My first book for the booklr reads australian challenge!
Without Further Ado surprised me a little! I hoped I'd like it but I wasn't sure since I'm pretty picky about romances. But I ended up absolutely loving it. I think partly because I read it at a really good time (it's set in a warm sydney autumn and i'm currently in a warm brisbane winter), but also it's just very funny and charming and so easy to read. Plus, I haven't ever actually seen Much Ado About Nothing so some of the big plot moments were completely unexpected for me, even though they mirror Shakespeare. But the biggest reason is maybe that it didn't always feel super romancy. Like yeah I knew Willa would end up with the guy by the end but there was so much time spent on her relationships with her friends and family and it was so much about her own growth that the romance almost felt secondary. There were even a few moments when I felt like if the twist was that Willa realised she was arospec I wouldn't have been surprised. She was very relatable in certain aspects lmao.

book recs sept/oct 2023
THE SPEAR CUTS THROUGH WATER by simon jiminez -- I have no idea how to describe this. best book I've read in a year. absolutely gutting and beautiful and intricately put-together fantasy about two young men escorting an escaped god-empress on a pilgrimage to bring down an empire. but actually it's so much more intimate than that. please please please read this book, it deserves the world. yes it's gay.
WITHOUT FURTHER ADO by jessica dettmann -- an aussie romcom tailored specifically to me, someone who imprinted on the kenneth branagh much ado about nothing movie. very meta and genre aware, lively and touching, a heap of fun.
LOOKING GLASS SOUND by catriona ward -- also very meta! it's uhhh about a bisexual disaster teen's coming-of-age summer, and also about the decades-later fight over who gets to control the narrative of that summer. and hauntings. and serial killers. every single one of ward's books is its own unique thing and a wonder to behold.
THE NOBLEMAN'S GUIDE TO SEDUCING A SCOUNDREL by kj charles -- if i haven't made you read any kjc books by now then what are we doing here. I don't know how she keeps getting better and better and better. this one is another slippery liar/stubbornly goodhearted but bad-tempered lord pairing. I adored every word.
NOT HERE TO MAKE FRIENDS by jodi mcalister (ARC) -- 3rd book in her series set on a bachelor-like tv show, and my hands-down favourite. friends to lovers but also make it schemer 4 schemer!! I would die for this ruthless tv villain and her sleep deprived gremlin producer and their intense, searing, incredible romance entirely free of conventional moral compasses.
THE HOLLOW PLACES by t. kingfisher -- how are her books both so hilarious and so wildly, skin-crawlingly unsettling?? I think it's because of how relatable the protagonist is. I would react EXACTLY like kara if I found an eerie alternate dimension nexus made of willow trees in the walls of my uncle's weird museum. superb and very readable horror.
THE GILDED CROWN by marianne gordon (ARC) -- fantasy with a sapphic romance between a death-witch and the assassinated princess she was hired to raise from the dead. yes you're right that DOES sound amazing. the writing is assured and smooth and propulsive; if you like stories with a heightened mythic/fairytale feel, you'll love this.

How Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer Infused EDM and Orchestral Music to Bring "The Matrix Resurrections" to Life
We spoke to the esteemed composers about how they achieved a sound unique enough to stand on its own while harkening back to the electronic classics of "Matrix" yesteryear.

The Matrix Resurrections was everything the Matrix faithful could have wanted and more.
Following 2003's The Matrix Revolutions, the new film stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, and Jessica Henwick. Together, the cast brought a whole new story to the iconic franchise that feels deeply intimate and thrilling.
Viewing the franchise across its 20-year history, these films are arguably some of the most influential bodies of work in the 21st century. The three films to date (not including this latest release) have grossed more $3 billion across the box office, home entertainment sales, video game revenue, soundtrack album sales, merchandising, and more.

But what makes the Matrix films so iconic in American culture? Is it the unique storyline? The bending bullets, iconic wardrobe of the characters, or the mind-melting special effects? It is all of these and more, but one aspect undoubtably intertwined through the latticework of those elements is the music.
This commitment to groundbreaking music remained resolute in Resurrections. Released in conjunction with the film, The Matrix Resurrections (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), features not only the scores of Golden Globe-nominated composers Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer, but also 11 remixes by influential electronic music producers Marcel Dettmann and Thomas Fehlmann, among many others. The soundtrack brings to life a unique body of work that perfectly unites the iconic franchise's orchestral and dance music roots.

EDM.com spoke with Klimek and Tykwer to discuss the process of developing the soundtrack of The Matrix Resurrections, and explore why the fusion of classical and electronic music was such a vital component to the storytelling of the film.
Paying Homage to The Musical History of The Matrix
Even before being hired as the composers of the film, Klimek and Tykwer were superfans of the Matrix franchise.
"I was amazed by the first film, The Matrix and in particular was inspired by its score,” says Tykwer. “I felt like everyone involved with The Matrix believed that there was a future in combining electronic music with traditional orchestral scores. The film’s score to me was an instant classic. It was something I knew I wanted to work on at some point in my career.”

Unlike other film franchises that have iconic songs, the Matrix franchise, as Tykwer describes, is unique due to the ways in which its installments push the boundaries of sonic experimentation. Klimek stressed that these "unique sounds" buoy each film's score and bring an unmatched layer of energy.
To achieve their own style of "Matrix sounds," the composers worked together to flesh out a bank of prerecorded sounds, which were eventually weaved into the score of Resurrections. These sounds comprised the wholly singular sonic branding elements that Klimek and Tykwer knew were key to an unforgettable soundtrack.
Building the Score Alongside the Resurrections Script Development
During the early days of the movie's screenplay development, Klimek and Tykwer had spent over a year recording music with the London Contemporary Orchestra in order to bring samples into the first read-through session with the actors and directors. The goal was to give the cast and crew a feel early on for how the music would complement the acting which, according to both Tykwer and Klimek, made a huge impact in the cohesion of Resurrections and its score.
"Once there is a script, we insist as composers for the musical process to begin right then even if it takes another year for financing to finalize,” says Tykwer. “We believe that the music has to be a major component to the way ideas are conceptualized and executed in the filmmaking process."
This unique approach helped shape the way music was woven through the film. It also gave both Klimek and Tykwer an opportunity to receive feedback from director Lana Wachowski, as well as from actors and other fundamental players. This feedback loop played a pivotal role to achieving a sound that harkened back to Matrix classics—but unique enough to stand on its own.
Orchestral Scores as a Sub-Genre of EDM
To entwine the elements of classical music with EDM, Klimek and Tykwer treated the orchestra as a sub-genre of the latter, approaching the recording process like that of a DJ. They went ahead and recorded each musician of the orchestra individually to facilitate greater control and flexibility when manipulating each instrument.
"At the Abbey Road Studio sessions, we recorded everything separately," explains Klimek. "This included the strings, pads, and any underlying themes not only for the string instruments but for the wind and brass instruments as well. Ultimately, the way we treated the recording process was through an electronic production lens, bringing the two genres of music closer together than ever before."
Lana Wachowski’s Background in EDM Tied the Score and Soundtrack Together
One of the lynchpins of the sublime soundtrack was the support of fabled writer and director Lana Wachowski, who has long embraced EDM's role in The Matrix. However, many may not know her background in dance music goes beyond the film.
Wachowski is heavily engaged in the EDM community, to the point where she occasionally DJs herself. Her deep appreciation for the art of electronic dance music made a major impact on the way Klimek and Tykwer approached their working relationship with the legendary director.

"Lana is extremely connected in the dance music world," says Tykwer. “She holds an important place in the dance music scene, to the point where many of the DJs featured on the film’s soundtrack were all friends of hers. It is not too much to say that The Matrix franchise has impacted this genre at large."
Tykwer says that during the process of scoring the film, both composers and Wachowski worked almost exclusively in Apple’s Logic X software. According to Tykwer, Logic's grid structure "invited [Wachowski] to think of the score in a more dance music-like theme," further alchemizing orchestra and EDM in the final product.
"Lana cares profoundly about music to the point where she spent months with us just working on the sonics of The Matrix Resurrections," adds Klimek. "She was a true partner with us and was a driving force in bringing this score to new heights, not only for the Matrix fans, but for the dance music culture."

Weihnachten rückt immer näher. Und mal ganz ehrlich, glauben Sie eigentlich noch an den Weihnachtsmann?
Aljonna und Klaus Möckel laden uns ins Zauberland ein, wo diesmal jedoch eine große Katastrophe für die Smaragdenstadt droht. Gleich zwei Mal ermitteln kluge Köpfe und lösen selbst die schwierigsten Fälle. Kein Wunder, schließlich wissen der von Steffen Mohr erdachte Kommissar Gustav Merks und auch der von Jan Flieger erfundene Kommissar „Spürnase“ ihre kleinen grauen Zellen zu nutzen. Und von Tobias, also von Kommissar „Spürnase“, erfahren wir sogar, was er sonst noch tut, wenn er ganz intensiv denkt.
Schließlich sind da noch insgesamt 40 ganz wunderbare Feuilletons von Jürgen Borchert zu haben. Und der ist ein Schriftsteller, der in dieser literarischen Disziplin einfach klasse war, vielleicht sogar Weltklasse. Aber überzeugen Sie sich am besten selbst und legen Sie einen Elefanten auf die Briefwaage. Vastehnsemarecht. Aber zurück zu Weihnachten.
Es ist nur eine kurze Zeit her, eine ganz kurze Zeit, da hat die EDITION digital das Buch „Wer glaubt schon an den Weihnachtsmann?“ von Lutz Dettmann sowohl als gedruckte Ausgabe wie auch als E-Book herausgebracht: Weihnachten – Fest der Familie, strahlende Kinderaugen unter dem Weihnachtsbaum, Besinnlichkeit, für viele Menschen aber auch Symbol für Konsumterror, Völlerei und eine Zeit der Einsamkeit. Lutz Dettmann macht die Vielfalt der zahlreichen, oft widersprüchlichen Seiten der Weihnachtsfeiertage für den Leser erfahrbar. Die abwechslungsreichen Kurzgeschichten führen den Leser vom Mecklenburg der Gegenwart, in der ein erbarmungsloser Dekorationskrieg zweier Nachbarfamilien ein überraschendes Finale hat, bis in die Schützengräben von Flandern, wo er hautnah dabei ist, wie in der Heiligen Nacht des Jahres 1914 aus Feinden Freunde werden. Lutz Dettmanns Geschichten regen zum Nachdenken an und sind – genau wie die Vorweihnachtszeit – manchmal skurril oder auch trivial. Eines haben sie alle gemein: Sie vermitteln diese besondere Weihnachtsstimmung. Fast alle Weihnachtsgeschichten, über Jahre für die Familie geschrieben, finden in diesem Buch erstmals ihren Weg in die Öffentlichkeit. Dem Buch liegt außerdem eine DVD bei. Sie enthält den Kurzfilm „Fröhliche Weihnachten“ (Regie: Till Endemann), der nach der in diesem Band enthaltenen Erzählung „Alle Jahre wieder“ gedreht und 2010 im MDR erstausgestrahlt wurde. Dafür hatte Lutz Dettmann auch das Drehbuch geschrieben. Die Erzählung ist ebenfalls im E-Book enthalten.
Aber nun erst mal eine kleine Kostprobe aus den mitunter recht ungewöhnlichen Weihnachtsgeschichten von Lutz Dettmann. Auch diese hier beginnt zunächst recht still und harmlos und fast gewöhnlich:
„Stille Nacht
Dr. Friedrich Christ war ein ruhiger und ausgeglichener Mann. Bis vor fünf Jahren hatte er in der Landeshauptstadt gewohnt und dort eine florierende Arztpraxis geführt. Doch als der Doktor fünfzig wurde, stellte er fest, dass er nun in einem Alter sei, in dem auch er zählte und nicht nur seine Patienten.
Um es kurz zu machen: Als der Doktor einige Monate später in einer Ärztezeitung las, dass eine Landarztpraxis frei werden würde, setzte er sich in seinen alten DKW und fuhr hinaus aufs Land. Der alte Landarzt stutzte zwar, dass sein potenzieller Nachfolger gerade einmal 15 Jahre jünger sein würde als er. Doch er fand ihn sympathisch und beide wurden schnell handelseinig.
Des Doktors Frau brauchte nicht lange überredet zu werden, denn sie hatte schon lange bemerkt, dass ihr Mann in der Großstadt nicht mehr glücklich war. So wurden die vielen Bücher eingepackt, der Tochter und dem Sohn ein langer Brief geschrieben und hinaus ging es aufs Land. Der alte und der neue Landarzt praktizierten noch eine kurze Zeit gemeinsam, denn ganz einfach ist es nicht auf dem Land für einen neuen Arzt, auch wenn er schon 50 ist. Aber der neue alte Doktor sprach Platt und bewies den Leuten auch, dass er was konnte, und irgendwie deckte er auch noch einen alten Zweig seines Stammbaumes auf, der dort in Bargeshagen vor 100 Jahren gelebt hatte. Der alte Arzt setzte sich beruhigt zur Ruhe und zog zu seiner Tochter nach Greifswald.
Dr. Christ fühlte sich wohl, weitab vom Großstadttrubel in seiner kleinen Praxis, mit dem kleinen Häuschen und dem großen Garten. Und wenn er nicht einen Schnack mit den Nachbarn machte, verbrachte er seine Mußestunden im Garten, las und beobachtete seine Frau beim Jäten und Ernten. Am Sonntag saß Dr. Friedrich Christ inmitten seiner Gemeinde und machte seinem Namen alle Ehre. Eigentlich hätte er glücklich und zufrieden bis ins Rentenalter leben können. Doch – wie schon gesagt – unser Doktor war ein ausgeglichener Mann – war – bis vor einigen Monaten. Dann nahm das Unheil seinen Lauf.
Unruhig wälzte sich Doktor Christ von der einen auf die andere Seite. Der Schlaf wollte einfach nicht wiederkommen – obwohl es erst fünf Uhr war. Fast schmerzhaft klang der Gong des alten Regulators aus dem Wohnzimmer herauf. Neben ihm schlief seine Frau den Schlaf der Gerechten. Fast war er wütend auf sie, obwohl sie doch nicht dafür konnte, dass er nicht schlief. Dafür konnte nur eine bestimmte Kreatur etwas, und diese schmetterte ihren Laut schon wieder in die dunkle Nacht, seit fast zwei Stunden. „Dieses Miststück von Hahn!“ Der Doktor vergrub seine Ohren in das tiefe Kissen. Doch gedämpft klang das KIKERIKI noch immer an seine Ohren, als ob die Hühnerfedern mit dem Hahn unter einer Decke steckten.
„Heute gehe ich noch einmal rüber zu Lehmann und red mit ihm! Der Hahn muss weg. Das Vieh ist doch verrückt! Stockdunkel, von der Sonne nicht eine Spur und krähen tut das Aas wie im Sommer. Verdammt, wir haben Oktober! Oktober!“
Die Hand seiner nun erwachten Ehegattin ließ ihn verstummen. „Mann, versuch zu schlafen! Kein Wunder, dass du mit deiner schlechten Laune die Patienten zur Frau Doktor treibst.“ Da war es – das zweite Übel, dass ihn nicht ruhig schlafen ließ: Die junge Frau Doktor, die im Nachbardorf vor einigen Wochen eine Praxis eröffnet hatte. In Scharen liefen die alten Kerle mit dem kleinsten Zipperlein zu ihr und ließen vor ihr die Hosen runter! Wenn es so weitergehen würde, hätte er nur noch die alte Meyersche als Kundin. Die wog vier Zentner und konnte darum nicht in das Nachbardorf zur Konkurrenz gelangen.
Doch mit der hübschen Doktorin konnte er leben. Der Hahn war das größere Übel. Die Frau Kollegin war ja noch nett zu ihm, aber der Lehmannsche Hahn war eine Ausgeburt der Hölle.“
Erstmals 2002 erschien bei der LeiV Buchhandels- und Verlagsanstalt als Band 7 der Nikolai-Bachnow-Bücher die Druckausgabe von „Der Hexer aus dem Kupferwald“ von Aljonna und Klaus Möckel: Im Kupferwald, wo es Aluminiumfinken, Goldschwanzaffen und Silberwölfe gibt, haust in seiner Hütte der finstere Hexer Kaligmo. Seine magischen Kräfte bezieht er von einem Strauch, dem er dafür sein Blut spenden muss. Kaligmo ist eingebildet und hält sich für den größten aller Zauberer. Als er bei einem Magierwettstreit in der Smaragdenstadt nur den dritten Platz belegt, schwört er schreckliche Rache. Er schickt schwarze Stachelmänner aus, die überall wildwachsende Dornenhecken und Kakteen pflanzen. Die Stadt soll zuwuchern und alles Leben darin erstickt werden. Eine Katastrophe droht, der Weise Scheuch, Prinzessin Betty und die anderen müssen etwas unternehmen. Vergeblich bemühen sie sich zunächst, den Urheber herauszufinden. Als der Hexer sich dann zu erkennen gibt, ist guter Rat teuer. Der Tapfere Löwe und Elefant Dickhaut, die Kaligmo aufsuchen, um ihn zur Rede zu stellen, werden in unzerbrechliche Glaskugeln gebannt; der Eiserne Holzfäller entkommt mit Not einem grässlichen Tod. Aber da der Scheuch, Betty, Jessica, Larry Katzenschreck und sogar der Storch Klapp sich zusammenschließen, wird der Zauberer am Ende doch noch gestoppt.
Am Anfang des spannenden und sehr einfallsfreudigen Buches erfahren wir, worüber sich der finstere Hexer Kaligmo so sehr ärgert und wie abschreckend er aussieht:
„Erster Teil: Die schwarzen Kaktusmänner
Ein beleidigter Zauberer
Ein Sirren lag in der Luft, ein Klang, als würden sanfte Hände über tausend Gitarrensaiten streichen. Es kam vom Wind, der mit den Zweigen des Kupferwaldes spielte. Mittagszeit. Die Goldschwanzaffen dösten in den Baumwipfeln; ab und zu huschte ein Aluminiumfink zum nächsten Strauch.
Am Ende des Waldes, dort wo Dornenhecken und Stachelgestrüpp eine karge Ebene ankündigten, stand eine Hütte. Sie war stabil gebaut, aber ganz von Grünspan überzogen, denn ihre Wände bestanden aus Stämmen der Kupfereiche. Betrat man die Hütte, so schien sie nicht viel Raum zu bieten, doch der erste Eindruck täuschte. Eine geschickt in den Boden eingelassene Tür führte über eine Treppe nicht nur in einen Keller, sondern auch zu weiteren Wohnräumen. Sie waren mit Teppichen ausgelegt, möbliert und durch Leuchtsteine erhellt, wie es sie nur im Zauberland gab.
Hier war das Reich des Hexers Kaligmo, eines mürrischen Mannes von unbeschreiblicher Hässlichkeit. Mit seiner schiefen Nase im eckigen Gesicht, mit abstehenden Ohren und einer Warze auf der Stirn, mit kurzen Beinen und langen dünnen Armen hätte er ohne weiteres einen nächtlichen Gruselgeist spielen können. Sein abschreckendes Äußeres war auch der Grund, weshalb er in dieser Einöde lebte.
Doch Kaligmo hielt sich für einen bedeutenden Zauberer und Erfinder. Ganz unbegründet war das auch nicht, konnte er doch Wasser in Most verwandeln und Tiere zu Stein erstarren lassen. Außerdem experimentierte er mit Kräutern, Mineralien, Säften. Er rührte und mischte die verschiedensten Substanzen zu einem Gebräu oder Teig, mit dem er jegliches Leben nach seinen Wünschen verändern oder gar vernichten wollte.
In diesen Tagen war Kaligmo besonders schlecht gelaunt – er musste sich irgendwie Luft verschaffen. Mit der Absicht, seine Wut an dem erstbesten Wesen auszulassen, das ihm über den Weg lief, verließ er seine Hütte. Die friedliche Landschaft draußen beruhigte ihn ein wenig und er begnügte sich zunächst damit, rechts und links blaue Blitze in die Büsche zu schleudern, so dass die Vögel kreischend aufflatterten. Als jedoch ein alter Wolf mit metallisch glänzendem Fell unglücklicherweise aus dem Gesträuch sprang, schrie der Hexer: „Bleib stehn, sonst verwandle ich dich in einen Hackstock!“
Der Wolf wusste, wie gefährlich Kaligmo war, und verharrte reglos am Fleck. Seine raue Stimme dämpfend, bat er: „Lass mich gehen, ich hab dir nichts getan. Wenn du willst, fange ich dir einen fetten Hasen zum Abendbrot.“ Das besänftigte den Zauberer etwas. „Heute und morgen einen Hasen“, befahl er, „übermorgen zwei Wachteln! Aber hüte dich, mich zu betrügen, wie es die Leute in dieser widerwärtigen Smaragdenstadt getan haben.“
„Man hat dich betrogen?“, fragte der Wolf. Er merkte, dass es am besten für ihn war, das Gespräch in Gang zu halten.
„Betrogen ist gar kein Ausdruck. Dieser Scheuch und seine Bande sind nichts als Scharlatane, denen man das Handwerk legen muss. Was verstehen die schon von Zauberei. Erst schreiben sie einen Wettbewerb aus, bei dem man seine Kunst zeigen soll, dann urteilen sie nach ihrem lächerlichen Geschmack. Warum habe ich mich bloß herabgelassen, teilzunehmen?“
Der Wolf wusste nicht, was er erwidern sollte, begriff aber, dass Kaligmo einen Zuhörer brauchte. Dem Hexer war offenbar ein Unrecht geschehen oder er bildete sich das wenigstens ein. Jedenfalls musste er sich die Sache wohl von der Seele reden, zumal er sonst stets allein in seiner Hütte hockte. „Dabei habe ich ein so wunderbares Kunstwerk geschaffen“, erklärte Kaligmo.
„Entschuldige, ich habe noch nicht genau verstanden, worum es bei dem Wettbewerb ging“, sagte der Vierbeiner.
„Worum es ging? Wir sollten eine Festtafel nach unseren Vorstellungen gestalten. Mit unseren Wunderkräften natürlich. Alle Hexen und Feen des Zauberlandes waren versammelt, darunter so mancher Nichtskönner. Ich habe meine ganze Kunst entfaltet. Aber dann, bei der Preisverleihung ...“
„Sie haben dich übergangen“, wagte der Wolf den Satz zu vollenden.
„O nein! Das haben sie sich nun doch nicht getraut. Aber der Scheuch, der sich weise nennt und den obersten Richter spielte, hat mir nur den dritten Preis zuerkannt, den dritten!“ Angesichts dieser Kränkung traten Kaligmo Tränen in die Augen.
Der Wolf konnte den Schmerz nicht ganz nachempfinden. Er dachte, dass ein dritter Preis bei einem solch großen Wettbewerb durchaus eine Anerkennung sei. Aber er hütete sich, das kundzutun. „Was hattest du denn gezaubert, Großer Kaligmo?“, fragte er unterwürfig und trat ganz vorsichtig einen Schritt zurück.
Der Hexer war zu sehr mit seiner Rede beschäftigt, um die Fluchtabsicht zu bemerken. Zudem fühlte er sich geschmeichelt. „Die wunderbarsten Gerichte aus den Höhlen meiner Kindheit. Blutegelsuppe und Mäuseschwanztorte. Drei fette Ratten in einer Ziegenhaut gebacken und mit Eulenfedern garniert. Das Ganze in einem Kranz grauer Sumpffrüchte. Über Kreuz angeordnete gehäutete Schlangen an beiden Enden der Tafel. Die besten Stücke mit Dornen gespickt. Genial, sage ich dir!“´

Mit Anke und Karolin gab es in der Stadt zwei Stardiven, und das war einfach eine Diva zu viel. Zwar traten die beiden jungen Frauen gemeinsam in einem ständig ausverkauften Brettlprogramm auf. Doch als ruchbar wurde, dass die blonde Anke ihrer Kollegin den Lebenspartner weggeschnappt hatte, tickte die Bombe.
Gerade jetzt stand Anke neben ihrem Auserwählten. Sie bückte sich in den Mercedes, mit dem sie als erste Gäste auf dem ländlichen Parkplatz gelandet waren. Der gutmütige Peter, Herr beider Künstlerinnen und einiger anhängender Musikanten und Tänzer, blickte mit großen blauen Augen in die Nachmittagssonne. Eben belud ihn die Braut mit mindestens sechs Blumensträußen. „Echtes Verlobungswetter, Schatz“, strahlte Peter. „Jetzt ist es gerade mal 17 Uhr“, bemerkte Anke kühl. „Bis Sieben trudeln die letzten Gäste ein, und dann wird es schon Nacht.“ Während sie neben ihrem Bräutigam auf den romantischen Landgasthof zustakste, meinte sie: „Gott sei Dank kommt mein alter Freund, der Kommissar. Und hoffentlich bleibt Karolin der Party fern.“
Der Weg über den Hof war mit Feldsteinen gepflastert. Der Schnee fiel quasi aus heiterem Himmel. Rasch überzogen die Flocken die weite Fläche des Parkplatzes mit einer dichten Decke. Es war kurz nach 19 Uhr, als Kommissar Gustav Merks seinen alten Audi neben die anderen Wagen stellte. Vorsichtig, um die für den Anlass frisch geputzten Schuhe nicht zu beschmutzen, balancierte er einen Riesenstrauß und seinen stattlichen Bauch über den Hof.
Drinnen liefen bereits die musikalischen Verlobungsständchen. Als der Kommissar in der Tür erschien, steppte die mollige Karolin zu heißen Pianoklängen über das Parkett. Man konnte über die beiden Künstlerinnen denken, was man wollte - in diesem Augenblick, als die kühle Schönheit neben ihrem Bräutigam still sitzen musste, war Karolin die weitaus bezauberndere Person im Saal. Sie hatte einen witzigen Song über die rosige Zukunft verfasst und verführte damit selbst die anwesenden Brettlkollegen zu Beifallsstürmen. Als sie Anke gelbe Rosen und Peter ein Biedermeiersträußchen mit großer Silberdistel überreichte, beobachtete der Kommissar von der Tür aus die Mienen der Drei genau. „Wenn Blicke Stichwaffen wären“, dachte Merks. In diesem Moment schob sich Karolin an ihm vorbei nach draußen. Offenbar musste sie zur Toilette. Anke rief: „Oh, Gustav! Setz dich doch in Ermangelung eines Schwiegervaters an meine Seite!“ Merks gratulierte väterlich, und amüsiert verfolgte er die anschließende Darbietung des Hausballetts. Danach mischte sich eine völlig entspannte Karolin wieder unter die Gäste.
Das Büffet wurde eröffnet. In einem günstigen Moment winkte Anke den Kommissar an ihre Seite. „Denk nicht, dass das, was ich dir anvertraue, bloß Theaterdonner ist. Karolin hat einem der Musiker erzählt, dass sie mich in die Luft sprengen will. Wörtlich! Von einer Autobombe war die Rede. Du hast doch Erfahrung mit so was. Könntest du bitte mal zu unserem Wagen gehen und nachschauen?“ Merks nickte stumm. Als er schon auf dem Hof war, stand die Braut plötzlich in der Eingangstür und winkte ihn aufgeregt zurück. „Entschuldige. Weißt du denn, welches Fahrzeug unseres ist?“ „Deinen Wagen“, meinte Merks, „finde ich auf Anhieb.“ - Weshalb?
2. NUR DIE KROKUSSE WAREN ZEUGE
Bei Eisen-Lutz in der Gartenlaube lag eine Leiche. Kommissar Gustav Merks hatte die unverwechselbare, markante Stimme des invalidisierten Eisenhändlers am Telefon sofort erkannt. Mit Glas-Peter, seinem ebenfalls im Ruhestand lebenden Grundstücksnachbarn, befand sich der Alte im Dauerstreit. Mal wuchsen die Zweige der Pflaumenbäume von Eisen-Lutz zu weit über den Glas-Zaun, mal rannten Nachbars Hühner quer durch fremde Blumenbeete. Eisen-Lutz aber war als gewalttätig bekannt. Die Hühner von Glas-Peter erlegte er mit der Sense. Diesmal wahrscheinlich auch den ehemaligen Glaser selbst.
Die ganze Woche hatte es Bindfäden geregnet. Dementsprechend war der Zustand der Wege im Gartenverein. Merks ließ sein Fahrzeug vor dem Torschild mit der Aufschrift „Märchenidyll“ stehen. Seinen massigen Körper mühsam bewegend, stapfte er durch den Schlamm.
Irgendwie war trotzdem ein Auto bis zum Grundstück von Eisen-Lutz durchgekommen. Es parkte vorm Zaun. Merks erkannte den Nobelschlitten als den Manta von Glas-Peter. Jetzt musste ihm der Eisenhändler ein bisschen mehr erzählen als die drei Sätze am Telefon: „Der Glaser ist bei mich rein inne Laube. Hat mir angegriffen mit ne Waffe. Ich hab ihm mit de Sense 'n Kopp kürzer gemacht. Komm' Se doch ma vorbei, Herr Kommissar.“
In allen Farben des Frühlings leuchteten lieblich die Krokusse auf Eisen-Lutzens Beeten. Dazwischen, auf dem Weg zur Laube, erblickte der Polizist die tiefen Fußstapfen eines Mannes. Vom Manta aus führten sie direkt auf das Gartenhäuschen zu. Merks sah zu, dass er in die Spuren hineintrat, um nicht noch mehr Schlamm an seine Schuhe zu pappen.
Glas-Peter lag auf den Dielen gleich hinter der Tür. Der als Graf Koks verschriene alte Kleinkapitalist, von dem man sich erzählte, sein Harem erledige alles im Gärtchen, sah im Designeranzug und den frisch gewienerten Markenschuhen, auf deren Sohlen noch das Preisschild klebte, auch im Tode noch ganz passabel aus. Mit einer kleinen Ausnahme: Sein blond getöntes Toupet und ein erhebliches Stück Kopfhaut befanden sich einige Schritte von ihrem natürlichen Sitz entfernt in der entgegengesetzten Ecke des Raumes. Blutspritzer bedeckten den Boden. Die Sense von Eisen-Lutz lag neben dem abgetrennten Kopfsegment.
„Ich habe nullkommanischt verändert, Herr Kommissar.“ In seiner Pratze schwang der rotgesichtige Choleriker einen schwarzen Taser. „Mit diesem Elektroschocker hat das Schwein mir angegriffen. Latscht rein in meine Hütte, zieht das Ding und will mir betäuben! Nee, da hab ich mir gleich gewehrt. Und die Sense hat, wie Sie sehn, ganze Arbeit geleistet.“
„Und warum halten Sie jetzt den Scorpion 750 in der Hand?“ Merks schüttelte ärgerlich den Kopf. „Es war die reine Notwehr, Herr Kommissar!“ „Glas-Peter ist also direkt aus seinem Wagen in Ihre Laube gestürzt und mit dem Taser auf Sie los?“ „Was 'n sonst? Nu machn Se schon Ihre Tatortbildchen.“
„Nicht nötig. Wir müssen bei der Polizei jetzt auch mit Fotomaterial sparen. Außerdem bin ich fest überzeugt, dass sich die Tötung Ihres Gartennachbarn ganz anders abgespielt hat.“ - Wie?
„Elefant auf der Briefwaage“ – unter diesem schönen Titel veröffentlichte Jürgen Borchert erstmals 1979 im Mitteldeutschen Verlag Halle-Leipzig 40 Feuilletons: Es sind Momentaufnahmen und viele andere Dinge, die der Feuilletonist Jürgen Borchert in diesem Band versammelt. Insgesamt 40 an der Zahl. Und der Bogen der Themen und Titel ist wie immer weit gespannt, reicht vom Nabel der Welt über Labyrinthe und Inkas im Ballon bis zu einer Frau im blauen Kleid und eben zu verschiedenen Momentaufnahmen. Und gleich am Anfang des Bandes mit 40 Feuilletons, die man am besten nicht gleich alle auf einmal, sondern Stück für Stück genießen sollte, gibt es eine bemerkenswerte Empfehlung des Autors an seine Kritiker: „Meinen Kritikern empfehle ich, sich eine Briefwaage, wo nicht schon vorhanden, unbedingt anzuschaffen. Sie können sie zum Abwägen meiner Feuilletons benutzen. So werden sie dann bestätigt finden, was sie schon immer behaupten: Diese Feuilletons sind einfach zu leicht. Wie ein Elefant. Vastehnsemarecht.“ Aber dazu muss man sie gelesen haben. Alle. Fangen wir doch einfach mit diesem hier an:
„Fähre zu verkaufen
Eines Tages steht eine Anzeige in der Zeitung; sie bietet eine Gierfähre feil, gut erhalten und in zugelassenem Zustande. Die Tragfähigkeit beträgt, wenn wir dem Anzeigentext glauben dürfen, 18 Tonnen. Über den Preis ist allerdings nichts ausgesagt, aber da eine Gierfähre nicht über einen Motor oder ähnliche technische Raffinessen verfügt, Zierleistenbei einem solchen Fahrzeug nicht vorhanden und andere preistreibende Extras nicht erwähnt sind, dürfen wir getrost meinen, die Gierfähre sei erheblich billiger zu haben als ein gebrauchter Wartburg. Also greifen Sie zu: so schnell kommen Sie nicht wieder zu einer Gierfähre, einem Gefährt, das zudem höchst umweltfreundlich ist, sich völlig lautlos bewegt und keinen Treibstoff benötigt, wenn man von einem gelegentlichen Schnaps für den Fährmann absieht: abends ist es manchmal kühl auf dem Wasser.
Bevor nun aber alle Gierfähren ausverkauft und also von der Elbe verschwunden sein werden, bin ich schnell noch mit einer gefahren, um herauszufinden, wie denn so ein Gefährt eigentlich funktioniert, so ohne Motor und Treibstoff. Zunächst führt eine kleine Straße auf den Strom zu, geradenwegs ins Wasser hinein, um auf der anderen Seite weiterzugehen, als sei sie nicht durch einen halben Kilometer Elbe unterbrochen.
Hier, zwischen den Straßenenden, pendelt die Gierfähre. Sie pendelt: das will sagen, sie bewegt sich lautlos und geheimnisvoll wie ein Pendel ohne sichtbaren Antrieb von Ufer zu Ufer hin und her. Nun ist die Fähre an unserer Seite angekommen, legt knirschend an, der Fährmann leiert die hölzerne Auffahrklappe hinunter und betrachtet uns einsame Fußgänger missbilligend: solche Touren lohnen sich nicht. Dann betätigt er zwei urige, ins Wasser hinabreichende Hebelgestänge, und wiederum lautlos und geisterlich entfernen wir uns auf diesem brettflachen, mit einer Holzbude für den Fährmann versehenen Vehikel, um schließlich am anderen Ufer zu landen. Während der Fahrt (sie dauert vielleicht drei Minuten) geht uns ein Licht auf; das Prinzip der Gierfähre offenbart sich: An einem langen Seil, ein paar Hundert Meter stromauf verankert, hängt der Fährprahm, dessen Bewegung von zwei am Schiffsboden befindlichen Seitenrudern erzeugt wird. Die Strömung der Elbe drückt also unseren Kahn je nach Stellung jener Ruder auf die eine oder andere Seite, ohne dass menschliche oder maschinelle Kraft vonnöten wäre. Diese Erfindung, genial in ihrer Primitivität, soll, wie ich mir habe sagen lassen, mehr als tausend Jahre alt sein. Der Fährmann, unsere noch beim Absteigen schafsdumm staunenden Gesichter betrachtend, grinst, stellt seine Hebel um und entschwindet zum jenseitigen Ufer, wo schon eine Autokolonne hupend seiner harrt, besseren Geschäften entgegen.
Nun aber beginnt man, die Gierfähren zu verkaufen. Wozu, so frage ich Sie, sollen sie anderswo dienen? Wo die Strömung fehlt, kann sich die beste Gierfähre nicht vom Flecke rühren. Wo aber die Fähre fehlt, kann niemand mehr übersetzen.“
Und noch ein Kommissar – allerdings ein viel kleinerer und sicher nicht so schwergewichtig wie Gustav Merks. Aber auch schon ganz schön clever. Erstmals 1999 war im Arena Verlag Würzburg die Druckausgabe von „Der Kommissar in der Regentonne. Ein Fall für die Superspürnasen und andere Detektivgeschichten“ von Jan Flieger erschienen: Darauf muss man erst mal kommen. Aber die kleinen Detektive und Detektivinnen erweisen sich als Superspürnasen. Egal, ob es um gestohlene Papageien, um eine verschwundene Kuhherde, um einen scheinbar nicht zu fassenden Parfümdieb im Kaufhaus oder um einen seltsamen Weihnachtsmann geht. Am Ende geht es jedenfalls gut aus. Übrigens, Leo, die Nervensäge, ist ein Papagei, ein Gelbbrust-Ara. Und nicht jeder, der so aussieht, ist wirklich ein Weihnachtsmann.
Und hier der Anfang der titelgebenden Detektivgeschichte, der uns auch gleich mit Tobias und seinen Freunden bekanntmacht, und mit Opa Lungwitz und natürlich mit Leo:
„Der Kommissar in der Regentonne
Tobias, Gökhan, Sophie und Nadine kommen aus der Schule. Sie schlendern langsam durch die Kleingartenanlage, vorbei am Vogelhaus von Opa Lungwitz. Eigentlich ist ja Opa Lungwitz gar kein Opa, sondern ein Mann im Vorruhestand. Aber die Kinder nennen ihn Opa, weil er so nett und gemütlich ist. Und er winkt ihnen immer zu, wenn er in seinem Garten oder im Vogelhaus arbeitet. Opa Lungwitz hat es selbst gebaut, aus Glas und Maschendraht. Es ist ein wunderschönes Vogelhaus. Und voller bunter Vögel.
„Ach du dickes Ei“, staunt Tobias, denn vor dem Gartentor von Opa Lungwitz steht ein Karton. Und eine krächzende Stimme ist daraus zu hören: „Mahlzeit!“ Gökhan wirft einen forschenden Blick auf den Karton. „Klingt wie Leo“, stellt er fest. „Leo?“, fragt Sophie ungläubig. Leo ist nämlich ein Papagei, ein Gelbbrust-Ara. Diebe haben ihn zusammen mit zwei anderen Papageien gestohlen. Vor vier Monaten.
„Renate, mach die Glotze an“, krächzt es aus dem Karton. Vorsichtig hebt Tobias den Deckel. „Es ist tatsächlich Leo“, sagt er. „Pass auf, er hackt nach deiner Hand“, warnt Gökhan. „Wer weiß, was er erlebt hat“, meint Tobias gelassen. „Renate, noch ’n Bier“, verlangt der Papagei. Die Kinder sehen sich an und lachen.
„Das alles hat er noch nie gesagt“, meint Nadine kopfschüttelnd. „Guckt mal, da liegt ein Zettel im Karton“, ruft Sophie plötzlich. Vorsichtig greift sie in die Pappkiste. Aber Leos Schnabel trifft sie hart. „Aua, Leo“, schimpft Sophie zornig. Doch sie hat den Zettel schon in der Hand. Verwundert beginnt sie zu lesen: „Wir geben ihn zurück. Er ist eine Nervensäge.“ Tobias legt die Stirn in Falten. „Die müssen auch die anderen Papageien haben.“ Gökhan nickt. „Schon möglich, aber wie willst du herauskriegen, wo die Papageienräuber wohnen?“
„Ein Fall für unsere Spürnase“, sagt Nadine und blickt Tobias erwartungsvoll an. Tobias will nämlich zur Kriminalpolizei. Später. Jetzt ist er erst einmal Privatdetektiv. Und einige Fälle hat er schon gelöst. Er hat auch den Mann erwischt, der heimlich mit dem Luftgewehr nach Katzen geschossen hat.
„Mmm“, macht Tobias. „Die kriegen wir.“ Die anderen blicken ihn zweifelnd an. „Und wie?“, rufen sie fast wie aus einem Mund. Tobias denkt noch immer nach. Detektive lösen viele Fälle nur dadurch, dass sie nachdenken. Er weiß das aus Filmen.
„Ich hab’s“, meint er. „Du spinnst ja“, sagt Gökhan ungläubig. Aber Tobias macht ein überlegenes Gesicht. „Wir brauchen Leo nur zuzuhören. Dass er bei einer Renate war, wissen wir schon. Vielleicht verrät er auch ihren Familiennamen.“ „Total genial“, meint Gökhan bewundernd. „Aber erst mal müssen wir Leo zu Opa Lungwitz bringen.“ „Opa Lungwitz“, rufen sie durcheinander. Der kommt aus seiner Laube geschlurft. Nadine hebt triumphierend den Karton hoch.
„Leo ist wieder da!“ Opa Lungwitz strahlt plötzlich über das ganze Gesicht. So schnell er kann, kommt er angelaufen. „Mein Leo, mein lieber Leo“, ruft er immer wieder aus und hebt den Vogel auf seine rechte Schulter. „Stinklangweiliges Programm“, schimpft Leo ihm ins Ohr. Tobias kombiniert: „Er muss bei Typen gewesen sein, die viel vor der Glotze saßen.
In der Laube gibt Opa Lungwitz eine Runde Cola aus. Leo flattert durch den Raum, um sich dann auf der Lampe niederzulassen. „Helmholz, alter Esel“, krächzt er vergnügt von oben. Und er schaukelt mit der Lampe.
Tobias steht plötzlich wie erstarrt. „Das ist der Name!“, platzt er los. „Helmholz, Renate Helmholz. Diese Renate und ihr Mann müssen die Papageien geklaut haben.“ „Ja, aber die Adresse?“, meint Sophie besorgt. „Wir haben nur den Namen.“ Tobias nimmt einen Schluck von der Cola, denkt wieder nach. Dabei knirscht er mit den Zähnen. Das tut er oft, wenn er nachdenkt.“
Hoffentlich hilft dieses Zähneknirschen auch diesmal, um den Papageiendieben auf die Spur zu kommen. Aber auch die anderen vier Angebote dieses Newsletters lohnen die Lektüre. Besonders zu empfehlen ist die Weihnachtsgeschichte von Lutz Dettmann, in der sich die beiden Nachbarfamilien einen regelrechten Dekorationskrieg liefern, an dessen Ende sie … - aber wir wollen hier nicht zu viel verraten.

Getting ready for the Booklr Reads Australian challenge. These are a selection of Aussie books I own (fiction on the left, nonfic on the right) which I'll be choosing from during the month. I'm a mood reader so I have no idea what I'll actually end up picking but I'd like to get through at least a few of these.
List of titles and brief descriptions of each is below the cut for anyone looking for ideas for their own Australian reads.
The open book is The Tea Chest by Josephine Moon (my current read.)
It's a rather sweet novel revolving around four women who's lives in Australia have been disrupted and who come together to open a tea shop in London.
A true History of the Hula Hoop by Judith Lanigan
The book weaves together two parallel stories, one of Catherine, a struggling Aussie hula-hooping performance artist, and the other of Columbina, a feisty 16th century Italian female clown travelling through Europe with the first ever commedia dell'arte troupe, while also weaving in the history of the hula hoop.

A romcom inspired by/paying homage to Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, in which the protagonist loves the Kenneth Branagh adaptation and finds her love life mirroring the plot.
