#finding news from @lostinjewels: There’s an exhibition in the Arab World Institute in Paris @institutdumondearabe that I, personally, recommend to visit if you are enchanted with the ethnic jewelry. “On the roads of Samarkand” is the title; it’s about Samarkand (Uzbekistan) treasures from the 19-20th c.: capricious caftans, head pieces and other gold-embroidered accessories, hand-painted wooden saddles, carpets, paintings, costumes from the nomadic culture and jewelry, of course. Everything is displayed for the first time outside the Uzbek national museums. So it’s an opportunity to see fundamental approach to the collection, that connects different applied arts, and places the objects into their time aesthetics. Usually private collections are formed according to the taste of the collector and the investment values of the objects. So normally we don’t have the advantage to look at the full historical context of the pieces shown during the antique exhibitions or auctions. The show is open until June 4, 2023. Link to the review is in stories. #lostinjewels #ethnicjewellery #jewelryhistory #ethniccostume #artofjewellery #beautyofcostume #historyofstyle #artofembroidery #jewelleryasinspiration https://www.instagram.com/p/CmWfdYoI5Hn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

All of those sneak peaks I’ve posted (and even more!) are now online! Something fabulous that I haven’t tried on are these two 2nd century (!) Ptolemaic Eye Beads from Brian’s new special collection. Carried along important Islamic Trade Routes from Persia to Egypt into Sudan and The West African Kingdom of Mali, a necklace made of these beads would often have been assembled bead by bead over a period of years and decades. Wearing these would truly be like wearing a piece of history! Follow the link in our profile to claim one or both of these exquisite pieces! #ptolemaic #ptolemaicbeads #ancientbeads #antiquebeads #antiquejewelry #islamictraderoute #mali #westafrica #rarebeads #ancientjewelry #jewelryhistory #handwoundbeads #handwoundglass #statementnecklace #fashion #style #shop #nyc #unionsquare #beadsofparadise (at Beads of Paradise NYC) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdtFjwBNXZE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Okay, this piece is super cool to me, not sure if it will be to anyone else. This pendant is handmade and hand-engraved and is a little piece of history. The names on the back indicate it was a family piece of jewelry. I think it is gorgeous and so interesting! It reminds me that the jewelry has a past, present, and future. ✨🌎 . . . . . #jewelry #jewelryhistory #jewelryhandmade #handmadejewelry #handengraved #engraved #historical #vintagejewelry #antiquejewelry #like #follow #jewelrywithastory #jewelrywithsoul #goldjewelry #sapphire #diamond #amazing #historyjewelry #past #pendant #uniquejewelry https://www.instagram.com/p/CNBH66Slpqo/?igshid=hg09tql2k91w

Remembrance jewelry...the tradition of holding onto something personal from a loved one was not always in reaction to a death, as implied by the genre of ‘Memento Mori’, but often denoted a parting, a separation of families or couples over continents or states for any prolonged length of time...the left and middle ring both serve as golden vessels for tightly braided locks of brunette hair, while the ring on the right is one that we made from a photo pin featuring the tintype of a young girl. @davincicode7 Anita Delgado (1890-1962) was a Spanish flamenco dancer  from Andalusia who achieved fame for having married the Indian Maharaja of Kapurthala. ⚜️ She was born in Malaga to a modest family of restaurateurs who emigrated to Madrid. She captured the attention of Maharaja Jagajit Singh Who met her during the marriage ceremony of king Alfonso XIII of Spain. The Maharaja watched her performances in a cafe-concert. He seduced her and stayed with her throughout the wedding but left after the bombing of the royal couple. Later, however, her friends convinced her to further meet him in Paris. He had her educated (including french) in order that he could explain his love for her. She spent time in Paris being completely groomed and educated before setting off from Marseille to Kapurthala. They married on 28 January 1908 and she changed her name to Maharani Prem Kaur Sahiba. ⚜️ Anita Delgado was a strong philanthropic and also a jewelry lover. This unique and beautiful forehead jewel was believed to be her most favourite. She has been photographed in it in many photos. It was originally a jeweled ornament for a royal elephant that was one of the maharaja’s birthday gift to Delgado. It is said that as he handed her the moon crescent shaped stone he said: “Now you can have the moon, my capricious little one.” ⚜️ They separated after the Maharaja married his 7th wife and as a result, Delgado stayed in Paris living secretly with her secretary in order that her allowance continued. Tragically, a ship crarrying all her precious jewels to France got lost. The jewels are said to be worth millions. She died on 7 July 1962 in Madrid. This piece was part of the Althani Collection and sold at Christie's Newyork last year. Photo 1: Courtsey of Christie's.
