Imagine being convicted of a crime you didn’t commit and sentenced to die in the most torturous and degrading way. You not only experience physical pain, but you also experience betrayal by a close friend and others who turn against you. You’re under the rule of a tyrannical government that hates truth and labels you traitor and liar when you’re unarguably completely innocent. When an offer is made to release you, instead the people choose to release a known criminal. You’re young and all you have done with your entire life is help and love people. Miraculously however, you could have made it all stop in an instant, but instead you willingly endured it all until your last breath. Can you imagine?

That is what Jesus did. We can bear the most unimaginable circumstance because Jesus did it first, and He did it while choosing love and forgiveness. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” Romans 5:8.

The world says to love people if they earn it, and forgive only if they ask for it, but that’s not what Jesus demonstrated.

We receive salvation through repentance and faith in Jesus, and we demonstrate that relationship with Him through our forgiveness and love of others. Matthew 6:14-16 says, “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

There is freedom in forgiveness and healing in love. A reflection of our personal relationship with Jesus is how we love and forgive others.

On the cross, Satan was waiting for Jesus in his pain and suffering to curse humanity and himself. But He didn’t do that. In the same way, the enemy tries to use our hurt and unforgiving hearts to not only hurt others, but to hurt ourselves. It’s not natural to choose love when we are hurting and it is impossible to do it alone. It is supernatural to seek Jesus. We were never meant to walk through this life on our own understanding. Everything we suffer and endure is meant to point us back to Jesus, our one and only shelter, strength, and savior. So how do we overcome and make peace in the midst of our pain, hurt, and anger?

We run to Jesus, lay everything at the foot of the cross, and have faith the battle has already been won.

Not only on birthdays should parents and children remember the mercies of the Lord in a special way, but Christmas and New Year's should also be seasons when every household should remember their Creator and Redeemer. Instead of bestowing gifts and offerings in such abundance on human objects, reverence, honor, and gratitude should be rendered to God, and gifts and offerings should be caused to flow in the divine channel. Would not the Lord be pleased with such a remembrance of him? O how God has been forgotten on these occasions. May is Melanoma awareness month!!! So I have some words for my cancer…

When you hear the words, "inner core" what do you think of? The hot lava of a volcano? The toxic core of a nuclear reactor? To me, my "inner core" is that deep strength that gets me through all that life can bring. And when you hear the words, "you have cancer" you need all the strength you can get. My doctor's words, "you have melanoma and now it’s spreading," rocked my world, when I am so lucky, will forever mark me as a cancer survivor, and then made me determined to practice what I preach. I think it's easy to feel abandoned by God in the midst of a diagnosis of cancer. How could this possibly be God's will? I teach the Bible and I know that it says we live in a broken world where the rain falls on the just and unjust alike, but that doesn't mean I can't feel abandoned. For me, that Core is my inner most being. The place that God invaded with life when I trusted in Jesus' forgiving love (John 7:37-39). Jesus is the Giver of the unfailing strength to get us through a diagnosis and beyond. I kept thinking, God knows how many hairs are on my head, he knows what's happening to me now. Our inner core is our soul and when we place our belief in Jesus Christ and make him our Lord and Savior an amazing thing happens. Strength seeps into our core and we see that we are not the sum of the circumstances happening around us; instead, we are strong in His hands. I have a friend who's taught me a great deal in her survivorship. One of her favorite sayings is, "be gentle on your feelings and hard on your mind." Feelings can take us over when we are frightened of a disease, feeling sick and tired of being sick and tired, and worried about our future. I am an emotional person. I often tell myself, "Don't let your emotions drive". My friend would set a timer for a "pity party" - she would experience the doubt, the pain, the entire experience; then acknowledge the feelings, and finally own them. Then when the timer went off she would place the fear-filled feelings aside and move forward in her journey. Fortunately our soul isn't mere feelings. Instead, our soul is a belief in a God who teaches us that cancer can destroy our bodies, but it can’t take us!
