu estilo já estava se formando. Era "caracterizada, acima de tudo, pelo olhar sobre a importância do trivial. Suas distorções traziam bom humor; seus padrões simples criavam uma ambiguidade espacial e além disso ele tinha uma intuitiva compreensão do realismo da câmera, de sua capacidade de aprisionar o detalhe revelador, a textura convincente, o clima do momento."
Em meados dos anos 1970 também começaran a surgir os Departamentos de Fotografia nas universidades americanas e os lançamentos dos seus livros tornavam acessível seu trabalho a uma nova geração de educadores, estudantes e fotógrafos. Galerias de fotografia, criadas com o mercado de arte dos anos 1960, começavam a ganhar notoriedade, principalmente em em Nova York, San Francisco e em outros países como França e Canadá.
Em Tóquio, investidores e colecionadores se interessavam por imagens fotográficas. Era o renascer, com convites para palestras, exposições e livros. "novamente ele estava sendo um artista, produzindo imagens arejadas e experimentais como em 1912, quando pela primeira vez pegou em uma câmera. “Kertesz se deleitava com a fama e sorte genuínas, embora tardias" escreve Robert Gumbo.

Quando tudo estava indo bem com o casal, o fotógrafo,  então com 82 anos, foi internado com uma trombose na perna e Elizabeth desenvolveu um câncer no pulmão. 1976 para ela  foi um ano de entradas e saídas em hospitais. Gumbo conta que Kertész nunca esperou sobreviver a mulher, 8 anos mais nova, e em 1977 com a sua morte, "ele era um homem quebrado, estava fraco, sofrendo com tonturas e até mesmo declarou que havia parado de fotografar."
Com esta perda, uma nova era iniciava pelos seus últimos anos, substituindo a ausência da companheira pela memória de sua vida em conjunto. A dureza dos anos vividos, sustentados pelo trabalho dela, ganharam espaço sem ela nas comemorações agora que estava andando para frente. O crescimento e a fama adquirida, era pouco e tardia diante da falta que a mulher fazia. Na publicação, além dos polaroids, há uma série de fotografias do casal feitas por ele que não revelam as reviravoltas de um casal normal que vivem juntos, mas mostram o lado bom de suas existências.
A energia criativa de Kertész se extinguia quando, curiosamente encontrou em uma loja uma peça de cristal, um delicado formato antropormófico. Começou a fotografá-lo primeiro na beirada da janela, depois junto com as peças compradas juntas pelo casal. "Começou a criar suas metáforas íntimas de amor". Um tableau memorial com símbolos de alegria, frustação, perda e amargura." relata Gumbo. Apesar de trabalhar em preto e branco, ele se interessou pela então nova tecnologia da Polaroid SX70, que havia ganho de presente do músico inglês Graham Nash (do grupo Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young).

Naturalizado americano e fotógrafo diletante já no início da década de 1970, Nash  era um dos maiores colecionadores de fotografia dos Estados Unidos. Em 1976 já contava mais de um milhar de imagens importantes no seu acervo, que foi exibido em vários lugares do mundo. Sem explicações, em 1990 botou sua coleção, já de 2 mil imagens,  a venda na casa de leilões Sotheby's levando US$ 2,4 milhões, um record na época para uma única coleção particular. A fotografia mais cara chegou a US$ 99 mil, um autorretrato do fotógrafo novaiorquino Paul Outerbridge (1896-1958) , de 1927. Curiosamente arrematada,  bem além dos US$ 60 mil esperados,  pelo pioneiro dealer de San Francisco,  G. Ray Hanwkins, que 14 anos antes havia vendido a mesma ao músico por US$ 2 mil. Claro, que os valores evoluiram e muito, mas eram altíssimos para um mercado que começava a engatinhar para a forma atual que chega as vezes aos impressionantes 7 dígitos.
Kertész comprou uma segunda peça  e não parou mais de fotografar. O imediatismo da SX70 acabou substituindo a ansiedade de fazer as suas próprias cópias em gelatina de prata que deixara de fazer há mais de 40 anos. Ele mesmo conta: "Eu comecei a fotografar devagar, devagar, devagar. Mas logo enlouqueci. Trabalhava da manhã até o por do sol. Pela manhã a luz no céu é boa, mas no final do dia ela é repleta de variações." As vezes ele começava assim que acordava e não parava esquecendo até mesmo de tomar o café. O mesmo acontecia no final da tarde quando esquecia de tomar seus remedios. " De repente, eu me perdia, a dor sumia, perdia a fome, e sim, esquecia também a tristeza." relata ele.
Em muitas das polaroids nota-se uma ressignificação de algumas imagens seminais ou de convívio com a mulher. Algumas chegam a ser bem próximas das anteriores dos anos 1930, como uma releitura da imagem do casamento dele. Entretanto, Kertész começou a criar novas imagens, incorporando também outras pessoas, caso de seus retratos de familiares, visitantes, ou amigos como o próprio Robert Gumbo ou a fotógrafa Sylvia Plachy, também de origem húngara, além de retratos que lembram sua série Distorções com mulheres que apareciam em seu apartamento, as quais eventualmente as deixava nuas. Caso de Susan Nash, à epoca casada com o músico. Este, além do presente, contatou a Polaroid que passou então a abastecer o fotógrafo.

Claramente, vê-se que os anos da revista House & Garden rendiam uma certa meticulosidade para os arranjos novos com as peças de cristal que simbolizavam sua mulher. Como escreveu Gumbo, não se trata de um memorial mas sim de uma arte radiante, embora Kertész achava que estas fotografias eram "uma pequena brincadeira". De fato, "ele trabalhava com a paixão de uma criança, que compartilhava não somente o ato fotógráfico mas quando revia as mesmas com os amigos". Até mesmo emoldurou algumas formando uma espécie de santuário em seu apartamento, as quais inclusive voltava a fotografar nos diferentes matizes da  luz que entravam no final da tarde.
A idealização da perda, seja ela uma pessoa ou parte do próprio corpo, ressignificada em fotografias também refletiu-se na obra de outros consagrados nomes como o checo Josef Sudek (1896-1978) , que como Kertész, foi ferido na primeira grande guerra, só que resultando na perda de seu braço direito. Sua superação foi o recolhimento em um bangalô da virada do século em Praga, acumulando no seu espaço igualmente uma memorabilia íntima. Estas fotografias em still life resultaram no notável ensaio Da janela do meu estúdio, colocando-o no cânone internacional. Parte deste trabalho está no livro  Josef Sudek (Ina Kehayoff Pub.,1999) que traz textos da históriadora da arte francesa Anna Fárová (1928-2010) especialista na cultura fotográfica checa e uma das pioneiras da história da fotografia.

O acompanhamento da enfermidade e a perda final, também se traduziu em termos mais contemporâneos na obra do japonês Nobuioshi Araki, que publicou Sentimental Journey and Winter Journey (Shinchosha Company, 1991). No primeiro, há os registros íntimos do início do seu casamento, intitulado Minha mulher Yoko (1967-1976) seguindo a  Winter Journal (1989-1990) anotações diárias do casal nos últimos dias da doença da mulher. Já Araki: Love and Death (Silvana Editoriale, 2011) é o catálogo que acompanhou sua grande retrospectiva no Museo d Art di Lugano, Suíça, em 2010, que aborda sua obra mais completa, incluindo a imagens do livro anterior.
André Kertész fotografou com a SX70 apenas 6 anos ( e eventualmente também com uma câmera 35mm ) até a sua morte em 1985, sempre homenageando Elizabeth, que o havia acompanhado ainda em seu círculo seminal com os artistas importantes em seu país de origem, que certarmente ajudaram a moldá-lo. Algo que arremata uma carreira brilhante, ainda que reconhecida tardiamente. Com a simplicidade de imagens tomadas da janela ou em seu peitoril, as pequenas polaroids revelam uma mente fértil em um amálgama de simples objetos e um conteúdo ontológico poderoso. Em tempos onde uma imagem sem nenhum conteúdo é confundida como conceitual, este livro reafirma a figura central do criador acima de tudo e não do discurso anódino imerso na falta de repertório.
