One more list of "What if the Owl house character's were pokemon trainers" #3

Okay so The Owl house was the first ever cartoon I did pokemon teams for. Month's ago I made two post's on it: one for notable back ground characters, and one for our main 5. I thoght about doing one for adults... but the adult character, except for Eda and Lilith, did not get a lot of chances to be explored all the way through. I wasn't sure how to do full teams with them, and ended up did not do any for the adults. earlier this week I was board and looking back at my list for notable back ground characters; and I noticed that I hadn't included Viney. Okay she didn't get the screen time she deserved, but she is a great character and I feel she at least deserves a four pokemon team (Like I gave the Edric and Emira). All that being said I do not feel Viney and a four pokemon team are enough for a stand alone post. So I decided to add Jerbo and give him three. It still was not enough. Okay, So I will do Viney and Jerbo's smaller teams then the full teams I thought of for the Clawthorne sisters. I have also been working on smaller teams for notable (if underdeveloped) adult characters, and if I see this one still do pretty well I will post a fourth post

The Owl Lady a.k.a (Eda)lyn Clawthorne

Hoothoot: Represent's Owlbert. I mentioned it on Luz's team, saying how it's technically Eda's pokemon, Hoothoot is also close with Luz, and frequently joins Luz's team in an effort to help Eda watch over her.

Noctowl: This represents Hooty. Since it is now cannon that Post final pre epilouge Hooty moves out of the Owl house and in with Lilith I will say the sisters made a trade and Lilith gave Eda her an Omastar.

Cubone: This is to represent King. Everybody who knows both King anf pokemon knows that Dana and the crew already based King's design off of Cubone. So How could I not give Eda a Cubone? (Fun coinsidence Stanley Pines also has a Cubone on my GF list)

Gasty, Haunter, and Gangar: Okay so obviously Eda would have to have a cubone and a couple owls (Owl lady), but the obvious aside you cannot tell me that "Ghost type" would not be her favorite type. As far as ghost types go these three are and will always be the Kings. Their designs rock, all three are super powerful, they are clever. If that's not enough they're all three mischievous pranksters. If Eda were ever to have pokemon minions, those minions would be a Gastly, Haunter, and a Ganger.

Eda's team: Hoothoot, Noctowl (traded for a Omastar during Time skip), Cubone, Gastly, Haunter, Gangar.

Lilith (Lilly) Clawthorne

Phantump and Trevenant: As soon as I decided to do Lilith I decided she should have three ghosts, like Eda did. At first I was gonna give her the licklit line since its also a trilogy but well they really are not that impressive looking, especially when compared to her sisters. In the end I when with the Phantump line. They are pretty cool looking. Are scary at first, but it turns out they just want friends, Kinda like Lilith... also they have a move unique to them called "forest Curse" (The show wanted the fans to forget come season 2, but we all remembered). Trevenant requires a trade to evolve, so I gave Steve a pokemon that did too, and am just saying that her and Steve did a quick trade and trade back.

Bannette: Here's one Lilith had to have due to her... deep-seated unresolved/partially resolved family issues/sister complex. (Another fun coincidence Stanford Pines also has a bannett on my GF list)

Murrkrow: This one is to represent her palisman Mike Socks. I picked it over a more similar colored bird because Murrkrow steal something it is bad to do, but are doing so to placate a higher up Honchkrow. This can represent Lilith's relationship with Belos and how he was able to manipulate her to do bad things.

Omanyte and Omaster: Lilith is a historian who absolutely loves history so she would want fossil pokemon, and being a part of the Emperor's coven likely had access to the means to revive a pair. I picked these two, well because they look similar to barnicles which Lilith canonically likes to make into crowns and wear on her head. For real though while this pair are smaller and not as colorful or powerful looking as the big Dino fossil pokemon, I could easily see Lilith easily loving them. As mentioned above Eda eventually comes around to see the pair as pretty cool too, and the sisters make a trade: Omastar for Noctowl. (Lilith seems to like to trading in this universe)

Since it seems quite a few people don’t know, every week the VAs of Lilith and Luz alongside production associate Rebecca Rose livestream a discussion about new episodes on instagram! These streams/videos are called “Post-Hoots” and generally are 20-45 minutes long. Each week they feature new guests, AKA other people on the show: VAs, directors, artists, etc. They talk about their jobs, what goes behind the show’s production, their thoughts on the characters and story, answer questions by fans, that kind of stuff

Fun and interesting on it’s own, but we get canon info too! Some examples being

-When Odalia and Alador started dating

-The confirmation of Lilith identifying as asexual (alongside the already confirmed aromantic from twitter)

-The general ages of the dead Titans from Edge Of The World

-Eber’s canon pronouns (or lack thereof)

Then of course there are the Debatably canon tidbits we get. My personal highlights include

Jerbo’s Penstagram fame

Hunter’s polaroid photo of Belos with an inspirational quote written on it. He keeps in his pocket

Lilith’s love of bagels

Who Odalia’s favorite Blight child is (consensus wasn’t reached but everyone agreed it isn’t Edric RIP

Faust’s backstory. How he lost not only his girlfriend (Terra snapdragon), but his lips, home, and feelings of control/stability in one fell swoop. The man is literally living in the school. Wonderful.

The Post-Hoots started right before S2B came out with the first being made after the Charity Stream. Cissy and Sarah (Lilith and Luz’s VAs) talk about the contents of the stream and the upcoming season. The first “proper” Post-Hoot is about S2E11 and is when Rebecca joined the streams permanently. Currently they are up to S2E19 and they haven’t announced when the stream for S2E20 will be, but they are generally late in the week.

If you only want character bits and care less for the other discussions they have, I think the S2E13 Post-Hoot is a good place to start! There are audio issues in the beginning though. The guests are head writer John Bailey Owen, voice director+VA of boscha Eden Riegal, and the voice of hunter Zeno Robinson. In this one it’s (debatably) confirmed by Zeno that Belos has a penstagram account and really? The fandom should be acknowledging that. Why theorize about The Day of Unity when we can theorize about Belos’ online posting habits?

All Post-Hoots are live-streamed and later uploaded to Cissy’s Instagram. Link here for the very first one. Unfortunately there are no subtitles and it can be hard to hear them at times

General TOH Headcanons

Grimwalkers don’t really feel heat (unless it’s something extremely hot).

⬆️ Grimwalkers aren’t affecting by the boiling sea or boiling rain.

⬆️ Atalanta didn’t know that this was just a grimwalker thing and just thought people were exaggerating.

Also, if a Grimwalker has an incomplete galderstone, it results in either no magical abilities (aside from glyphs) or unusual magic abilities.

Grimwalkers also have an affinity for beast keeping or plant magic

Lystra is still alive, she used a curse similar to the palisman curse to stay alive (much like Philip/Belos had).

Lilith actually doesn’t remember much from her time in the emperor’s coven (similar to Hunter, Steve (partiality), and Atalanta in the golden duo au). This is due to their brain blocking everything out.

Raine and Steve are clumsy

Atalanta and Boscha have a complicated relationship (a mix of platonic and romantic), though neither of them chooses to label it.

⬆️ They, along with Luz and Amity, get teased for it so much.

Othala and Boscha are cousins.

Solis and Lunna are from Latissa, though they moved to Bonesborough recently.

Atalanta only started wearing a face mask after the day of unity.

Nixie and Nithe were the only ones that knew Vee was a basilisk (aside from Camila). However, the two did not know that Camilia already knew about Vee, this results in the two teenagers going to stupid lengths to try and hide it.

All the teenagers have learned how to parkour (skill varies between who with Edric being the most clumsy and Hunter having the most skill (having done it for years), though Willow, Boscha, Luz, and Atalanta are very close behind).

⬆️ They all just race each other.

⬆️ Adrian and August will join in these races to compare skills

Lilith tries her best to restore old history books/books around wild magic.

Luz memorizes animal symbolism and annoys everyone with it.

Vee has the mouth of a sailor.

Boscha joins the beast keeping track after the day of unity.

Luz, Amity, Gus, Willow, Hunter, Atalanta, Vee, Boscha, Mattolomule, Amelie, Skara, Celine, Barcus, Jerbo, and Viney (along with Edric and Emira on some occasions) make up the ‘Hexside Squad’.

⬆️ Skara and Viney become a part of the squad much later than everyone else

⬆️ They also get into so many shenanigans.

⬆️ No one allows each other to make self deprecating jokes about themselves, they will get a bunch of reassurance/logical arguments.

Lilith is really good at gardening

Skara’s violin playing sounds similar to Lindsey Stirling

⬆️ They’ve also tried to get everyone in the group to at least play one instrument in order to start a band.

Viney is a great dancer.

Also, the town of Gravesfield just kinda vibes with the witches (some shops even take snails as well as dollars).

Raine and Eda stargaze with each other on the roof of the owl house and Hooty interrupts it routinely.

Gus has attempted to start a pod cast about humans.

Adrian and Darius know how to the ‘customer service’ voice.

When they’re stressed, both August and Adrian embroider little patterns.

⬆️ This has rubbed off onto Atalanta, who embroiders their Hexside uniform.

Vitimir and Adrian are actually really good friends.

Cedric was a wild witch and helped teach Atalanta magic.

⬆️ He, along with Eda, helps teach stuff that was considered ‘wild magic’.

Some of the former coven heads (Darius, Eber, Raine, Adrian, Vitimir) volunteer at the school to help the kids.

⬆️ Osran was apart of this at one point, but he started to have issues with the kids (aka, he started to beef with the kids and went absolutely not excellent).

Celine and Barcus are great friends and often tutor each other.

Hexside Squad has a thing called ‘Honesty Hour’ where you can’t lie unless you need to (used to confess emotions).

Adrian and Atalanta can pretty much run on spite (they get it from each other)

Jerbo and Viney jokingly accuse each other of betrayal

An unnecessary and in-depth analysis of magic colors used in TOH (Part 2):

Part 1 here

Purple:

Darius

Purple is associated with luxury, ambition, independence, mystery, arrogance, and inferiority

Darius is pretty much the embodiment of the color purple based on symbolism. He’s independent, he’s mysterious, he’s arrogant, he likes to live in luxury. He doesn’t act super ambitious but he is a Coven Head so we can assume he is somewhat. And the fact that he’s so competitive with Alador suggests that he may experience feelings of inferiority.

Magenta:

Amity, Alador, Tibbles, Gavin (possibly Kikimora and Malphas)

Magenta is associated with kindness, character, change, harmony, cooperation, and self respect but also impatience, arrogance and volatility.

Note: Kikimora and Malphas are listed as having purple magic on the wiki page, but it looks more magenta to me and I think that magenta makes more sense for them as well.

Impatience, arrogance and volatility are traits that are shared among these characters for the most part, though with Amity they’re mostly presented early in the show. The positive traits, consequently, have a lot of significance for Amity, who has gone through tremendous development and change over the course of the show. She’s become kinder and has learned to respect herself in a way that her parents couldn’t. She’s invited harmony into her life. If the show wasn’t cut short, I think we would have had a similar (smaller-scale) development for Alador and maybe even the other antagonists; at the very least Alador has taken initiative to change and better himself.

White:

Emperors Coven Scouts, Adegast, Detention Monitor, Oracle Teacher

White is associated with purity, innocence, perfection, safety, simplicity, illumination, emptiness, and unfriendliness

This one is interesting. For the Emperor’s Coven, since they are working for Belos, I can see their magic being sort of “sanitized”, void of their own creativity or free will. Similarly, for the teachers, maybe their magic is somewhat restricted when they’re on school grounds. They have to stick to the rules and regulations. For Adegast, maybe the white represents how his true nature/form was “illuminated” in WBW. Note: Jerbo is also listed using white on the wiki page but it actually looks like more of a white green to me, which makes more sense for him.

Yellow:

Eda, Mattholomule, Luz, Raine, Hunter (flapjack)

Yellow is associated with sunlight, positivity, intellect, creativity, and confidence. Some shades of yellow are also linked to magic and diversity. On the other hand, yellow can be a symbol of deceit, depression, or cowardice.

This one is fascinating to me. Yellow being associated with Luz makes perfect sense, her name literally means light and there’s so much symbolism in the show associating her with light. It also fits well for Eda, who is sort of the personification of magic and diversity, as well as sharing other traits with Luz. Eda and Raine are the only couple to share the same magic color and I think that was very much intentional, they are each other’s light. Hunter switching from red magic to yellow with flapjack must have significance as well. He goes from having every aspect of his life controlled by Belos, to finding a sense of autonomy and confidence in himself. Deceit, depression and cowardice are also all themes that recur for these characters throughout the show.

Now for the odd one out: Mattholomule. This is one of the things that got me interested in the colors in the first place. Matt having the same magic color as Luz, Eda and Hunter? Maybe he will have plot relevance in the next episode? Okay, most likely not. But a girl can dream. He’s definitely shown cowardice and deceit before. And he has a loud (overly-confident) personality. Maybe we will get some other hints of how the color fits him in WAD. Also curiously, Matt is one of the characters shown to use a different magic color at some point (more on that below)

Cyan:

Gus, Lilith, Edric, Emira, Adrian Graye, Titan Trappers, Keeper, Reviewnicorn

Cyan is associated with compassion, clarity, calmness, concentration, and communication. It can also signify narcissism, stress, secrecy, boastfulness. It’s also the opposite of red.

Many of the characters using this color are illusionists. At face value, concentration, clarity and communication are all important traits for illusionists to have. But I think for the twins, the color might also represent their connection and ability to see and understand each other. Likewise, Lilith’s color may be a symbol of her bond with Eda; her character development and how she grew to accept and understand her sister.

Adrian is a talented illusionist but his narcissism blinds him when it comes to really seeing and understanding others. The Reviewnicorn I could also see being somewhat boastful or narcissistic. And the Keeper, in addition to being compassionate and a skilled illusionist is definitely keeping some secrets. What about the Titan Trappers though? Is the blue a symbol of their secrecy? What do you guys think?

Finally, Gus. He really is the embodiment of this color as much as Darius is purple. He’s compassionate and understanding. He’s intuitive and able to see a lot of things that others might miss, even without magic. He’s able to get through to people and to see the good in them when others can’t. At the same time he can also be somewhat boastful and narcissistic himself at times. And we see how much he struggles with pressure and secrecy in particular.

Back to Matt for a minute, he’s seen in this image from the FTF credits using what looks to be cyan magic. Maybe it’s an accident or supposed to represent the use of illusion magic, but I like to think that perhaps it represents a connection to Gus. If you guys know of any other examples of characters switching colors, let me know!

Writers’ Post-Hoot!

As the title suggests, we just had a Post-Hoot with multiple writers from the show! Those present included John Bailey Owen, Cissy Jones (Lilith), Sarah Nicole-Robles (Luz), Rebecca Bozza (ItsRebeccaRose), Mikki Crisostomo, Madeleine Hernandez, Zarch Marcus, Avi Roque (Raine), with Zelda Black as our cameraman! I took notes, including on some cancelled storylines involving characters such as Vee, Odalia, Edric, Eda, and Hooty!

Firstly, Zach Marcus has been writing on the show since the developmental pilot. It was confirmed Barcus was not based on him (unlike Jerbo for JBO), but he did say Barcus was ‘his’ character. I believe it was confirmed that Kikimora’s alias Miki was a reference to writer Mikki Crisostomo, and we also learned that The First Day had to be rewritten within a day! Mikki revealed she got hired for the show because she wrote a violent sample script in which someone had their rib cage kicked out, which convinced Dana she had to be on TOH!

The development pilot is very different from the show according to Zach; It had the classic blood smear moment (in which Luz draws herself and Amity together, gets a paper cut, and uses her blood to simulate a blush as improv), and alas will never be released. JBO also said there are three poems in the show that the fandom hasn’t found yet…?!

Dana was watching and commented a few times, such as when Avi, Cissy, and Sarah were doing the classic “Then why were you so easy to curse?!” line, commenting “Legendary Cissy line”.

In regards to cut Season 3 storylines, Zach mentioned that there are so many versions of Thanks to Them that they went through (Dana gave a comment giving approval for them to speak on concepts). He revealed there was a version where the kids would’ve piloted Abomaton mechs in the desert…?!

(I wonder if this is related to Kikimora, who pilots an Abomaton herself and comes from the desert of Palm Stings. Would Amity have helped in the creation?)

Mikki also revealed Hooty was a Big Bad at one point in the writing process?! He’d have had as many legs as rib bones, poking through, as well as smoke.

Huntlow was acknowledged as a major goal by Mikki and Madeleine (who kept asking why can’t they be happy???), and Zach joked that Huntlow wasn’t canon but c’mon. We can thank Mikki for writing the haircut that Willow gave Hunter!!!

Dana was glad to keep the Star Trek reference, since so many crew members are Trekkies. Emmy also alluded to a ‘bog setting’ where the kids fought ‘bog bodies’… Unfortunately, her internet connection wasn’t so great so she cut out a bit and I couldn’t make out everything. But does this mean Belos would’ve reanimated corpses in the graveyard for the kids to fight?! Or the Grimwalkers?!

JBO liked doing Luz in the human realm, as it was a different vibe than usual; More melancholy but also creepy. He wanted to explore the idea of what if a kid DID go to Narnia, and how that would affect them afterwards, and he’s happy with how it turned out… Same JBO, same.

Emmy revealed there was also going to be a storyline where Vee was uncomfortable with having Hunter in the house!!!

Sarah mentioned a question in the chat about the other coven heads, which could’ve been my question actually… JBO says that there was a lot they wanted to do with them, he really likes Hettie in particular. He considered exploring what Darius did to achieve his Abomination transform, speculating it’d probably take a dark sacrifice to do that. In general they wanted to see the coven heads plot with and try to kill each other; Lots of intercoven drama according to Zach.

Zach also praised those who designed the coven heads; He lamented how designers often visualize concepts submitted by writers as so much cooler than the writers think they can do justice when writing, once they receive them back.

Zach Marcus was described as the pun man of the writers, and when asked about what Darius’ Penstagram, they all agreed upon Goo Daddy. He was torn between Darius being a luddite, or nonstop posting what he eats, with a reflection of him in something. The writers discussed stuff like a Darius skincare routine, and him getting up every morning like a Disney Princess with animals, except they’re Abominations (fanartists were encouraged to depict this).

JBO said he would’ve liked to see more of young Terra, Zach wanted to see more of her and Faust! As a reminder, a previous Post-Hoot had him put forth the idea that they were exes until they messily broke up and Terra tore off Faust’s lips and kicked him out, hence him living at Hexside and being so strict as a means of regaining a sense of control in his life.

Zach also joked about everyone dying in the original Season 3 plans, but they allegedly changed it to a happy ending because the pandemic meant people needed something uplifting! They were barely in the exploration for S3 when they received news of the shortening.

They joked about Barcus episodes, and also made a point about limitations actually being pretty good for writing, as it encourages writers to cut out the fat and leave the most essential bits. They said it was fun seeing Dana write on spite, and she thinks about a lot of the stuff they do for the story as the mastermind.

Zach revealed him and Dana disagree on Mattholomule’s name, with Zach insisting it’s Mattholomule; His only compromise is saying his last name is also Tholomule… So Mattholomule Tholomule canon??? Zach also wanted a character named Corvus.

Eda was a ‘horn dog’ in OG scripts for TOH, breaking hearts and all that. There was an episode with a B-plot in which Eda went on a date with playboy merchant, just so she could get a deal on crow heads, but Disney didn’t want a ‘horny old lady’. Dana commented that it was jut Eda on a date, but Disney was being weird about it.

The writers also mentioned that they considered ‘Mom Tholomule’ and ‘Dad Tholomule’ in what they called the racing episode (I presume Eda’s Requiem’s B-plot), and they planned Steve and Mattholomule being brothers from S1! Zach joked that if the Tholomule parents showed up, they’d have taken attention from everything, with fans losing interest for Lumity, Raeda, and Huntlow in favor of them.

They brought up their weirdest failed episodes, such as a race (which might be what they meant regarding the Tholomule parents) as well as an episode where Eda and Odalia had beef. It’d have been based on the Rats! musical poster –the one that gave Raine stage fright- and would’ve had musical elements, but alas Dana doesn’t like musicals herself due to her own experiences with them (which might be the Doylist source for Raine’s own trauma as well now that I think of it).

Odalia would’ve been one of those obsessive parents, entering an Abomination disguised as a child for the role. Edric would’ve been angry and formed a rivalry with this fake child, wanting to be Momma’s Boy, and it’d end with the fake child getting decapitated and their head sliding off as the big reveal.

When asked about doing ‘Blaine’ (Belos-possessed Raine), Avi explained they didn’t need to watch Rhys to copy Belos’ inflections, having watched the show plenty. They were surprised about the Blaine development when they went in to voice Raine that day and were told about it!

When asked about favorite characters to write, Zach said he loved Eda because he didn’t need to go into anyone’s headspace when writing her, it was basically just him talking. Madeleine brought up how Matthew Rhys would charm the entire zoom call with his recording, and Emmy mentioned how twice she wrote for a bloodcurdling scream only for a VA to give more of an Ahhhhh.

Specifically, Edric would’ve had a more bloodcurdling scream when he broke through his body cast to hug Amity (Zach wrote that, Emmy did the art for it), with everyone agreeing he should be in pain. A ‘piercing scream’ was specified, though Sarah joked about how hard VAs worked, and said a bloodcurdling scream might be done for an Oscar nomination (doing such a scream is taxing due to multiple takes).

Mikki loves writing Lilith, calling her a big dweeb; Madeline loves Hooty the most, as he’s a wild card and she loves writing those. One example she brought up was in Hollow Mind, when Hooty shut down the Owl House. Madeleine loves it when Hooty goes from zero to sixty in either direction, fully insane.

JBO also liked Hooty best, as well as King! They referenced the B-plot from Adventures in the Elements, in which Hooty negotiates a drawn body for himself from King, which Emmy and JBO wrote. The actual sketch used in the episode was straight-up one of their drawings, I didn’t catch whose though. Hooty’s dialogue in Eda’s conversation with him (from Something Ventured, Someone Framed) was also written by JBO, with Emmy drawing the bit where his tongue reaches for a fly!

In regards to writing advice, JBO said to just do stuff, it’s better than nothing; Emmy concurred, it’s still worth it to write it, even if nobody pays you for it. Zach added that for writers, one of their goals is to be more of a tool; Get what they’ve made into the hands of someone who can take it further, it’s collaborative storytelling and writers need to see it from that perspective. Likewise, they mentioned having people read what you’ve written, as they can notice stuff that’s missing that you hadn’t thought of/remembered. Zach hoped for a TOH art book, as he liked a lot of Emmy Cicierga’s visual jokes and hoped people could enjoy them! IIRC Emmy did that one meme of Ariel combining her fish tail with two legs as a solution, so that tracks.

On a final note, there was a HUGE wave of people commenting about Gustholomule throughout the entire stream. It went unacknowledged alas, but the group also mentioned they couldn’t answer spoiler questions so...
